Renewables could help Caribbean become more hurricane-resilient
"I'm Dr Anthony Lahser wits, and this is climate connections. When hurricane strike the Caribbean entire highlands are sometimes left without power. That's because there's usually just one power plant and one electricity grid pilot. So if that one grid goes down, the entire island can go dark for days weeks or even months. caitlyn bunkers with a nonprofit rocky mountain institute. She's Co author of a study that shows that one way to minimize this risk is to add renewables that are connected to micro grids. These systems can operate independently from the larger grid bunker. Says that after hurricanes. And Maria. We identified some examples in places like the British Virgin Islands. The Turkey silence where those installations came through the storms themselves. Okay and we're able to be providing power at least locally to the nearby buildings and infrastructure that needed power more quickly than the remainder of the grid, which took a bit longer to be able to restore and reconnect. Bunker. Says adding solar for example, would not only help islands recover after hurricanes it would also create new job opportunities. So renewable and decentralized energy can both provide jobs and strengthen the resiliency of the Caribbean.

Yo ho and a bottle of Rum
"Welcome to kiss myths and mysteries. I'm your host Kit Crumb. Today we talk about the superstitions pirates although there were intelligent pirates educated pirates slight Gracia Molly who spoke Gaelic and Latin fluently. There was captain kid who owned huge amounts of property in New York and there was blackbeard former teacher. But there were superstitions like cats were thought to carry a gale in their tail. So black cat frolicking on the deck was assigned. Gail was imminent to drown was never mentioned at sea. Sailors thought it was funeral. Fight to see so most never learned to swim. Most pirates didn't know how to swim. Earrings will pirates were golden. They really did. Because they were fashionable but also in the belief that they gave them better iside protected them from Trimdon. Pirates often wore feathers in their hats. For superstitious reasons they were thought to protect sailors from shipwrecks especially the feathers of the wren slaughtered on New Year's Day which held its power. For a year this belief led to the virtual extinction of Rennes on the Isle of Man. Flowers were discouraged on board because they were associated with funeral. Wreaths of Dead Man Bellow Pirate. Now here's one about Friday. Friday was the unlucky. Stay to set sail as it was the day Christ was crucified. In the day Eve tempted Adam. Grand a garden of Eden. British navy attempted to eliminate superstition by commissioning the HMS Friday which had its Keel laid on Friday is crew selected on a Friday and the captain's name was Jim Friday. It set sail on a Friday and was never seen again. It was also bad luck to luxur word after you had shoved off to see a fast. Swimming Porpoise was good luck to kill one. Dad Luck repairing flags on the quarter deck was sure. Bring bad luck. You never stepped on the ship with your left foot always with the ride. Seagulls were believed to carry the souls of drown men so it was bad. Luck to shoot and sailors never whistle. They believed that the wind could be summoned by whistling softly. After first sticking a knife in the mask whistling on the deck while the when was already blown was stocked to bring a gale women on. Boorda's ship were considered unlucky. "Should go out and do your research. And I'm going to leave a link in the show notes of this podcast to a site that essentially categorizes and compares different VPN services. The site is called that one privacy site and you can find it at that one privacy site dot net. That's that one privacy site dot net so I do recommend that you go there. Take a look at the different. Vpn's as this. I believe this hundreds of them but they really do a deep dive into which ones are the best and why and the you can compare and contrast but in terms of the ones I recommend well the first one is one called gnawed. Vpn So I use gnawed VPN being used for about six months. Now it's good. I'm satisfied with the service that based in Panama so the outside of the kind of Western jurisdiction they allow you to secure up to six devices seeking connect. You know three computers and three small phones if you like. It's a low price so I signed up to a three year deal so the have a really good deal on. If you sign up for three years they do have a woman can do a trial. And the allow you to pay with crypto currency as well Which is what I did so I use. Vpn does have a good reviews around the interwebs as well. The talk a lot about privacy on their blog as well give it a lot of advice in how to protect your privacy so do check them out but there's also one called Proton VPN and so if you've heard of mill it's the same company that will propel mail as well so I use proto mill as my email service provider. And they are very good with privacy. The hub privacy at the heart of everything that they do the Swiss bist best in Switzerland Which has excellent Privacy Laws? It's generally more pricier. Vpn The definitely a high Quality type premium product and. They have different plans so depending on what your needs are but the prices can get fairly expensive for a VPN but I do believe with Proton VPN. You are getting a really good service and your privacy will be protected so another one again. I haven't used this woman but I've heard good things about it. It's called shock surf. Shark all one word the best in the British Virgin Islands and they allow you to have unlimited devices so you can literally connected as many devices to the VPN as he like again. You can pay with Crypto so you can be completely anonymous and they have good plans as well so I think that best plan is like a two year plan and I think you get like eighty percent discount if you sign up to the two year plan so that's three recommendations. I make but as a mentioned always do your own research always go out and kind of find out for yourself so how much a VPN's well it really depends on how long you sign up to us. One for usually the the long term deals. They're often the best. But even if you want to try a VPN Yukon and you compare for a month so you don't have to sign up for like a year or two year or three year but you will get better deals by doing that but if you just WanNa test one out then you can an for a month old probably cost you about ten pounds about twelve. Us dollars but if you're looking for something long term Then obviously you're going to get a better deal. Sought the time of this podcast gnawed. Vpn currently has a three year deal which works out at about two point seventy per month. That's about three dollars. A month surf shock again. Who I mentioned earlier. They currently have a deal to your deal that works out at around one pound sixty two dollars per month. So that's a good deal at the moment so again it really depends proton. Vpn YOU'RE GONNA pay more for that but then you've got the backing of company like Proton who makes brilliant privacy products and the very much privacy oriented and there a high quality company. But you just GonNa pay offer so it really depends on what your needs are what your budget is how long you want. Vpn Four and so on so finely. Should you use a free? Vpn there are different services out that who offering a free VPN so you don't even have to pay earth well like most things in life. Nothing is free ham and you do pay for in different ways if you genuinely care about privacy then you should use a pair for VPN. The free paeans often keep logs of all your browsing data so much. Isp which let your mobile phone provider. They're essentially taking your Internet browsing habits and tracking it and selling it onto advertisers which could be directed back to you so in answer should use a free free. Vpn Nor it's not worth it in a generally defeats the object of why you're using a VPN in the first place so that's VPN's in a nutshell. I've been using mind for about six or seven months. I'll continue to use one because it's peace of mind. It gives me peace of mind when I'm browsing obviously Vesey as we've seen in recent years we're living increasingly in a surveillance type staff particularly when it comes to online. So if you want to protect your privacy as much as possible then you'll definitely do no harm by starting with a VPN. So that's me. Stay Davies from St. Debbie's DOT com..

"Very sophisticated ways of moving bodies got trough in the British Virgin Islands it's not clear if anyone's going to get to those I I discovered through a source inside one of the companies have not for him and he also had a very sort of on the ground ways of hiding body like literally converting money into gold you can gold bars and very and I couldn't find anyone of any part of the story that didn't believe the caller has money out there I mean he he claims allowed one probably stole it from me I don't have any money left but I think that's not really believable from the council drained of millions of dollars after he was arrested probably by people who were associated with them nobody really knows there's a lot of history around it but I think the very safe assumption would be if he if and when he gets out you've got money waiting for him yes he's tough guys around him your run of the mill kind of tough guys because he needs protection here and there a protection for the loot and then as you mentioned earlier he hooks up with a variety of mercenary types the real deal these are real guys who start doing a increasingly hostile and violent things also at his whim right yeah that's right I mean a lot of these guys had served in the military and then add I've got now and then have service security contractors during the wars in Iraq Afghanistan and windows ground out in particular or they just got you know it up with that with working not those kind of ships this work with available one is all sorts of work for your country is all in the world starting ships and executive protection you know that in all corners of the world you can find these guys doing the type of work and I think a lot of them they were just hold Hey there's a rich guy in the Philippines he pays well you go on crazy adventures and it's not particularly dangerous and it's really the work and that's how they got into it and then the mission got harder more more dangerous war they became more violent more and more of them and some of them you know we're willing to go all the way down the road from the work I mean I talk to people who they they figured out what was going on and they quit no excuse military guys he said yeah I would I would down for some for some gray area working a little gold or whatever fine but when they came back and said you know we're breaking people singer of no I would that's not for me and so there was a range of people involved in it but it's certainly the ones that made it all the way to the end those were the heavy hitters willing to do anything we're going to go to a break in about two minutes I want to talk about corruption a little bit because at one point in the book I think you said he was paying fifty thousand dollars a month to Philippine Filipino a policeman and officials just to to watch his back or keep them off his back I imagine he paid a lot more around the world and that yeah I mean that's a that's a probably very low and the aspen inst and that's more like he had a retainer going with some people just to make sure that he got information if anyone was looking into I mean he he had an arm ship off because the result being that was stopped and really nobody was ever prosecuted for one chip CAP was prosecuted for it and you know she only bought up the judge nobody wanted to touch him in the Philippines including high high level government officials that he was paying high officials in the police and so yeah there and other places he wanted to be able to operate freely and we can get into it more but the place you want to do that mostly I was small yeah will you try to go in there and try to operate freely in back with a lot of pride involved in an operation Erica yes certainly he was someone who believe that money could solve those problems in certain parts of the world and he was not hesitant to spend his fortune to make sure that he was protecting I'm of course as you detail in the book he gets involved in the arms trade he gets involved so he is making a ton of money from a semi seeming legitimate internet pharmacy business and any moves into illicit drugs and into that world and I think it's largely well I'll ask you in the next segment to sort of describe how the process went but it seemed like it was more of a barter system he needed it starts out as something like a laundering away to launder money by trading this for that and then he ends up doing business with the government of North Korea which is creating one of the world's I guess the finest strains of methamphetamine at least back then we're gonna get into that story with my guest Evan rat laugh talking about his book the mastermind a write off this war words even on this is a song perfect for this topic tonight lawyers guns and money will be right back the most powerful names and talk or heard right here on talk radio six eighty W. "And if you're just joining us, my guess is journalist Oliver below he's the author of the new book money land about how crooks and kleptocrats hide their money and laundrette through a secret of global system. So in writing about the secret of global system of shell companies, it cetera you write about how some jurisdictions like actually create laws that are favorable for shell companies and other ways of hiding money. Can you give us an example of that? Yes. I mean, this happens all over the world. One example that I like writing about is is the island of Nevis, which is a little island in the Caribbean. It's Paul country kitchen Nevis, one of the reasons I like writing about it is so lovely. It's a very it's a small volcano, absolutely gorgeous. Love your place to go on holiday, but also a place that posses laws as they they told me, and it passes laws specifically to try to track the business of the wealthy and unscrupulous these Lewis written for it by by American lawyers who who sort of essentially, right, the noise, and then and then facts than down their Email them probably down there, and then that passed by the local parliament, and then they're used by these US lawyers on behalf of that climbs, but Victor Yanukovych he used Nevis to disguise some of his property. Lots of big. A US fraudsters. You know? People have run big complicated financial crime in the US of hidden involvement behind Nevis. But essentially, the jurisdiction doesn't have the expertise it self to right. It's laws so outsources, and it gets US lowest the lowest forests, and then it just passes them. But again, this is something not unique to the Caribbean. This happens in within the US itself. The trust business is very closely involved in writing Lewis for South Dakota, for example. I mean, it happens in some of the UK tax havens US lawyers wrote knows help right Lewis for British Virgin Islands. So it's a very kind of collaborative process. You have no one side who want laws that say certain thing. So they find jurisdiction to help pass. Once Louis have been passed everyone gets to make money out to them. Yeah. It's it's it's very well organized. So if you're a jurisdiction that has lost favorable to hiding money. He can't exactly like advertise that how does word get out. I'm kind of cannot ties it because this is all done in talks. Euphemisms. Anyway, I mean, no one talks about hiding that money. You talk about, you know, acid protection or about, you know, about secrecy jurisdictions, you talk about confidentiality, confidentiality and secrecy the same thing that just putting a different spin on it. You talk about being a tax haven. You talk about avoiding fiscal friction. Say you don't ever talks about a bribe? You talk about a consultancy payment or possibly a facilitation payment. You know? So so the the language of money land is the language of obfuscation of circumlocution you come up with a way of saying something that sounds better. I mean, none of these ever to being a tax haven either. The international financial centres possibly offshore financial sentence. But tax haven is derogatory. So no one would use that. So, but essentially there is an industry these people who arrange these structures, they know which jurisdictions of the best they're always looking for ones that have better. So essentially the advertising is kind of taken care of it's very word of mouth. Everyone's very plugged in very connected where does Donald Trump fit into money land? I think that the I mean as the lot spoken about Donald Trump and his ties to Russia and all of that, you know, to sit and extend the jury is still out a lot of that. I think that what I'm interested by this by Donald Trump and buy a whole class of property developers in the United States of whom he is just one is that since the financial crisis. I've become very dependent on money on investment from foreign buyers. The sources of capital dried up domestically for a long time. And therefore they were dependent on money. China money from Russia money from from elsewhere in order to finance the construction of his top-end real estate blocks. And that to me is the real scandal. That actually I'm very surprised that the US media has not been spending more time looking at is that the there is a whole kind of class of businessman. Donald Trump is just one who have been accepting money from very unscrupulous. Sources many very shady sources in order to get these projects off the ground. I think if we see if you look at the five visa program, which is what brings foreign investments into the US in exchange for green cards, most of the applets from China. And yet it's very very hard to check the origin of any wealth in China that have been a couple of cases in which people have been shown to be cut across I expect that there will be many many more even come close to exposing. What's been going on? I think that that that's been remarkable very worrying lack of concern of interest of diligence in the Arjun, the wealth that's going into these investment projects. So for me. That's how. President Trump fits into money land is as a businessman as a property developer. He has benefited from investment from some murky obscure shady sources, and I don't think that's been nearly enough scrutiny of weather that money came from in terms of Donald Trump's place in in money land you quote, a Reuters investigation about Trump properties can yourselves a couple of things that investigation phone. It was a it was in the early days of the Trump presidency. When those journalistic feeding frenzy to find any connection between Donald Trump and Russia, and they went to look at a Trump developments and tried to find how many Russians owned properties in them. And they did I mean that were you know, a few dozen Russians owned properties in in these developments in that was important. And it was good that they that they found it. But from my perspective, it was for more interesting that more than seven hundred of these units were owned obscurity. They were owned shell companies. So. We don't have any idea who owns the tool, and that's where money comes in. Because you essentially it's more than not knowing what's important. These people these seven hundred three units which were owned obscurely. They could have been owned by Putin president, gee, or, you know, the Chavez family or whoever it's that secrecy that I'm concerned about rather than, you know, the the the idea that you know, couple of dozen Russians. I mean, if you if you put your own name on a unit and your Russian oligarch, then you're a bit of an idiot. Really, I mean, and then idiot so that the anyone who owns the property in Florida narrow name is not going to be, you know, top ranking FBI agent, whatever. So that's the the the story which I think is not been focused on is the way that that people. It's so easy for people to hide what they're doing with money that buying them money. And therefore where the money comes from. Because you don't know who they are our below. I wanna thank you so much for talking with us. Thank you for having me. It's been wonderful Oliver below is the author of the new book money land after we take a short break. Ken Tucker will review lizards new album? I my gig economy perspective, the idea of income smoothing and making sure that you are on you have credit through a year, even with intimacy and income, I think he's super important and something that we've looked quite recently. I think this screams to me, you know, if you're gonna invest the money invested on the consumer consumer price, and so I had and you're actually build up those services. It'd be interesting from my perspective to understand how much of an overhead that's actually going to cost versus income make because there's a reason why you didn't want to do any of this was the hands. Because of course. Going to be quite high. Maybe it was just they just couldn't be bothered or they just didn't want to have that sort of overhead on their on their books on their shoulders. So be interested to see this goes on. How much is this actually going to cost them versus how much revenue they make these hits actually cripple a company they're invested in offer on over one Wednesday. A review of the US postal service proposes a sweeping change likely to hit a company you may have heard of called Amazon what a proposal from the treasury led task force says about charging more for certain package deliveries. Let's get more from our DC bureau. Joining us now is the Wall Street Journal's Jonty McKinnon, welcome back. Thanks. So President Trump has often said on Twitter that the postal service. We said a lot of things, but a lot of it implies that the postal service has a sweetheart arrangement with Amazon and here we are with the new proposal from the treasury. Let's let's talk about what we know what it says what it doesn't say. What can we glean from? This proposal thus far. You know, the the main points are that the report proposes several changes that would collectively have the effect of basically pushing up rates for delivery. Of packages from companies like Amazon, by the postal service. So Amazon would have to pay more probably other shippers would have to pay more as well. And it feels like, you know, Amazon is the big target here. Trump and CEO Jeff Bezos have clearly been at odds. How could a move like this hit Amazon more specifically? I know it relies on the postal service quite a bit. Yes. That's right. I mean estimates are up to forty five percent of their deliveries are done by the postal service. So it's hard to know. Here's where the report really kind of comes up a little short. It doesn't provide a lot of specifics on exactly how much rates would go up. It's just kind of suggesting that something that the governors of the postal service need to figure out and from there. It's just a question of working out the numbers, it's hard to tell from this, though, exactly how much rates might go up and Amazon and all sorts of. Of firms like the national retail federation. They're part of this group called the package coalition. They're pushing back in a statement that really says that this can harm consumers and beyond. What's what's the pushback? Been like, well, it's been pretty significant just since the report was released. But I think what lies ahead is going to be even more significant. They are really promising to take their case to Capitol Hill and lobby hard to get this problem that they see resolved. I think that they want the postal service to go in another direction altogether. When it comes to trying to balance the books, and there is also getting pushed back by postal workers as well. That's an important way in here. So what further conversations are to be heard before anything really get solidified here. What else needs to be sorted out? I well, I think what you're going to see probably is a big debate next year in congress about what direction this postal service reform ought to take. Okay. You know, it's interesting that the administration is weighing in so strongly on the side of basically, dealing with the postal services problems through the pricing of package delivery. I think that you'll see kind of a battle between that point of view, and the shippers point of view, which would basically try to take care of the postal services financial problems by addressing their mainly by addressing the big obligations. They have to their giant number of retirees in their healthcare benefits. Right. Yeah. This is something that's been set in motion. It'll be interesting to see where this goes from here. But I guess it's still early jump. Thanks so much for the time. Yeah. You bet.
