"Hired a quarterback coach today by the name of Brian Johnson. And he was there or get your for the Giants in the Stanford quarterback. Totally different guy guy. Shame. He was a quarterback on the Utah football team in like 2007 or 2000, and they beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. He was the quarterback, and he actually called the plays. And they finished number two in the country. So I was working in solid state at the time and running a station and doing a morning show and he graduated, and I offered him a gig as a radio talk show host. And after contemplating and doing a few shows, he decided this isn't for me, and he got into coaching so long story short. He was at Mississippi State. He coached Dak Prescott. He was the offensive coordinator Florida Florida most recently and then he just got out in the NFL. By the Eagles is their quarterback coach. Had he accepted that job that I had offered him in radio all those years ago, he would be starving still in eating Macarena, but he made a tremendous decision. Got into coaching, and now he's the quarterback coach of the Eagles, and he probably wouldn't take my call.

"We think patriot for sponsoring this episode of the excellent creative podcast and now back to our interview with brian johnson. Look let's get a little more specific than about that. What you have studied the wisdom of all of being shipped loss. Fers you've been studying modern and psychology and understanding how to apply those insights. What are some things that you would say. Okay if you want to have a great twenty twenty one if wanna get twenty twenty one off to a good start. These are things you absolutely must consider implementing in your life. Now i mean. There's so much there for short chad but i think it starts with knowing the game we're playing society has got it wrong. I mean it's no measure of wellbeing to be well adjusted to a profoundly. Six society krishnamurti says right and this is not a new challenge. Twenty five hundred years every culture across all times basically said don't do what everyone else is doing right now..

"We're doing that on a volunteer basis. And i was in the throes of launching my business at the very beginning of it and i remember making that decision of what this is going to be really hard. But i'm going to get up at five fifteen every morning and i'm going to spend an hour and a half studying in the morning and that's just what i'm gonna do and and that's before everybody else in the family gets up and it's before work and it's tough going to have to go to bed at like nine that we're not gonna watch tv at night. But i remember making a decision and it was hard for a couple of weeks. But then i remember there was like a switch that flipped in me and suddenly i felt like i haven't worked of a sense of mastery over my days. I noticed that things were clearer. It was almost like. I've heard world-class quarterbacks talk about. When they dropped back in the pocket and everything kind of slows down and they can see receivers running. They can see things happening before they happen. Because everything kind of slows down for them when they're in the pocket. Things are happening so fast and i felt like that's kind of what happened to me in my life. I could see things developing. Because i was taking that time i was setting aside that time in taking back. Some degree of agency over my life and my schedule and all of that And it's funny. How i mean beyond the benefits of study. Meditation prayer those kinds of things beyond the benefit of building those into our life. There's there's something that unlocks in our psychology when we have disciplined and regimented Practices in our life that changes the landscape of our entire existence. Way full stop. that's exactly it. And to take that agency and decide used a couple words that i use a lot of my work decision and you said a switch that flipped. I talk about flipping this twitch. So my whole work is predicated on aristotle's idea of you demoniac..

"Ideas and your work. That idea of mediocrity immediate authoress being stuck in the middle of rugged mountain where you're not truly doing anything at a high level we're just so we wanna be i wanna be on an off and i've structured my life such that. I can do that now again. What my days looked. Like when i was in more of a philosopher teacher mode vis-a-vis the entrepreneur mode. They're simultaneously very similar in very different. So i still do the shutdown complete. Go to bed early. Meditating even more than i ever have in my deep work hours in the morning are really important to me. But then my schedule was completely packed. Whereas before i literally had nothing in my calendar other than maybe you're caller to with a friend and my coach and otherwise it was just pure deep work so i kind of inverted that but i've maintained my fundamentals is what i call them eating moving sleeping etc and that deep work first thing every morning non-negotiable some of how i approach hip. I know just sort of from having done this show now for fifteen years. I know that there are people right now. Who are going to email me. Because they're thinking right now. Well that sounds great for brian. This sounds great for todd. You who both run their own companies. But you don't understand. I am someone who works for a boss. Who was very controlling. And you won't let me have flexibility. About how i spend my days and i know how i would respond to that email but i'm curious to hear. How would you respond to somebody who says listen. My life is very much at the whim of other people. Right now Ah how would you recommend that person begin to take some degree of ownership of the rhythms in their life. Yeah playfully you would probably be more diplomatic than i would be. I'd step all the way back and say look we got to create some. We've got to create some agency here..

"Brian is the founder of the mayes founded optimize dot me and. I'm so excited to have this conversation. Because i know i've had i think one or maybe two conversations with brian for his work nominated to have him on our show. Brian welcome to the acts on the podcast. Todd i appreciate the imitation yes. I'm a huge fan of you and your work and Excited to connect so for for those who may not be familiar with your work. Could you tell us a little bit about your background in a little bit about optimizing in the work that you do yeah spent half of the last twenty plus years as a founder. Ceo and the other half as a philosopher a lover of wisdom. I've raised ten million dollars in building sold businesses as a social entrepreneur to social platforms. And then as a philosopher. I've created over five hundred philosophers notes on a couple of your books and some of my other favorite books and then also created an optimized coach program masters series that that we're really proud has been scientifically proven to boost people's lives and and all that good stuff basically. I'd like to integrate ancient wisdom and modern science to create practical tools to help people optimize their lives that can become the best most heroic versions of themselves. I love that. And by the way when you say philosophers notes what you mean are basically in-depth dives into the concepts and some of very difficult and complex books that you sort of somehow extract the wisdom from and put them out there for the community. And i've been so impressed with the work you've done and how well you can. Simplify something that is maybe a more complex topic How much time do you spend reading every week. Just have really curious because you're so thick and five hundred. I mean that basically indicates at least that you've read five hundred books in depth enough to be able to create philosophers notes. That would you know help. People understand those concepts. Yeah the way. I like to describe the philosophers notes there six page. Pdf says that. I record ms mp threes as well. They're kind of like many cliff's notes in the easiest way for me to kind of describe it as when you read a book. There's a big idea. Where three or five or ten. You kind of underlined and asterix and markle up they. Can we change your life. So i told those out and then i- i- riff on them. I connect them to other great books across different cultures and times and then most importantly help people apply them to their wives. And yeah i've done it for ancient stoic stuff to modern positive psychology stuff. I'm looking at my notes right now. Die empty than words to your great books and really just trying to help people who are super busy. Get access to this wisdom in a really meaningful practical way. And yeah yeah. We've had over six hundred of them..

I was just a record guy. I don't even know what records track. So anytime the truck what we call a record in the military we call it tow truck in the civilian sector. Yeah that's what. I look outside and winter is here in montana for sheer puking the white stuff which by the way actually love. I think the winter season is my favorite here in montana. One of the reasons. Why i like it so much. Is that obviously. Christmas is right around the corner. And i have very fond memories. Actually of when i lived in missoula when i was much much younger almost barely old enough to remember that we actually lived there for a few years. I remember going and finding our own. Chris mystery so we would go out. I suspect without a permit of any kind or the legal authority to do. So we'd go out. We'd find a christmas tree. We'd sit there and he's done this. They know the struggle. You're looking around for the right. One is tall enough as it strong. Enough whatever it may be it. Cut the thing down to get it in the car and you bring it back to the house. I don't know if any of you ever had this experience but you get back to the house and you realize not the best selection. It's a little bit bendy does not strong enough to stand up on its own little bit droopy and there's absolutely nothing worse than that unless we're talking about your dick because no one wants to wake up on christmas morning to a sad limp christmas tree if you know what i'm talking about that's right. And lastly, Bryan before we let you get out of here to that one person who's listening right now who's just who's just struggling with fear crippled with anxiety. What do you want to say to them? I tell you. I think that the idea you're not alone. You you're not alone. And it end even though it feels like the end if the end is not good. It's not God and that achieve Christian smoke. But I totally believe that if it's not good. It's not it's not the end. And it's not got it. You're not alone. And God will meet you at your worst place. It's like God God has a habit of meeting people at their darkest hour and just being the open for God to just come in trash into your world. And and and and he'll and change fix this things. There's the first about that. He would perfect that which concerns me and and allow God to come in and and doing overhaul and fix and perfect. That all those things that concern you. I just think that like so many people feel alone in this. And I just I wrote that book because I wanted to blow that out of the water. We are all of us are in the same. But we need to lock arms were not alone. Find someone that you can confide and find the counselor, and that that can can understand you. Yeah. And then all these big turning to God, you know, of not the religious picture of what God is, you know, but the real raw authentic gospel that says she's starting to prosecute weaken experience life, you know, and it's full of and and the love of the father, you know, so many were they don't understand the love of God. And it's so amazing. All of that this. Thank you, Brian that, you know, that's that's what I got from it when I was listening to the book as well as that. You know, you're not alone. "It's it's interesting too. Because I think a lot of the times we want to when you're about to go meet somebody for the first time you wanna look your best. Right. You want to sort of beat the best you before you meet with that person. But you know, what God says the exact opposite? He says come to me exactly as you are right now hot mess, and all and that's where God wants to change your life is when you bring him the burden, and I just sensed right now in this time, there's just so much heavy distractions upon our society in our world, and it's such a worldly distraction. And God is like I'm here. I'm here for whoever wants to come and have a relationship with me, you know, and a lot of times we hold back, and I just wanted to maybe be the first person to tell you if you haven't heard it before that God is waiting for you. He's ready when. When you're ready. He's there he's been there. And I wanted to just encourage you guys starting out today show with that. Because as we get on with today's episode, you're going to hear this powerful. Message from Brian Johnson about his own struggles. And how God showed up for him in the Darcus of times. Perfect part. I'm like, no, not at all. You know, God is available to all of us each and every single one of us. He doesn't love me more than he loves you. He doesn't love he loves us all the same. We just thank you so much for all of our listeners. We're just so thankful for every year. That's tuned in and every heart that's kind of been awakened or changed. Even as his on was speaking, I feel like there were people in their car people at work or people working out that just felt this tug the felt this certain change in them. And they didn't really know what it was. But they recognize truth. And I just pray that that truth would resonate in their heart and in their mind, and they will begin to see some of the lies that they've been believing about themselves about others about the world. And I believe law. Lord. And I pray that you would speak truth against those lies. And that truth would completely disrupt the exiled he and the fear in the confusion that they're experiencing in their lives. And I pray that you'll be able to see and recognize the truth, and they would not any longer believe in the lies that they've accepted or been told. And I just prayed that they would turn to Jesus for that truth. Because really it is your presence in your sacrifice that completely changes our lives, and as we're going to hear from Brian. That's what has changed everything for him. So we just pray that your presence would be with every person listening right now that you would bless them that they would turn to you and Jesus name. That's all coming up on the good life. And I I just love that song so much of it to famine, you know, what Stephen are going to do something a little different today. But I don't necessarily know if I should do it or not to be honest. This is something so personal and intimate. I feel like when God puts things on your heart. Sometimes you wonder like do I need to get on the mic. And really talk about it. But I just felt it so strongly my heart and Stevie looked at me and said, you know, what I want you to really share exactly what it is that God has put on your heart with our listeners because as you guys know this whole good life podcast. God is just opened the door for us and opened our eyes and ears to things that we've never really seen before. And it's been such a journey a beautiful journey in a process, and we really truly see you guys as family, and this is something that I would tell my sister or my brother or a family member, I feel when it's on my heart. I do that all the time. And so I told Stevie you're right. I am going to share what is on my heart and on the way here, I decided because sometimes you guys know with my words, I could kind of go all over the place and get really emotional. So I actually spent a majority of our drive here in traffic writing down. Exactly what I felt like God wanted me to tell you guys. And so I wanted to take this time to just read this out loud. I'm a little nervous. Because you guys know it's not easy reading sometimes things that are in your heart. It's really intimate kind of like a diary, but I'm going to do it. I'm gonna do this today. I feel like so many of you guys need to hear this. And I just want to take a second to sort of check in with you guys and share this because I feel like God put it on my heart for a reason. And this is more than just my words. I feel like it's coming from God directly. And so here goes. I feel like somebody out there right now needs to hear what I'm about to say what God is about to say through me. So if you could just stop what you're doing and listen to this and what God wants to tell you I greatly. Appreciate it fam-. I feel like we really got to get this out there. There's something heavy right now weighing you down. There's a heavyweight that you've been carrying on your shoulders, and it's actually beginning to burden you it's causing physical mental and even the spiritual sort of fatigue. Maybe you're someone carrying the weight of someone else's burdens, whatever that heavy distraction is right now, that's consuming. You can we just address that we reflect on that for someone out there. The wait is a painful heartbreak, and you're so desperately trying to feel complete. But let's be honest. You're broke into peace. Ses. I've been there. I also am sensing that there's a lot of heavyweight in the decision making department. Some of you guys right now are avoiding what you know. You've got to do many of you might be battling with the.

"Next segment. I wanna give a little behind the scenes Anne is not going to be part of this comes back for feedback says, stay tuned. O'brien Johnson is a songwriter and worship leader. And the co founder Bethel music and worship you along with his wife. Jin johnson. It is new book when God becomes real. Brian opens up about a mental breakdown. He had and how it changed his faith and let him to think about God. And totally new ways. We recently spoke with Brian about the book, and why Christians must challenge stigmas around mental health. Yeah. I think it's interesting how resistant the church has been to these sorts of conversations around mental health. I think for a lot of us group. The idea of mental health sort of a hippy dippy. Almost almost a pagan way of talking about real health. And for Brian Johnson. The sort of Genesis of this book and wanting to destroy stereotypes around mental health. I happened when he had his very first panic attack. I asked him about what that was like an and kind of how that affected him all I can say like, you can't you can't talk you out of it. It's kind of ever worldly feeling something that kind of takes over your body is for me. It's like you're outside of your body thing. It's a really it's a really scary saying it's multiple you can have like a basic panic attack. It can be it can be whatever. But you know, I think that main when I had was I'm Jay. In the house will so treat severe. Can't breeze can't sink straight. That's a scary. When your mind's outworking working? That's pretty paralyzing that sense of helplessness was so strong that you just can't read in a way, it's all consuming overtaking in anoxia, hell or hell becomes very real not that you're going down. But just that you hear out what? Hell be like. And to me that hell ABI ledge. I think that something that happens a lot. When we hear the people who haven't had panic attacks don't deal with things -iety here this wording Zayed's here. People who struggle with it. We had this sort of idea that it's just sort of a vague sense of unease or worry, a panic attack. This means you get really you get really stressed out. And what you realize when you talk to people like Brian about it's really like to have a panic attack is that it's very very real very physical very overwhelming sensation that's hard to. Explain and especially like, we kind of talked to earlier where it's especially here. Like hearing someone like him talk about it is so refreshing because you alive times, I feel like when we think of passer, especially kind of in that in the more like charismatic world who some variant in tune spiritually that you almost think of them as like not susceptible to something like that. But you know, I've there's been times where I've, you know, had something similar and for someone like him to be able to talk about it. And articulate it with that kind of vulnerability is really refreshing. Yeah, it's the Volna Volmer ability thing like putting his own story out there because you know, it's almost like the silent majority of people who don't feel like they can talk about it because they don't see anybody in leadership talking about it. And so therefore, they're flawed. You know, like, it's I think so for somebody in leadership to put it out there and say, I struggle with this to this happened to me as well just opens up the opportunity so much healing. Anything what you have when you have somebody like Brian talking about this who who's also in some sense. I mean, you can never really beat anxiety. But you can't find ways to help you manage and for Brian that took on a few different forms..

"Coming up later. Brian Johnson joins us. He has a new book out called win. God becomes real. And he comes on later to discuss why Christians must end the stigma around mental health. It is I gotta be honest. I mean, I love Brian Johnson loved Bethel and everything like that. I grew up in the charismatic world mental health was not something that was ever discussed. And my world was like somebody is starting to get their impression. It was like, oh, you're just not praying enough or your remember anybody saying does words. For a lot of that world. There was no distinction between mental health and spiritual health. Right, right. That means you're not spiritually healthy enough. If you're struggling emotion, the stigma, I mean, I was oblivious to the reality of mental health. And so it's a bold move and very exciting that somebody in Brian Johnson's position is writing a book a very vulnerable book telling his story about mental health. That's coming up later. That's exciting. Now, more important and pressing information Jesse. Why did you do a weird? Hello. Hello. One last everyone laughed and pleaser. I liked It's it. people shock and awe.
