South Carolina uses size to overpower UCLA in March Madness

"Maryland advanced to the elite 8 for the first time in 8 years running away with a 76 59 win over Notre-Dame in the Greenville one regional of the NCAA women's basketball tournament. Cheyenne sellers and diamond Miller scored 18 points for the terrapins, lavender Briggs had 12 points off the bench. Marilyn next gets unbeaten South Carolina in Monday's elite 8. The gamecocks took down UCLA 59 to 43, Brie Beal was one of three South Carolina scores in double figures as she helped hold the bruins to under 30% shooting in the game. For games like this, you know, an offensive scoring is very low. We definitely rely on our defense to keep their scoring lower than ours. South Carolina is now 35 and oh, Josh rowntree AP sports.

"What an afternoon, it has been here in Baton Rouge. We will get to your phone calls in just a few minutes at 855-242-7285. We have one more guest, Chris doering, joining us from studio to get his thoughts on the biggest games of the weekend. Chris, thanks for the time. Always great to have you here. By the way, I felt badly for the other day. I saw some of the I saw some of the clips of that of your clown outfit. Nobody should have to do that. No matter what. In four years in a row, Paul, I can't get a win here. My Alma mater can't overcome LSU. Everybody's worried about beating Georgia. I'd rather worry about beating LSU. It's been more painful for me personally. I agree. Well, I will not make, I will not subject you to any more of that. But let's get to some of the games of the weekend. Really big one in Columbia. How about South Carolina visiting South Carolina hosting Texas a and M have at it? Yeah, it's an interesting matchup. Isn't it two teams coming off a buy and I honestly feel like a lot of people feel good and I'm scratching my head about this. Feel good because Texas a and M had a close near miss against Alabama before the biweek. I think they still have a lot of the same problems and that starts with the offensive line. We're unsure about who's going to go at quarterback, but conversely for South Carolina. I think he actually feel pretty good. They have won three games in a row. When last we saw them, they were physical on defense against Kentucky in the second half. The offense seemed to figure something out as well. They're getting the ball out of the hands of Spencer Rattler, getting into the playmakers around them and kind of minimizing what's a big deficiency for them, which has been their offensive line. I really feel like this is a game that South Carolina is going to break that streak against Texas a and M where they've lost the last 8 times since the aggies have joined the SEC. So I think the environment is going to be tremendous there in Colombia. And I think they're going to walk away with their first up against the aggies. Wow, that would be something to see. Chris Dorian with us. Let's get to Tuscaloosa. It's the bounce back game for Nick Saban. He does not lose these games and we're all interested in hearing what you think about state traveling to Brian Denny. Yeah, he doesn't lose these type of games and he doesn't lose games to Mississippi state. It's been a long time and we've talked an awful lot here this week about the air raid offense and what it's done against the other 13 teams in the SEC. They've averaged four and a half points in the last couple of outings against the Alabama defense. And the reason being is because the air raid offense requires that you drive 11, 12, 13 plays and not make a mistake during that sequence of plays. It's not a ton of big plays that they make in this Alabama defense. That's where they've been most susceptible. You go back and look last week. Tennessee was able to beat them over the top on multiple different occasions, including Jalen Hyatt doing the majority of the damage. I don't see the Mississippi state offense being able to do that. I do think it's an opportunity for them to bounce back. And if this Alabama team ever was able to be captivated by the attention of their head coach, it would have to be on the heels of 17 penalties on the heels of big plays explosive plays on defense, all of these different self inflicted wounds that cost them the game. So I know that this is one that we were looking forward to, but I think one because of where Alabama is coming off that loss to Tennessee and two with how poorly this Mike leech offense has done against Alabama's defense historically, I really don't think it's going to be much of a competitive game. Finally, where we are here in Baton Rouge as a Friday night is upon us. All myths travels to Tiger stadium to take on LSU. Yeah, Paul, how about a couple weeks ago, it seemed like the inconsistencies of LSU had really cost them their main goals this season. Here we are. Just a couple of weeks after they were blown out at home by Tennessee. And if they win this game, they will be atop the SEC west, which is kind of hard to believe. We saw Jaden Daniels down in Gainesville last week seemed to have the light come on for him, was effective not only running the ball where he has been as best this season, but throwing the football as well. He was tremendous on third downs, 8 of 9 passing on third downs for over a 170 yards, moved the chains 6 times there, completed one for a touchdown. So I feel like that they figured things out offensively and being able to utilize what's a very talented wide receiver room on the other side, you know, old myths has been putting up big numbers with the ground game. They seem to also be figuring things out through the air, Jackson dart seems to be in command of the offense, but I don't know that we have enough real concrete evidence of who this oldest team is. The schedule was soft in September, started getting into the conference schedule a little bit here during the month of October. But this is going to be the real test going into this environment. I think you're going to look at LSU's defense that's filled with athletic talented versatile defenders that is going to take away the run game and force Jackson dart to beat you. That'll be the key in this one. I don't think he will be able to consistently do that. That's why I'm going with the LSU tigers in this one. The LSU beats oldness here in Baton Rouge. Thank you, Chris, really appreciate it very much. You can catch more of Chris and the guys tomorrow night. Football final, ten 30 p.m. following that a and M and South Carolina again. We'll try to squeeze one or two more calls in here. Before we take the break and let's try cat daddy who I know is interested in that game tomorrow night in Colombia. What if

"Ben, let's talk about the former president committing espionage. Punchline is because the whole world might blow up. So now it's right? That's a funny ending. Look, I'm withholding my judgment on this Brie until I get the result until the eBay auction closes and I figure out if I do indeed win the nuclear secrets. I've been waiting. You know, I know we dealt with this as comedians for a long time. You and I have talked on happy hour and I swear about, oh, it must be, oh, you guys saw so much material. So funny, Trump. Oh my God, orange clown. And now we're like, okay, a long time ago, it passed like the not funny, funny, not funny, but this is, I don't even know how to get my head around what just has happened in the west a few days. The most insane and difficult to process part of it is not even just what he did. I don't think anyone is even stunned that Trump has done everything in probably 5 more egregious, horrible traders things will come out, but it's the increasing speed, the exponential growth in time that his followers, both, the lay people across the country and the people who are in power in our government currently on the GOP side. That just immediately lose their everything to defend this man. I mean, instantly, already like shadow of his father, moronic idiot. Rand Paul is merely comes on television and says, oh, the, espionage actors outdated, needs to be thrown out. I mean, what does Trump have on this guy?

"If you go into a meal with someone and think this person is gonna leave a meal and love Jesus. Can Jesus do that yes, but usually it's over time. And I think the reason it's over time is because we are not the savior. Jesus is the savior. And we are supposed to be responsive to the Holy Spirit. And we are supposed to show up and love like Jesus did invite people's stories into our lives like Jesus did and show compassion. Brie McCoy is with us today on focus on the family and your host is focused president and author Jim Daly. I'm John fuller. Let me ask the listener. Have you often thought about Jesus sitting at tables while he was on earth? I mean, it's so much of his ministry was around a meal. If you think about it, he met with sinners and ate with them and drank with them and he was criticized for that. Even the last supper. There is so much related to God interacting with us as human beings around mealtime. And we think it's important. Here it focus on the family. We exist to help strengthen your family. That's our goal. And I think we have a key for you today because so much of what Jesus did to model this on earth we should be doing as well. And a lot of it's right around eating together. Yeah, and right now we're sitting at a table. Ironically, without food. That's a good thing. Hey, can I have coffee potatoes? Yeah. In our guest is Brie McCoy and Brie has written a great book. It's full of stories and recipes and encouragement for you to do what we're talking about here. It's called come and eat a celebration of love and grace around the everyday table. Brie, welcome to focus on the family. Thank you so much for having me. Hey, let me say right from the beginning. Thanks for the contribution, the sacrifice of you and your husband. He's in the military, right? Yes. And we are grateful for that. Thank you so very much. Thank you so much. That must write their create some difficulty. I mean, that's an unplanned schedule for him. How do you, how do you work around that just saying you're not going to be home for dinner tonight? How do you fight that temptation to be upset after you've made such a wonderful meal? Well, in the beginning, I didn't fight that temptation..

"Okay, it's okay, it's okay, it's okay, it's okay. Like a noise. Okay, no, please, no more noises. Please, no more noises, please. Okay. I know, I know, I know. These kids, the other day, I was putting her to sleep. And I thought I bet and she goes, oh, you didn't do my smells. I said, what? She was, I need my smells. And then she points, and Brie has like this sleep mist. Before kids, I'm like, aw, it's adorable. I like my smells. Then I'm trying to teach her her manners, right? She's like, daddy, you know, get me a milk. I go, what's the magic word? She goes, abracadabra. That's true. It's a good point. Yeah, that is a magic abracadabra. I was laughing. I was laughing so hard. Then I go downstairs, upstairs, I got to get her milk, right? And I checked my phone and I hear, I don't hear any pouring. This kid has no fear of me. You know, I used to fear your parents at some point. You know, I never yelled at her. Like, I've never like that was probably violent. I mean, I don't know if some parents believe in spanking. I don't. I'm never gonna have to, maybe I'll hold her wrist or something, and be like, no. But I would never, that's just not me. I don't want to ever have to raise a hand to, you know? But, you know, there's a look. If I give her, I've given her a look. And then she started crying. You know, like, but is this all a matter of time for she realizes that that look means nothing too, you know? What about you? Have you ever spanked your kid?.

"Think there's a new era in the landscape world and in part, it's driven by the labor shortage and that the way we currently maintain landscapes does require a lot of human hours and that just might not be the reality of the future. Instead of trying to maintain a mulch bed and make it weed free, perhaps just cover that bed with plants. And then you won't have to worry about problem plants getting established and having a staff that's their constantly pool weeds or spray weeds or even applying preemergent. I think green mulch is likely going to be something that is totally normalized in the next 20 years. And I just would love to see that food is a part of that process. I think a lot of the green mulch approach is trying to engage the ground plane with native plants that would provide habitat and better ecological services than is currently represented in the average landscape. And I see food is just being hand in hand with that because humans are also a part of these communities. The more food that we can grow locally, the better. Why not try and grow something that can be consumed right along with native plants and ornamental plants? As our building lots or places that we live have become smaller, this seems like a perfect solution for producing food. That's exactly it. The way we develop now, there just isn't room for a segregated vegetable garden. That was certainly what drove me, didn't have enough sun in my backyard to isolate my vegetables where no one could see them. I think more and more that's just the case is lots are what an 8th of an acre or even smaller, but you might want to grow a handful of vegetables that you want to eat. Just incorporating them into those beds that exist.

"And I can share not only the harvest with people, but I can share the experience of growing that and encourage other people to grow plants that are very practical. And that way it really shakes out that you've done something that makes it different. I know you've talked a little bit about the plants that you grow in. What are the good plants to grow together? It's kind of funny every year. I keep coming up with new combinations and actually started really simply. I found that broccoli and encore azaleas did really, really well together. I will frequently grow tomatoes next to panic or hydrangeas, things like limelight hydrangea, I'll actually use the structural integrity of those summer flowering deciduous shrubs to actually grow tomatoes up through. Then no one knows that I have a tomato planted there until they see the ripe fruit dangling and had countless neighbors ask me how I get by hydrangeas to fruit tomatoes. It's like another blanket. It's like an ornament. Exactly. Like, oh my gosh, did you grab the tomato? I'll do a hydrangea. It's much simpler. I found it growing things direct from seed, things like kale and mustard greens in arugula at the base of something like a knockout rose. It gives that knockout rose extra interest because you have this beautiful living ground cover that you can also harvest. I haven't really found any combination that didn't work other than when an ornamental plant is really quite vigorous or in the case of an edible plant like something like a pumpkin. Pumpkins take over a lot of room. They don't have a problem climbing over trees and shrubs, either. I actually do grow pumpkins in mass. I usually harvest somewhere between a hundred and a 150 fruit annually. They do sort of grow in harmony with different trees and shrubs growing over things like deciduous magnolias. Yoshino krypton. Different lagosta varieties. They don't actually smother the plants, but there is a moment where you think this looks a little crazy. I usually encourage people to grow more conventional plants that way you'll never have that moment where you feel like things are out of control. And that's where really evaluating what you eat on a regular basis is so practical. This past summer I did some really beautiful displays using various things like zucchini and yellow squash. I used those essentially mixed with zinnias and basil all combined along with things like encores..

"Everybody's got this height on this quarterback. And he can't throw to these balls, not accurate. He can throw it. AVR. But he can't get a receiver. And we look at her secondary. But that's what happened in halfway through the Florida game. Was there no one figured it out? And he knew he didn't have to worry about the default. Thanks for saying a.m. that has to worry about the big balls. They came out from alaba gate. That's the reason they can start from 6 7 8 in the box. And they make very young even with his arm. He's not capable of hitting that question. He's passed. And I'll hang up and listen. Yeah, by the way, it's a pretty good analysis. Ali is up next in Memphis. Hey, Al. Hey, Paul, good to talk to you, buddy. Thank you. I just need a quick thing on your concept of coach. It keeps giving these excuses, and always kind of stuff. Yeah, he's a great guy. And all this kind of stuff, but look at his record when he was at old miss. I mean, it's beginning to show what his coaching abilities is. Is that correct? Well, I think he is, one thing about. He's more of a CEO coach than he is a play caller. He was a line coach and a really good one. Yeah. So he's not a coordinator, so he doesn't make the calls. And what you need him to do is make really good decisions on coaches. And I don't think he's done that. He did it early on. I'm trying to remember for Randall was part of less miles Stafford not. I can't remember. But he was. I think he was, yeah. I thought he was. So I thought he really showed himself last year when he brought in boat paulini. It was a bad decision. And I'm not sure it's gotten any better. Now he has been as Brie said. He's been engulfed in injuries, but who hasn't? Maybe nobody to his degree. But that's not going to ultimately you have to make a decision. And it's my thought you can't wait too long to make this decision. You have to look for the trendline, and that's why the Florida game and the old miss game are so critical because well that's what I mean, that's what he was talking about when they interviewed him at halftime. We got to quit throwing a ball to the tailbacks. We got a quit doing this. Well, it never changed. No. No. He does. He does a couple of things every year. He oversells his team, he almost sounds a little bit like a high school coach at the opening pepper alley. And then fans start buying in. And ultimately, these things catch up to him and you can't argue with the record. And he's losing games. He should not be losing. He should not have lost the auburn game. The Kentucky game should have lost. He should not have lost a UCLA game. And he adds on top of that, a little bitty things that rub people the wrong way. And quite frankly, it doesn't matter whether you're from the same parish as he is or you love his accent, or you love the story. I think everyone does, that's not going to that's not going to save his job. We're up against a break. We are coming back with much, much more. We'll head down to Gainesville and a few minutes. Excuse me. But anyway, point out try to make this oberman. I mean, it goes well issue. He's got open target of something. And this guy this guy's a good coach. He's LSU throwing true. And unless you've got a short little temper, I think. They don't see the have compassion for their coaches very much. You know what I mean? I mean, you got to go with the injuries, you got to go in situations. You got to go with your schedule. And this guy has worked his tail off for the tigers. You know what I mean? I mean, I'm in. We don't get to ever miss you guys getting asked to see. But we get information. But I didn't realize they had that many injuries. My goodness. Nobody talks about that. All they talk about is fire over it. I mean, I don't get it. Steve, I hate to interrupt you, but have you watched all of this year? I saw I saw a couple of games. They had no defense and their offense was very limited too. They're not a very good football team. But they are hurt. They lost the first game before they started getting banged up, even though they did lose their starting quarterback before the season. Well anyway, I appreciate your call. You have a great day. Thanks for being here. And let's check in with Tim, who is in Athens, a hello Tim. Hey, Paul, how are you doing? We're doing great. You know, I'm surprised that I was surprised that game day is going back to Athens. This would be their third showing for the bulldogs this year. That's unheard of. Yeah, well, they did the first game in Charlotte. I will say this game day has gone back to the same place before during a season, but I don't think they've ever gone back within two weeks. Right. And also, your show's going to be there. SEC nation. Right. And Marty and McGee, I mean, what's your proximity to where they're setting up at the quad? Not that close. We've done shows from the quad before, and I believe we're nowhere near there. We're going to be at the special collections library, which is closer to the stadium. Right. Okay. And I was wondering since they're both SE or ESPN based programs or are you guys planning on sharing host or cast or I'm not really planning on doing anything? Other than our show Friday and the SEC show Saturday gotcha. So do you know the record for who's had the most game days in a year? I'm sure it's Alabama. Yeah, I know Alabama has had it twice. I think I heard somewhere somebody told me this the other day that southern Cowell once had at least two maybe three. But this is almost every year. Yeah, I mean, the year I travel with game day, which was before the network started, we went to Florida state twice, which was really an excuse me. Not Florida state twice. We went to Clemson twice, we were there for the opening weekend. Then we went there for the Florida state game. That's what I was thinking about. And that was in twice in 7 weeks, which I thought was pretty pretty bizarre. A lot of it depends on circumstances. I'm just guessing here that game day was probably going to Cincinnati this week. You thought they would have a really big game with UCF and then UCF is just simply imploded. So it hurt that game. And otherwise, LSU, Florida, we've been a game they would normally look at, didn't happen. Maybe mister be state, Alabama, and then Alabama law. So there were a lot of good choices. There are not many good games this weekend. I think is the only way to solve that puzzle. I mean, I actually went out and looked at it and trying to project whether we're going to go and I didn't see any good games either. I remember Saturday morning when we were in Lexington, we were talking about we were always going to the Georgia Kentucky game and somebody mentioned that game day was looking at and am I going, there's no way they can do that twice. And two weeks. And they did. Because they it was either going to I'm pretty sure it was going to be they were they had Cincinnati penciled in. I don't know why they backed out on Cincinnati because it's still a pretty good place to go considering their number three in the country. Right. And they almost every year go to the SEC championship game. So that would be a four game. Yeah. Yeah, they don't look at it that way. I mean, they probably would primarily look at Alabama's included in game days a lot, whether it's home or away. But it's primarily being on the campus. That's the key thing. Neutral site because we've been at Alabama, we were at the Alabama Miami game. We were the Florida Alabama game. So it's really more about where the game is, not how many times the team is involved. Outlaw is up next to good afternoon. Hi. Hey there, I just have a I want to make about can you hear me? I sure can. But I just want to make a really analysis about the Alabama football team. I'm a big fan and I watched just about every game. But after about the second game of the season, I didn't have a big problem..

"Listening again to coach O talk about the health of his team and his job status. Brie Andrew Sean just used a sports director of Tiger TV down in battenberg. Thank you very, very much. What a complicated story of the system to follow. Before we get to coach, let's talk about the health of this team because I swear every time I look up, another key player has gone down. Yeah, you know, I was getting ready to come on today and this morning. And I heard that Eli rix is out for the rest of the season, which is a big blow to our routine, Derek's thing we just had surgery. We don't know his return date, Kay Sean but he's out for the rest of the year. So it's Andre Anthony. So it's both sides of the ball that they're really struggling, which is so disappointing for the amount of talent that's on this team. Brie, this the Florida game is always huge. We know the intensity of the rivalry between both schools. This game is at 11 a.m., not a preferred starting time. Can you tell us what the mood is on that campus about this particular game? Yeah, you know, Florida's always a big game, especially after last year with the shoe game and then the year before that, when electric game that was, honestly, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had inside your stadium in 2019. But the mood is different. We're not having the season we expected. I said it last time I come on the show with Peter burns. You know, I was hyping them up. I was expecting a really good season. We were projected 7 and three, but it's just not looking that way so far in the injuries, you know, don't help our situation. People are frustrated. Fans are frustrated. Just things I've heard, we have one of my reporters doing MOS story asking students around campus what they felt about the team and students are upset. They're frustrated, fans alike. I think that they will pull through everyone who is an LSU fan, always roots for them and wants to want them to win. And I want that good success of this team. I'm working the game so I'll be out there bright and early on the field. So I think it'll be an exciting one. You know, they can surprise us. They can show out for us and the people that are going to step in for our players that are injured can really have their time to shine and show out and possibly make this game really competitive if not pull out a win. Let's talk about the reality of the situation and everything I'm about to say, you already know, and so does every student on that campus, but we all know the record since Joe burrow and all those great coaches left. We know coach O is struggling, he lost last week. He's an underdog to Florida, the next games are incredibly difficult with all this in Alabama, Arkansas, Texas a and M later on, what's the realistic situation down there? I mean, is there a sense on that campus that he is about to go? Yeah, and with the man on the street story that one of my reporters said yesterday it was kind of a mixed opinion from other students. Some people are saying, you know, Coachella has done his time. He's a good recruiter. He's a good hype man, but maybe he's not a head coach. That's what I heard from one of the students and someone else said, you know, we just need to let him go. Someone else said, let's let him wait out for the rest of the year. You know, we just want a national championship, not even not even a full two years ago. So I think he deserves that much, they said. So I think coach means a lot to the state of Louisiana. I'm born in for a Louisiana coach and I are from the same parish. So he needs a lot to the culture and no one wants to see this team fail. Coach more than anyone who said it on Monday and his past conference that he knows that else you say in the performance he lives it. He more than anyone wants this team to do the best that they can. But I think Scott Woodward will make the right decision in this case in this matter. So I guess we'll just have to wait and take it game by game and week by week and see what happens. That part of what you just said is so interesting because in being in Lexington the other day, I was around a lot of LSU fans like you are every day. And they all feel the same way. They love this guy, but they don't, they're wondering if you can get the job done. In fact, the fans I was talking to. I wasn't talking to students. I was talking to people that paid good money to fly to Lexington and stay in hotels. They felt like as much as they love him, he wasn't going to survive. I know that there's a difficult dichotomy to try to digest and differentiate, but what gives here, do you think? You know, and I thought about this since this season started, we have talented guys. We've had a top recruiting class within the last few years, especially since coach was taken over. He's such a great recruiter. We've had a top record in class. It's not that our guys aren't talented or our guys can't do what they're supposed to do to win games. I'm not a coach. I'm not a player. I really don't know what goes on in that facility. Whenever the media is not around, that is not transpiring once the field during game time situations. But I think that it's very strange how we went from 15 to one of the greatest seasons ever in college football and now we're between two seasons. We're 8 and 8. And it's frustrating to fans. It really is. It's frustrating to come from such a high and go down to such a low. But I think that we're just going to have to ride out the storm. I don't think the program itself is in jeopardy. I don't think that our guys are bad by any means. I think we're very talented as a team. We're stacked with top recruits every single year. But something I think has to give something has to come to light that some things need to change and the programs and things need to change and the staff to get back to a top ranked program because it's not like LSU football is never been a powerhouse. We've been our powerhouse for as long as I can remember. I've watched LSU football my whole life. We've always been a powerhouse and it's just very lackluster for the past two years..

"The pride passion and pageantry of college football lives here. This is the qualifying bomb show hour two podcast. Is second hour is here and we appreciate all of you joining us all. We'll get some more calls before we head to back rouge Craig. Is calling next. Good afternoon, Craig. Hey, Paul, how are you doing? Very well. Thanks. Huge fan of show. Use Georgia fan. I just want to talk about Kirby smart. And he gives a lot of bad slack. I listen to king Kentucky talk about him on Facebook weekend. And you know, even in myself as a Georgia fan and early on, I thought, maybe he should win right away. And what it was happening there was a maturing as a coach. Kirby, when he first came in, it wasn't a mature coach. And that was the years I've noticed that he has matured tremendously. And this year, we might not win a next game, but he has mature as a coach. I don't see what you think about that. I think he is. Morphed into a phenomenal coach and I think the first year it was a learning curve. But after that, I think he's been off and running. And I've never really doubted him. So I'm glad to hear you say that, but I totally agree and we will talk to coach smart Friday afternoon when we are in Athens. Thank you for the call. Taylor is in Florida. Hello, Taylor. Taylor,.

"Brie. And I think that the one thing, Tom that it frustrates me a little bit. I get communications behind the scenes. Uh, about you know, people on this radio station. Why are you having people while you're encouraging people to become vaccinated my position and I know the position of J. Weber and I'm not sure about the others is that Vaccination is a choice to mitigate the severity of disease, and I think that's all it's good for. I don't think it's effective, you know, and any significant level necessarily of preventing the transmission of the virus. I just I mean, we're seeing too much breakthrough data from from countries that had fairly high levels of percentages of vaccination. The most notable one is Israel. Where about 85% of the eligible population. Was vaccinated. They're giving, you know a spike in cases and infections and hospitalizations. Uh, nonetheless, and it's my point. Is this that the only reason I got vaccinated was I didn't want to end up in the hospital. I think I mean, if that's your rationale, I supported if you if there's an employer out there who thinks somehow that having all of his employees getting vaccinated is going to mitigate the spread or the exposure of this virus in that workplace. They're just wrong. There's no data that that says that that, you know, having everybody vaccinated keeps the virus away. That's that's my point. Exactly. Why don't we follow the science? You know it just like the Democrats say my body, my decisions, my body. My choice, and Joe Biden's case is your Body. His choice. And I mean, just think about a frightening that is Joe Biden gets to make a decision about what I do with my body. Yeah, I kick was is a guy who can't walk up the steps. By the way. Is he ever going to take another, uh, non scripted question? He does this. What did he do? 30 minutes on this yesterday He's walk away, Jo. He turns away. He's got it down, though you guys spins on his on his on his heels and walks in the opposite direction. You know, wherever they tell them to whoever made a great point. Did you hear the audio were Biden was reading off the prompter and said Well, now I'm supposed to, uh, stop talking and leave well, and anybody who's been in TV or around T. V and J pointed this out because J used to do like some overnight news things when he was the news guy. Um, that producers will put stage direction. On your teleprompter, You know, you know how you win Applause or, you know or or where, or when to, you know, wait for the sting, You know of a of a of an intro or That sort of thing. I think whatever pointed this out, I wish we could confirm this. I think they put on the tele project for Joe turn around and walk away and he just kept reading. He was just reading stuff off the teleprompter, and he didn't realize that was stage direction. You know, maybe that it was the same color in the same font is the speech or whatever he was he was talking about. Anyway, I think it was relatively remarkable. I think my best line in this hour was that if Joe Biden had been George W. Bush and Biden had had to walk through the rubble and address, you know, so inspirational address the Newton, the New Yorkers and the rest of the country that he couldn't have done it because they couldn't get his teleprompter and through the rubble. It just It would be like a guy with cue cards. They know he couldn't climb on the rebel. No, Maybe they Maybe they put them on one of those cherry pickers. You know, they just just lower them down. Yeah. Okay. What do we do in the next hour? Paul here, Let me tell you, Um, I think that there's a smoking gun on Tony Fauci that he lied. We'll talk a little bit about that. I said made reference, and this will be all in the short first segment. Um There's a new round of mask ninny is, um, that there's about to burst out and you know we're to wrap up the covid part of the show. We need to have some level of rational acceptance with regard to living with covid because it ain't going any place and I'll explain myself when we get to that point. "Two paul is the phone number. Always like to hear from people who disagree with me and it's not my wife. Believe it or not this time. It's eddie in florida. What's up eddie. Welcome to the paul finebaum. Show burnsville name. What's up special. Peter and you hear on a roll type paying disagree with you. Peter trying to make a name for yourself no man. Is that what you're trying to do. Hey first of all. I hear come on in predict georgia in texas. Am and sec. Championship gang here. The old coach today talk about Florida's gonna beat alabama week three and then compadres. A on on. Saturday is really billy barry. I'll i'll i'll say that dewey barrett that is Gonna go undefeated. Are you trying to make a name for yourself against alabama Gonna happen. Peter jackson man all right. So why. why are you so confident that it is just wash. rents repeat from alabama. I'm willing to hear this conversation. And alan and go with it. It doesn't work anymore okay. That's what i'm gonna do all right nick. Sabin hence proven to me. You're me here. Everybody talking about what we lost to the nfl. We that i'm gonna tell you this it's going to be the same time began different last night. That sounds like a pill in house anymore. You have to go with the hand right. Has nick sailing teams into any balls. That that that that he can't go one twelve and one. The next year after he lose a lot of players that are in nfl and he did it happen in two thousand nineteen. I don't know how many games to write. I don't recall them being in the sec champion. I mean you just make it sound like any that this is impossible. It just happened two years ago. That alabama didn't even make the the the sec championship game. So this is not a something that never happened before in the history of college football and saying they make the sec champion small for you right a show storming beat us and i just don't see i just don't see us not be in the championship this year. I wish don't see all the young guys we feed it and all the young we think it. Let's check these. You're talking about bill. O'brien right Y'all keitel's got that resurrected pay state. He'll die wet t for the nfl coach and gm. And all you gonna ask him to do peter. Paul planes tall place teeters. That's the only dog. He got calibrate. You things he's going to be looking at sock obama and came back. You see how one when he came home working again and i'm with you i mean again i'm with you and the fact that do i think that floor is going to be an no. I think steve spurrier's wrong when he says that right. i don't think florida beats alabama. I should say not. dm so i. I don't agree with steve spurrier. If he says that the gators are going to be time. No listen you guys know. I've always been transparent. I was born and raised in the shadows of tiger stadium diehard. Lsu fan right. I don't think lsu beats alabama this year. But what i am saying. Is that just think that it's the same thrown just new dragons every single year. Okay we're talking about over. The last four years has been to atlanta twice just twice so let's not think that it's automatically wash rinse repeat it can happen. I'm not going out there. Periodic statement a couple of years ago. That said that alabama was going to lose. What four games right. And they were going to be so out of mind that they would lose five games this. Because i didn't understand what he had built. This is not saying alabama's dynasties over this has me thinking that if texas am and any years can get it. This would be the year because of of what alabama has lost real quick logan north carolina. What's happening logan here. Love your show i love. I love everything you do on the air. But you're totally wrong about alabama. I gotta say it man i. Well i guess the alabama fan. The odds are against this. We're probably going to lose one of these one of these days. So you know it wasn't a you're going out on a limb saying eighty. I was going to be this year because we got to play them there. So i just don't see it happening though If we come back as strong as we have been. I just don't see it. So what what do you see that you think that they're going to beat us. That's what i wanted to to me. I look in these. Are the question marks that i have for alabama right. It's not a matter of. Do they have enough players right. The the jimmy's and jobs are never going to change. They again the the amount of seven star recruits that alabama has. What i mean is that i am curious about. The coaching of this team is when you lose so much and to me when i look at what texas and then was on the brink of last year. And i like the play calling jimbo fisher and now jimbo fisher has a kid in hanes king that i think can take it to next level. That has a next level like. That's that's what i think is the difference right now with these teams so again. This is nothing that you know when it comes down to it that i looked at that. Alabama is going to struggle right. That's a full errand to say that they will never struggle right but will they be better than texas and who better to ask them. Billy lucci from tech sags. He'll join us next. Am i off base. Maybe agree maybe disagree. Peter barnes in for paul..

"E. s. p. in it was great because sankey kinda was just talking along the lines of. Hey listen you know that whole alliance and everybody's upset about when the college football playoff expansion. It went all the way back to twenty eighteen. Twenty nineteen so their idea of what was kind of this whole diabolical plan necessarily. Didn't quite meet the facts. Eight five five four. Two paul is the phone number but a great guest. Now as we get back to school we go in and my neck of the woods down in baton rouge. Bree andress is Joining us right now and breach so many questions to talk about. And i'm so happy that you're joining us. Let's go with the biggest thing right now. What does it feel like on campus. Now that we're starting to get kids back on on campus and we're what what nine days away from. The first football game being played by lsu over ucla campus is back so much as it can be We are. We have a lot of in person classes. I have a But we do have hybrid options in online options for those students who feel comfortable. I think our president nine ministration is doing everything they can by getting people vaccinated making sure people mask and taking all the necessary precautions because i think myself included i think tiger fans everywhere wants to be integral stadium with a hundred thousand of their closest friends. You know so. We wanna have that energy and we only need to in the safest way possible and i think that everyone in charge is doing everything that they can bring. I think that's interesting. 'cause got woodward talked about that right like part of football down in the south and not just baton rouge but everywhere. It's kind of like football faith and family right. Nobody has it better than kind of tailgating in down in baton rouge With that being said how the students in the people around it reacting to the news that they will require a vaccine or at least a negative. Pcr test to attend a game at tiger stadium. How much will affect tendency believe. I think tiger fans are really die. Hard I've been a higher life. I've always been die hard. I think you know people have difference of opinion about the back seen about the pandemic in general but if that's what it takes to get a vaccine or to get tested seventy two hours before the game. I think that's what tiger fans are gonna do that way. They can go in there and cheers lot as they can for the team and hopefully get to Another national championship. I think we can't do it. Without the band's. I went to a game last year when there was limited capacity and the energy was just. It was like nine days. It was so different. So i think having all those fans are going to help the team more coaches as it all the time that the tv's off their energy. So i think having them all in there in if that's what we do is to get vaccinated and semaska. I think fans will play their part. Br how long you been in. Lsu football fan. I'm twenty years old going on twenty one so probably about twenty years all right so going back in and look at it and now you get an opportunity to do that in. What was the biggest step from you. Going from a fan in four years old to twelve years old to now twenty two going on twenty one in covering it. What is what has been the biggest difference in working on this side of the camera as opposed to just being a fan and covering the game. I think being a fan covering the team that you love it helps you. It makes you love what you do even more. I came to lsu for this program that we had four tiger tv in for the opportunities that i can get here and also four the sports team. I mean we're a school. We learn alive do a lot of education but this is a sports school basketball football baseball gymnastics. Like we're like some. We're the best in the country. I believe so going from that and be able to cover that. From being a non-bias media perspective has been a learning experience. But also it's been really fun. I've gotten a covered the my very first boarding experience covering a game was lsu. Bama twenty nineteen. In brian any stadium. We broke the eight year. Curse of losing to bama so that was a surreal moment in getting to talk to coach weekly in press conferences and getting to meet everyone that i get to meet have all the opportunities like this is something that's unmatched and i wouldn't trade it for the world so being a fan makes me love what i do more interesting because you know when old guys like me. I'm forty two years old. Double your age and i'm sitting here in charlotte. North carolina at our sec network studios and talk about name image and likeness. And all the things that are changing your boots on the ground and baton rouge and you're interacting with these student athletes in your amongst them every single day name image and likeness are everybody outside of our world. Know guys like me making this to be too big of a deal or have you seen a big change with that on campus. You know personally. I know some of the guys and stuff and i know that they do have a endorsements and stuff and i think it really helps them Boosts their confidence. Because you know they're like i'm putting in all of this work in practice encamped putting all these games and now it's paying off for me financially I know they weren't able to do that in the past so now seeing them in it also helps local businesses as well walk on raising. Cane's i know those a kind of bigger but The smaller companies that reach out into endorsement deals with them. I think it helps businesses a lot. So i think it's a win win situation you guys get To get paid for the hard work that they put an end. Their named engineer lightness and also the businesses around the baggage area. Get their promotion as well. My last question for you. You follow this team You talked about twenty nineteen. There was a buzz around this team in twenty nineteen twenty twenty different We weren't on campus. What's the buzz around this team. And how good candidate you know. That is a great question. I have thought about this team. Alive compared to twenty eighteen season We have a lot of guys coming back. We have a lot of veterans on his team in the orelon is all coming back. I do think that they need to work on the depth in the line because all the guys that we have no line on second team haven't had as much experience as first team. I think You know if elias ricksen and derek stanley junior stay healthy. They'll be the biggest threat at cornerback in the country. Both of them together. I think durant. John's coming in and bringing in some of his. Nfl experience to the bend especially that secondary will help out a lot because we know that the secondary didn't do as well as they usually do as the last year so I think that's great. And honestly i love max johnson as a quarterback i think he's a balti- move around but he moves around well in the pocket. He gets the ball. He moved with his feet. Well so i would like to see him just excel and then the wide receiver. Core is insane the freshman that we have our unstoppable of seeing them in camp and they have done amazing things also the running backs and no people have been concerned about the running backs. Well are two men guys. I david price and john emery Of them but you also have to look at those freshmen. That we have are great. They are corey. Kinder amar amartya would like they are outstanding..

"Lsu football lsu in vegas in twenty twenty four. Two of the nation's powerhouse programs will kick off. The allegiant are off the season at allegiance stadium. So this is hilarious to me right. I'm fired up for this. Lsu guy born and raised in baton. Rouge i'm still upset at two thousand three where they tried to claim a national title. When it was lsu and nick sabin squad that actually won the title that year. So this'll be part of that matchup but now think about it on. Lsu schedule they play usc and ucla right. So you've got two of the pack twelve alliance teams already as non conference games for the sec. Now mind you remember. The pac twelve just came up with this whole alliance with the acc and the big ten. Like wait. We're gonna work on scheduling. We're going to all schedule each other. The big bad sec. Meanwhile the most powerful brand in the pac twelve which is southern cow. What they were doing all while the alliance was having this big lake Fraternity party of these three conferences. They were planning a game against lsu here in this conference and the only ones right there already ucla. It's amazing to me. It just absolutely amazing to me. Maybe the only thing. That's amazing is a fact that someone says that alabama could be underrated this year. God i love the show. Buff is an alabama. Thanks for joining peter. Birds you're saying the tighter underrated this year. Both will i really new england they. Are you know alice. Talk about the lives and in texas. And no you can. We don't hear more about alabama 'cause. I'll think that i mean nick. Saving is the greatest of all time How can we don't hear more about alabama about all this other stuff. But we don't hear nothing about alabama that is that is fair when you start looking at the amount of disrespect that alabama has and the lack of really media coverage that they've had especially here on the paul finebaum show buff. I think you're right. Could this be asleep or team. You think buff. I mean i know that sixty five or so of the sixty eight votes voted him number one despite missing their quarterback in a couple wide receivers in like everybody in the coaching staff. But they truly the most underrated team in college football. Well i'm going on past performance. Man and mix saving his loss coaches and lost star layers and he has always bounced back. let's talk about more about alabama. I'm buff you. You need to tell me you're you're the one you said. You want to talk more about alabama so tell me why are they so underrated this year because they lost so many players All their top players went to the nfl How you don't think i Nick saving those. He's proven it time and time again. That's why i think our underrated buff. Thank you for the phone call again. I'm not quite sure if being number one in the coaches poll being number one in like ninety five percent of the associated press poll. Despite all the question marks they have is is underrated if it is. That's truly the most underrated team in mind. Mind-blowing i've ever seen but maybe that's the mentality that nick sabin wants them to have down there matt. The to ten in san antonio mild stomping grounds were fired up for hanes downton abbey vitas people year. He might under a mainly. You know what. We'll come visit. And i wanted to ask you a question. Yes met When he come back on the show. I can't stand that guy. Matt what are you. What do you dislike. More gem in In the city that shall not be named or university of texas. Which one do you prefer less Equally boat right. That would be back to this. Show middle all. You want to show the political. Show your thursday to you anywhere diaper. Go look for matt san antonio as always thank you for the phone call Let's go to college station lane. I assume it's not kiffin but lanes in college station wants to talk a little aggies. What's up laying manjeet here. How are you doing today. a man you know what. I played golf earlier today. I'm living life and i'm hosting the finebaum show. I'm literally living the dream today. So that's a dream to shocking kinda live somebody doing good now. Feeder up to kind of take a shot and matt while ago Did it in two thousand twelve. With johnny helping richard freshman. I'm gonna predict now eight. It'd be battle. And i gotta feeling stuff fourth quarter. Oh coming so take that one in his bank cash out the lane so we started looking at this and again i. I was with gene chizik yesterday when we hosted. Sec now or earlier this week. And i said that i thought. Hey listen why. Not hanging them over alabama right. Sorry buff know this. This plays into your alabama's the underdog type mentality. But i looked at the quarterback situation right. Bryce showing hanes king. Yeah i've seen bryce a little bit more mop up duty. But that's all i've seen right. It hasn't seen him as starting quarterback in a bunch of times. So i think at that point. It's kind of the same situation running back situation between what you got and spillover an ice smith. I think that they might be just a smidge. More talented than alabama and. I liked. Brian robinson right. I think you'll be great with bell cow running back form but i think i give that to edge to am for wider meyer and billingsley wider. Meyer a little bit. Better eight chain. I think texas might have slightly better wide receivers now. I don't think that there's a doubt the offensive line with ever. Neil and company is better for alabama but then we go play calling. I don't know what bill o'brien's play calling is going to be like week one. I know what it's going to be like for jimbo fisher so i give a slight edge over to texas the other side of the ball i think. Am's better secondary wise. But i think obama is better when it comes down to their linebacker and defensive line. Play right this might be the best linebacking core that save has had and surely saying something some of the stuff that he's had in the nfl so to me. If i look at all of these factors right. And i see that jimbo has not backed down to alabama. In fact he wants that challenge. They were close last year as far as the least winning. A bunch of games can the difference. Be kyle field on october. The ninth when they play. I think that's the difference. Eight five five two four. Two paul is a phone number. Well you say his name and he will appear jim. Welcome in to the paul. Finebaum show how you doing. I didn't know you were bigger issue. I really didn't know that all kinds of shocking all today here on the finebaum show. Yeah well it's good to see you but you know you're not what day shared in the Dean of the staff the dean of all talk show and everything on.

"A story at some point in time. Yeah i mean you do have to give some details. But i think the feeling is the most important thing or it is to me. I think that's across. Mediums is like what feeling are you trying to evoke. And how do you get there. I was thinking a lot about working working on a screenplay. Right now that sort of reinforces the idea. And we know this in most forms of writing but it feels especially important in screenwriting and in play writing which is say what you mean without ever actually saying it so instead of having a character say i'm super scared in hero bunch of details. Y like it's a you can have just the state. Destruction of seeing his hands shake as he picks up a letter off of a desk. Yeah i mean it's that that's sort of like the screenwriting one at one right like the show. Don't tell thing yeah An example that you hear a lot like an film school i mean. There's a lot of these examples. But one i really like is from ordinary people the film. There's a scene where mary tyler. Moore's characters making french toast for her son and key doesn't want the french toast and she throws it in the garbage disposal. And it's this beautiful sort of like. Obviously it's not about french toast. It's about her trying to reconnect their son. He is rejecting her and she has these. You know bottled up emotions. That are coming out. And so that's what the scene is about. You know i'm so it's yeah it's things like that thinking about. How does saving behavior of character is much more revealing than any description of a feeling or any line of dialogue at they can have and that's much shorter idea the french toast on the garbage disposal. It's so much shorter idea. It's a much shorter seen and so much more visceral and compelling seen two characters talk about their feelings right although in real life like. That's a really good thing to do. You should just talk about your feelings. Like i think this is what we're fighting about right now and get through that. Surely but that's a really boring story absolutely. Yeah i love the puzzle. Lie quality to these limitations like janine. I always playing with that. With within the wires of just trying to not say exactly what's going on and just to play in a feeling for a while not the characters feelings but just an aura of some general idea and have somebody tried to you. Know the listener just to willingly go along with that Defined this can be frustrating. Though i i sometimes do i will read a book and i'm like oh you're spending a long a long time in this mood and i would like to know more about how this couples doing. Yeah i mean it certainly can be frustrating totally depends on the execution. It can totally the opposite. You know it can be super engaging the audience or the listener is now trying to sort of figure things out for themselves there again like filling in those gaps using their imagination more and trying to figure out the unspoken that you're laying out so i think that it can. It can go either way. Depending on how it's executed owes thinking about the peter straub quote the horror writer. I don't have the actual quotes paraphrase. But he basically just said if you want to if you wanna make the reader scared just say that your characters scared no more no less if you say that it give you that feeling. I think there's a lot more to what he's saying than just that. But i like the simplicity sometimes of just sometimes it is best in a short sentence to say this is exactly what's happening right now yes. This person is scared. We can provide a lot of other details. But here's that. I think i have agree with that. I think again coming from a screenwriter background. This is like drilled into me. But it's like don't say character is but show that a character scared. Just find some behavioral thing. That will signify that. I think is more always going to be more powerful than saying this person feels this thing right. Yeah because it's yeah. It's this this show don't tell is always is always the classic standby Yeah i i completely agree with that. It's sort of jarring when somebody just says what it is that they want. You have the the austin powers austin powers you know one million dollars or whatever like this is the demand it's the ransom for whatever this character ones but the the i want statement usually sort of buried in a lot of other things. It's very rare that the character actually says i want yes. I'm very rare. That human beings. Actually say i want. It's so rare. What do you want for dinner. I don't know. Let's talk about white space of which i think is the concept without knowing the phrase but i think it's the very concept that got me into wanting to be a professional writer is reading harold pinter in college and just really getting into a lot of college theater boys of getting really into Harold pinter and really getting into the idea of what is unsaid in a scene. And there's the pinter pause but the pause is about awkwardness. But it's also about all the things not being said and it leaves it to the viewer the the audience member to say like. I think i know what's happening. How do you feel like would you use in terms of white space. What do you think about when you think about white space in writing. I think about white space really. Technically i think about it in terms of readability. Yeah just sort of a more technical. Like i like there is access to this story. I can scan this page. I can absorb this story without doing too much work as a reader. So i think about why it's based on a really technical way interesting. Silicon of how the words look on the page and a lot of ways is important thing that you think about like it's like a visual art piece white space. Yes can you kind of just glance at a screenplay. Can you just kind of flip through the pages of a screenplay and kind of just get a sense of the pace or even the quality of the screenplay yes a hundred percent. I mean i When i was starting out. I worked as a reader script reader at like literary management company and so there was this big pool of scripts that the readers would basically could say like well. I wanna read the script and that script and everyone would fight over the scripts that had a lot of white space. Those were the ones that we didn't have to know anything about the story. But that was like the first level to entry. That's hilarious and is that. Is that an ingrained piece of knowledge that you should look for things that are less verbose or less elaborate that somebody who has an economy of words maybe actually as better at using those words. I don't know if it says they're better at using them but at least says whether this is bad or good i can read it easily and at least there's that right so it's a practical thing of like this. This one looks harder to get through than this one. I mean because chances are a lot of the stuff is going to be bad. But like wouldn't you rather read less words.

"You can keep your mind on the most important elements and as a bonus. Sometimes the best writing is the things that aren't written at all. I'm jeffrey craner. Here with brie williams writer for welcome tonight. Ville and getting on with james vanak which that was one of my favorite podcasts of all time high. Bree high jaffrey. I'm so excited to be here. Talking about minimalism. With the one of my favorite topics i am too. I will jump in and be all vanish. Even that we've known each other for a few years now but yeah when Getting on with james urbana started the same summer. That night vale started. And i'm a big fan of James as an actor. And so i immediately started listening to that show and it's just so it's such a fun in strange fiction world that he creates in that you and so many other writers have created on that show You wanna talk a little bit about working on that show in what you do as a writer short. It's interesting with that. Show with the topic of minimalism. Because when we started that show it was very monologue based and we were ultra limited in We were just doing straight monologues. And that was it. And then at a certain point james and i started talking about how do we. How might we expand this world to feel more cinematic while still being very limited in our resources like what are the details. We can add to sort of like expand that world for listeners and I think it started with an episode. We did called lockdown. Which is about a guy who is on. It's a sci-fi thing it's about a guy on a space ship and there's an active shooter situation and by virtue of all of these other officers having been killed. James is the guy in command though. He's very unequipped to do it. So that's sort of the basic plot but we were experimenting with just like a few sound effects to make this sound like okay now. This is a whole environment rather than just an isolated monologue. It's still minimal in what we were using but it was expensive. I think what we were trying to do in building out the world and so i really love that episode for that reason that it was just these very small things that we did that james did in his production that really made it feel more full and it was also a present tense Dialogue between two characters rather than a monologue after the fact past tense so that was like an interesting thing to in terms of expansion. I've loved that about writing podcasts. Because you are so limited. And we've talked to joseph and i've talked on the show about limitations in your writing and in your creation but yet you have to sort of you have to kind of leave it to the imagination of the listener so in fact a lot of times less is more in podcasting because There's no reason to fill their heads with with much more than just the personality in the basic essence of your speaker. Yeah absolutely that's so much. Yeah because you're completely absent of the visual element so there is a lot of listener engagement. I feel like when you have those limitations. You are asking the listener to be a more active participant and And i think that's really interesting ineffective when i talked to you last week about doing this episode and thinking about writing minimally. I started by saying minimalism. But i feel like that's some type of ism ish term that refers to a movement and i'm not really wanting to talk about any movement toward minimalism or the six word short story. Ernest hemingway bit. It's more about. It's more about focus writing less. It's something i've dealt with as a writer a lot. Which is i tend to say something as a person is scared and nervous and they also feel this and they do that and then over time. I start when i go through the editing process. I'm like sixty percent of the sentence is unnecessary. So it's trying to figure out how to how to write a with minimal words and fill in later. Yeah i think like when we think about minimalism we think a lot about style like minimalistic style so in writing it's like short sentences. Fewer adverbs simple vocabulary. I think it's interesting to think about style as one element of a palette of tools that writer or a creator. Has i mean. I think that there's something to be said for thinking about the other elements in relation. Minimalism like minimalism. Of plot or of character or of dialogue or of time or space and like all of these different things so i think it becomes a matter of thinking about like. What are the elements in your story that you want to emphasize on. What are the things that you want to minimize and sort of by virtue of subtraction. You are emphasizing those things that are left and i think that that's a really interesting thing to think about when creating so don't kind of like five sub topics of the idea of writing minimally of what this meant to me and we can stick to these veer off course however we want to do it but i was thinking about details and descriptions right i tend to not write a lot of descriptions of what characters look like unless sometimes there's a clothing detail that seems important later something Or unless it's vitally important to their character but the same thing with with with rooms and spaces like i try and if i need somebody to know the doors on the left i will let them know that but for the most part i try not to get into too many details about. What's in the room. So the second thing was you know thinking about the hemingway long short sentences and short or long chapters. Which i really love. Seeing short-form things have always been drawn to poetry for that reason. Technical manuals things like that just looks like really plow through. This third thing was like how much you reveal to your audience's minimalism can be used so much for as we said in podcasting for for surprise and mystery. The fourth thing is just white space as a playwright. I just think of pauses love. Love love pauses. Ooh yes. And i come from screenwriting background. That's like my formal training. So we talk about white space a lot. Like if you don't have white space dominating your pages that is an excuse for.

This is start with this. Podcast by me. Jeffrey craner co-creator of welcome to night vale. Each episode i am a writer. Lee guest discuss a topic. And then give you two assignments something to consume and something to create. Start with this minimal. Hard starting is our view on us. Stock somewhere this can start playwright. August wilson famously. Wrote long plays and his first drafts. Were even longer hit a lot to say a lot to pare down later. I love writing too much. I don't mean my love of writing is over the top. I mean that. I like writing more than i need right. Run on sentences accessible adjectives lots of descriptions of characters feelings over explaining the mechanics of plot. It's thrilling to greet people worlds. It's less fun to whittle it all down into a coherent at smooth narrative. You know what's fun apartment shopping. You know what's not fun unpacking when you have to move these days. When i write i try to make my initial drafts as focused as possible. It helps later in the editing process but carrying down isn't just about editing. It also helps your initial draft. When you start thinking less is more you start feeling the flow of your story..

Sex and the City Is Coming Back

"Sex and the city is coming back. You guys parker cynthia. Nixon and kristin davis confirmed it with this teaser. They're bringing the show back to life on. Hbo maxima. here's a twist for one thing. The show has a new name. It's called and just like that. The other big changes. That kim cottrell will not be back. As samantha. super surprise about that part of it. But you guys here for this look. I think everybody has been waiting for this to happen for a very long time. Where that you like. The series are not whether you like the movies are not you know a character. You still know which character that you are. This show holds a place. And everybody's heart. I don't care who you are man ads. but also what if your character doesn't come back. Like i'm a combination of carrying samantha. So half of me is no longer in this series. And i think you know what i mean like me. That really upsets me. I i found out about this late yesterday was like what's going on. I didn't fully understand what was going on. I'm here for it. But the fact that they're trying to use a different title and try to differentiate from sex in the city as much as possible. I just feel like is the juice worth the squeeze like you have such an iconic franchise you did the show for however many seasons. You have two movies the second movie we let pass because whatever we're super fans and we didn't care as much as we should now to revamp it in like a smaller scale with only three of the women when it's really about the four of them and then also to know that whatever feud has gone on behind the scenes is so bad that somebody will not return sort of just jolts. I don't know the the magic of it all a little bit. Like do people want no samantha. In this show one time samantha. But i i. I love the other girls enough that i told him away without her own. No the problem is the show is called. Sex city remarried broadband. We know nobody's having sex in that city. Okay so give me somebody. I need you to cast somebody. Who's going to be that young sexy siren that's going to actually explore the city as a single woman and have these women go ahead and kind of guide her through now over the years i will say sex in the city has gotten a little bit of pushback because of their lack of diversity this is. Hbo's chance and sexy cities chance to show that they can cast somebody in that role at all. I want is a quarterly simmons or isa raid in that role. We had you know. I love the. I also think it's one of those things. Where if you're not gonna bring samantha back and i know i read a little bit about the show this morning. And it says it's about the women navigating friendships in their fifties. Then i think that you need to also include losing friends. People throughout their life people who have been friends for twenty years. If you're no longer going to have samantha around. I don't wanna hear that samantha's in la or central pay or dating. Some man tell us that samantha went awol. And y'all are not cool anymore. Like i love that. And pretend she's gone and it's all fine also. Don't you think that some are Critic his character is going to be like the one divorce because she's so least likely to be divorced. They've gotta have a good twist. They're already been divorced. she's dead. She converted also watch your language. Watch your language because you keep on saying if you're not gonna have some antibac- if you're not going to invite her in samantha. Was the one kristen her name. I'm i can into the one who said she would never do. Another sex in the city again never wanted to play that character again. It was not her. She wanted to move on. So we can't because a lot of people are pointing fingers at sarah jessica parker a nephew of why shouldn't come back but she said she wasn't going to come. Was it on like kim yet. Her but there was. She couldn't get the last. I think we're done with samantha. They hate each other and the fact that they hate each other to the extent that they hate each other and we still don't really know why is fascinating to me couple. Let's get a couple like major things about the story. What do you think so you think you guys both in kristen's karat. Why can blink charlotte. You think charlottesville. What about big and kerry together or broken up together can carry gonna be together. I don't think it's going to be. I think the new adventures are gonna come with the new woman. I think we're going to get the fashion. I think we're going to get the city. And i also think we're going to get a diverse for the character that we have always need it in this series or something like twenty twenty one like i think it's i think it's just give me comoro. You like let me get my life. Yeah i'm excited about this. I am excited to see what it's gonna be and how they're gonna do it. I'm sure it's going to be good no matter what the way. Let's be honest if kim control really wanted to come back on this show. They would have done it. She worked the last two seasons not liking. Sarah jessica parker joy behar and go back and rosie o'donnell crossing each other at a table for three years. These two can be on together at young to be kuenz. Has no interest was over sad. Can

Now you can learn a lot from just watching someone breath and so as the ambulance guys were rattling off numbers. I just watched and what I saw made me very nervous. When when most people breathe we use our diaphragm and we use the muscles of our chest wall. When you have a hard time breathing you also start using the muscles appear that are called the accessory muscles of breathing and your shoulders and your neck when you get tired of breathing. It's not like other muscles. You can't just Kinda give them a break. Breathing doesn't work like that. And when I watched my patient Brie and I could see him getting tired. I could see every single muscle of his chest standing out trying to get an air and I knew that even though I didn't know what he had whether it was a pneumonia or heart failure or something else. I knew he didn't have long. There's no good way to tell someone that they're about to die. And so I just took a deep breath and I sat at his daughter had just walked into the room and both he and his daughter were devastated. They were heartbroken and who wouldn't be but there was something else as well which is that. They were surprised. Surprise has a number of problems in this situation. The first and most obvious is that it takes a tragic situation and turns it into terrifying situation for patients and for families. But but that's not the worst part. The worst part is that surprised me and people are not prepared and when people aren't prepared they haven't had time to think supplies people do not make good decisions especially not about life or death so. I want you guys to imagine for a moment that you're living with a serious illness. Maybe it's heart failure. Maybe it's cancer and someone asks you when you look ahead when the time comes what does a good death look like to you. If you're like most other people in this country we have a lot of survey data and so. I already know what you're going to say. The data are very clear. Everyone wants to die at home surrounded by family. No one wants to be hooked up to a machine. Everyone wants to have had time to put their affairs in order to make peace with themselves often with God and that's what people say when they have time to look ahead but now let's go back to the ER imagine you're my patient or maybe it's your dad. Imagine someone just told you that you're a few heartbeats away from death now quick decide. Do you want a breathing tube in a medically induced coma do you? WanNA BE HOOKED UP TO VENTILATOR. Should I get you bed in the ICU? What about a tight fitting pressurize mask as an alternative to the breathing tube? That might eventually diminish our chances of putting the breathing tube effectively. That's a lot to think about. When you're hyperventilating terrified and in shock and people in shock do not make very good decisions. So I'll tell you what usually happens is situations. Which is someone very much like me will say you know what this is really hard. Let's just put in the breathing tube. Let's see how it goes. It's put them in the ICU. Just for now and that's like you're drowning and someone throws you a life raft and it sounds so reasonable that that's what we do so the patient goes up to the ICU. And one decision leads inexorably to another decision. Let's put in a permanent surgical tube in the trachea to support is breathing for a little longer lower in the operating room. Let's just put in a feeding tube to support his nutrition to. Let's add on some medications for pain because he looks uncomfortable. I mean they'll make confused but we can't leave them like us after the ICU. Let's plan on getting him to a long-term hospital because that's really the only place where they can manage all these tubes and he's too weak to go home. One intervention leads to more interventions and months later patients are still cycling between hospitals and nursing homes. They're subjected to uncomfortable and invasive procedures and along the way they generate enormous costs costs that threatened the entire viability of our health system. It's not an outcome that anyone wants but it happens all the time one decision after another. So what if we could see further? What if we had more time to think more time to plan ahead for the kinds of decisions we want to make rather than the decisions we have to make a split-second and we're terrified? When I was younger when I was a teenage boy I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy novels. There were some role playing games. And I am a huge nerd which you could probably tell and so it was always very natural for me and my research to start thinking about a world of crystal balls a world where we could trace someone's illness all the way from today to the day of their death and I'll tell you something about my patient that makes this sound. Maybe more like science and less like science fiction so I remember when I was reading through his medical record shaking my head because I was reading about all of the admissions to the hospital. He had had over the year before all the visits to his primary. Care doctor to the many specialists every time a little bit worse and I also remember and this is actually a little embarrassing. I remember feeling angry or or at least frustrated. Because how could anyone be surprised that this man was about to die? The signs were all there. Had the family not been there for all the hospitalizations and the new medications and the worsening tests. And what about my colleagues? Surely they'd seen this coming. Had No one talked about this before. How is it my job to do this in the Er so all? This is embarrassing. Retrospect because it is such an unproductive way to think about this problem from my perspective knowing how the story ends. It's very easy to look back at this gentleman's medical record and Say oh signs were all there. We should have seen it coming. That's a lot harder in the other direction. The man that I saw in the emergency room was very different from the man that my patients had seen in their clinics one day. He's a man who is living with multiple. Chronic illnesses. Spending time with his family going to doctors appointments and the next day. He's gasping for air in the ER. The body is incredibly complex. And change happens unpredictably and quickly it turns out. We're just very bad at predicting the future but you know who's really good at predicting the future. Have you ever really liked movie? That's been suggested to you by net flicks. Have you ever ended up buying a product that you just happened to see on Amazon? So think about what Netflix Amazon. Know about you. They get to know you. Through a little collection of mouse clicks and time you spend on screen and now think about what the healthcare system knows about you. What happens every time you walk into a doctor's office get a laboratory test get an MRI? It turns out that the same algorithms that predict how much money you're going to spend online. How much traffic. You're GONNA sit in later tonight on the way home. Those algorithms are also really good at predicting the day that you're going to die. So how good are they? I'll give you some numbers are algorithms control through a number of electronic health record data sources from my hospital system and we can identify pretty exact probability of death for a number of different patients and we can identify a group of high risk patients. What is high risk in when we follow those patients up for six months after we make our judgment seventy five percent of have died same for low risk when we follow them for the same time period? It's about two tenths of one percent so those kinds of numbers that can really start changing the conversation and how we think about the end of life and how we spend those last months and we can do that for cancer patients. That are starting chemotherapy or we can do it for elderly patients seeing their primary care doctors for routine visits.

Are Democrats Finally About to Harvest the Iowa Farm Vote?

"I want to play this audio cut here from Scott Rasmussen who was on fox yesterday and talking about you know we we know that we don't have by the way we don't have any results and I mean the because of the glitch whatever it is for the state Democratic Party in Iowa so there are if you go to the different sites you'll see one point nine three percent of the vote is and but we're told that those aren't verified so right but there's been a major glitch whether it's the app whether it's inconsistencies in the reporting whatever the cause is we may not know the winner of Iowa we don't know maybe later first it was they said sometime this morning then sometime tomorrow so who knows so we can still do a preview how to analyze it when we get the results and Scott Rasmussen was talking about the fact that that not you know because there was a caucuses for the Republicans from one ninety seven point one percent of the vote but he said looking at the Republican vote is in is an indicator that the trump campaign we'll be looking at and he'll be looking at here's why there's two hundred and six perfect counties in the country they voted twice for Obama and then for trump right thirty one of them around Iowa and they're all in the eastern part of the state these are people who were looking for change when they voted for Barack Obama they didn't like the change at the end of the day in in the significance of that all across the country these voters account for only five percent of the votes that were cast but they accounted for fifty one percent of the net popular vote games that Donald Trump enjoyed so these people are working it's not the one fifty one forty nine for a bomb in fifty one forty nine for trump they want strongly for Obama and after eight years they said we want Donald Trump in the caucuses I'm gonna be watching to see where the democratic enthusiasm is if these pivot counties in eastern Iowa show low turn out in the in this caucus you're gonna say okay they've made their decision for twenty twenty if they surprise us if there's a huge turn out in those counties that we're gonna have to to re evaluate really interesting when you look at it you break it down to specific counties and Eric this is something that I think you want I can't remember we talked about this on the off the year because we're always talking but you know we had talked about where trump strength is and you would said and I agree with you on this the one great unknown is when you look for example at Iowa and you look at a lot of these counties in the eastern part of Iowa a lot of them farmers you had said that even though it's a small percentage of the population out there it's a critical population a significant amount of people that voted for trump in in twenty sixteen how does the terrorists affect them right because they're still hurting right now yes they might have gotten some money but right you know there's a lot of farmers out there thirteen and one of the things you when I always said the trump should not have done is is say that there's no harm that the farmers will be fine because they're getting the subsidies you know from the federal government will the subsidies number one the tax subsidies didn't cover all of their losses and the farmer said straight out it doesn't matter what you give us the subsidies your store in our supply chain to took us decades to get to right we want we want the supply routes of the trade routes reestablished and that's something that the that you know and a couple of governors from farm states of actually said that they said it last year I haven't heard anybody say it so far this year we have not I would have to go back and look though I mean I have those maybe log into the des Moines register or something and and maybe there's more local coverage on something like that but the point being that the this unknown has been there and I've I've said that that part of the concern that they would happen remember when you when your farm state you know like an oil state in the industry there is this residual effect there are a number of restaurants and and and the service industry and everything else stems from that that core industry in farm states it's the same so by the manufacturers of the equipment the dealerships that sell the equipment and of course everything it takes to support that industry in that state and that support of role they're all affected by the farmers are herding they're hurting too so they have to be able to trust that the president if they're going to support him I'm the one concern is that he's never going to run for office again if he when he wins in November you know it's his second term and or or maybe a third or fourth term maybe after his third or fourth term but he won't run for office again so if he was willing to do this you know now when you got the trying to deal done you know the beginning of twenty twenty because a reelection is he willing to go back and then slapped terrace on trade partners again and and can we trust that he won't do that again and as we said initially when you put the terror sunny talk about how great the terrorists are we said you shouldn't say that because people are hurting those people are hurting are gonna be pleased before that he did mellow after a while and say look I know the farmers are having problems but I'm amazed that they're still sticking by me because they understand the point he was explaining that we're doing this because it will make it better down the road for everybody what's that message well received and was there damage done by his initial statements that the terrorists were gonna cause no harm whatsoever when obviously they were the farmers and we said he should have been explaining that that way and said later on he mellowed that message right and and so what takes effect add that to what you just said to farmers believe are they worried that if he is reelected and is at that point then I'm you know a a that does have to be re elected again right doesn't have never has to run for office again well he will he start throwing the terrified again and will that hurt of food production or being able to sell worldwide food or the significant amount that they were selling to China will that permanently damage okay nothing is permanent well that temporarily for a long time they believe damage their supply chains and so they would consider a Democrat a specially if these are people that voted for as rash prison was same Obama twice and said we've had enough and then by wide margins in twenty sixteen voted for trump we don't we don't know we will see but that is the one great unknown that you were brought up a couple of weeks ago yeah well and and I think we looked at it during the terror of to during the terrify war to another factor here is that China is looking at growing there all agriculture based themselves took you to to help hedge against any future terror of wars or anything else plus the massive population your they're looking at that they're looking at some of the meatless I'm burger type proteins and everything else they're looking into anything and everything they can that is more sustainable that they don't have to rely on trade to get now it's going to be a blue it's going to be a long while before they are able to do that and they also need our energy they need American oil so that you know that works to keep them in line so if you're if you're a farming state and your voter and you're considering the two ideas right terrorists verses the Democrats and high taxes well with terrorists your business goes away and you can only get a government handout for so long what high taxes you work a little bit harder to pay those taxes you look for tax cuts tax breaks but at least the businesses there the one thing that a that the Democrats I think where they kill themselves on on issues especially with farmers is some of the regulatory stuff that came across like during the Obama years the EPA rules that were just wreaking havoc on form states so they also don't want that type of activity or that type of policy being put it brie implement it because it would under any of them whether it's Biden or Bernie or any of them they would immediately move through the E. P. H. R. to re implement those policies those regulations which were killers so they have to be able to trust trump one of the things as you know he's moved on after all he's he wants to increase seven all spending so there's part of it there's you know that gives you some of the farming community but you've got to really work to us re establish that trust I think he has a much better shot than any of them on the
