"Those a touch of time. Travelling at last night's tony awards. It honored work dating back to twenty one thousand nine hundred before. The theaters fell silent so it was a busy night from rome during this studio by my wolf thirty critical theater critic for the international new times. Good morning manningham. Right tell us big winners and losers please headlines well the the big winner was on rouge the musical which i mean it did open on broadway over two years ago. But of course Broadway shut down on march twelfth. Twenty twenty and the tony. Awards honored that preceding season and truncated season. So rich won ten awards which boats well fritz london transfer. It opens in london in december. The big loser was a very provocative. Play which i saw new york and liked very much by a black american rhetoric. Called jeremy harris colts slave play. And that was nominated for twelve. Tony's and didn't win any In fact the best play word ended up going to Matthew lopez's the inheritance which is a two-parter that had been seen in london although he himself has latinas writer based in america so it was an evening full of surprises and it did spread the wealth around to other shows as well. We'll get to them in a minute. But let's focus on slave play for a minute because this to have twelve nominations and not get anything. What does that say about how people react to this. Yes i suspect that will be. There's already been some Doubt expressed on twitter doubt. Tilting into outrage Tony so white. You know there's been a lot of discussion about the need to broaden. Broadway's base in broadway's re-met and to give a play that puts racial on the front foot. Such short shrift. I think will prompt a lot of navel-gazing this morning in and around new york and tell us about the inheritance with the inheritance in a way. It's interesting because it's a place steeped in the Aids pandemic and as several of its winners. Last night said interesting for that. Play to be honored as we are hopefully coming out of another pandemic so it's one pandemic looking back at another pandemic is to play the began at london's young vic moved to the west and then to broadway. Interestingly the critical response to new york wasn't particularly strong the response to slay much stronger. But i think the inheritance Kind of grappled. The voters. imagination's much did this strange application of opposed button. Have on the way that the tonys have been put together took. Everybody's got lots and lots of nominations because you've only got half a season go. Yeah i mean there were there were something like eighteen shows eligible which is not very many and To close march twenty. Twenty for bud close right. When the seasons heft was about to ramp up in the following weeks meant that lots wonderful sounding shows never got to open the joke. Was that all you had to do. A show up on broadway this season to be nominated and in fact that was true in the case of best actress musical a perform. I love actually who won. he was the only nominee in his category. He was the only nominee so guess what he won. How wonderful. i wonder if you're surprised when his neighbors tell us a little bit more about what. The tonys will hopefully doing abroad raina. Because we've we've got through the mess that you've just described and now we have tony's back there for is broadway. Yeah well that's the. That's the real thing i mean the olivier award swisher london's version the tonys for the same equivalent season given out last october. So you could ask well. Why weren't tony's giving out then as well. And the short answer is because there was no broadway at that point. And what the broadway league who administered the tonys decided to do was wait until broadway reopened which it has done as of september fourteenth in. Use the tony awards to kickstart attention towards after all vital part of of the new york economy in the american economy. Which is the broadway theatre so. There's always been thinking that the tonys are really little more than laborat- commercial for broadway. But i think that's really true this year. It's a reminder. That broadway is here it exists even if you have to be masked and vaccinated to enjoy it It is there for you and please come see us. Everything happened on september the fourteenth briefly. How have things been. Have people been filling the seats and well during themselves interesting. The broadway league is no longer reporting attendance for this season. And that's the first time in a very long time that's happened and i think that's because we're not supposed to know the exact answer i think All we know is anecdotally the musicals doing well the pleasure doing less well. Let's see what happens towards the end of the year when there is a whole flood of the shows that should have opened eighteen months ago. Matt thank you so much joining us in the studio. That was the theater critic met wolf. Unless tony's that's all we have for today's perga- many thanks to our producers reese james danube h. And charlie film macoute a researcher sophie monaghan combs and our studio manager christie evans editing. Broadway Will Not Disclose Box Office Grosses

"You probably know usually the broadway league releases figures every monday about box office grosses. They're not releasing those this year. They they've said stuff about like well you know plays are staggered is not the same. Also there's There's reduced reduced shows for a lot of shows. Not everybody's doing eight shows a week so we don't know i do know that waitress that the night it opened they did make an announcement that waitress itself had broken All the previous broadway records for single performance ticket sales. They made it almost two hundred thousand dollars in ticket sales But besides that all when i was at passover tusa empty seats When i was at hagerstown. I didn't see a single one and i'm sure that last night i think the odds are very good. That every seat was filled last night. They would have been sold out all the people who wanted to be part of that history. How it will continue that way.

"Word is Phelan's in San Francisco. I'm Ed Baxter. This is Bluebird radio. All right. Thank you so much. You are listening to Bloomberg, BusinessWeek, Jason Kelly and Carol Masser. Herewith you reading on the Bloomberg right now? Uh, what am I reading? I am reading. Um Blow on stories and a lot of it has to do with the reopening because I just feel like we're kind of glue to these stories because again it's like two steps forward one step back, and I'm really fascinated with it. And I have to say I'm looking forward to You know next guest because we caught up with her mid May we talked about the impossible right? The shutting down of New York City's famed Broadway theaters are still dark because of the pandemic this week. We heard that the theaters will stay closed for at least the rest of the year. So let's bring back Charlotte, Samar and she's president of the Broadway League. She joins us on the phone in New York City, talking with us about So ultimately, hopefully fingers crossed that Broadway finds its way back. Charlotte It is so nice to have you back with us. How are you? Well, I'm good, considering that all of my people are not working. I'm not happy about that. I know what a rough week. I mean, We saw the news come down, you know? Was it a pretty clear decision that there was no way that Broadway could come back this year? Yes, it wass. I mean, we've been watching everything from medical and scientific way and our the people we're working with and that we've hired have said We're cautiously optimistic about after the first of the year, but for now, there's just no way we can accomplish your goal, which is to make sure that the cast the crew and the audience are all safe, so we won't be back. Until that can be And so talk to us about the economics of this, Charlotte because I mean, obviously they're economic considerations. And you talked with us about this The last time you were with us. Their economic considerations on a socially distance performance that makes it virtually impossible. And you did a nice job of explaining that, But the economic implications of no Broadway are massive. They really are and not just for Broadway, but all of the businesses that depend on Broadway. We either hire or are responsible for 97,000 jobs. That's the local restaurants. That's the retail stores in the area that The hotel's It's the museums and the vicinity, the parking garages and they don't go backto work until Broadway goes back to work. So it's not just Broadway that's hurting. It's everybody that depends on Broadway. Yeah, I am curious some of the questions. You know the conversations you guys were having, because it's this comes in a week where we did talk to, you know, someone who manages a family owned hotel down in downtown New York and you know what they're doing, And I think, Jason they said something like 20 or 30% capacity. You know and how they're doing things differently, and it is a very different experience in terms of shoes being cleaned, and everything sanitized there is there is just no way to do Broadway. Physically or financially right on a smaller scale of not really making the goal, always feeling as many seats as possible. That's correct. We are heavy, heavily unionized business and we have the best theatrical employees in the world. But they're also the most expensive and The costs of Broadway continued to skyrocket because the world expects us to deliver the best of everything. The best set the best digital technology as well as the best actors and It's it's an expensive business to run. The the The history has shown that in the best years, one out of four shows recoups on its investment. And for the long run, it's one out of five shows recoup on their investments. So AH, significantly reduced audience just doesn't work. If if we Open and have audiences of 50% or less. Broadway won't work. So we have to make sure that when we opened, we have ticket sales to help. Keep the show's open because it would be a disaster tohave the show's open and then have to close three weeks later, right? So, Charlotte. I wonder because I know you're talking to producers and playwrights and all the folks who are on the creative side as well. I mean, what does this do for shows that were You know, maybe not quite ready to go. But we're teed up Tio open and in the second half of the year, Or maybe some shows that that were scheduled to open at the beginning of next year. Does everything get pushed? How many things Just don't happen. What's your sense of How this sort of ripples through what we see when hopefully we are able to return to Broadway early next year. Well, Unfortunately, we have only had two shows that were to open right after we closed Broadway on March 12th. And one long running show decide not to come back and that was frozen. And then there were the two that aren't going to be performing. But that leaves about 35 shows that could be coming back when we reopen. And what happens is if they all come back, there won't be enough theaters for the shows that were coming in because many of the shows on Broadway are what you call limited runs that they were going to be running for. 12 weeks or 16 weeks and If those shows do in fact come back, and we hope they do than everything that was scheduled for January. Our spring will be pushed back a bit, and we sure hope that all of those shows get to come back. Those people work. 4 to 6 years, sometimes more to bring their show to Broadway. So we want them to have their day. I have to say I was kind of looking forward to it. I think.

'No Room For The Modest Hit Anymore': Broadway Prepares For Summer Closings

"Broadway is coming off a record season in terms of attendance and box office receipts with twenty nine shows to choose from right now. Five of those shows though including some big budget disappointments agents are going to close over the next two weekends jeff london explains broadway attendance was up fourteen percent between twenty eighteen twenty nineteen generating one one point eight three billion dollars in ticket sales. It's been a great year for broadway and that's true if you're one of the producers of a blockbuster show but not everyone is i've been invited to the party says jeremy gerard who's been covering broadway as a reporter and critic for over three decades when he tallied up the eleven shows that opened in close this season though shows accounted for something like one hundred and forty million dollars in investment and that's a huge number at a time time when we're seeing these blockbuster shells and more reports of higher and higher box office grosses that tells me that we're in trouble that there's no room for the modest hit more several shows always close right after the tony awards if their box offices soft and they haven't won any any tony's and that happened with three shows this year charlotte saint martin president of the broadway league the organization that represents producers in theater owners. She says every summer shows close. We have a history of summer closings that goes back forever in two thousand fourteen. There was six in two thousand twelve. There was it's eight but this year there are more and what's unusual is that instead of hanging onto labor day to cash in on tourist dollars. Five musicals are closing in the next two weekends king kong which bumped up the losses significantly because it cost a staggering thirty six point five million dollars the prom tom pretty woman the share show and be more chill. Jerry gehring is a lead producer of that show. Who's cast album enjoyed more than two hundred million streams before a sold out run off broadway last summer but it never found real traction on broadway. It was a lot of factors like a lot of shows. We didn't get the tony love. We didn't get a straight across. Critical response. Broadway is incredibly expensive and you have to fill a lot of seats to to stem the losses. The producers decided to close in mid august because a lot of its target audience teams. Go back to school now before labor day gearing. Thanks says there are hoping to make back some of the nine million dollars they lost with a tour and licensing the broadway league's charlotte saint martin points out that most shows lose money four out of five shows don't recoup some don't lose all but don't recoup and yes. A lot of people lost a lot of money. There's no question that shows cost more in if they don't recoup. There's more money being lost but why so many this summer new york times critic ben brantley has a theory theory. All the shows were talking about the musicals at least including the unfortunate king kong. Just aren't that good so perhaps we're talking about discernment for wants what's journalist jeremy gerard has another theory. There are five shows lined up for every fever that becomes available and it's a seller's market. It's a market for vertu landlords and they want the big hits in there so i believe that they're putting a lot of pressure on producers of shows that are under performing to cut bait as is quickly as possible to get potential new hit him for example after kinky boots closed this spring moulin rouge moved right into the same theater and it's a smash hit for n._p._r.
