"Easy goer in the run down the stretch at pimlico he of course would be denied the Triple Crown by easy goer in the Belmont stakes, but once again, we'll get the better of his rival that year in the breeders cup classic. Welcome back to the am wager weekend stakes preview here on let's get back to the action they race 11 at pimlico tomorrow is the Maryland sprint, $100,000 on the line for the three year olds and up going 6 furlongs on the main track field of 7 coming together here in the morning line favorite is number 7 nakatomi. Yeah, and I think nakatomi might just get a perfect setup here. Number 8, straight no chaser is a talented four year old for Dan black or who is all speed all the time. Number ten wonder where Craig is a veteran for Brittany Russell who was really, really good in 2021 and pretty good in 2022 and kind of has a leveled off a little bit, but did respond with an optional claiming win last time out, but also needs the lead goes to the front should push tempo. They're one or two others in here. Al loves Josie, who I think are going to be forwardly placed. And that just leads to not get told me who I don't know how good he actually is. Third place performance in a grade three in the mud and aqueduct in March won an optional claimer at Keenum last fall, nakatomi looks like kind of a good not great course. I think they expected more when they shipped to ask Scott early in his career. But I think if he's good enough, he's going to win here because I think he's going to sit a great trip off the pace. I'm interested to watch prevalence number two for Brendan Walsh hasn't been in great form, but I think there are excuses recently and maybe he also sits a nice trip out of price. All right, I agree with everything that you said. And I think nakatomi is the right horse because I think he is going to get the right trip. I'm not also sure that he hasn't been facing a little bit better for the most part than what he's going to see tomorrow in the grade three Maryland sprint. 5 to two on the morning line, I think that's a very fair price. And I would bet him at 5 to two nakatomi for both Dave and myself in the grade three Maryland sprint race number 11. 12th race is the James W Murphy. Three year olds here going one mile on the turf. Nice field of 9 coming together here. And number 9 naga rock making a second start of the year is the 8 to 5 morning line favorite. Yeah, and it's for a start was really good and the Transylvania keenland he ran second in a field of 11 went off as a favor, but was 7 to two is the favored, lost that race to most stash, the horse that finished third web slinger came back and won a stakes race on the Derby card. I think nag a rock is going to be really tough in here, putting blinkers on for gram motion. That being said, I do like a couple of others a little bit. The one horse fantastic again for Wesley ward gets Lasix for the first time. If the synthetic form translates to the turf, fantastic again who ran third against two fills in the Jeff ruby at turfway park in one back to back races at turf way late last year and early this year, it is a little bit interesting to me. A wonderful justice for Brad Cox at three year old son of justifies working really, really well, wasn't anywhere close, but I think had just too much trouble. I think the last race against Niagara is a toss out and the two before that were really good. But I do think the favor is the most likely winner in here. So do I, and I think it's really a two horse race between naga rock and fantastic again. Fantastic again, efforts on the synthetic track over at turfway park are easily good enough to make him one of the ones to beat in the spot. He's only run on the turf once and there was a terrible effort last summer at Belmont park and he was gone for about almost two months after that race. So there's a chance that something happened wrong in that race and it's just toss out. He certainly bred to handle the turf being by fantastic out of a broken Vale mayor. But Nagar rock is the more is the easier play of the two because we know that he loves the turf. There's no question about that. And we know he's got class and we also know that he's written by a top writer in flavian Pratt once again. Nagar rock for me, but I'm going to use ones and 9s if I play horizontal wagers as far as the James W Murphy goes tomorrow at pimlico featured vent of the day featured event of the weekend. Is the grade one Preakness, million and a half dollars on the line for the three year olds. Distance, as always, a mile and three sixteenths, proximate post time 7 O 1 p.m. Eastern Time. 8 were entered 7 will run as first mission comes out and all the eyes are going to be on The Kentucky Derby winner number three mage. He is the only horse returning from the Derby to run in the Preakness. And he's going to be really tough. I mean, there were 23 horses entered to run in the Derby in 18 actually did and none of the 22 rivals have made is in this field. Now that's not to say that this is the second tier or the third tier for a variety of reasons. These horses didn't run in Kentucky, but I mean, chase the chaos and coffee with Chris are complete tosses with no chance in my opinion. Now, we've seen horses like that win races. I mean, I didn't like the horse that won that el Camino real Derby, rom Bauer, who won the Preakness a couple of years ago, but I must tell you, I think rombauer's form was way better than chase the chaos who won the el Camino real. So then leaves you with only 5 other horses. Bob Baffert's national treasure and Chad brown's blazing 7s, Steve asked me since red route one and shook McGee he's performed. And I think to varying degrees, they all have a chance. If you told me that national treasure who's putting blinkers on for the first time is going to go straight to the lead and lead gate to wire, I would believe you and think that's feasible and reasonable. The problem with national treasuries, he just doesn't run that well. I mean, he won a maiden race at del mar in September and the other four efforts are all of the good not great variety that's not taking away from the run in the breeders cup juvenile where he was three and three quarter lengths behind forte. He hasn't really improved on that. The third place effort in the sham in January was fine. He was basically a no show in the Santa Anita Derby, and those horses, Mandarin hero, did not run well in the Derby and practical move and skinner were scratched. National treasure might be something, but he's going to need to prove it to me. Blazing 7s to me is not nearly as good as early voting was last year for Chad Brown and looks to me like a dead closer, which I don't really think is what you want. Now blazing 7s his face really, really good horses forte a couple times and tap it trace and yada, yada, yada, but I need to see better. The last two races the bluegrass and found in the youth, he just wasn't very close. Perform in red route one, I think they're dead closers. I think both of them are capable. I actually like red route one, a little bit if there was a wild card if there was a wise guy, that's the one I would pick. I think red route one is run against really, really good courses. And quite frankly, it's been competitive sometimes.

"RN. Number to get in 888-966-4776. If you're on the phone's hold on one second because as promised we need to pick James brain a little bit and get his best play for the weekend. All right, James, so you said you like something on the Preakness card, but not necessarily the Preakness being your best bet where are we going? I'm gonna go with the tick laying. I liked Charles as big a frosted departure because you know he's gonna be a price in there. I see an intense paste store in there Havana meltdown pavit proved right. I mean, they can just all wing in and I expect a super child to show speed off of the layoff. I like number 7 prints of Jericho shipping in from Laurel cutting back to a sprint for Brittany Russell. You know, this is the worst that one food races in a row by open length is 6 for a long while at 7 for a long, and didn't work out at two turns for him last time, but I like to cut back like the pace set up. I think he'll be finishing fastest of all and I hope to get every bit of 9 to two number 7 perseid Jericho and the Chick-fil-A. All right, so it sounds like you and Charles are kind of on the same page that you think somebody's got to close in the race and looking at the ultimate pass performances of bris net dot com. Late pace last race both number three frosted departure and your best bet prince of Jericho have the top rating, which is basically saying that they came home faster than everybody else and you're looking for that same type of running style. This coming Saturday in race number 6, the chick laying a grade three event, going 6 furlongs, proximate post time is right at one 29 p.m. Eastern Time. All right, let's go back out to the phone. Steve in New York. You've got Bobby and James on the brisket dot com call in show. So, fellas, how's it going? Hey, Steve, what's going on? Good. Not much, not much. A couple of weeks ago, I called you guys and told you Tapping price, no shot for this horse hit the board. Not one, two, not nothing. You'd be able to track. And I called to bring that up, not because of I want to knock time to try it, but because this horse first mission, this same thing, here we go again, everybody loves this horse coming at a clean one. And this, I thought there was no value in the Preakness. I got to be honest because I do think mage, it's just going to walk over this field. What's left of it? But now that everybody's this is going to take all this money, there is value, I think, now, I do like national treasure on the lead. I think he's going to be there. I don't know if he's going to have enough in the stretch to hang on for a second, but I'm going to use all these longer shots on the board. I've seen this play out a million times. You know, you had that bomb that ran in behind American pharaoh and all these horses they come in off The Kentucky Derby, and usually you get a good price for a second. I think I'm going to use national treasure. Maybe some other long shots, but the key to the race really is to get first mission out of the trifecta completely. This horse is not, you know, he ran against the avian Lion and baffert is saying Arabian line to the sir Barton, I think, right? Like a baffert thought that was a good race. He's not skipping out an opportunity to run one two three in the Preakness. So I just wanted to touch on that. And then in the black eyed student tomorrow, I know fly's is probably too good, but Fletcher has a horse or Rosario that I think James, I don't know what you think about it, but I think he should be up there late. Maybe get in the exact and maybe upset. 40. Something. That's 40,000 or something. I think that. Oh, really? Yeah, I heard that those are gonna scratch both Phillies in the black eyed season. Bobby dino. I haven't heard anything, but to be perfectly honest, I'm one of the few remaining people that is not on Twitter. So I'm last to the party as far as getting this kind of information. By the way, not being on Twitter seems like a good thing to do. From everything that I've been seeing over the last few months with different horse racing people. So I'm very happily not on Twitter and I'll get the information from you guys. But I think the Philly that Steve's talking about is frosty O'Toole. Who was coming out the gazelle. Yeah, and miracle is the other pledge of affiliate. But I think frosty O tool is the one that you were referring to right Steve. Yeah, that's unfortunate, then, because I thought that was the price Rosario is really good. I noticed that at pimlico. This weekend, he usually just sits back, sits on the rail and gets up there countering to hit the exact or again to try to number so that's unfortunate, but really, I think the Frick miss is just made all the way. I think he's going to run over his skill. I don't think there's much competition for him. Wait a minute. I got a question for you. I just want to play devil's advocate here. Because you may be right. So what the running style for first mission is obviously different than the running style for tap at price. Is it just something about the races at keenland you didn't like? Because don't forget, first mission beat disarmed by about 5 or 6 links in disarm actually ran very well in The Kentucky Derby. Yeah, you know, and I think he really said lexicon Derby. I think he ran about as good as he's going to run. And I don't think, I don't see him really moving forward off of that race. And for him to run with a horse like mage, he would have I think he's a good horse. Let me run. I think it's a good horse.

"You could do everything on the grounds, but until you're out there riding a race, that's really the only fitness you could get is going out there. You know, you made quite a mark for yourself in this game show. Then 1548 wins coming into today and several greatest stakes to your credit. And now you and your wife, Brittany, doing this together and she has really started to take off. And she has built herself into one of the top trainers, not just in that region, but certainly nationally too. What's that like? This whole dynamic and going down this road together now, it seems like it would make for a very powerful pairing. Yeah, just, you know, very proud of us. She's got some really nice sources in the barn and some really good owners and clients. She's got a great team behind her and I'm very proud to be a part of it and to help out and a little bit share in there. So we're a good team together and it seems to be working quite nicely. What's your role other than being the guy that gets a leg up in the afternoons? What's your role in the mornings? When the horses get close to running whether it be getting the gate cards early on or giving them their final workouts and just sort of figuring out what type of horses we have underneath us before we sort of make their maiden before they start their maiden will race horse journey. So I mean, we spend a lot of time in the mornings trying to be on the same page and I guess I know what she wants and she sort of it just works. It's hard for me to explain, but it works. We go on very well in the mornings. And we just, you know, we're just trying to make sure that these horses are ready to run when we walk them over there. Would you want last week's Carter with doppelganger? Oh, absolutely. I don't know. I tell you what, I do gallop them every day though. And I begged her for that opportunity, but we couldn't do that. That would be too much, I think. But yeah, really cool, super proud of him going up there and running like that. Hopefully, hopefully he can keep improving and keep winning those big races for her and her team. That would be great. Yeah, you said that would have been a lot you would have loved to have been aboard him, but that would have been a lot. A lot for you physically. Yeah, just I really hadn't had many races under my belt and I would just, I mean, when I say thrown in the deep and that would be, you know, in the really deep in there, just to go straight after the layoff and write a grade one, but hey, so later, Toledo has picked up the pieces. Yeah, he's doing a fantastic job while I have been on the sidelines. So all credit to him. And getting the job done and writing such a great race. I have the same age and so it works. I mean, he helps me with the horses in the morning. And if Britney has two in the race, we'll split them up. So it's nice. It works. Doppelganger giving Brittany Russell, her first grade one victory of her training career in the Carter last weekend. So a special moment for her, congratulations to Britney on that accomplishment and I'm visiting with her husband Sheldon Russell, the highly accomplished accomplished jockey who is back in the winter circle after another layoff to rehab an injury and hopefully good health going forward for him. Well, you know what? Let me ask you one more question before we talk about the other races at Laurel today because I do want to get your comments on some of those horses Sheldon. But when a hitter in baseball is out for a long time, or when they first start coming back in spring training for the start of a season, they talk about their timing and it takes them a while to get their timing down. I talked about the physical side of it with your rehab and coming back from injuries. How about the timing for a jockey? Is that something that can take a little while to? Yeah, absolutely. It's just these horses never go as fast as they do in the afternoons that they do. In the morning. So the whole when you say that timing, it's just the whole speed of the race is at a different sort of speed. And I'm trying to get that all together. I've had a couple of races before today's card. So hopefully the timing is coming around and we can start taking it out from here on end. All right, let's talk about a couple of the races today. And we'll start with the Federico Tesco. You mentioned earlier, if you can win that race, you're in the Preakness because it is a win in your end for the Preakness and you're going to ride prince of Jericho for Brittany. One of two horses that she has in there. Toledo will be on the other one. Tell me about prince of Jericho. Yeah, prince and jerrika really nice horse to ride. I was lucky enough to be on and then an early stage of his career. I feel like he just keeps improving. Obviously, he's never been this far before. So we'll have to see I'd have to get a really good trip and a bit of a worry around the outside post, but we have we have enough of a run that first turn to get into position and can uncomfortable and get them traveling. So hopefully I picked the right one, right, Mike. Yeah, well you're three to one on the morning line. The other horse is a bit of a longer price with jevon. That is circle the drain who is on the morning line at 8 to one. So you've picked the more highly regarded one, at least in terms of the morning line odds maker. Yeah, and that's, like I said, prince Jack has probably had a couple. I think you said two more races. Just hope I just think just hopefully we get a good trip. So we were on the outside. So like a sharp break and see if we can cross over and not lose too much ground into that first term. And yeah, in the morning she's been doing everything right. Is regular work right? And we couldn't be happy with it. Well, you certainly know how to ride that core Sheldon. So no doubt that you can work out a trip aboard prince of Jericho. How about pharaoh's baby girl in the Weber city mistakes? Yeah, she's coming into the race pretty good. Another one I had started off early in the sprinting made in ranks. She seems to have found her sweet spot stretching out longer. So it would be another one, hopefully the two turns today, hopefully she can relax a little bit, save some energy and get it all together. And be able to finish up. I mean, there's a couple more speed horses in that race. So hopefully all three of us dueling together. But we'll play the break. You will try to be smart and we'll try to save some energy for the end. Britney will also give you a leg up earlier in the card in the 7th race, the heavenly cause takes aboard hybrid eclipse. Tell me more there. Yeah, hi, Brit, hybrids being grateful for Britney and her team. She's an honest Philly. She's not the biggest silly in the buyer, but she tries every time. They walk her over and yes, if we get a little bit of rain or the track is a little wet, she's proven that she can handle that. So yeah, looking forward to that and looking forward to starting off writing her today, she'd be my first mount, so looking forward to that. Yeah, is there rain in the forecast today, Sheldon? There was a little bit this morning, it seems to have stopped right now, but I'm hearing it might come again a little bit later.

"Of just how challenging and unpredictable it can be to get a horse to The Kentucky Derby. And if you don't believe me, just ask trainer safi Joseph junior. Last Saturday, I'm sure he was not expecting that he would have to book a room in Louisville for Derby week. If he's going to be a 100% honest, I don't think he expected lord miles to pull off a 59 to one upset. In the wood memorial. Once again, this is a very unpredictable sport. So think about it. When highly regarded two year olds echo again in Damon's mound, we're competing as favorites in the grade three Iroquois, lord miles, hadn't even made it to the races yet. His debut didn't come until November 19th. So he was on nobody's radar. Maybe saffy Joseph junior, I don't know if he was on saffy's radar last week. I'm going to ask him that question. I'll visit with safi coming up at 9 o'clock this morning. We'll see what he has to say. If he truly was thinking he would have to make reservations for Louisville. When he sent lord miles up to the wood memorial. Another horse who had yet to make his debut when the road to The Kentucky Derby point series began on September 17th was bluegrass stakes winner tap at trice. His first start came on November 9th at aqueduct. He finished third that day. But I think all that seemed to do was just kind of tick them off and make them mad. Because he hasn't lost since, he's a perfect four for four. Owner and breeder, Mandy Pope of whisper hill farm is the co owner of tapat trice, along with Anthony Beck's gainesway stable. She's going to be with me coming up in just a few minutes at 8 15 eastern. So it's a really busy show. And then I'm going to dive into a couple of other things outside of the Derby trail for you here this morning. So here's what's coming up. So you got Mandy Pope at 8 15 just after my first commercial break. Keep the somo 8 35 saffy Joseph junior 9 o'clock. 9 20 unsung heroes presented by woodbine entertainment. I welcome sovereign award winning groom, amber Hutchinson to the program. Yeah, the sovereign awards, the equivalent to the eclipse awards here in the U.S., the sovereign awards in Canada do award a groom of the year, and this time there was two, you'll hear more about that later. But they do give us sovereign award for the groom of the year, which I think is really cool. And I would like to see the eclipse awards, add a category to recognize those unsung heroes who work on the back stretch and work tirelessly to make our game a success. Without them, we don't have a sport. So amber Hutchinson going to be my unsung hero this week after she received that eclipse or the sovereign award on Thursday night. Sheldon Russell, journeyman jockey, returned to the winner's circle on Thursday to cap off his latest comeback from injury. He's had to battle through a lot of things the past couple of years. He's going to join me coming up at 9 40 Eastern Time and he'll also talk about today's Federico tesio, in which he gets a leg up from his wife, Brittany Russell, aboard prince of Jericho, and that race offering an automatic bid to the Preakness. Win today, see you in May, is what they say. With the Federico tesio winner. To inspire triple play comes up at 10 o'clock eastern Joe Christopher going to be here to give you three races. You can keep an eye on later today. Kurt Becker stroll through racing history at ten 20 and at ten 30, we wrap it all up with I ask they answer trainer Dale Romans turf writer Tim wilkin, lots of things to talk about, including that Derby point system. Is it time to overhaul the whole thing? I'm going to ask them that question. You'll find out why as we move throughout the program here today. Is it time to overhaul the entire system, throw it all out the window, start from scratch? Going to be interesting to hear their thoughts when we get to that segment at ten 30. So a lot of things to get to, busy show. Here's the poll question before I go to break. The poll question, who's your pick to win the Lexington stakes at keeneland later today? Give you a first mission, disarm Arabian lion or other. And if you choose other comment, let me know which horse you'd think is going to win that race. Other than those top three first mission, disarm Arabian lion or other, who is your pick to win today's Lexington stakes at Keenan. Go to horse racing radio network on Facebook or at RN on Twitter to weigh in and cast your vote and I'll update those throughout the day. If you don't do social media, you can email the show. Mike at horse racing radio dot net and let me know who you think is going to win the Lexington stakes. Does this arm punch his ticket to The Kentucky Derby or somebody else? Deny him that opportunity later today. Mandy Pope comes up next, looking back on tap at price and her stellar career in this business. This is the equine forum, presented by twin spires on H, RN.

"Four career starts, including one at this one turn mile distance at Laurel, which was clearly the best race of her career at two ways to look at it as far as I'm concerned. She's just much better now than she was to start her career or she ran so well last time out that she's got to regress a little bit and go backwards. If she's 8 to 5 in here, I'm probably not interested and I'm going to take the glass half empty look. She's 5 to two or more. I'm going to take the glass half full look and say that she's just a better filly now than she was when we saw her as a two year old last year, which certainly could be the case. That last effort, though, where she dusted and allowance field by some ten links. I think is probably good enough to beat this field as well. So I'm going to try her in the beyond the wire race 8 tomorrow at Laurel. 9th and final stake on the Laurel car tomorrow is the $100,000 private terms, three year olds here going the about myelin of 16th distance, which is two turns at Laurel field of 8 going to post. Bob, I don't think any of these remind us of private terms yet, but we've got some pretty good runners in this field and it's a real interesting handicapping puzzle mainly because how great is Nate shows up in this race. How great is Nate actually was supposed to run in the grade three Gotham two weeks ago, but stumbled so bad at the start and unseated jockey JD Acosta that it was basically a non effort and he's wheeled back in this race back at Laurel. Yeah, no, he's definitely looks like a live contender in here if he runs back to any of his bitter he was four for four is a two year old so pretty exciting horse and how frustrating must that be to ship a horse up to aqueduct and basically have immediately lose the jock. That must have been a frustrating day. We'll see if he can make amends here. I like this is the biggest three year old race of the week and you mentioned it's quite weak for the three year olds. This is a race that basically starts off the series for local horses you get one or two of them in the Preakness. We'll see if any of them are that outstanding. I think it's kind of interesting that Brittany Russell and her husband Sheldon add the blinkers to the three horse circling the drain, circling the drains of three year old gelding by West Coast. He's never run a bad race, and he ran a really mighty race last time winning at a very short price going that the course and distance here at Laurel mile to 16th. I think he can step up further. I guess they think that the blinkers might actually eke a little bit more improvement out of them. If it does work, he's got a good post going up model 16th year, very short run into the turn. I like the three circling the drain. Yeah, you and I are on the same horse here, and we're both hoping we can get 6 to one. And I can say it from reading the past performances of previous weekends takes previews when I agree with you or I agree with Dave or you agree with Dave. The morning line never we never seem to get the price that we think we're going to get on the source. So 6 to one on circling the drain, I'm guessing that means that he's going to be a little bit lower than that, but for every reason that you said, I like him as well in the private terms. Speaking of private terms bob, I alluded to the fact that none of these horses quite yet remind us of a private terms. Do you remember private terms from the late 80s? Yeah, I remember a private terms not like the back of my hand, but I certainly remember the name and I definitely watched him race. I believe he won the first 7 starts of his career and he was he was one of the favorites for the 1988 Kentucky Derby. I think he won the wood memorial and the Gotham and he may have won the Federico tesio, which of course is a graded stakes race at pimlico back then before The Kentucky Derby. And then he was really not a factor in the Derby and he did win races later in his career the biggest one being the mass cap, but mostly some kind of nondescript races around the mid Atlantic region. He was kind of an all or nothing horse. I think he retired with 12 wins from 17 starts, but he never was second or third. Charles had rehabbed him and I believe kento somo wrote him part of the time. He was definitely owned by claiborne. He was definitely a force and then of course he came back at four one the mass cap, which was a big race then, the never bend in the Damascus, so he got, even though he didn't have a good classic campaign, he basically put it back together at four improve what a good horse he is. It's nice that he's saluted with his stakes race, which is usually a very good competitive race every year. Yeah, and it looks like another edition that's very competitive tomorrow race 9 on the Laurel park card. All right, we're going to take our final time out. When we come back, we've got a Saturday stake at San Anita, a couple of Sunday stakes to look at. Listening to the weekend takes preview on the horse racing radio network. "Of the miracle wood coffee with Chris coming away with the win that afternoon and he will try to get the win once again tomorrow at Laurel in the private terms one of 5 stakes on their card tomorrow afternoon. Welcome back to the weekend stakes preview here on HR and Bobby Newman with bob nastanovich. Let's get back to that Laurel park card bob race 6 tomorrow at Laurel as the $75,000 not for love, the Maryland bread or sired four year olds and up, sprinting 6 furlongs on their main track. We've got a field of ten going to post and we've got another 8 to 5 shot on the morning line in eastern bay. 8 to 5 deservedly so eastern bay is 19 for 54 lifetime, 12 or 29 at 7 furlongs. He's won 13 times at Laurel. This is the definitive specialist. He's a 9 year old, and if anything he seems better at 9 than he did at 7 and 8, judging by his form, in fact, he's so good that he beat open company in the general George here in February 18th, and then ran right back and trainer Norman cash is keeping him really busy, sent him to aqueduct for the grade three Tom fool and he ran a very respectable race beaten two legs into fourth. This is definitely his ballpark in his race to win as it's almost like the race exists for him wonderful worse eastern bait. I just can't imagine him getting beaten a spot. All right, so we're taking a little bit of a different look on this race eastern bay, certainly coming out of the best two races and probably the one to beat if he runs his best races. I'm not a 100% sure we're going to see that race tomorrow. I think his last race where he finished only two lengths behind Lil Vic in the grade three Tom fool was a big effort. I don't know if we're going to get that big effort again off what is just two weeks off since that race. So I'm going to go with a little bit of a price in number ten breezy gust for hose away arce. He's the trainer and you former jockey host way RC, by the way. Dexter haddock abort breezy gust who has been doing his damage down at parks of late, finishing first or second in each of his last three starts, albeit against offer competition than what he's going to see tomorrow, but I think speed figure wise, he's right there with these. I like the outside post, and he looks like a horse who's in good form right now. He's been first or second, 15 of his 29 career starts and I don't think he's ever been better than he is right now. So maybe this is the time breezy gust can get the job done in the not for love. Race 7 tomorrow at Laurel is the Harrison E Johnson memorial, one of 5 stakes on the card. Bob, how did you see this one? Yeah, it's nice to see him jump into open company here. I mean, the Maryland breads are apparently there's some very talented ones, but this race has a nice wide open look with a lot of very good older horses. I landed on a horse called Nimitz class. He's also a short price here trained by Bruce cap Kravitz having good meat, JV and Toledo has been riding extremely well on the circuit for years. Just this horse seems to be going from strength to strength at the moment. He's 7 for 13 lifetime, appears to like a route of ground more than a sprint and this one turned mile just seems kind of ideal even though he's never tried it. He just he's in great form and he's very difficult for me to oppose this very talented four year old son of munnings who looks like he might be going places. All right, so Nimitz class for bob in this race. I thought it was a tough race, by the way, as I mentioned, the Harrison need Johnson memorial. It's a $100,000 purse, and it is a one turn mile. 9 to 5 the morning line on Nimitz class. I went just to hear the inside of that with our nation on parade who was second to Nimitz class last time out. Nimitz class was 9 to 5 that day on an Asian on parade was 5 to two, and they ran one two and Nimitz class was clearly better that afternoon. I just happened to think that now our nation on parade has some racism his past performances, more good races in his past performances. I should say the Nimitz class does limits class, maybe just better right now. He's won 7 of his 13 starts in his last two have been very, very good, but overall, I trust our nation on parade a little bit more and he's going to be a little bit of a better price. So I'm going to try him in the Harrison E Johnson memorial. Moving ahead to race 8, the beyond the wire $100,000 on the line for the three year old Phillies going the one turn mile. Field of 7 going to post in this race bob and the two to one choice on the line. Number three, lady Lowry. Interesting stories in this race pretty interesting group of three year old Philly, some very well bred ones, the 7 horses are three to one in here. In the morning line, Cairo sugar has won two in a row at aqueduct. She's a very good New York bread. She's by a Cairo prince out of the fantastic Frank stronach owned who are spun sugar who is a multiple grade one stakes winner and kind of interesting when you see a horse that's this really bred to sell for only $6000, so she must have some sort of confirmation fault or something, but it hasn't stopped her becoming a very good race horse. She's in fantastic form right now. She's got good speed, another interesting entrant is the horse you mentioned the three lady Lowry. I'm gonna pick her. She's a three year old Philly by mudding. It's kind of amazing to me that mornings has gotten a $100,000 stud fee but he deserves that he's been a fantastic stallion. This is a wind star home bred trained by Elliot Walden's son William, a new trainer he's at the belief 31 32 years old. She's made two starts at turfway on the synth. Came from way back, really showed an impressive turn of foot and her first try and then dust today a similar field going 6 and a half. It's going to be difficult for her to tackle new surface. The main thing and she's stretching out from 6 and a half to a mile, but the way she runs, I think, that everything will fall into place for and I think she might be just too talented for this bunch. All right, and she's got revolutionary on the damn side, which certainly entitles her to go a little bit further than the 6 and a half furlongs where she's raised her last two. I went to the rail number one pharaoh's baby gile for Brittany Russell and jebby and delito or heavy on Toledo.

"Course, like many of the horses in the top 30 right now, they see a bunch or trained by Todd pletcher and a bunch of trained by Brad Cox. It'll be interesting to see when things sort of shuffle out here and we get down to the top 2022 horses, you know, basically how many trainers are even represented these days. It's kind of interesting, is Tim yak teen the only recipient of a top top above effort three roads or any other trainers. I mean, of the top Bob Baffert for three year olds, yes. But there have been other three year olds that are certainly good horses, but maybe not in the Arabian night kind of realm that have or hejazi kind of is highly regarded as them that have gone other places. Brittany Russell, I know, got one. I think Brendan Walsh got one. Steve asimus and had a horse named Harlow cap that I think ran in the risen star and was not much of a factor that day. So there are other trainers that have gotten them. It's interesting to note, though, with yak teen getting all this kind of notice for being, listen, he's not a program trainer for Bob Baffert. That's unfair to say that, but he's a temporary trainer. He's a former assistant, a former longtime assistant. And as is Owen hardy, so I think he's and of course he's remained in Southern California unlike hardy, and yeah, so I think that, you know, and again, I don't know this type of thing officially, but I imagine there's some communication going on between, I'm sure, probably acting talks to the connections, whether it's Jimmy Barnes or baffert on a frequent basis. I don't know what the legalities are in regards to that. I, to somebody sent me an article suggesting that Arabian night was still an wasn't even yet in the acting stable. I can't prove that, but anyways, it's sort of interesting as this campaign takes shape. There's a lot of beautifully bred horses. One sire name that shows up constantly in addition to names like into mischief and candy ride, which you'd expect is the sophomore style in good magic who obviously is off to a fantastic start, so you see some trainers on the list like Mandela and ma and John sheriffs is right now his curlin colt skinner's 24th. So things will shake shake out here as you mentioned. There's a lot of massive racists coming out up and sometimes second seconds and thirds are good enough. So I think you expect a lot of these horses to have between one and three starts. What did you mention was the plan going forward for forte. He's a Florida Derby contender and tappet tray seems like a bluegrass horse as far as you can tell. Yeah, that's what Todd pletcher has said in recent weeks. And it was funny because originally, you know, even as going up to the fountain of youth, they were talking about forte possibly going to the bluegrass after a running in the fountain of youth because they know he loves keenland so much, but I guess they decide, listen, there's no reason to take him away from here. He's doing a well here in South Florida. We know he likes it here at Gulfstream. We're going to keep him for the Florida Derby. We're going to send tap at price to the bluegrass and see how he does. We all would know he can overcome adversity. We already know he can ship and win. We'll see how he does getting on the plane and going to keeneland for the first time. But I thought what was interesting is that getting back to Tim yak teen. And I'm probably guilty of this myself for a kind of whether I meant to do it or not. Kind of making it lessening his role with some of these horses. He's training these horses. Now, you know, unlike last year where Bob Baffert was not was suspended for 60 days from San Anita and not allowed anywhere and all of his horses had to go different places. Now he's not suspended. I mean, technically, bob could be walking over to Tim yak teens barn to see his horses and talk to Tim about his horses. But what's funny about this is Timmy acting is a darn good three year old himself in practical move, a horse that's been his the entire time and he looked phenomenal winning the San Felipe in his most recent start. And if he runs anywhere like that in the Santa Anita Derby, or continues to improve, he's going to win that race too. None. Like you said, you know, and he's pretty exciting son of practical joke. You know, compact but a very good-looking horse and yeah, that is one thing that needs to be repeated is that I think these days when people see the name Tim yak teen sort of very unfairly to him, they think, oh, he's just the pinch hitter for Bob Baffert for a few weeks. So yeah, no, it's very important here. Number two on the list right now is 60 points to get in The Kentucky Derby, which probably it might be good enough if he doesn't even race again, but yeah, the sanity to Derby looks like a pretty obvious target for practical move. And he's a pretty exciting coat with the right profile and like you said, he's been with Tim yak teen from the start and that needs to be noted. You're somebody who I'm not sure our listeners realize this. You've been involved in the game not only as a fan and playing the game, but you've worked at racetracks around racetracks around horses for many, many years. And including recently, I Prairie Meadows a few years ago where you not only charted the races for equibase, but you were a morning line maker. For a time. So getting back to your odds making days. If I were to tell you you have two choices, you can have all pletcher and Cox three year olds

"Miranda, right. All right, so Miranda writes his number 8, 8 to one on the line. Appreciate the call. Bobby, thanks very much. Miranda writes, took 5 starts to finally get his maiden win and came back with a nice thirst place finished last time out in an allowance race and he's really never run a bad race thus far in his career James. Speed figure wise, he certainly looks like a horse that has a chance. Yeah, that's right. His number is definitely fed and he's a horse that looks like he's coming on. Definitely, you know, and it's one thing about that but tackle it. There is a little bit of speed in lining up for that race. You know, cook at a good setup. I mean, Gilmore's three to one on the morning line. I'm pretty sure are pretty confident he's going to be a lot less than that, Bobby. So he's the horse to beat, but Miranda writes is a horse that is up and coming and we've seen a lot of horses run well either in their first or second starts so far this winter into the spring in these three year old steaks. So yeah, I mean, good luck, Bobby with Miranda rights. Yeah, I would say that if that's the horse you like, there's no reason to get off of him and he's the right price and really looks like he's about as good as most of the others in this field, if not everyone else in the field, just whether or not it gets the right trip under jockey Rafael Hernandez, who certainly is capable at giving horses very, very good rides. Miranda writes interesting runner in the John battaglia memorial. Let's get one more call in before the break Jack in Los Angeles. You've got Bobby and James on the brisket dot com call in show. Hey, Bobby, hey, James. How are you guys? Hey, Jackie. How are you? I'm good. Thank you. I get a question about these back for three year olds. Don't you think that they backer would be coaching these other trainers on how to train the horse up to the race? How to train after the race. I know it hadn't worked out too successfully in recent recent years, but do you think there's some coaching by baffert to the other trainers? Well, first of all, I appreciate the call Jack, and that is a damn good question. And it's a good, it's a good observation or a good inquiry, I should say from Jack because different from last year where bob was not even allowed on the grounds at San Anita for two months. He's got he's still there. These horses that have remained in Southern California are still not far from him. He theoretically could see them every day. They can't be in his shed row. And I'm guessing that his employees can't be the ones who are walking them colder hot or exercising them in the mornings, but to answer Jack's question, I think, yes, there's no reason that he can't be on the phone saying what kind of regimen he would use for these horses. I mean, that obviously depends a lot on the ownership and what these other trainers have to say about it. I think that's a great point about last year. I mean, he was banned from like talking to Tim yak teen or anybody on the track. He was banned from the ground. So he couldn't. But he could stay in right at the rail next to Timmy IT when these horses are training out there in the morning. And he's definitely all these sources have been transferred. I have racing managers that are in like real close contact about baffert, baffert about other horses that they have with them currently that they didn't have last year. So it's a completely different situation. He's not supposed to be orchestrating the training, but to say that, but there's not a no contact order. So he could definitely talk to these people that have taken over his horses. Yeah, it's an interesting question. And I think if the question was asked of the current trainers, the former trainer or the owners, I'm not sure if I would believe exactly the answer they were giving you anyway. Because I thought it was I'll just let me just say, I thought it was fascinating. I saw Ron flatter, he had a piece, you know, that he broke it down foston, cave rock, and speedboat beach, all stayed with baffert, all of them are not running in the Derby. It's even faustin who I thought had a shot. Yak teen did get Arabian night and then all the other ones he got, the four of them are running in the San Felipe and then the one in the Gotham. So I believe that those are the 6 he got Brendan Walsh, got one, Brittany Russell, Steve asimus and maybe one other person and so he transferred about a non or ten horses that looks like. I think it would have been a hilarious, if he just sent them all to dick dutro. Who is now able to get his training license back after the ten year ban. All right, we're going to take our first break. When we come back, phone lines are open. Give us a call 888-966-4776 is the number. This is the bris net dot com call in show on HR RN.

"Show here on HR and I'm Bobby Newman along with James Scully for your hour, HR and nation to call in and talk about whatever you'd like in the world of thoroughbred racing, the number to get in is 888-966-4776. That's triple 8, 9 6 6 hr, James, we had a real big race on The Kentucky Derby road last weekend. We've got four of them coming up this Saturday. This is your biggest weekend so far this year for Kentucky Derby contenders. Like you said, four qualifiers, two real big races, the year in and year out, the founding youth and Gulfstream park in the San Felipe at San Anita. But the Gotham at aqueduct in the John battaglia of memorial at turfway park both got like full fields and both have attracted shippers from elsewhere and it looked like exciting additions to those races. So a lot of good action for three year old Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown hopefuls going on this Saturday, Bobby. And all four races I believe have former Bob Baffert runners in them. Does the fountain of youth have a former Bob Baffert runner in the race? No, no, that's the only one. That's the only one that does it. Yeah, that's right. You've got Brandon Walsh's has now housed Gilmore and of course Timmy IT. He's got four in the San Felipe and he's got Carmel road and the Gotham and then Brittany Russell has forked Warren or somebody also in the Gotham. So she has a former trainee in that race too. All right, once again, the phone lines are open if you'd like to call in and talk about any of those races or any of the other big races coming up around the country they've got monster stakes cards at both Gulfstream and San Anita this Saturday and three races on the aqueduct card, nice racing at turfway park as well. But before we get to next weekend's racing, let's talk about what we saw last weekend, both with the Saudi cup and with the rebel stakes. We'll start with the $20 million Saudi cup where taba kind of late an egg as the heavy favorite in the American pools. I think was the de facto best runner in America going in and logical favored in the race, but he really didn't show up and had nothing left down the lane as stablemate country grammar put in a late run, but it was too late to catch the Japanese runner panthalassa and Japan has shown it again. They were just dominant. I think running first, third, fourth, and 5th in the world's biggest purse race. Yeah, huge day for the Japanese for sure in the Saudi cup and under card stakes as well. And you know, I just hope, you know, I'd love to see more Japanese come this year to the breeders cup. You know, we had two winners two years ago at del mar last fall of Keenan. I believe there was only one Japanese runner. So, you know, they're just like, I mean, I think they're in the early stages of really becoming a force like trying to become a force like internationally. And they've had back to back big years in the Saudi cup card. As far as country grammar goes, I mean, just like what a big effort Bobby and defeat. He ran real big last year as well. One turn mile in 8th is this too short for him, but that race really figures to set him up for his title defense in the Dubai World Cup. And tava, that was. I mean, that was just totally unexpected. He came under a ride going in the far turn and had nothing. He can still regroup stateside for Bob Baffert, but yeah, I just, I didn't see that coming at all. A little bit of a disappointing day. Maybe not money wise, but win wise for the U.S. based horses. They don't get a job. Job done in the big race, the Saudi cup late running second from country grammar, having a meltdown runs a huge race in the Saudi Derby, but ends up a no shy of winning that race, Casa creed, a huge late run in the turf sprint, only to come up second best. In the dirt sprint though, U.S. still pretty tough. Elite power and gunite strongly won two in that race. Yeah, I mean, I ran great. I just thought heck he ran into a beast. I mean, elite power made it stay debut in the vossberg stakes in October. And he won that race, and then he ran better in the breeders cup sprint, what he wanted akin. And he took a step forward in my eyes. I thought that was outstanding notorious, wasn't worried about ground loss at all. And when he asked him in the stretch, boy, he had a serious turn of foot to win going away. So that really bodes well for him going forward in 2023. Yeah, I actually thought gun I'd had a big chance of beating him going into the race, but a leaf power was just much better than a gun I ran well just second best to elite power in that Riyadh dirt sprint. The biggest race stateside, of course, was the grade $2 million rebel stakes where confidence gain got the job done on a sloppy seal track under James Brown, Graham for trainer Keith the somo at big price, red route one, a big long shot from the back of the pack, ran second, and it was a rare three year old big race this year where Brad Cox had runners that looked like they were major players going in and they just didn't run that well. No, and verifying my thought was in position and upper stretch and it really sort of came up empty. It was like three lengths behind reincarnated fourth and giant mischief made a bit into contention on the far turn and then have much left in the stretch finishing 6. I'm verifying. I could give him a little bit of a slack for that. I mean, I still think he could come on this year for Brad Cox. A little worried about longer distances for a giant mischief. But I've died confidence game has, you know, he won twice last year, Bobby, but none of it is like two year olds, including ones at Churchill of a rocket can and allowance. But none of those races were fast speed wise. I think he's moved forward big time for Keith the sormo this year. I thought his third in the lecomte was better than it looked because he chased a real wicked second quarter and wound up like, you know, several months clear of dennington who came back and wanted a nice allowance on the risen our undercard. And then he took another step forward, really when James Graham asked him on the far turn, he moved right into position and just kept accelerating into the stretch and opened up a clear lead and killed everybody safe.

"I am this race has a grand love coming back. She set the pace in all three of her starts 6 in the British cup juvenile Phil, he's three to one morning line favorite. But I look at this race with tau head to her inside a FrontRunner just effortlessly elegant. I think has something going for norm Cassie and comes off a big wire to wire win and you have some others in there as well on the outside that have some speed. It's going to set up for a closer. The local horse and that fits that Bill is number 7 wet pain and I'm not dismissing her. But I think these races in New York that gambling girl is coming out of are better races. I think she's been facing better horses. I think a cult is a huge like three year old Philly for Chad Brown off of that win in that basan. She's I think she's going to be like the horse to beat in her upcoming prep races. And I look, I think gambling girl even in that race two back in the demoiselle. I think Julia shining and affirmative lady both are good Philly's as well that could come on. So I like her chances from off the pace. I don't know if I'll get 12 to one with irad Ortiz, but I like her shipping in for Todd poetry. I think she's going to get the right setup and come running from on the far turn and into the stretch. So I'll go with number four gambling girls, my pick, Bobby, and the honeybee. All right, so race 11 on the Saturday card at Oakland ten. I'm sorry, race ten is James best play of the weekend. Number four gambling girl 12 to one on the morning line in the grade three, $300,000 honey bee, a points qualifier on the road to this year's Kentucky oaks gambling girl coming out of some New York races. This will be your first time racing outside the state of New York, but she rarely in fact she's never run a bad race in her career, even when she's not in the money, she's fourth and really not that far back. And what James is thinking is coming out of some good races behind a cult and Julia shiny. You know, Julia, it's interesting. You say, all right, she ran third, she was beaten a length by Julia shining in grade two race. I think the jury's still out on Julia's shiny. I know she's got a big reputation that she didn't really have nothing to do with her racing. You know, she was expected to be the next coming of whatever just because the sister to mala fat. And she looked good winning her first two starts. I thought she was just okay. The other day out at out of Tampa Bay downs a week and a half ago or so. But listen, gambling girl might be a better Philly than Julia shine, even though she didn't beat her that day. She might just be improving at the right time and you're getting a big price, my friend, 12 to one on an irad Ortiz Todd pletcher combination. Yeah, and you're right, Julia shining still has to run faster from a speed figure perspective, but, you know, you could say, hey, wonder wheel, you know, championship or Philly, she's second in that race. So both horses get beat by a long shot that goes wire a wire and sometimes those races, you know, that they could just move forward off of them. They might not be like, we'll see if the winner of that comes back and backs it up. And I wouldn't give up on Julia Shawnee just off of that sort of third where she hung late in a stretch. All right, we're going to take our final break, but before we do, I'm going to ask you a tough question, James, and I'll give you a few minutes to think about this. I asked this question at the end of our previous show on the network. So we're now at the point where on Tuesday, February 28th is the deadline for horses that are trained by Bob Baffert to be moved to other trainers to be in their barns or be in their names going forward if they want to earn oaks or Derby points or possibly even run in the Kentucky oaks or Kentucky Derby this year. Bob Baffert, I think we would all agree whether you like him or not. He certainly one of the best trainers out there percentage wise, three year olds, everything he does. His horses run very, very well. Is there a point where you start looking negatively at horses who were Bob Baffert sources, but are now in another barn. And I'm not going to pick any one trainer because he's sending horses to several different trainers this year. He's got several with the acting. We already saw one with Steve asthma in last week. He's going to have one with Brendan Walsh, Brittany Russell, I think, is getting horses. There may be a few others out there that we don't know yet. Most of these trainers, I would say you would think would not be as strong with three year olds as Bob Baffert is certainly none of them seem like they'd be better than baffert with the three year olds. Maybe as strong, maybe not as strong. At one point do you, if you do, do you look negatively upon these horses who used to be in Bob Baffert's care, but maybe for a month or two are in somebody else's barn. Something to think about. We're going to take our final break. This is the brisket dot com call in show on HR RN.

You can't do that much. You know five day a week six hours plus day. The not every minute. I do fifteen hours of radio every every week and and tina will say to me. You know when she comes home from school. How was the show. Say well you know not. Every one of them is going to be an award winner and my case none of them have ever been an award winner so by the dodger but gully game by itself and you never felt like what you get you get not at all not at all. The summer yesterday was yesterday. Said i got a chance to see you and The last time you hear. Billy joel is the Sandblast race went official I felt the way i did when del mar was closing down the summer. The season was ending. When i was a kid as a kid growing up some are starting till down and as soon as it was time to go back to school it was only it was partially. 'cause you're going back to school but also because how much i loved del mar is a kid. That's how much faction. I've grown to have four saratoga over the last three summers and this year From day one regardless of what happened in any of the races and we said this day one. We have ten races. Today you'll see the schuylerville you'll see the turf sprint. The opening day traditional features but tomorrow's headline is already been written. The fans are back at their tokyo. And what that was like last year as fortunate as we work to work so many of my friends that are in sports television. That didn't have a chance to work. During the pandemic adding anxiety to an already anxious situation horse racing continued. We got to do our jobs. And how fortunate we were This massive ecosystem. That horse racing was able to continue throughout the pandemic. but wasn't it was not the same by any means. We've stressed that and seeing the fans back and i can't tell you how many i had a chance to interact with. It said you know thanks for last summer we were able to escape everything that was happening because by getting to watch the racist everyday. Thank you and my response. Thank you for being here. Thank you for being back. You have no idea how much we miss them. Fat with the overwhelming thing. The overriding theme that on saturday that first saturday that cruiser malice that race when saratoga just came alive in that stretch drive it was electric. It was something we hadn't felt in two years and something that you had a new sense of appreciation for because we experienced it without it last year That's what this summer that was. This was all about and Again there's certain way tracks across the country on day to day basis. They go on without a lot of people necessarily being there. There's other tracks where it's different that you're accustomed to seeing that big crowd and having that back saratoga made this an extraordinarily special special summer. And when you talk about those confrontations it was remarkable. How often particularly you just go back to travers day a week ago saturday it. How often did we have these gripping stretch tools including you know incl- including the silence silence of of the of the the e every race. And no sooner had you kind of come down and watch the replay a couple of times you turn around and here came another one. It it was it was just tremendous and the stars came out. I brought up And i don't know if this resonates has much with everybody but one of the things. That's remarkable every summer here is not just here. This is probably true at del mar as well. I don't have. I do have the list but i haven't gone through with the same way but you look at the list of steak winners and okay. The assamese steve. Asmussen and chad brown and todd pletcher. Bill burr Brad cox mike maker. So wesley ward and cassie they they dominate. However jim jim bond norm rob actress. Liz merriman kerry brianna jackson. Neil pessene joe. Sharp the duero. Cherie defoe georgia bro brittany russell michelle ge giulio or first grade carlos martin bruce brown bob dunham who hot walked round table Faust brett brinkman on on saturday. We had a wonderful conversation. Bobby bado how's that for a list of you know medium small size barnes and horseman who won stakes at saratoga. This summer had a little bit of everything.
