David Brown the police superintendent just issuing a statement he has relieved two of the cops involved in that incident at the brickyard mall of their police powers that means they will be confined to desk duty pending the external investigation David Brown also says that he is aware of the independent investigation being conducted by cook county state's attorney Kim Foxx this is the incident involving the black woman media right who says the cops storage of the ground and a cop put his knee in the back of her neck these cops have now been relieved of their police powers thank you John keep us up to date on that five thirty eight here in Chicago on this Friday evening I go to Axios dot com every morning Mike Allen's terrific he sends out an email every morning as well it's a it's a great political website they've got great sources in DC and we welcome for I believe a first conversation managing editor David and now they're also wrote a couple of great books on the affordable Care Act David Walker the double tells how are you Sir I'm fine thanks for having me well I'm I'm glad you can spare a little time for us I was a paraphrasing part of your column for my listeners before our news break the year nineteen sixty eight of course their similarities what twenty twenty we have demonstrations in the streets we have cities burning we have police crackdowns both times there was a law and order Republican promising to end this violence Nixon in sixty eight against Humphrey Wallace and Donald Trump running for re election however and I want to dial down you have several differences between that year and this year but the one that really really impacted me when I read your piece and I like it a Lavery down at his house everything is being captured in real time now on social media and I guess there's positives to that but there's huge corrosive negatives as well don't you agree absolutely like this this is probably leading to the sense that we're just being bombarded with all of this horrible news and terrible images you know we do you know we do find out about a bad thing when it happened and we can all witness it and make you know maybe there's some positives are that that that every day every morning it seems that you know we're getting another viral video of of of violence or police brutality or something and you know even if you know it can just add to that overall please set that the world is falling apart my mind I've always mentioned that you'd probably not happy I will be my wife I mean she's gets visibly upset whenever than the latest police video comes out you know and I'm like the one now we're talking about from buffalo over the seventy five year old man gets pushed falls down hits yeah he's bleeding I mean to her you know it it ruins her her entire day and I get it that you know those police officers will have to be investigated so on and so forth that being said in nineteen sixty eight we sat down and you either want to Huntley and Brinkley or you went to Walter Cronkite unit got updated on the unrest the Vietnam War and what else was going on and then you got a chance to kind of breathe and reset and let that sink in before the next image hits you now it's nonstop I I don't know what the remedy is because the remedy is to watch shut down the internet turn off Twitter I don't see that happening but Danny's anyway to V. two a valve with this so that it's easier to take especially in bad times yeah exactly you know and and this this affects all of us but particularly those of us in the news business suit you know this is our job to follow all this stuff right you know like you know but but you know everybody needs to take an hour day or something to just to just shut it down just to know for a while because otherwise it can just be can just overwhelmed with negativity it's true that you know it in nineteen sixty eight you would be different on the newscasts and a would you probably have this overwhelming kind of feeling as well but you could shut it off in a way that you can't now because it's everywhere for all of his flaws Lyndon Johnson when he was president was not a provocateur you seem to think our current president is can you elaborate on that well that was that was taken by Jon Meacham the the historian but the comparison is you know deep you know do you have a you have a president who you know they still try to stay you know ultimately believes in unity like like Christ to find unity hard for Johnson in the state to do that too or are you somebody who kind of relishes the fight and you know we've been you know having having seen you know fifty three and a half years of the trump presidency we know that like kind of the catalyst for the fire eight you know that's who he is because I knew that when the country elected him in these times when everybody's kind of looking for like can we please get back half of the fight and like find some common ground that's where he's really kind of struggling to get out to be the person you can do that you know I I look at all the polling that I see him they do a great job at Axios dot com and you know categorizing and essentially coming up with a cumulative poll everyday as as well I want to compliment you guys on that but you know clearly Nixon said look if you want to stand this would be it wasn't present sixty eight until he was president elect after November but he said look Hubert Humphrey can't get the job done now he benefited from Wallace in the southern strategy I guess peeling off those those folks but from primarily from the Democratic Party I think but do you think the trust in the people inside the truth trump White House now are they clearly trying to replicate what Nixon was able to do during the summer sixty eight I mean absolutely you know if you if you look at the president's Twitter feed not only does he keep repeating a law and order you know compared to just tweet that over and over couple times he tweeted silent majority who knows you know that the you know the you know the call backs to Nixon are are pretty obvious end you know dirt there is a history of you know when when you have when you have violence and and demonstrations turning violent it's so for like there's you know it it it can work to the benefit of some you can say I will I'll restore order I'm gonna I'm gonna shut this violent down we're gonna get back to we're going to get back to peace but the difference is Nixon at the time was running as Louis he was not the incumbent he was you know he was running to become president right now trump is already president so you know it that's what we don't know is it is it going to work out the same for him when you know he you know like voters may say like you know some of those that happening David now there he is the managing editor for Axios dot com I want to complete my thought I would cut off track but I I don't even know whether I can trust polls anymore because the poll that we saw in November of twenty sixteen at Donald Trump losing to Hillary Clinton by four five ticks I I don't I don't I tell people every day they think there there's no way this Donald Trump can be reelected reelected that's it don't be so sure because number one Americans are reticent to fire president and number two in times of national crisis people do not want to change horses in the middle of the stream right well so you know couple things about that one is that it yeah I you know I've spent a lot of time looking into that too like we all remember what the you know what the polls told us was not going to happen when he sixteen what actually happened that's why it's a good idea to really pay more attention not just to the national polls but to the battleground state polls and you know they are young there are people who we had a pretty closely and said like if you would really call that in twenty sixteen you actually probably would have seen it happening but to the to the broader point you know exactly how we should be looking at that now to like it like it's a delight to probably still too far out but really watch the battleground state polls as you get closer to the election right now trump trouble in in the number the more you wouldn't think that he'd be in trouble you know that he quickly I call the other day is because the company name I didn't are you know practically tied in Texas like yeah you know so like I'm I'm I'm a Texan I've you know I've been watching Texas politics for years and years it's a little hard to believe that Biden could actually win it but the point is that you know trump should have put that away a long time ago and he hasn't so these are all the these are all the the indicators to watch they don't look good for trump at all right now but you know the election is not around the corner we stock five months ago I got an email from a listener kind of taking me to task for not being critical Joe Biden more often on my program and I'm gonna write American say I I don't know what to say about Joe Biden is completely off the grid in irrelevant at least at this time he'd put out a lengthy statement today I looked at the clips I thought well do I have time to play those in there but I thought for what reason yeah I mean right now you know if if what Biden totally hiding in his basement he went to cool it out the other day and gave a speech about the torque for eighty two Asian Games you know he talked about how how differently he would handle playing because as president and his top calling virtual events and so forth when you turn the national attention no that's right he's not you know you don't give him as much as the bill is the way you see president trump bleibt they've kind of we kind of realized that that may not be the worst thing is you know as long as all these incidents keep happening with president trump they were to buy into benefits so maybe he can just shut up the basement strategy well David nice so making you're going Sir I certainly I'm when you left your previous website I thought while with the why would they leave such a "He's got the best chicken Milanese in the country we're talking Mondelez corolla I think he also has the best clams linguine I've had anywhere so good and from you on the text line were also taking your call three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred police brutality was in the news today again with the release of the video at brickyard mall don't know if you saw that of two women were they smashed the windows a police state of the law of the DM windows of two women sitting in their car and there was a very rough exchange there we want to talk about that because now there's a new video that presents a different story such a P. to be on the line up for it in a few minutes here but I do want to get to the phone and talk to Austin Austin go ahead you're on WG and hi there I heard stories of a truck that satellite a cable service box and listen folks about internet and I had a story to help me do all the Comcast thing we were talking about earlier so I was knocked off here yesterday because the Comcast went down and then I I just saw that it was Comcast was trending immediately afterwards so many people had been impacted by the same thing but go ahead Austin which store yes when I was in the Air Force several years ago I was out stationed on an island and I worked in I. T. services and we had a a computer system that went down and we had no idea why and so we started using alternate connections to make the to make that the service that we needed work but we found out was the alternate connection because I could use some help next time this happens what would you guys do a well I was like what do I know the reason why the one went out was because the there was an undersea cable that had an anchor dropped on it or drugs through it and so between us and the mainland Europe we were pretty SO well there so and it's not like we had the convenience of knowing that a box was hit here by this truck and when so yeah that's the thing it's sort of the we wish you knew what was happening in may make it a little less tense in the meantime or you make a little easier you know for yeah yeah thanks for calling her a con Austin I just it's it's you know it's it's amazing how connected we are now and how much of our lives we rely on that kind of connectivity and then when you don't have it you're just what what's going on your through your lost and in that case it's even more pronounced because of the circumstances okay so let's some let's check in with sergeant Pete here because I don't know if you've seen the brickyard mall video that Chicago police were being investigated because of their response to a scene there yesterday afternoon check the leverage your earlier this week maybe it was a not sure I'm not sure when the videos from the last few days but the police busted the windows out they pulled out they they seem to pull one of the women out by her hair there was an issue there there they really seem to get very violent but I guess there's another side of the story sergeant Pete you you just I heard about some new video that has surfaced that tells a different story yeah somebody just sent me a video and it shows yep what what the M. video that the that shows the police us of doing this woman but prior to that this woman but you literally clung herself into this group of policemen and jumped on one and was punching down and two policemen who got hurt trying to pull this woman she was one helluva care trying to pull this woman off the other person that was on the bottom so it just goes to show them you know one person takes a video of what looks really bad and then another video comes out where it shows that there was if you don't contributing factors and mitigating factors to what occurred yeah well that's really does seem different than the video that's been circulating our last twenty four hours get to African American women don't sitting in their car doing nothing and saying other than maybe not following the rules of the what the police officers are asking them to get other car they're asking what for why and that's that was the story that we heard earlier and this seems like a completely different story that happened what would do you know what the time differences between that video we saw and this was it immediately before it you know I was M. E. I. I don't know whether it was immediately before immediately after the stop but I the way it looks to me it looked like it was immediately be up before they act and you got this music going from a source of assuming its writers and we are absolutely a transgendered by yeah okay that's what I thought it was a new you would not be bringing that up so I guess it is a it's an important point to make especially now when people go to social media and they see something that sometimes there are so quick to judge anybody for anything yeah well okay the the army has you by the police chase that so many people were were watching last night unfolding live on WGN TV and I agree with you that we can't be so close so quick to judge people but last night the police chase was captivating a lot of attention and it seemed to go farther than the I mean it started I think it Irving and like Cicero area over there came all the way to the south like south loop area and then went back north so many things in between that happened there from a police perspective it and you know the details the deep details on this hi what did you see there in in in terms of the police response what would you say what would you say was happening there they were chasing a stolen jeep where the driver was a suspect and named as a she shot and killed somebody and wounded a bunch of other people red denim by them they started to chase him well the chase one over hill over Dale went over everything then he ran into a gas station after he crashed and unfortunately a woman lost her life well then after he got into that gas station and jumped into that Nissan and he took off a sergeant or somebody called off the chase which is the proper thing to do because if we you know at some point the wrist to everybody else is stronger than you know you're going to find this guy eventually but even though he called off the chase the helicopter was on their wine or whatever they call it now and he was following this guy so it looks like you know the police were born north south at him as he was running back north but that the helicopter then identified worry was that on Pershing road in there like a trucking yard after he had gone over some railroad tracks he then crashed killed the cat the second car he stole then as he was running through the through the lack and from what I understand he got hung up on either Konstantinovna or barbed wire and that's how he got caught in the it only took him down and they brought him into the hospital I don't know what charges have been placed on what they have done or even if they get young man's out of the hospital yet but it was at almost an hour chase yeah it it's radically that woman lost her life total innocent bystanders in the midst of them we had to be extricated from their car by the fire department they were trapped in the car and they've got hurt so he is in you know we go ahead please we don't have a we have a policy in Chicago we don't caring people we don't have people we don't try to spend we don't surround them and slow down we don't ram on we don't have any of that we're not allowed to do any of that with our vehicles for various reasons all of which they have been one if you're chasing the guy because he ran a stop when we were young we change guys they ran a stop sign near try not whiners and it was after them it was but you know at the end of the chase it it you know somebody could get hurt unfortunately the more a young woman got killed and two policemen got hurt I know the mayor was asked about the decision to continue the chase from a police policy perspective can you explain to us why maybe that decision was made was that the right call that's going on but once once the once said that whoever called it off as the supervisor and call off the chase once he called off their chase now the cars are being directed by the helicopter to their mobile radios and they're telling me is going south on Pershing going eastbound Irving and wherever he's going south on lake shore drive so they'll just go adrift in that general direction they're not exactly in full pursuit of them because the helicopters got got him you know intent on their cameras so they know where you're at and they can just tell the police to worries that and mana ventrally when he crashed the car into the fence the police were able to surround the area where he was acting was no place to go but what's the rule on that do you continue to chase because he's a fleeing felon because because he had so many was neighborhood wanted for yourself okay you can change the playing talent a guide to murder and did things like that but once the supervisor says stop chasing now the media chase is stopped you know the fifty sixty eighty hundred mile an hour chase and stopped because the camera brown bear one has got this guy under surveillance and he can say okay he's gone south here the U. cars from the north come here and you know he the air one can coordinate all the other vehicles just around this guy it's just a well it was it's so sad the way that added so sad about what what what happened there and I just you know I know the mayor says saying that it's under investigation the police superintendent was asked about this afternoon and they're still looking into that yep in somebody continued to chase after they were ordered not to you know they violated the rules mmhm George what I want to mentioned that there's new police the police body cams that we've seen there as a transcript out and there there's some new details that have emerged from that I just want to ask your perspective on it but we're gonna pause here for just a second sergeant Pete stick around if you can and we're gonna will mention that in a couple other things going on here in the city plus we'll take your calls will go to the phone lines three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred what's on your mind something here in the show something you're.
