All That Is Wicked
"This is dryden village in upstate. New york near ithaca. The first settler arrived here in seventeen ninety seven and it was eventually named after english poet. John dryden the small country village. They founded was quirky. Six mile creek was actually twenty miles long but the people who lived there were proud of their heritage. After the revolutionary war. The town became part of the military tract program. It was a government scheme that gifted each new york soldier hundreds of acres of land a type of payment for participating in the war the war of eighteen twelve drafted even more soldiers so more veterans came and some of its most notable early villagers were the scots. They were respected family. That was really well known for their contributions to the village but they were also known for the string of horrific murders in their family. Red light you can imagine this now lost snow on bravo. I'm a journalism professor at the university of texas and austin and now i've never really driven in the snow. It took me about an hour just to drive thirteen miles. From ithaca craig scott and i drive the back roads of dryden winding pass churches and fields to brookefield farm. This has been in his family for almost two hundred years. Another scutt kathy. Chadwick lives here with her son and her dog. Hannah ohana i wander around for awhile outside. Craig is a retired local businessman and politician who has lived off of scutt road for decades. The local cemeteries are filled with his ancestors. The scutt name rings royalty in dryden at least to me. He and cathy have hundreds of relatives in the county but they've never actually met most of them. What is it like to come from such a large family. I have two cousins vast family. We always run into people that we didn't know we were were part of a tree somewhere. I at least. I find that i went to the picnic a couple of years ago. And oh my word. Where did all this cuts come from. So it was a little surprising to me that the family was so extensive. The scots arrived in america. In the early sixteen hundreds from amsterdam they owned lumber mills clothing mills and thousands of acres of farmland. They felt blessed to be a part of such a close community. Gerald smith is a historian and nearby broome county and an expert on small town life in the eighteen hundreds. Everybody knows everybody else. Everybody would go over and help the neighboring farmer or two or three farms down. If there was a problem the barn burned down. There's a barn. Raising the family's patriarch in eighteen. Forty two was john scott. He was a fifty five year old decorated veteran in the war of eighteen twelve. John own this house which looks really small from the outside. But it's two stories with four bedrooms and a large basement a pretty impressive eighteen forties house that has stayed in the scott family for generations. A well with original slate stone sits just feet from the house. A murder of crows lives in a massive willow tree nearby. I can remember as a child coming out here to visit. It's not a bad thing to hang on a little bit to the past john. Scott was cathy chadwick's great great. Great grandfather he became a well known schoolteacher in dryden a leader in the village he was highly intellectual and very hard working and a little strict told me about the family. Valley's well perseverance stubborn. It's right up there on top of the list. My grandfather used to say man's only as good as his word could give somebody your word. Make sure you keep it. He always was stressing that yeah and that was something that i did as well and commitment to each other. Henry scott was john and hannah's second eldest child henry was trusting. His mother and father had raised their five girls and seven boys to always welcome the wandering men who stumbled onto their farm.

"We see this happening with greenvale and south ridge. You kind of a revamping a reimagining of what a mall can be. Be or what the purposes that serves for its residents. We see residential creeping in that's part of this proposal. But the risk here is for communities. This isn't a new development. There's an existing development when we created Drexel townsquare creek. It was brand new. We didn't have anything was an old industrial cert-. Right. This is something that's already existing. So when you recreate with city dollars and hoping that this turns out, well, and we've seen this with greenvale been pretty successful so far Brookefield as well. The some of their developments. This is a risk for the city can your development pay off. So that you're putting money into that taxation district tip district to actually make this work. It's a risk. I don't know that they have a choice. They have to make that work. It's one of the drivers of that area. Bayshore still has a lot of potential a lot of interest from consumers retail restaurant, all the other things there. It's a good story. We'll see if it works for them. But it is a risk thoughts them this evening. Coming in at nine. We're gonna talk about is first half hour. What what she thinks? She's she's all about real estate commercial real estate. We'll we'll dip into that. One. Big news at the White House. The biggest news possible yesterday. It is my privilege to award our nation's highest civilian honor to one of the greatest athletes in the history of sports. Tiger woods. That's right. Big praise for tiger. Tiger. Congratulations on receiving the presidential medal of freedom. Craig Benson medal of freedom has been awarded to tiger. Void interesting. Nugget about the president and handing out those metals of freedom before his administration for four to five percent of the awardees were sports figures want to guess what the numbers for the president percentage. Wise hundred fifty percent. Okay. So succumbing interesting tweet. No, it shows the kind of guy the president is he loves sports loves golf in particular. Tiger have been they've played golf together. Don't they? Well, they're also business partners tiger. That's the controversy. Of this tiger design, one of his Trump courses. So there's that element as well. I heard a report I think it was CNN yesterday questioning whether or not it was appropriate for a president to hand off one of these medals of freedom, which are still pretty rare pretty high award to somebody who you're in a business arrangement with define appropriate. Like is anyone gonna lose sleep over now? And the end of the day. It doesn't matter because the president ultimately decide there doesn't have to be a committee that the size. No, some presidents have done that. They've asked their chief of staff investor administration. Collectively who deserves this this president this as far as we know didn't do that. I cannot wait to see Mercure today. Ask them all about this. Hey, did you. I'm surprised he hasn't running. He's not here yet. But plus he's not on the hotline calling right now. How dare he do that? There's a new show infiltrate getting van wagon on my side. We'll get a bunch of Tiger Woods. Don't get all worked up about it. It's Tiger Woods. The story was incredible. I spent a couple of times to my show talking about whether that rise. To level medal of freedom. He does a lot of great things for charity. Maybe that's part of the qualifier here. But the president loves Tiger Woods and we saw that with the award yesterday. The other story you can put to bed the Kentucky Derby and the controversy there. The officials at the Kentucky Derby have rejected an appeal by the owner of the horse maximum security, which was disqualified after finishing first in the race. You may recall yesterday around this time, the owner of that horse made news by saying, I we're not going to run in the Preakness and second we are going to appeal the finish of that race and the decision they make now if you ask most or some horse racing experts. They will say the decision to disqualify was the right 'cause definitely.
From Android Q to new Pixels: Our Google I/O preview (The 3:59, Ep. 556)
"The. Fifty nine Roger Chan, I'm Ben FOX Rueben Google kicks off in less than two hours. We're expecting some big updates to Android Google system. And maybe even that creepy. Duplex assistant can I last year I came? And then of course, there are the rumors of more forcible pixel three. What are you most looking forward to? I think the pixel sounds really interesting. I think that's also been like very heavily leaked. So we are definitely expecting that. I would love to see what the price point is on that. Like, let's say it's something like five hundred dollars or something like that. That would be pretty notable that would be kind of cool. Yeah. Sort of goes back to Google's routes as the maker or the partner of for nexus phones. Right. Those were known for being affordable premium flagship phones, they kind of got away with that largely focused on premium phones are far more expensive closer line with the tan or Samsung phones, they clearly felt a lot pressures. So I'm also looking for those three so three the. The other element that I think is interesting is the the Android Q is expected to show off support for foldable phones. Yes. That would have been great. But I feel like after what happened with the Samsung galaxy fold the probably gonna underplay that element. I I don't really see them leading into ill. Jeff will be one of many elements. I think they'll talk about with Andrew accu-. Do you have a guess for way in Q stands for? Quaker oatmeal cookies. Okay. Sure. That was a terrible terrible. Sorry as say quiche each. Yeah. Issues in a snack. Think they're sweet quiches right snacky shore. I don't know. All right. So Amazon goes sores are started the freight. I'll be at very very slowly we finally got one of New York. Check it out what tell me about. Why should we care about this Zongo store? Okay. So this one just opened today at Brookefield place. It's an upscale mall near the World Trade Center, the big difference here because this is the twelfth Amazon go store, so what's actually different here is that this is the first Amazon go store to accept cash so Amazon go was literally created to get rid of cash. Cashiers lines all that other stuff? So you could literally walk in and walk out in a couple of seconds. There's been a lot of blowback to the concept of going cashless because it's really considered to be exclusionary to certain people that either don't have a credit card or don't have a phone. So this is Amazon's effort to respond to that. So what was it like being in that store? Toward like was there. Someone who took the Catholic. How did that work? So they walked me through a demo because they knew people were going to ask about this since this is the first store that did this. And essentially what you do is you get to agreed are and greeter lets you in and then you walk around get everything that you need to get. And then you go to a little counter and somebody will. Basically scan in all your stuff and give you a paper recede in. It's not exactly as tacky as you. Go stores, just like any other store. Yes. Yes. But you don't have to have special app, and you can just pay with cash if you went to so from from that regard. Yeah. That's that's it is now more inclusive. Does feel like it defeats the whole purpose of that Amazon. Go store, though, doesn't it? Yes. Okay. No kidding sloughs clear about that. Lastly, let's talk about five G. There's an earth survey out the US consumers are willing to pay a premium for next generation so will service the warriors see with charted ten dollars extra for their five g service at like, ten dollars extra per phone her month charging. Yeah. Per phone per month. Yeah. So if you're on a family plan with five phones, your chart your spirit of no-one's oughta family plan with five G right now. Critical. I'll say this right now. I don't think the premiums award to even people are willing to pay more. They should coverage. Not there yet. I think both that works are actually built out actually worth it. But for now, it's yeah. Novelty. I have a controversial statement to make here, which is shouldn't have to pay a premium at all is in this just like the next iteration just make it faster and keep charging us these exorbitant fees that you've been charged per year. Like, why do I have to pay even more your point? I don't think they charge a premium for G jail T. Yeah. So there you go. All right for more than six. I'll see that. Roger Chan I'm Ben FOX. Thanks listening.
Brookfield to buy most of Oaktree to build juggernaut to rival Blackstone
"Brookefield agreeing to buy a majority stake in Howard Marx's oak tree again to very well. No names Gillian tan senior reporter for Bloomberg. She has been all over this knows this space better than anyone. So Jillian as you guys have unpacked this deal. What really jumps out to you. I was lucky enough to speak to Howard marks. And Bruce flat this morning, the CEOs of fulfilled and oaktree one key point that jumped out was that the driver behind this transaction is an ability to serve clients. So if you think of L pays for those who want familiar sovereign wealth funds, pension funds endowments, they're looking to park money, billions of dollars massive checks with fuel manages. So if you step back and think what does that mean people looking to put five ten maybe fifteen twenty billion with fuel manages, folks. Like Brookefield sat back they realized they didn't have the capability until now to be able to meet some of the mandates. Bruce, flat told us we have difficulty meeting the street terms of some of these mandates and very few firms in the world would be able to do that. And the combination should be quite powerful. If you think broadly, really only black started, or maybe even black rook, maybe those would be among the groups able to provide an all service one stop shop. This combination is really sort of changed the game. Yeah. I mean, it is amazing. I'm so glad you brought up those other names because up until this point you we've been in this mode where and you've written a lot about this Blackstone has essentially been putting a lot as fates between itself. And everyone else Brookefield has always been there for them as a real estate competitor. But now this really is you say changes the game. Yeah. Absolutely. So Brookfield recognized that it didn't have a distrust credit capability trade. That's been it's bread and butter for years. And interestingly enough, we go to hold from memory that how it sent to invest is saying that they would only ever do a deal with someone where they were able to maintain autonomy and that such a deal they thought to be quite hard to find he wrote that in two thousand and two seventeen years later, he's found a by that fits so tell us more about if you can't talking to them and sort of the vibe that you got from these two guys because again, these are two very powerful personalities. In a powerful personalities. I should Bruce latte. Not the most powerful personality. He's so understated in a lot of ways did you glean from that conversation? Yes. I gleaned one interesting thing that Brookville Mattia perch up Taiba, we're trying to get a little bit more information about how it actually came together. The other thing that they both reiterated is that there is very little overlap in their businesses. They don't expect to be competing on deals. They think it's purely complementary. I think that was one word that they reiterated again, and again, so I guess they're they're broad cell is that they don't expect to be cross selling too much between investors that they already have because they already have relationships with so many of the biggest investors, but it's more being able to provide a one stop shop solution to these groups. The other interesting thing rewrite today about these regional men and another Bruce Bruce cash is that all three of billionaires. And now they're all end up one central roof. So I'm curious how Thomas has Howard marks Romy. So interestingly super tournaments, they're running all the businesses. As is nothing's changing. No, branding, all the funds all the fund heads. Everyone. Just stays as is. It's just a case of a big client who comes in. And we say, well, we can offer you this real estate Brookfield and whatever else we can offer you distress debt. Right. And that's the whole idea. Exactly. So one example how it provided? He now co this morning. He said an LP will hire an investment manager and say, we're interested in these eleven strategies, he's X billion please put the money to work, and it helps to have a broad menu. So how'd previously didn't have big real estate big infrastructure? Right. So do they have to do? They have to add anything else is there. Another acquisition may be coming. The acid offering for these two. I think not I think they're all set. One other thing we we pushed out another story recently this afternoon that just shows that more deals may occur in the industry as sort of Brookfield at our trees now much smaller rivals KKR, Kyle upholster Aries. Maybe thing we need to do something bright because all those stocks moved up in the aftermath of this. It's so fascinating. This story is far from over and really, Jillian as you very rightly point out in his you point out in several stories mentioned on the terminal all among the most read is a game changer in the alternative asset business, really in the broader investment businesses. Well, Brookefield and oak tree getting together. Always get to catch up with you here where we're seeing steals happening where everybody else kind of wakes up all of a sudden, whether it's the financial industry or other industries, we're seeing a lot of

"So gym today elite fitness in Brookefield for those keeping score at home. And right before I hopped in the shower, I noticed there was a college basketball game on and I thought to myself. Okay. Here we go the twenty four hour. College basketball marathon is on did. I miss this. What what happened? How did I not know about this or hear about this earlier the kind of event that I'm always up on and paying attention to? But now that I have two kids under the age of four well, you pay attention to different things. So I guess more often than not during the day. Well. So I went a little did a little research and know the game that I was watching earlier today, even though it was live and being played about eleven o'clock AM. It was not a part of ESPN's twenty four hours of college hoops marathon. In fact, there is no more ESPN twenty four hour of college hoops marathon. So for all you three AM basketball enthusiasts. Well, you have to find a different sport to watch at that time. I don't know why ESPN stopped doing this. But it was a decade long tradition. They actually announced it back in two thousand seventeen what stop. Stop airing this rather customary twenty four hour marathon that was sort of an unofficial kickoff to the college basketball season. Now, the reasoning for the cancellation I did a little digging on it from ESPN's perspective. It does make some sense here logistically, it's pretty challenging the pull off a full twenty four consecutive hours of basketball broadcasts, you'd have a game starting in Hawaii. And all of a sudden, you'd have an east coast game starts out in New York or Boston area, or whatever. There are some programming challenges to be sure, but it was one of those sort of signature of vents, and this would be a good topic for a longer show. But is there a sporting event out there that grew up watching or you're really loved and all of a sudden, it was just poof gone. There's a few that come to mind for me. And this is certainly one of them the skins game is another one of them. I love watching that around thanksgiving weekend. It was golf on TV. It always looks like a warm weather plays were usually in the desert or maybe out in Hawaii. You'd have for the best golfers in the world. It was candidate. They were miked up. It was the skins game. So between football and meals thrown a little bit of golf, and it was fun. It was engaging. It was different than a normal tournament. I miss stuff like that. Absolutely. So the twenty four hour college basketball marathon, a little gimmicky. Yes. But certainly a lot of fun, and it was sort of an unofficial kickoff to the basketball season. Perhaps it turned out to be a better financial decision for ESPN. Who am I to know? But yes. Suffer from insomnia. Got us to watching basketball at three thirty in the morning as part of this marathon. Well, no more. Unfortunately, it's a sad day. Is it not rapid sports? Central was the final thoughts after their son WTMJ, Milwaukee sports just got louder. This.
What's going on with GE and Home Depot stocks?
"They decided to sell out four billion dollars worth of stock in Baker Hughes, a GE company the ideas is able to cut their stake to just above fifty percent from the current sixty two and a half percent. Baker Hughes is buying back. The half dollars worth of stock. And it's a ranging on GE's behalf to sell the rest. Oh, you mentioned GE's higher. Baker Hughes also up one point seven percent. You could argue that this arrangement that they've made with GE kind of removes an overhang might say for the company because let's face it. When g has the situation that it does they're looking to sell assets where they kiss CEO Larry cope was talking about just yesterday. He had to figure something was going to happen here. I don't know overhang also implies if you go out on that overhang. Don't take that last step. I'm looking at GE bonds right now, they're trading at around eighty two cents on the dollar. Yeah. Just goes to show you how much concern there is about. Jeez. Business and let's face it. It's all about what's happening with gas turbines power generation. Absolutely. I mean that that's been an issue demand's fallen off. They've had some mechanical issues with products that they've sold that they've got a, thanks. They're just basically a tough time here. All right. Let's take a look at another stock making a little bit of a move today. And this has to do with Brookefield Brookefield is buying the Johnson Controls unit for thirteen point two billion dollars. Not shabby the main Johnson Controls has been getting out of the auto parts business. They spun off the seat maker called adamant as part of this pullback and this deal with the private equity arm Brookfield asset management really complete their withdrawal from the business focusing on as the name suggests controls and we're talking about building controls typically. So that's the focus going forward. People liked the idea that it's going to be a more focused company mean clearly from the reaction to this deal with the stock up three point six percent. You know, you're talking about one of the biggest gains on the day, the S and P five hundred couple of stocks making a move lower Tyson Foods profit forecast. Disappoint some analysts. Also, taking a look at the PG and E that stock just can't get a break that has to do with the wildfires in California ongoing litigation.
