"That's it you know so it it was like it's not like we're never got off the boat A lot of places we could get off the boat everyday. So do you still have? The boat is Is something you plan to do again. No we while I love to do it again. But we couldn't just keep the boat sitting there Has Frost advisory are that that was our life savings basically put into the boat and then You have to pay to store the boat and even expect Recession coming on and whatnot. I'm Kinda glad we're able to sell the boat because that that's kind of birth our backup plan but it was hard. I didn't really want to sell it but When we made the decision not to go this winter we went not this winter. That's just supposed to be over here but it's not like we got three feet of snow here But anyways it was the when we decided to go this winter we decided to sell the boat and so if we do it again we'll be able to probably get. We would get a little bigger boat because now we know how to sail good enough because we didn't want to get beyond what we could sail. You know like if you're as soon as you get into forty foot boat. It weighs three times as much so you need that much. Bigger sales. There's more force on the rigging inches gets much higher consequences. Something goes wrong compared to a smaller boat and your storage fees go up at your maintenance. Everything just goes up That's why we went with thirty four football and I'm glad we did. We could have got a forty foot boat. For example that was a lot worse shape than sexing the whole time but the boat we got was an excellent boat and didn't need any major worker or anything like that a cool Yeah man that's Staff Yeah so you also used to be sheep guide right and now you guide more. Oh I thought used to be a sheep. Guide some point she printing But I haven't guided but I would totally take sheep guiding job. Someone's got one called. I mostly who has it as a call? Everybody listening in but I've Because where I grew up wasn't in the mountains so the guiding when I was sixteen I started working for an outfitter guiding forbear for Black Bear. And for. But when you're eighteen you're allowed to guide Ten than a barren moose predominantly and then Once I came back from sailing I did fishing guiding in the Arctic for the summer and then did some elk and Moose and waterfowl guiding so. I grew up hunting fishing trapping all the time but because I work full-time I could only do a little bit here and there but I I really it. Yeah catching like giant Lakers up in the Arctic. Were two or joint rookies or something like that. Yeah no it's Lake Lake Trout and I like the Big Sweep. Pull out our loud so far sixty two pounds. It's a completely untouched. Fishery because there was never any indigenous settlements on that lake out there was never any net session. And it's just a huge lake like Kevin macneil who bought the fishing lodge it used to be a Caribou hunting lodge? That's the reason why it exists But then they used through politics whatever they pulled those Caribou tags So that he turned it into a fishing lodge But like Kevin only explored maybe a tenth of the lake. He's been there since I think. Twenty fifteen or thirteen something like that every summer but it's so big that the only way to really explore it is would be to take your camp you know and like you know go all day in one direction and try to like make a loop but it would take you all summer so that we're still finding cool spots and there's no charts of it. Of course rights were charting in on our chart plotters every time we go explore But it's it's it's a really cool like there's fishing. There's musk says wolverines care and It's pretty special. Yeah if you I know. You've been up North Scotland. But it's it's it's a whole different thing like it's there is no jets flying over. There is no noise like it's it's graces pretty awesome. I mean even the as far north as I've been has been awesome. You know it's just been one of those things floating on a river and you. Musk ox about forty yards away. You're like wow. It's basically a love Scott saying well that's awesome. Thanks for coming on and joining us today and telling us about adventures that went awry and adventures. The went really well. So been how How do people find you people Go fishing with all that stuff for sure yet. You could definitely end. That's something I'm I'm probably going to be more open to had people in the past you know ask. Can I basically hire you to take me on this pack raft adventure or whatever this sort of canoe trip for And I'M GONNA be opened in more of that. A hinterland outdoors. I got a facebook page. That's called that As well as instagram hinterland doors Youtube Channel Hinterland sailing and hinterland outdoors you can check those out. I'm still working. "So you learn you learn from the first trip that I will will folded this done. Yeah we had. We learned a bike. The pride and end the financial cost was part of it. Too Right Nam. And we're in the wood river there was no bailout option. Really like even had we turned we would have had to bail out. Yeah once we went through that scorch the bailout option taken as long as there was no good bail out option on on the wood river. That's why it's really not a good idea. Guk Yeah it was. Kinda it's really committed and that's what I learned you know subsequent to Some of these trips says it's not about you know fifty kilometers Bush. Blacking is not equivalent to fifty kilometers bushwack. Like there's some fifty kilometers. Bush whacking. It's easy you can do that in a day and sometimes it's literally will take you two weeks and you still can't do it so you gotta sometimes you can know enough to be dangerous right. And that's how I was at the at the beginning. I had nothing experienced that think I had enough experience but I was incorrect. So then between those two trips we did trip A first ascent of the upper monk men river in provincial park which is a Tumbler Ridge area. And that was a really cool trip where everything went. According to plan where we hiked in to monk Middle Lake and we went and climbed up Paxton peak which is You know again no formation. No trail that sort of thing. We ended up climbing this mountain. The fog which was unfortunate because we never did get to see what it looked like there. and there wasn't enough detail. Topo maps to like know which way to do it so we kept getting cliff doubts but there was a series. I think it was like twenty four marked waterfalls on our on our float out And it was just beautiful. Beautiful area actually went back the next year and ice climbed those waterfalls But it's Yeah it's it's SORTA thing that very few people get in there because it's A. It's a long multiday hike and the pack. Rafts made it much more easy when you go to the river. When there's no trail to hike through there would take forever but tariffs through there. It's actually a very pool drop in nature where there's Basically easy paddling and then waterfall easy. Paddling waterfall. Home news was that trump was about five or six. It really should take more like that part of what you know. We were young and energetic and we only had five days right. So we wouldn't do. You believe people would take five days just to hike into the lake but we hiked into the lake and then went up into the turns they call it up into the mountains climbed the mountain. You know come back and rafted out in that same amount of time which paragraphs helped because you can Do trips that are twice as long But ideally. It's way way more fun less punishing to take twice that long.

"Wound so so they had to doctors. Government support everything and they were like no. This is just too rugged country day. It's it's just it's just like that like there. There's parts of it are good. Just those sections with the gorgeous that are that gnarly that In the river is not run a maybe at certain levels in with better skill level you could run more of that but to this day like of the Big Name. Kayak guys have run out because logistically. It's just It'd be incredibly difficult to do. I don't WanNa say impossible but it sure wouldn't wouldn't be easy even knowing more and you know like looking back. I learned how to calculate your drop of feet for mile because there were sections. There were poor Tajuddin. We're looking up at the river in. Its two three hundred feet above us. And it's not that far away right so you know we should have been able to figure that out like knowing what we know now. But I would just kind of looking at squiggly lines on a map and saying you know seeing the gradient on the top O- on that doesn't look too bad. I got home. You took your map. Were you figured out this? Would River took a big sharpen? You put a big X. through it yeah. I didn't even know enough like we were planning these trips with the back map books which are awesome but have gotten into lots of trouble. Because they're they're not detailed enough and even like traveling do lot of exploring in northern BC territories stuff. There's errors on topple maps all over the place. Like they're they're just like. Oh that mountains. Not there or this river doesn't go this way like there's. I was surprised how many mistakes are on the top maps. So you're you're supposed to be out in five days. It other people like you know they seven day eight other people getting real worried about where you are able to talk to anybody. Did you have a Reach or something like that. Yeah we did which was good And that was. That was a big thing which I hadn't realized is So I had a spot tracker that point and I always would keep data dry suit pocket right. That was the you know if we had to press that we could've but the truth is could have got to US anyway but that was like a morale-boost sore deals you know and that was kind of like it's we could have got to the Alberta side And then we were in a national park. That was our theory anyways that because we're in a park and we got our proper permit the park side of it that We'd probably could get rescued at that point if we could get to. Alberta but Lucado his reach in its pack for some reason And we didn't find his vote for like three more days tours. I can't say goes so you had a five day trip to turn into an eleven day trip. Not only that you. So you had half the calories you thought for the trip probably not only that at one point you were gone the other pack which probably had half the calories remaining so loops pack which was down again breath but we so we basically had next snowfield for that sphere four days. Probably a little bit more actually weeds. Lot of blueberries. So you're able to at least check in right with people and say hey like we're fine. It's just GonNa take a bit or in clock not until we got luke's. Pack Kazan hadn't rich once we found loops boat like just hanging by a branch in the braided section of the river. So his boat navigated those Gorgeous Solo one chamber so that was awesome and and then we found and he had most of the foods. We were like super stoked because we had found the food we had Tommy in reach. You know we knew it was gonNA be good. We didn't think Parable about but we actually repaired his boat and we puncture my boat literally on trips But yeah so like we`ll. I lost my paddle to swim. So we we eventually found once. We got to the braided section. We found an old outfitters camp. Like maybe from the fifties or something. 'cause they're one on through the braided section. There's not really a trail until you get to a certain point but you can take a horse up the up the floodplain China So we found some ward and since screws and five gallon bucket and we made a paddle out of the bottom of Bound bucket and a bucket lead and then the screws and the wood that we found So then we were able to proceed rafting a little bit more carefully because his vote was held together was tie back tape. So you channel your inner a survivor man. At that point you know Funny thing about this trip is a luke kind of accuses me of an optimistic memory but I I remember this as being a fun trip like we had a lot of flying singing and joking and You know but we did. We had to be resourceful. Because what else you do. 'cause I was honestly more worried about my wife. Gm ticked off. Because I'm super late and and I'm actually pastoring a church at this time in small town the bolt so I got people. I'm supposed to be responsible to. I'm supposed to be at work so I sent a message out at one point To basically tell my wife don't worry but we're GONNA be late through stepper messages. Would eventually I was worried that I was going to be in trouble? Slapstick as we got injured a little bit and You know but basically. I was painting the picture that were doing the best that we can. But I think that's when she started to worry because We were low on food. Like I'm I was probably like a hundred and forty pounds soaking wet when I started that trips and I lost thirteen pounds in whatever eleven days. It is so Arkansas. Like we dropped all this elevation. Yeah it another side again to go down the world so give a picture of paddle by chance. I think we find. I think it's it's not on that one saying it might have been some tale thumbnail for the Youtube Video. But I don't think it is anymore but B- Yeah if you go on. My facebook may back linked to the Elbe or something But I got like one hundred pictures from this trip. So that's one thing that we had the presence of mind to do and because you know what else are we doing we did. We took a lot of video actually started making like. Db's video is like thirteen minutes long. But I had like three hours of footage from this trip so I started making a longer version of it and I just it's still not finished unfortunately but But all of that stuff is in there. That's one of these days If I lose my job because of this Coleman maybe I'll finish editing arrested Did your wife is go to church in total congregation Like man he's somewhere in the wilderness and he says he's fine. He's not going to be here or yeah I remember. I don't think I missed an additional Sunday so that helped but I I was. I must have been emailing our admin assistant or something because they knew that I do this sort of things. I don't think it was tremendously character but we did have like By the time we finally made it eleven days later my parents and my wife and Two Friends of ours. They were concerned enough that they went to go meet us at the trail head but we actually beat them out and we're actually on our way home because I'm like. Oh no I'm a grab for being so late But they were prepared to you know. Help us Hiked the last bit some but we were by. Then we had you know were we. Were smelling the barn. Where ready to go Buddy Act. My knee was pretty messed up from the Luke Luke. A little gambled and We were like eating half a Granola bar for a day. Sort of thing at that point but once you're once you've been going uphill forever. And all the sudden you're floating downhill on a river. It's awesome right like you feel like you've just been given a new lease on life because the rivers doing all the work and so the we ran that Whirlpool River. You know all the way back to civilization and there was some poor Taj on that. I thought my boat did one point and and whatever but relatively speaking compared to what we had done the previous week. It was a walk in the park. Pretty road speaking. You guys were all smiles. At that point we totally totally. Were you know like we did like a fifty two kilometer? Day so I don't know what's at thirty miles issue or something gaming. Forget how many feet but like straight from the bottom all the way up to Athabasca Basset and one day. 'cause we were just you know we were you know after having survived that ordeal in whatever. He's ten it's amazing what you can do is have to do it like that was one of the benefits of that trip is You know when you have to do something difficult and you do it realize okay. You know your limits. Aren't I wouldn't have done that on purpose. But it was a confidence-building thing was also celebrating reminder that I need to learn more when I was doing as far as trip leading taboo. It an overall positive thing. Wow so let's go onto you look at some other trips right. The one where you went over the Mount the strategy gain of that walked. Yeah that that one. I'm sure was not as adventurous. Is the Wood River Expedition But still was a pretty Remote.

"Those will be released by the national association of realtors. And a guy Johnson, you know, one of the things that you mentioned earlier is this kind of recognition of a slowdown in China. And I think our next guest Stephen Brochu of Missouri who securities maybe he can tell us a little bit about how that slow down might affect the US economy. Stephen shootout, thanks for being with us. What do you think is the China slowdown already being factored into our understanding of what the US economy will do in two thousand nineteen it is it's already being factored into the markets to be honest with you, but even more broad than just China? There's a global slowdown going on with two thousand seventeen was marked by global acceleration in close that growth that was synchronized two thousand eighteen is we moved into the second half really began to witness a synchronized global decelerating growth, and that's going to be an important factor as we head into two thousand nineteen how policymakers. Respond is really gonna depend on how we in two thousand nineteen. That's a result of that kind of environment. How big a stimulus? Do you think we're going to get from the Chinese authorities in the beginning of twenty nine thousand nine Steve interesting? They've already discovered that monetary policy isn't working for them. And once you get up to this level of around two hundred and fifty percent debt to GDP, including everything other than banks. You get into an environment in which the global economy economy doesn't seem to have the same response to stimulus whether it be fiscal or monetary policy. Take the US economy, for example, you know, Trump spent a heck of a lot of money, the GOP spent a heck of a lot of money. And when you look back at two thousand eighteen years of questioning like the best we got for what we spent in. Now, we're already decelerating. So once these levels of debt to GDP policy response is the response to policy is dampened dramatically. So they're not going to get the bang for their buck either. Okay. So we'll get the bang for the buck from the Chinese is that they're going to try something different. Could we see outlining areas of stimulus that could come through fiscal and monetary? I start building things that don't need which is exactly what you're paying did in the nineteen nineties, and it's left Japan in an environment of a much higher level of debt to GDP and a disinflationary factor. The thing you have to understand is we live in a world of global extra supply. And once you start from that basic assumption where we're going in the responses that we're seeing to monetary policy and fiscal policy really begin to start to become clear because when you live in a world of excess supply, maybe when you try to provide stimulus you can use some of that excess supply, but you have to remember there's always somebody else willing to come in. And replace you deflationary risks don't go away. And it's the deflationary risks that markets are reflecting. That's why Japanese rates this morning. A back one back below zero. Steve or shootout, tell us about US corporations the tax cuts, and why that money didn't go into capital investment much of the money went to stock buybacks and dividend increases. This is one of the things we were anticipating from day one again because of the world of excess supply in a world of excess supply you don't need more capital equipment. So what you wind up doing is use that excess cash for financial engineering, which is exactly what we did. Again. Once you start from that premise of a world of excess supply everything that's happened in the last two years is very very well. Understood and comes out very very clear in the wash. Given given the fact that they didn't need to build plant and equipment. What were they going to do with the excess? They had to return it to the shareholder in some way returning it to a dividend would be great, but you can't sustain the dividend for a long, maybe you just holding. You can't keep on quitting the gross in the dividend. But buying back. The share raises the earnings per share and raising earnings per share is what drives CEO and corporate compensation with Dr stock prices. And that's what they're all. Attempting to do is drive. The stock price. In terms of what we're going to see out of congress this year. I the the indications are at the moment is that we're gonna see gridlock in Washington. Is that something that is going to be in your muddles good for the US economy? Can you model it what what are the indications of what you're seeing right now? Well, gridlock in certain environments is good in certain environments is not so good. Gridlock in an environment. Where markets have discounted. Only negative changes. I e tax increases or regulatory increases are factors such as that gridlock can be good in an environment where the market was looking for Trump to do positive things that they thought would be positive like a fiscal stimulus. Bill middle class tax cut for one example, or being willing to go along with it infrastructure spending Bill, which has been a big thing on Congress's docket for the last few years. Those things would have been perceived as good the gridlock now stops them from happening. So the markets in the last few weeks have been in the process of taking out the discounting of those potential positives. If Trump had retained control with the Republicans retained control of the house of representatives. Now, the markets had to take that good news out. And that's part of the reason why the markets, but in the consolidation that it's in thanks very much for being with us. Stephen reshoot, oh is the chief US economy and managing director for Mizzou ho securities giving us his. Look at the global economy and a guy Johnson just to reiterate that tesla has increased its board size to eleven from nine. He's they've added Larry Ellison founder of oracle as well as Kathleen Wilson Thompson, the head of human resources at Walgreens boots alliance. And it's giving a boost to the shares of tesla.
