Brian Michael Smith On Making Trans TV History on 9-1-1: Lone Star

"So not only. is it historic. Have this black trans masculine character on such a mainstream tv show but it is equally. important in. Has to be underlined actually that this role is a fireman. He's a hero and he's not built on cliches that we've seen typically what would your reaction when you first read the script for it when i first read the script i mean even before i got the script and i got the audition notice and i'm telling you excited for just a guest role on on nine went and i get the email and it's like series regular audition for nine one. One lonestar transfer firefighter. Who is from the midwest roughneck and is being recruited down to join this new rag. Tag team of elite firefighters. And i was like. Are you kidding me. This is exactly what i want. You know so excited by the character description. I mean we've come a long way in. How characters aren't even describing the breakdowns for auditions. And how respectful they are how much they understand. You know the difference between a trans man trans woman or someone who's non binary. I didn't think there would really be a day when i would be able to play a trans male aerobic character as a regular. Oh and you thought that because looking at the history of film literally hasn't ever been a character like that ever. No no no and i mean one of the amazing things about working on disclosure with. I got a chance to revisit. Some of the things that i saw growing up and then things that i hadn't seen before and as i looked through just hours and hours of film clips from tv shows. I realized like they're very rarely. Has been actual trans. Men characters represented until the late nineties with boys. Don't cry but even then the director had described the character as a female person wanted to be a male and all this kind of stuff. You know she retracted that. But most of the representation that i had seen were female characters women who decided to cross dress as a male for some sort of gain so it was like this you know. Women's empowerment story in male packaging. And at the end of the day. You know once you know her her love life was on the line or you know when she got what she needed her. She proved that she can do anything she takes. All the mail stuff off in becomes woman again. You know there was this whole believe. Almost that transmit don't exist. You know it was always kind of like women in disguise. So i thought either i have to just continue to play this male characters or just. I'd never thought that it would come from a television. He's chestnut but He's he's got the same high energy and it's just Kinda you have to go through the motions and you never know when the light bulbs going to come on but it has clicked with him a couple four times and I'm sure you know they're looking for him to get more consistent which I think he will as 'cause he's still sounded in good shape and these hold me back get older and more mature they they just You haven't busted him by the time they're four or five. They do their best running that he's in right now but he's still got a bright future future and I am curious. Because the mayor pioneering cat she was pretty successful in Puerto Rico. She had a good career. Made a quarter of a million dollars a camera including some steaks an placements and then must have come back and and sold old sold as a broodmare prospect and is that how legends and the bought Bader then November keeneland. No nine yeah think they paid six thousand four she eighteen or nineteen now so she was. You know she was nine or ten there Yeah I mean just look at peak get you talk about consistency and durability it falls back to the damn there I think she started fifty six times and she wasn't what nineteen or twenty races. It it was a very good resume she had but it was just. I don't know how much credence people get to Puerto. Rico that's why he picked her up for what he picked her up for. Sure thank God. "Of course it was too late too late then he had an excuse that day. Let's put it that way. Yeah I love it you talk about your operation. They give everybody a little background on you and your your how you got to the racetrack and and so forth. I'm a second generation horseman. My Father Russell Michael Junior healed landmark farm here like she's been on Paris. Pike stood olden Olden Times al-Qaeda lot of good old horses. Unfortunately my father passed away in nineteen eighty eight at fifty four years old. I was nine nineteen and that was the one thing my dad and I had in common was. The horses is so much fun for me growing up. And he had successful horses withholding holding ran in the Derby. And when Betty money won the Goldenrod and They're the list goes on. But that's how oh I got started in it when my father died I just I gravitated towards the horses more and more and I just went to work for people and you know that grown up with a new and man I've been doing unit ever since I started out as the next rider and you know gradually built my training operation with my partner here. Heather pharisee was an ex steeplechase jockey who spent and several years with Jonathan Sheppard. Sure so she's got a PhD in in horsemanship or self more proud of her. I mean she spends ten or twelve hours a day. Here here at the barn. It's just you know it's it's like good horseman. Say the more time you spend it the barn the better. You'll do watching.

"Riding the talk about the Alex Alex you know the way the way he won the prairie by you and I mean people have to be kicking themselves thirteen to one a little silly the to look at a horse that was eight for sixteen on the year with five other board placements and he took very little money in the in the bio. Yeah I was a little surprised by that myself but I understand the logic of the handicappers with him being you know. I don't know if they truly appreciated how tough the starters are around here Kentucky Kentucky Indiana these starter. Fives solid hard knocking. I mean knockout races. So we kinda you know. He's just got so much talent. We thought like like We've taken that route and make things as easy and I put easy in quotations on him as you possibly can because like I say the starter. Fives are solid. But were would they tune the horse up. I mean you know because those horses that they run against they're all good horses that put up good numbers consistently and every racist tough and he's handled that so well and that's why I was a little hesitant to run him in the free by you because shoot. I didn't WanNA break his heart but I had confidence that the horse Deserve the opportunity and and I wanted to see what he could do and I knew he wouldn't you know stumbling last or anything like that. I knew he'd give good candidates shelf but man when he opened up down the stretch that day that was like one of the greatest moments of our lives and he put any man just It's very rewarding awarding. And it was it was a big thrill and right on time we needed to hear this mom.

"We're back at the rate since twenty five minutes into our one on this Tuesday and Ed. I didn't think we could completely put twenty nineteen to bed. I mean we we still have got another. What ten days For the eclipse awards. They'll give those out and that's you know. Typically the official wrap up of the year. But in the meantime there's a couple of horses we're GONNA celebrate here in this hour because nine wins on the year for an is bandit and Jerry Rob. He'll join us in a little bit We're going to start though with Brian. Michael who sent out Picacho To nine wins on the year in seventeen starts eh culminated on New Year's Eve with the prairie by you win at Turf Way and the really everywhere the the hold me back Goulding went He really acquitted himself famously. What a great year Brian? Well done. Congratulations thank you so much. I appreciate it. It's been a fantastic ride and fantastic riber on this is a home. Read of Mr Ritter's and you got a hold of him. After after after his career was was had gotten going Amalio Garcia had him. early-on let me talk about what you got when received them. Well it's kind of a funny story kind of story you can't make up he just He's a very high strung animal. And there's just lots of things we do to appease him you know we took. We're giving front door service and requires a lot of walking and a lot of you know we call him going out doing this nature studies. My girlfriend had this Paris She takes takes him on long walks. And we kinda split the time and and the way we got him was he was He was getting a little little high. Ah I'll put it put it kindly and He got in some trouble at Bill Terry and actually got borrowed off of the racetrack for an incident. The Gate and Sir..

"And because I know you you've all been waiting twenty one hours for the for the optical update clear you. You don't WanNa know honestly let me I tell you that I got very very fun hour. and Ah after the first break. Because we're going to we're going to wrap up one element of twenty nine thousand nine. That has not been addressed arrest and that element is the winningest horses from from the year. And and it. I don't mean the winningest horses that racked up earnings in you know in multi-million dollar races horses that won the most races on the year and there was a bit of a there was a bit of a end of the year not argument per se. But I did see not. Everybody had seen exactly which horses had had won the most races. And Anna's bandit who went nine eleven the earned the most four hundred thousand a change but there was also Pika Choo who at the right right at the end of the year. got a stake win and was just amazing one. Nine of seventeen starts for Brian Michael. He's going to join us. I Today and then Jerry Rob and Jerry. I've been promising an aunt as bandit visit. I'm a huge Jan bandit fan and of course Heavily involved in the in the match series. But she's been just so good for so long and then the peekapoos story really is fun and culminating for owner Andrew Ritter WHO also bred this? Hold me back. gelding culminated with that prairie by you win ahead on New Year's Eve so it was a perfect story after winning a bunch of starter allowance and start are optional. Type things over the course of the year so the two of them with nine wins apiece. And I've been wanting to get this in before we get you know too far down the field because they're they're going to be honoring you know the eclipse winners. That's been dominating the conversation but horses like these two really deserve serve. I think and their and their trainers you know to to keep the so good so long and you know all all through the year so kind of a fun story to nine race winners on the year and they'll join us in this hour Andy Stirling. We'll go through the New New York action and Jeremy Plonk our three. Some countdown to the crown probably will really sift through those allowance and maiden winners with Jeremy. And we'll also visit with Victoria Keith. And it typically. When when Victoria has been on that goes back a few years? It's been to talk about the Fox Hill farm runners and they're certainly you know. There's certainly some prominent ones current and an historic to talk about but Victoria is GonNa join us to talk about the work that she pioneered with the support of Rick Porter with the N.. T. W. O.. And the timing. I thought on this was good. Given yesterday's the follow up to the situation that revolved around Dino Alvarado and her fundraising efforts. That were called into question and then a pretty much a just went sideways from there and yesterday the Attorney General of New Jersey Finding Or settling a What they term a civil case Only essentially finding Alvarado for failure to properly register Mr and do the appropriate paperwork for a charity and she's been restricted from any potential charity work. Money's money's co-mingled etc they. They didn't really describe. Nobody is really described. You know where the money went but you you do know that and for those that followed the story it in a gets into Louisiana and the a lot of murkiness from from there Natalie Voss with the extensive story that attract a lot of this. The the best part I suppose the only best part of this story was the creation of the national thoroughbred welfare organization by Victoria and reporter and it much in the same way that the thoroughbred after Karelian was an outgrowth of a situation that was confusing and murky and so forth. Ah that has been a big success. And in this case the creation of a umbrella organization to look after the the welfare side of things not so much the you know the retraining and the off the thoroughbred the third you know the after care alliance it has done that with the accreditation process and in fact in fact I think yesterday. Ta a a opened the doors for for accreditation Registrations and and requests for accreditation for the year but but the creation of NCW. Oh we're going to hear from Victoria. About what the progress has been how. It's benefited this as an oversight organization and I I wanted to try to focus on anything good that that came out of a bad scenario so Victoria Keith. As well and I'm sure I'm sure they'll be a an Omaha beach. The update from from Victoria. And maybe some of the other Fox hill runners couple of pieces of of of news to get to immediately. Or do you want my I update the I update all right The as As I've as I've said every time I've gone back to the retina a specialists and they've been wonderful Dr Fox and Dr Greenberg in down in wherever they are killing no not gelderland. Uh Lance just tiny just a little south of Albany Every time I go there they they basically alarming alarming further that that I was lucky not to lose all vision in my left eye. They they do the eye test asked and they did. They saw the resulted. Like Oh my God this is unbelievable. Oh your eyesight can't believe how much better it is than we thought it was going to be. What what way what? Yeah that's what I got we. I can't believe it. How well this is healed? Oh my God we thought you were going to end up with a with a patch and going are going to end up like You know peg leg Pete I I I. It's unbelievable so the problem in and and you know if you've heard me sort of quietly complaining it's because it's tough to do close work. The distance is fine. I I can. I can watch races. I watch movies. I can see things from across the room. Etcetera that's fine but close up is a problem and that includes my peripheral vision which it was funny. I said it. They said any other questions. This is what I said. I'm having trouble my peripheral vision. You could forget that you're you're you're done your peripheral vision is done so my head's going to have to be on a swivel I. Ah Yeah it's been crazy. I can't see things off the off to that side particularly to that side left left so so Tina Tina xl teams like a seeing dog with me. She's like you know leading me around and of course all this does make her further nervous about about me doing anything driving. I changed lightbulbs the other day and and got it into your fault. What are you doing on that step stool seriously? I can't. I can't change lightbulbs anymore. That's the latest that so so I don't know I know there are several of you that are saying to yourself. Hey stupid take advantage vantage. The don't do anything the life of Leisure No. I can't do that anyway so I gotta go back today. The problem the the problem today is a is a cataract. That's that's they said. was there from the start. I knew that But they said maybe you gotta get that because everything's if things are gray they're they're like darker shades darker it's if you uh-huh Marty McGee. It will give you the his warning every year about prostate exam. Well I'll give you a warning with if you see those little flashes and those little floaty things in your field of vision. And that's that's close to his art and literally and Eh He comes back strong from his year of ill health. And so I'm giving you the I I'm I'm I'm your I'm the Lions Club for right is the Lions Club. Right isn't vision. Their that's their. That's their bailiwick. A couple of notes notes about the sale numbers yesterday and the sales activity very very kind of routine yesterday today. I thought when I tuned in a few different times and a private sale that led the the mayors and applauding riding in foal to Kirwin three hundred sixty thousand that Led the the mayor knockdowns ads and interesting that Hunter Valley who bought applauding Kirwin Philly as a wheeling last year Keelan November.
