"We. Aren't those things. But we're just lying to ourselves. That i'm not if i'm not courageous. I could never do that. Of course you can't fly right like of course you're not gonna be able to lift a house up. But that doesn't that's not the traits of being brave or courageous. You can do that any time again. All exist within you. And that's why. I think we like the idea of superheroes so much as We just don't know that it's already within us. Yeah we were all superman. I think honestly if we could if i could wrap this conference this entire conversation up into one one phrase. It's one of my favorites from the buddha and that is the mind. Is everything what you think you become and that. That's everything if you think you're angry you're angry if you think you're this you're this you know but the point stopped doing that or become aware of it make it happen or not make it happen less as em even tripping. I feel like there's not even really good words. Not even a good vocabulary too. I like sawyer. I like the words notice and acknowledge. And i think those are two very powerful words in a person's so called practice notice what's happening reconnect with this moment. Truly realize that. That's you this moment as you. Well bryan that. I think that's a good place to bring it to a close brian. Ifs ready wants to get information for you like to talk to you and maybe even get some advice from you. "That's okay bad day not feeling good how to shitty sleep. Maybe there is something technical. I can't wrap my head around that needs to be solved. There's something there's some work thing needs to be done requires lots of mental energy. I didn't have a good sleep and rundown scott of this other stuff. It needs to be attended to life. Hats emotions happened because of but the more that we let go of the stories then it becomes much more like okay. Chop wood carry water. Can't do both at the same time. I'm going to chop wood. I carry walk. And i'm not going to be disappointed that i can't carry water on show at the same time in it really. Is that simple. i wish it will. I wish the simple but it's not easy. It's yeah exactly and that's the thing you know like but that's again that's another thing i've had to let go of because i constantly try to think like how can i explain this to people so it'll be easier for them to understand right because that's the problem that's really what it comes down to. It's not your responsibility. I mean that's the ryan's that you can never make someone do something you can never make someone understand you. Rather they do or they don't again. Everyone's biological conditioning has an effect on how people understand you. Italy the the intellect and the emotional iq vocabulary and just the mental capacity where we all have different all spectrum so we need to just meet with people where they're at and if someone isn't at where you're out that's cool it's just where there doesn't mean that's where there will always be out right because all that there is is change in this world of appearance it's all change all impermanent every thought every emotion every body. It's all nothing but change. So what is the point. In trying to grasp onto what is imminently going to change dissolve disappear wither and die..

"That is appearance new are gap which enables the appearance to rise first place which is not the body doesn't the eyeballs which is none of the senses it's not which is seeing through the eyes st awareness of it but even the of true just the awareness you know and that's where Actually language i think has confused. Humanity is the way nouns and verbs have not. Of course we need this language. It's up but i'm saying it trips us up. Because we were taught that every sentence needs a subject and object and an action and those are necessary in describing our experience so to speak. But it's not the reality seeing through that conception again just coming back to the here and now and what is happening and you don't need to describe what's happening it just needs to be noticed and recognized and the more that you recognize what is truly happening in the here and now specifically most importantly what's going on in terms of thoughts and the energy of belief the energy of wanting to claim something as mine the energy of wanting to reject something or deny something anything that revolves around these words. I mean meyer. Mind the all point to an energy. That is distracting. You from the reality of yourself of yourself are now the distracting. You from right here right. Self is now right and i find myself when i talked to people about this because of course you know. I don't know what it is about having this epiphany or or coming to this realization. That makes you want to help other people that was the thing that happened for me is almost immediately once i started getting and understanding. At least what is being said. My first reaction is like this is great. I feel better but it's not just enough for me. Need to help other people do it and something. I've realized over the last year of.

"So i did that and buddhism to me seemed There's many great teachings but it also seemed altogether too much like a religion to religious. There is too. There's too many shows and should do this. Don't do that in too many practices recitations and it was all just seeing just so steeped in a tradition. That was very much cultural. That i had no relativity to whatsoever just didn't resonate with me and so even though i tried to practice buddhism for awhile. It seemed very fake to me like i was. I was faking something. and so. and that's around the time when i actually hurt the word And i didn't know what invaded announcement. I soon found out it meant non. Duality which is also what then was talking about. Zan was talking duality. So i'm like okay. So there's some commonality here. So i started reading about I soon discovered street. Neither maharaj three of arshi all the more modern teachers. Of course like muji and shanti even eckhart totally of course. Sometimes namedrop said veda dental or he's talked about zan. He's talked about non. Duality solve a sudden through ad. Veda some things started to click primarily with neeson gotta maharaj really through him. I then started to have like piff news with everything i'd collected. Conceptually regarding zen zen started to make sense i went back and started reading zanuck realized that all of these things are talking about the same thing so to speak. Using different language different words different descriptions different cultural rappers and i was confused by the rappers but but the seed of everything that was being spoken about was what compelled me when i was in high school and that kept on pointing back to that so then i discovered a few other teachers. That were less consumed by tradition. And that's when kind of the allowed to do that. Almost so then i started to really do my own self exploration inner inquiry and kind kinda just went off on my own and the website and podcast that i have been thinking all of that poured out of this kind of discovery phase where i will just went on a two year two or three year. Nonstop.

"Thanks for being here man. Extra avenue kabir So for everybody tuning in. Let me. Just give you some context. Brian thompson was the host of the zen thinking. Podcast and the reason that that is important because his podcast helped me get through the lockdown during covid and was one of the first podcast types or audio sessions that Helped me understand a little bit better when i was in the early stages of doing Learning about zen buddhism but Brian today man i. I'm really happy to have you here. And you know we had a little sidebar conversation prior to this so what i'd like to talk about Is briefly as you can. Just give me some context and background about and how you got involved as well a little bit about me. I live in British columbia special little area called the sunshine coast which is only accessible by by boat or by air. But a forty minute. Ferry ride from the big city of vancouver on the west coast That's where i'm coming from Zen wise where i'm coming from is i never knew anything about zen. I never even heard the word until i saw. The word appear on a book in a bookstore. When i was like great. Tanner eleven and i don't know what it was but the words zen just seemed magical to the. I didn't know what it meant. I didn't know what it was by. Opened it up and it was just full of nonsense. That was so intriguing. I bought it brought it home and read it front tobacco. Five times had no idea what the heck any of it was talking about but it was still. I don't know couldn't couldn't shake it. It planted a seed in me that i needed to understand where once this nonsense they were talking about so for a couple of years in my teens. Try to meditate as this book was trying to teach me and i found it challenging yet calming in my teenage years but i never i never got beyond just this initial intrigue and then in my twenty s You know the life starts to happen. And i kind of forgot about zan. Even though i'm still philosophically curious about the nature of being and the universe myself and what does this all mean but you know i went down the path of what most twenty year olds do and you know socializing career and all this kind of stuff so i cannot. I lost touch with it for quite a while until i rediscovered Probably about fifteen years ago. I kinda rediscovered it. When i was one through like most people when looking for spiritual answers your had a rock bottom so to speak or you're suffering or you're confused her so i started studying again independently and i still didn't have any idea what it nets. What any of the stuff net. But again i. I just kept on reading it was there was something there so then i thought well maybe. Maybe i'd be to explore buddhism. Little.

"This. This is being being content. Just being right like. I don't let's not even add anything done. It doesn't even have to be contended. Says recognizing your own presence of yes and all that it entails like in every conversation right like this is something that we always talk about communication and relationships. I feel people don't even understand what they're saying when they say that like i don't know about you but have had so many conversations with people where now i'm so much more self aware of i've whatever i've this being has become more self aware and in that i hear words when people say them and i often wonder like. Do you even know what you said or did you even think about what you said before you say it and i catch that way more often now than i ever did before and the reason being is because i recognized that when people talk to me i'm thinking now listening to them listen to my my head and then that's way like somebody asks you like. Don't you remember this conversation now. Of course don't and we don't admit that to ourselves and we certainly don't admit that to other people that's usually what's going on. Yeah is a skill and it needs to be developed and most people have never even considered that it's a skill or that it's important to relationships or even important to their own presence being because if you are inexperienced truly listening then that means you're inexperience with yourself. You're ignorant you are ignorant of yourself your ignorance of others and suffering arises from ignorance so truly listening and that's another thing that meditation sounds like. I'm trying to sell meditation. I'm just i'm just saying is that it's It's one of those things that a person can do. That can wake up a flood of realizations that you wouldn't have in any other situation where you're Anyways yeah lost you were onto you. Were under a good spot. There and the thing i'd say about meditation is that it's it's like It's like a tool you need to get from this side of the river to the other side of the river and use a raft. But you don't take the raft with you once you've gone to the other side you use it for what is needed for. And then it's the same thing with me meditation. I used to do it all the time and for ourselves but then i would be suspicious of the one who says i don't need it anymore. Fact through i mean because that that means there's them at energy of claiming that i don't need that valuable tool anymore. That's just the type of inquiry that i do. I'm very suspicious. Of the i that i present to myself from two others not not physically but in what am i. Meaning when i say i in this everyday talk you don't really have to think about that when you're interacting with the world so much or do you mean you should you mean again like what's your agenda and if you when you can meet a person with no one no agenda you know like there is true openness. There is true love beauty. And it's like new you. You can juicy people european i can see myself in. There is.

"Because they're uncomfortable with silence. They're uncomfortable with emptiness. They're uncomfortable with just cynic. They're uncomfortable being that. Capped so meditation kinda wakes us up to these these really energetic beliefs and just things that are behaviors. We you know people say oh. I'm not good at meditating. it's like there is another story of meditating. it's not a sport it's It is just a way to look at your own self. And the thing is is for people to ask or talk to about meditation which is most people and usually responses. Why can't do it just like as you said. And i asked him why can't you. Why can't sit still for that long. And the reason why you yes it. Yes as a if you took up. I'm like that but that's what that's forward. That's why i'm like do not notice the subtle anxiety. You have your so uncomfortable in your own skin. You can't sit down for five minutes. It should that should be so revealing to you in for some. Obviously it is but from us. It's not they won't even try because it's like. Oh my god. I gotta sit and be quiet and to thoughts and a lot of people say well. Yeah i notice. I notice all that stuff but i don't know what to do about it. It's like well good point. You don't know what to do because there's nothing to do except for noticing it and recognize and accept it and what you accept becomes more apparent the next time it's encountered sudden blinders. Start come off and you start to see things more regularly and that reactivity starts to die down and there starts to be more more space around things more space around emotions more space even around beliefs even like i still catch myself. Almost daily like saying things other condition behavior all. I always do that. Almost the second. It's coming out of my mouth. I can now almost laugh out so much of what i say. It's like don't believe a word i say. This is all just entertainment. this is i mean. That's honestly this is all just entertainment for us now. Anything comes out of the mouth is just like it's it's not essential what is essential.

"You have an agenda again. that's something to notice. Nothing needs to be done with any of these things that we're observing just notice and when you notice you notice more often and the more that you notice. They're going to be a. Oh what i noticed. That energy is serving me distracting from my being so notice the agendas we have in. Many agendas are completely irrelevant to the spiritual discussion. I have an agenda that i need to prepare some receipts curve taxes empty. That's completely empty. So but if i were to say i have an agenda that i whenever and all of a sudden there's a little pulse in my heart. It's like ooh that tugged at something. That has an agenda. Let's let's look at that so you know. And that's why we keep saying coming back to the body. What are you feeling like paying taxes yet might make me cringe of it. And if i actually wasn't in tune i might push it off another week and then it becomes suffering. Because i know that i have done this thing but i keep pushing it away because i don't want to you know that's the thing that we do ourselves but if you're just say taxes to be done let's go do them without that agenda without thinking the sow painful. It's going to be this thing. Yeah i went off on a tangent. There and i forgot what we were talking about with. Just i'd just been making points about suffering you. Pretty much nailed them all on the head.

"It's like well. This is like an age old meditation question. Can you feel your the seat. Can you feel your feet can feel your toes. What does your right elbow feel like crap. He feel your left ear lobe. Do this all of a sudden realizes. Oh i can feel these things and there's an energy here that we're calling focus focus shifts with where you place it with the mind so to speak. But what if you don't place it anywhere. What if you're not focusing on thought all up in my head and when you are up in your head you just tried to feel the hair on your arms that brings you back into here now because you can't imagine that stuff it's like it brings you into this moment and this is the moment where freedoms there's no freedom outside of this moment absolutely so so bringing people back into this moment and trying to just stop per second stop the stories but on pause muji always used to always says but down your stories you can pick them back after this call is over. They're not gonna go away. Trust me you can't make them go away. They're they're they're up here in the brain and that brain. It's gonna keep spitting them out until you officially norger believing in them and they're no longer relevant to things that are no longer relevant to you will no longer come up so of stuff is coming up here now in this moment. What does ignoring what good does it do. Is just going to perpetuate your suffering. Because it's coming up so we need to resolve are unresolved issues. And i don't mean going back in like what it. My mom say to me when i was ten years old all of that kind of psychotherapist stuff. That's just treating the symptoms all of these stories that we have their symptoms of a deeper problem. Which is that. You're not in tune with what is real which is just this moment here now. Empty of everything. And i'd like to share with you just for a moment in my viewers or listeners have already heard the story a million times but For me what happened was before knew about before i knew about any spiritual notations whatever i was suffering from. Ptsd but the problem is i was just angry and.

"So these walls are the self limitations that we keep confining ourselves in you know even something as simple as lazy you know if you started saying that when you're ten years old because someone told that to you and you believed were your parent or guardian or a teacher and then someone else said it to you and then all of a sudden. There's this reinforced conditioning. That's what i mean by conditioning. Something you believed that has shaped the way the mind conceives and perceives and projects. That god onto what it's taking in. It's all subject to to what we're doing with that when it arises back into consciousness and to expand on that. If you were working with somebody how do you help them. Works for that because like you said you can't turn it off there. It's not it's like your heart right like you can't stop your heart from beating just like you can't stop your mind from sinking. So how do how do you help. People work through that. Well that's i mean that's part of it. I mean what you just said in the lao to the last part of what you said was helping people realize that you actually week aren't responsible for your thoughts. You don't create thoughts and that can be a huge on moment for many people is like you don't put thoughts in your head they disappear. You are the one aware of them. And of course this is where people start to fall back onto their stories and saying. Yeah but yeah. But i'm thinking right now when i planned to save this and of course this year and if we go into self inquiry we can even break down that illusion that i know what i'm going to say like i don't know what the next ten seconds i really don't. Even if you have something memorized plan to say this chances are it's never gonna come out the way you know. Life happens things. change life is spontaneous. And that's kind of what i really help. People to understand is the the truth of awareness. Is recognizing spontaneity of the here and now letting go of your judgments letting go of your opinions. Not denying them because that isn't your reality. it's accepting your reality as it is here and now not pretending to be something and not wishing you or something accepting who you are here now right now and that is how you help people is. Where are you right now. It's like all. I'm lost in my head and i've got all these stories often. People say well let me tell you about my life situation. My stories no. I i don't care about. I mean as as a humid. Yeah i do. Of course. I care about what you're going through. But when it comes to these types of talks no your stories mean nothing they really don't and if you're if you are convinced that your stories mean something then that means that you will continue feeling this way for many years. You have to stop relying upon your stories your judgments in your opinions of yourself. Europeans are other people europeans of the world. Let go of all of it for this moment. Breeze.

"True. We realized that it's the stories that were holding onto that is causing the tension the uneasiness struggle without those stories. Where is the struggle. So you know you. Could you see someone you know. They're having a bad day. They're all up in there leaving sleeve and use ball in my head today and everyone knows it. When you say you're all in your head you know what that means. There have like a tough day. It's like we know that and yet we ignore it. We believe the escaped from our troubles lies in more thinking while it's thinking that got us into problem in the first place and here we are. I don't know how old you are but here we are decades later in life. And how's that going for you. The whole living in your hat. How's that going for you. Most if you're at a place of so-called success in life you sale what's going very but then you go home drink yourself into oblivion and why are you drinking yourself into oblivion well because there's some suffering that you're not in tune with so now you're trying to cover up. What is all up here. It's not in reality. it's in this. Illusory world of the of the mind so so placing so we need to see through our reliance on thought and see it is the cause of our what we call suffering without steph of mind. There is no suffering so seeing seeing that as as a as a intimate reality of your own experience of being you can then stop. Placing reliance on thought and. Stop believing thoughts that are arising within mind. Now is a lot easier said than done because most people instantly believe every thought that arises with mind. They believe the thoughts because they've been doing it their whole life. It be has become a a matter of repetition of behavioral conditioning. That's just been repeated and repeated so there's not even any space between the thought appearing belief it's like they they almost arise like together as one so when people start doing the work of meditation or self inquiry or just just slowing down and just noticing their own.
