"We are so delighted to have you on the podcast today. Thank you so much for joining us to get started. Would you just tell us a little bit about your background and how you first became interested in Seo? Absolutely and the pleasure is all mine. So my background is that I'm the VP of Seo Content Ed. G to I'm also entering startups in terms of marketing seo go to market at the German accelerator, which is the official star program the so belly of Germany. And a writer of a newsletter called Tech Bounce, which I home in on marketing strategies and customer acquisition. I I got started in Seo, I think at around sixty years old. I've always been a pretty. You know curious. Kid took apart radios. TV's computers all that kind of stuff to see how it works and I would say have a very unethical an mind so all the debts that me to get started at sixteen when it was playing a lot. Lot of video games, and so it was about the time when brought Internet became really good, and I used to play with friends, online and groups, and so we at some point started to participate in tournaments, but for tournament you needed a website, and it was the guy to figure out how to make a website, so talk myself I'm very scrappy which? Estimated Photoshop and I put together. These horrible bed websites unlikely. There's no evidence around anymore, but at some point, I, asked myself. Where are these people coming from WHO visit our website? And got me started to kind of discover this concept of search of search engines, and that's what came from. That's amazing. What a great story! What an amazing way to discover Seo in I'm curious at this point. You're really one of the leading figures. How did that come about? Yeah, I think they're a couple of factors one of consistency, so I've been in this for over ten years now, but also very lucky to have a great start so. After the teaching myself a little bit of Seo with these sixteen years, it took me a couple of years until basic after college to join a great consultancy that was focused on enterprise clients where I really learned the crafts hands on, and that's a great favor that give me like a you know. A great kick started his career, but also someone who does a lot of trial and error a try out a lot of things I really tried to be practical mind. Just what works and what doesn't and then also have to say that talking and learning from others has been huge even outside of the agency that started in just keeping a broad network and talking to people about how do things what they learned in sharing your lessons as well which was one of the reasons for why start my own blocking us better, that was always very very big for me, and then also touched on the new self so. So just having a block, being out there, speaking and writing and giving back to the in some sense, also really helped to be lucky to be part of that committee, and maybe be at the forefront of it as well, and I'm curious you mentioned trial and error trial and error can really help you be at the forefront of discipline that has emerged within your career span, and that was seo. Can you talk a little bit more about that? Absolutely. So I. If you take a step back, I think that marketing is really a practitioner discipline of course series important. Don't get me wrong, but. Marketing is not a discipline that you can just learn from the books in the be good at it. You have to do it. You have to be practitioner, and especially SEO is very practical, because it changes so quickly, and it's such a black box I mean in essence of the hundreds of ranking factors that Google. Is probably using. We really only know maybe two handful of them for sure and I'm saying that with those that Google has actually confirmed that have come out as a result of many many studies so. The real advances in Seo come from people trying things out and sharing them with the community, because Google is getting so much smarter uses so much machine learning technology, and is so much more able to customize way these ranking factors depending on what she searched for, or what vertical you're in, it becomes even more important to try things out in order to see what works for you in your niche, your vertical for your website, so we're my career. Spend you know I've done. Done lots of experiments from Seo some more you know, like more professional, a bit more on the actually just trial and error side, but then a part of that is also having like self educating by by reading content reading about this experiment, other people are doing that comes back to having this great network, and being able to tap into it, so it basically comes down to being a bit of a black box and just getting more actual practical knowledge for your use case. And you mentioned your role. As the VP OF SEO content g two now and previously. You would let SEO Atlassian. I love to dive into what those strategies were like A. For Atlassian particularly because they had no sales team, so the pressure must have been greater to produce organic leads there. Yeah, that's true. That's does not have an outbound sales team. The customer or user acquisition strategy is product lead. And follows this concept of landon expanse then extended nutshell nutshells very simple is the idea that a product is instead of being sold tops down, so you like sell to a CTO or CMO or on the C. Suite? It is bottoms up as a developer would bring in in a product Jira with us debt, and it's easy to use for the developer because it's. It's free up to a certain number of users project. And then the product would spread from developer to team, and then from team to department from department to a whole company that is the of an expense, and there are other companies that follow very similar approach like dropbox or slack, and at their essence have a collaborative product which makes things much easier, they usually have the freemen strategy so there a very low friction to actually sign up. But then there are also all these other things that feed this kind of product. Let growth loop, so it takes that back. I often think in terms of loops and learnt this from refunds. Gruber on Brian Belt Four. When it comes to to growth right so loop could be again like a land and expand strategy, but then you can stack loops on top of each other. We can combine them. Inorganic is acquisition is another loop that we build at Atlassian in a couple of different ways, so one of those ways have been content micro sites which you can imagine a site in sight type of formats. Around topics like agile or get or autism, and so the whole concept is that you bill, it's kind of a library. Or a single source of truth around a very important topic in your space, and you answer all the questions that people have from the what is to the how to go really deep, and those micro sites scaled to millions of visitors on a monthly basis at Essen. But then we also had a lot of brand campaigns, so that could be even offline things like we advertised on the Times Square, New York City with huge banners `send to just drive that brand forward, and that's resulted in more direct visits from people, but also and more brand searches, and that's really important for us. y'All so if you have a lot of people looking for something like it last in project, management or project management, that's a very strong signal to google it. This particular brands or products is very important for the cure project management for example. We also did a lot of CO marketing, so we partnered with other brands created unified strategies and acids and leverage their audience. Also had a lot of thought leadership content, so at lesson is really at the forefront of Agile Development and did not only speak a lot of conferences about these topics, but also just drop it hole in a shoe that whole topic forward, so just owning topic was really crucial for Aug growth loops and kind of building top of the product that growth, and then I'd love to contrast that with your current role edgy to can we talk a little bit about what the strategy is like there where you're working with so much user generated content. Absolutely, so to Congress lesson is a marketplace instead of SAS company, and so our growth loops work a bit different as in that the more user generated content, we have the better perform in the searchers also google the more reviews gets. That's like the very simple essence or are very basic growth. But then there are other things that are coming on top, so we also have an editorial sites, which is learned to come where we educate. Our audience tried to catch them earlier in the user journey, and then funneled that traffic over to our marketplace so. It, is in essence, a kind of different approach..

"Sports Illustrated SI dot com cover the knickerbockers when he was here is a great basketball guys but on the show now a bunch lately but it seems like we Stephen days out and we split between robin Lundberg and Brian belts out of the boat really really good and of course this is a big story in New York this week the knickerbockers finally firing David fishtail after eight hours then I mean Howard is press conference a couple of weeks ago but the two guys that should get fired president Steve mills and GM Scott Perry those guys have put together a terrible basketball team I don't give you pick UP read our back from the grave he a winning with these guys so they made David but still the sacrificial lamb a couple of days ago which is fine and if you saw my tweet guns he I tweeted I'm glad he's still got fired because now there's no one else to blame but management that's it let's go right out them that's it so right on get the guy from Toronto here fine these clowns are really both clowns mills and dumb and Perry and let's try to fix this thing mix of four nineteen but let's get to walk with the real detail of the story that's why robin Lundberg is you're probably good morning pal how are you how are you doing I'm doing well better than victory that is what everybody's doing but in the next I mean not the typical the state I mean that that is it's just been so embarrassing last night they they show off they lost by one point Randall misses a free throw late but forgetting about last night let's get right to it in my opinion you just heard it it is ridiculous to plain David phased out for any of this when OJ battery or Morris is your best player on your basketball team you don't have a very good basketball team that's about all no doubt about it I mean the roster is just that incredibly fault when the worst I I've seen it in my lifetime watching the NBA I mean they if you're looking at other team Jamie reference Golden State the Golden State is down governor at laughter quite top without Steph curry the is Aldon d'angelo Russell without the district's full strength Marcus Morris would be the third for forward on a good team you know what he was in Boston RG it is still trying to develop it and that's what's scary about the the situation with the Knicks it it's not like this is part of the plan I don't know what the plan is to you have to go back and remember the treated Christos forcing gift for the cap space and then they watched the rant and car Rego to Brooklyn which to me is one of the greatest humbling in in the history of sports and now they they tried to sell this product out on the court and you go all right what what's next what's the the next plan your because it player development hasn't exactly been there forty eight you know the last first round draft pick they signed to a multi year extension with Charlie ward which drafted in nineteen ninety four right it was a really a quarterback at Florida state and was an integral part of those pot body teams and been gone two teams but never a superstar by any stretch of the any stretch of the imagination well they got to do something about the final per se they that this man who coaches this team be but over this now for decades it seems like whether it's Larry brown will bill Jackson right say it time is Mike what's it had one great year that fifty four would team with Carmelo outside of that the coaches come and go because the teams are always bad so one of the next going to address mills in Perry will they get you Jerry from Toronto here for next season what are your something like that and they have to do it this offseason if not before I mean I would do it right now years that you're right in an attempt to preserve their job those guys do something rash at the trade deadline and whatever after the next you have like their traffic going forward so I I think you have to make the move ASAP and it has to be someone who would put in a position of power with full autonomy right because what are the common denominator through all this not being stolen and Steve mills the Knicks have won one play up because I graduated from high school in the thousands and so those are the people that have been there during that entire time so we still Jackson came in it was said that that he had full autonomy and I'm not defending filled tenure but he was asked to retain the milk right so if if it's going to be used here you know and and I can't criticize that you bring in massaging hearing you say you are in charge of basketball here yet full stop that's a good move but beyond that you know it just feels like an underling could become seven matter they're they're about the higher their next former coach you know so that that part of it doesn't exactly matters much electable with real Robert Khan is installed otherwise it'll feel more like your cancer we have that going on for so so long hearing and I don't mean to be like a half in there but that's just the reality that they put in front of it it's hard to give them any better but at that robin Lundberg go Sports Illustrated here yeah you talk about the next coach Mike Miller takes over when I saw that in history I'm not gonna lie idea I got to know the player Mike meadows in Miami for ten years here is a two time champion for the heat yeah yes and play in the NBA for seventeen years I said this is kind of cool I I have forgotten of course at Mike Miller was an assistant coach that us stuck around with Steve mills from years ago is there any chance any chance at all that this guy goes beyond interim coach I doubt it I mean they didn't mean every coach interim coach in in re after all right I doubt it barring like some incredible turnaround like we did talk about that at the top of the technician you know that the roster count up there so there's almost nothing you can do it right he didn't know where to acre because there's nothing you can do to make this a good team you know that they feel like if this team plays to it's absolute perfect vision it would win twenty five you know like there's there's just no way for him to do it and so they're gonna want to install someone either who's on the come up or have a name brand and it looks like to go they look to win the press conference it and I think that's a lot of times it was moved look what happened when they brought in Phil Jackson the same time then that's brought in Sean marks nobody knew who shot marks what but he would like the number two guy in San Antonio like all right let's go get the number two guy from a really weird well run organization and during this time period Marx was able with almost no assets to turn the next into it but younger really they're about to be a juggernaut in their good team right now so I think that the best movie to go higher someone who is is gonna come up you know we might not knowing exactly but he he's the next guy you know say him what about these rumors of the first female lover Becky Hammon yeah that that yeah I mean there's been reports of she's interested to us I mean I I think you if you bring her in it be great if the greatest the woman get opportunity in that role but but again the other moves matters more yeah whether you don't have to be cheery first because otherwise I wouldn't if I would like him to take that job usually when you're taking a bunch of office on your resume in your you're hurting your brand before you even get a chance to get it started if you Jerry come then he's the top dog and you know that then you can start thinking about the coach but it can still be that movies made the move of both the coach the coach is really irrelevant yeah not very popular the firing of paste eleven yelling about it for weeks ever since that press conference we without mills and Perry Stan van Gundy killed the next Gregg Popovich killed the next Steve Kerr killed expect even democratic presidential candidate enjoy Yang took to Twitter two days ago I swear to god he goes David biz Dale is the lucky one the pants are still stuck with this team ten to yeah even here he recorded one of my criticisms about the next so I yeah I know he's done a good job on the menu and you robin robin lumber gear SI dot com Nick's did lose last night they they stated they lost one of four one oh three random is a prefold late but still the results the same poor in nineteen and I will see what happens with the front office and the coaching as well when asked about Carmelo Anthony in Portland opera couple weeks out of but I guess the lebron I saw last night what does this have been going for come all the way at the in Portland does he has he shown here we still lots of game left we pretty well actually I mean look I think time all can help at that age right we we saw with lebron even I obviously don't want anybody really be compared with the price on a different level but Carmelo came a flash I think you came in a little bit humbled and he came in with their was finally a good bit of Kentucky he could play all day make a playoff McCollum and and I think it really comes down to how well you should the three ball to be honest you know defensively he's still lacking any not where he was in his prime but he could re write the last chapter of his career in a nice way if he's productive for them and so far he's been productive for them and ultimately I I think that come down to him knocking down those outside shots and in being a part of the world in the starting lineup and maybe you can get the ball in his hand a little bit more when when she shared game goes to the bench Boston Miami Toronto Philly all playing while inside the Eastern Conference but the Milwaukee Bucks were the best team in the conference last year in the Greek freak really it's always in the playoffs not ready for prime time just yet that may have changed books have not won fourteen straight robin they've won all but three of their twenty three matchups so far this season this team looks better this year than last year do you think maybe this year it'll be a different part team come playoff time I you know I still think they have the same issue in the playoffs but the question is is there a team that can expose them okay really really have problems too like I I think people forgot how big a deal would be for them to lose Jimmy Butler they don't really have a closer you know I saw a program talking about Bentsen if need to shoot the ball more he does the need to need to open it up yes he wants to do she would at least one three every single game yep and and he didn't know he had to be either both really count the players but they're not perfect it so I don't know if we can maybe on the defense event really can but I don't know about the opposite that Boston have a nice group of players what do they have anybody you know the caliber of of Jana no one in Miami the other team that that's interesting to me right now so I think those lost those for me walking I'm just not sure anybody in the east can expose them I think if we bring giant in these who are just some I I really do think at the net I mean I think the nets are going to be if the rank comes back at some semblance of the rant the next is going to be on a level of you know that the championship contenders but right now my Milwaukee I could see one of those teams going back and forth with them in a long series but I I don't know if there is a Toronto because you see Toronto is still so good if you would put quite winter back on them they might repeat at this moment though I don't know of anybody in the east can expose us fall so they might get exposed in the finals against the the Lakers of the clippers one more on the west the Lakers of course like the box twenty and three with James and Davis a best record in the NBA but right now very quietly the two seat in the whites at sixteen and six press repeating the pelicans by nearly fifty last night with a kid that may be the best all around player in the game but no one talks about tantric out in Dallas posing is there too how good are the sixteen and six more Cuban lied Dallas Mavericks I think they're one of the best teams in the league I think there were like the five best teams in the league you know don to choose is a wizard he you know I I I can't be proved to be the first pick in the draft because I I said this kid is over there is eighteen years old the MVP of the euro the you don't realize that the competition is playing against over there is better than college basketball he's a grown man you wrote it's better than the NC double a I didn't expect this quite in you somewhere like he's some sort of cocktail will via the Bron James and James harden a little less athletic than lebron or a lot less athletic them abroad a little or a lot less the actor than harden but he is he is a dynamic player in the pick and roll and they've got a nice bench the attic forcing if we still get in his rhythm they they got a proven coach I've been I think they're one of the five or six that being the basketball right well the great job is always man love having you want thank you for your take on the Knicks and I will.

"Play more. But when when those are like, the best pieces you have around you it's tough when you're Carson Evers. And you know, it's it's one of those things where like by by the end of January. He's going to realize that him shooting with two hands in his face is better than a lot of these guys shooting wide open and not that pretty as bad shooter. There actually have a lot of good shooters. But you get the point that it's going to be one of those things I think where he's just tries to take over. And. Yeah, it's going to be tough. It's all right. But he's good. Both my God. Is he good? Yeah. Eastern Edwards as a back court as far as getting steals getting turnovers. That's good. It was a really good game. It wasn't really really good game. But yeah, let's not a not a certainly not an elite eight game. Do we have anything else before we go? Let's just quickly on the Brian Bowen thing, basically, he we kept teasing that. We didn't talk about Brian belt line is used is from South Carolina where he was he transferred to South Carolina. Now, he's signed with a team in Australia, think ought to play professional basketball. But he is suing them for basically saying that they he will. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You guys ruined my life over nineteen thousand dollars or maybe one hundred thousand or or was it however much organ offered I don't know who knows. But Brian Bowen going back at them and all the people that were named in the original FBI case our own he's seeking basically to have Dita's never be able to sponsor division one sports teams again. So this is going to get tossed out immediately. Yes. It's very very bolt. Let's enter tain it as though it's possible because because like. If there's a if if the case is I I don't know if it's Brian Bowen, say a Dita's ruined my life. I'm like, yes. I would agree that would be really personally damages. Yes. But he's like basically suing the saying, you can't sponsor he's trying to take sponsorship out of into that. I say you have zero chance of getting this done. This thing you get thrown out immediately. But what happens if they go to the supreme court, and then, you know, twenty years kids learning about, you know, and Versi incidental, a amateurism. Yes. Because all the way it's over. Court in Richmond Virginia. On the campus. We will now here. Marta. So let's hold on just for fun because we are responsible. And this is a podcast. It's just not tickets self seriously. What if we entertain the idea that Dita's Brian bone wins? Adidas can't sponsor anything ever again. Then. You're gonna be seen a lot of Adidas stuff. Elsewhere buses Dita's, you know, it'd be funny. If they just actually sent a truck of all the Adidas stuff, you know, like Jay Leon, James harden. They just send a truck of Adidas stuff that was what they just Brian bones house right now, they don't wanna do any legal stuff. But here's a bunch of Jesus settle. Let's settle off the metro. Yeah. While he's doing them. I don't know. It's kind of company like basically, Rick Pitino was doing what is going on his tour around the campuses is where the three stripes isn't didn't Adidas kind of ruin your life. Rick is like, no I ruined my own life. I love Adidas. That was on me. I love Adidas. Yeah. That'd be that'd be awesome. If this. I mean, it would it would suck in the sense that like Nike would then own everything and just they already do they already kind of do them. So it's ever Jay Bilas sponsored by Under Armour new kicks. He showed him on the Malthusian. Yeah. Dude. Have you noticed with Bill is that he's authored? Yeah. Have you know, well, this might tie into it? You want him to wear a NASCAR jumpsuit with all of his different sponsors on it. This might tie into it for real his I was about to say his Instagram activity is like shooting through the roof because he for the longest time he had an Instagram. Like, I did where you just kind of. It's kind of a personal. It's not personal disincentives private. It's just more of like a I'm not trying to like build a career here. I'm just trying to like here's a picture of my dog. Here's some spaghetti. I had last night just letting my family inference normalize type thing she don't really give a shit..
