"Father was stationed at. Cf s hillcrest In in the armed forces and we had a little backyard rink across the street Alfonse and pauline clement. Their son bill Invited me across the street. And that's how it all started for me. My parents were political science buffs. Artistic music buffs. Nothing to do with sports. But once i got on the little rink And it was so cool because it had it was surrounded by evergreens and we used to pause and pull the sap off of the trees to choose like bubblegum and it was just an unbelievable backyard. Franken that would be number one. But i just at port. Credit arena port credit memorial arena. Yesterday and i'll tell you. Bill and brian Have that ice in tip. Top shape was so wishing that. I could have gone on my skates but We were shooting for chevrolet goods cup. Anyway i would recommend that as what seems to be a perfect sheet of ice so wrong when you think about christmas memories holiday memories you know what kinds of things stand out for you well. It's a big one White horse i remember. I always got table hockey games elliott. So i remember being about eight years old and lying in my bed and waiters. Maybe even seven or six and i heard footsteps coming down the hall and i figured it was santa And it was either mom or dad. I wouldn't dare open my eyes for fury jinx christmas but they placed The little replica stanley cup that came with coleco table hockey game that stanley cup on my night table. And that's what the footsteps were all about. So that's a very fond memory. I remember in mill cove. My father stationed there in nova scotia. And i received a pair of dr goalie gloves. Awhile yeah the that was the eventually grant fuhr. But that's even before his time. And then i read your i. i always fondly remember. i say this nineteen seventy-one. My mom and dad gave me the hockey night in canada. Double album history of the show Set and i listened to that album and evidently had planted a seed. I had no idea. No ambition to get into it but that hockey night in canada disc. When i was eleven years old and redder seemed to make a difference. The one thing. I missed me about you is you know you. You keep a lot of stuff. And i wonder how many of these things that you got when you were young. Do you still have a lot. And ironically i have nothing in the way of memorabilia. I wasn't in a seven forty. Two variety in brantford I wish i had a few more things from nhl superstars. I don't but i have a lot from my childhood. I'm very grateful to have photographs of that backyard. Rink can white horse The only thing i really regret is i lost my gretzky rookie card. I used to pack all of my rookie cards. Were in a box. For safekeeping when we lived in an caster. I also had a letter from jacques plot. I had written to the great junk plant and he responded so. I lost my rookie cards. I had eisman lemieux gretzky a number of them. Pretty mint condition. And i lost this. Letter from jacques. Plante which i really regret. But yeah the stuff elliott as you've seen like i'm just sitting here looking at The game sheets from one steve. Welcome in imf a preseason game and looking at the starting lineups. it's just hilarious to go through your files looking for one thing and ending up in a rabbit hole. That takes you to another hall you know. Yeah oh yeah. Is that colonial league guys raft together. This was an nhl preseason game it was okay. Yeah yeah yeah. And i was just because you're such a guy for these kinds of things jeff but we we saw starting lineups. We had Marquis john leclair and ryan malone for pittsburgh ryan. Whitney funny enough was on defense. I didn't remember that with brooks or pick the buffalo starting lineup defense was kalina newman and upfront. They started their tough line at mare. Well not tough. Thomas vanek kollek But lots of you know. Breyer was in that game. So people in crosby's in that game so people always ask me. Who is the best skater. And i told him john. Leclair was the one who blew me away despite maxim afinogenov briere crosby are so surprised at clara. The next day we were doing think hockey back in toronto and craig mctavish was our guest. And i said cheese craig. I was so amazed at john leclair. 'cause they were together in philadelphia and he's run. The problem is yet a wonky back so we can only ring that you know once every nine or ten games but when he got up to speed no one like him. It's funny you mentioned talking of A while ago thinking about Hockey night in canada features. And you think about missing showdown was was a classic one and i always come back to think hockey and one in specific always stuck with me. An may seem like a tiny little thing. Although i know that scotty bowman would train his team with this on a regular basis the one you did with paul maurice on line changes. Yeah one foot s. wasn't that fantastic. Yes i'd love that feature because you would learn something every. What was the one thing you took away from. Thank hockey well. I loved maurice as a teacher on that segment so he talked about one foot. I this is where you start to head to the bench and then you glide on one skate for fifteen to twenty feet and he illustrated it and you know you see it time and again players going off drifting off the ice. He taught that adam graves taught me the way it was kind of a can opener but the way to get a guy off the boards to retrieve a loose puck. I thought that was very special. Dale howard chuck delete blessed dale howard. Chuck todd us a tight turns and how to position the stick And even brian kilrea on face offs. I remember vividly. He would take literally gouges out of the ice. He was so strong but he. He and kirk muller both were of the opinion. You know a very small circle with your stick blade. You don't take a wide swath at it. You just keep your your blade within the actual dot as you attempt to win the so jeff every saturday night. When ron hosts the show on hockey night in canada you know..

"Rush Jackson and a few other guys and it was unbelievable like they were thanking Ernie Afghanist- for the opportunity to speak and there's so kind and polite when touchdowns in the game were scored, they got up and they all off the field together. There was no cartwheel's and dances and Hooton was just I don't know. We've changed certainly as a species I think and I think that back then. and. It was all before my time granted. But back then there just seemed to be a different psyche when it came to going after people, you know letting people have their privacy. When you're crossing a line like in a debate, you don't have to get in the mud well, now everybody gets in the mud gladly and. I think we've lost something there. Well, the whole thing today is. Look at me man. Look at me look kind of a big deal. It's all. It's all SORT OF GANGSTER ATTITUDE STEVE The. I'm not I'm not overstepping their say that you know that. From Sally's to sell fees to all sorts of you know. It's somehow somehow they've allowed kids to drift into kids sports now to where. You. Know You need Brian Kilrea their coaching every single team in every single sport. That's what you need every sport every you know. Anyway. K. We sound like all guys right now we are in my day. He's better in my day. Anything with the presidential debate. No, you did not absolutely not. You didn't Miss Anything if you missed the Blue Jays today either. funnier talking about that whole notion of like when something happens in on. Sorry. Go ahead when something happens on twitter like. I mean when you're watching a game, it's amazing on twitter like they seem to know and they're reacting wild later something and it barely just happened I was actually I was actually watching the Jays game today and it's still on we record this but it so over. Because TAP is working them in game two on eight to midnight. Yeah. So it's going to end the J. season in the JC really been they were delaying in this whole series. They just they. They just didn't have really anything going on. There were no good. Yeah and at one point of the Game Bo Bischette just. One Wall to him on ground and he's you know botches it and can't get the guide. I. But I swear to God the way I was watching it. There may have been a chat going on on the right side it was like. Just as it's happening, somebody's going O F F S. Bischette what the hell are you doing? I'm like what happened? Oh, and then just immediately it happened so..

"Who have used that one I think. That might have been the bike that Stamkos and dull Zado and the legendary. Theo Peckham would've used for their combat. Before we get to word association Elliott ahead idea how about this people send in their ten every week interactive. Word Association it can have a theme might not have a theme just curious Elliott's thoughts on all these random people objects, things teams. Whatever how do you feel about that? I think it's a great idea and we should also tell people that doesn't just have to be hockey or sports. If you WANNA, throw on a couple of non hockey or sports, related names in there or try and non hockey non sports related theme. I think we're open to that, too your favorite post structuralist. French theorists your favorite Bethan. Poets, your favorite existential philosophers, these types of things Elliot. I talk a Beowulf and middle English literature. University. I'm never doing that again. If anybody's submits a list like that, you can be guaranteed. It's not coming anywhere near the PODCAST, please. Someone sent all the characters from Canterbury Tales okay. Here we go I. Did that one, too? Is another nightmare starting with Sean Burke today? Go for Sean Burke. Sean Burke first thing I think about was Sean Burke and you know he probably most people probably won't think about this. Is that I came back from my first Olympics in seat with CBC. It was in two thousand four in Athens and Back and the next day we started World Cup of Hockey Coverage, and I hosted the first game, which was a non Catta game was Sean Burke and we were in the first intermission together, so I always remember that story about the Burke, and then I also remember was he bought a rookie meal and It was excellent, so I always appreciated that of Oh Berkey, and then he. He, of course you remember his goaltending. He was a great goalie, so fantastic goaltender and the other thing. I really remember, too. Is The guy who kind of put Ilya pers- gala back on the map? He put his game back together in Arizona and made brazelle of a lot of money and I know Sean would very much like to be a general manager someday when a bronze medal. Olympics in two thousand and eighteen and one of the toughest goaltenders ever Okay Allen McCauley. I remember Allen McCauley having a breakout playoff in Toronto. After he got traded for New Jersey in the Doug Gilmour deal Toronto had some injuries and he had a huge breakout playoff I remember doing a story on that for the score. And Somebody said to me I said to someone. What's one thing about Allah MacAulay that we don't really know and they said well. Some people know this, but he's a lot smarter than the rest of the people in this dressing room combined. very very break. I think he was scholar of the year one year in the in the C. H.. H. I'm not sure of all okay, but I think I think also. He did like his scholarship. Stuff was the student stuff was very high. You know another guy who I think could be a general manager someday if he really wanted to be he took some time off to be with his family, but that's the one thing i. always remember about him. Wise someone said smarter than everybody else in this dressing room. Put together I think it was Gary Roberts who said that quite a compliment Brian kilrea legendary Ottawa sixty seven's coach as you know, Elliot said he was the best player he'd ever coached. that is high praise. All Right Randy Carlisle's old D. partner with the Sudbury Wolves Dave Farish. Dave Farish I remember came in a trade in punch. Him lack second. Go around! He is the one of the best trades that punch him lack made bringing him to the Toronto Maple leafs, and I'm GonNa. Look this up. I believe. It was Dave Farish, and another player for Reg Thomas. who was a tough player in the H. l.? But Toronto traded him to for Dave Fares. Yes. Thomas for Dave, Farish and Terry Martin and nineteen seventy-nine punch him lack second. Go around in Toronto was not very successful, but that was one of the most successful trades he did. Make Fares was a big hitter, and then I got to know Dave a little bit when he was assistant coach for Carlisle and he was a really good guy to talk hockey with like he had a lot of really interesting things to say, and he had great insight, so I remember him as a kid as a player and a big hitter and I remember him as a guy who covered the sport as an assistant coach who had really? Really good insights into playing defense and things that you tried to teach players all right. Here's someone that wanted to have on the podcast forever, Tom mcvie. I think I told the mcvie story. Which one is not only. Did you get the goal, but you've got an assistive. That's right. Yeah, you know what I think of with Tom mcvie like voice voice. Yes, just want to have mine just to hear his voice. We all have these conversations when we're teenagers, right? Are you going to smoke? Or you're not gonNA smoke in the mid eighties when we were teenagers, Jeff both you and I. You're going to have that decision. And I remember there was a guy at high school, and I don't remember which musician he liked, but the musician had said that he got this gravelly voice because he was a big smoker as a teenager, he didn't have the voice all the time. And he said I love that voice and I wanNA. Voice like that and I remember all of us, saying that's the dumbest reason ever. Think about smoking, 'cause you want a gravelly voice, and he goes no I i. think that's really cool. First of all the other thing I noticed Tom mcvie was when I. See him now because it's based out west. He's in great shape. Yes, he is to like I hope that when and how old would time. He's gotta be eighty three eighty four. He must be I'm just looking this up right now. He was born in Nineteen Five, so he's eighty five and I see him. Him He's an awesome shape like I'm fifty and I looked like a bag of potato chips. I hope when I'm eighty eighty-five. Should I get there I? Look like one tenth is good as that guy does. But the he had another great line I always remember because he has great once he has the one of the original winds of my hotels room was so small I. Put my key in a lock at I, broke the window like he has a bunch of great lines awesome. Kent Nelson there were people who argue that after Gretzky, he was the most skilled player in the league. Now I'll tell you a funny story of Kenya's and Scott nothing to do with him. This is why jerks. We were in high school, okay? So one year and I'm googling it right now to find out the year. Can't Nielsen. decided he was going to go back to Sweden. And, he didn't play in the NHL I think it was eighty seven eighty eight, because it looks like that theory left the L.. Go to Italy. Yeah, so he leaves. Go to Italy on this guy in our pool. Oh! and. We didn't let him change the. Oh No free. We had a rule because we always hated the people who you made a pick, and then someone says Oh, you know he's got a hangnail. Oh, I want to change my pick. You don't know how long it's going to be out with the hand now, so we said before no changing your picks. If you make a mistake, year stuck with it so this guy because the year before he played in Minnesota and Edmonson. Sixty three points in sixty one games. And a monster playoff for the oilers, so he picks deals and we go. You know he's playing in Italy this year, right, he goes. Oh, we pick. We're like nope too bad. No. That's nasty, but I like it and I I would imagine I probably listened knowing who I was in high school. I probably would have done the same and I'm sure I did during our hockey pools mark how I remember doing a story on mark once and people telling me that he was the best player they ever saw Marlboros. There was one time the how family allowed us to go over to Before Toronto and Detroit, plate in the outdoor game in Michigan. The how family allowed us to go there for a piece for hockey night in Canada fill their Christmas dinner and I always remember how gracious all the house weren't allowing us to go there and be a part of that. I remember Mark How on that Philadelphia Defense. where it seemed like only four guys ever played him and Brad mcraven and Doug, crossman. Brad Marsh was like they only had four defenseman, but then who scored the big goal in. An in game, six JJ Daniel J Dany. Oh, that's right, yes! There was a story Tony mckechnie told back in December about how they were in a fight in Philadelphia, and it wasn't like..

"As far as Tampa. I wouldn't be surprised if they want it because they have the one element I think is super important to any team that wants to win the Stanley Cup. Scar tissue Yup In view look back. I mean there. I'm sure there are exceptions. But so many teams that have won. Cups have not just been lucky to get in that one time and make a run. Even the Kings had lost in the first round to prior years before winning it in two thousand twelve a little bit of scar tissue with that group. They wanted to get beyond the first round. It hurts hurt so much. That maybe make the adjustments right. Think about Washington. Think about all the disappointments for that team especially head to head against Pittsburgh. I think scar tissue makes a huge huge difference. Saint Louis Gets Tarasenko back then. They have a weapon that they haven't had all you know. Just another team came close. Yup Yup Tarasenko is going to be true like mid it's almost like a trade deadline acquisition. Does it fit in with the chemistry? I mean he's he's obviously teammate. Or there is but like does it upset. Whatever else they've gone. There is an adjustment period. There Pat Riley coach of the Lakers. He wrote about it in his book where he brings back a magic missed half a season and then he came back and they had. The team was still in first place or close to first place. I still remember they came back. They had the welcome back magic signs and everyone in the building of the old Great Western Forum all this and then the team went on down thing these went into a slump. Because there's that human nature things of the guys are going. Hey what about US right? We just we just? We played really well with our top guy. What about and then comes back and all the attention goes to. It's not magic's fault it's not that player's fault but but then in the long run when you work those things out you want magic you want. Tarasenko you want those guys. This is just a tag it with a question which Canadians is from Ron Fortier Which Canadian team will break the drought and win the Stanley Cup? Next any chances this year so Ron Forte. Run forty four If it's it might be the Hawk might be my buddy there if it's a hawk. I don't know maybe I don't see it this year. It's hard they're only going to be the Edmonson. Toronto EIGHTY WINNIPEG VANCOUVER. Likely certainly no favorites right now group. No no clear favorites not even in their conference. Yeah so maybe Toronto over the long haul. Because they've got so many skilled guys I like the way Vancouver's Kinda gone about the slow build. You have two years just listening to podcasts at Travis Green. And you know they're confident over the next five six years that they're going to be a really well oiled machine there. David Rice idol is goaltending. Good enough is the ten defense They might be again in that cycle where once they start adding a few more peers. Because it's tough to deny those big boys. I Would Trust Kenny. Hollan theme so yeah not the last year a year ago. Pele kill second worst this year second best. Yeah that's an area where I'm thinking of atoms. Trophy coach of the year. What areas the coaches have the most impact special teams? So if you can have an effect on a team like that kind of raises team that was out and now is in. Yeah Sposato so moving on. We had the trade deadline recently. Two guys two guys asked this question. Michael Lindberg and John Caldwell both ask it in similar ways. 'cause you traded in juniors but never as a PROB- I don't know if you can speak to what that process was like when you got traded from one team to another and adjusting to a new team. What was that like as a player? It was easier for me because of the circumstance that that happened I was selected in the junior draft in Ontario. I overall so Windsor Spitfires pick me I was fifteen years old and went to camp. Actually Joel Quenneville. Was the head coach. Excuse me the captain of the Windsor Spitfires. At the time I went and I was just too young and I was homesick. But also We've talked about it before my bottom drawer. Start to fill up with applications from every college out there but I couldn't play major junior and then go to college. Considered professional still is so I I went to camp and I went home and in all honesty when I look back at now. I couldn't minute then I can. I wish homesick was the biggest thing. I just didn't feel comfortable where I was already been away from home two years one year. Excuse me previous. That had a great time in North Bay where I played with the Hawk. Run for but It just I just so then I missed that whole year. Which of course really upset Windsor. Spitfires GOES ON THEIR HEAD COACH. We came to my house when my parents. Are you going to get one common? No problem okay. We'll pick it. I did not felt really bad about it. But then so after that first year there. The end of the year off trades for me knowing that. I'm not gonNA play for them that year but I made might join them. The following year auto ends up going to the Cup final that year and then during the summer I made a trip to Ottawa. Met some of the players met Brian. Kilrea met the. That's so I didn't really have to leave a team and join a new team. You knew kind of what you were eventually going to get into. So here's the best thing of it. You can imagine how much the Windsor fans really appreciate. They really love me. The next season first game of the year in Windsor Man. So we get well. Oh my I mean it's it's it's hell. Were they throwing rotten fish it you that would have been the nicest thing through so what happens is the happened to be a mix up some transportation issue with the officials no cell phones but they were able to get in contact they were going to be late about forty five minutes late so they come up with this idea that's have a showdown shooter against the other teams goaltender one shooter on just who. Brian Kilrea picks me so now I gotta take five shots on their Goldie. That one of their guys takes five shots. Whoever has the most goals wins and? Mexico. I'm on the Ice Alone. Going on a breakaway. You believe me scoring was the easy part dodging all the stuff thrown was the choir and I ended up winning shootout. We end up losing the game. They'll actually won the game but That was the worst part of the trade scenario Just a young kid that nobody is really when I was getting those college. Now everyone were sending and I was really looking forward to doing that. But then when I met with the people in Ottawa. They just changed my mind. Who would just a great and I love Ottawa. I just love it. I can only imagine kind of animosity but it's not good feeling. I felt awful but then I understood I understood completely but now I'm only seventeen years old and right and you are in the frame of mind you know coming in there with smug look on your face and I'm gonNA show you guys choose. I was you know and we and actually then that year. I'm not mistaken. Yes that year the wage a which is now the. All Star game was in Windsor. All Star team played online with Wayne Gretzky in that game scored a goal. Wayne being the Password so dodge some more debris that's great? That's that's awesome and I don't feel like because fans understand now. Maybe even in junior hockey to certain degree and I'm less versed in that when players move and especially in the pros. There's no animosity anymore. It's understood that it's a decision and it's not their fault the biggest in free agency. That's when we saw the hate towards John Taveras In the island. That's about the only time where you really see. Individual players singled out any more as enemies. Unless you're you know vander came you make enemies wherever you go but I? I really can't count on more than one hand. And the guys that are hated individually. Yeah at the amateur levels they do a better job nowadays by restricting the amount of time you can trade players and they try to make it easy now they do have what happens in the junior leagues more so than the Pro League talk about buyers and sellers that no teams have identified. How good they're going to be and they stock up. They really stock up. They try to load up one team and that happens quite a bit at that level but they they have their windows now where they have to make trades. Because they're they're cognizant of the effect it could have on a kid a kid that's not mature yet One thing that it's always been weird to me because in college Northeastern in Hockey East plays against the University of New Hampshire James Van Rims. Dyke was on those. Unh teams and he was a pest. We hated him. We had one game. He took a run at one of our players and usually our student section dresses in all black while the next section they made a one game exception. This is the blood game. We want blood. They all dressed in red. Every time Javy are touched the puck he be showered and booze people were throwing things on the Ice Trevor van rooms that goes to. Unh He gets booed. Every time he touches the puck. Brendan Van Rooms. Like the third brother goes there. He's getting booed. What happens? Brendan Transfers to northeastern. I have to root for that guy. Now that's weird switch. Though I made the switch I still find it. We still have a problem with the man who got bad memories in that game. Are I'M GONNA move on We got another question about the trade deadline. Broadcasters get excited about the trade deadline as much as the fans this is from Richard Having been through it a million times no because ten percent of what is talked about ends up happening so I try to wait till it's all over and then you know figure it out and see what's going on but I think it's just a maybe at a self defense device that when you're playing your you hear all the rumors and you go on in your head. Starts to spin on your your. Your life is a mess for two weeks and then when you become a broadcaster all these awe and everyone wants to be that. Oh let's break this trade in this team to me. Wait till it happens. Then I'll figure it out after that you know I've been caught in between wanting to be on top of every little news more soul that comes about for this team and then sitting back and waiting and and I realized recently. That doesn't make a difference. You Know How when the Front Office pulls the trigger on a move. Whatever they're gonNA do what will be will be and we'll find out about it you know. Yeah it's as a fan. You can speculate all you want. I mean we kick around boy you know. I wonder what they'll do with this guy and that guy especially in the situation we've been in but I gotta be honest. I wasn't like excited about the trade. I watched the Trade Center show like anybody else. But that's about it media media homesick. Yeah exactly up to more than we'll wrap up one from what our producer or producer Jesse our producer Jesse question at the end of the Bonus. Question all right. I'll do the two listener questions then. I'll get whatever Jesse's concocted over there Brad Bach asks how to smaller hockey markets. Let's say Albuquerque New Mexico. I think he lives there. Which currently don't have a professional team Gain the interest of he says NHL team. But I think it's more kind of hockey fans general. How how would small markets get more interest in hockey and help attract new players? I mean markets like L. A. Benefit greatly from the king's. How do you get that in other places that don't have hockey? Ooh That's that's a tough. I'll give a stab at this first of all Brad. Thanks for your service. Yeah thank you Brad. It kings games before.

"You know what he said. I had a bunch of fear you know. Oh I was young. I was leaving home for the first time I was homesick. wasn't all it was cut out to be you know Whoa wasn't wasn't quite the ecstatic guy. People would think and he said it when you look at it. A lot of these guys are in that same position that they're plucked from their homes and shoved into this hockey world. He said if it wasn't for Marshall Johnson was the head coach of Denver University when he played there years ago and he said Marshall Joe. If it wasn't for him he would have been a totally different guy. Not a hockey player but a totally different person. Listen and He understood that a lot of the parents who are speaking kid being fearful these parents are gut wrenched about having to let their kid go at such a vulnerable age and go play these universities. And Yeah Yeah. It's great time for them and all that and they're they're superstars in the early but talk to any parent and they'll tell you. I hope this coach is not a maniac because their role is a bunch of parenting. At that time. You know and And that's what he took away from that you know he took away he said the guy shaped me into being the man I am today and this guy. Darryl is an unbelievable guy is the most wonderful guy in the world. Generous Chris and hardworking and and he's very loyal friend of mine and he says all of that was due to this Guy Marshall Johnson when he was played for Denver for those three or four years. I coaches are so huge. They're worth their weight in gold. The good ones and we've talked so much about the pros in the bill peters effect and all the other stuff Where you know these these are paid athletes and so it's still wrong and Bill? Peters deserve to lose his job for the stuffy did but at the end of nee these are pros and these are men who consider handle themselves a little more than say the amateurs were always worry about. You know when you're an amateur. You're still a kid and he'd being sent off to these universities. You still a kid if you're being sent off to play the Interior Hockey League somewhere and it has everything to have a coach. Who is not only good at what he does that? It helps develop these players but also kind that has also taken these guys under their wings not treating them like assets treating them like machines that you know if that guys guys that machine's not working over there let's go kick it to make it work better for everybody that makes an NC AA. I scholarship Then I can point to somebody who went there and had an miserable experience either because they didn't get chance to play very much or they You now the coach was just a jerk. And that's that's the unfortunate thing about it so while it's nice to see that we saw a little. NHL Blip of coaches getting their act together. And and you know the guys who are doing it right paying a price I really want. I really hope that we continue to shine light on. What's going on in in lesser spotlights? Right talk to parents Steve who talked to any player first of all any player. Who played for Brian and they've got nothing nothing but rave rave complimentary stuff about Brian Darren Pang Wright played for bronchial right and you talk to that guys like to do? This guy was the bomb. He was the nuts as a coach as a mentor as a supporter as a cheerleader. He was just you know the best and I look at this example. Steve Say John Tortorella was a junior coach. Okay the way we know his personality. And you're we're a parent and your your you know your kid has choices here okay. He's good enough that he's going to be able to play major junior a and you got a choice and are you going to go to. Ah Send them to the team. Were John Tortorella the head coach. Or would you rather go to where Brian Kilrea and and I'm going Kilroy all day long all day long. You know I'd Imagine being subjected to this coaching style of John Tyrrell. It's hard to know what's going on behind closed doors though I mean I I don't I don't ever know unless you play unless you're in that room going every practice with this coach every boss with this coach hotel rooms meetings like you really can't give a full judgment of what these players are about like. I have heard from people who say you know. I played for Brian. Kill Ray and I hated him then at the same time Todd White for example name names. He loved playing for John Tortorella. He played for him with the Rangers for a little bit and he said he was very respectful. And an I liked the guy But lots of people would say in both cases in the other direction players that say oh roll their eyes and that that was that was not a good experience. Kill Ray since you hear tons and tons of stories about what a great coach. He was all that I always. You always find out. You'll always find. Every coach has got some nut skeletons in the closet but players who didn't particularly like playing for them. Yeah I heard that kill Ray. Hey in a uniquely SORTA interviewed billets or builders. You know because these kids get billeted. Did they live with families right when they come to town of course junior hockey players. If they're not from audubon right the end at the end up you know. Some of them are lucky enough to live with the same family. Weather other teammate. Lives in town but I heard killer was very. You know very didn't just say okay. Here's a family. Put them there you know that he spoke to these parents to make sure of the home setting and all this kind of stuff so would you. which would be a godsend? If you're a parent whipping your kid off to go play junior hockey. Yeah Yeah what it'll get. It is On that on that note when you send your kid away that there's you know the certain situations where parents are trying to and teams even and are trying to get fifteen year olds in like the there's an age limitation and every once in a while someone is so good that they apply for exemption and they get get into the league and I'm like what are you doing like from a social standpoint and even on ice standpoint. You're out there against twenty year. Olds as a couple overages out there that are you know north of of two hundred pounds and he gonNa send you Fisher and you're all out for that like it's just to me that's absolutely crazy. I saw one guy in the western hockey league. I don't think he was officially an exemption. But an emergency emergency call up and he got so smoked go coming down the left wing cuts to the middle of his skate and everything but some guy came across and just about out ended him. Put Him outright light. I just don't get Why anybody's in such a hurry to get you know such young kids into the top ranks? There's you there's plenty of time to get to where you want to be and not to mention. Hey Mixing childhood at the same time right. Well that's right. You know I you know I guess people should ask themselves. If you've been listening to this segment you know there's so much there's so much pressure Steve on winning now all right at at at starts at a pretty. What's it probably start at twelve thirteen years old hockey? Oh God where its way earlier than that Oh even earlier okay. Hey where they start to say. Yeah pressure went so now so now. The the sandbox days are over the participation days are over So the coaches have to begin to have this talk with the players going. Some guys aren't GonNa like it but but you're going to get to play as much and the reason for that is well. The Kid knows the reason. You're not good enough or are not as good as the other guy right so that whatever that state starts obviously too young according to me eight or nine years old and you know you wonder as a apparent if you had a choice again where your kids have got some promise. He's going to play junior B or junior a hockey and You you have one coach. Who says you know what I'm going back to the? I'm going back to the young days for the kids and I'm kind of more about participation and the experience for these kids and to be honest. I'm not really I don't really give a shit if we make the Memorial Cup. I want these kids have a great to three years here. And I'M GONNA I'M GONNA I'M GONNA probably have more more imbalanced in the lines than you normally would expect from a coach because I want kids to be able to play as opposed to the other guy who goes. We're winning at all costs and I know how to do it. And I've got a bunch of success at doing Bubba I would. I'd be curious to see how I would react to that myself as a parent you know that I might be going. You know I guess you only know your kid you know he might be better suited here to go with the soft touch you know. He's better better equipped And not as well equipped over its winning at all costs you know so. Yeah I think that's one of the struggles. Parents have in that they don't they don't understand they think that If you're winning that means there's good coaching happening this good development happening. That's not necessarily the case. Sometimes you just got a good group and they the and these these guys are just fantastic out of the gate and you can't mistake winning for development that's that's that's one thing and I would say at the same time when you're looking at a place you know a coach you want your kid to play for. Ideally want happiness to be part of that whole thing and coach can quickly take that away to Emme development doesn't happen unless the kid loves going to the rink and coach can take that away in such a hurry. That's that's a great thing said great thing. You can't mistaken winning for for development you know. Interestingly Enough Steve when you watch social media when you look at your social media and and there's a bunch of parents out there proud who who post their kids hockey game on online who put up a you know a shot of their kid or something whether it's a shot of in playing or after the game and it's like make way to go Perry Galardo here two goals tonight. ABC Plumbing won the Game Bubba. So you will see see that right. Some people don't agree with it. Some do the parent will say well. I'm just giving my kid a push and stuff like that. What's really interesting? Steve is used seldom. Seldom see the kid himself posting a bunch of Shit but what he did in the game not yet. But you don't see other kids come I angle. We kicked ass tonight against the other team. You know it's it's interesting to me that the parents would the parents love doing it. Love doing it. I know I know a friend of mine. All he does all. He does put a picture of his kid up to tell how he performed in the game. And you never. I never see him up there when he loses. I I only see it up there when they win a game and you know it's all I can do to go tell the dad you're killing the kid man you know so that now this kid gets rewarded only for winning the only for winning really well. I'll get your dairy queen. If you score a goal tonight right by. I always loved the thing that I learnt from from someone I forget who taught it to me but but praised the child not the deed. Praise your kiss for when when he has a bad game to see. Your effort was so good. My my my children's colleges grandfather I think is a great. He gives them Dole right for school like rewards them. Now that's worth the reward. Yes but what he does is he makes them send their report card and yet they have to cover the marks okay. They've got an email that and not have the marks included but have the effort art.

"I don't know if you remember Carlton. The Uni any center there were big twelve foot tables snooker tables so you're talking early eighties right I I. I think I graduated high school. Yeah I know I did. I did that and then and then when I went to apply to Carlton. It's probably much tougher to get now. I know it is for kids and I went to see the registrar Because they didn't have the Mark Steve. My average coming out of high school would have been probably probably stretching it if I say sixty percent steve when I when I was the school right and and probably a bunch of remarks and can you look at it again just so I can get out of high school. Can you remark that exam. See if you can boosted is it up to fifty five so shit like that and I went to see the register. I'm not lying. I went to see the guy and try and say I'd like to get in. You know I need aid I need a break and and this is what the guy said. Do you have the money it was. It was seven seven hundred bucks a year Steve to go to school. Why Yeah I mean? You got a kid in college. So Do I two kids in college. Yeah mine's on the road to so it ain't cheap cheap it ain't cheap and anyway so that's so I got in there so I drove a van in the summers for Molson special special events. Then they hired they hired quote Unquote University students and so off I went and then they have this new job of campus rep that they started and I was the rap Carlton so what happened when I applied villa job. My Dad said here's listen. Here's what you're going to do. They're gonNA ask you a bunch of questions Russians and you're not going to know the answer that was. My Dad was pretty realistic. He already knew you wouldn't know he. It was the same guy dropped me off at Carlton. The first with my books and briefcase and I said thanks a lot. I'm going to be a lawyer. You Know My dad was a lawyer. Write a judge a politician and he he stopped the car and he shook my hand and gave me a hug and he said you're not going to be a lawyer cool. No you're not don't waste your time. Okay you're not. I've been to law school anyway. So he said you're just GonNa answer answer the question with I don't know I remember the humane repeat it. I don't know but I'll find out I'll come in early. Stay late and answer on my phone recalls. So he said that's how you're gonNA answer all those questions that you don't know and anyway I went to the went to the interview. President of Molson's for Birdie came at me sat down smoke the pipe those days inside and said but What what what are you thinking? You're going to do to help us with the university. We want to increase increase. All the beer sales right at. You probably get thrown in jail for that now saying we want all the kids drink her. There's a there's a fraternity system here all the houses and I don't know but I'll find out I'll come in early. Stay late no answer on my phone calls right and the guy was like. That's the best answer I've ever heard. I think you're you're good. You're good to goal okay. First Question Steve. You're good to go of. When can we wait when I think we'll start next month and off I went Steve? Thank you dad thank you dad. Thank you dad when I when I when I was fine. I didn't know what the job was. No and I. I knew that I didn't know what the title was. I assumed it was a sales guy right back. In those days you had four or five sales guys for the big beer companies service Labatt Molson carly and each guy had a territory and and it was make calls and you call all the bars and stuff people would remember but that from back in the day. I don't know if it's like that anymore. The businesses changed completely. But those were the old days where our Brian Kilrea brother. Jack was Molson Rep when I got hired. They're Great Guy Jack. Jack's dead now but he used to. He called me the germ instead sort of Jerusalem on your. That's nice during during the summer job anyway. When I went out there I thought it was a sales job I just assumed and so they had four or five sales guys but they also have two guys who are called sales promotion guys which was a much better gig no calls? You looked after events that the breeze sponsor Sir and and teams and so when I got there I had the guy's like here's your I saw five guys stuffed into one little corner room with the little portable dividers and he said here's your office here and I have my own office tape taped twenty-three I said of course I do right and he said you're you're gonNA look after the university and you're going to look after Rodeo which who sponsor out here and the coach dinner and cfl stuff and the oilers. Well they just threw in the oilers at the end there when they're listing off the things you can look after this is going to work with you here and but you're the their age you're young young and and we want to make sure we're represented while you know back in that day. They were the big sponsor of the team Muslim sponsored. All the Canadian teams right. So well Anyway I didn't I this puck and greet and next thing I'm down there handing out shit from the oilers and and meeting. All the guys is not not the guys. Mark Messy Wayne Gretzky. Paul coffey just grab fear and I had season tickets right by the bench. The answer was just unbelievable. I think the dose Steve Back. Then if I'm not mistaken in one thousand nine hundred eighty five I think I was. I think my salary is is like forty two grand or something but anyway those were when when you talk about the eighties oilers and the Shit I used to do. Man Oh my God remember. This is all in one night. Steve this is a typical night. So Mark Messier Clothing Company at one time it's called messy manufacturing or something like that and they made these Jean jackets with with leather on them. There was sort of high caller. Jean jackets real real eighty stuff. Almost seventy stuff you know. I like to good high collar. Jean Jacket back in the eighty S. Yeah we had these. They went a step further and they were flashy colored patches on and stuff like that and he had a fashion show at a at a bar one night so we all pile in there at a big four door Pontiac Friesian and we got snapped. Everyone got snap and and Kevin Law and I went went outside. I don't know probably. He didn't smoke but I did. Or something anyway went outside and I was showing my new clubs. Okay we're hammered and he's those are nice. Let's hit a couple okay so this would be. This'll be this would be the equivalent of and it'll be down the market. Okay somewhere with your car parked and he gets up on the roof of my car and I hand them a five. Aren't Steve and a real golf ball. That he he balances on the hard courts and and and wings. A couple Steve off the roof of the car. Okay and I said do another one again. So anyway he gets up there and he. You know when you're over the ball Stephen Golfing you sort of flexing your knees a little bit and and setting yourself self before you're GonNa hit the shot right. Well he gives it one bounce up and down to set his feet bank and caves the roof into the car. Back in the car we went we started punching it from inside to get the roof back in shape. And so don't worry about that. We'll get that fixed. And then at the end of the night Kevin took coughing went home and Messa centimeters. Kevin where to go and Kevin got teased as being a bit of a teetotaler back in those days I run home and fuck that. Let's go get them right. And let's do that okay. Two in the morning and we all pile in my car mezza sitting on the passenger side front. There's a chicken between us and there's a few couple people in the back and we're driving even down the freeway and he's saying what you're going to slow let me drive so I go to pull over. He goes no no. I'll drive. Just move your feet and your hands ends. And he takes his left leg. Okay puts it over the over. The girls sitting in between and his left hand and so now he's bombing down the freeway Steve. That's how he's driving my car. He's got his left foot on the accelerator and that sounds safe safe and I'm grabbing cassette tapes. Okay and just holding the tape and I'm giving giving everyone wanted to. He's actually just grab the tape. Okay you know pull it out a little bit. Everyone opened the windows. It'll be like a wedding and throw the cassette out the window but hang onto the tape. Okay so this is how we were driving down the white mud freeway. Okay into Kevin's neighborhood and family area that we lived beautiful home and ram the car right up on the front lawn. Steve Drive it right through a flower bed onto the front lawn and park it right at the front door. Four okay on the steps of the front door. This car and and mark is hammering the Horn and Pfizer flicking on all over the neighbor to in the morning. And and Kevin's Kevin's door opened out his main door and he couldn't open it because my car there anyway. That's all one night stevie. That's all in one night..

"Moves. I'm sorry that's that's happening to you you but a really good place for sick people to recover is down in nova scotia. Okay okay and it's it's really good there. You're going to enjoy the weather <hes> so we're we're going to. We're going to look after you and we're going to rehabilitate you so you're going down there for a while. Okay yeah mark. Messier tells that story who who would who would get exceptions on a team right the guy superstar right he if you're going to give anyone a little leeway. It's going to be him and and he said when that happened. I was never ever ever late for playing again. I was early at practice. I stayed late this guy i it completely put him in his place <music> but i would imagine though that that was a time in history where messy was probably not feeling very good about like in terms of his personal security right in terms of finances as compared to where they are right now where you know that if mark messier being paid by two thousand nineteen standards i bet he pushes back in that situation like what are you gonna do like this feel like today. It's a different deal altogether. It's everything's under the microscope. The fans are aware of everything. I bet that you're privy to of that because you're friends with mark messier a bet you the average oiler fan doesn't even know that story to sort of put pressure on say there or a coach decides to to really give it to a player like that and you know and threaten to send him to the minors and you know what the follow from that was when when marco's obviously stay with the team for a good long time you ought about the fall it was when he got hammered by say they're sending them down to the minors is he absolutely took control of all these other guys on the team that once in a while said i talked about a story i think was jeff. Buca boom who were there in the playoffs and mess call the meeting of you know for lunch and it was during the playoffs a team team lunch and <hes> and book. I can't make it. I gotta go there to get my family. I was i was in the dress who happened and and he just ripped him one. He's shit of what your family. I want to win the stanley cup. You know f your family f._u. And everything else getting the game so so it it filters down you know when you get this leadership from coacher a g._m. That that starts to take judgment and don't discount to us t._v. Right sir these guys make for us. These these guys make retirement money almost every year that the top echelon players and generally for the most part. I know it's a it's a big generalization but those aren't the guys that caused you a lot of problems right if you think of the the the one percent superstars in the n._h._l. Not a lot of them were that outspoken in a negative manner towards the team they show a little bit of frustration but the most part elderly laced. He's the consummate professionals if anything they're boring as an interview regular they don't step out like that but the middle guys that again you know to me that are making even even save five million dollars. That's monopoly money to me right like i can go away forever for on five million dollars. We i live as i've seen it with with a lot of these guys and we've all we. We all know millionaires. Their lifestyle requires a fair bit of income to so they get. They do get hurt if you say what am i gonna do well. I'm going to trade you. I'm going to buy you out i'm going to do you know again in extreme situations where you and that's what i would suggest that they are at the bottom of the barrel. They don't seem to have any direction and they don't have it. They don't have a superstar player now so anyway but if they did and that was a problem child or if they were having issues with that or the mid level guy this might be the one time where you would say yeah. You know what we're getting rid of this guy. We came and last last year. What are we gonna come. In thirty fourth. The worst we can do is thirty two. We just need this this this think with still you know what i mean and one story and it goes back. It's a lower level with just the right just because i was there i was down downstairs <unk> at the civic center one day talking with brian abby and cure is in the armstrong's were first cousins. Brian of my dad were first cousins stuff. Anyway just happens at this. Lady is down there. They had some some hotshot kid traffic there was in and she comes down and we're off to the side in the oil and she walks heresay mister jerry. Can we talk to you for a second and she says my son you know he's he's really to be here and everything they just want to mention an elegant the name the strong i play my sorry has always played with co host and you're using best players here. We do so on the road dot and killer without a bead. It looks over and he looks at bert o'brien. He says make sure trade. This kid to someplace that uses escorts walks away. It's funny. You say that there you go. Here's your entitlement yep. Absolutely you know what jimmy jimmy lets us make that are rb computing web poll today so it'll be about entitlement hockey player elevate discussion so as they move through triple eight aided junior and then the n._h._l. Do today's top level hockey players see more entitled and difficult than elite players from say twenty years ago. The options are weekday morning entitled. No they seem the same. No i find them better or they never seem that way and leading the way right now <hes> is pretty much everybody at least acknowledges that there's an entitlement issue there <hes> forty six percents a way more entitled and thirty one percent say they seem the same couple of bits of feedback to while i got at this lt rights coach dabo ten years ago and it was horrible mainly the parents though but when the kid went mom make the coach play me more and and she comes up to me aggressively but playing her kid more i just gave her the whistle and cold day chris g rights. Just your local rink when the triple.

"Yet. The ottawa senators led the greatest defenseman david david had fall apart. They let let family squabbles invade become invasive throughout their old dresser. It becomes infractions <unk> win win. When when we were all down there even always knew that those guys were going in sixteen different cars in fifteen sixteen different directions and nobody ever made them. Sometimes you have to get rid of some some people before they're priming. Remember started that there'd be dropping a simple story but some of the great lakes of soda with all the crap. You have to put up with jimmy. There are some i'm great side. Points in one of the great side point was meeting kevin lowe and being out in two thousand five the hand kevin's place watch a couple of games that were going on and kevin santos. Jimmy win remember because he was not being but they think they're dealing with getting rid of ryan. Smith are dealing with the whole ryan smith thing and he said you know some of the hardest. Things is getting rid of some really good players. There's a year or two before you want to in order to make the organization a little bit better. How are you going to even bring in talent. Whether it's a person in a suit <hes> <hes> whether it's <hes> the next free agent not that they have a lot of appetite for that anyway or whether it's keeping a a young player around when they hit unrestricted free the agency <hes> when when you get that reputation after a while you you're not going to be able to to turn that thing like you now have to at this stage of the game not only show the fans that you're going in the right direction but you also have to show all the professionals that might wanna work for you whether it's on the ice or off of it that you are to it'd be taken seriously and that you're a good place to work for here. Here's the other here's the other problem. Can you guys hear me now. Yep yep yep. I've been trying to weigh in the the last five minutes and then finally realized my my mute button was on anyway. Here's the here's the other thing that that that i it was funny. It was interesting. It was hilarious. It was great fodder for social media. The thing went viral but as much as much. It's funny that thing was is this uber drive by those players wherever we got to go inside and and you know i i particularly people were calling for the guys head who drove the i'd love. I fucking love that guy. I think it was just great. That sharp enough to flip is as much as sometimes. I hate it about this thing. Being invading baiting guys private lives but but take that for what it was is a bunch of disenfranchised players okay a bunch of disenfranchise players so so you're not to buy in with team to buy in with a system to buy it first has to start with the players you know it. It has to write no matter what you say or what you do or how much you pay or how much love you give them or how much exposure you give them if they're not buying and you've got nothing you you got nothing so when you got those three or four guys who are in that that cab drive in that cab and go off on the team and and kill the practices or or who's <unk> who's playing on what line and all that stuff at some point there the g._m. Or the owner or the obvious would be the coach or something has gotta gotta go. Whoa whoa what the fuck is going on here. You know and they gotta sit those guys downer or someone's got to get in there and go listen. We gotta get this in order. We gotta get decent order. I before before we can do anything you know and and that's just that was just a snapshot of a few guys madge. If the whole team was in in a bus and they recorded it you know so. I don't know if they ever did anything about that or you know. The people are always interested it in well. That'll be cool to see what the coach does if you'll be embarrassed or what he's going to yell at the players but find the general manager of that team. I'm freaking out here. Go what the hell how did it get to this. You know we're all in this together boys. I think it always again. I i hate to keep dwelling but it seems like every issue that the sends have had had under their umbrella over the last couple of years you can always trace it back to money and ownership even this uber story. You're talking about because the crux of the conversation sation that by the way was you know. I don't think anybody i had the right to broadcast that out to the world via the internet but it got out there but the crux of the conversation was about we don't like the coaches we think that the coaching re right now is not not very good and if that was a conversation about i don't know scotty bowman then you'd probably say say about the players well they you know they need to look selves in the mirror but they're having a conversation about yet another discount coach that they found in the bargain bin and the reason that that guy's coach of the ottawa senators even as an assistant is because the owner wanted to go cheap there that conversation. You probably never happens if the proper investment is made in one of the most crucial parts of hockey team in that is coaching right the only not to be contrarian are in but the the the only thing that that an actually agree with you. The only thing that that makes me it gives me pause on that. Is that now we also live in a world where you have a guy. They like the jimmy said you gotta have a babcock great so you babcock in there and he's he's mike babcock story you you haven't we all agree or everybody agreed was the highest musulman after coach available. They paid him a boatload of money and now he gets questioned by everybody because a second year player fire doesn't like the way he's getting used in the playoffs allegedly in all like so. There's no there's it's immediately the inmates running the asylum on almost all all he's teams now because nobody nobody could become scotty bowman now because you went last long enough to win that many games if you dare last long enough to win games you blow through so many players it'd be great because there's no fear the fact that how exactly do you intimidate a player anymore to do what you want him to do that. He doesn't wanna do be in today's market. You the player's worth way wait too much money. You can't get rid of him. The player's worth way too much money can't send them down. You cut his ice time down. Everybody's all over social media. Everybody's judging these coaches. I mean it's you're right ottawa compound because they use these discount coaches but even the highest price coaches are getting getting questioned by second year players. We've had the two good years. I mean you you. You you look at toronto. The kid has had two good years but what does that stretch against anything else the babcock's in the league what fifteen years i mean it's just a incident untenable situation. I don't understand how anybody could be a coach or even try and sat down their systems or do anything that you want because as soon as the players decide they didn't. They don't wanna do it then. You're the one that's on. You're you're the one that's on the hook for you're done. There's just nothing left to you can insert your will well at all of these guys yeah steve. You know what alan steve you know. What were you talk about. The <hes> the inmates are running it the you know. The rats are running the freaking ship up here. You brought scotty bowman up years ago. Glenn say they're you know who was who did they put up with nothing. They put up with. No shit from anybody you you know and and you don't see that anymore. You get that famous line right jimmy from you're out with your good friends. When you talk about slats you know i mean imagine that fast last warning and now the paul coffey situation what was his famous quote was. I'm taking a coffee break greatly. Let them cetin will figure it out later. Nowadays it would he would have been fired. His wife would have been fired. Everybody somebody with everybody and slides. His family would be would be to hockey because a guy is great as paul coffey. They couldn't get them signed or something. I it's just it's it's crazy. Wait you know and there's no there's no putting the genie back in the bottle but i mean this is what these goats are dealing with. That doesn't take away from what you're saying. Steve you're right. They're using discount coaches. He he is a no names. These guys don't come in with any pedigree whatsoever so these kids read quicker to jump on it but some team and some are i would say the pittsburgh is a little like a- and and you know there's there's the odd time the other team stand up and show some backbone because when when these players do act out they ship them off they say okay. You're not name at least value value. You're not worth all the crap you know jimmy. We're not putting up without a note. We know your grandpa. You're the phil kessel sort of thing and i'm not. I'm not putting him in that category. I don't know if that's if that's his problem but you know they just move on. Is you know we're not. We're not gonna let that culture be here on. It was not like that. Let's do this okay if i'm the coach or the owner of the team or the g._m. All of a sudden these kids go public okay with their statement. You go ahead and do that. You've got this this entitlement that you're going to do that. You know what i'm gonna play that game too. Okay so ferrets for example says the oilers is a shit show. I'm gonna i'm sure elie at the time okay. I'm gonna come and go. You know what your ship player okay. You're no good the other night your frigging minus eleven through fuck and four games and your shit right. Why don't we play that game. Then i just think think that some guys handle that well and some guys do not and personalities come out and it's tough because it's funny because you mentioned sidney crosby and the guy said lots of head coaches since he came into the league back in oh five and yet he never seems to have a problem with any of them. I think it comes down to this. <hes> you know some of societal and some of just how one person varies from one to the next some kids are well raised. Some kids are raised. Jackasses and with jackasses get paid. That's when coaches feel the pain right but does it and and that's that's a fair point but you know this is where this is where it somehow the organization you know your your your foster. Parents need to step in and to me the greatest example. Obviously i'm very biased but the the greatest example is the greatest sports franchise on the planet. Which is the new york. Keke's you know i don't care who you are and we will overpay. Oh and you've got your guaranteed contracts. Your name's not going on the back of the sweater. You're not having facial hair. You're gonna compare yourself in a certain manner and if they will they will pay your contract and ship you along. That was certainly they're in a unique situation because they have they. They make more money than god they can. They can afford to do these things but they also. I'll have to have <unk> to your point. Stephen to jim's point. They have to have the organizational fortitude to go ahead and decide yet. You know we're going to get rid of you. You're a top your top player. You're in the league but you're gone because you're not doing the yankee way to a certain level a lot of teams in the n._h._l. Have enough money and enough room that they could actually do that as well you. You don't enough to decide not everybody's got it doesn't have to be avery that everybody on the planet can agree is a despicable human being when they when he plays on their teams get rid of you could get rid of some of these other guys are open up their mouse and it doesn't take too many examples to get nine hundred other guys to toe the line. 'cause they start to remember. Just how good their time is right in very may david. There's a lot of weather guys that aren't like that. You don't have to go as far as the trade the guy because he's because he's an idiot or speaking out but at least sit the fucking guy for a stint stint resolve if you wanna you know if you want to say well the team's. Not you know there has to be some changes. I i hear that twice three four times a year from players coming out going well. You know we're not in the best situation and there's going to have to be some changes with this team. You know shut up you yeah. Well you start you start with him. There's there's your change and your exactly the trade them. But how many guys would you have to trade to get the rest of them splitting up. You know what i mean. It only has to happen a couple. We'll talk to me you know or or like you say send them down sending them down as hard but now but with betrayed or sitting them it. You don't have to do that the tang guys you just have to do that to a couple of guys and then it's right if because everybody's looking online health of you can give you consider this guy you can see you can certainly set me yeah talk to and and i go. I've i've i've gone to this story before as i'm prone to repeat myself but oh way and people people might get tired earlier takes but <hes> mark messier pissed around one time and missed a flight okay or was going to miss a flight and he phoned say there and said look. I got fucking flu or something you know. He made up some excuse but he wasn't sick but he just wasn't gonna make this flight for for one reason or another and sader sader said no problem okay took any he said i'll call you tomorrow. You know they say was sick and he said you know what moves..

"Good good and address the anger that surrounds the ottawa senators among the saints fan base al what do you think right now like what do you make where the sensor at well. I'm certainly no. I know i know analysts like you are steve. I don't i don't follow it that goes through but <unk> part. The absolutely mystifies me is what is the direction direction. You can't even i'm not even sure you can argue over the direction that they have because it's not even clear cut are they. The people that they that they offer contracts to the people they let go. It doesn't say they're not rebuilding. They say that retool. It's all semantics here and there but what is it that they're truly truly clearly trying to sell to the people of how do i know. I don't get really. It's it's. It seems like it's like jimmy's running pink. It's it's just phenomenal. What what what these guys are sorting out but they're not alone. I mean listen not not picking on jimmy now that he has the affinity to it but i mean the oilers if not the best certainly the top three best best players in the in the world and they're getting anywhere either but at least it looks like you can sort of figure out what it is. They're trying to do in bringing in lucci <unk> when they bring him. I'm an open that he was going to be enough left in this sort of ride shotgun and help some of the young stars play save for something small still being a quality player point to me with ottawa's was done that that makes sense to you steve i would say that i'm just looking for some concept like what is your endgame even if i'm dubai in various concept of twenty twenty twenty one and you'll have unparalleled success then even if you go ahead and do that well how long will that last like to three more years before they they all hit unrestricted free agency and then you go through this entire cycle again like what's going to change between now and then and <hes> i just i don't know what the end game exactly is at the stage. You can't find one analyst that says twenty twenty one is gearing up to be a successful campaign for the ottawa senators. Nobody analysts everyone. Nobody can can seem to find what they can't crack the code of the ottawa senators for what it is you're trying to do like they got lots going on. They just they have to behave like n._h._l. Owners should behave in. That's be ready ready to write a bunch of checks when that time comes and i don't think they're willing to do that. You can't be cheap man. You can't be cheap n._h._l. He's trying. This guy's is relying on. I don't know you think l. but it looks like he's just relying on a bunch of luck. Hope this works out. You know i hope all this works. I'm going to save a bunch of dough. Oh and i'm going to go with a bunch of no name guys. They just can't to your points. They get into being cheap. They don't they didn't spend that extra million dollars to get the guy you really need or the goalie really need are the defense for nearly 'cause they wanna save some dollars. You go to get a coach. May me made me these coaches that they get the red headed guy you get the puffy guy you get the guy with the mustache gosh. Where's the pedigree that you finally go and get somebody that you really saying. We're we're in. We're all in on this. We're not we don't need to save three million dollars here. In in a billion dollar industry you need to say to three million dollars will end. You're not playing the game. It's like me golf with you. You know i'm not really planning him. I got one hundred bucks. You guys are playing for our grant. It's crazy. I think fans in this town right now are just waiting for some sign. You know because season ticket sales are gonna be tough. There's no question about that. They're doing that. They can from the standard marketing angle. Oh how ever i mean they need. This was the summer where they needed to do. Something and i think everybody was looking at that indicator and we've talked about it on previous v._s. Episodes something like okay. Give thomas chabad an extension. He was eligible on july first. Let's go there lots of guys who became our f- as at least eligible to be re signed on july first and give them their extension and there was no buddy in the n._h._l. That <hes> that needed to be signed more than thomas shibata to get an extension and the fan base a little sense that you you're going to do which is say you're going to do and i don't know maybe it's a case. He doesn't want to reese on. I don't know the answer to that but <hes> fans are looking for something right now. Some reason to have optimism moving forward and it's just not there every other every other fan in the in the league as you know has got something to lean on with their team a little bit from here to there so i don't know who's who's worse team florida. Nobody nobody nobody this year but they have been terrible the last two years and <hes> you know when you look at the other teams around them that didn't make the playoffs say just in their division and you mentioned the florida the panthers while those guys over they oh they got sergei brodsky for example and a couple of other key guys that they picked up anton stroman for example so <hes> they've been busy and they've been trying to improve and i just i mean i would like to improve. They just don't have to pay the price tag that comes with that. What what are they. What are they shaping up like with draft picks. Okay where we're at least something there they can look at. You know you always always hear this from time to time goes yeah we got. We got two or three kids that are you know close to being coming up shortly. Oh he's got that going on yeah and that's that's the thing they're they're really on the right track. As far as the guys they brought in when a trade away carlson when they traded away mark stone they picked up some good prospects in awesome really high draft picks same thing with matt duchenne <hes> so they're on the right path there again. Fans want to embrace that fully okay. It's a rebuild eld. We get it happens to every sports team all cycles through their star players. Get old and you have to rebuild at some point it just right now. Just doesn't feel like they're willing to pay the price tag for a full rebuild so when these guys are you f- as and the team itself becomes a real stanley cup contender that <hes> that they're going to keep that team together. I think the teams in the tank. This could be there for a while. You know the blue jay stevie these guys the chance of chances are taking when young guys that are coming up and destroying it you know they're destroying it and and baseball in toronto's rejuvenated man. You know they're going to get drilled this year. They're gonna make the playoffs but you know those young kids. They broadening. Let's do that roll the dice stevie roll the dice angry take a shot. There's a big difference difference between the lines though jimmy and that that you can draw some parallels for sure but <hes> when boba shad and vladimir guerrero junior and whoever you're talking about all these he's young guys when it comes time for them to get paid. I have a lot more faith in the wallet of rogers communications than i do of eugene melnyk right is seems always go back to how can it not while the difference the difference for sure i mean rodgers could easily could easily which is a little bit the typical toronto to face mask because because he could easily spend ican spend with the with the new york's and anybody in the league in major league baseball. He's got his deep pocket as there is on the planet so so they can go whatever way they wanna go ottawa's. I you know if we believe the melniks got the money that's fantastic but he's he's got a clear cut history three of not wanting to spend it. That's for sure well. I don't know how they're missing the boat. You know that they're missing the boat. If you look at the leafs for example you know the guys that went out and got they're always moving guys back to when they heard that coach and paid a bunch of money to get where where where's ottawa when whenever it's got their you know l. throwing their hat in the ring and ottawa's nowhere you know whether you like mike babcock or not <hes> or hiring these other guys who are proven guys none of that shit ever seem to happen as far back as i can remember anyway in order signed or signed a big key guy or making the blockbuster through trade shit like that. You know they're nowhere right now. I'm doing that sort of a sign where you rub your money. Johnny manziel thing that answers all the the questions. You just asked i mean that's a every head coach. They brought in. They may very well have thought him to be an excellent coach and we're really excited about a great guy a great hockey man but you can't get past the fact that they've had a whole mess in a row now where it's been their first job as an n._h._l. Head coach and coming with that is a lesser price tag and so it's again judging. What are they a training ground. Are they a training ground for for coaches. I mean outside outside of their their their one little series rob when they had when when they went the old old oiler win got him brought in montclair and a few of the people that was an even that was probably an old deference to to join that was probably a few years past john's best years as well right. They bring him at a._o._l. It's like it's all they bring it hasek three years too late when he was great they bring in a gaping on the guy's name steve but the guy from the calling from pittsburgh <unk> tom rasco dombrowski so that's great goalposts add more personality than that guy but still they bring him in when a a two or three years too late there every everybody's a little bit too late in oh sorry we can pick them up and say when john tonelli went. The el al is years back so that's great so thousand games too late but good for you. You got the name recognition. They don't get p._r. That's for sure the oakland pier of a stayed government town and how to get people excited. I'm much they do not understand. See that the best s. coach they ever had. I thought or the best move at least who's the mustache guy but the big bushy moustache. They're a plate and win. Pick on mclane yeah so oh. That's how far back i gotta go to be excited about this team. I think in two thousand seventeen was pretty exciting. Better conference final that that was pretty exciting. That was the and then they so the following year are they go to sweden and they were in pretty good shape. Their record was decent. They made the matt duchenne trade in and around there and since then that that was probably the last time i was israel truly jacked about this team right but if if the way history played out in the way all of these things that bart's do come out that are the to be true because they seem to be agreed on all sides. Somebody in that organization had to know that that that dressing room was falling apart that didn't happen over a week of in over a month so and where are the people that are supposed to be a <unk> deer point earlier. Jimmy you know when when you look at the the oilers or you look at the pittsburgh penguins in the ones that have been perennially successful gas well they have. They may not know. Nobody's gonna know everything what the players do but they have their finger on the pulse. They know what's going on they can the goodwin's can nine -ticipant the people that they need need to get rid of and move in other people or at least a focus on on what sort of dressing room they wanna have what sort of culture they want to create yet..

"G. so be listening for that right now. Though let's get down to business special guest today is a good friend like us. He was a host on e._s._p._n. Radio for a long time always had had good sports steaks and you know what at time when sends fans are angrier than they've ever been. We need his anger more than ever jimmy. It's angry al well some about somebody angry else. <hes> you know he may not be the funniest may not be the best looking. You may not be the most athletic. He may be the smartest. I got no idea where i'm going with this train. I hope hope is angrier. Look at me blushing right through there. That's great. It's great to define a podcast guys. You know congratulations doing they'd be the only the way i could find what steve set up for me ladies and gentlemen. It's angry al armstrong and he joins us on the program and <hes> and by the way congratulations. You're now a deputy mayor. I understand correct. Yes you're amongst royalty now. It's it's fantastic <hes> after nine long years of additioning. I finally stepped up. The one base got the four extra votes. I needed my small town and the deputy m._r. Which is great. It really has good sounds good well. I'm still i'm still reeling from the accolade. You gave me jimmy. Jimmy with your intro was nice. We have histories. Steve me angry. We got lots of history like. I think we did a little show at one time to when i was here we'd do we'd try to lower short cells else that history didn't last too long but no i've maybe told this story before but <hes> anger and i were thick steve's back in the day and i said let's go down to toronto for the playoff game and i'll let our way and some of this and i said you gotta drive because i gotta be fucking drinking in the back of the van okay so and you were and i said well. Do you have tickets for the game. I said don't worry about that okay. I'll get i'll get us in. They're all fine. I'll just make some calls. We'll start to drive if i can't find him by kingston on the phone we'll turn around and come home and then sort of that went further to oshawa finally found tickets and then sorry jimmy but did you mention what game it is. We're we're trying to get into. No i forget you can pick it up from here. You can pick it up from here. So i made a couple phone calls and off. We went and parked the car and went to get into the arena yeah. I remember yeah a bit so you can you can tell the rest of the story while your memories fade because after kingston i'm pretty sure <hes> we were over our limit for a for carrying glass by glass. I mean empty sambuc adblocker bottles that you were just firing back and see inland so this unknown unnoticed. You've heard it a bunch of guys but this was game seven against the leafs the famous leam third period game where he could close everything but his legs in order to get in. There is going to be no problem. I am more and more skeptical. I am more overjoyed by the fact that now the thirty eight eight or forty eight year old child in the backseat has decided to amuse himself the last two hour drive part of the drive by kicking my headset back and forth angling in the fetal position the trunk and threw it was i was lying on my back. It was a headset. I was kicking your head. Muko was born. We have another hour to go or or something yeah. Yes and you know he's. He's not listening anybody. He's calling again. You can guess you. The final quality made went through and it's got on the phone with him in. He said the big man said listen. If you don't have <unk> if you don't have to get in there if you can't get in with <unk> gyms pass or whatever give me a call back. I'll make sure you get into building no problem. Jimmy's fallen course dies so good as i do. He's drunk out of his head. We go into the we go into the media area area where you know with the game. We don't get there till the second period which is a history that we have as well because there was a pretty pretty famous game with in in toronto with the team canada with was the jackson the overtime game vinnie lacob a game steve sure yeah we got there by the second period because sparking couldn't read the the damn tickets they always start at eight alley always started going gretzky lake. Where are you guys know this year that that's a national anthem. There's two empty seats by the radke. Family gas assume should be in them. Yeah yeah thank you perfect and of course he couldn't peak stay for overtime because he knows too much hockey for monday but anyway so we get down there gets any we we do get into the entrance. Where in the entranceway steve we break by the entrance. You can see sort of the players go by in this one little section but we can't get any further. There is a diminutive diminutive fella. Who's in charge of security. Jim is getting louder and louder and getting a much more sensible thoughtful by the moment thinking really picking his words carefully. They're looking at me because i'm the only sober person. They know that he's gonna follow her. At some point time and he starts he decides against start insulting thing this fellow at some point time we've we actually come across somebody who was reasonable and i feel like we are five seconds away from getting in jimmy's calm down jason <unk> is getting back to reasonable and as this lady is getting his. I swear i don't know because it didn't play that way but as she's about to in my mind say our guys oh you just go over and sit here. You'll be fine. Jimmy pipes up with well. Thank god you're reasonable because hitler got some sort of conflicts of some failures. His line was exactly little hitler is to an adventures behind me aw listening to jimi at that point to the largest gentleman woman who i've ever seen in my life looked at me and said he's definitely out and you better follow. That was the end of the very much. This is fantastic the diatribe the and he doesn't stop because the diatribe on the way out he just that yes. There's a couple of words he asked said to this guy yet. Just a wonderfully or out on the street and you know what it was all over. Steve steve is jimmy didn't have his credentials with them. He reaches in his pocket because he's upset now now. He's going to straighten things out because we're outside the door closes. He reaches in his pocket for cigarettes and pulls out his credentials back in the van. We went stevie back in the van was just great spending time with the well you can imagine you can imagine angry angry say you know what i i'm fine with not spending any more time with you. Now get me something to eat. Get me something to eat otherwise. I'm gonna kill l. you with my bare hands so we went to we went and had some pro pro games. I think those are the days how you're a little mean al because you've you drop me off at my house. It was about three or four in the morning by the time we act and steve. I was relaxing in the back of the van resting so i pulled my shoes off. I put my shoes off to relax and we're gonna when we finally got in front of my house. He said hey hey wake up and get out of here and he he threw my shoes steve. You wouldn't let me take my. I choose to walk through the snow well after that story. I'm surprised you didn't just get in there and just kick you out just like physically nudge it with his foot and just kick you to the curb. All the the thing is you've seen it's the thing is whatever it is whatever magical god satan given power that the jimmy me has its you just want to hold him under the water till the bubble stop a you know that there's something innately miss wired inside there when you go. You can't just finally pull the trigger. It is forrest gump without the lock. It's just it's like. You just have this person in front of you that he just. I don't know what the but but i would have to be honest with you completely honest. I would have been fine with those two guys killing him. I just couldn't do it myself. He's got sick a high opinion of you. James just see see those steve my whole life my whole life. I have one goal and it's creating memories for other people jack. There's you know sputter remember yeah. I don't but look at you. Remember every detail so i've created a memory for young al yeah it was it was it was a wonderful they just i often wonder because you know even at the municipal politics level such high regard <unk> a truly historical figure that your father was and what the fuck he ever did to deserve the progeny that he i mean this is a statesman. I get old old-time states from the kind of people that they make statues about and what the hell he did to get like. I don't know whatever he drank with very that night. There's just you got to stay away from it. A jungle roast it's turning into i was at a rose last night roasting guy and one of the great ones that the guy harpoon me with last night and i was chirpin from the crowd and the guy said hey jerome save your breath. You're going to need it later on to blow up your date. Okay well so far. Are we been using his powers for evil. <hes> we're going to use it for good here in a moment talk a little bit about what he thinks of what's going on with the ottawa senators. I want to tell.

"So we're going to be good though with this whole Green Bay Chicago thing sure you're good with the packers dominance of the bears Steve Worn Project <music> welcome to the project. You've landed on a weekday podcast where we put our feet up pint talk about sports in whatever we're at the Royal Oak on Hunt Club. It's episode eighty to our guest. Today's Ottawa Sun Sportswriter Donnie Brennan who of course with both host media how you doing donning. I'm very good. I'm glad I'm not on the patio anymore. There's a little bit when the out there and it was blow my hair around Steve. I you know I get all crazy when my hair gets blown other place. Tell me about the Santa Beard you decided on like that's a big beard. You've never had the beard that big before. It's never been this white before. That's for sure I was when I was younger <hes> man I had a beard for a while. It was on that big. Maybe not maybe not but I've just SORTA gone downhill of late. I've let my I've been off for a while so I didn't bother getting my haircut and drink in the diet beer so bringing the diet beer but the reason that I have the beard though and the ball number of reasons but one of the front one of the friends friends says that I look a little bit like Pierce Brosnan with the beard okay or George Clooney like and then she also says she also says that I it slimming because it Hides Might Double Chin Ten okay now I told Brian Rooney thing. I assume your friend has some vision problems. No she's actually quite able able to see yes all right but I told Brian Kilrea about the Double Chin series the other day when I saw him at the golf course and he says you don't have a double triple Chen. Thanks nice to see you again to. I think he said something along the lines of you look like a billy goat. Say something like that about. I was like there's a lot of things Donnie looks like but I don't know and when does it become a billy goat just out of curiosity. I'm not even sure that's a killer. Time reference is it is so let's get to know Donnie Brennan a little bit because you're on e._S._p._N.. Radio a lot of course you're right for post media so a lot of Ottawa sports fans know who you are already ready probably don't know a ton about your background. You're not an Ottawa Guy Right. You're from up north. Yes I'm from North Bay. Ontario very nice. What was life like in North Bay for you is that we big sports guy growing up you playing all the sports like tell us a little bit about life? They've grown up in North Bay. Yeah Yeah I played hockey. <hes> baseball of saying we played baseball up until the age of fourteen and then you couldn't play baseball anymore in North Bay from then you had to wide and all they just didn't have any baseball leagues from then. You had to wait till you're I believe believe sixteen or seventeen to play in the men's fastball league but there is no anybody not notice how stupid that was well. It's all these thirteen year. Olds have just finished their season. They WANNA play somewhere. Yes yes no it was it was disappointing but I played golf. I was she steve Steve. I don't even want to tell you how good I was on the golf. Because you see me Golvin Allen. You won't believe it and yeah I my father was a sports editor of the North Bay not I didn't know that yeah and when he <hes> he passed away when I was thirteen he was forty three and I used to go to events with him all the time like he used to bring me along is I was a little buddy right and I saw him do his job and I think it stuck with me. In the back of my head was I was in high school and you know you come to that time in Grade Twelve the guidance counselor and okay you've really gotTa make a decision on what you're going to do with your life because you're almost out of here so we've got us set you on the course of some sort of career or whatever so I just and it probably looked like a fun job right but I never had an idea until roses Loz Day and I said okay journalism you know so there you go well. You're obviously influenced a great deal by Your Dad and boy. That's awfully young to lose your dad. Tell tells me tell us a little bit about what sort of a guy your dad was all he was. He was a tremendous guy he was a he was a real sports. Guy He played he played fastball North Bay but he also <hes> played baseball growing up and he had a trial yeah with the old Brooklyn dodgers years and years ago that's kid so I he was a good ball player. Just a great guy everybody you know when he passed away and his funeral and the wake and everything like that you could really sort of see what he meant to a a Lotta people and the kind words that you heard about him yeah I mean I guess I was thirteen years old and we we went on trips together. He would take me on like a boys trump. We go to Huntsville North Bay an hour and a half down the road to play golf for two days. You know stay in a hotel and stuff cool yeah we did. He brought me ARGOS Games. He brought me to Jerry Park to see the expos. I never got to Jerry Park. What what? What did you like about Jerry Park all Voy I well? I just remember it was one weekend. There may have been two games. I I saw I just remember you know it's an outdoor small quaint little place and <hes> you know Mac Jones was playing Field Jones Ville and I remember we saw the San Francisco go giants and who had Willie mccovey and Willie mays in the in the lineup saw. Does that make me sound all those guys were like well we are all. We're both older than me other accurate yes we went to a trip. We went to see the expos does play in Montreal and then we took a train to Toronto to see in Argos game so that was a pretty big weekend in the in the life of eleven year old kid. You wish you were covering baseball on a regular basis is baseball your if you had to pick one sport because I know you love every other sport is well. You're a big bears fan like we were talking about off the top. You love hockey like where does baseball fall in the pecking order because you obviously have a really strong heritage really strong set of roots in that Sport Yeah Yeah I it's it's funny because I think a at one point. I decided to want to be a hockey writer. When I came to Ottawa back in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine when the Ottawa sun started it was as the hockey is the beat guy for the Ottawa sixty seven's in the hall Olympics so I and my goal was to someday they cover the N._H._l.? And accomplished that I covered a lot of football with the Ottawa rough riders and the renegades and the red blocks and in the last two years. I've been lucky enough to cover the N._F._l.. Playoffs they've sent me on the road cover the playoffs for the while a different city each each week and and it's just been a blast. I've covered the last two super bowls which has been a lot of fun but to get to your question the this past past year. They sent me to cover the Blue Jays in spring training in March so I was in Dunedin for almost four weeks and leading up to that time I always thought I would I would love to lease just one year and you can't develop enough contacts or whatever in one year but I would. I always thought I would have loved to run of covering a major league baseball team and you know I get down to <hes> to Dunedin and just knowing Mos ahead of me. I thought at the time I'm either going to not want ever cover baseball again or going to really want to cover it again. After this run at spring training is over and I loved it it was it was a blast it was I'd love to be able to do that every year. Just even spring training you know for off for four weeks every every March well the neat thing about covering a baseball team having done it with the Ottawa Lynx in the early days as the play by play announcer back then is that you almost feel like you're part of the team after a while because you're just hanging on the so much hanging out got. You're talking to guys well. Batting practice is going on you talk to the manager before the game after the game in his office and at the time there really weren't that many people were covering the Ottawa Lynx and you just kind of get get to know all the guys after a while and it really is like no other sport that way so so baseball is. Is it number one. Where would it fall in your pecking order? I just I'm fickle outweigh. I bounced around all over the place. During the baseball season I love baseball. I can't wait for the N._F._l.. Season to start this year being Chicago bears fan especially but even when they were lousy and losing to the packers all the time now that they're now they dominate the packer so I'm more excited about that. Uh The bears are going to have a shot at or going to be a super bowl contender this year I really do they were twelve and four last year. They've made some made some nice improvements. They got the they have the bears defense. I always loved you know rock and the and the guys I just think it's going to be a really fun year to be a bears fan but in the in the winter I'm I'm a hockey fan. I mean I love covering the N._H._l.. Too so you know. I wish I could give you more definitive answer but I don't really I like the way I've got things going now like I'm coming off run Steve and I'll just I'll keep this very short but I covered the Grey Cup in Edmonton in November right and in January I was I mean I was in K._C.. New New Orleans Chicago finally an Atlanta Casey twice during the N._F._l.. Playoffs then I did this in March I did spring training for four weeks and then in the playoffs I covered the Bruins in the second round the Bruins in the third round in the Bruins in the Stanley Cup final so I've just been on you know it's funny the way our industry is right now and a lot of people are losing their jobs with minimizing. We don't travel or cover things nearly the way we did but curiously curiously. I've just had the best run of my thirty years in the business like it's been incredible. I don't I don't know how it's happened but it's Donnie Brennan Ladies and Gentlemen From Post Media and clearly living the dream and you bring up the game seven of the Stanley Cup final and I'm sure that people listening when we go oh my God I'd give my right arm to be Donnie shoes. They're covering the action and you've got some level of affection for the Boston Bruins. I know from Your Childhood Day so it didn't go very well for you. Though I'm not saying that it was a case of well as an article you'd like to have back. It wasn't your best writing. No no no it wasn't that kind of it didn't go very well for you. Maybe tell us the story of game seven the Boston Bruins the St Louis Blues Playing One game for all the marbles and what happens to Donnie Brennan of post media that day so we show up the Arena T._d.. Garden <hes> in the morning for the morning availability ability with both teams and we're about to go out for lunch a group of us and got got a message from the boss Michael Traicos who also works with post media was covering it to the boss wanted one of us to to write a early call them for five five thirty deadline for the broadsheet papers in the chain. So I said Okay I'll do it. We went out for lunch. He went to hit back to his hotel to tavern APP and I went back to the rink to write so I write for a couple of hours. I read an early calm to file and it's five thirty game doesn't start 'til eight and I'm thinking I'm going to go inside. It's a beautiful day. I'm going to take some pictures of the crowd starting to gather them the mob scene ready for the viewing viewing party and so I'm outside and it's crazy and I'm taking pitch the pitcher savings and I think okay. I'm going to go back in the arena so I'm walking through t north the north station. It's this train station attached to T._D.. Garden and I'm walking down a set of stairs and it's kind of congested. It's like now almost six o'clock right. It's kind of congestion congestion so I make a quick change and I try to go down the other set of stairs right beside it as I'm doing this. A lady kind of walks walks in the same direction and Steve All I remember is looking down on my feet trying to trying to change directions looking down on my feet and my right foot caught caught behind my left..

"Mention this one one day you having the ring and yet a coughing your hands. And I don't know if you're playing on your. And and you walked right by a forklift when asked over tea kettle on it on Palance, and we're going to be setting out in a little blog on our Twitter. So everyone can see it because it's on YouTube actually, Bonnie things ever seen. What have what happened there? You've never walked by a forklift before. And on new called Pango, bang, y'all. And I got a we got thank Todd walls for that. He doesn't take the blame. But there's no question that that ace reporter with targets hood. Oh, some absolute with come on. I walking down those stairs. Life's good. I think I got a brand new pair of khakis on there. I'm looking. There. Those like the Janko ones the wide leg. On. No, I had style. One pal. I went to play. I wait here come on with five five hundred place and made me look, slim and everything they were good. They were sharp video. Keira makes him look a little wider, Jack the video guys it's right there on YouTube tangos bang you'd we're gonna having blocking down there. We're going to have on her. Media to see whether those are two wide or not. And we're going to see if you got ripped on your nice suit make in place, or whatever. Okay. You get you check that out. But here's the deal about that that the forklift, okay? Number one. I'm walking down there. And yes, no doubt people that know me. No. I wasn't paying much attention. There's two things that came to mind for me number one. The the New York Rangers were in town. And I could hear a t the bus was in front of me. And I could hear that the bus was rolling peso. So I'm thinking to myself number one. All right walk down. There. Gotta go on not thinking about the bus just yet. The driver of the Orkla. There's morning Panger. So I looked you can't see this. I looked to my right and say morning probably morning big boy from guy so from JD, John. I just I say that because you know, everybody's a big boy. So he'd be boy good morning. And then I don't see that the legs 'cause they're so low to the ground that they're there, and I'm telling you what I ripped the bottom of my pants. I rip a knee of my pants and don't forget I had like I've no ACL. I I that point. I'd Sixers on my last name being hurt like hell. So I gotta pick myself up. Get all my books up spilt, my coffee, try that normal white my pants, and then look up and I saw that bus and I'm thinking to myself there in the bus, and they saw this this. This is not going to be good. You could see the good news is you'll never have to wear those pants. Yeah. Or what do you what do you make of your your auto, a sixty seven's going twelve in the first three rounds of OH L playoffs there on believable. They're unbelievable. They traded for Mikey BPH. But before that they they had another goal that with UN. I mean, really really good. And their their money. They're good. They got a lot of drafted players. They remind me of the team that we won the moral Cup with nine hundred eighty four. I'm when last year I went back there because they they had me drop the puck. I don't know. I don't like crumble brag. Yeah. I I don't want to say that Brian Kilrea vote amuse the top fifty all time there that got the puck. But anyway, you know, but. You're all brag. But I mean, if that happened, you know, then that that was really I'm actually I am more humble than what I'm talking about. But so I did get do..

"And I mean, it's rare listen you can have carry price and paying fifteen million dollars a year if you can find that in your in your in your in your cap, but look at the Boston Bruins right now. I mean, you're hilarious. Nominal this year. They're paying good money to be a backup goalie, but you're in the year was the backup goalie not really they're both kind of one as or one one. I don't know what you call them both to to number one. And that's the way they balanced out. And that's why you've got to fresh is even Grassi didn't play all the games this year. He had some help along the way. So that he's a fresher guy right now in the playoffs. And for those listening who don't know paying had a professional career as a goaltender. There might be a few out there paying who didn't know that. I wanted to talk a little that's why we're asking you so many goalie questions, of course, we want to talk about your career little bit. I notice that you play for the Ottawa sixty seven's in the OH L and had famous probably the most famous junior coach of all time Brian Kilrea as head coach. The greatest of all time is no question. I always enjoy when somebody asks me my junior days because every time I see former Ottawa sixty seven or fellow team, for example, Bradshaw's great coach for Columbus. And Bruce Cassidy the great coach for you know, for the bought the Boston Bruins. And like Bryan kill rate was so good. He had so many good saying he would say stuff to me in between period. That if it were said now, and it got out there, you you like you couldn't believe someone like, for example, a few like that. Let's let's hear example. Yeah. Well, I or I can go with it. But there was there's a number of different things we were playing a game in in in the su-. It was my final year the year we won the memorial Cup. And I was celebrate my guess it would have been my nineteenth birthday would have turned twenty late February..
