"And it's great for right now, but there will be a price to pay like the monkey's paw will curl like that. There's a finite number of moves and the off season is the same length regardless. So either you spread them out or you get them done all at once and then you have little left to talk about. All else being equal, better to front load the off season than backload it. I think I would rather have this wondering like where sprays heartbreak are gonna sign in February or whatever. Teams are in spring training and some of the best free agents are available. Only like, hey, if you're a fan, you get to daydream about what your roster will look like over these long cold months. So that's good. But would you rather have like if we could just parcel it out so that you have a steady stream of moves rather than just ultra compressed frenetic activity? I am the worst person to ask this question of because my perspective on it is shaped by a very particular position. I occupied with this ecosystem. But I think that having stuff come out of at a regular pace over the course of the winter months is a nice way to do things like it gives people little jolts that remind them like spring is coming and baseball is coming and now you have two months to remember that that guy is going to be on that team. So I tend to like the steady drip and not just because it allows for sort of a more manageable balance of work to life in these months when we are meant to perhaps rest rest ever so slightly just rest, but absent that I think that if you're going to have a frenzied pace having it at the beginning of the off season rather than the end, is meaningfully better for all of the reasons that you highlighted. I think that it sort of creates an excitement that can sustain itself over the winter months and it gives people time to adjust to the new reality of their roster and we don't have any of that sort of prickly contentious were a week away from spring training in the best free agents or unsigned sort of thing. So if we must clump them together, this is the preferable clump. But I think that an advent calendar opened by a non toddler is really the model that we ought to strive for. We have bits and pieces that unfurl themselves and we get to write our stories and feel excitement and sleep. Yeah, we never really rest here unaffectedly well. So we will podcast regardless of whether there is actually anything to talk about. We promise to talk at you later what? We'll just have to get creative. All right. So we will end there and attempt to post this podcast before every other free agent site. All right, that will do it for today. Thanks as always for listening. I was hoping we could post this podcast before there were more moves, didn't quite make it. It's the Marlins, making more moves. We had an intra Florida trade, the rays bolstered by Corey Kluber and bursting at the seams on the 40 man, have traded Joey Wendell to the Marlins, not for a pitching prospect, but for an outfield prospect, so the Marlins are now one step closer to a credible lineup and also a pretty good player pretty versatile player, sort of squeezed out by the raised excess of infield talent, but should be a good fit for the Marlins, possibly spelling the end of the Lewis Brinson era, not a distinguished tenure in Miami for mister Brinson, but the Marlins are officially an interesting team who may have more moves ahead of them, while we wait to see what other activity comes to pass before the expiration of the CBA on Wednesday night, you can support the podcast on Patreon by going to Patreon dot com slash effectively wild. "It's disgusting and despicable and we are so ashamed and it's gross right and then the rockies want to do an investigation annabi wanted you investigation and people are reacting and like how could this happen and who how could the people just sit there and let this the inward lewis brinson and then it turns out after an investigation after they talked to fans that were sitting in that section talk to the fan himself watched the broadcast again. He was not saying in word he was saying her which is the dinosaur mascot for the rockies. Her that's what he's saying he was trying to get diggers attention. Because you take away from the year so you could get up. Yes if you go back and watch the video you can see him waving and going of course confirmation bias right that the thing when you read a headline that says fan calls lewis brinson and inward and then you listen to it. That's all eight or sounds like he is saying i'm alive in the stands to keep to keep shouting miss. How was he same thing you guys i was like i have got to give white people more credit than that right. Someone would say something like no one would just let this man yell it word over again especially this is colorado right. This isn't louisiana would expect that there But it just turns out that it was all a terrible coincidence. And if lewis brinson had not been up to bat if it had been a white player right we probably wouldn't have thought about that guy all the everything aligned for it to be the perfect storm. Yes yes but but what was interesting i did. I did appreciate lewis. Brinson comments ability Yesterday where he said he admitted. I hear the n. word. I've listened to about fifty times in sixteen hours is still here but if that if that man was not saying that i i'm sorry that he's you know all the backlash that that has come as a result of that clip But he said even if it didn't happen in my situation like does happen other black players. You ask any of them. We have experienced it so i thought it was. I love the way he handled it because in that particular moment that that fan was not yelling the word but when you talk to black players like i used to cover the major league baseball like they would talk about Incidents that happened to them and going into certain city so it is we have to be mindful that those do happen just not in this particular case but man dinger like shouting the mascot of all the Okay no fence that fan but of all the ridiculous things. We'll we'll talk about the white sox today. I do a main about the orioles in the way their seasons playing out. But i wanna talk about this. What happened In the game that we saw the other day between the marlins the colorado rockies the rockies made the announcement that They determined that the fan who yelled out actually yelled out dinger Trying to call to the rockies team mascot lewis brinson who was in the next circle when that happens a listen to the video and he spoke reports yesterday giving listen to what he had to sec while salat Especially when i heard that You know he said dinger said of the inward I personally This is again my personal opinion. Personally keep hearing the n. word It's not that i want to hear it Never want to hear that word Personally i've never been called that in person to my face on the baseball field Outside the baseball field ever jess. I watched the video saw. The you know the the gesture of the fan. I think he said dinger. But in listening to lewis brinson yesterday who was just so open in speaking of the borders in you could see his face. He was earnest and he was trying to figure out how exactly to handle this moment. I thought you know. At the classic example of grownup white is i did or being african american in the shoes. Lewis brinson. 'cause i never wondered in my lifetime you know if someone's gonna yell something like that me. I've never had that. And i feel like it's so awful that his you know his life experience puts them in a place where he's sitting and watching the video fifty times as he said in wondering what was said i that i feel bad that he's sitting there answering questions about. Yeah and you know. It continued in that interview to was him apologizing. Even the fan of he's ike if he said dinger and i misunderstood him. He's like i apologize that he's received any sort of backlash and he was so genuine. And honestly look beat up like you know here. He is and the dog days of august season and just racially having to respond to stumping really leg clearly like it. He heard one thing that that definitely absolutely one hundred percent bothered him and the now. this is being analyzed. Articulated like with you know just pinpoint this is what happens is what what it was and every day. He's going to the ballpark having to answer questions about something that he does not want to do. Yeah and i've never had to do that. I don't i can't you know i can. I can empathize with them. Tried to. But i i've never been in that position in just. I learned so much about all that i got to say from my little sister. Amelia amelia lincoln who Have akina in two thousand. Ten was diagnosed a new year's eve and over the next three years. I learned so much about Trying to get in somebody else's shoes because she would tell me stories about how people would walk up to her and say an her form of leukemia. Thank goodness you know. The doctors at dartmouth in mass general have saved her life. She's doing great now but there were two or three times when She we we wondered if she was going to make it. You know by through the end of a month And they were. There would be times when people would walk up to her and say to her. I know what you're going through. You know my mom had that or my cousin had that and it bothered because they couldn't relate to it. They couldn't relate to the fact that she is staring her mortality in the face they couldn't really relate to exactly what she was experiencing a knowing that she wasn't going to be able to have kids all the life changing things that happened during this time that that to me was such a valuable crime and so that's what i thought of last night when i listen. Lewis brinson like god. I can't imagine being that position where something has yelled out and you're even having no sauce. 'cause i never have i think honestly buster Living in a time were sheet seems to be so much the forefront of of more what people are saying in feeling now more than i mean i i can't directly relate to lewis brinson in exactly those words but definitely in hearing more hatred now than ever It's it's i think there's a reason why he's hearing what he's hearing in. It's the time it's because those words not hatred is so profound now more than ever and other that word hasn't been used over and over for way too long anyway. But i do feel like we're living in a time where this is something that is whether you hear it or not. It's there and it's there and it's stronger than it ever has been. And whether that word was directly said to him or not the fact is is that negatively that hatred is is so much a part of our society right now and it's sad because as much as you want to go out gave a baseball or just go out and live your life so much hatred buster and. that's something i i've personally That the shocks me because that people would even go about their day trying to target and look out at other people in an hateful way to where you get defensive and you start to hear in feel it even sometimes if it's not there. Hey i just you know just watching. Who's interviewed just still terrible. Form that As they say that he's sitting there feeling in need to watch a video that many times. The wonder what was being said an app to answer questions about it. There's no way to transition into baseball stuff. But i'll try to do it I was talking with. Sarah lands before about the white sox jess i really feel like this is a team that while other teams were wondering if they can overcome injuries and whether or not they can overcome roster problems it feels like a white sox are coming together as we get closer october. What are you saying. Louis robert making his return and i mean it was just as i say stupid game. 'cause the stupid stupid missive of just their offense and you saw sunday baseball against the cubs. Three home runs in the first inning. It almost felt like a repeat automatically anderson leading off at the home. Run the command menez. Hitting two home runs night. Game you on moncada. Joining the party as well Again like i mentioned lease robert just even more. He had a couple of knox as well in that game. But my biggest thing is start to think about men's teams in the postseason like now rate. So how are they going to. Fair in october is how you start to kind of evaluate them because the division is way down and they're just continue to dominate like. They did last night. And i just looked at the house smart. They were to take bulletin. That was already really good. Buster but understand. What wins in october because then of the day..

Ologies

"Excess carbon from the atmosphere according to the twenty nineteen paper how wildfires trapped carbon for centuries to millennia. Okay but wildfires burn at eight hundred degrees celsius. That's fourteen seventy two fahrenheit america so the animals hate natural and cultural burns to right. No animal wants to be trapped in a blaze. But i'm just going to stop myself from singing about the circle of life in your ears and then from an ecosystem perspective. And from what i like to think about. A lot is the bio diversity perspective. So you know what. Kinds of animals there are in the richness of of animal life and plantlife fires create this template for wildlife plants to thrive. And also this the creates this this natural dynamic where you have places that burn in one year and then don't burn for awhile places that burn frequently in places that burn high severity low severity. You can kind of think about as patchwork this mosaic of different ages of forests that burned a different times and that creates a really diverse landscape that generates the habitat for lots of critters. It can be a really regenerative in restorative process to the land both from a ecosystem perspective. Also really you know. Fire is a necessary part of the systems and so when we can put the right kind of fire on the landscape it really benefits us to as people in a society so fire mosaic paints a beautiful picture of land in different states of recovery. And if you're looking to learn more about it. Don't google fire mosaic. Unless you want to see a lot of tiling crafts that seemed to be in a mosh to burning man but look up the official term. It's patch mosaic burning. So let's talk different flavors of fire because it does matter so you can think this is a really overly simplistic way to think about fire because fire is really complicated process but the way that we often sort of describe it and think about it within fire ecology world. Is we think about natural low. Severity fire regimes. You know in a given area you might expect fires to sort of burn a lower severity not too hot. Not too all consuming. They burn along in the under story. Nice and happy crawl along in. Burn some logs here. Brinson trees there but generally don't destroy or consume the big trees in the over story of the canopy so that i ended the system. That's frequent low severity fires and then on the other end of the whole spectrum. You can think about infrequent high severity fires or fire regimes. Rather so these are places in that area is for fires. Women do burn to burn pretty big pretty hot and those are both natural but natural in those different places and so why is it. Why is it that you have some places that naturally burn low severity at and generally. I'm talking about forest fires here and then other places other forests that naturally burn it really high severity and really large. We can think about those two ends of the spectrum also in terms of what's limiting the system so in these low severity fire systems. Those are generally systems that are limited by fuel. And so what i mean by that is the climate is such that on any given year. The conditions are right for fire. Like if there's a lightning strike or another ignition fires gonna burn and the fuel is dry and the only thing that's keeping that fire one of the primary things that's controlling that fire and where it burns is where the fuel is where the the trees are where the kindling so to speak is and because those fires those places ignite every year ignitions all the time and the conditions are right for fire. They burn really frequently. And so you can think about places where the fires burn every couple of years and when they do burn they kind of clean out or a a burnham in that under story so sort of below the forest canopy it's burning the smaller trees burning some of the medium trees and burning some of the big trees but mostly it just every time a fire burns it burns all about fine fuel. Were a lot of it right. And so that's the primary sort of control on how fire burns in some of these dry fuel limited systems so in these areas. The way it's supposed to be fires. Don't get mega. Because blazes are more frequent so burning all of the fallen wood and the under story so an excess of fuel doesn't build up so that's one way that these giant devastating fires can be avoided and then on the other end of the spectrum. You have these climate limited systems so rather than the system being limited by fuel it's limited by climate and so this is a place like the pacific northwest Where it's really wet right. It's generally wet most the time it's cool. There's may be quite a few editions but when those emissions occurred the fuel is not really ready to burn. It's too wet. And maybe it burns a small fire or something like that but it's kind of extinguishes itself and you think about that system though those kind of areas and when you end up getting those really big infrequent severe fires that occur there. It's because there's been a some sort of climate activity like drought. That's caused all that fuel that hasn't burned in a really long time to dry out and then it burns and when it does burn it burns really big. 'cause there's tons of fuel available right and so those are kind of the two ends of the spectrum and you know. I was trying to think about this today. How do i describe that that. Like spectrum in a way. That's not so dry and academic. And i was thinking about like okay like the haircut that i get is like a frequent fire system. Okay i go to greatclips or sport clips or whatever just down the street from me and get my haircut every few weeks. Maybe every month. It's kinda maintains the general structure never kind goes super long and never budget super short. Either i just kind of keep it. You know tamed. So i go in there frequently i clean out. Sort of the the growth right. That's happened in between each cut and on the other end of the spectrum. You can have somebody. And i did this once when i was in college. You think you're right after college you know. Grow your hair super-duper long i. I didn't cut it for madame. Never exactly how the less but let's see see grow you here for year five years or something you know get some pretty floppy pretty pretty Crazy here at least if you got like me. And then you say. I'm gonna budget. And so the you buzzer right off. That's of the. I don't know you kind of think about that as the two the two ends of the spectrum right. You've got like your frequent haircut system and you've got your infrequent high severity haircut system where you know you just let it grow and then you cut it all off. Okay so in this analogy. The regular maintenance cuts are the low intensity fires. The ones that burn the undergrowth that don't spread too far or that extinguished themselves because there's enough moisture to keep things from being straight bone dry powder keg kindling but if those small fires don't happen or if the fire resistant older trees are logged out or if the climate is just super hot then you get a situation. That's much more dramatic and is that like long main Cut is that what. A mega fire is then. Yeah so that term. I would say that's a good way to think about it. Your from belong to the bus. Cut the term. Mega fire is a really interesting terminent. Really doesn't have a great definition a lot of people when they talk about mega fires. They're thinking about these basically really big fires just fires the giant in size but you can have a really really large fire that doesn't necessarily create that forest buzz-cut right doesn't necessarily kill all the trees within its path in may kill some trees in some parts but not throughout the whole fire so a forest mullet maybe but not the cool kind. That jenny has the warning..

All star caused lewis. Brinson career has gone in the toilet and one of the things that we're doing. I wanna get an update from tony here in a second about what happened with the mean but friday night tomorrow night billy mike sure and an assortment of others are going to be watching marlins yankees on our youtube channel and you can watch the game with them if you have the mlb package. Chris cody. Are you going to partake in the fun. I gotta get to tony here and find out what happened with a mean yesterday in milwaukee. 'cause there were two great results. We were rooting for one. Just wave upon wave of super spreader event Dear district trying to dunk amine in a dunk tank or nine drunks. Who go to a bar on a wednesday morning a bar. That's opening early. And it just being a sad thing where we spend a bunch of money at metal art media to send tony and amine out and all we do is get a bunch of wandering around in milwaukee bar. That's not great content. So what kind of update can you give us on. What's going to be birth from there. Dan i'm really excited about tomorrow and i have to admit i'm also a little nervous. See mike sure he's smart. And i'm i'm gonna need billy to do some heavy lifting here because i can't find myself in a three hour conversation with mike. Sure i'm not equipped for it. You gotta do is love baseball. I do and that's what we're gonna lean on. But i'm just nervous. He's a smart guy intimidating. You shouldn't be intimidated by him. He's a very nice and decent person. Andy super excited weirdly. I'll never understand how the guy who makes parks and rec and the good place in brooklyn nine. Nine and rutherford falls. He is excited. But he's just looking forward to sitting down and watching a baseball game with you guys and just talking. Don't understand why he loves you guys as much but he does. it's weird. I honestly texted him over the weekend. The just verified that this is a thing he actually knew that he was participating in and wanted to be part of because it was kind of one of those things like. I want to say Chris cody and i were actually quietly. engage in conversations to broadcast actual marlins game on the radio with the marlins And then we kind of had to go through a whole thing where you have to get approval to do this stuff and it was actually looking good and we send it to espn and like that's for some time. Some of these things would would kind of go away but yeah a good unknown poorly because we got the green light from them. We were got the approval we were. I thought good to go but they said you know what since we have this partnership with seven ninety the ticket just kinda run it by 'em because the games aren't on seventy ticket and we'll see you know it shouldn't be a big deal. I don't think that they would have done this to dave van horn right so i think the two of us are going to call a game with with glenn geffner and And then i gotta know from seven ninety. The ticket and i was not happy about that. I was very upset about it. Because i thought you know what listen. It's seven o'clock game like on wednesday or something like it's not like we're taking away this massive audience for whatever seven ninety the ticket to go to nine forty because that's where it was on time right so had a silent protests really of that. History was made and that one small step for the billionaire. They also have been a giant leap for space travel. Here's abc's transportation correspondent gio benitez space. The final frontier to me space is what is occupying the greatest of the stories that we tell in just the same way that the exotic voyages taken by intrepid explorers centuries ago at edward the role they had played in the hearts and minds of those who lived in our never ending quest to understand our universe this weekend humankind breaking new barriers ushering in what could be the dawn of a new era commercial space for civilians. Richard branson at venturer entrepreneur known for his extreme stunts made history yesterday becoming the first person to launch into space aboard his own station. This is the new space race. Not between superpowers like russia china and the us but between billionaires instead of countries it is companies often led by individuals that have different freedoms and different ways of doing business than their governments. Brinson basil's and muff three titans of the internet. Eight are all competing to win this next frontier of space exploration with the hope to bring not just astronauts but paying customers to the edge of our existence but some predict say this race to space is the new sort of elitism a chance to capitalize on the 'cause moves. Richard branson. Did he start virgin. Galactic in order to democratize space and to make space available to the masses. I think did secondary his first priority is establishing a business brinson journey into space started sunday morning in new mexico around eight forty. Am local talk. Virgin galactic mothership eve carrying the spaceship unity with it took to the skies joining the billionaire on board two pilots and three other civilian employees. They get up to about forty five thousand feet and then they they release that spaceship from the mothership. Three to one release. They're going twice the speed of sound. In less than ten seconds at that point branson and his crew were blasted to the edge of space giving them four minutes of weightlessness and the opportunity to look back at planet earth for the next generation of three. Just imagine what you can do. Very excited brinson joined us right. Excuse fellow astronaut. An members risha bendler was by his side. She is only the third indian american woman to fly to space. I've gotten so many messages. Especially from young women saying that they want to go to space also and they want to be an engineer. And it's just been incredible. Brinson and his team can now officially say they've won the so-called space rooks beating jeff phases blue origin by nine days. But some argue that branson's and bezos advancements in space tourism will only serve the ultra rich to snag a spot on blue origins upcoming flight. An auction winner paid more than twenty eight million dollars virgin galactic to start sending people into space next year. But their tickets are whopping two hundred fifty thousand dollars per seat when you hear that criticism from folks who say these are just joyrides for very rich people. What do you say. well. I would say that If i go right back to. When i was a child i started with Two hundred dollars and that two hundred dollars has now built a space. Companies employed hundreds of wonderful engineers and scientists and that technology will help transform. The earth still retired nasa astronaut. Katie coleman sees incredible value in these trips by bringing so many different kinds of people up to space and letting them see that perspective of what it looks like to look back at the earth. It's our place in that. Perspective is something that i think is really valuable down here on earth to try to face the challenging problems that we face today. In fact ben lewis says yesterday she was actually conducting research actually carrying research experiments actually strapped to my leg. So i mean this. Capability is going to transform the research and technology that we can develop in microgravity brinson stream started back in two thousand and four when i launched virgin galactic with the hope of bringing space travel to the masses as he told former. His plans to reach space turned out to be a seventeen year affair sometimes fraught with tragedy like in two thousand fourteen when virgin galactic lost one of its pilots michael. All's beirut during one of the companies test lights some painful moments in that are seventeen years some wonderful moments but it's been seventeen years of hardware. The new yorkers nicholas middle witness much of that work firsthand and documented it in his book test. God's i remember walking into that hangar in november two thousand fourteen and they're on the far side of the hangar was the husk of this species that we saw yesterday space. You know we looked like a have bill. Car says a contributor to branson. Success is his charisma. "Will Brinson the bearded one, Mr Branson? Hello. Well, what's up, buddy? Happy, belated New year. What's up, Bill? Yeah. Beard feared gang and Full effect as we head into the latter half of the first mother 2020 and Happy New Year to you, 2000. Thank you, pal. All right, so let's start with Doug Peterson. There's a lot to get into here. Maybe just your reaction. Your initial take away. To the Super Bowl championship head coach of the Eagles no longer being the head coach of the Eagles. Yeah. I mean, it was. It was certainly shocking news when it dropped. You know, Jason, locking for report is one of those really jealous? He tweeted it twice. That's how you know, like, sure you want to make sure that tweets there through that's all Surprising it is that you know that that he gets fired and it really does feel like the Eagles made a Very conscious decision to say. All right, It's got to be Carson wins or Doug Peterson. And I mean, we probably have seen that coming. It felt like with all the tension surrounding those two as they headed into the end of the 2020 season that ultimately Philadelphia, If you to me, I get the sense that Doug Peterson sat down with Jeff Laurie. And Jeff Lurie said. You know, bad season. What do we need to do tow? Make sure things were going in the right direction. And it does. I don't know go, Pearson said. It's either him or me or, of course, and Winston said, timber Me. Or if Doug Peterson said, Hey, look, you know Howie Roseman ain't exactly you know, he had exactly done a great job grocery shop in the last couple of years ago. 11 Pro bowler since 2016. Whatever those conversations took place, it became clear that you know it wasn't going to work with the with the current generation of personnel. Front office and coaching staff moving forward. And so it made sense for Doug Peterson to depart for ways you mean to be perfectly, frank. The Eagles had mean they took the path of the path of least financial resistance by parting ways to Doug Peterson, instead of dealing with the financial capital modifications that come with You know, Move it Trading Carson Lancer cutting Carson Wentz. And You have to wonder. Where does this leave them moving forward? Because now you have Franchise that while they want a super a couple years ago, is saying, all right our best outcome to try to fix this and by doubling down on Carson Wentz and Mammoth that roster And you know how he rose been hiring his third head coach Now who I mean, it doesn't feel like there's a quick fix here. I guess my point Will Branson here on the show. Well, with all that said, right, the The sense that went is going to be foisted on whoever gets that job. The Over involvement from the front office and the front office's lack of success and doing what it's actually supposed to do The cap situation. Where does this job rank on the desire ability scale of the jobs that rather like if you could check to choose between this and the judge job? Are you on that jet jobs, some beauty. That this is Jeff's office of Way better than the Eagle shop. I mean, way that I think you know, better way better. Yeah, I think that there is a clear cut. Three. So I got the Jaguars and Chargers at one A and one B charges me a little bit higher. Depends. I mean, way to go to the gala. I had charges and she doesn't want anyone be doing going a whole tangent here. Um, and then the Jets to me are clear third option there. And I think there's a big drop off after that. Now you are, you know you go to Atlanta or Detroit. You certainly have You know a franchise quarterback in Matt Ryan or Matthew Stafford. But there are older Houston is probably at the bottom of lettuce right now. Really? You think the show wasn't going away? I mean, you're you're coming into a new killer situation, right? Like you don't know when you take that job is to show Watson thing is gonna be there, not. I mean, that's that would be a pretty scary king because The only thing that makes that job attractive is to show on Watson. So I think I probably had them forth. And then they stood down the last. You know, with this news about Watson, um I guess maybe the Eagles would be I think the Eagles would probably be ahead of the Texans because Okay, I have stuff. I mean, you're stuck with win. You have the jail and her saying, You know, At least they have good. They have good rap picks. And But I mean, you know, e mean, it's not like the rosters in great shape. I mean, they've you know, they have lots of stars, but they're mostly aging stars. And you know you are gonna have this situation with Howie Roseman, where If you don't win early, he's gonna be under scrutiny. You're going to be under scrutiny. It's not. It's I mean, I think it is far in below far, far, far below the Jets job because the Jets have At least like they can go withstand become keeper all the sand Arnold. Or they could draft Zach Wilson or Justin Fields to you Could trade the number two pick and move down. Acquire picks. You know, there's there's so much cap flexibility there and, um, you know, ask that's available. Where is in Philadelphia? You know, I think there's more young blue chip players in in New York and then in Philadelphia. Really it is crazy about. It's crazy. How bad the Eagles job really hit. Is there a sense will Brinson the freedom of coach would have when they come in as it relates to Sam Donald being the quarterback of the future or not? I don't I don't know that the Jets even know Um and I think that I think, yeah. I mean, I think I think I would say that. Whoever is going to come in there the way that Joe Douglas, the GM is operating, I mean, he is. He's a football guy through and through right, and he's not trying to bring in. As I understand it. He's not trying to bring in some coach. He's gonna keep his come on and give coach does what he tells him to do. I think he wants to bring in someone who he can collaborate with to develop a program and build a building program developed culture there, General And so given that I think it makes sense to assume and believe that whatever coach comes in, the coach is not being hired to fix him..

ICU Workers Are Quitting Due To Crushing Stress From COVID-19 Surge
"Surge in Corona virus cases has left hospitals across the country in a very bad place. ICUs are filling up fast, which is putting more pressure on critical care teams, especially nurses as Jackie 40 of member station, KPCC reports. Summer quitting because of the stress for 10 months, June, Jaha has treated the sickest covert 19 patients in the ICU. He works at L. A county USC medical center, one of the county's largest public hospitals. Right now, the I feel crazy. He thought he'd seen the worst of the pandemic back in July, when cases spiked if it's so much worse than before. And it's taking a toll on the staff, John says. Every time he goes to work for another 12 hour shift, two or three other ICU nurses have taken time off. All the nurses is already started burning on You can't feel something in north of this depression. Burnout isn't the only reason for the staffing crisis during the first week of December, more than 1700 Healthcare workers across L. A county tested positive for the coronavirus. That was double the number from the week before. Like many healthcare workers who treat covert patients, Jonah has never been tested for the virus by his employer. He has to go to a free testing site on his days off, kinda using you. That's why we have so many nerves left. All right here. John has been an ICU nurse for more than 10 years, and he's proud of his work. But for the first time ever, he's thinking of quitting. Others already have. Like Chanel Rose crams. There eventually came a point where I told myself I have to find a different job because this stress from this is really making me physically sick. She started working as an overnight ICU nurse in February, right before the pandemic hit running between rooms, monitoring complicated medications and breathing equipment left her dripping in sweat. And afraid that she would contract the virus. Before each shift. She would sit outside the hospital in her parked car filled with dread. I would pray till I cried begging God, please not let me lose a patient tonight. I can't take it. I just need my patients to stay alive tonight. Calling patients families was also difficult, especially when she had to explain that there was nothing else the medical team could do to keep their loved one alive. You've already done the convalescent plasma and they've been getting decade, Ron and they've been getting rendez of here. They've been getting all the stuff and it just felt like ticking time bombs, and I didn't want to have to just sit and wait for all these people to pass away. After more than eight months in the ICU, she quit her job in October. Now. Rosecrans works as a surgical nurse for a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. But she still gets contacted by staffing agencies asking her to fill in at local ICUs. I don't see what the point of going right back would be because I feel like they're going to be operating in that crisis mode. Other nurses are quitting those high pressure jobs. Megan Bronson is a nurse in Dallas and a board member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Brinson says Thies nurses sometimes need more support. When you have whole family's coming into a nice you many times, that's morally very distressing. You're taking care of the mom that that and the adult Children all in the same ICU, she recommends that hospitals take a page out of the military's playbook and have debriefs. We're nurses are encouraged to talk about what happened on their shift. It can help with the feelings of isolation and nurses everywhere are hurting. There's not a nurse, no matter what their specialty I see or not, who is not having Cove it in their face every single day for NPR news. I'm Jackie 48 in Los Angeles.

Will Brinson on the PGA Tour
"Well with the PGA tour. Starting tomorrow wanted to bring on. My Guy Will Brinson as promised at will Brinson on twitter. He's host of the pick. Six podcast I've been on that. It's an excellent show. I enjoy it tremendously, but he also is really into Goff. He's really into baseball. Is really you know a lot of things before we get to the PGA tour or golf? Stuff will let me just ask you this. The I don't remember what it was called, but Tiger Woods Phil Mickelson you know. peyton manning Tom Brady. The ratings that did and the money that it generated I. Guess my first reaction was how much of that is because it's the only thing going on during the virus, and how much of it is because people thought it was cool. Just Watch one group of. Football players and a couple guys go like I. You know I almost thought of like if I'm tiger woods and Phil Mickelson like, why do I need to play these other events like every like three or four times a year? Get a couple, musicians, or you know movie, stars or athletes do one of these deals and a boatload of money from it. Yeah I mean I think. The ratings are definitely Ross a result of the pandemic to to a larger extent I. Mean Look at you know even like. The the last dance was awesome, and it was absolutely must watch television, but the ratings were not. I don't think like real last dance ratings if we actually have sports going on, we're not all sort of cooped up in the house so I i. think that does make a difference. People are itching for some real sports, but yeah, we look you're talking about putting four of the biggest sole celebrity athletes on the planet in a in a in a golf match. People are going to be interesting to see what happens. so so from that perspective I think it's something that that those guys will do more of and let's not forget I. Mean for all the you know the ribbing and like Oh like look who want etcetera etcetera. These guys are pocketing huge piles of cash, and so a lot of you raised a lot of money for charity, too, but I mean these guys are pocketing here's pile huge piles of cash when they do an event like this, this is not a not entirely out of the goodwill of their of their generous hearts. Did you. Bet on it will, and did you. Did you love it? I was I was actually. I missed the early part of it because I was actually playing golf myself. We can play golf in north. Carolina. and I didn't bet on it. Because I was I like. I didn't think there was enough value in the favorites if I if I didn't sitting at my computer and watching the the first part of probably prop bets Anything A. full-blown degenerate, but just because I was playing golf and didn't have the early part. and I didn't like the I like I like the I thought the favorites. The. Phase GonNa win. And but I, I thought that the best value was on the dog, and so I didn't I I. It was like a tough spot for me. I didn't love the price on it, and so I figured out playing golf myself. Maybe just stay away on this one. It's actually rare thing I'd bet on oddly enough. Steve I'm curious I didn't even ask you. Did you watch that? Did you get involved in it at all, did you? Did you like it? Do you think it could be sort of the future for Golfer? At least more have more of them in the future for golf? What about four holes do some strong opinions about? This golf is horribly flawed right now because the players are boring. And Dairy. I just I can't watch golf all the players. Basically I have no interest other than tiger woods. Who I like following because he has a personality, shows emotion and I think that that what really stood out how great that exhibition was is with you, know Phil, needling tiger back and forth, and and the like, and you know Brady struggling big time early. It was just it was riveting I. Think I would have watched it. had been full sports on and I. Don't watch golf because I'm I. I'm sorry I'm just bored in terms of betting. I'll tell you this. Thank goodness. There was no live betting that I saw on this event because after six holes when woods and manning up three, I was convinced they were GonNa win by seven. This was going to be one of the. The greatest blow outs of all time. It's woods home. Course he's hitting. Every fairway and Brady can't play a lick so I guess a little warning and live betting things can change because obviously, this match got very close at the end,

Even listen and subscribe to Daniel or hey, explain the universe on apple podcasts the iheartradio app or wherever you listen to podcasts. Welcome to brain stuff from how stuff works. He brain stuff unmourned Bogle bomb, and if you've ever eaten in the cafeteria or attended a cookout or family reunion in the United States. Chances are good that you are dessert or salad options included, some form flavored gelatin perhaps from the brand name jello, hundreds of recipes use flavored gelatin to create everything from your simple institutional style squares to ornate designs that incorporate varied flavors fruit and whipped toppings jello and similar mixes consist of five basic ingredients gelatin water sugar or artificial sweetener, flavorings and food coloring. The gelatin is what allows you to mold the stuff into whatever shape you like solid at room temperature but melts in your mouth, but let's breakdown y gelatin behaves that way gelatin is a processed version of a structural protein called collagen that occurs in many animals bodies, including humans collagen makes up almost one third of all the protein in the human body. It's a fibrous protein. Gene that strengthens the body's connective tissue and allows them to be elastic that is to stretch without breaking as you get older. Your body makes less collagen and individual collagen fibers become increasingly cross linked with each other one might experience this as stiff joints due to less, flexible tendons or wrinkles due to the loss of skin elasticity. Gelatin can also be made from the collagen in the bones, hides, and connective. Tissues of cows. Pigs today, the gelatin jello is most likely to come from pig skin. Collagen does not dissolve in water in its natural form. So it must be modified to make gelatin manufacturers grind the animal parts and treat them with either a strong acid or a strong base to dissolve the collagen. Then the pre-treated material is boiled controls every step of the process ensure purity and safety the materials are washed and filtered repeatedly during this process. The large collagen protein ends up being partially broken down the resulting product is gelatin solution that solution is chilled into a jelly. Like material then cut and dried in a special chamber at this point, the dry gelatin about ten percent water is ground. If it's going to make a flavor gelatin product like jello, it'll be ground into a fine powder. When you buy a box of whatever brand of flavor gelatin at the grocery store, you get a small packet of the powder gelatin with a sweetener flavorings and colors added at room temperature. The gelatin protein is in the form of a triple helix. This is a fairly ordered structure not entirely unlike that of DNA with DNA to chains of nucleotides are twisted together in a spiral pattern resembling a ladder. It's a design known as a double helix in the gelatin protein, three separate chains of amino acids called poly peptide chains have lined up and twisted around each other. So to make this dry gelatin able to fill out and take the shape of a mold you first at boiling water to the powder gelatin you then star the mixture for about three minutes until the gelatine dissolves completely. But what happens to gelatin? When you add that boiling. Water the energy of the heated water breaks, the weak bonds that hold the gelatin strands together, they're helix structure unwinds and you're left with free floating protein chains. A next you add hold water and refrigerate the gelatin mixture, which makes the chains begin to slowly reform into their tight triple helix structures as it cools the mass acts like a sponge soaking up the water that you added, but in some places there are gaps in the helix and and others. There's a tangled web of these poly peptide chains the chains form sort of net and the net traps water inside pockets between the chains. This protein net is strong enough that the gelatin will hold the shape into which it's been molded, but because of the water trapped in the pockets, the mold has that characteristic jiggle. But gelatin isn't just for making fun, molded salads, or desserts. Gelatin is a common ingredient in foods because it's so versatile. It can also be used as a thickener to give foods and more pleasing texture into a multiply or stabilize processed foods like yogurt or cake frosting. It's used to clarify juices vinegars and even beer special gelatins are made from only certain animals, or from fish to meet the standards of folks who don't eat products made from the mammals that are usually involved and vegetarian and vegan substitutes made from extracts of gooey stuff. Like seaweed are available to the range of those products that gelatin can be found in is legion everything from dairy and dairy substitute products like sour cream margarine and cream cheese to suites like gummy bears and marshmallows to process meats, like sausage and can't him to soup sauces, gravies jellies and even whipped cream. It's the coating for pills that makes them easier to swallow. It's in some lozenges, and white minutes, and cosmetics may contain a former gelatin that doesn't tell you might see it on the label as. Hydrolysed collagen and gelatin aren't just used in foods and health and cosmetic products. It's also commonly used in the manufacture of photographic films and papers match heads sandpaper glossy, printing papers, playing cards and simulated human tissue for testing, guns and ammunition and for forensic science. It's even sometimes used to hold down the hair a synchronized swimmers in place.
