"A very impressive subtitle history and future of American intelligence Here's a call from Patrick in saint Mary's Kansas good evening Hello Hi Yeah I was just calling in you know all that stuff about George Washington and Thomas Jefferson Franklin or whatever spies So there was a very great paradigm at 2000 years ago He was actually real famous even during his lifetime And he advised that we should be innocent as does and fly or Fox So George Washington you know awesome awesome job and everything Well there's no question about it Certainly espionage goes back almost as long as I suppose there has been organized society So what well taken Patrick there is a segment here and you go into some of the important factors that enter into the whole notion here The predictability spectrum four key fact global we're talking about is crystal balling Okay what's going to happen What's going to happen It's a highly organized approach And of course there's a high premium on accuracy as much as you can get Data data data obviously the more information you get of course the problem I suppose is Amy that in this day and age you can be inundated with data You get so much data You don't know whichever to focus on It's true You know we live in a world where sometimes we have too much data and sometimes we don't have enough And we have both problems and intelligence You know we're in Super Bowl season even though my niners lost I'm so focused on the Super Bowl And if you think about sports predictions compared to national security threads Sports predictions are much easier because there's so much data and not just any kind of data data about the same game with the same teams and the same players So you can have a much easier job at looking at future performance based on past performance You also know when a win is a win right I know that I know the niners lost right I don't like it but I know that they lost But in national security issues it's hard to know when a win is a win right So was arming the Afghan mujahideen when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan a win Well eventually the Afghan mujahideen morphed into Al-Qaeda So compared to sports predictions intelligence predictions or assessments much much harder So you can have thousands of data points on NFL games But how many countries have ever developed a nuclear weapon so we can predict what Iran is going to do The answer is ten right And that's not a lot to go on So it's inherently difficult to deal with intelligence assessments compared to other areas that are in the prediction business Something else you talk about confirmation bias What is that It's one of my favorites So I talk about there are 7 deadly biases that we all have to live with Confirmation bias and we all do it is when we believe information that reinforces what we already think And we discount information that contradicts our beliefs It's like when you read the horoscope you believe the good stuff and you discount the bad stuff And intelligence analysts can fall victim the confirmation bias too That really explains a lot of Iraq WMD and the intelligence failure that happened then Information was coming in but analysts actually discounted any intelligence like the aluminum tubes for example they discounted intelligence that would raise questions about really does to them Hussein have weapons of mass destruction programs actively now And they seized on information that reinforced their prior beliefs Obviously he did have certainly a chemical weapons use them against his own people and against the Iranians but the other parts of that triad not so much Jim and Pittsburgh good evening Jim Yeah good evening Jim I've been listening to you for years here Love your program Thank you Our video that bought the SR 71 spy plane that was developed during the Cold War The blackbird right Yeah the blackbird I was a kid in the air base Okinawa and air force rescue We had two SR 71s There's a recent video that you might be seriously interested in your listeners it's called Brian scholl was a U.S. Air Force pilot to crash and Vietnam was badly burnt went to container interface for partial treatment for his burns went back to Texas badly burnt and after all these burdens he qualified to be a pilot for the SR 71 including SR 71 for 12 years Wow Very impressive Might be interested that love is very a very patriotic Americans called Brian Schultz SH UL might want to write this done in the YouTube videos called butterflies black fence All right we duly duly noted Jim and thank you for that information It's something he brings up I think is interesting I've heard Amy Z guard a criticism of American intelligence and that is that we are great with high-tech toys boy We've got satellites that can read a license plate from orbit But we're not so hot on what is known as humid human intelligence that is to say boots on the ground or bathroom slippers or whatever the spy equivalent is it is to say that we are better at gadgetry and maybe tend to over rely on gadgetry than we do on actual human beings gathering intelligence Is that a fair criticism I think in some periods of American history it's absolutely a fair criticism So in the Cold War ended for example we relied so much on technical intelligence that we continue to pour money into those technical platforms of the satellites you mentioned from space What we didn't do was realign funding for greater human intelligence which is how you penetrate terrorist groups on the ground And so that was a real failing in the 1990s as a terrorist strike grew I think human has or human intelligence has rebounded since then But now the challenge is that we're not the only ones that have these great satellites orbiting the earth that in fact there are thousands of commercial satellites and they're going to be tens of thousands of commercial satellites soon orbiting the earth giving that kind of fidelity that kind of information to anybody who wants it So the intelligence business is changing and the U.S. the U.S. intelligence community is losing its advantage because so much is available to so many today.

I see you and inpatient bed occupancy, as well as ventilator use are at their highest point since the start of the pandemic live in the new center Taylor Casaroli Key to Our News, a Phoenix police officer is seriously hurt after being involved in a wrong way crash with a truck on a city street. "We're joined by Major Brian Scholl. Brian flew. How many 500 hours in the cockpit of the S R 71 burn? Yeah. Okay, Brian, I I saw an interview. You did where you teach that? The just like Elvis had to sing Love me tender at every concert you when you go out and use spoken. You speak all over the world and people always demand to hear that speed Check story. I promise you, we wouldn't do that. But I tell you not just because I made a promise to you about that. But the story when I started looking into your background The story of how you came to be. And what you overcame may be better put to become a Blackbird pilot is even more compelling. You flew 212 covert close air support missions in Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam War. Take us to that fateful day near the Cambodian border if you will. Why would I tell people? I'm the least likely guy that would have ever flown the Blackbird and the luckiest guy in the world to have done all I have done since the day my airplane went down. Still even today. And I mean that and I was Ah, I was forced to ride a plane into the jungle. There's flying 80 28 G's, which was cool little counterinsurgency Blame In AA kind of blew up on in the crash and was able to get myself out of this. Acted, which was a miracle in itself of my advisors that all melted in my helmet. So I was doing everything blind saw that great air Force training. Ah, ran across Ling and kind of laid out there in the jungle smouldering as pretty numb. I was badly badly burned, but I was Numb, So it wasn't a matter of intense pain as much as it was a zoo, little immobile and dehydrated and in shock a little bit, I guess. Very lucky that people you know, there's no doubt was their big fireball there. Non. I was real close Teo to one of our forward locations, so they knew where I was and everything people came. Burke got me out of there in I was just very lucky and have quickly medevac to Okinawa. The very next that night and spend two months in intensive care there where they said, Well, you're going to die and I can die. But we're going to Canada amputate a couple fingers that we're not gonna do that now You're just gonna have to build your body back from £119. Now then. I went from 1 82 1 19, and then they flew me back to Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Been about a year in the hospital. They're going through all the surgeries and It really was no There was no riel path. You could see that this man is going to get back in the cockpit of a fighter jets and be able to function especially with the use of his hands and fingers. Overcome that injured. He lives. He'll be fine ink and they walk again and everything. Well, they initially didn't think Yu didn't give you much chance. A living even Brian. It looked pretty bad first, and ah, they just I think all of the athletics and everything. I've done all my life and just working out. I was only 25 years old. It's will help me and the doctor even said Your vital signs never waver never wavered. Once even Lindy went through the most trump your body wants in most drama. So again, I'm just very lucky and It's just a story that you don't believe when you hear all the twists and miraculously turned to it. You think you're just making it up? And then one day, you know, you pass a physical, You get back to fly, and then Wow, that you're being too humble, sir. And I don't want to skip forward too much. So I'm going to talk about that. But before we do that, so you how long were you on the ground after the crash on your own? I mean, they didn't come and get you right away. I was only on the ground in less than an hour. OK about an hour. Maybe if they like, said it was a very difficult place to get to cook in the world that they knew. People were coming and it wasn't that I was out in no man's land laying there for 12 hours, I would have been dead. That the folks who came and got you with a PJ's or some other Okay on DA is just like said a very Or teach every turn of my story. I have to say, wow, that you know it could have gone the other way so easily. I tell people I had 50 rounds, a tracer ammunition on my vest with my pistol, and in that cockpit was unfired and none of none of the ammunition went off or anything. So I mean, There was 100 stories like that, where you could have easily insured. You would never fly again. By just some little misstep was just my destiny will have different paths in life and It was just meant to be. I don't take credit. The reason. You know, I'm not trying to sound humble about it. I'm just I've come to a great realization in life that I don't take credit for it because all of the things that have happened the way we always tend to think we're in control of the universe, But we're really not So, yes, I had a part. You have to adapt. You have to adjust to what happens in life. But I really feel like it was just my destiny that it That was the way it was going to be. If you put the effort in and you don't know how much you can really do on that one of the big messages like Fox are you don't know how much you Khun do till you really put in the effort. There was no no guarantee There's no guarantees in life is not so my story is not one of you. Look at me. I'm tough on brave, courageous. It's like, you know, I learned a whole lot. I was pretty much a big baby. They're in the hospital run and screaming and cursing. I get them and a brand what we'll get to that that Parker's that's a But I just want to say, you know, asking me who My favorite guests are is kind of like an ascot. You know, apparently their favorite child is it's for today you're my favorite guest. But let's just say that the para rescue the PJs or some other favorites and just real quick. Keep in mind. It's a family show brand share with folks would happen that that last rescue helicopter was coming in the past, like I don't think we can land there. And share with our listeners. What that PJ told upon it. Well, Yeah, there was. It was pretty inaccessible area, and they didn't think they could put the chopper down without you know, Duff rotor Clarence and the guys were underground like this guy's going to die. If we don't get him out of here, we can't keep moving him around. It's really tough terrain and And one of the American of the guy's point his weapon at the helicopter San If you either put it down or we'll shoot.
