The Spirit to Soar: Lt Col Barry Bridger's Story of Hope

"A book's been written called the spirit to soar. And it's about the true story of former orphan and POW lieutenant colonel Barry bridger, U.S. Air Force, retired, colonel brazier, I am also a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force as well. Finished it got 20 years and so we'll see if I make it that way. Then you got Jim, Peterson. Jim is with us, and he is on that other blue, a little bit darker below the navy side, which I actually started in. But I spent more of my time with the green guys down at camp Pendleton when I was there as a chaplain, but folks, guys, it's good to have you all with us. This has been an exciting I got to look over the book. And let me just tell you, Jim for riding it, but Barry for sir for you and what you've been through. Thank you both for service and I'm looking forward to some discussion here. So am I let it rip? Here we are too. I love it. Well, let's start off jam almost start off with you on the riding of the book. You ride in the book about why you started it, but you chose it to be a biography, but also a lifeless and explain that a little bit. Well, you know, Malcolm gladwell wrote a book called outliers. And he talks about people who do extraordinary things. So started out, I've observed very known very over 30 years now. And I've observed him in the things that he does, I knew a story, but I didn't know it all that well. And once I learned his story, I told him, one day I met a writer biography in that process. I opened up the discussion of this biography saying that berry's been an inspiration in my life. I've learned so much and so a publicist said, it's a life lesson book. So we put out 17 life lessons that I've learned from Barry's life. And he's had a tremendous impact on my life.

"What's up everybody, it's Michael here with your next level selling podcast. Don't you're having a wonderful day. So this is the Jackson hole Wyoming edition. I really am just calling it that because, you know, I want to talk a couple minutes about my wife and myself going out to Jackson hole Wyoming. And, you know, it wasn't really a vacation trip, although it was a vacation trip. I'll explain that. So a couple years ago, pre-pandemic, we're gonna start having these new terms now. But pre-pandemic, SunTrust bank, which is now morphing into truest, which, you know, I love you a SunTrust, I'm not sure where the whole truest came from, but it's growing on me. But SunTrust bank awesome bank that we deal with in the car industry for the auto loan side, they basically awarded our dealership. So it wasn't me specifically. I'd love to sit there and say, hey, it was all me. But it wasn't. It was the dealership. So, you know, we have a great team there, a great management team, great F and I guys, sales managers, GM, great sales team. So bottom line is we were awarded this trip for sending them so much business. I mean, these guys were having their mortgages paid without a doubt. Okay, I thought that was funny. But anyway, so we send them a lot of business. And as an award to the dealership, they offered this trip for two people all expenses paid to go out to Jackson hole Wyoming and my GM being the awesome man that he is. He basically awarded it to me this time around because I don't know. You know, I'd like to think that I, you know, a couple years ago I was really working hard and I still do, but I was working pretty hard putting in the hours and so they awarded me the trip, the GM and the owner. And so anyway, but then, you know, pandemic hits and trip is off. Well, SunTrust came through and four or 5 months ago, they emailed me and said, hey, guess what? We're going to Jackson hole pandemic or not. So my wife and I are pretty excited about that and we flew out. I don't know last Sunday and I know you're hearing this on Monday, but I'm talking a week ago. So we flew out last Sunday to Jackson hole. Man, it was beautiful. Kind of flew in a little bit cloudy. I don't know if you've ever been there, but a lot of people don't know this, but Jackson hole Wyoming is at a higher altitude than the mile high city of Denver Colorado. So it's a higher altitude, don't believe me. Google it. And we were right there at the four seasons resort. I think it's a bridger mountain, the bridger gondola and if you go to the top of the mountain, which we did, you're over 10,000 feet elevation. Nosebleed, like, literally my nose was bleeding. It was pretty cold. So that was a bit gross. I apologize. But nonetheless, so we got out there and they took us on this really cool kind of a safari, if you will..

"Fall especially since i went all out for father's day. Do i straight up. Ask for a gift again. Would it mean anything at all. I have to force him. Am i being selfish. Thanks so here. You are hosted by said no gifts. Okay the podcast. About gifting about giving about who you are as a person through your purchases and so my god for this to come in here have perfect bridgier. We have to start with you as the host of my second i mean. Why didn't she right in to me. That's my question. I'm offended that she didn't reach out to me in the first place. But you know this. This is a good of places any this is. What's happening in this relationship. She is not hiding. It sounds like she's been very direct. She wants a gift she was. She also wanted to be celebrated on mother's day. She said these things and he refused. Sorry match. that like being so adamant. I know it's still. There is a physical creature in your arms. I refuse to celebrate you right. You're not a mother to me. I mean and this is why she wrote into couples. Therapy okay bridge or i this this is. It's not just about a gift. No this is the hugh. What are we talking about divorce. Get this ship. I really don't even talking about here. This guy seems like he's out of his mind. I mean a lot of people celebrate mother's day for just random women in their lives whether that's right you're a cat mother or just like you're you're not my mother but i know your mother or evidently given my friends presents for like a knowing when they were pregnant like almost mother's day you need few moments because i'm never remember anything again. You know what. I mean like just names of your children exactly so it's just remember up top when you're still recognizable to me. But she's she's like you know. Should i ask again. Am i being selfish. We'll tell you right now and you could probably tell by reaction. You're not being selfish. Oh i mean. I guess you can ask again. I i mean maybe there's another part of this where he's doing some wonderful thing in her life. That's just so incredible that she left that out and that she wants to hold onto unless if the rest of the relationship is anything like this e e mail or anonymous instagram message. Get out otherwise. I guess ask again right rabi. Write him a letter and ask. Maybe that'll help. And what the item is you want. Yeah registry of one thing was editor him. Said it will link like. I'm sorry i'm just like i'm harping on like how adamant this guy is but it just makes me think that there is more there that that like unless okay. Here's the only thing i can think. Sometimes we're like. I'll be doing a lot for you now. And then you ask for a thing on top of that and i'll get a little peeved. You bristle bristle little. Because i'm like already doing these other ten things correct. You're asking for an eleventh thing right. But i probably didn't ask you for one through eight right like theater. I mean 'cause i i know what you mean but i think there's a difference i as you do a lot of work around the house and that's something you took on even before i proved to be mentally ill as you like things a certain level of neat. You don't want jeans chair so that's how you started doing it because you were like a cannon need to sweep every day and it's like i would never sweep every day so there you go so i think sometimes when i was like. Oh hey will you give me a ride somewhere. It's like that's a very specific. Need to me. Yes you see. What i'm saying even because i mean i think antidote sandwich bridge or i'm just out here heading out here taking mid day three hour naps. And he's joining the work then. I really can't drive so i need to be drought. Place is well. I think that's completely fine. Like i think i'd go through a similar thing with my relationship. Start listing things. I've done all day. I make the coffee. I did the dishes all these things. I'm like well. Jim didn't ask me to do any of those things i chose to do. It wasn't like his wishlist was do the dishes. It was my thing. So i can't hold that against him when he wants something else. Yeah i think and then going back. I think some people are not good at giving gifts. I think some people are forgetful and need a little pushing and like the idea of being like. You should know what i want. I think is a little unfair but it sounds like in this situation. She's been as direct as humanly possible with this person and then to say to use the word refused he refused. It's like well. What are we working with here. This is not a forgetful person. He's not bad with gifts. He's just directly disregarding everything you say to him. Yeah i mean i guess. Here's here's my thing. Have a conversation and ask. Hey why was this such a problem for you like what was it like. Because maybe there's something deeper under the surface like his some issue. Was he afraid that something would happen to the baby unity bean. Was this.

"You can rate and review the show on apple. Five stars please. It'll only take ten seconds. And it helps us tremendously. Okay that's it. We love you deeply now back to the show and we're back we've got bridgier here. Winegar wininger wine iger good. We don't get that right honey. We're here to handle your scandal. You now know everything you need to know about. And what will be informing his advice to you. Okay i just thought of this. You and brigid can connect over that the fact that people mispronouncing names. That's true god that's true. Ending battle know. I know i kind of gave up on it for a while. And then it has just just now haunts me because a lot of people in my life mispronounced. My name and i'm like you've been part of my life for years. Can't correct to how you say. My name i know. Hey bridgier because this has been my kind of like problem of like internalizing everything and then not talking about unless it gets to a breaking point or something like that what is like how are you dealing with that is like my therapist will pay attention to the stuff in the moment and then if you feel like you need to talk about it in the moment then do it that way you know close enough to that moment as opposed to like weeks later. That's exactly what i've been told. Which of course makes perfect sense like. Why would you not just but it's Uh i've just been trained. My brain is so trained to think. Oh well i should really over think this thing until true. I actually hate the person who did it again. The giant fight rather than just being like jim if he has a problem with his mom on the phone they will yell yell at each other for a minute at the move on. Thank you can express emotions in the moment. I am not familiar. I know i get that. I get that. Do you like now that like now. If you like leave your genes on a the kitchen chair. And say hey. Do you mind taking us to the bedroom do you. Are you angry now. That i i'm angry with the way you word it. Take those the bedroom just say. Could you move these genes off the dishes and see what attitude attitude but just more direct. Do you mind put you out too much. Make the house a shithole. That makes perfect sense. It's like the behavior. It's still not quite Doing it correct number. It's like well. I'm still not going to express my emotion totally. i'm going to make this nice situation rather than just. This isn't even a problem. There just jeans on the chain your genes are on the chair. Put them where they need to go up. See that's me okay. The are always going to be on a chair. Okay bras gonna be on a couch okay. I it's not even. I will say this though. Think about i've been thinking about this. Is this how. I know. I love you so much. I have had a package in our vestibule. At least ten days air drew has not once said. You think you're going to open that and take it out the best. What a nice man. Because i know he. I know he fighting urge. You know what i mean. Because i'm like what could well part of i'm of curious. What's in there. But you know what to. There are just some things where i'm like. You know what if this doesn't really affect me and doesn't like like the jeans. I want a little bit of anita apartment but if i think that's fair right like we we've been back from new york for how many weeks now and your your luggage is still right there. Well now cat sweep on it. So i can't get rid of that for them and that's why haven't said anything today. You just put your suitcase away. And i saw his suitcase. Because his and then i saw and i was like okay. Challenge accepted you know what. I saw suitcase that have been placed properly. I thought maybe i should try now. Anyway yes sharp bridge. I was just trying to tell you that. There's a a a bridge from your heart to mind and i. It's nice to know that somebody knows how i feel somewhat somewhere out in the world. Someone has a hard time communicating their emotions. Yeah a lot of people. Millions of here in america so majority okay. So we get questions instagram. Twitter g mail voicemail. Of course our favorite is i. One though is an instagram direct. Message from anonymous i picked. This is this is what a wonderful synergy. Because at you'll find out why british. Hi naomi andy love the pod. I'll get straight into it. My beautiful daughter was born in late. May gorgeous so this past mother's day. I was still pregnant. My husband refused to acknowledge it. As i wasn't a mother yet graced magic hard stance on mother's day because the person is seven months pregnant. They're like eight till it crowns. You ain't a mother. There could be something else in there. so sorry. Where was i was it yet. I didn't see him gaining forty pounds. Okay i don't know why i'm lying. It was fifty or less. I love you. I see you or giving up his evening cocktail for nine months for this baby but whatever i can be chill. I semi jokingly asked him what he was giving me as a push present parentheses a present for the new mamas. Thank you for pushing a watermelon size out of your and practices and when i did get a good response. I just told them what. I'd like fast forward to today. I'm on maternity leave. No not that the other one with the two guys who are always dreaming of having rabbits and the and you work on a ranch rabbit brothers. Oh i don't think it's revenue. I recover caused problems. I think i've had that problem for a long time. I have to say that. I firmly believe as a result of the stress caused by everything in the last couple of years. Not the least of which is called. my word. Recall is just unbelievable that you're telling me my order called. I mean it's worrisome. What is happening to my brain. How i can't remember. There's gotta be something to help improve. That right is there are some little game. I can play on my phone. That'll help my word recall. You know supposedly there was at one time. I think called luminosity. I think it was called. Somebody told me about it. And i put it on. My phone was supposedly these memory games. There were supposed to sharpen your memory. I forget to use it. Oh you're kidding. You think because a lot of people that i talked to say they are having that problem with word. Recall and with your memories. You would think that this would put a dent in the game. Show industry like that. You really notice. The competition lagging there would be as grape zalm blank and people were just okay. Rhymes with bath thing pass. Is it past. Yeah you would think that would show up in places like that. But i haven't of mice and men is what it's called thank you did you come up with that on your own or did you google it or something like that. I look i'm not revealing. i'm revealing that. We have a producer named on lease who has access. I also google that but look we all know of mice and men. We just you. And i were sitting here. Were engaged in this conversation. No one can expect us to know the entire steinbeck catalog off to off. The top of our heads of mice and men should be easy. Grab so let me get this straight. Because everybody's did it right away. I mean just no time with by where you were really not. You were not flapping like a fish on dark for very long before she's like. Oh it's is that because like if she hadn't done that when the rim show like when you're finished recording show you're going to be right up in her face like an anti vaccines swimming. It gets that mass. Why it why didn't you tell me why my my relationship with ana loose extremely contentious. They are constantly in my face. I'm constantly in their face and w- the wheels are gonna come off. At some point. I knew a lot of anger there. Simmering resentment blood friction definitely. And eventually it's going to destroy this podcast and probably both of us. You guys probably benefited from not being able to be in a studio. Oh when we get back to the studio. It's gonna be a fistfight almost immediately. Yeah yeah you know. The violence is just waiting to happen between us has actually been working out following Online videos of self defense techniques and at first. I thought it was silly. But now i know that i see you and i hear about the kind of rancor that is facing practically bringing. Ics no gifts down. It's you know it's in the trades. The you know rumors are all over the place. People know what's going on and we've done our best to hide it but we might as well just put it out there now on the listen i are going to destroy each other the and that's fine. That's you know we've seen that happen in podcast. After podcast i'm not unique eventually the producer and the host You know it ends in violence and that's fine. Yeah yeah well it's the way. Look i wanna play a game with you. Oh do you want to play a game called gift or a curse or a game called gift master. And i'll tell you how we're gonna play at once. We decide oh based nothing. Okay no not based on nothing based on two very descriptive evocative. Titles all right. I'll take a gift or curse. Okay i need a number between one and ten from you told you a word recall problems and now you're making me the plague never between one. How 'bout how. 'bout four no average us. I love no one chooses for your actually turn burs three seven. That sort of thing. But i'm gonna go for. Four is an underappreciated number. And i like that. You chose that okay. I have to do some light calculating to get the game pieces. We'll be playing with so right now. I want you to recommend something promote something. Do whatever you want. i'll be right back. You have the microphone you stepping away to. I'm stepping away paula. You have got to put on your big worm pants and do what you wanna do. Wow there's a lot of pressure we'll take this moment to recommend to people that they not that they leave your podcast ever but that with whatever additional time they have they sample nobody listens to polycom stone which is also very very fun if it's a matter which changing one for the other simply don't do it but i do think that you might enjoy. Nobody was still paula. Poundstone by the way my kathy. That's wonderful your cat has entered the picture you did. Wonderful little promotion. There that was perfect. People should go. Listen to your podcast and just enjoy the wonderful things. Paula has done for everybody so much. Like you said the other day didn't endure anything that day. Oh cut it out. Wait wednesday no. This is how the game works. I'm going to name three things. You're gonna tell me if they're a gift or a curse and why there are correct answers. I have to be so clear with you. You can failed this game. You can lose miserably it kind of ruins your evening and then it will your ruined evening will bleed into tomorrow and tomorrow probably be ruined for you and then it could just erode the rest of your life so just be careful. Yeah well. I as far as things that on the rest of my life go. It's going to have some competition. Okay first up. This is a listener suggestion. Someone named lizzie has written in and suggested gift or a curse. Chili cook offs curse. And why.

"This worms. No it's warm. Waste giving you some of the famous bro poundstone casting. This is a biohazard. If you do have houseplants or plants outside. i've got both this is important. Which is they've done like experiments they found. If you're using like a soil mixture with some worm castings if you use. If it's ten present worm castings it will improve. Growth your plan. If it's percents war castings you will improve the of your plant even more substantially but if it's forty it will negatively affect. What have you sent me. It's not a mixture. that's pure warm. Waste so i just need to. I need to use the sparingly. Exactly what i to set. Yeah like around the top. Say i use it on some succulents and and then i put it on before i water them and then that makes when you wire that it goes down in and so what are we talking about for like. Let's let's not the sound like one succulent. do i wanna put like a teaspoon on there Yeah if it's like a little how slanty kind right. That's the young people enjoy. Yes i'm telling you you grow the entree to. I would love to grow audrey. I'd love to be swallowed whole by of venus flytrap. Yeah it's gonna you're gonna feed it warm waste and then pour some water on it and say thank you. I may this could be the gateway drug for you. I would love a fertilizer gateway drug i there. My plants are in varying stages of health. I've i've gotten better at taking care of my house plants. My vegetable garden is here and there. You know it's it's hard to tell. But this i think could really benefit me in. A huge way is going to change a life. I'm telling you and y'all be calling me day and night and you get more. We're movies so when you're selling your worm waste our like our people finding you. Oh know what. I've only. I just sold. My first batch harvested approximately two gallons. Wow and i advertised it on my own podcast which is called. Nobody listens to pala poundstone. And you know me and my assistant when we had talked about how we were going to put it on the website and how we end to figure out how much per ounce or bid by complicated in the and the pay pal and the huda nod just like you know what i'm gonna do any of that. Here's wearing. I knew so i looked up on the internet. I found out what white commercial bags of this cell for right. I priced comparably. So i sold my about to gowns for as i just said on my on my podcast. They said hey. I have my first service a warm waste. It's about two gallons. I'll charge thirty five dollars. Whatever the shipping is and if you wanna do it right to me at at my website and somebody and so it was so easy that way in hidden have to mess around with all this other stuff. I will say that we should it off to them and i can't. I'm not certain that we remembered to get payment. But i will well thirty five dollars to plus the twenty one ninety four the shipping because was going to connecticut. But this is. It's my friend pointed us. this is celebrity. Warm waste tycoon. Regular worm waste and what some arms did. Go into a accidentally. They're just the babies are so small that when you go to sift they end up so there might be a warmer to vote. So that's sounds like a huge bonus story. Yeah now are you. Branding the worm waste. Is this poundstone worm. Waste is. I was gonna start a company called poundstone popat just from the elimination right right. I'm not sure even have to go that far. I will at some point but these are uncertain times. So i don't know that it's really the time to invest in a lot of packaging and civil. I mean the worm. Waste is now bench. Ben mentioned on your podcast now on mine it feels like the pr is read. The pr machine is going. It's waning nation. This thing we're headed. Were just months away from the holidays. People are looking for gifts. Now what am i going to give it. They look to the poundstone worm. Waste and i think that that could be the big hit of the season. I hadn't thought about that. You're absolutely right. I might have to have the over my marketing department. Look i'm always looking for new ways to you know increase. These are bank account numbers. I feel like this is the one that's going to shula to the moon i. I'm so bad at marketing. The idea of selling something as a christmas gift never even occurred to me. So you really your gift in this of i mean. Look i've got so many. My talents are myriad. I'm just such a skillful person. So you bring on your worm. Waste to my podcast. I'm looking for ways to get it to expand the market. I i live in a teeny little house. But i don't see on this. I don't know how i'm going to be able to stay here. We'll start packing up to move to like a a. We're ranch with a dude. Who was the one cows and you have to have a bunk house. Remind what does a bunk house. I don't know what a bunk houses and bunk house is where the the ranch hinz stay. Oh wow well that's alert. We're learning all sorts of things excited about it. Did you read. let's see ooh what's.

"There was nothing. Zero. There was nothing for that bear, and you know, bears by nature are curious, right? So they may even come by or even when they don't smell anything. They just, hey, what's going on over here, right? But bears in general are smash and grab artists. And if you can think of them that way, and you can think of doing everything in your power. Not to give them an opportunity to linger at your site and say, hey, I smell this. You are, you have won the war, man. You know, I'm not saying a bear won't come into your sight, but if there's nothing to see here, if they don't, they may smell food, but it's not gonna be on the nylon of your tent. It's not gonna be on your sleeping bag. Yeah. It's not gonna be on your clothes. It's not gonna be anywhere near your tent. And that's the key. So that's the tips we wanna give. Yeah, so it's about avoiding the interaction to begin with and it's about reducing the interaction. So that's just barebone basics of it. So one of our first tips is a void tracking smells into your sleeping area altogether. So when you're in the back country, in bear country, you know, you are removing your sleeping area as far away from your eating area as possible. It should be at least 100 yards. And if you want to, you know, add a little bit more to that. Hundred yards is about a football field to give you a visual of all you football fans and those that don't like football like me. Just do your best to envision it. Or track your footsteps. But generally, I can't believe I can't believe you're gonna use a football analogy. I don't know how else to visualize it. It's really hard to visualize that because we don't work in yards. We work in miles. We don't work in yards in our business. For you to have to bring the best I could do right away. But anyway, the funny thing about the hundred yards and that's been that's been around for a long time. It's written almost in every guide buckets written almost on every leave no trace bug. But here's the thing and I want to kind of chime in on this. The hundred yard away from your tent, this is where the lazy hiker and the lazy person, you might get away with that stuff and in some states and bears in some bear states in the southeast you might get away with that. I don't think I'd be doing the smokies anymore. That's just my opinion. You know, but in Yellowstone, I'm gonna tell you something in Montana, bob Marshall wilderness, Montana, teton bridger wilderness, in Wyoming, and the tetons, you better, you better cook a hundred yards away from your tent. And that's that's up to you on whether you don't think it's going to happen to you or not. But I'm just telling you, Ariana and I are giving you some really good advice. You might get away with that in other states..

"So you don't spend much time on twitter anymore not much anymore. It's way way too depressing. It's been dominated by the unfunny. Est people in the world get a lot of fun and i i wouldn't even include myself. I was much more of a sort of avoid era. But there are people like you and there were so many interesting funny voices on their five eight ten years ago and is now dominated by virtual virtue signaling amongst people who wanna already know that they're doing the right thing right and a race to be right everybody's racing. It's not just about being right. It's about how quickly you can put it out there. I'm amazed by people by how much how right they are about. Every subject follow whom. I kind of like i kind of know every subject that comes up there like and then this and then so and so shouldn't be doing this wait. You're just as impassioned about. "Badge. Wow this is incredible. Well so now. I'm learning so much from my own head size to just the care of hats. It's incredible. I don't know what to even do with myself that's it. I mean hats. i. I've a recent hat wearer probably in the last couple of years just as far as baseball caps. You know when it's just like i don't want my hair. My hair is out of control. Let's throw on a baseball cap but even though those baseball caps and hats and shorts. They're two of the most difficult things to find that the you'll look good in. I agree. I think that has especially are very intimidating for people because it's a big it can be a big statement and i think that a lot of people are i think a lot of people assume they can't pull them off when they absolutely can. I think you have a good. I pictured you in this hat. And i thought bridge or has a great face for this. I think you are a hat guy and you might not be aware of it. Well a few years ago. I thought you know i started toying with the idea of what if i made a giant shift in style and had a very specific style and suddenly i really like dressing like an old fashioned cowboy tv. Probably howdy. doody. Let's going to happen to so i'm gonna end up looking like how duty. So never cancelling the idea. But i like. I do like the idea of wearing a hat. I mean with a baseball cap. It's essentially don't look at me with the top hat. It's like everyone look and speak and think of me at all times exactly So i need to. I would love to get into the zone with the hat. It's especially for someone with a fair complexion. Good a straw hat is is for the summertime right. I have a friend who also sunburns easily. She's got all kinds of big hats just wearing around town. That's not a bad idea. Preserving myself for later. That kind of thing less sunscreen needed to send him out. This is not to be used as a replacement for sons but it is a good thing i need is a a straw hat can go about naked. Been a volcano son at a straw hat. A nice menstrual has so grateful. If you show like a pool party you know he's then you take it off you get in the pool you come out. Your hair's all messed up from the from the poll. you don't have to worry about it. You just put the hat on. It's a great feeling. It's a good look. I i really do think that you have a great. You have a great face for halves. If i appreciate that great face for hats the head far too large for most of them. That's fine you'll be happy to learn without guessing. There are many hats that will guessing. Is there a hat style hat. You won't wear that you're opposed to. I don't really like those sort of beanies not like a whirlwind like wear that. It's sort of felt you know kind of thing. I don't really like that. Look that much. Yeah that's the only had. I can currently picture probably because you just set up that i can't wear because you can kind of drift from style to style. You're wearing this hat right now. In great with your mustache begging also imagine a cowboy hat atop sense thank you. Do you wear a baseball cap. I do like when i go to the gym aware baseball cap. Oh and if. I'm just running errands or whatever. Yeah baseball cap. Is i think a great. I like fitted cap. I like these sort of I like the shape of that ryan. Then like the what is known as the dad hat. I don't of course. I don't like it. Yeah i'm i'm ready for the dad cap. Let's move onto a baseball cap. That just is a shape absolutely back into that style guys in the big leagues look. I'm barely in the hat game. I can't be making call. I'm determined to get you in it. This is my. this is now my goal. I'm off to a decent start. I've got the steamer. I've got to get this thing under control. And then what do i pair. This top with a tuxedo. Sure or i mean. I feel like it's a good thing for for new year's eve party you mall show. Of course you can either wear a suit or you could wear one of your nice sports coats with whatever putting together a sort of fun. Eye-catching outfit why not throw fucking top on complete the look. yes. I love to complete the look. I'm also in favor of people just making their own thing. Yeah i feel like. I'm kind of in this fog of i don't know what style is anymore and also events in the past year where it didn't really matter. Yes maybe it's time. I get kinda direction and go for it rather than just throwing on the first thing i see in my closet. But you we've got. I don't have that much energy. we'll see about happens. What's what's something that you've you've always liked the look of but you've been you've felt like you couldn't pull it off. I love i love someone on safari and old safari person. That's a very sharp. Look i'll say like what banana republic use to look like when it was when it was sore. Yeah right i mean. I would love to look like i should be holding a machete kind of on the back of the jungle cruise absolutely but i'm also fairly small person so i like things. That aren't too billowy clothes. Magic castle demonstrated to most while you. I like those a as i said before a cowboy. But i'm now like actually saying it allowed. Feels like it could be a difficult. Look for me to achieve. Don't know i i. Maybe i hire a stylus. Do you have a favorite outfit. Do you have a thing like if you get invited to something like a nice party or whatever going out to dinner where you're like. Oh i get to wear this. I have a favorite polo shirt which i purchased. It was founded at a store like basically under a pile of clothes it was. I think it was produced in probably nineteen sixty five but was brand new and it fits wonderfully everything about it. I like i was wearing at once. And this very fashionable new woman from new zealand said. That's a catchy shirt. Which i thought. That's such a great way to describe and that for me. So maybe i do. It looks kind of summary and it fits well sprawling apart at this point. Because i've worn so much don't own. Nothing like destroyed the things i do this do this is life bridgier and yes. We ran them apart. Do you have a favorite outfit. I do tend to wear like the same handful of things over and over again. Because i just can't you know like i. I get paralyzed by choice of my own closet. Not that. I have like a walk in closet from wonderland i do have i. Do i have like outfits like suits or whatever to be prepared for things right. This is good. In case. I get to that thing or whatever but like right now. The summer i have the sort of suit that i got from a company called alex crane and this an instagram vine. Which will.

"For a little while there and it's fun. It's long enough to to kind of forget about it and then somebody brings up. You're like oh yeah. Let's go and it feels exciting. But i can't see like people that go there all the time i mean. That's that's a lot right. There's only so much magic one person can take back to the food. It's horrifying i. I mean the body can only take so much so you usually wear a top hat. Make sense to me now. I've never done that at the magic castle. Because i feel like i could but i it does feel like wearing top hat when you're not a magician to a place seems like it seems like it would invite questions from other patrons that's bit like wearing a red shirt to target. Suddenly everyone's asking you question questions and expecting and you are disappointing them with your answer okay. So now back to this particular you got this on ebay was you. Just do you just get on ebay and type in top hat or was there like a specific. That is exactly what. I did incredible. I think i think i typed in. I felt top hat. It's so should. I put it on. Yeah take that. You can unscrew that. Then you don't have to do that. Perfect and now. There's something in here. These are hat size reducers. Yes i did not. I gave you a stretcher. And i gave you reducing tape because i had no idea of your head size around and i appreciate yes. I took a guest. But i mean bridge. I looked at pictures of you of you standing next to other people. I tried very hard to gauge. Is he like trim guy who has a big show biz head that when you find out the side you're like oh really like one of those type of things so i took a gamble okay. Yeah i couldn't tell you if my where my head lies in the grand scheme of as a kid. I knew i had a huge head. Okay now as an adult what would you say your guests do still have a big head. I think your your head looks in proportion to your body okay. Good to heaven. But why now i can see what i'm looking at your your head neck and shoulders okay. So in proportion to your shoulders. I think you have like a little bit of a of a large head okay. Beautiful but in a striking way like in a way that show biz people have. It's one of those eye catching heads tackling if it draws you in okay. I'm going to put this on not for the entire thing because you know that's gonna make both of us uncomfortable for me to be sitting here in a top hat for the rest of but let's see i would feel right at home now. Does that does that fit correctly. So now what do i do. I guess i can put it like this. Does this work while there. That's why i brought the. I gave you the stretcher as well as a bigger yes. It doesn't just maintain the size. No it will. It will literally stretch it out. And i don't but that that might be a little too. Can you tell me what size it is at seven eight francs. It's a giving away some information about the size of my head here. This is a seven one eight. Yeah you're probably a seven and a quarter. I'm a seven and three eighths and seven hundred quarters one down from my own study. Basically what we're saying is you said. I had a big head. You had zoomed. I had a big head from afar. But you were way off. My head is enormous. I was way off. I i would say. Can i see it again you again. Yeah that's say mentioned like this. Yeah the taegu's in the back can you. Can you give me a profile. I'm going to say like yeah. You probably are seven and a quarter. So might even be seven to three eighths. Which in which i was i was to off. Paul is a tall man. And i essentially in the same. That is not true. Certainly taller than me. Maybe five nine. Okay dad i mean anything above five four to me is extremely tall. Won't be in the nba. So paul who is significantly taller than me. Had we share the same head side so listener. You're the the podcast of the biggest head in the industry. So just be aware of that. At this point we discover things all the time about ourselves. Well it's beautiful and with the stretcher. I just put it in there and just crank it a little bit. The ideally you would have do have to have a steamer. I don't have a steamer one. If need be i ideally steamer would do it. You would so you would soften the felt and the the brim ri- right. And then you would crank it as as much as you can and then let it sit for for for a while. But i would say judging from the way it looked. It's not gonna work. It's not going to be enough because there's only so far you can do with data right it. Could explode had shrapnel in your face that's took my father now okay. Well then this is i mean but going back to being a beautiful work of art I just have a nice thing to display. Yeah absolutely. I mean that said it fits. I mean it sits atop my head. How much does this thing need to be on my head to be technically fit. I feel like i could still wear it. iraq. I mean where to an event right. You want a hat to fit to come to just above your ears. Oh you're kidding you one more time. If you just put it straight on your head yeah you know what you might want to try the stretcher and see. I'm going to try the stretcher. And just what happens. I mean what. What do we have to lose at this point exactly and we have to gain. Yeah and top hats are oval there oval opening so it could make the difference. So i'm gonna wanna stretch it horizontally basically towards my ears stretch no or do not do that. That will break the hat what you wanna do. Y- you want to follow. The shape of the stretcher. Is the shape of the hat. So yeah well the good thing. It never occurred to me that there would be another way. But i'm glad you spoke up. Well if you want someone to think of the wrong way to do something copying call. I will find a way to ruin object now. Should i get back into this box. There's more going on sure. Yeah yeah yeah oh so you. Why don't you just open a hatch off. I assume this is to maintain the hat. Yes that is to clean. Brush to clean the hat. You would essentially do it a counterclaim. You brush counterclockwise. Oh this is a merit badge. I had could absolutely next boy scout. The boy scouts shutdown. It's hard to say but that could be the first merit badge of the new boy. Scouts hat care the new boy scouts. If they're getting an tearing for top outs. I'm going to have a son just to make him join my boys. A proud.

"Probably over the last. What is my oldest. One probably goes back like twenty years or so something. Okay so yeah. We had a couple of decades of slowly acquiring ten beautiful hats. Yes and did you have to educate yourself or was this kind of a just by a random top had that looks nice and then continue. Well i it would be kind of both like i would. I would find a hat and then learn about it. You know like something. I hadn't seen before and learn what what specific era it it came from. These are not all vintage. Obviously because that gets first of all. It's very very hard to find. Like if you're talking about a top hat from the bella poke era or something like to find something like that. In good condition would be prohibitively expensive. It would be insane. But there's there's places that do reproductions of things like that and There's a place called. Baron hats that used to be in burbank is now downtown. They make hats their place. That a friend of mine told me about. They may catch for movies. And so i've had a few hats made there over the years and so when you have them make a hat. Do you see you see a photo of a hat and say i need it and glad to have it pretty much exactly what it is. Yeah i had the make me a very tall. I felt top hat. All god that was expensive but not prohibitively so just paris singley so round but it really is like well only have one of these main. I'm not gonna do every year now. Broke and your houses just littered with them have to come to my wife and say well. I'm not gambling. It's kind of funny when you think about it. So i had this thing made and it was. You know what i loved about. It was that it was. It was made to my specifications. And it's definitely a thing that would look familiar like maybe something you've seen in a movie or something but it is a specific specific height and shape that i picked out and so when you go to the hat maker with this. Do you take a photo. Do you take and look it up online like. Maybe i've seen something that i like. And then i tried to find as many pictures of that style as possible from different angles and things like that. Say this is what. I'm learning and so then you give notes on the hat or is it. Just you get what you get. No you do. You're able to collaborate with them. Which is a lot say i wanted to. I wanted to look like this this this this with band. You know like all that kind of stuff and it's it's you know there. There's more options than you might think. And it's it's fun to make those decisions right now. Do you are all of your top. Hats black no i have. I have a many black top hats i have. I do have an opera. That was maybe the first one i ever bought. Which is the collapsible top. Yes exactly i never. I never talk with people about this so it is like. Would you say that's a dream. That's exactly how i feel about that. That is i gotta have gotta have that you know like truly like you've travelled through time to get that object. What's funny is they're still making them. Like like christie's in london is still making hats for gentlemen and he's still make top. That's because there are like there are. There are formal weddings in england where the men wear top topics like right able in the bridal party where topics and but they still make collapsible silk opera hats. And it's like. I don't know that anyone is still wearing that like anywhere. I mean what could possibly call for that. Yeah like prince regnier is dead. There's no one left. That's wearing cooks. He'll collapsible opera. Well speaking of that. I mean have you worn this i mean. Where do you wear these hats when you get the opportunity. I wear them onstage. And i wear them like. I'll wear something to a christmas party or something like that. And it's what's funny is like is still even though i'm i'm known for the way that i dressed in and and i liked dressing up and i've always liked dressing up. I still get a little shy about going that far. Sometimes it depends. It depends who. I'm gonna see if i if i know that people don't know the people but on stage i feel like i can get away with it for if i'm if i'm doing like a a variety show or something and For one shawl where like you know white tie and tails and a wear a top hat. Because it's like i can. I can get away with that. They're but but yeah in in riverdale. There's not that many occasions that require it. No-one requires it anymore at all. But if i if. I have the chance like if i were going to go to the magic castle or something. That's a place where you are. There's a dress code you're required to dress up but you can also go over the top if you want you know because it's a fun place and you won't be. It won't be strange to see. I had the most traumatic possible experience at the magic castle with their dress code one five and turned away the door. I was not turned away at the door. I was very well dressed. I so jim. His friend was taking us. I was told there's a dress code. You need to dress up. That's as far as i heard. So i put on what i believed to this day. Believe was a very snappy outfit. I had a sport coat and orange orange sport coat by the works. I looked put together. We get to the door. They say absolutely not you have to be wearing a suit. So really they in a what i believe was a forty four waste suit pant and suit coat which i had to wear for probably a total of five hours. This was very by the way very early on in my relationship so it was like we're basically on a date and suddenly i'm wearing disappearing into this pair of pants so that was a negative experience. I'll say. Can i ask how i i have a comment and then i have a question. I think there's absolutely sealed the deal for your relationship and secondly who could not. It has to continue after that. Do you know what you mean. A bonding experience. Seen this person at their at a real look absolutely second my question is how long ago was this. This was i believe this twenty fifteen recently. That's amazing to me. Yeah it was and look. I have nothing against address code. If you want people to look nice great munn what they put me in was yes distracting apps. I'm sure everyone who saw me thought. Where did where did this guy crawl out of. Yeah i the the suit. The specificity of the suit is too far like. that's if someone's wearing a nice jacket and trousers. That should be enough. Also you know women come in and can wear any type of dress. that's right. well. I don't know that that's true. Oh you're kidding. I think there are some restrictions but i don't know what they are out. That would explain why everyone every woman there was a wedding dress. No that's not true. I and i also. I had a good time. Otherwise although i will say and i don't want to get myself banned from the magic castle. I thought the food was horrifying. The foods on great not at all. Okay that's good. Do you go often. I have been a bunch. I haven't been in quite some time but it is. It is like a thing that every probably every other year i.

My three favorite colors. I love yes. I love that color combination. You're talking to a purple microphone. Was that a choice. It was a choice. Yes okay wow okay. I mean that's the the this green microphone with a purple inscrutable. Mike wow gorgeous. And i've got so it's kind of a mustard yellow kind of a green. Yeah a little more grass headed into fall not the whitewater to chill of winter's creeping in season affective disorder green. Okay we're opening okay. what is some accessory. There's multiple things in here. But the thing i'm pulling out is a top hat. I mean that's the star of the show. Yes this is. I can't imagine what else is happening in this box. That would be would go beyond this hat but this is stunning yes. That is a vintage top hat that i found online. That was my first thought of a gift for you. That is a hat stretcher. That's inside that you count. Screw that even though there was such a thing yellow bridgier. I'm happy to be telling you all about these things very planning thrust of the box for now. May you know that's that's a I felt top hat so that is made from probably rabbit felt beaver felt extremely experts. So soft it's i. I think they're just they're just beautiful to look at and it's like if that even if you don't have occasion to wear a top every day it could be a thing that you can have on display would look very nice now. You're not going to throw a baseball cap on display exactly. How many top hats do you own. I'm going to say probably more than ten. Wow yes and do you have is. Do you have just the hat closet. Where are these being stored. These are being stored in their own boxes in a larger airtight container. Right oh my god and when did you start collecting them. I fairly recently actually like. I started because i. I've done a lot of sketch stuff over the years. So i have. I've always loved ads. "I have to do some light calculating right now. I want you to promote recommend. Say whatever's on your mind. I'll be right back. Okay i am going to promote while the criterion app is very good and i also think. There's a lot kittens right now that you could adopt or foster based on one of my instagram counts. That i a good good adopt a kitten or probably adopt tuesday could play with each other. Because if you get kitten and there's not a second kitten then you're the kitten. I don't have a tv show on right now which is unjust criminal. So i'm not gonna plug anyone else's tv show. But i did. I did create difficult people. And it's still on hulu so you should watch that and then commiserate with me. About how unfair the world is and what else are you ready truly. I'm ready but i'm just kind of letting you go them. Never do that ever do that. What are you have done it. The seals broken so now. I'll just do it for for the rest of our lives. No did you promote your podcast double threat. It's called double threat. Me and tom sharp ling. Make each other laugh every week so coming. Subscribe to it please. That's a great podcast okay. We have fun. it's funny and fun. This is how this game works. it's very easy. well actually. It's not very easy but the the rules are simple to understand. That's what i'll say. I'm going to name three things and you're going to tell me if they're a gift or curse and why there are correct answers so there's a chance you just you know kind of burn out flop fail and that's fine if you're fine with that i'm going to say the first thing. This is a listener suggestion from someone named brianna gift or a curse mowing the lawn curse. Why the sun lawn lawn is always outside. Always outside son is always outside. Bad news bears. Julie have you ever modal on. No okay there's the reason your totally incorrect mowing the lawn is absolutely a gift. It's delightful. it's very relaxing. It's kind of the out- outdoors vacuuming you know you put in some music. Put obviously put on sunscreen of fuming. I love vacuuming well-documented. I love to vacuum the house. The okay i like i i have like four vacuums and i do use them frequently but i don't know if i'd say i love vacuuming. I think out of all of the household chores. It's the probably the most simple and most satisfying where you're seeing results almost immediately. Yeah i could see that. Yeah and you know you're going to clean something and that's kind of the same thing with mowing the lawn. You get out there. You get to smell the grass you get to see progress the law nor tugs you along as you walk around the lawn like do you like shaving. I don't like shaving okay. Shaving is more of kind of. I wish that shaving were an optional. More of an optional thing but mowing the lawn. I don't want anyone to confuse mowing the lawn with shaving never. I'm sorry i should never have made that. Analogy appreciate an apology. I really allergy especially after you've kind of just lifted on this first one with mowing lawn. Okay let's move on and see you know. There's there's some hurt feelings here. Obviously that's fine. This is my own suggestion. Gifter occurs shakshuka. Who's that.

"I just want some sort of explanation as to why this was sent to me very awfully defensive way to say thank you. Is this a comment on. My body is a boy julia. That's fine bobby. Why did you send this to me. I don't know. I think grimace funny. He is very funny. It's weird. i'm no saying he. But i always kind of maybe the fact that i haven't seen him in years i kind of assumed he was a woman but i don't think that's right. I think he had a male voice right. He does and so. I don't how much you know about mcdonald. Land lor very little. I know about mayor mccheese of the chicken nugget children. Yeah yeah and the hamburglar that's plenty. That's a lot and then of course the cloud himself. Oh yeah you don't even mention him because he named it will not be mentioned always there. Yeah we'll grimace originally was evil. He was called the evil grimace and he used to have more arms because he was. He was designed as like a foe to ronald mcdonald. He was then they cut off like four of his arms and they made him a friend but he originally was called the evil grimace and he had six arms and he used them to steal milkshakes. Why else would you have six. Yes that way. And then the other thing i could tell you about grimace is that he has an uncle who shows up. Once a year around saint patrick's day to help him sell the shamrock shake. And that uncle's name is uncle. Ogrim assi does he look like rooms yes like identical or is there something else going on a mustache. What would you guess if you had to guess. I would guess a mustache a hawaiian shirt. Anything else you know. Maybe like like a very to pay looking to pay. He's green of foley. I was i was keeping on purple. So he's green but the same shape disagreement the same shape and nothing else was different. I think he does accessorize. But i'm not sure if the hawaiian shirt is part of the ensemble. I like that i enter. Uncle and my kukals is like uncle. Grammercy again julie. And i said okay. So this is what he looks like. He's holding a o alleles irish uncle grim missy and promote this shamrock-shaped what did expect. I mean what. I say irish. I mean he's almost a hateful depiction of irish. It looks like that anyone. This is just a lot of assumptions about the irish people. Kind of layered on top of a monster. Did you say that. He had a mustache. I did and my does. Yeah i think so. He's got like for more for happening by the mouth than grimace he rules. Does he have an irish accent. I don't know if i've ever heard him speak but here he is with his nephew. I imagine does oh so. He's about twice as wide as grimace. Notice that that's true is the only other member of the grimace family. I want to see. I feel like i've seen a lady grimace grimace family. Mcdonald's.

"Everybody welcome back to the story song. Podcast i'm dan chill looks man. I'm michael cosell every ever so we walk you through his story song and this week. We're going to do that although this is going to be a mini sewed many side and we had done a couple of minnie's oats Earlier in the year then ended up being like an hour and a half long. I'm gonna try hard not to do that this time. This is going to be an actual mini But basically there was a sonnet came out this year It was on absolutely absolutely loved the song it was in my best songs of the year. it's called kyoto by a singer called phoebe bridges But this first of all. I needed to talk about this song. The lyrics of the song are fantastic And they're just great in general but they also do a couple of things that i'm gonna get you in a second but the other thing was that this is a little bit of an experiment Because there's a the not a couple. There's many many story songs pilo suggested to us that you know we. We've thought of that are really good songs. Good story signs but not quite good for the show right. Because normally i at least i wanna have at least one kind of good take Right something right if we're if we're going to do it on the show and there's a lot of times they just they just for whatever reason i just don't have take you know. Sometimes they're they're very sad and it's kind of like a lot of a lot of times it. Is that a lotta times. I think it's it's one of those things where it's like. Why don't you luca. And i'm like i don't know if we're gonna do luca but a song about child abuse is just something that's fun to talk at the end of the day. This is a comedy show. That's what i was gonna say. That's what i was gonna say. But there are a lot of psalms that i think probably all of us know that our Still story songs. That are still fascinating. But it's it's a different take than we usually take on things and there's other songs that are not necessarily as crushingly sad as that but there's just there's just there's just not a tape right it's just kind of more straightforward or whatever so. I haven't said that that this song is. We do a couple of pretty sad so lonely boy right well. that's funny. He's so lonely right. that's that's it. Well that's true. But i mean we have done very sad songs right but there's this something there twenty nine restaurants divorce right. I mean again. Something like cats in the cradle rate like crushingly sad but there was something there to talk about so nice. It just isn't anything they're talking about so having said that so so this song would normally fall into that category. It's also from this year. Which is you know unusual for us. But i wanted again. Try this as an experiment Do a shorter episode. Hopefully you guys like it. But a song that wouldn't necessarily fit into the normal. But i think something worth talking about and like to kind of goes through the lyrics and kind of analyze them And we'll see how it goes again. It's short so it doesn't really work. Whatever you do really really doesn't work. You might not even here this head but but again. Yeah whatever again. Turn it off if you don't like it but We'll we'll keep it short so go on just because you know for our numbers but you can walk away or mute..
