"From the land grant university in havana. Champagne illinois this is the housing market report. It is the very first day of september. Twenty twenty one. I'm illinois extensions. Todd gleason coming to you from the farm progress show today. We'll have a great show. It's jam packed. So let's get straight to the numbers december corn today at five. Twenty two and three quarters finished eleven and a half cents lower the march at five thirty one and three quarters down. Eleven september beans. Twenty-one lower twelve dollars seventy seven and three quarters november twelve seventy seven three quarters as well. It finished fourteen and three quarters. Lower and january. Twelve eighty seven hundred quarter down thirteen and a quarter for the day. The being meal at three forty three seventy down to seventy the being oil for the day at fifty eight thirty one dollar and a nickel lower and the soft red when read at seven dollars penny down five and three quarters of a cent on the afternoon live cattle futures in chicago at one twenty seven fifty seven and a half sixty seven and a half since fire the beater cattle at one sixty to ninety two and a half down seven and a half cents and lean hogs at ninety dollars. Fifteen down a dollar thirty five for the afternoon. This is closing my before. Brian stark now joins us to talk about what's been happening in the marketplace. Thank you brian for being here at the farm progress show and taking the time with me today on this wednesday afternoon. It's been a beautiful farm progress show by the way however not such a great week in chicago. I to really threw a wrench into a lot of the marketplace. What is it meant for basis to begin with on the cash. Grain situation side. I think the first implication When we recognized how much damage it had done to a couple of the major exporters facilities in the gulf The sieff market Backed away quite a bit. Which is your gulf market basis for export and with that interior market started to soften we've since stabilized income back the last couple of days but the market as a whole is questioning. How much demand. We're going to be able to generate now and what the world will be able to count on us exporting. That's the million dollar question. And i think because of that you've seen funds in just orderly selling pressure happened to the market when yields in a big. Usda report monthly report. Coming out friday upon us. We're taking some profit and grinding lower with that expectation to more of the unknown can be quantified with our demand base. How long do we think that will take. But we know next week or the week after where the market recover roughly speaking or continue to grind lower and what would either look like her. Tell us why think. Naturally you've got a strong inverse especially in the eastern processor ethanol arena that has to merge some point over the next three to four weeks so naturally basis is going to weaken two new crap levels. The question is how steep. Or how cheap is it going to remain. And i think that's the question you ask is it. One week to week is the three weeks. I think over the next couple of weeks as we start to survey the damage realize you know how will be able to pivot some of that. Export demand will help. Tell the story. But i also think friday's report from an update on the yield perspectives. And what that looks like as we get into harvest will tell a lot about the supply and is that demand base and right before we got on the air we talked about is china. Going gonna come back. And and that's the general wildcard from demand base where we'll have to wait and see so for producers and you both do you think that they have sold enough corn up front. We've talked about an awfully large sales. I think to this point for delivery in the fall that it can meet the needs of the marketplace in the near term. And what does that mean for that part of the crop that they have not marketed yet. Personal opinion. we've talked a lot about that. I think the producer has done a decent job. I still think that he was holding out for another shot at six dollars. Corn which never materialized. And i think maybe he's just a tad undersold overall but i think that third forty percent sold of expected production. But i think. The key is the expectation In in a lotta areas in the east. We know we're staring at record-breaking crops. So i think if the crop becomes larger you may see some more natural selling pressure where the market tin tends to grind lower in the producer should probably take advantage of five dollar corn if he cannot store it if he's got the ability to store it that buys him some more time because we still don't expect unless demand really falls off post-harvest For the market to get really cheap basis wise even with all the space that has to be filled from this large crowd anything to discuss from the soybean side. I think from the perspective that that that is the bigger challenge. Because i think normally we'd start to see china command as a major by rabin's as we enter september. I think the large South american crop has kept them pointed. That direction are natural. Demand is generally october and ford through february when they start harvesting their crop in the southern hemisphere. The concern on the bean side is will. We see demand be delayed to the us. And i think that potentially could cut demand overall if the south american crop is normal. So you know beans even though we were tight feels like we're adding some Old-crop demand being cut adding some supply back into the carry in so similar to corn. I think if you feel like you've got a really big being cropping can't store it. I think the smart thing to do is to take advantage of the cash market and look at maybe some paper place to replace it. If you wanna stay long thanks so much. Brian have a great day todd. Youtube brian stark is from the anderson joins us here. On the closing market report from the farm progress show. Jackie holland joins us. he's the grain market analysts for farm futures. And about this time actually every farm progress. Show if you've been listening to them for a while you'll hear farm futures talk about a study they've released as it's relates to the coming years. Acreage you've done that. What did it show yes we have. We are looking at higher acres for both for all corn soybeans wheat next year Our study found farmers to be very optimistic about the current price environment They're looking at planting ninety four million acres of corn About ninety one million acres of soybeans in forty nine million acres of wheat. So we were a little bit surprised to see numbers that high but again with profitable prices. there's a lot of uncertainty and especially kind of looking at some of these more lucrative corn and soybean double craft Are up we and soybean double crop rotations on marginal more marginal ground outside of the corn belt. We think there's a lot of opportunities for acreage. There where are you finding that primarily. Is that coming generally will come in southern illinois for sure But other places around the midwest as well or maybe in the delta or somewhere else We think that there's probably potential for cotton makers down in the delta to come into play. But also i think the plain states are going to be a huge factor in the acreage battle. Next year. there is a lot of livestock that was slaughtered this year especially with the drought. So there's a good chance that we could see some of those forage acres come into row crop production and are they likely to go the wheat i that is our suspicion especially with how high wheat prices are and just how tight those stocks are becoming. What are you telling producers about pricing.

"Able to manage water flow and slow it down so in order to take those nutrients up. It's it's really cool to get the pig weed and then we get to the corner and we're still with crops. We are still with crops and as important as it is to understand the weeds. A lot of us depend upon pesticides to try to control those weeds. And we have maria turner here actually setting up her display as we talked today. And there's a great pesticide safety demonstration there as well as look-alikes that we have you know. Sometimes we have farmers treating things they really don't need to so we will get the chance to learn about some of those look-alikes then we moved some animals but small animals ticks We actually have a great demonstration on The ticks illinois. We have a a great research project going. On with. Dr theresa stickler looking at How ticks kerry anna plasmas. We are actually dragging some of the Pastures here in illinois. So if you wanna learn more about why your cadillac performing quite the way you want to Please stop by. Yeah in fact you may have heard me report with Theresa sackler about and plasmas and the blood draw that She's been doing in concert with the illinois beef association to see which herds are are not infected with this particular disease. It's really important. Folks understand how that works and so the beef cattle people should drop by and see us and they'll see a whole bunch of other things. Keep working your way around. I think four h. is up next. Four h. is right in the center. We certainly wouldn't want to leave. That out wasn't important. Part of extension Comments the four h. exhibit. Especially if you are an alumni We have a four h. photo booth. That's going to be in place Come and get your picture taken. So we're so glad they joined us at this end of the ten. As we continue our way around We moved to crops of illinois and even though we always talk about corn and soybean because there are so important to the state of illinois other things as well we have some pumpkins that may be here as well some horseradish We also have In addition to that We have indian corn some of the ornamental that we have we do have corn and soybean as well and as we continue working our way around Really important is farm safety and issa's allies here with his team. He has demonstrations on. Pto safety and also grain entrapment. It's so important for the farmers as we get ready to start harvest and we fire up our machinery again we start fighting are bins that we remember you know these very important rules to make sure that we're safe so folks can drop by and see those just to remind themselves how dangerous a pto is running inaugur and how quickly if you happen to be in flowing grain. I think it's five seconds or something thereabouts. The you can be and And we've got displays here to help folks understand how quickly that happens and how they can go about moving grain safely and then we move into some sick plants listening. We really had hoped. All our plants would remain healthy all year long but that wasn't quite the case and especially in those areas that may have received a little more rain than others We're going to have four microscopes. Set up here and if you want to know what happened to some of your plants why. They lost their color What i'll why you lost all that leaf tissue. Hey here's your chance. She'll actually get to look at the microscope. Look at samples You'll truly be a crop scout by the time you leave and for those who want to walk out of here with an illinois crop scout sticker We'll take care of you for that. The last couple of things up or involving master gardeners. I think there are a couple of things involving master gardeners. We'd be so remissed because todd. We are standing right in the center of the display at this end of the tenth and there is a wonderful horticultural exhibit and it is includes a number of plants and it's based on pollinators pollinators in different areas Come and see what you can plant. Regardless of what the location of the right plan selection for pollinators and ways to really beautify your yard or your farm in addition to that there's going to be some information From the horticulture team and the master gardeners as. Well a little bit of something for everybody you know. I don't know if they'll come out of the south end of the tenth. I hope so. Because i'm on the north end of the tenure us at. I liked him to drop by. I'll be there all day long during the radio programs a whole lot of the brokers and a bunch of the folks that we just talked about will join me on a something like stage there. We'll talk throughout the day. Thank you so much for all the work you've done. Thank you timing extension to. I am so looking forward to the next three days. I hope for those folks who come on out. I sure hope they shot by. Indeed that's ross higgins. He's with the commercial egg team. Stop by and see him. All the rest of the commercial extension team the folks from the university of illinois campus as well and myself tuesday wednesday and thursday here at the farm progress show. Let's take a look at the cash grain situation on this monday afternoon. Brian stark joins us from the anderson. Thanks brian for being with us. What has the market been up to for the day markets under some pressure with the unknown from hurricane ida hitting the gulf last night and today and obviously taking out potentially representing some potential logistical challenges for exporters. And i think you're seeing that in some of the spread activity we've seen the nearby spreads sep december corn sep november soybeans. I don't think a lot of fundamentals of change in the market or still looking towards the crop progress ratings to see if the crop. We'll take a small decline across the bill. Given the hot temperatures we experience last week but most of the day's trade actions been on the unknown and what logistics are going to look like in the gulf in the coming week in basis locally reacting all basis is fairly quiet. I think there's there's a lack of bids at the golf. I think locally. There's still some strong demand trying to bridge. The gap in the next couple of weeks before harvest commences at the local corn. truck processor Being basis been soft the last couple of weeks seems like the end users got better being coverage transitioning to new crop fall than he does on the corn side. what are we seeing for. Soybeans soybeans Just about the same I think Same type of issue with logistics. I think obviously the market is anticipating unchanged too small decline crop progress ratings. and really. They're looking for the next Rounded demand to kind of prop things up here as we move forward any advice as we go into the last couple of days of august for producers. I think the biggest thing for the producer is to find an opportunity to Take advantage of scaling up selling if your crop feels really good most producers in east central illinois. I feel pretty good about their crop. And we've been recommending getting up to that forty to fifty percent level at these type of prices if they do feel that way and i would encourage them to make some stair step sales even when the market has has been softer in the last week. It feels like it's going to be arranged bound. Grinding lower market through harvest until we can quantify the exact crops is. Thank you and i look forward to talking with you here. In the farm progress show university ten sounds good. Look forward to it. And that's brian stark. He is with the andersons. Joined us here on the closing market report for this monday afternoon. "Farm progress show. Let's check now. The cash grain situation on the ground in champaign county were joined by brian stark. At the anderson's i brian. Thanks for being with us today. Thanks jeremy dad. Well tell me about basis. And how it's been reacting over the last couple of weeks. I would say in the last week to ten days Being basis is certainly on the old crop side. Felt a lot softer as convergence starts to happen between old and new crop as we get closer to september first corn sold and then a little bit firmer Obviously there's a stronger end-user demand right now on the corn side. It has been weaker at certain spots. But not as prevalent as the being side here as we get closer to To new crop harvest or farmers in general now standing aside of the marketplace. I think for the most part It's been quiet. We've see a little more new crop activity in the last week to ten days Maybe steady sales. I wouldn't say A big increase As the markets kind of eroded here over the last few days with some of the announcement specifically and corn Regarding epa mandates. And what that may mean for demand. we've been a little quiet on that end and for the most part. Oh crap is just about buttoned up. As far as sales to be made yet what's your thought processes that relates to storage in the grain elevator. That's your business And but farmers ought to do is to think about marketing that particular part of their crop. I still in the camp of taking advantage of sales as long as New crop corn values are get five dollars cash and.

"I was thinking. I was talking to somebody. The other day about the The insurrection slash riot on january six and the few cops that have killed themselves since then. and then. now we're going to politicize it. We're gonna say. They killed themselves because they were involved with this. But i was kind of politicized. Well they're trying to say these are deaths. These are because this thing. They're trying to get a tally going or the cops kill themselves all the time. Sadly could it's a it's a high. I argue everyone laughs at me. But you have a gun on your hip all the time. I would kill kill myself nine times before twenty-five if i hit it just a gun on my hip all the time by the way i interview people all the time like taking the stuff i wanted end at all so i drove down to the coldest sack and i brought my tylenol with me. I was discovered if that guy had a gun on him. We wouldn't be hearing the story about. I wanted to so. I tried or cry for help or whatever but anyway and i was thinking to myself. I think if. I was attacked at a a riot or an insurrection. I thought i'd probably be good like in two days. But that's that's my wiring. You've been peed on. I've been a lot worse than pr shot upon. I just said it doesn't. It doesn't affect things down effect that i had a miserable childhood and all that kind of stuff but i i don't feel like killing myself. I don't i don't need to take to twitter and talk about all the pain and everything and i'm trying to think like they arguably everyone's been through something sure. Why does it engulf certain people. I've got a rose. Mcgowan went through. Whatever when rose mcgowan was fifteen or whatever it is or kathy griffin. Then the names go on and on how come some people. It's so greatly like in the clutches of it like it's always thirty seconds away from they are and others are just like the shit happens and on top of that. Why does it manifest itself in comedy because as we all know. A lot of comedians are damaged in a lot of ways itself in a in a comedic point of view on the world. I'm gonna make a super nerdy argument. That i'm way out of my depth on so maybe brian stark can help me out. But think about like comic book superheroes some some challenging dark thing in their past and they want to right this wrong in a super overcompensating way and i feel like if it's not just for know. Look this is my identity. Now it's it's that kind of batman factor. Yeah i don't. I don't like in comedy like you look at the brennan boys. You've had neal brennan on the show. I'm sure right. Probably kevin breath. But i think there's like ten kids in the family mostly boys and according to neil it was a really traumatic dysfunctional situation that he has dealt with Throughout his life and his brother kevin goes the fucking talking about. It was fine. Yeah you can have different. Interpretations of the same childhood neva. Yeah yeah it's almost like personal space. Like i don't have personal space. It doesn't bother me. People push me or put their hands on me or or do things to me. It just doesn't. I don't have a reaction to it versus some people. It just really freaks them out or really really puts a main to another orbit and i. It's not me being stoic or anything. It's just i'm bothered like like my labrador isn't bothered by shit. You made an outstanding living complaining about your childhood for the last twenty years. Yeah but i'm happy and rich because of it all worked out. Yeah the neal brennan the brennan thing is an interesting brings up an interesting idea. So there's a documentary called on. Just melvin just evil. It's really great very raw. A rough around the edges. But it's a excuse me a great control group. Because there's old dude named melvin. He serially molested like ten of his daughters. We've talked about. This may have talked at ten dollars. All molested ritualistically for decades and now they're all adults middle aged adult and they have very different reactions to their dads some love hands on absolutely hate him and i want to confront him somersaulted of the nine towards him some forgiving like it. The same trauma can affect people in a control group in different ways. Yeah all right geiger. You're always talking about the documentary. It's good love talking about as a little weird trying to say. Well he's trying and he's essentially making a case for molestation not so bad. A third of the girls will be fine. The crotch of the beholder jack. So when you talked about space one of my one of my favorite moments the office is when ellie kemper is on and she's upset so she puts her hair over her head. She's just kind of making noises at a restaurant. Making run uncomfortable and michael's what are you doing shoes. When i grow up in foster care my hair was my room. she's upset. She oracle trey parker and matt stone. Big deal signed with viacom. Cbs's mtv entertainment ios that calls for them to produce fourteen movies for paramount plus fox news reports that the pact also new south park until twenty twenty seven. Any guesses on what this deal for. Six years is valued at palm. Gotta figure sixty grand movie times fourteen cost. We're already about eight hundred and fifty grand on open. Get an extra five hundred bucks episode voices. Yeah well the premiums or per diem right right right right. I think if you're on the road but if you're if you're local twenty is it safe. They can submit cps for coffee like that uber and then so then so the movies again. I work in the industry is biz. I got a pretty good pretty good handle on this stuff. So sixty grand spot. That's eight forty. Then we figure again maybe a little signing bonus. Five hundred. Six grands sweetly. They'll something there and we talked about food per dams. Well let's just call it a million bucks for the for the fourteen hundred takeoff ten percent now. Would you say two thousand twenty seven so we got about six years they put out like how many episodes i mean we talked about. I was gonna say south park thirty thirty five year. Twenty two episodes a year times Sex and also we're talking about like one thirty two or something like that gotta figure at least nine hundred bucks an episode..

"That's where I'm wondering how much of that was bad. How much that was John? And how much of that? Are we missing now? Going forward. I mean, it seems like you're having any front office shake up and and a little bit of redistribution of responsibilities. Which this kind of is a little bit of that. You just wonder how much maybe Vic Fangio has to kind of take on in. This is where we talked about that. And he even talked about that first day in the season that he would maybe have to do a little bit more in the interim. As they're trying to figure out the reshuffling of this thing and listen, where we're at a point now or post Senior Bowl, there is going to be no combine. This is the time you're putting in that work. You're not putting your draft board necessarily together. It's probably a little early for that You haven't had free agency yet. I think George Peyton's primary focus probably is on either free agency and or his own guys. You know what? What they can get done to bring back Justine Simons, Shelby Harris, etcetera. So the draft at this point, my kind of just kind of falls in the scouts. I mean, seems like Brian Stark might kind of have to head up all of it at this point, until they get that director of Pro player personnel it. Yeah. And then figure out the you know, giving up the responsibilities in a way that where that all goes, I know I'm looking forward to seeing how it shakes out in that regard. But, yeah, George Patton's I right now is on making sure to re sign who he's got to tender and what the free agent market is gonna look like He's not ready to look ahead to the draft yet. I imagine. After February they'll start doing that He'll start getting in the weeds there, so maybe you will lean on John just a little bit. It's really prostitution, all knowledge that they'll be they'll be leading on and that I like I said, I anybody who thinks that George Payton is the John Elway puppet don't know what you're talking about. I mean, that's so ludicrous, like, Wow, Ludacris that you wouldn't know what you're talking about. But that said, I don't think that George Payton is gonna completely shut John Elway out the building, You know, obviously can't cause he's still here in under contract for a year and a different title, but I think you'll lead on him for some of this stuff. There's institutional Holiday that you want to have for a sense of continuity of purpose. And so you know, I think that with with regard to the draft is gonna be interesting to see the division of assets division responsibility and how exactly that shakes out versus previous years because they had a philosophy that they'd hit on the last two or three years that appear to be working. Yeah, so people, I think oftentimes will be excited about some fresh blood excited about a new perspective in the building, but that doesn't necessarily mean It could mean that George Payton is still his own man, but can also simultaneously mean that he's not coming in here with the intention of blowing up all the progress that this organization is made of last couple of years. Now, he'll maybe have his chance to do that. Next year, the year beyond that, But at this moment when people can talk about that red, sure you're I think one of the things that we probably needed to factor in was the fact that it doesn't even have his right hand man just yet in the front office. And and really the divvying of responsibilities. So like the draft, and so on, and so forth, like, he kinda isn't probably involved with a lot of that just yet, because he's got so much on his plate with just getting understanding a baseline of this roster. Yeah, I talked to somebody. Um, in the front office. Early this week, and they said that he's glued to the phone. It was funny because they're like, Yeah, he's glued to that phone more than you are talking about me and my goodness, he's impossible. He's an addict. Then, if it's uh, if that's the case, but they said, Yeah, he's glued to that phone and he's you know he's constantly working on doing stuff from there. I will say this as far as that open slot, whether it's director of pro player personnel, whatever it ultimately ends up being And entitled, the Longer It drags on, the less likely that his champ Kelly, and the more likely it is his body. His buddy from Minnesota, whose names escape get the ball. It starts the J. Um but you know, and that would be the longer that drags on, the more likely that's who that is, OK, I want to get into a little bit of quarterback care so and some of us want to do with the Broncos, and some of this will not necessarily be a Broncos thing. But I want to kind of roll through this and I want you to give me your As of was a February 3rd February 3rd your best guess On where some of these quarterbacks are gonna land and how serious some of these teams are about moving their quarterbacks because right now there's a lot of rumors. We got the Derek Carr one earlier this week at the Kirk Cousins, one that's out there. The Jimmy Garoppolo one who the heck knows with the Bears are gonna ultimately do the Jets that one popped up again last night on the show. These are a lot of teams weren't were on him getting to like the Saints who definitely have some decisions to make. They put out today that James Winston might be a guy that liked to bring back and another intense on starting him. But this guy they want to bring back so I like to kind of throw out some of these names and some of these teams and get an idea from you at least right now where we sit and what might Be of interest to the Broncos is doing Okay, started Dak Prescott. Because that was one that you brought up this week. It got a lot of buzz because people started talking about it. And you said that would be more of a next year. Kind of conversation will be Dallas, you think are As close to committed Because again they could be in a position where they want it. They want to trade up. They want to do something in the draft and move on. Rather than franchise tagging a player like a quarterback 1st 2nd straight year, which is a pretty massive investment. They'll franchise him again. Whether or not they get something done, he'll get franchised. On If I was back, you know what pride play on the tag. It doesn't mean you can't go back. Dallas if you don't want to. Hold out. The market's just going to keep going up. 185 million this year in salary cap. It's gonna go up next year. So if your dad Prescott, you play on the tag And then you come out in free agency next year. What? The market did you up? The Cowboys want to keep you? Well, they got a match it I to me. It makes no sense this year..

"Just need to have all of your ducks in a row, and they were bringing the coaches back into the building. Presumably, he finishes through lock evaluation and likely went through. Every player on the roster and did that evaluation and in the last week we can change since he got here. Once you get past his media responsibilities, I mean some of his personal stuff, and then you look at the way the Broncos were drafted the last couple years. Assuming you believe Brian Stark is the head of college scouting had some influence on that You kind of trust your people Todos their job Well, and he was the internal candidate the Broncos interviewed and that obviously carries some weight. You have to think and so George waiting because he's been kind of it every every level of scouting department. Understands what it's like to empower people right and just because we think he's maybe gonna bring in some of his own guys the way he made it sound was he's gonna let everybody around here, earn their job right and keep their job. And so if you've got this many people down in mobile, especially with the access being restricted, you guys can speak to it better than I can. I don't know. Do we know what the face to face situations look like? I know it isn't a free for all that we're used to seeing in the hotels there and mobile. Where where the players stay every year. At least, that's what I think it would be respected. So it was probably one single. He's like I'll get all the practice kind of shiny. I'll be able to watch, watch it when they send out all the links and then be able to ask all of our scouts that are down there and Brian start. Who really stood out Who do I need to take a second and a third look at and meanwhile, I can get to know my coaching staff and what they need and what they think of the players and does that match up with my beliefs. On each guy after doing doing breakdown, So I think it's more of a timing thing versus having the convenience of everything being in place. Which is something that John Elway and that Russell had the last Yeah, they're in the situation here is, uh, you know, less than ideal in terms of what you get with the face to face time, but it is still there. Still, teams get face to face and bubbling off these guys, the free agent market, You know, that's gonna be a situation where you're just not going to get that. It also could be the zoom thing That's gonna be tough, like it really is gonna be tough to determine where these guys are a locker room fit without getting the face time. Yeah, And this is, he pointed out, and I think that we're all realize that same challenge everyone faces is somehow there was 11 team or a handful of teams that could get face to face with guys. That that would be different. But if the league rules are the same that even if let's say you're the Miami Dolphins, one of the three teams in Florida and you couldn't drive the although Florida schools and all those SEC schools that are nearby Obviously, that might be a violation of league rules right And so you'll be able to get to the pro days, I guess, And that's probably we're going to rely on. I just can I get a snapshot of this kid, but this is where you're gonna have to rely on your relationships. And so you hope that George Payton doing this many years as he has is able to call Coaches that he knows all around college football and ask them. Hey, what can you tell me about this guy? Or that guy? Or why should we consider this guy? What kind of fit is he? And then I assume we're talking about free agents as it relates to two. Pros or college free agents that you might like like Annie saying, Vassili people like that. Well, I mean, all free agency and in general, I mean, you're still going to get the medicals in the combine. But you're missing those interviews, the best gonna go zoom and then the pro free agents. I mean, you're really not gonna get anything but the zoom. You're not gonna get any updated You know, situation where you can sit down and talk to him talking about their time in the league or whatever, so just any of it, not getting face time with people and not understanding the person that you're about to hand money to for you, whether it's a traffic or whether it's a free agent is tough for a team because what you're really trying to assess is who is this player? What does he do? And how does he fit within my locker room? And we can all tell if a guy could block or throw or catch a ball or whatever, but you don't know if that person is going to be somebody who takes football seriously. Or somebody who's just using it as a means to an end. Yes, I'll go back to it, and you know this as well as anybody, Then it right, You start Melissa's well. Is it like many things, there's a relationship business. So this is where hopefully George Payton and the rest of the staff, but George specifically can rely on his relationship. The relationships with agents and people around the league. Now, you can only trust an agent so far, but they're certainly agents that you would trust more than others right that they're They're also looking out for the best interest of their client. And assuming you're not the only first offering their client a job. They're gonna want their client in in a place where they will be the right fit and thrive because that only benefits them as an agent. I know this talking some agents after George Payton was hired and talking to some players who asked their agents about him. They said that he's a good guy, right? The report keeps coming back, so it's gonna be different. But I also think that the Broncos in a lot of ways are in good shape with their young roster that they do need to bolster some areas, But they don't need a complete roster overhaul. Like some of the places where the shot Watson Manda, he wants to go to the Jets. We've heard That roster is terrible, right? There's like five guys that every team would want and beyond. That is like yes, I think that guy so they're gonna be in a much tougher spot. You have to Shawn Watson has a big recruiting. That's a really good point. I think that needs to probably be mentioned more often, and I know George Payton mentioned in his press conference. But I mean, for all the hand wringing about the results of the last few years, we can all agree that the roster and the cap Is in pretty good shape for what he's taking over versus some of the other teams around the league that are old and they are heavy, and they're not gonna be able to get out of it very quickly. Okay, As always, man, Thank you so much for the time. I really appreciate it. You guys can't wait to do it with you in person next year and mobile safe travels back home. "That comes from an organization that has done some winning. Right? Apparently, he's not part of it. And the other guys you have left in May and I say I weigh these guys out to say, you know, Champ Kelly is kind of The guy out of this Right, so that there's two separate problems. One that champ Kelly is considered the guy but also was that say about everyone else? That the Broncos air hiring the guy for New England? Bill? Bella, check real them back in, so he's going to stay. And be the assistant to build Bella checks, so he's out. They got one guy Brian Stark, who would be an internal higher, promote promotion, and I don't think anybody looks at the Broncos right now and stays that people need to be promoted John Elway. And then you have, um Another guy, the guy I look at that, say what? Who would be at the top of my list. Oh, the other one is George Patton. I'm forgetting about George Patton was with the Minnesota Vikings. Less than impressed with that teams. Track record, but it would be quite on brand for the Denver Broncos to go. Minnesota Vikings route right? Shermer used to be their case. Keenum used to be there. George Patton. All three of those guys were there at the same time. So I don't like the optics of that. But one guy, do you look at that is interesting to me. Is Terry fun now? I've spent a lot of years with Sean Payton in New Orleans. Why is he not the number one guy? You have a hard time thinking of the bear successes through the draft. About New Orleans, Michael Thomas. Having tomorrow. I want the guys they got on that front seven. With the Saints, whether they were drafted or where, there they were brought in as as free agents. So why is he not the number one guy? Comes from one of the most successful franchises in the NFL in recent years. All I can think of is that he doesn't have a close personal relationship with big fan Joe and John Elway. Which to me? Should not be a disqualifier and it didn't disqualify him from getting an interview but is clearly disqualifying him from being the front runner. And I look at everyone else that the Broncos interviewed and I say this is this is the number one guy. This is the guy. This is the guy you can sell to your fan base. Sam Kelly. Whether it's fair or not, is it would just be viewed as an extension of Fangio and John Elway to very unpopular people right now. Carafano would be the true changing of the guard that the Broncos air trying to make you believe that they're embracing. It all right, but all I can think of other than the personal relationship with Elway and Fangio thing. Is that font? No, is not as serious about the Broncos is. Maybe the Broncos would like to be about him. You know Terry Fondo as a chance to run the Falcon. That's a bet that's a better job than the Broncos. It is. It's a better job. So maybe the Broncos in in there, you know the people in the media that like to parent what the Broncos organization says maybe they're pushing. Sam Kelly more than Terry Font? No, because there's a sense within the Valley. That fund. No is covering his bases, and he's not. The Broncos aren't number one on his list. But again, I ask the question. Are the Broncos serious about a changing of the guard? Are they really trying to bring in somebody that's going to offer a different perspective and be able to make big decisions like whether they keep drew up? What they invested in the draft. Is Vic Fangio long for that job? These major decisions that the Broncos need to make is the incoming general manager. Actually going to have the freedom to make those I still I'm not convinced. Terry Font. No would be that would be Hey, we're bringing in somebody from an organization that has been better recently than ours has Long track record of being part of a really good front office. He's going to come in different conference different division different part of the country. He's gonna come in fresh perspective. Look at everybody objectively. And say. This is what we need to do. Where is Champ? Kelly is going to come in with his buddies Vic Fangio and John Elway. And not be coerced. But again, does he have the freedom that the Broncos are trying to make? People say the new GM has 5 to 29872 got a few minutes before the Top of the top of the hour. We'll get to some of your thoughts. I have a lot of thoughts on the NFL on Nickelodeon, and I don't want to short change myself. And I'm sure you guys have thoughts as well. So maybe we'll just take some text messages. I got a few out there take those before the top of the hour and we'll come back and talk about and it fell on Nickelodeon a little bit later, time to 29872 back after traffic.

The Broncos GM search is now down to three candidates after the team held their initial round of five interviews. Virtually Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Assistant Vikings GM George Payton, Saints assistant GM Terry Fontanel and Bears assistant director of player personnel champ Kelly should all receive a second interview this week. Both pain and Kelly can meet in person with team President Jo Alice president football operations John Elway. And head coach Vic Fangio. But finding a second interview will have to be held virtually again after the Saints beat the Bears yesterday, thus keeping him in the league's cove in 19 protocols. The other two candidates both had good interviews, according to a team source. But New England assistant director of player personnel Dave's Eagle is being promoted by Bill Belichick to replace his old boss, Nick, his area now with the Texans and Broncos director of college scouting. Brian Stark will not have a second interview, either. "Gary Kubiak recommends Jordan made, um So you know, there's there's I think it's honestly I think it's those two names with Terry found on third. That's what that's the way I feel and the other names are not real contenders. Dave Ziegler's not gonna get this job. Um and and so, you know, I think that if you're looking at this, and um askew go into this. There's a scenario where if you like them both. There's a scenario where you could come away with potentially both of them. Oh, I'd love that love that. Just a thought. Just something to mull around hasn't been brought up yet. I'll be gone Most. Everybody to this point is either said that they wish there were other names. Some of the bigger names that John Dorsey's of the world out there They mean, it didn't seem like that. That's really direction that they wanted to go. They didn't want to go with the Over established former GM of a team They wanted to go with one of the more the young up in coverage. And I guess that begs the question then Ben is that is that likely the best. Decision for the Broncos. They the wide net, the critical white net or a lot of guys that that haven't been G M's but have been right there and they've taken interviews, and some of them had experience with this organization. Some have not. What do you think about the neck that they ultimately decided to cast makes a good net. I think they have good candidates and there. I would not have interviewed Ziegler with the rest of them. Um, I understand what they're doing. You know you and getting a different perspective from a different organization. I think that if it's me, um You know, it's interesting to me how in this particular search people like, Well, they didn't your view people with previous GM experience. But when you get to a head coaching search, it's the opposite. They're all like We don't want to reach red. And so I find that amusing. The disparity between the two I think that all these guys have plenty of experience. They've all been around and in front office experience for a decade, plus, most of about 15 years. So you know if there's a scenario, which you could get two of these guys, you feel both of my qualified enough to have general manager If you get two of these guys in your front office to me, that's that's a no brainer. And for that, to happen would be paid. This gentle manager and champion is pro papers Now where you move up from assistant. Yeah, promotion for both right. And then that would be opportunity. And you be basically looking at the future of what would be your front office right there. George Payton has a connection to Had Sherman Yes. Uh, Champ Kelly has connections to Nick Foles and Vic Fangio and John Elway. Um, you know, And so I think that either one of those guys in the scenario where you could get both, I think are ideal. Okay, So let me ask you about Brian Stark. Who's in the in House candidate and and the right now kind of slated the interview last, which is sort of funny. The only reason I bring up is because the last two coaching hires a John Elway made corsets. Coincidently, the last people he interviewed Beings. Joseph and Vic Fangio ended up being last on that group. So I'm not saying that it's good news for Bryant Stark. But I guess if you want to make a last impression, that is where you get a chance to do that, But Let's just take this on its face here if they decide to go with Brian Stark. What does that say? Says they weren't impressed with the other candidates. Okay? Says they weren't on the same page with those guys and the in house guy was on the same page with where they wanted to go. Is that because there I think a lot of Broncos fans will be a bit underwhelmed. That's not just taking with a way for Brian Start because I think Brian start deserves opportunities as well. I mean, he's done a good job scouting for this team. He's their director of scouting, but The fact is, people will say it's gonna be more of the same in that respect in this team has been losing so people will find ways to complain about anything. Well, they've already started to complain about this group. They're under out there. Let's just say there are they even named a general manager. Yet they haven't even interviewed. All these guys had their already complaining. That's that's what that's what hater, you know, Hater. Ade gets You hate a radio. All those guys, you know? It's just rip rip everything find a way to complain about it. We're not gonna do that here. Um, the it says that they weren't on the same page. I don't think that's gonna happen. And I think that the reason you're interviewing him last because you're giving everybody a chance to, you know, to convince you otherwise and then go to the gatehouse guy. The the reason that they interviewed the head coaches last Was because they did like them. They were the prohibitive favorite little bit differently. The gentleman's situation. You look for something to replace you not submit a report to you in that regard, you know, um, a decision maker. And so John Elway had some favorites. And he decided to let the other guys interview first to convince him and move him off. That favorite not have did With this particular situation, I would suggest that it's not the same thing. Having someone go last is not the same as it was during the head coach stuff. In fact, it's coincidental. I know I'm just I'm just having a little bit of fun. This particular situation I would almost say would go the other direction. Could be favorites would've interviewed first and then well, it's certainly based on your reporting. I would say that's I would say that in the favorites interviewed first in this scenario, Okay, So you know you're the first person that's brought up the idea of of multiple guys here because you're right. It would be a promotion for both put and I, You know, I think that that is invaluable. I think that getting Smart guys like surrounding yourself with smart people is a way to be successful. You know, Find yourself smart people that are capable of disagreeing with you Surround yourself with those kind of people and you'll always be. You always do well. I don't have any year contracts. Are you looking for these guys like for whatever the GM because I mean, certainly there's a lot going on with his organization from the ownership side of things. Obviously, you're talking about eventually John Elway stepping out altogether the organization if not next year than around that time. Certain..

"So I think that the splash you make is by saying, Hey, there's some really good players here. And even though I came in from the outside We're not in the habit of letting our good players walk, and then the quarterback thing in some ways will work itself out. But to answer your question, I don't think a new GM has to make a splash move unless one like addition, Watson trades out there but to make the move just for the sake of making the move, I think is You know, kind of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Okay, Well, let me let me narrow that in the top 10 pick that this GM has that could be seen as an opportunity for a splash. So I'm not saying to make it for making its sake. I'm saying utilizing what is at your disposal? And saying top 10. I'm taking a quarterback that splashing. Yeah, yeah, for sure. And if they like Wilson, if they like train, Lance Great, and it does reset your quarterback, financial clock. And that personal compete with drew lock. And if drew beats about then you've got a trade piece. That was a top 10 pick, and I don't know what we'll know a lot closer. To the draft where people really think Wilson and even fields and train lands are because we thought when, right when we hit the senior Bowl, we thought your lock was definitely gonna be a first round pick. I think he did. I think everybody did. And we weren't sure where Daniel Jones would fall. But we got to be way later. We didn't know about Haskins. Everyone knew Kylie was going number one that year, but that was it. So there's a chance that Wilson ends up jumping ahead of fields of fields. Maybe it's injury otherwise, but doesn't play great against Alabama or if fields plays great than the fields versus Lawrence conversation. Gets going, But Wilson could still slide up and train lands. We've only seen play one game this year and S O. Don't have a problem if they if there's a quarterback that is, can't miss, but we know Having done this forever that no quarterback really is. Can't miss top 10 quarterbacks tend to be better than quarterbacks below the top 10, and you can look at just the quarterbacks in the playoffs and where they were drafted. But there's still no guarantee, and I think you could do a lot with that pig. I am leading if he's there, and you may not be towards Patrick's or 10, bolstering that cornerback spot if he's there at nine. Yeah, I've said Parsons, Ser tan or trade back is he's probably the preferred methodology there in the reason for that is if you wanted it back with lock and probably a veteran, you know, potentially Nick Foles. That gives you the opportunity to acquire draft capital to move around the next year. If you do need to go get that quarterback and so this this premise that the general manager needs to come in make a splash to me is ridiculous. Isn't the general manager hiring in and of itself splash enough of me? Broncos country was telling me John Elway was the reason the Broncos were losing to begin with. Yeah, And if he comes in and just says we've got some good pieces here, we're gonna add to them. I don't think there's anybody listening right now. That doesn't think the Broncos have good pieces right and we could list them. But this has been a good Couple draft classes for John Elway and Matt Russell and speaking about Russell. They're gonna have to replace him as well. So whether they do that internally by promoting either a Jader so on the pro side, or Brian Stark if he interviews really well, but he is not getting the job. Maybe they say, you know what we want you to take that Russell's job or they bring somebody else in from outside of one of these GM's has someone That they wanna, you know, Run, help him run the show with them. That's out there. But if two jobs to fill, it's funny, because certainly the GM is the most important one. But the job about Russell did and kind of the day to day nuts and bolts things filling in the holes for John Elway. That's why they worked well together. That job needs to be replaced as well. But That maybe doesn't get as much credit publicly and maybe we should start giving it to him. He had a lot to do with these last couple draft classes. Well, And this is where I almost wonder that the new GM just brings in their pro personnel guy at this point, I mean, that it seems like I mean, if you're kind of building your staff, that would be a guy that you want. Basically somebody that's gonna be in your foxhole that that's gonna be kind of the successor because that's what this is building towards. Let me ask you something. BK. This is the last one for me if they started what, you understand the situation. I think A lot of people are kind of projecting out after we learned about Joe Ellis and what he said to Mike, Listen, you know, March 2022. He's probably the step away as long as that he can. An ownership is going to be stable and all that. Of course, we know about John Elway's contract. Whatever happened with Vic Fangio? People have sort of projected out there that the new owner might move on from this GM as soon as next year. That doesn't seem physically responsible for the organization. If you're hiring a guy that's got to be here at least 4 to 5 years like you're gonna give a guy a 45 year contract. You're not going near two year with a brand new G M. What? Why do you think that could be the case or couldn't Because people don't understand how business works on. They think everybody wants. Everybody wants their own guy. The new GM automatically once their own coach, right? That may be true unless you come in and you really get along with the coach and the coach happens to be good or vice versa. Right. A new coach get tired and the GM they work together or like we're seeing I guess that's what could have worked in New York with gays bringing in Joe Douglas Douglas, of course, outlasting Jason. We could think of other examples where the coach was there before the game. That rule is helping higher the GM and that person's gonna work closely with him. In Carolina. But to think that GM is only gonna be here for a year and a new owner automatic almost blowed up. Here's one thing I know about rich people. They don't usually get rich on accident. They may have some help from their family, but they stay rich for a reason and If they've got the wherewithal to be able to buy an NFL team, they probably got some good people around them, and they're presumably less the Broncos. Go on 16 next year two and 14 are gonna think. Okay, this guy just got hired right? He was interviewing other places. Well, let me at least let him do his job for a little while. Not because I'm paying him, but I want to see Do I have the best team in football, and it just took until he got this opportunity here in Denver for him to prove that And maybe he's my jam for 10 or 15 years because he really gets it and I don't have to. That's one thing I don't have to worry about. I could go tweet other parts of the organization or change things, but I know that this guy Is taking care of everything. And so I congest, you know, know that that's something I don't have to worry about. Right? And I'm 100% with you. And this is that several bothers me because we just get in this this mindset that the new GM won't like anything of the existing organization as it stands right now, But I I sort of have to believe that the new GNB would be brought in, in part because this would be a favorable spot favorable opportunity, and they get their chance to make their mark and 100%. You can't blame a GM for taking over a roster and say, Well, if you didn't get this team to winning record by next year, your move on it's like, well, that's impossible. No, GM comes into any team across the NFL. And has that kind of impact to the point where, Okay, I'm gonna turn over the entire roster, making my own and you can judge everything that happens from here on out that that's not real. No. Although John Elway did come in and have the best first five years of any GM in the history of people get a little bit time there. He didn't have time, right? And it wasn't Hey, why don't you get in your one? They went intimate with Tim Tebow. Tebow mania. And then in year two, he did acquire Peyton Manning, which I'm not taking his credit away from him. I'm saying he who had the wherewithal to be able to get that done. Most G M's in a new job are bringing in a Peyton Manning tight. There are really too many of those guys that are available at that point in their career that come in to help elevate on organization and then make free agents is one of flock to you..
