"I'm Dave Schwan and the WGN radio newsroom, and these are the stories that matter on seven twenty WGN. Yes. December Justin MandA up there on vacation somewhere and Dame's hair. Mary is here. Mary van I'm Steve Cochran. And this is your CO spotlight, which the spotlight in the download on Chicago business important thing because we like to teach a little bit about business by talking about people are getting it done. Jim Schultz is here. Jim Watson name your business midwest longer Steve. And what were you doing before? You did this. Going to school. See jump right in. I did Hopton pretty quickly after I got out of out of college. And what is the business? We are a commercial distributor of laundry equipment. So basically any piece of laundry that is not one in your home. We sell it anywhere from. Loggerheads all over. You're the guy coin-operated machines for apartments, healthcare, hospitality, all that kind of thing. And also, yes coin laundromats, right? All right. So when you're a little boy, and you're grown up in thinking man, someday, I'm going to be the king of laundry. No, no. I was definitely not. But I can't say growing up. I did have a idea that I did want to be in business for your business wanted wanted to do my own thing since as long as I can remember sure, and it's really not about finding I guess a specific industry. I mean, it's great. If you can have a passion for the industry, but I have a passion for running my own company. And I've always had a good time doing it. Well, that's the thing that's important for people to hear because there's a lot of people that don't know what they wanna do. They know they want to do something in business and you're saying divan. Yeah. Yeah. Jumping I again, you don't have to find something again. Of course, it's great. If you can find something an industry truly love do. I have a. Burning passion for laundry machines, probably not. But I heard that before it's amazing. It's kind of it's kind of amazing grace. But I, but I do have a passion for my employees for my company, the what we've been able to build together over the last eleven years. I have a great team. And yeah, it's just something you jump in. And you really get into it. But what is the for for someone who has the is not a business is currently sponging off this company? What is the process if this is not something that you get up in the morning, all I can't wait to get involved with laundry. What's the thing about the passion that you have for the business? How do you make that transition? How do you run a business that you don't eat sleep and dream about how she did a business, right? How do you stay passionate about something? That's not your life's work necessarily again. I think it's it's finding a passion in the people that are with you on the ride. I take a lot of pride in the the team that we have put together and how we're able to create a kind of a family around. But there's a learning curve to record you have to learn the business you're in. Yeah. For for sure I had a little bit of background in the business before I started doing this. So I understood that I didn't have any machinery background, but I did have some sort of a little bit of sales background. Okay. In a way. So yeah, I was able to trans. Mission that. To what we have going on today. So it's got to be. Incredibly busy. I mean, honestly, I told you this in the hallway, and I mentioned months ago, it's something I never thought about but every every commercial business at as laundry machines. They're going to break down. You're gonna need parts. You're kind of in a foolproof situation here. Yeah. We really have a Al say recession resistant industry at some point. No matter how slow businesses they do need our services a hotel. Yeah. Hotel can be slower, but they're never going to do laundry. A restaurant can be slower. They're never not going to launder their table linens. You'd hope. So everybody needs that we do again a lot of multifamily buildings and things like that. So people are is going to need to do laundry. And so we're able to provide that Jim Shelton midwestlaundries, John. What's yours? I was gonna say go back eleven years ago. You say you don't have a passion for it. But how do you end up doing it? How does that fall into your lap? Why choose that? I had a my family had been involved in the coin laundry industry. So I had a little bit of experience through my college years being around the business and. Yeah. I was able to kind of phone my lap as you said. But I really think it was finding you know, if you're looking to start a business, or as you said, Steven you're say, hey, just jump in. It's really about. I think finding a void in market any market. Whether you're have a product or a service, it's looking at a market and saying how can I do better? And and kind of back then I looked at it and said, you know, hey, there's really not any. We started actually with all used equipment. We were a used equipment distributor exclusively for about three or four years and. We looked at it. And I said, you know, what there's really kind of a void here. There was nobody that was reputable selling this type of machinery, and that's when we jump in and put a team together, am I right about this? You started this with a pal? There's just you. Yeah. And pretty soon after my sister came on your sister. Yeah. Yeah. She came on to break up a family being in business together. Now, we know we all still get along quite well. So let's get your son actually have quality time with your family. But yeah, yeah, it's great. We still see each other usually family dinner once a week and all that. So like anything, you know, you have you have your disagreements and she's probably listening now chuckling about that as a family, do you do the wash together mandatory on right after dinner? I you know, what I think that would probably break it apart. That would be. We talk about this like if you own a restaurant that makes hamburgers. You don't wanna go home make the hamburger laundry at your house. Maybe saturday. I do the lawn. I even sometimes go to the laundromat. Yeah. I just think it's a cool story. I think it's a closed area. Because again, it's a business. You don't think of it's not so business where you have to have an app or you need a budget code writers in the back of the room. This is a good American business that everybody on some level is going to need in their life at some point. Yeah, we are obviously have laundry or stay in hotels as I said or use a hospital or a healthcare facility. So at some point. We're needed what kind of what kind of growth you talking about overloading. It's like when you started how many employees? One part time. And I was actually kind of part time for the first six months. I wasn't doing it completely. Now, there's twelve of us are brother jumped on board last year. So he's become our operations director. And yes, the twelve of us were seen pretty good growth actually, Sears been our best years thus far so about twenty twenty plus percent. So hopefully that continues to grade. Yeah. It's been it's been good. Congrats on the success. Thank you very much. The white piece of advice for a small business owner that you think they I don't know. I think you just can't stop you have to keep going. There's always going to be a lot of adversity there. Really is. It's never going to be an easy road, especially at the beginning. But if you're the kind of person that really doesn't stop and take no for an answer. I think you can do pretty well for yourself. And it's a business that you could keep in your family forever. Your four year old networking getting the company. No, no. She's I trying to get her to work on these machines. But she's just. A little taller. Yeah. Yeah. It's just it's not working out yet. But hopefully, they'll start pulling her weight soon. Well, if you have a great Christmas. Thank you. On a success for you. Don't listen there's people going to work. Now, the thinking about whatever service they might need. What would they do to get a hold of you? As well. We'll we'll we'll get to the rest of Europe. So we'll move onto. I don't know if I have them in exactly the order. I nor so I normally go like most exciting most compelling most interesting to like least interesting. I don't know if I have exactly that order, but where does explaining the order rank in the interesting category explaining it. Yeah. I would put that down near least end near the bottom. Yeah. Which is where you would expect Cardiff in Brighton. Oh, there we go. Yeah. Turn flipping around. You'll will professional segue. No big deal. So Cardiff Brighton, which you know, was the early buck crack dawn Saturday morning game, which we Jag about bailing by feel about it. Yeah. And of course, basically, we jinxed it back to life is what we did. You're welcome everybody who actually watch this game. What a beautifully shit game. Yeah. It was. It was interesting. You'd actually started out very fun like shockingly fun. They both scored there were both going back and forth, and then brightened picked up a red card the thirty four th minute that basically killed the game for the next fifty five minutes. So you can't take too much credit for reverse jinxing it back to life. It was only. It's only thirty four minutes of fun. And then of course, the red card which was just horrendously stupid play by by the Brighton player. Basically killed the game. Fifty five minutes for the next hour, basically Brighton park, the boss. It was it was it was not so much fun for the next for the next fifty minutes. But then like in one of these sort of, you know, so boring. No scoring moments at soccer comes up with out of absolutely nowhere. Sometimes the crazier sequences of life. You know of finished to us Akra game you'll receive it was the ninetieth minute cross game in Moba tried to bike it. Did you recall mogambo? Yeah. It's close enough. So Bob close enough. Can I give you one? I score. Go. Sing it for us. Now, I think that's all I got. So he did the base. He did a bicycle kick that hit the post game. We got setbacks throwing bikes right in the ninetieth minute. I mean relegation battle to relegation contenders. You'd think we got relegation bikes from centrebacks is out of nowhere. After like sitting there for fifty five minutes like wishing I was asleep and then just out of nowhere. Like, you know, Bumba throws a bike than somebody follows it up with a shot that the defender I think it's a foot on the flex it off the post. So it's too posted a row, and then Bama comes back and slams at home in the ninetieth minute to basically buzzer beater for the win like hated. So reason it would it struck me is that like the haters just loved to talk about soccer being boring because there's no scoring, but the flip side to that that these mouth breeders can't quite wrap their title brains around is that the fact there's a low scoring makes goals like this just it generates like a totally different level of pent up like energy in exhilaration. Shen when a goal goes in like, you can't you can't. So this is Cardiff Brighton. We're talking about here. So imagine you watching a game. You're not you. But the hater magin a hater watching like a baseball game. And seeing the, you know, the Pittsburgh Pirates Cincinnati Reds on a random Tuesday night and like jumping out of their seat at the end of the game..
