"So while we're on the left side of the infield, for now at least, let's talk about the other guy over there whose glove you do not need to worry about. That's Brian Hayes. But the bet is another matter and still something of a question. I know he played through some injuries last year, even though he stayed on the field more than he did in 2021 and the offense was roughly the same as it had been the previous season, significantly below average, so that promise that we saw in 2020, still waiting to see more of that. Will we? I don't think we're going to see the 2020 version of key Brian Hayes and I don't think we need to. I don't think anybody here is expecting it, but I mean, a sub 700 OPS isn't going to do it. And they know that. He knows that. It's been weird watching the trajectory of his career because he does come up 24 games. I mean, he is absolutely unstoppable. Looks that way all through the 2021 spring training, hitting with power hitting to all fields is that and the other injures his wrist second game of the season and really hasn't been the same player. He was banged up with a few things last year, as you said, Ben and you know, I give him a lot of credit. He spent a lot of time this off season sort of looking in the mirror at how he was doing things, maybe overdoing things at times. He added some weight, his frame looks a lot better, but it's more about, you know, how do I do this smarter? How do I not injure myself? Like, I think he gets it. He's been banged up far too much, needs to be on the field, and I mean, he needs to hit. As much as we're talking about, you know, this season for O'Neil Cruz being about proving that he can field should be about key Brian a is proving that he can hit. So far, so good. I've liked what I've seen in spring. I'm a big mechanism with him is how well he hits the fastball. I know it's an overly simple concept, but if he's not hitting it, generally he's struggling at the plate, he's been pretty timed up this year. It's taken a few swings that have been like, wow, okay, you know, inside heat, 96, 97, he's getting around on it, driving it poolside. I've liked what I've seen there. He's a really good kid. He works his tail off. I can say a whole bunch of nice things about him personally, but yeah, I mean, for what is contract is in Pittsburgh, which I realize it doesn't mean that much elsewhere, but like he's looked to to produce offensively. They need him in the heart of the order and he just hasn't been good enough offensively the past couple of years. So you mentioned Brian Reynolds a minute ago and when you started your spring training preview about a month ago, you let it off with, as you said, the elephant in the room, Brian Reynolds, which is not an insult about Ryan Reynolds and his elephantine appearance or anything. It's just about how important that story is. So what does it say about the organization, first of all, that he wants a trade and how do you think this resolves? Will there be an extension? Will they pay him? And if not, does it trade make sense? And what happened? Yeah, this is so, this has been so weird, Ben. You know, since the Reynolds trade request came out in December, I did not expect to be getting that phone call that day. So that comes out, and I mean, it's not because Reynolds is upset with Pittsburgh. Anything like that. I mean, he explained this on the first day that he talked and basically said he saw his value one way. The pirates see his value another. I think the communication process through all of this has been not good. Borderline abysmal, where Reynolds feels like their 6 year $80 million offer is like take it or leave it, and they're not thinking that way. Meanwhile, Reynolds is asking for 8 and one 34. They're very far apart, but at the same time, then you have bob nodding. I talked to him pirates owner, a little bit ago at pirate city about. They value Reynolds. They respect him. They feel like there's middle ground, blah, blah, blah. Well, if there's middle ground, get it done. If there's middle ground, get it done. You know, if you say you want to sign Brian Reynolds sign, Brian Reynolds. I genuinely believe he wants to be here, but they haven't gotten I am. You know, I sort of look at this and knowing both sides, like it got pretty testy, the organization was not thrilled about the leaked trade request, the Reynolds side was not thrilled about how the organization has basically failed to pay him, which I understand Reynolds is not asking for a king's ransom. I do think that they can come together and get something done and it wouldn't shock me if it happened. I think the time to get it done would probably be like in the next couple of weeks. I think if it goes much longer, you're probably looking at, you know, they're just going to relax until the trade deadline and see if they're offers. If you pin me down and make me say one way or the other though, Ben. I do think they'll inevitably get something done. I think we'll Reynolds will take less than in the original ask. And I do think he wants to be here.

"Time baseball. Do you expect any movement during spring training in terms of trades? Because I remember last year there were a couple of trades before the season started. I know the Padres were in on a couple of different ones. I think mania came over the day a couple of weeks before spring training in it and then you had you had Rogers come over from Minnesota. I think it was the day of opening day. You expect any deals to happen during spring training? Well, you can't put anything past the age of probably might be. You have to do anything at any time. And the big name that's still out there is Brian Reynolds, center Fielder from the pirates who's requested a trade. He was offered a 6 year deal for about 76 million with no opt out. So it was better than the Murphy deal that Murphy signed with the braves, you know, it's probably a little light, but apparently they have a major gap and, you know, he wants to be dealt and this agency has used his playbook before and real Muto was dealt when he wasn't happy with the way the negotiations were going to Marlins. It took a year though in that case. A lot of people think maybe at the deadline is a possibility because the pirates, you know, they don't want to make a trade where they're taking a step back. You know, their fans, not too happy. I bet. It was nice. They brought mccutcheon back. That's a nice present. That's a good gift for the fans. Rich hill, but I mean, obviously this is in a youth movement. I love richel, but you know, they did some things. So give them credit for that. But, you know, they have some and they have some players too. I mean, T Brian Hayes, very good. I think O'Neil Cruz is going to be a really good player. And with Reynolds, so and they're not in a great division. I mean, they don't look like they could contend against St. Louis, Milwaukee and maybe the cubs, but I still don't think they're going to trade him in spring training, but that's the big name that's out there and being talked about. Other teams are saying they're asking for a solo like trade. I can't see anybody giving up that kind of prospect stash Reynolds really good players center Fielder, good, bad. I mean, he's not solo. I mean, there's a reason sono turned down 440 million and he turned down 76 million. That's a big gap, right? So there you go. Deal coming for them. But, you know, two good prospects, you know, that's fair, but I just think that I'm going to say they keep him at least into the deadline. I'd be remiss if I didn't talk a little bit about the Padres here as we get ready to head into spring train and have to be one of the favorites in the national league to come out of it. I think about it takes me back to the NLCS. I think the Phillies, they got better during this off season. I think the Padres got better during this off season. Let's start with the Padres. Do you see this team as one of the favorites coming out of the national league? Oh, they got to be. I mean, to me there, the clear favor in the west, and that's something. I know that beat the Dodgers in the playoffs, but the Dodgers clearly were a better team last year. They're clearly was a gap. Dodgers want to under 11 games. I mean, I'm not sure what went on there. Why are they let so many guys go? Didn't really make an attempt to sign the one thing they did try to do was design Verlander and they offered somewhere in the 70, 75 million range. I believe. So they were outbid there for Verlander, but other than that, the Dodgers, you know, made smaller deals, JD Martinez, and then they let so many guys leave obviously trade Turner and Justin Turner, two of the big ones, Tyler Anderson. Their payroll is going to be down in this day and age down like 60, 70 million, and they're going to have to and that's including paying 20 something million for Bauer that they're going to have to pay this year. So today end up getting underneath the threshold? No, they are over the threshold. That was, I don't know if that was a goal, but it seemed like they wanted to get the payroll down. They spent so much last year with very disappointed to lose to their rival, Padres after you saw it. They beat the Padres silly in the regular season, and then when it counted, Padres were fantastic and knocked them out. So, you know, they look like they're going to be a 90, something when team instead of under 11 when team, but clearly they're always a threat. But the Padres, I mean, you know, it just seems like there's some guys some owners right now. We have that era where there are a few owners that just will do anything to win. The Padres and the Phillies, the two teams, and they were rewarded for doing this, and they're continuing to do it. Phillies beat their, they built their team on free agency. You know, people say, oh, you can't build your team. You got to build your team from within, they built that team on free agency, and got to the World Series. So he's continuing with that to get Turner from the Dodgers and kimbrell and Taiwan walker. I mean, they did a ton, and they look really

"Now, AJ preller is willing to move guys that you wouldn't think he would move and go after guys who you wouldn't think he would go after. And yet I look at the Padres and it feels like they need a bat like a Brian Reynolds would be perfect for them. I still don't think Brian Reynolds is going to move because I feel like the pirates are maybe on the verge of something. They're not there yet. But with O'Neill Cruz who looks at every bit the star that his tools say he can be. With Brian Hayes with Nick Gonzalez coming with Jack swanky, having all that power in the outfield and Reynolds there with some pitchers on the verge as well. I don't know, Pittsburgh feels a little bit like where Ken just city is, which is that you need to start adding guys to this core that you have in place. And you need to start spending some money. So preller loves to go for moonshots and Brian Reynolds at this point feels like a moonshot. But if he's willing to give up CJ Abrams, you know, at that point, the pirates have to at least listen. And he's been willing to give up top prospects in the past. I'm fascinated by the decision the Orioles are facing because they obviously this has been a year of progress. They're playing better. They're nudging toward 500. And on the other hand, this is their play in the American League east. They're probably four teams are going to make the playoffs out of the east. The oils are almost certainly not going to be one of them. What do you do? If you're the ownership and you feel like you're turning the corner and you have all these marketable players. I got to say, I kind of dig watching the Orioles, you know, just some of the reclamation projects there. I've seen Jorge Lopez fail a number of places and now he's throwing 99 with nasty breaking stuff in his first real full run at the bulb. But I trade Jorge Lopez. Trey Mancini is a superstar human being. And a great addition to any Clubhouse and a leader in Baltimore and someone who's been the Paragon of consistency. And I probably trade him too. Because the Orioles are getting to a point right now where I think they need to start running themselves like they're going to be here soon. Like all of these high draft picks, whether it's adley rushman, Colton cowser, we have seen heston Kerry stag come back finally. It's getting to the point where they have to start to try and win. And they're not there yet. So you remain, as long as the rules are in place, here you remain in asset building. Hate to say it, but not like they got a ton of fans turning out right now who they're going to scare off with this. And it's been a pretty grim situation there for a while and frankly, you gotta see the plan through. But we're getting close to not cutting time. They're in Baltimore. They need to start trying to be competitive, we've had enough enough tankage going on for franchise for a while. I wonder about Cedric Mullins. I think he would be, for example, a great fit with the Astros. You see where

"Well, and I think that we probably were building into our expectations, the fact that even though they are not a good roster, they play in a planned division with the pirates, for instance, right? And there are even among the teams. There's vulnerability to that cubs roster, and so I think part of what we were probably either explicitly or sort of mentally building into that projection for ourselves, not the fantastic reductions, but was the idea that like, well, they can probably go beat up on the pirates a little bit. You know, they can probably take some from the cubs. They have within the division a soft underbelly that they could poke at even as they are also a soft underbelly that other teams in that division can poke at. But it is pretty gnarly. I mean, I think that when you're a fan of a team that's going through this, I think it is useful for us as analysts and even for fans of teams to think about the different kinds of tanking, right? Like to have an appreciation for the full topology of tanking. But I don't know that your experience of it is all that different if you're in the midst of a tank job that is going to end up working, right? Why don't we think about the Astros that way even though the kind of tanking they were doing was it was different than what the reds are up to or what the pirates are up to. I think it feels pretty crummy when you're in the middle of it. It feels crummy when you're in the middle of what we might deem like a process driven tank that isn't necessarily working that hasn't necessarily yielded the team that was expected like the Phillies, although it might be in delicate me to talk about Philly's failures today. Boy. And then there's what the reds are doing, which I think in some ways your right is much more similar to the pirates, but with like a more of an FU from ownership directly to the fans in some ways. I don't think that verbalized it. I said it out loud, but I would have thought the pirates were better than the reds coming into this. And that what they did was more egregious. Like maybe a little less noticeable just because the pirates were bad last year too. Whereas the reds were pretty decent last year, so that made it more glaring that they moved themselves out of the contender category into the non contender category. But the pirates were in the non contender category because they've been doing this sort of thing for years. If anything, to a more extreme extent, but they haven't started a season three in 22. Right, and you look at their roster and you're like, well, it sure stinks that O'Neill cruises in triple-A, but also like Brian Hayes is good, and that Reynolds stinking in triple-A, by the way, but I know it hasn't been going great. But you look at that pirates roster and you're like, there are surprising number of competent and actually quite good big leaguers on this team. So yeah, I think your experience coming in is a little bit different, but it doesn't feel, I don't know that it feels meaningfully different to you when you're a fan as you're going through it. I think that it is easier to intellectualize the experience and sort of distance yourself from it emotionally if you have confidence that it is being done. Both that it is being done in the service of winning eventually and that the approach to that is going to end up being successful. I think it probably feels very white, luckily, on the roller coaster, if you're like, all right, they're saying the right stuff. I don't know if they can do it. So I hope that this thing stays on the tracks, right? But I don't know that your experience as you're sitting there, you know, with your $12 beer and your hot dog is that different if it's something like Cincinnati, if it's something like what the Astros did, you know, before their current good team, if it's something like the pirates are doing, I think it just, it sucks to suck. It's been a fun experience. And I think the contours of that can vary, but I think the overall vibe of it ends up being pretty similar, which is like, man, I sure am not going to probably get to watch my team win today. And that, I think, is that's the worst spot to be in. You know, we've talked about this a lot about what is important to your understanding of your fandom as you're moving through a season. And I think having the ability to look at the team and say, well, they might be in this thing in the broader sense is really important, right? It feels good to be like, I might be watching this team in October. That could happen, even if your team is sort of on the fringes of contention that they would have the possibility is like really exciting. But on the base or more everyday level, being able to go to the ballpark and say, well, we could win today. Like, that's pretty important because otherwise, why are you gonna go? Despite what their ownership group thinks, like there's other stuff to do, like you could read a book or watch a movie or watch the NBA postseason or the NHL postseason. You can watch that for a lot of the summer because gosh, they go on forever. They really do. They last forever. Go see Doctor Strange and daydream about a world where the reds are good. But I think green struggles are sort of emblematic of this to me, because we probably praised them a bit if anything. I mean, we lumped them in with all the teams that were promoting their top prospects and putting them on opening day rosters instead of doing service time manipulation stuff. And here's green who's been a part of the problem. You wouldn't have expected him to be this pad. Has the great stuff and throws super hard and does miss bats, but he's given up ten home runs in like 20 innings. I mean, it's been ugly. Who could have thought that would happen. So that, to me, is like, well, they gave green a chance and he should have been good. There were reasonable expectations for him to be a valuable contributor there. I guess he's maybe not ready. Maybe he's had terrible luck, whatever it is, but that is not something I envisioned, if anything I would have said, all right, well, good for them that they're putting hunter green in the opening day rotation and that has just backfired horribly thus far. So it's really ugly. I don't know which has been uglier the hitting or the pitching. I mean, take your pick. It's like they have a 66 WRC plus. The next lowest team, the Red Sox and royals are at 79. That's a pretty big gap, but then you look on the pitching side. They have a one 67 ERA minus higher is bad for area. The next highest is the net at one 26. I mean, the difference between the reds and the next worst team in either of these categories is like the difference between the next wears team and some team wave up the leaderboard, even if you look at fit minus, the range is a little smaller, but it's one 32 they're at and the next highest team is at one 20. I mean, just big gaps like they're getting just lapped by the league. So it has been very, very ugly. I hope that things will work up. They almost have to. The 1988 Orioles, they started the season even worse than this and, you know, they ended that season 54 and one O 7, which means that they played at a considerably better clip over the rest of the season..

"And so this is the kind of trade that you're going to end up making when that's the state of your organization where if you feel that you absolutely need pitching like you need a stable bullpen arm and you don't view guys like paddock as fixable at least by you that you're going to make swaps like this where you might look back later if Chris panic is like lighting it up in Minnesota and go, wow, what are we going to do? But there's like a strange acceptance or has been a strange acceptance on their part that this is like a issue that their organization has. Now we'll have to see what the new player div regime does because it could be that they write the ship and then we look back and are like, wow, it's too bad that you let Chris pada go before you knew if it worked. Like that's the other thing about it. I'm like, didn't you just change player death guys? So anyway, I think that it makes a ton of sense for Minnesota because they still need help on that pitching staff. And if they're able to get paddock to blossom, great, and even if they don't, he can throw innings, probably. So that makes sense. I do like that the Rogers is now in the same division. There was a great quote from one of them, Donna, which one can't remember now that now the NOS is the best looking division in baseball to delightful. Because they're twins, you guys, if you didn't know this, there's one. No watching them pitch necessarily. But yes. Yes, you would not know watching them pitch. I liked them to try to do like a freaky Friday and see how long it takes us to be like, what is going on in San Francisco? Why has this changed? Yeah. Anyway, so I don't know, those are my thoughts on the Padres and pitching down, I guess? Yes, I mean, we've talked a lot about how the twins need pitching. Sort of sucks for them that they had to give up a really good reliever to get a star. So it takes away some of the enthusiasm. You just hope that things will click for paddock and that he will be a good starter for you for years to come. But in the short term, I don't know that it resolves itself. Well, and like pagan has had stretches of being very good, but it's been it's been a little while since that season in Tampa now. So we'll have to see what he's able to muster this year. Okay, so the big important extensions that were signed could Brian Hayes signed an extension with the pirates 8 years, 70 million and José Ramírez signed an extension with the guardians 5 years one 24. Also, JP Crawford signed a 5 year extension with the Mariners two. Notable. Don't want to not mention that. But Hayes and Ramirez, those were big ones because these are organizations that are not known for spending. I believe that their respective record contracts prior to these deals were both 60 million in Cleveland's case, the Edwin Encarnacion deal, and in Pittsburgh, case the Jason Kendall deal way back when, which if you adjust for inflation, that was still probably considerably bigger than this contract. Well, and I think Jeff, you pointed out when he wrote about this extension for us today that if you tack on the option year to mccutcheon steel, the total value of that contract ended up exceeding Kendall's, but it was not part of the initial, it was not part of the sort of stated initial term. So I think that the point still stands that the record was Kendall and boys that embarrassing. Yeah, it is. So this does not blow that away or anything. Still netting. But they got to keep their players and that's got to be very encouraging and a great relief for both of these organizations, particularly for guardians fans because Ramirez was closer to a potential trade and because the door was traded so recently, I mean, it's just the modus operandi of this ownership group. And so to see an exception to that is pretty exciting and heartening. I would think there were trade rumors flying about José Ramírez up to the day he signed this deal, basically, which I don't know if there was fire there or whether that was just smoke or whether it was like, well, if he doesn't take this, we're just going to deal him immediately. So we want to have some framework in place, but ultimately he did. And I'd say both of these players probably took at least a slight discount, right? Ramirez is incredible. He is great at everything. He is absolutely on a short list of the very best players in baseball. He is kind of the go to most underrated player in baseball and when you reach that point, which was Anthony Rendon prior to Ramirez, probably once it's like the obvious oh, he's the most underrated, maybe you're not the most underrated anymore. But now I think he still is. Just because it still is. He is so good. That proves the rule, I think. Yeah. He's so good. He's such a good hitter. He doesn't strike out. He walks more than he strikes out. He hits for power. He is a great base runner. He steals bases. He plays great defense. I mean, there's just no flaw in the game of José Ramírez really. So, you know, he's like almost Aaron judge's age. He's like 29 and a half. And so maybe he was thinking, I don't really want to hit free agency when I am as old as her and judge could potentially be when I'm 31, the way that free agency works these days and he seemed to really like it there and he seemed to really want to stay and I know that Francisco Lindor said he wanted to stay, but he also didn't want to take a discount, which why should he so he didn't want to Ramirez maybe was more willing to for better or worse certainly for better for guardians fans who were thrilled not to have to lose another great franchise player. Obviously they still have to surround him with good players, which is something that they have not done of late. They have managed to stay with inhaling distance of contention primarily because of the pitching development and Ramirez and then a lot of the rest of the offense and particularly the outfield has just kind of been a gaping hole. So you would hope that this would be a prelude to more spending. I don't know why it would be given the track record of this ownership group and the fact that they had Ramirez on just one of the most team friendly contracts in baseball for years and at least recently had not spent and used that advantage..

"Tweets already buster, bleacher tweets for a glorious Friday, Jacob stack at Jacobs stack 11 is up first. He writes in so you've made clear your Dodger fandom is gone, but admit it, you have a slight bias slash interest in the braves due to your son Jake, huh? It couldn't possibly be the fact that the braves are current world champions. We wouldn't be paying attention to the braves, right? Otherwise, or that we did the game last night. Well, I mean, the fact is, is that the braves games are onto my house more than other teams because of Jake. Let's go to Gary the no trash cougar writes in why wouldn't he's talking about Jacob de Grom here. Why wouldn't he opt out at the end of the year when he can probably double his annual salary with a new contract unless his arm falls off by then always a possibility, but he'd be a fool not to is what Gary says. Gary, his annual salary next year is $35 million. Do you think he's going to double that? The injuries that he's had? No. The question is whether or not he can be healthy enough to be in this year to get another big contract and how he's going to handle that. It is a surprise that with that $35 million cab on the line for 2023 he's already determined he's going to walk away from that. Our guy, Don Irvine is up next at Don Irvine Don writes in. How many games did the nationals have to win the season for Davey Martinez to avoid being fired? I'm thinking that maybe he's been appointed like the caretaker manager of this transitionary period of the nationals. What do you think? Okay, the nationals constantly change their managers, but one common denominator for a lot of decisions that they make, they don't like to spend money. So, you know, if the team's bad, I don't think that's going to be a surprise to anybody, per se, but I also don't think they're going to go out and hire another manager and pay two guys. He won a World Series, maybe they just let him hang out with all things are turning over. Right. Exactly. I mean, he can bring to the team along and then general managers say they'll analyze everything at the end of the year. Ernesto saido earn YC three 7 7 rights. And am I being overly cynical for looking at the Brian Hayes Trey contract you probably means in thinking this is the perfect contract for them to trade away in two seasons. It feels like the nutting's are content with collecting revenue and feeding larger markets. Yeah, I don't know if that's the plan, but there's no doubt about it. You know, that contract if Brian Hayes turned out to be as good as what people think, that's going to be looked at as being a valuable team friendly contract in a way that José Ramírez's contract was looked at as team friendly contract. That's going to increase his value in the trade market. No doubt about it. I don't know if the pirates have even talked internally about actually trading him, but it's going to make it more valuable. Last one for the week. Or in sleepwalker at or an 83 rates in, more likely to play out his contract with his current team without being traded. Brian Hayes or Wanda Franco. Only because their health questions now could Brian Hayes after last year, the issue that he had with his ankle. I think he's more likely to play out his contract. Wanda Franco, to me, is a guy who eventually is going to opt out of his contract. He's a monster talent. Already, that does it for bleacher tweets for the week, hashtag bleacher tweets on Twitter as you're watching games this weekend. Thanks everyone. That's it for today. "Thing that stood out to me as far as those awards are concerned. But they go gloves. Again, generally speaking, I think they get most of these right because we have we're so good now and being rooted in the data. But I'm hopelessly biased. JT Realmuto is the best catcher in the national league buster. Jacob stallings had a really nice year. I know his blocking numbers. I think specifically were extraordinary with his past all allowance. And that kind of stuff. But generally speaking for wars like these, I use a player's body of work to be able to sort of break ties because defense can be a little bit noisy year to year and obviously you're not watching them play defense the same way that you're watching them hit and evaluating them as such. And DT real much was the best arm in baseball. He prevents base runners from stealing better than anybody. His framing numbers are always fantastic. Baseball perspective had him third in blocking run. So across the board for my money, he's the best catcher in the national league and I'm sure I was happy for Jacob stallings. The pirates didn't have the chance to win too much this year. So that would say amongst all the words that I went through this morning. Those are the two that stood out. Surprised that Bryant snicker wasn't a finalist for that award. And surprised at JT real Muto did not win the gold glove on the national league. All right, hambo. Always great to talk with you. Later, boys. Get out. Bleacher tweets already buster, bleacher tweets, for a Tuesday, we got Andrew Campbell at real camp drew writing in, hey buster, is it possible that Nolan Arenado has a chance to either tie or surpass Brooks Robinson's gold glove total of 16, Nolan is 30 years old and only needs 7 more gold gloves to tie if he reached 16, would he retire as baseball's greatest defense of third baseman? Andrew, the, you know, I love you. But the word only needs 7 more. Only 7, 9. He is a long way away, and I would say this as we move forward. Brian Hayes is going to be a major factor because his defense is special. Also you wonder Matt Chapman with the Oakland seemingly ready to dumps salaries if they're going to move match Chapman. And if he goes the national league, that's going to change the context for sure. He would be a really nice fit for the mets, for example. Adam Smith is up next at Schmidt FIA writes in with posey's retirement. There's been a lot of chatter in TC markets about mauer's case for the hall. He had an incredible few years, but I don't know if he has longevity or numbers. What are your thoughts? Yep, Hall of Famer, lifetime three or 6 batting average, three batting titles, MVP in 2009, four top ten finishes MVP 6 time all star 2123 career hits, which is 623 more than buster. In his career, 921 games at catchers, 6 O three at first base, posey had more games at catcher in his career, 1093, 229 games at first, but Joe mauer and his time as they catch her was a difference maker. You know, the other day I was texting back and forth with Bruce bochy, and he talked about what an advantage it always was for the Giants that they had an elite offensive player at catcher and the same is true for the twins. Let's go to Brian at a player to be named later, Brian writes in love the show. Can we talk about unicorn Joey Gallo back to back gold glove winner elite feet per second rate and bottom 1% in strikeouts ever seen this combo before? No, not with somebody that big. Well, actually, you know, when Aaron judge is a little bit like that, you know, in terms of his athleticism, but I remember when Joey first came to the big leagues and you see this hulking guys huge. And I was talking with John Daniels, the general manager of the rangers, and he was talking about how like Joey's a much better athlete than anybody realized his boy was he right. Let's go to Don Irvine. What's up, Don? Don writes in, now that Kyle schwarber is a free agent, do you see him signing with an AL team to serve as a DH rather than the NL considering his defensive deficiencies and will he get a multiyear deal considering his 2021 season? Yep, he'll get a multiyear deal, I think there's going to be universal BH for 2022. So he'll consider offers from teams in both leagues. Mister jakey RS at mister JK RS writes in, now that the season is over, what's the feeling on the crackdown over foreign substances after all the grumbling? Do you think it had an impact on the game? Was there a big enough sample size? Yeah, I think there was. It was clear that there were pictures affected by it. You know, spin rates, you could tell that some pictures were affected by it. You know, we had Alex Avila on the podcast and he acknowledged and agreed with what I saw down the stretch that there were a lot of pictures who actually using foreign substances, good old fashioned bullfrog, that sort of thing. I think they found a middle ground. I really hope that they settle this issue because it really is unfair to all of them. As I said during the year when people would talk about someone like a Scherzer or Garrett Cole as a cheater, I'd be like, I mean, 90% of the pictures were using something. And I really would love to get past the conversation. Last one for today, Matt, but covered in confetti at kayaking Smith rates and there's been talk on the pod that Seattle, Texas and Miami may make some splashes this off season. But what teams would be should be worried about setting up to tank next year. I feel like the cubs, guardians nationals and reds are candidates. Congrats on the braves, World Series there mat hope you enjoyed your celebrations. Yeah, absolutely. Look, the guardians don't tank. When we talk about tanking and Taylor sorry to pick a scab for you, I mean, we look at what the Orioles have done a recent years. We looked at what the Astros did in the early 2010s. The last time the Indians lost a hundred games was 1991. The Indians excuse me, the guardians retooled. The athletics retooled. They don't tank. The Orioles, there's absolutely no sign that they're going to veer from their strategy, which means, I'd say right now, whatever the over under is in Vegas, if you want to retire, I think you bet the under on whatever Vegas comes up with your team, what do you think? Oh, yeah, empty account. Bet it all buster bet it all on that under. I'm gonna check that out after we're done. I'm sure it's not up yet, but the second it is, you know where you define me. So thanks for writing everyone. Hashtag bleacher tweets on Twitter. Again, we're gonna do another show. Next Friday, we had a great batch of tweets this week, so keep them coming throughout the week and please follow rate and review this podcast wherever you listen to your podcasts. And just to touch on a couple of other teams real quick, Luis Castillo and Sonny gray, two guys to watch for the reds, I'm curious to see if they trade them. If they do, then you wonder if they're going to be retooling. They have too many good position players to actually go into full on tank. And I think the what to watch for for the cubs, do they make a major expenditure? You know, it was a good sign that they're not tanking that they picked up wade Miley. Before we go, I just want to mention we got sad news yesterday, Pedro Feliciano, longtime left handed pitcher passed away at age 45 and his sleep at word of Perez colleague tweeted out that news, I didn't really know him that well, but everybody that did know him better than I just they were heartbroken yesterday. "I you know. I think i think bobby witt is the opening day third baseman for kansas city. Next spring modest short nikki. Lopez's second i don't know what to do with their lineup. But i think bobby wood opens next season third base and i'm going to predict something similar to wander except more steals like that's a twenty twenty five home run guy right away. I think there's batting average risk with wit that. There isn't with franco. But he's gonna steal basis if you told me bobby. Witt ended up twenty five twenty-five fix i'd buy that. I don't see any chance with him this year at this point. It's a damn shame. But what are you gonna do and harder. They have to play modesty and that might be the case on opening day next year. 'cause i wanna the heart wants to give you a big hug and say i love it. And the brain says i can see some service time in relation. He doesn't give you the full one. Sixty two games on the schedule and takes a little time to get acclimated to the majors kind of like waterfront. Go dead and at the end of the year. You overpaid for him. I don't see him. Honestly i agree with you. I would not rank top hunted right now whereas franck forty but bobby witt i mean. I want to get him in the middle of next season. And that's the problem you won't you. You're not getting him. You're you're paying seventy th overall to you'd have to. Yeah you'd have to take him in the seventh round if you're doing an early draft in the off season in a redraft league whose. Adp think it'd be more palpable him or wander next year in redraft down. Who you think you're more likely to end up with at cost franca probably franca. But if i have to take him in round depends like like milk. If i'm sitting there on a draft mid march and it's wander verses like who's an established a goldsman us or our not establish star really tough to avoid establish star. But i i i believe in ronco. By the way major difference between the two franca will be a number two or three hitter. I know it's not about six or seven to be six or seven and he's in a really terrible powerball park so those cope sixth seventh in that ballpark. Yeah no i agree. I last question here comes from champions to compare and contrast the nl centro third baseman moving forward and hayes in india. So india go into next year. The second base only believe and man. He should win rookie of the year. Jonathan india what a great season he's had Scoring runs lots of power. great year. I did not expect that from jonathan india. I don't wanna say avoided him. But i just i just didn't buy it And the reds told us this was going to happen. There were mussa's short man. I mean you. India over suarez. Next year suarez cannot have average anymore. Ca brian hayes and the to pennsylvania third baseman of my biggest blessed of the season. I have a league where i protected alec boehm and brian hayes. Like nothing out of these guys. Nothing in this league for next year hayes is leading off. Now for pittsburgh with that tells me is they. Don't think he's gonna hit for much power. That's what that tells me that vicky is. That's not his game. Yeah but i thought twenty home runs. I thought like eighteen to twenty two home. Runs was legitimate for brian. Hayes this season. I think they hit double digits other going forward but i think that could end up being ultimate ceiling. You don't see too many third baseman with this profile. No but i think he could be. He could be the inverse of match happen where he went. Funneling everything into hitting for power sacrifice in the batting average he could be more contact. Line drive oriented better batting less power but amazing defense too by the way matt chapman saved his season. He's got double digit home in the last like thirty days. The world series you know what. The orioles percentage was to win the world series. It'd be season began zero. I think it was zero. Point zero one. Yeah can't be officially zero. Because they're in it like yeah. It's close zero zero one. Yeah it sounds about right to me. My and the diamondbacks are horrific. I mean look would baltimore in arizona. "Eighty one games. Three hundred thirty seven plate appearances for brian reynolds. He's out of his mind right now. He's been excellent and they've actually formulated a decent little top of that lineup. There between reynolds frazier and and brian hayes. Who i know you. You liked as well so he did at least get one pirate okay. So they ain't got two of the three pieces that have been killing it but all three of them have been really good and you mentioned gambles catching fire for them. They picked him up off the scrap heap. So they're not a good lineup. They're not scaring any way shape or form not even with the destruction that they put out yesterday but they do have a few guys that are cooking and reynolds is one of them. I guess we're. I'm really curious what you think you can do. The rest of the year seeking keep up a lot of what he's doing. I don't know that he's gonna hit for another fifteen home runs or anything. But i think you get add in eight to ten and hit close to three hundred rests away which makes him insanely valuable especially even even though like the pirates lineup sucks and it's probably going to get worse that trade deadline because they need to move frazier the season he's having and then they might even consider moving. Reynolds reynolds is twenty six. He's not going to be part of the next great pirates team So like they could consider moving him and just getting like a hall. They'd have to get yes. Something like super elite. No because he. He's not eligible free agency until twenty twenty six. Yeah so that team control is is very valuable for somebody like him. So but i mean he will be aren't eligible for the first time next season you know they don't like paying anybody so i ki- could be a guy that you know like maybe atlanta or chicago. Socks would be interested in reynolds. Got into a high quality lineup. That would be nuts. Even a team like the yankees would. Yeah probably love to have him. Considering hicks you know Is been injured. They've been running out guys like brett gardner and stuff like that so they have a they have a history of trading their pirates pirates yankees now organizationally not necessarily what this pirates for an office that we started on. Oh yeah that's right. That's right this past offseason so i don't know maybe there's something there but If reynolds or frazier got out of there. I think their stock obviously goes up. Because they're they're run scoring runs driven in has a great chance to improve. So i just wanted to shine a light on reynolds man. He's been a top ten outfielder. Where do you think he finishes the in terms of outfield. Probably talk thirty thirty okay. Let's say top twenty. Five was the range i was going to ask. You can hold. I think so too i think so too. I think he. I think the power is going to taper down a little bit but for the most part i think he's i think he's legit and i. I've been enjoying what he's been doing. Switch hitting and killing it. So shouts out to brian reynolds. Let's play a little holder. Fold here before we get out and let's talk about our excuse me or skipping hollander. Fold this week or this this episode to talk our free agent pickups that we keyed in on this week and i'll start with mine and i was big on gavin sheets man. I ended up over paying a little bit. Because i really wanted to ensure i got him and you know sometimes when you make a ban on somebody and you end up being way over the next one you can be comforted fronted by looking at the rest of the nfc leagues and seeing. Okay if i been like a bunch of other leagues. I would have needed to go this high in mine. I didn't have to. So i ended up paying what of that. Pay fifty one for him and got. I'm getting the number fifty. One for gavin sheets in the main and the backup was seven but then there were a few leagues. Where i wouldn't have even gotten him for that and then a handful of others with backup bids that were much more in line with that so i just happened to get a little unlucky but i don't regret it i really don't i want to ensure i got him and i'll tell you why i think this guy could be really nice here gavin sheets. Obviously he's got the blood lineage. I i like blood lineage. You know it's not something that. I base my entire team around like the blue jays but i do. I do think it's something that that is notable. But i love the skills that this guy has. He doesn't strike out a lot for somebody with such power now for the most part it's been raw power. They call it five o'clock power. The the batting practice he can crush it. He starting to bring it in the game. Power though a one eighty ice oh and aaa this year off to a really fast. Start in the majors with a three sixty i so i don't expect that to continue. But what i like is because he makes so much contact even if the power is fully there and he does maybe round out to somewhere in the the one seventy to one ninety eyeso- range it could be with a good batting average and in a great lineup in chicago. And they've only been putting him in in the to spot a bunch like they're already entrusting him to a pretty high but now moncada's back so he's going to. He's going to dip back down with moncada's injury but i liked that they entrusted him with that for a weekend. Set will probably end up adding their six especially with grondahl injury. Now or maybe fourth wise brian goodwin banning fourth. I don't know. But i like gavin sheets man and first base outfield. So we got. We got that infield outfield capability. I felt i feel like he's somebody who can be a contributor to the rest of the year on this white sox team so i went out and got him in a bunch of leagues. Yeah i don't have a problem with it. I think it's more of a short term play. Because like i said i think the white sox will be a team. That's in on a number free agents or or trade candidates but my counter to that would be they have multiple spots to turtle. I don't think it takes sheets out. Sap they got. Brian brian goodwin. It'll be like a rotation of all the guys who've been playing regularly like the sharpie. She's a little bit of sheets. A little bit of brian. Goodwin some billy hamilton. Some ataman goal. You know While they rotate guys in utilize worked as way back re Roberts working his way back as well so they both likely to make it back this year. I think they are. I think eli before robert. But i think they're both doing baseball activities to believe. Now.

"You literally only have to pull in the parking lot, the on the grounds. Boom. Turn on the app. You are validated. You need your head home and you're good to go doing it on your phone right? And stay there and gamble at the beautiful points about sports. I love that. You know what? You know what we call that in this country. Convenience. Phenomenal. Phenomenal Anyway. Time for shot. No shot here is Tyler. Alright? So, Jeremy five Morning, Tyler. Are anybody good? Good. So Jeremy Fowler put everything good over there. Everything is good. Early start for. I understand. I know. So Jeremy Fowler put out an article about the top 10 trade candidates being players that could be shipped out. This off season, and two of them were bears Nick Foles and Akeem Hicks shot or no shot. Both of those guys are on the roster for week one Akeem Hicks and Nick Foles. Yeah, Like I was saying, I don't understand Why Nick Foles. You've got to make a deal here. He doesn't need to be here. He should be a backup someplace else. You don't. You don't have to starters, maybe three on the same roster anymore. In 2021. Mhm. Man. I'll say shot. That they they both will be on the roster because maybe it'll be something that happens in the season where he's moved. Yeah, he until they can figure something out. It costs you more to move him than it does to get rid of him. There's not a savings there because the way they had to structure the deal to get him to come off all the money he had in Jacksonville. So I fully believe that they would love to move. Nick Foles. They are trying actively to move Nick Foles. But unless they can get like the Jets, who need a backup to bite Not a lot of teams out there that are going to take on that contract. So Akeem Hicks will be here. They're trying to win. Nick Foles. That's a different story. It's a good question, though. Very good, Tyler. All right, Next up, Brian. Hey, Is it kind of hit on it a little bit earlier with Jesse, but Brian Hayes, Mr Base at first. And Bobby Witt Jr also missed home plates all in the same night. So I ask you is missing a base the most embarrassing flub you can have in a baseball game. I will say no shot. I just think that When you're when you have an easy ground ball as an infielder, that's tough, or if you are now fielding the ball hits off your head, Jose Canseco that one's embarrassing Rizzo the other day dropped the pop up that hit him right in the chest. Kicked his leg out. For what some odd reason I don't know what happened on that. Lost it in the sun is what happened on that pop up. I'm going to ask him that Friday night game, right? Uh, it was a night game. They? Yeah. So he lost in the sun. Yeah, exactly. The high sky in San Diego. What happened? I would maintain what happened to will Craig, when heavy bias is running as the most embarrassing thing that can happen to a baseball player. Agree what I want in Pittsburgh. Oh, happy by is he chased him to home plate. You think that's worse than missing a base? Absolutely. 100% home Run. Yes, yes. What, Craig? Well, Craig's thing that you're taught you have to touch all the bases. Yes, but it's happened enough where? Yeah, it's embarrassing. The will Craig thing. He was a freaking gift. And all and all he had to do was touch a base and he wouldn't have even been in that situation. Correct. Keep panicked. We'll give you context. Tyler. One of the biggest home runs hit in the in the sport of baseball. Mark McGwire almost miss first base he did when Dave Mackay went to give him a five. He missed first, He had to go back and touch it. Off of Steve Trachsel. Right? Correct. That was number 62. I believe so Even he almost Mr Bates. I would say these, I would say fielding gaffes. Would be ahead of missing missing a base. Seems like well, of course, we've seen gas more often than missing the base. But I would decide on that. And you think I would go with Mueller? Yeah, definitely. Tyler. Alright, so AK was an instrumental part of the drafting of Nicole Yokich, who won the MVP yesterday. Shot or no shot. You trust a K to have an M v p here in Chicago in the next five years. It's a great question, man. That is a really good one. Um I will say no shot to that. Yeah, I'm going to have to go. No shot to and beads still very young games in his prime. Yokich is in his prime. There's a lot of really, really wonderful pianist to rant. Yeah, are still In their prime. I think it's the five year qualifier that makes me hesitate. 10 years? Yes. Five years, no shot. The M V. The next M v P for the Bulls will be a draft pick. You think so? It's not going to be a disgruntled superstar, because what if Yokich does get disgruntled at some point or what if Dave Lillard ends up here? You think that You wouldn't want to go with the guy who picked him in the first place and trusted him. Has that relationship with him? I like the angle because he does have the internationally influence. Does Art Carney? There's no doubt that he has that right. He does. So, um I'm just going to my gut says my size will Gut says no shot to that. I think that he will bring in international flavor. I think he'll bringing quality players. Remember while AK was with Denver, he was able to build something, but there was a again tough West. Ceiling to the success. It's lucky that the Lakers are out of this thing where Utah or Phoenix has an opportunity to win the West because you don't have the usual in there, right? So I will say no shot to that There's going to be better players..

"Got picked last, so that's how they were viewed. And here is Mitchell in a huge game number one. And he just hitting shot after shot after shot, and it's just beautiful to watch and and There is a a poetry there that The Jazz. Don't need the great player. The Jazz don't need the singular superstar The jazz don't need One guy to do it all, even though he did do it all last night because they are truly a balanced, well rounded team that's properly coached and has a great home court advantage and showed it last night. So watching Mitchell do that, then, after the game, being so unimpressed by his own performance. Just saying, Look, this is game number one. I had to help my team when I was terrible in the first half. I missed a bunch of shots. I wasn't good. Defensively. You know, Mitchell is so accountable. To watch them do this last night was really cool. And then you have Rudy Gobert, The other All Star who on the game tying three point attempt makes the perfect defense to play. He comes over. To the to the corner. And he elevates jumps to try to disorient the shooter or get some type of arm in his face. But as he's coming down, he does not make contact with the shooter. Allowing him a second jump and no free throws and on the actual three point attempt comes up and deflected and blocks it. It is textbook brilliant defensive work and again last night, even though Mitchell goes for 45, which makes some kind of feel like the Alpha It is again the sum of the parts for the jazz. It is everybody contributing, and you have Mitchell, who's still underrated as a star and as a offensive Kind of wizard. Combined with Gobert, whose brilliant defensively and all of the other pieces kind of complementing one another. And it just it works, and it works to a higher level that works to the to the tune of a one seed and a one series lead in this in this matchup against the Clippers. It was a great win by the Jazz last night. Now last night, you just heard Bogush play the last hour. The play by play call from jazz radio where they said it was we We miss your for Rudy. Go bears. Block. I think if I heard this right Iron Eagle last night and T and T said it was the French rejection Playoff of the French connection. Whereas which one do you like better? We we, me, sir. Machine, monsieur, or the French rejection. I'm always partial. I am but I got to go. We we miss Sure, because I like any kind of playing off doing the other language. I'm a big Pepe. Why filters Pepe Le pew, but it's Pepe Lamu fan. Wait a minute. No flip that You thought it was to Belem. You like he was Marios Weird cousin. But it's Pepe Le pew like you. Yeah, that kinda reminds me of the French rejection. A guy like me who probably doesn't know what the French connection is, isn't going to get that It's going to go over his head. I like the French rejection now. Both of them are pretty good. But I I love a Parody upon off of I like all puns, but upon off of a classic movie I'm always going to be all in on bogus which do you prefer? French rejection and they're both clever, But French rejection is a next level of clever and a good breakdown. A good balance out for because he did lay an egg earlier in that game he had He tried to do something off of Vica Zoo boxes that his first name, but his last name is do bots and he did something, and he tried to make a reference. I think might have been like sausage related. I don't know It was a stretch, Brian that one didn't work. But French rejection was a home run. It's a French rejection. The Jazz win game one. You did just out of the sentence. I like all puns. I want you to keep that in mind when you're scoring out Canadian bacon leader. That's true. I guess I don't like all puns. I like the idea of every pond until they're executed in their terrible loser Peg. Little loser pig. Even Hori Matthew Perry did not want to be friends with them. Oh, Wolf. We? Well, we will rock you. Yeah. Yeah, I guess I don't like all parts, Marcia, So wishes the sauce. What's this? This sauce? Mustard? Varlamov, She barley barley, She bang bang. Mhm. Mm. What's this? This sauce Marshall. So wishes the sauce. I made my own shrimp cocktail sauce the other day. You gotta answer. You've got to add words to shear sauce. And I was just saying it like rest. What? This This sense where she's assault was just a little bit of catch up a little bit Tabasco and then just a dash of yourself. What's this? This which is your sauce? Just a sauce. The sauce. Maybe has our headlines this morning, Mr Bogue's where to begin in the playoffs. We begin with my own pun. How about a little shake, rattle and roll in? Lose Adelphia last? Oh, lose Adelphia trying to take him off the dribble right hand drive in the leg. Kick out to the near side shake. Another three is in the air, And that, too, is good. Milk is on fire. His 43 Tom McGuinness, son, Sixers radio chic Milton scoring 14 huge points off the bench in the second half after Philly got zero bench points in the first. Milton helping throw the knockout punch of the Hawks, who kept calling back into Game two, finally losing the 1 18 102 that has Doc Rivers team even at a game apiece. It was big because we lost game one. But we're the one game one that had been made because we we won Game two. You know what I'm saying? I actually don't neither just scary. What is that? Rivers also got 40 points and 13 boards from Joel Embiid. Just 21 points from Trae Young. He missed six of the seven threes he took last night. The Clippers wasting a 14 point lead in Game one and Utah, losing to the Jazz 1, 12 109 Donovan Mitchell scoring 32 of his 45 after halftime. And that Rudy go bare Block and Marcus Morris in the final seconds. Denver to call Yo kid. She's the M V. P for the first time after career highs in points and assists plus 47 regular season wins for his Nuggets. Dodgers ready Walker Buehler seven shutout innings in Pittsburgh last night because pirate key Brian Hayes lost a homer when he missed first base. He was watching the ball go down the right field line. Think you might be in play? We have the hospital second, didn't see his both of his feet, Missed the base on review. He was out Dodgers get the win 53 and that one and cocoa gap is done at the French Open a straight set loss to Barbara critique of a Back to you. All right, thanks very much bugs. You know? Because of the Islanders, surge of the playoffs and upside down Mike's recent celebrity. We have not had to talk too much about Schwartz. But Schwartz has taken this New York Saints thing. So over the top, but I think at some point this morning we do have to address this. Because it's so utterly insane. Ho ho ho, Peter Schwartz, but when we come back, we do have Canadian Bacon, D, a CBS sports radio. Do.
