The package contains the most meaningful gun restrictions in decades. CBS News congressional correspondent Scott mcfarlane tells us what provisions are in it. There really are three that stand out in this 80 page text of Bill. One of which expands background checks for gun buyers under the age of 21. One would help states pass red flag laws through which courts can order gun seized from people deemed dangerous. We have those laws throughout our area, Maryland, Virginia, D.C., all have them, but only 19 states total do. And it would close what they call the boyfriend loophole, preventing gun possession for some people who've been convicted of domestic violence. A final vote on the legislation could happen as soon as this week. The family of a black man shot and killed during a traffic stop by a white police officer, says they've reached a settlement with a suburban Minneapolis city. Brooklyn center has agreed to pay 3.25 million to the family of daunte Wright, but the family's attorneys say it won't be finalized until an arrangement has reached on changing the way police officers are trained and funding for a permanent memorial for right. He was killed while resisting police during a traffic stop. Then officer Kimberly Potter shot him, saying she mistook her handgun for a taser. "Let's look at another case that shows a different facet of the problem Philip, in Brooklyn center, Minnesota, police stopped Dante Wright for having expired, car registration tags. Now, many listeners will be familiar with the story since the police officer involved was recently found guilty of manslaughter, but tell us what happened when the police pulled Dante over. So the senior officer who was also a training officer is trying to restrain Dante writers down to writers trying to get away. And that senior officer then calls out taser taser taser. That's what you're supposed to do when you grab the taser, let everybody know there's an energy controlled weapon, let them get clear. She does not, in fact, grab the taser. She grabs her firearm, shoots and kills Dante Wright. So I feel in the aftermath of these incidents, there are often multiple claims and counterclaims, Dante Wright's mother said he called her during the incident and said he'd been pulled over because he had air fresheners hanging from his rearview mirror. Now, that sounds like a trivial infraction, and many people concluded, it showed the police had malicious intent. But I want to play you a clip from Brooklyn center police chief Tim gannon at a news conference shortly after the shooting. It is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their taser, but instead shot mister Wright with a single bullet. This appears to me from what I viewed in the officer's reaction in distress immediately after that this was an accidental discharge. That resulted in a tragic death of mister Wright. So the family saying, look, who pulls over someone for hanging air fresheners in their car, its racist cops, of course, the police say, no, no, no, the cop was distressed after the shooting. This proves she could not have been racist, and almost instantly, we start arguing about what's happening inside the police officer's mind. That's exactly it. And I think one of the ways that it's important to understand the way that we do race in the United States, we've got scripts, if I tell you a story, and there is an attractive woman walking her dog, the dog pulls on the leash and she falls down and then a very attractive gentleman who probably has a British accent, goes to help her up and she's embarrassed. Where are we? We're clearly in the middle of a romantic comedy, and that was a meet cute. But we don't just have genres for movies. We have genres for the stories that play out in our society. And the story, the tragic awful killing of Dante Wright and the killing of tamir rice and the killing of Adam Toledo, we quickly put that inside of genres, where the relative question is, how sinister is the officer? How deserving of death was the victim. And those are terrible genres to help us write the narratives that get us out of here, which is why the definition of racism is so much part of the.

Well we've been asked to take on the case and we're willing to do it because we're public servants and win. The public needs service. Proposed change comes a month after a white police officer killed a black man named Dante right during a traffic stop Matt Sepik of Minnesota public radio reports on April 11th officer Kim Potter pulled over Dante Ride in Brooklyn Center, a diverse community of 30,000 bordering Minneapolis. Police say it was because of expired plates writes. Mother says it was a dangling air freshener. As Potter and another officer tried to arrest the 20 year old on an outstanding firearms warrant. He broke free and got back in his car. On body camera video. Potter is heard shouting Taser, but instead she grabs her nine millimeter gun. The gun shot is edited out of this clip. Potter, who was a police officer for 26 years, resigned and is charged with manslaughter. That killing led to a week of demonstrations, including violent clashes with law enforcement. Some demonstrators and police exchanged bricks and fireworks for rubber bullets and tear gassed. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. The demonstrators and police did not exchange bricks and fireworks. Demonstrators threw bricks and fireworks at police right, And they responded with rubber bullets and tear gas in kind. That sentence is just phrased in such a way that you know you could reasonably believe that they're referring bricks at each other like it was the fun time. Yeah, there were some demonstrators just tossing bricks at each other and threatened lighting fireworks off in the Air America's new favorite game cops and demonstrators. It's like chutes and ladders, but different. Yeah, it's just you're right. It's like that. Just here you go here is that you know, you know, Brick in a firework being a brick being thrown at you in a firework being shot at you can kill you. Can be lethal can be at least be incredibly dangerous rubber bullets and tear gas. Not so much In response. The Brooklyn Center city clown so quickly banned chemical weapons, and Mayor Mike Elliott publicly criticized their use. However, in a letter to the Hennepin County sheriff who assumed the role of incident commander after the Brooklyn Center Police chief resigned under pressure, Elliot requested the continued support of law enforcement agencies that do used tear gas. So point your ire at At the hypocrite If that's what you don't like, point your ire at Mayor Mike Elliot if he still is endorsing the use of this, even though he publicly said that they shouldn't be doing it to try anyway, trying to have it every way, you know, they don't even try to have it both ways. They're trying to have it every way, you know, and it frankly pisses me off. They hear these political leaders go out there and wag their finger at police officers and police organizations who used tear gas and rubber bullets and nonlethal means. But don't have a word to say about people chucking bricks at their heads. What are they supposed to do? Our police officers not allowed to defend themselves against people chucking bricks at their heads. And what is an and again and and the truth of the matter is the protesters. The writers they know there's more than likely going to be a response. At least that's my assumption, because what do you think is supposed to happen? You're just the most to be able to go and cause whatever damage you feel like causing without any repercussions whatsoever is drew vigorously shakes his head up and down. That's what they want.
