What's the end goal for this? The Titan of tobacco. Yes. Phil Morris, uh, knows that smoking rates are on the decline worldwide. And, you know, they made their money. Stolen cigarettes in that business is going away. And so they've transitioned slow, I think must have seen them transition towards vaping or E cigarettes. But they realized that even that is not a future that also stand them for very long. And so they're looking to go what they call to a nicotine free initiatives that will be part of their smoke free future, And that includes buying up companies that have raised some eyebrows. Yeah, this is sort of the definition of conflict of interest. How quickly is Philip Morris hoping to turn a profit from this sort of Beyond nicotine business model for their goal, they say, is to earn $1 billion in revenue by 2025, which is would be a very small Piece of their overall revenue They make about $28 billion a year. The new CDC guidelines indicate that elementary students and staff will still need to wear masks but vaccinated middle school and high school students and staff do not. We checked in with Seattle public schools about that It is the largest school district in the state, and they go back to school. September 1st. Right now, for summer school students and teachers all required to wear masks for indoor classes when everyone returns to the classroom, though, this fall Seattle public schools says it will continue with the current mass policy requiring everyone K through 12 to wear masks. And that's based on the Washington Department of Health guidance. But when WH implements the new CDC guidance Seattle Public School says it will then remove the mass requirements for select students. We talked to parent Hannah Selanne, who has several young kids attending co elementary school in Seattle. They're all under the age of 12. And we know the kids aren't able to be vaccinated. Yeah, so I do appreciate. I think the kids being masked, especially my kids being having asthma. I don't want them to get any triggers. Critics say the surge and the Delta variants. "Shantelle just how important has sue bird been to the storm success this season I think she is that veteran leader for them. There aren't many players from see the floor like she does. down. I think what a great point guard does is they elevate the play of everyone around them and she does that and the players around her fish and so whether it is a two point, sixteen assists game or whether it's ten assists sixteen point game she's able to contribute and ways statistically that are really impressive Vegas. You know she is that due north for them in terms of bringing the team forward, and there aren't a lot of players in sports that have that personality both on and off the court for their team, and I think emotionally just the way she leads for this team i. think a moment that really sticks out to me from the season is in a semifinal series against the links Alicia Clark scored a game winning basket service shoots. Lucia Clark gets the huge offensive rebound puts it back in and the way that sue bird kind of raced her after that game she hugged her and like raptor hands around the leashes head. Goes. There's so much respect not just for on the team but the way she respects the other teammates around her and I think they feel that and they see that when what would you say jumps out most you when you watch her play at this point in her career I, think the way that she anticipates that's what makes her so good in. So effective as a point, there are times when it's like, she can know exactly how many strides Brianna Stewart is. Going to need to get to a certain place and she gets the ball there. So that Brianna Stewart if she's taking four steps with her long stride down the court, she catches the ball exactly where she needs to exactly and shooting form and she can go up with it. So nothing more terrifying imagine for an opposing coach than seeing sue pick dribble at like the free throw line and getting ready to launch it down court because it's kind of like. Well, that's going to be a bucket because she's able. to, anticipate and see the floor in a way that defenses can't stop. You can put yourself in good position but the game is constantly moving and her ability at Xuan dissipate and know where and how her players want the ball. It's unmatched.

WNBA Finals: How Did We Get Here
"China it's great to have you back on ESPN daily. Thanks for having me. Pablo good to be here with you. It's been a while but I kind of want to ask you about what time has been like for you. Since we last talked because this WNBA season, it was a truncated twenty, two games a sprint that started in late. July. So does it feel like the finals or here already like so soon or is it kind of leg? The finals are here at last after forever it's finally happening. It kind of feels like the finals are here at last because you gotta think the conversation around whether or not. There was even going to be a WNBA season started in like March, right? When sports was shut down. So we thought we were going to have a thirty four or thirty, six game season. There was supposed to commissioners, but it didn't seem like at one point there was going to be a season at all. So you have to tip your hat to the wnba Players Association and the WNBA Commissioner Cathy. Engelbert because they were able to create this bubble in braided in Florida Zero Positive Corona virus tests at a lot of fun basketball. So but here we are finally in the finals. Yes, and we are at the top of the mountain and so for those who aren't in the know China, how did these two teams get here? Very different path. So Fiat came into the season. I would say the favourite amongst boasts because they were getting sue bird back into their lineup. They were bringing back a steward both players Miss Todd, last season of due to injury, and this was the Seattle storm team that despite not having those two players not only did they make the playoffs last season but they actually one game of the playoffs. Also keeping in mind that there were Wnba opt-outs I believe that four of the top five vote-getters from last year for MVP did not play this season just a little bit different looking landscape than we may have expected coming into twenty twenty wnba states or a pandemic wnba season. Should I say? Las Vegas Aces were interesting case they were picked to finish fourth preseason. Now, Bill Beer has a ton of talent on his team I mean a number of number one picks lottery picks. He added Angel Cartridge this season, which is a huge acquisition after she of last year. So you know we knew that Vegas would be good I. Don't think we knew that they were going to be finals good but the play of the MVP. Asia Wilson has been incredible this year and you just have to tip your hat to what Vegas has done. Yes. So Asia Wilson is who I wanted to follow up with you about because she won the MVP. This season Brianna Stewart finished second in two thousand eighteen stewart was the MVP and Wilson was the number one overall pick in the rookie of the year. So we have this collision of stars, Legit Stars, and what do you expect to see out of the battle between them? I four both I just think it's fantastic for us to get a sneak peek into what the future of the WNBA is going to be over the next ten years. Asia Wilson Umbrian to Stewart are the future of the WNBA and Brianna Stewart obviously has already wanted wnba championship. She's been in MVP and you see Asia Wilson really coming into her own as as a player in this league but when you look at the Style of these players Brian Stewart six four can shoot the three incredibly versatile likes to play in space moves well, without the ball Asia will on the other hand she's going to play fifteen feed in likes to bang very physical. A ton of an one plays and I think that's what made as Wilson's performance this year. So oppressive is that you know that she wants to score fifteen feet in, but you cannot stop her. So you mentioned before that Radha to Stewart Sue bird injured in two thousand, nineteen year before that Seattle had one at all and it feels like they're stronger for their path year. So the bench on this team clearly has to be super important. How deep is it? Oh, they're incredibly deep I believe sue bird said at one point that they had an entire starting lineup coming off of the Bitch 'cause they could essentially start their second five at any given game. Now, keeping in mind that Seattle is going to be without Sammy Wickham in the finals and I think that's a huge loss for them because she's a big spark plug is a streaky but can be a great three point shooter but you know when you look at the development of that supporting cast that we talked about earlier without Subarea Stewart has was the Defensive Player of the year. Jordan Canada led the League in steals. Last season Jewell Loyd has been fantastic in even in these playoffs shooting sixty percents from the field in her three playoff games including two twenty point performances issues a former number one pick. So the cover does not bear at all for for Seattle in not to mention a leash Clark who is one of the great defenders in a wnba right now, they've got a lot of depth in their inner lined up in their rotation on the roster.

"Merrill is a senior writer for ESPN and spent time with Sabrina UNESCO in her family last year for an in-depth profile Liz gets called generational talent? Now sometimes it feels like every top prospect every year gets called a generational talent but with her. It does not seem like hyperbole. No it's not. She's the real deal. She is sort of the Serena Williams of women's basketball. She can shoot the ball. You'd ask you three out. Topped the net barely move. She can dish out passes with relative ease. It looks like she's not even trying cut by over us into double figures at a great pass by ZIP on her passes they get there so quickly and then she can crash the boards UNESCO rebound. She's opened for three it. And you look at the stat sheet and all of a sudden. Wow this kid has thirty points ten assists and ten rebounds and you didn't notice because she makes it look so effortless people are taking notice. Celebrities are taking notice celebrities. Have come just to watch her and the Oregon women play Which you would have never really heard of that. Ten or fifteen years ago like male professional athletes taking the time to meet her or give her a shoutout. I mean this is an example of game recognizing game. Well what have some of those other athletes said about her well Steph? Curry has called her. A legend Libron has called her queen and said that she so dope. Kobe has had. Actually you know gone to meet her. Him and his daughter had seen her play. And what evolved? There was a friendship. You didn't necessarily see that crossover before you know when you did in in times past. You're like wow if you ever saw like a male athlete especially the best of the best. When you're talking about Lebron and staff in Kobe I mean these are guys who've actually seen her play and have taken the time to either go on twitter. Whatever venue and to praise her play. That's a pretty big deal. You know. Even Gino Auriemma said. She's smart. She waits for you to make a mistake a lot of lot of guards. They go so fast that they don't give you a chance to make a mistake. She goes at a pace. Where she waits in waits and waits. When you screw up. She takes advantage of and that's saying a lot for from him who has seen so many great players. I mean every time you think of a great women's basketball player. We're almost always talking about somebody who went to uconn. Be Terachi or BRIANNA STEWART. Or Sue bird or my amore. We're almost always talking about someone who come from that program. Now we're talking about somebody who plays for Oregon and it's not like Oregon is in the middle of nowhere but it's not an easy place to watch basketball because they're on the west coast. You're not GONNA if the if they are on. Tv A lot of times. They're late but yet a more and more people are getting to know about her star power and the fact that you've got all of these these guys who are at the best of the best. You've got Lebron calling her queen I mean that is that's being displayed to all of his millions of followers. Some of the praise that she's received you just. You don't see that you haven't seen that in the past from other women's basketball players. Cobi not only praised her. He actually broke down her game for us. We'll look Sabrina and say okay. She's great handling the ball. Of course us. She's great onscreen roles. Of course she is but what makes really dangerous is that she can catch and shoot to right so she can move off the ball. She's just as dangerous. Doing this. Offer catching shoot. She was asked about him after his death and had this to say I mean everything I do. I do it for him. Obviously Really close friend and this season's for him. What was their relationship like so she met him he. He attended one of her games and over the past year so they became pretty close. She admired his game deeply and vice versa. He you know obviously Kobe with a daughter. Who's really into Basketball that was sort of a bond a she was really emotional after Learning of his death She dedicated that next game to him and kind of broke down just talking about him before we get to this season and what. Sabrina 's accomplishing. I WanNa talk to you about how this all began. How Her story starts? You did a big profile of Sabrina. Last year you spent time with her and her family was she like as a kid well so she had a really unique background. Her family's from Romania. She didn't grow up there but in nineteen eighty nine. The was a revolution in Romania and her father. Dan wanted to leave the country seeking political asylum and so he left for Northern California leaving his wife and their two year old son Andrei behind. He went there sort of for the American dream to kind of provide for the family told the family told his wife. Hey hopefully I can send for you in six months. Got a cab job and was trying to make some money now. That six months a turned into five years five years past he by this time he has turned that cab job into his own limousine company and he can send for the family. So that's nine thousand nine hundred five two years later. Pair of twins were born A boy and a girl and Sabrina came I of course because she would end up being sort of the bossie sibling of the family. And then Eddie came. I think eighteen minutes later That really forged her path having a twin brother who played basketball and the reason they started playing basketball was because both parents worked and maybe it was a simpler time but her dad would drop them off at a park down the street and Walnut Creek and she just started playing her. Daddy would play with other kids. Klay Curry COMP. Exactly she was the one bringing the curry. Okay say you know I was first recurring there you go. She'd get knocked around a lot and she do some knocking herself and sheer. Her skills really evolved from that street basketball into what we see. Now which is one of women's basketball's lead. I mean they got so good that they would start hustling older kids or even adults for like money. that they would use to buy slurpy and you know they speak Romanian and so they could actually Kinda have their own code when they're playing or even if they wanted to make fun of the players that they were playing against they talk to each other in Romania. Hate to use the word tomboy but she was You know her. Mom told me when Sabrina was in junior high. Some a counselor called and said hey you know. We're really concerned about her going to high school. Because she doesn't really communicate with any females. She over friends or boys and her mom's like yeah whatever. Okay I'll get right on that and did nothing. Because she knew that she was developing this young woman who was strong who had her own voice and did what she wanted to and was really good at it so her size helped them in that hustle. Did it lead to her being underestimated when she got to junior high and high school she was but by the time she was leaving high school and being recruited obviously she was heavily sought after. Shit. Yeah She. She wasn't the first person you would look for on the court. She wasn't necessarily anything spectacular By any means but once you saw her play in what she could do a lot of her stuff is like you know the old fashioned elbow grease stuff where you know she the reason. She has all those rebounds is because when she played with boys she never got the ball and so the only way she was getting the ball is if she somehow muscled her way in there. The family is not a basketball family. Didn't even know anything about basketball before they came here and even in those first years they. It wasn't something that they really knew. A lot about coming from Romania. Pretty much everything she has gotten has sort of. Been off of this whole work

The End of UConn's Dominance?

Tonight we've got uconn women's basketball ascot ball versus Tennessee to traditional powerhouse rivals. Though hasn't been that case for a while now and for you on in particular. I think it's been an interesting year. If you haven't been paying attention to Uconn over the last few years you might assume that they're just gonNA blow them out like they blow out everyone but that hasn't been the case recently. No no it has not and in case. You're checking the trophy case. There has not been a national championship. Kinship Trophy in stores over the last three years which is reason to panic honestly Meena. It's all relative to Connecticut. Success asked him they have eleven national championship so the standard is always going to be national championship or bust. It is a story line for sure because we used to be able to just check the box pencil in Connecticut. Moving right along but has more gray hair right now than I used to. Seeing this group Pez definitely tested the boundaries of what we know to be uconn success and so it should be an interesting game Tennessee mm-hmm so they're still very good. They're just not worldbeaters the way they used to be. I mean there's there's sixty one and they have not how lost to an unranked team since two thousand twelve so like our expectations are almost like it's really kind of ridiculous Gino's talked about it for sixteen and one. What do I have to answer why? We're not waiting for why we missed so many shots or why we turn the ball or why I like what I thought the object was to win the game. These right like the goal is to win we're used to seeing Yukon be Yukon like b-teams by fifty. Not some of the questions that were asking about their program. You should write because there is a kind of fall from grace. They haven't made it past the final four in the last three years after winning four straight national championships but to say that Connecticut is not a good team and some of the other things. We've heard out here. That's just to me a little bit of a stretch. I think you make a good point which I know. which is it's? It's more about the standard the expectation and that this program set as recently as the twenty sixteen season they went thirty eight zero but it was after that as you point out when they started to slip a little bit. When did that I begin? The recent slippage to me has everything to do with the graduation of Rian Stuart. Poynter the Rian Stewart is a player like we have never seen in college basketball. He's most outstanding player of the final four four years years in a row. When you look at Connecticut success it's been connected to great players like Brianna Stewart won four of those eleven championship? It brings back in two thousand thirteen. Diana went three for you. GotTa try more with two seven. It has won the national championship. Dino said it himself he once said hey we have Diana to Rasi and you don't now is the difference between them in the rest of the country and or time. That was everything and that to me has been a key to their dominance is having that Maya Moore bringing a Stewart Dinas Rasi easy when so the conversation even if you go way way back and look at the history of Tennessee in Connecticut. For example that then women's College basketball did not have have the depth of talent in my opinion that there is now so it was like if you didn't get should be Coleslaw. Good luck if you didn't get Rebecca Lobo Good luck so so what we're seeing now is not just about what you con- is not but that other programs are competing recruiting Asia Wilson. WHO's the number one overall a player coming out of high school goes to South Carolina or Haley Jones? The number one overall recruit goes to Stanford then the conversation starts to change so now there is more good players and as you're saying they're more spread out across programs. Do you think any of them chose not to go to uconn because of you know the competition in a successor. Do you think it was just the product of other programs grams. Making good cells to them. First of all Gino's not for everybody when I watch game film. I'm checking what's going on the bench. Somebody's asleep over there. Somebody doesn't care hear. Somebody's not engaged in the game. They will never get into ever and they know that I'm not kidding. You know. I mean his his coaching shing style. The expectations everyone is not cut out for that. Breanna Stewart calls out NCAA for lack of respect to women's game during March Madness
"But first a brief rant and listen. I could go on a lot longer than I'm going to keep it. I'm going to keep it quick. But brianna Stewart called out the NC double A for their lack of respect for the women's game. During March madness, she pointed out that the March madness handle tweeted out Ron Swanson gift and said when you find out there are no March madness games until Thursday mad face hashtag Sweet Sixteen there were of course, women's games. There were eight women's games on the twenty fifth. And even though the March madness handle says it is for the men's tournament and forces women to go with. The NC double A WB handle most people don't know that. And March madness is gender neutral. It is it is not about the men's tournament trademark to the men's tournament. It actually started with high school hoops. And so when even that handle if they want to say, we're bummed the men's games aren't playing go. Check out the women, that's fine. But the idea of constantly being the default. So that when John Moran has the first triple double since dream on green, and no one mentioned in the men's tournament. Because Sabrina UNESCO is has eighteen triple doubles this year and just had one in the tournament last year in multiple women have recently, again, it's not about people not understanding. It's about giving context. So that you can give props words do when people say that you NBC upsetting UVA is the first time internment history will no it's not because the Harvard women did it in the nineties. It's not that hard to say in men's tournament history. It's not that hard to add men's and how do I know? No that because women always have to do it. We always have to add women's to everything. And I think when you have schools even schools where the women's program is more successful than the men's and they always had to add the W or the women's to their handles to their social handles. They always have to add the modifier. So people know they're talking about them. It's insulting. It's insulting to say. Lady. Huskies lady giants it's insulting especially when it's something. That's a male thing. Like stallions lady stallions that makes no sense. That sounds like an unfortunate accident for the horse. But you know, what I'm saying? And again, people push back so hard on this. When I tweet about it. They say, oh, you knew what they meant. Well, why is it so difficult to add a modifier so that you say men's tournament women's tournament? Because then you're at least respecting that there is another tournament going on. And that those women are working just as hard putting in just as much time. Whether or not you want to watch them whether or not it's your priority. Give them the respect that they're that they've earned and to me we see this all the time with Little League World series. Perfect example, are they the best at what they do of anybody in the universe know, why are we interested because we tell people the stakes and we tell people the stories when we do that with women's sports for the Olympics for the World Cup for Serena Williams, when we give people the stakes and the stories people are interested.

WNBA Playoffs: Players to watch
"The WNBA playoffs have kicked off y'all, and this was a truly a historic season for women's basketball. I mean, I certainly believed the postseason will be no less exciting as we've seen in the first round of games. So guys, let's just skip to the finish line and tell me t- who you got winning at all and why? Yeah, I think that this is probably the toughest WNBA postseason that we've seen in a minute because every case, every team that's in it actually has a case for why they could win it. I've been on the sparks his bandwagon for a while because my city no longer has a team. The Detroit shock is no longer a team. So I've just been jumping back and forth. I know right, like and I was cool when they went to salsa as the Tulsa shock, because at least they kept the. Name, even though they were in a different city, but now they're the Dallas wings and I just don't feel comfortable sharing for another city like Dallas doing anything. So I just keep jumping around. Yeah, that was definitely a shy just. So I just keep jumping around and I've been on a sparks. His bandwagon for the last couple of years is I really just felt like they have been a complete team. They did win it, but now I'm really hoping to see a Connecticut Seattle. I just think that it would be the alternate number one, the autumn ease versus whether she can't get more easily. Connecticut can't get more west Seattle. So there's that then for me, there's the Yukon factor to see brianna Stewart and then super to see how that dynamic is. People here love their Connecticut sun, but they also love their Yukon huskies. So now you're actually giving the fans a little bit of a side to choose between the two. And then lastly, because our grow today, obviously she plays for the sun and she'd been missing for like family. So my dude, if you don't be missing for like fabulous rail, bring a championship.
