US says Russian warplane hits American drone over Black Sea

"The U.S. has had to destroy a surveillance drone in the Black Sea after an encounter with Russian fighter jets. The Pentagon says two Russian jets flew near the MQ 9 drone for more than a half hour in international airspace. They collided with the aircraft, damaging the propeller, and essentially putting in a situation where it was unflyable and uncontrollable, so we brought it down. Brigadier general pat Ryder, even as Russia denied the hitting the drone. It appeared to be the first time since the Cold War's height that a U.S. aircraft was brought down after being struck by a Russian warplane. The Pentagon confirmed yesterday afternoon that an F-16 U.S. Military fighter jet shot down what was described as an octagonal object over Lake Huron at President Biden's order. It was the fourth flying object shot down over North America in just over a week. This is a whole new level of aggression. Republican congressman Brian Fitzpatrick told Fox News the country's on high alert after three objects were shot down in as many days. The Pentagon said the object brought down yesterday didn't pose a military threat, but that it may have had surveillance technology and was flying at 20,000 feet, posing a potential risk to commercial flights. Similar concerns last Friday, when Brigadier general pat Ryder said in F-22 at the president's direction, shot down an object over Alaskan airspace. The object was flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet and posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flight. U.S. northern command is beginning recovery operations now. That came nearly a week after a suspected Chinese spy balloon was taken out by American fighter jets off the South Carolina coast, and a day before another object was shot down over Canada. Canadian and American fighter jets were scrambled and an American F-22 successfully shot down the object. Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau said Saturday he coordinated with President Biden and insisted that the two countries are playing close attention. We will continue to do everything necessary to protect the sovereignty of our savar shared North American airspace. Regarding the objects over Alaska and Canada, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer told ABC's this week they were balloons, similar to the Chinese balloon recovered from the Atlantic Ocean last week. They believe they were, yes. But much smaller. Critics of the Biden administration question why the Chinese aircraft was allowed to fly over the U.S. for days before it was taken out. Schumer was okay with that call but said on ABC, he still has questions. Senator tester is looking into why it took so long for us our military are intelligence to know about these balloons. That's something I support Congress should look at that. Democratic congressman Jim heims on NBC's meet the press. The second and the third objects were shot down in very remote areas. So my guess is that there's just not a lot of information out there yet to share. There's national security concerns on both sides of the aisle. Remember, a balloon can see a lot more on the ground than a satellite. Republican congressman Michael McCall, chairman of the House foreign affairs committee was on CBS's face the nation and had concerns about the Chinese spy balloon reportedly flying over military and nuclear sites. I think if you look at the flight pattern of the balloon, it tells a story as to what the Chinese were up to. Some pilots who came across the aircraft report different experiences, some didn't have any issues with nearby, others describing interference with sensors. Recovery efforts underway still in all four objects in North American officials will take a closer look at what's found to this point the U.S. says it's not known who exactly is responsible for the three most recent objects. The top stories we're following for you today, President Biden and prime minister Justin Trudeau. Jointly agree to take down an unidentified object violating Canadian airspace. And in American fighter jet with binational organization norad shot it down, Saturday afternoon. Canadian defense minister Anita Anand says the object posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flight. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first time that a norad operation has downed an aerial object. Canadian forces will now recover and analyze the object, Friday an American warplane shot down another object flying over Alaska and last week the U.S. Military took down a Chinese spy balloon off the Carolina coast. The Pentagon continues its recovery effort of an unidentified object shot down Friday over Alaska. The Pentagon says this latest object to invade U.S. airspace is the size of a small car, but unlike the spy balloon from China, did not appear to be maneuverable. The object was flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet and posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flight. And The Pentagon press secretary, Brigadier general pat Ryder also says we don't know the origin of the object. Again, we will know more once we're able to potentially recover some of those materials. This comes less than two weeks after the spy balloon also entered U.S. airspace over Alaska. President Biden has been criticized for not acting sooner to shoot that one down before it traveled over several states. It was shot down February 4th over the coast of South Carolina. That recovery operation continues as well. I'm Julie Walker. A pipeline that supplies gas and diesel fuel to some big cities in the west is back online. US jet shoots down unknown object flying off Alaska coast

"The U.S. Military shut down a flying object spotted off the coast of Alaska. It was detected Thursday, says Pentagon spokesman Brigadier general pat Ryder and shot down a day later. At the direction of the president of the United States, fighter aircraft assigned to U.S. northern command successfully took down a high altitude airborne object described as being about the size of a small car and could have been a danger to aircraft. The object was flying at an altitude of 40,000 feet and posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flight. The Pentagon is now working to recover the wreckage of this aerial device last Saturday, the military shot down a surveillance balloon from China, which had traveled across parts of the U.S. for a week, leading some to criticize President Biden for a slow response. "Electrical contractors come to grow. Good afternoon, I'm Sean Anderson. I'm Hillary Howard, Mike Jacques is our producer. We are following multiple developing stories first. The U.S. House overwhelmingly approved a resolution to condemn China for finding a spy balloon across the U.S., and nearly a week after being shot down, lawmakers remain angry about the incident WTO's Mitchell Miller on Capitol Hill. On this vote, the yeas are 419, the nays are zero. The rare unanimous vote needed two thirds approval in the house, and it came after lawmakers were briefed behind closed doors by administration officials about the incident. Many Republicans remain critical of President Biden for not taking action sooner against the balloon as it floated over the northwest. And Montana democratic senator John tester made it clear at a Senate hearing, he's upset about what happened. The truth is, I got a problem with the Chinese balloon flying over my state, much less the rest of the country. On Capitol Hill, Mitchell Miller, WTO, news. Meantime, the U.S. Military continues to collect and analyze the pieces of a spy balloon from China that drifted across the U.S. last week, and of course the military shot it down off the coast of South Carolina last weekend. As they sift through it all, they are learning a lot of information that officials say will be put to good use. WTO national security correspondent JJ green joins us live with more, JJ. The U.S. Military indicates they were well aware of this balloon way before it crossed into U.S. airspace. The important thing to remember here too is that this was an opportunity for us to learn a lot more about the PRC's balloon surveillance program. Pentagon press secretary, Brigadier general pat Ryder says this information will be tremendously helpful to them. So that'll all be very helpful information as we continue to track these kinds of capabilities around the globe and be able to detect and respond appropriately. These balloons have turned up in 40 countries over 5 continents. Such as Latin America, South America and to include East Asia. Europe was also included on that list of countries. Reporting live, JJ green. JJ, it's fair to say everybody from average Americans to the very top branches of government and military leaders want to know what the Chinese were able to glean. Have you learned anything about that? Yeah, according to general writer and several other sources from The Pentagon and the intelligence community, the U.S. was aware of this balloon before crossed in the U.S. airspace. And essentially they, as he's told us on several occasions, put into place terms or situations to mitigate what they could collect from this balloon. And so the question is how do they do it? They're not going to tell you this, but the U.S. does have capabilities to do that kind of thing. And some people equate it with jamming. So they're not saying that, but that's possibly what they're able to do as this balloon floated across the U.S., but we've also heard today as well that China wants to realize it had been discovered essentially stopped trying to collect information from this balloon so there is that too that The Pentagon and the military and the intelligence community have to investigate as well. JJ, thanks. You're welcome. WTO national security correspondent JJ green. Now to the latest out of turkey and Syria, the death toll in the region has passed 20,000 and is expected to keep climbing. China balloon: Many questions about suspected spy in the sky

"Many people are asking many questions about the massive white balloon from China drifting across U.S. airspace and wondering why the military hasn't shot it down. China says it was a weather research balloon, The Pentagon says. It's a surveillance balloon. The balloon, the size of three school buses is maneuverable, says Brigadier general pat Ryder, and it has sensors and surveillance equipment. The military took preventive action to keep the device from collecting intelligence as it flew over nuclear silos in Montana. Former CIA analyst Gail helt is among those who think that China's testing the U.S.. She says there are reasons why it's not being shot down. That amount of ammunition sent towards it is only going to cause a very, very slow leak. And that could be an unsafe move. Then it would be drifting aimlessly, potentially not being able to be controlled and God only knows where it's going to come down. CBS News brief, I'm Monica rix. In case CBS News time 1232, time now for our daily tech and business report, today we're joined by Bloomberg tech reporter Mark gurman. Apple is out with a special deal on its MacBook Pro for small businesses. So Mark, what is Apple offering and why? Thank you so much as always for having me. So this is a special Mac campaign as they have dubbed it. When they're talking to us about businesses, they're offering these businesses, which is anywhere between 5 and a hundred people, small to medium size. 10% off, a MacBook Pro is the latest 14 inch and 16 inch versions. If you buy 25 or more, then if you're buying between 5 units in 24 units, so anywhere between 5 and below 25, you're getting 8% off. Now, those are pretty much record discounts if you look at Apple small business and medium sized business programs. The typical discounts are anywhere between two and 5% and those discounts at the very high end. Those are typically reserved for the highest spenders of Apple. Now anyone with a business account on apple is able to get those 8 and 10% discounts. And about how much is each individual MacBook Pro? Yes, so the MacBook Pro ranges from anywhere between $2000 to about 3335 $100. There's even configurations that go between four and $6000. So it's quite a bit of savings when you're buying in bulk. And the interesting thing here is that when Apple disclosed its guidance non monetary guidance, but it's color based guidance for the holiday quarter. They said that the growth rate would be slower in Q one than Q four. So in the current quarter versus the previous quarter, in large part because there are new new MacBook pros coming out during this period while there were new MacBook pros launched in the October time frame of 2021. And so in order to keep those sales flowing despite there being no new model, they are resorting to some of these promotional deals. So it all lines up in my mind. All right, so it wasn't a huge surprise for you. I mean, they rarely resort to these types of promotional deals, right? So it was surprising in that standpoint. But it does affirm what Apple previously said in that the Mac is going to be a challenge this quarter. So what you're seeing is they're pulling out the stops doing everything they possibly can to mitigate that issue as much as possible in promotional deals like this one up to 10% off on bulk is a clear way to keep sales flowing, right? And let's say they get 10,000 companies to buy 25 machines at 10% off you are talking about a pretty good quarter here. All right. I mean, they still make money. So this doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the holiday season like this. This is not for someone who's just buying one. This is really going for these big buys. This is for bulk only. There are no abnormal discounts
