"brewers" Discussed on The Lead

"So e-e-e-e-no we're here to talk to you today about two things that appear to go hand in hand baseball and beer. Typically a team called the brewers and craft brews in ballparks. But i i have to ask about something. You've been promoting on twitter. Which is your face on a beer can. How did this happen no idea. It's not something that i ever expected would happen. And it's just hilarious just heat cartoon rendition of myself. Also in a suit people point out. I'm not a suit ray. Often but yeah. I just came out of the fact that. I've been reporting on the use of sticky stuff by pitchers i've been reporting on it so long since two thousand eighteen or so that this one baru was like well. This is your story. And let's make a beer can to commemorate it so it's called sticky stuff. Ib by full tilt out of baltimore and yet my pictures on the can. It's ridiculous not just any ip pretty sure. It's a double i. It's very dankin sticky. That's what i told him to make it. I love it. Well the first topic in our agenda today is what has made. The milwaukee brewers pitching staff so nasty but before we get into the. Why can you give us some perspective on. Just how good they've been there either. The best or second best staff in baseball they have so much velocity but they also have really interesting movement and something that you know a pitching development executive from another team. Said that brewers are doing something different over there. But you know one of the ways you really wanna truly Judge someone is is actually by using projections. Projections are trying to strip away. A lot of luck and look at the quality of the players going forward. And those have the the brewers rotation as number one in baseball and the brewers of relief staff as number two. Well let's talk about the brewers starting rotation. Tell us what some of their top guys are doing. And why it's so special. Will they have a real high octane. Starting rotation to it will drip has in mind. He's going out there and he punches him out. Ninety eight mile. An hour gas from brandon woodrow brandon. Woodruff he's amazing. You came out of school. Mississippi state throwing ninety one to ninety two with the really great changeups and now this guy sits ninety six and has an awesome slider to boot to does here via sets up away a chain jefferson. Then you've got corbin burns like a ninety eight mile an hour cutter. That is just ridiculous. Barnes rings them up for. That's nasty right there. That's something he wasn't able to do last year very decisive in what he wants to do. Wow there's nobody else that throws a ninety eight mile an hour cutter the same way. Foreign burns does and the only people who throw anything. That's like it. I think of jacob degrom. He has a ninety four mile an hour slider but he jake. Degrom uses that sparingly. Corbin burns is coming at you with basically like a ninety eight mile an hour slider over and over and over again. It's just it's impossible. That's that's the word i think of is impossible swaying narrative as corbin burns ties. A major league record for consecutive strikeouts. Ten in a row. And then you've got. Freddie peralta not only throws hard but he basically jumps off the mound. There's a called strike. Three victor rask's he's got it goin' freddie peralta. Like goodness four ks already all just coming out of his hand differently. He has some of the best extension in baseball meaning that the ball is released so close to the plate that it jumps off out of his hands and feels like more than the ninety six ninety seven. He's throwing it at swing at a busy struck out number. Eight for ready peralta. All the way back. He was down and account to. And you got these different angles. These different strengths. But all of them are high. Velocity high strikeout guys. That are just in your face from the beginning in terms of a top three i would say maybe the dodgers are the only team that can kind of go toe to toe with them all right. Well the brewers have also been getting a big lift from their bullpen including some guys who a lot of baseball fans might not be very familiar with so tell us a little bit about their relief. Staff yeah you know. Some people might be aware of josh caterer at this point because he's had one of the more dominant runs as a reliever for the last five years But behind him are to really interesting arms that also speak a little bit to d advanced nature of the pitching development. That's going on in milwaukee. They've got this guy. Devon williams who throws what i would refer to as a screwball job swung on and missed out number one and a beauty rotation on that pige. Let's see many like that. He has this crazy high movement. Change the just drops off the table away from him. It looks kind of like a curveball from a left-hander but it comes out of a right-handers snow one two. He strikes out those stockists at it. Williams strikes out the side. It's called the air bender and when you have a pitch that has a nickname you know you're doing something good honestly i've gotten better at it over the years because of doing like playing around with it since i was probably ten so it's something that i've developed so yeah i don't know if i have some weird genetic mutation going on or whatever but you may be practicing of this virtual find this year jay cousins that very few people know about say hello to the big leagues jake. Cousins cousins delivers. He struck him out. There you go. We'll get the bender will slider for strikeout number one. He has some really nasty stuff. I really hard but also has really bendy stuff slider from cousins and another strikeout cousins. Tell you that is mad sinker. And his slider the divergent movement in terms of like thirty forty inches of difference in horizontal movement. So they just go flying in the opposite direction so we just talked about. You know their pitches but when it comes to watching the team play. What's your sense of the pitching staff personality. Do they have the swagger to match their stuff. Oh definitely. I think back on the fact that there's a here's a funny way to describe it but brandon woodruff wants. Hit a homer off clayton kershaw in the playoffs and yes. I'm talking about the starting pitcher his work at the plate. Something that we may not see much of the future that takes degree of confidence to go. Stand up there as a pitcher and take their their a deep like that. I don't think he touched any of the basis. He was flying around. He's got you. That ball was crushed. I think that they've actually. They're a little bit battle-tested this point where they've gone from being the upstart. Oh nobody knows about the brewers to now they're like no no no. We have the best pitching staff in baseball. Probably and we are going to have one of the best records in baseball when it's all said and done and we are no longer just happy to be here like we wanna take this the whole way. So that's what i've seen in the team over the last couple of years. Kind of mature from upstart too legit world series. Contender had only took four consecutive years to make it to the playoffs to take them serious right. Yeah whether an interesting team because the projections always say they're going to be near five hundred team and then away they did it again. Will you also wrote that. None of this happens by accident. So how did the brewers as an organization this happen. It took a dedication to the best data and tech. That's out there. They take this thing on as a wholehearted everybody on deck. We're gonna do everything we can to get the best out of the players that are in our system. They revamp spring training complex. They spent a bunch of money on a sports.

That's going on here but say number two over the weekend. Of course we had our ninth no hitter thrown here in the twenty twenty one season. This one was by. The milwaukee brewers. It was the first no hitter in team history since nineteen eighty seven. It's been since one nia vase on april fifth. Nine thousand nine hundred eighty seven against the orioles but the knife no hitter. This one was a combined. No hitter by corbin burns in josh. Hader gordon burns went to i. Eight innings of the outing. He was at a hundred and fifteen pitches through those eight innings and he came out after the game and said he had to fight to go back out there for the eighth inning. So he knew he probably wasn't going to win the battle going back out for the ninth. But josh hader came in to finish off the no hitter and complete the outy but gordon burns. He was perfect through seven innings and ultimately a walk in the seventh eliminated the perfect game and made it. Of course the ninth no hitter the nine. No hitters is the most in a major league baseball season in the history of baseball topping. Eighteen eighty four for most in a year. Now this is pending the inclusion of the negro leagues statistics. So this could fluctuate not your how many no hitters were thrown during any of these other seasons. Where eight no hitter seven no hitters were thrown to possibly get to that nine or ten mark but the ninth no hitter as of right now certainly a record when it comes to major league baseball during a year again. The first one since nineteen eighty-seven quick math twenty four years ago for the milwaukee brewers the victory in this game also pushed the brewers to a franchise best thirty three games over five hundred and had their magic magic number down to seven so burn. See fantastic it came out and say he came out and said pushing. The pitch count probably wasn't the smartest idea They're really battling towards october. And that's when things are more important than coming out after eight innings was the right move so i'm sure he fought back a little bit in the moment but after hater was able to get outs. Twenty five six and seven. Everything was good for burns and he was happy with the result so burns now on the year. After these eights no hit innings. He improved at ten four on the season. He has eight to five. Era in twenty five starts. He's got one hundred and fifty two pitched two hundred and ten strikeouts in a point. Nine one whip our walks hits per innings pitched he also has a thirty five point four percent strikeout rates which after this start was tied with max scherzer for the lead in baseball. He has a seven point one fan graphs calculated. War wins above replacement and a national league. Best four point nine percent walk rate. Of course this is. The guy who earlier in the year set the major league baseball record for consecutive strikeouts without a walk at fifty eight so corbin burns continues to push his name. That national league cy young conversation and every outing he's been better and better and it certainly fascinating to see if he can continue to push down the stretch here and have his name at the top of the list when it comes to that conversation but i did want to look at some facts and figures from the brewers no hitter. I always liked to dive into some of the history. That's taken place. Some of the numbers basically how it he volved how they were able to get it done. How dominant ultimately was the no hitter itself and born burns had fourteen strikeouts in this outing again. Up in his season total to two hundred and ten he had a career. High one hundred fifteen pitches which they didn't wanna push him they're out for that ninth-inning so But in a year packed with no hitters burns and haters no hitter certainly looks like one of the most dominant and Burns in hater. Bring major league baseball second longest team. No hitter drought to inet. The brewers had played five thousand. Four hundred and seventy three games between the eva's no no against the orioles in eighty seven in the combined. No hitter that. Took place on saturday night. The majors longest no hitter. Drought currently belongs to the cleveland indians. So the cleveland guardians they have not had a no hitter since len barker back in nineteen eighty one. And the brewers again where second on that list and now second place goes to the toronto blue jays. Dave sti- are steeb on september. Second nineteen ninety three one against the indians back in the day. So other brewers my goodness five thousand. Four hundred and seventy three games in between knows ends the second longest drought in major league baseball. Once again this was the ninth no hitter this year which is a major league record. I've talked to you guys about every one of so shout out to baseball for giving me content here to talk about when it comes to no hitters twenty twenty one season but burns ater authored the sixteenth combined no hitter in baseball history and this was the second combined no hitter here in twenty twenty one the cubs earlier this year against the dodgers back. In the month of june through a combined no hitter there were also two combined no hitters back in two thousand and nineteen had happened twice in major league baseball. Once in two thousand nineteen the astros in the angels had combined no knows thrown that year and then in nineteen ninety. You had the braves in orioles do it all the way back in the early ninety s. It was the first time for the indian slash guardians. Now we're going to get to another style with them later. It was the first time in team history that they had suffered at the hands of a combined. No hitter the Indians are getting a lot of practice being on this side of knows but man the first time they had done it for a combined no hitter but speaking of the indians there the first team in major league baseball history to be no hit three times in a single season when you are playing the indians the percentages of you throw a no hitter that day or higher than any other team in the history of major league baseball three times already this sees it they have been no hit and this also doesn't count the seventeen no-hitter that was thrown against them on july seventh by the tampa bay rays so but this number at three and a half for three and seven nights. They've been no hit three nine inning games and one seven inning game this year. The indians in guardians haven't been able to muster up a hit and they're the first team in major league baseball to have that happen to them in one. Season brewers manager. Craig counsel of course was tagged with making the tough decision to take burns out after the eighth inning..

"Still six best. The marlins rangers pirates rockies. Diamondbacks are all worse than they orioles. Ball put together on the road so just unbelievable statistic there but i got one more stat for you here. The number is thirty. Which is the number of blown saves by the philadelphia phillies this year. It's the nine most all time and remember. We got some games left here. So the the orioles at thirty most blown saves in a season is set by the two thousand four rockies at thirty four the two thousand and two brewers are two thousand and two rangers had thirty three and then there's a handful of teams with thirty two and thirty one so the phillies still have some time to potentially set that record but thirty blown saves this year beth's our worst. I don't know which way you wanna put it. Best worst for ninth worst all time in major league baseball man. Just this bullpen in philadelphia. I i can't even talk about it in detail because i'll just get too upset but that'll do it for segment number one here of the see baseball podcast brought to you by the gmc. Podcast network will step aside here now for word from one of our sponsors one of our sisters shows but when we come back we're going to talk about the brewers no hitter the ninth this year setting a record a major league baseball. We're gonna talk all about it when we come back right after this. This is your ultimate for everything. Sports.

No don't <Silence> do that. <Speech_Male> I <Speech_Male> think your best <Speech_Male> your best course <Speech_Male> of action with any <Speech_Male> of those brewers is <Speech_Male> to educate them <Silence> on how to do this <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> and <SpeakerChange> how to pick <Silence> things apart and <Speech_Male> ultimately <Speech_Male> these people are creative <Speech_Male> people right. <Speech_Male> They're going to <Speech_Male> want to. <Speech_Male> They're going <Speech_Male> to be looking for things that you <Speech_Male> don't have any concept <Speech_Male> of and they're <Speech_Male> already thinking about <Speech_Male> different things they're going to small <Speech_Male> hop and be like. Oh my god. <Speech_Male> This would go great with us <Speech_Male> x. y. or z. I've been thinking <Silence> about making one of those <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> you'd be like. Oh yeah absolutely. <Speech_Male> That's exactly what <Speech_Male> it will go great in <Speech_Male> so don't <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> don't assume <Silence> <Advertisement> that <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> what there <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> are looking <Speech_Male> for if <Speech_Male> it isn't in your <Speech_Male> in sort <Speech_Male> of your hop variety <Speech_Male> repertoire. <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> That that <Silence> <Advertisement> you have to <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> somehow <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> drum upper or <Silence> make something. <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> That's <Speech_Male> not there <Speech_Male> yet. Them decide <Speech_Male> that. That's a great <Speech_Male> point. Because i mean <Speech_Male> face it. What's what's <Speech_Male> more fun. Getting <Speech_Male> one getting <Speech_Male> one more screwdriver. <Speech_Male> When <Speech_Male> you've got a big pile of screwdrivers <Speech_Male> are getting a wrench <Speech_Male> that you never had before <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> who i can do different <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> things <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> yup ex <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> exactly right <Speech_Male> new <Speech_Male> toy <Speech_Male> all. Wow this <Speech_Male> would be great <Speech_Male> here there. <Speech_Male> Sometimes when <Speech_Male> you when you start having that <Speech_Male> dialogue and start <Speech_Male> having that discussion <Speech_Male> you can start saying <Speech_Male> things like well. You know what. <Speech_Male> I know you've got that amber <Speech_Male> whatever is <Speech_Male> again that's taproom <Speech_Male> Man <Speech_Male> if you could just <Speech_Male> maybe tweak that <Speech_Male> up a little bit with us little spiciness <Speech_Male> on the back <Speech_Male> end and <Speech_Male> i think that hop <Speech_Male> great in there and people <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> yet man. You're right <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> how how much <Silence> you have <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> <Speech_Male> done sale. Boom <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> then you start having <Speech_Male> dialogue with them <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> on that level <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> as <SpeakerChange> as <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> applies directly <Silence> <Advertisement> to their product. <Silence> <Advertisement> <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Male> You're in like flint. <Silence> If <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> they're <Speech_Male> rubbing hops <Speech_Male> like i said earlier <Silence> and they're like <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> jeff <Silence> <Advertisement> thing smells like mosaic <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> <Silence> up <Speech_Male> because they <Speech_Male> don't understand <Speech_Male> or appreciate <Speech_Male> the <Speech_Male> the nuances <Speech_Male> that are available <Speech_Male> to them. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> They just <SpeakerChange> want <Speech_Male> glitter paint. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> They want <Speech_Male> you know you're <Speech_Male> you're trying to sell <Speech_Male> you. Know artists <Speech_Male> fine <Speech_Male> oils for canvas <Speech_Male> to somebody. All they <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> want is puffy glitter. "In your your hop samples. Ideally their whole cone dried to eight to ten percent moisture content vacuum sealed. All the good stuff. You know that i get twitchy about so you're going to do that. Go into the brew house. Hopefully some hopefully on a non brew day because the air is going to be permeated with the smell of Stewing mall so you want to try to avoid that or go out on the tapper or someplace where you're not gonna have the sensory overload that also includes having them come out to the farm. Don't take them into the harvest. Barn go someplace else Fit because you're going to you want a clean aroma space. Think about like that. Also don't take them into the machine shed where everything smells like diesel fuel. Don't wanna do that. So that's that's the first thing you're gonna do. You want to lay out a clean space. And usually what i what i like to do. Is a large flat surface area How large is as much space as is as reasonable. I've taken up a four by eight sheet of plywood and put it on on saw horses and then covered it in plastic and paper. Because they're also going to be looking at color one doing so in color. It's interesting if you put hops on a green background versus a blue background. It will influence people's perception of what that smells like. You need to go to this degree. When you're down with brewers. I don't know how much do you wanna mess with their mind but i would. I always defaulted to a white background But just because or i would avoid like brown craft. Paper is going to make your house look like shit or put it on something contrast with the hot like blue or purple or something like that That will negate any kind of bias. There also helps with the presentation going to want to have multiple if you can ideally multiple samples of the same variety. They could be from different harvest days. They could be from different. Drying lots it could be from whatever i would say. Only do this if you could offer the brewer. Those hops from that particular subset sample like a lot. You know this lot of cascade versus the slot cascade you've got them separated and bailed that way or whatever great. If you don't then don't do that you're gonna wanna give them multiple samples of the same. You don't wanna give them multiple samples of the same lot because they may say. I like that one not that one. And then what are.

"We're way closer closer than they were yeah mile and just got a break as interrupted even though everyone else listening is. GonNa know right now. The cubs are winning one nothing bottom of the second one out runners on on first and third shore headed double and Bodey knocked him in that's how they scored that run so so Ryan's all hot and sweaty and excited about shorebridge right now is basically what he's saying so if you send a little a little voice got as many home runs. I think as stocks doesn't eat thirty the store at thirty eighty seven. I believe the stock is is thirty thirty five. It's not bad for a part time off because you you know part-time softball player you know they they might as well. They really you really. WanNa do Moose and WANNA do. Moose and Schwarzer stock is is actually usable on defense. Let's start there. He's come on here. Well almost the same lately he's actually. He's actually struggled. He's got what three firs last twenty four two of them were home runs huge huge to run bombs that carried the team through a victory continue any in any case. That's what is happening in the game and would that that's very timeless for this episode very good uh well worth it because it was so getting back to the nats and the cubs right the nats do sit at seven ninety two. O. P. S. for for the team. The cubs dubs at seven eighty five Milwaukee. If you're keeping score at home is at seven sixty five the offense hasn't been what's gotten them through in this streak. It's absolutely bend the pitching the return of some healthy guys getting dacas back he had a broken finger most of the year he missed basically a couple of weeks here is back but he's not healthy he's basically limping around but he's hitting the ball. Milwaukee is getting healthy at the right time. I can't be more excited so let's assume let's assume okay so so you've got what you want for your matchup. If you get the nationals right we should probably talk a little bit about what you would want if it's the brewers in the cubs. Do you WanNa to do that because I mean. That's a very realistic possibility here. You mean cars wildcard single-game yeah because what we're trying to do is and then we'll talk about what scenarios after that yeah yeah so if the brewers and cubs face each other in the wildcard who do you want going. Is it hendricks again. Does it matter which ballpark yet or do you want Kintana China since he's been quite good against the brewers beating a couple of times in big game you know one or the other in that case you know I think it's going to depend on their last starts here and how you know how the game that's right and in the way the rotation place the way this is lining up. Neither of the brewers or the cubs can take a break. I want to be balls to the wall. The rest of the season I think in Tana would be would be a nice match up in that in that case and as far as ballpark. I you know I- brewers are really good at home. They're really good at home. So obviously I gotta pull for again that that being a Wrigley but Wrigley North isn't bad. You know there's a good yeah. That's our big games there before wow wow they they're allowed. Cubs fans I Wrigley North. If if that's what ended up having oh I should look and see what tickets would would cost to that on what day of the week that would be. Oh Yeah you while I'm close enough. I could do it that'd be wild anyway that's. That's something something to think about later so yeah. You'd probably want Kintana as far as Milwaukee goes you know. I honestly think if they end up in a wildcard situation is going to be a bullpen game. I don't know other brewers have as a bullpen game what starters I mean. It's not true yeah. Oh my it's not that bad Atari. Let's let's take a closer look. Oh boy here. We go again Ed. you want me to pick who I want. Who Do I want. I guess if you had to boil it down to one started. Probably Zach Davies is acting is yeah. The truth is they're lining it up. Brandon woodruff pitched two innings the other day. He's GonNa Pitch probably three or four is next start trying to get them three stars before the postseason and if it lines up it might just be too starts and then pitching that Wildcard Game Brennan Woodruff is who I would want to start. That's why it would be a while that's why it would have to bullpen game because he is not stretched out after Oblique injury so brandon woodruff came in thrown gas and absolutely look stellar. So how do you go from something. Would you be uh-huh you. How would you react if it were chase. Anderson I would I would I would get my torches and pitchforks and I would walk with a group of one hundred thousand brewers fans down to Miller Park and we would we would drag David stearns out into the street and yell at him. I mean we aren't GonNa Kill Them. We're too nice for that. We're not going to maim him over definitely. GonNa give them a talking. Craig counsel for that matter. Council and stearns are not no the reason. This team is where their ad is because the council wants trade. I just wanted to hear talk about you. Know How chasing chaste Anderson Joel Madden through John Lester Oh and other years he has and he would have in other years this year I would not no I would not well. It's a lefty against the brewers left-handed heavy lineup although cast in here is back you know obviously Grendel has been awesome from the right side of the plate this year to be honest these homered more from the right side than he had in many many years as a dodger bring Tyler Austin for Milwaukee. Who's been a nice pickup to play first base. Basically yeah it well you need. I don't think you'd want your you'd want Cantata lefty. Yeah I mean that's really that's what I think is would be the best match up there Yeah Hamels and lesser you know the ages is showing. I mean Hamels Hamels was really good early on and then he was out for a little bit that injury and then since he's been back he's just not been as good so that's one way to put it so I you know I mean I mean even if you look at the season stats mean hamels actually has the best. Era of the three I still gotta go can taunt. I think consigliere or Hendrix because if you have to Hendrix although you know you get the lefty with Cantata you save now. Let's assume now that we've kind of discussed it. I I like the brewers his chances in any situation against the cubs with the way the brewers lineup and their bullpen is right now and I know you like your chances. Oh yeah probably launches. I do yeah I do but Milwaukee did take five out of the last seven with the cubs so don't get too cocky yeah well. That was lucky lucky now. You're you're now. The one thing that cubs do have an advantage over Milwaukee and is is is if these teams advanced to the divisional series having three pitchers that you can turn to as is longer starts is an advantage that Milwaukee does not have Brandon Woodruff is going to be limited. Zach Davies has been good. It's fun to watch the BREWERS brewers because they're piecing together two three four ending guys but in a five game series that's going to be trouble so. I don't really love how the brewers match up with the braves dodgers. It would be a blast to see it no matter what but how are your feelings because if you look at it realistically the wildcard is our best chance what's that means the cubs would be facing the dodgers in a five-game set yeah yeah and yeah. I mean now. Let's let's get into that. Let's get let's get. PASA wildcard and let's let's look divisional series layouts here i. I guess I mean we're basically assuming being I that it's going to be dodgers and braves are going to be the two the one in the two seater dodgers braves foresee that being something that if if you take a look at the current standings ninety eight and fifty five for the dodgers ninety four sixty for the braves. It's pretty unlikely that the braves catch the dodgers also pretty unlikely that the nats can catch the braves as their nine and a half. Actually it's impossible. I believe they're all the numbers the nationals in in the division so tha mathematically as possible but I think winning and losing out braves lose out Nassau's went out so yeah. I don't think Israel so basically with that it could mathematically but why don't you go back to Vegas and put some money on house is for you. This is probably GonNa win a fortune. I'm sure he even happened. Yeah Yeah you would. If you got twenty bucks the blow go for it have right so so yeah. It's probably GONNA be dodger. We're GONNA just assumed dodgers for seed braves. Second seed you know and then the central being third seed and then the wild card winner the four seed and and so the only options for the cubs and brewers would be division Asian and wildcard or division or two wildcards one or the other to wildcards. It's one or the other out of the play offs in one game aim which I I kind of prefer for the case of the podcast is not what happened so we're gonNA. Let's say for case of argument either. The cubs are brewers win the division and then the other the team realistically more likely Milwaukee Wins The division now actually it's the other way but but it's you wish well it's more in the cubs hands to win the division then the brewers the brewers would need to wish on they'd have to do scoreboard watching in order for that to come true and and you know both teams control their own own destiny. Let's just put it yes but the cubs have a little more control over winning the division given that six of the nine games. They play the rest of the season against the cardinals who are in the lead in the division. They have no control control over the brewers who have been the hottest team in baseball. You know they've been twelve and two in their last fourteen. Since yellowish went down I think they're eight and two which is impressive but I believe there are seven into onto before he went down as well so anyway. Continue on with your fantasies. Let's say the cubs win. The division braves the five win. The division brewers get one of the wild card spots and win the wild card so that would mean the brewers would match up against the dodgers. The cubs would match up against. I wouldn't mind seeing that I would like to get some revenge on the dodge. Five Games five game series against the braves for the cubs. I you know I at that point. I mean I think we're we're playing with house money. I I mean it's like I if our two teams are in the division series. I'd I'd be very pleased with that at this. It's not where we wanted to be at the beginning of of the season. If you've been listening back to the beginning we both thought these teams were the best in the National League arguably with the dodgers probably a notch above them just a little bit so so it's disappointing that just being happy with divisional series is where we're at but at the same time that would be a lot of fun to sit down and watch a ton none of October basically I would be it would be raves or cubs and dodgers whatever brewers and braves dodgers right. I it yeah now. That's the other way as as a brewers playing the braves which would be on the formerly known as the Milwaukee Braves against the walkie burs would be fun and then the cubs and dodgers of course has been in a Lotta cubs dodgers playoff baseball past few years many of the Games I've been to since I'm in southern California and I most certainly if that ah happens again in the cubs and dodgers play. I'll certainly be going at least one of the Games. you know that would be in the division series and so and dodgers would have home field so you know the first couple of games or at least one of the first two and if it gets to five you know..

"Well to welcome to the new best rivalry in baseball. Hello again ninety miles podcast fans welcome back for another week. It has been an epic week week and all kinds of different ways yeah that's Ryan Ryan is of course here the cubs fan but around anyway I'll there. It's more like I keep you around for for the three brewers fans listen to this podcast but yeah well. It's Kinda Kinda generous of you in the cubs to keep the brewers around right bad it's been it's been quite a week sir. We've got a lot of stuff to cover today. I was actually going to be nice to you but you're already kind of. I'm already Kinda. Get getting on you a little bit right. Is it already already certain your you. You're not irritating. You're tainted no no. No you better not like okay. That's era tatum WANNA jump in. We're trying to do the introduction here anyway. The anyhow holy cow right what a week this has been absolutely crazy. the emotional roller coaster on the brewers side the cubs are having issues but everybody's tied up at the wildcard yeah everybody's four-game back four games back of the stupid cardinals yeah they WanNa talk a little bit about Yep. Both clubs have had some major losses. Obviously Yell Login Biogas so the parallels of these two squads are Kinda continuing There's some good news though for both clubs that we're GonNa talk about as well unfortunately we're GonNa talk about the cardinals because we don't really have a choice. There's fronts but yeah how's your week been. You've been busy. We haven't chatted as much as we usually do. Yeah yeah been a little busy. I was Outta town. I was in Vegas visiting some family family this week for a couple nights and then yeah to spend you know doing what I can hear but yeah you're excused for not watching the padres absolutely demolished you team right well I wouldn't I wouldn't saves demolished. I mean they split annoying. Split shouldn't Abana split but you know yeah you guys got the padres coming up and hopefully you guys split so then then whatever but but yeah well you got the cardinals coming up for seven so yeah that's going to be a whole different topic to the band cooled down ray when the great when they cooled down the cubs the guide them for seven so that's okay when the cubs heat up so it it'll work out fine so I like your optimism well. What else can you what else can you do? I mean I you know as a cubs fan going way way back to you know the eighties and on through there's been many years. I'm saying well there's always next year. I'm saying that in July so I'm not gonNA it wouldn't even be fair to say while there's always next year. Now you know certainly a chance of either so like you know. It's it's I gotta be optimistic. It's I you know no. I just anytime I get frustrated or upset. I just gotTa think back to when they were the lovable losers in there was really no from doing much and I thought you were going to go back to my mental reset episode and realize that you know that's really the way the way to get through it right. Just that nice realization that the cubs just aren't what you thought they were. Wow they you know they're the brewers aren't what I thought they were either right there. which is which is amazing so yeah and of course you know? There's been a lot of adversity for both squads will cover some of that today. I think we should dive in a little. Where do you WANNA start? Should we start with Do you want to start with the big boys. The big losses get that depressing stuff out of the way and then we can get positive as the episode goes. I suppose I suppose so you know well. No Baya's has done for the earlier and I didn't I did not want that I as an opposing fan I always like beating the cubs. The cubs are at their best that also means you don't have any excuses uses it happens but then of course massive news on the brewers side Yelich goes down breaks his kneecap against against Miami and a foul ball of freakish play the super depressing as a brewers fan to watch that happen he was making a strong case for a second. MVP If he carried that team into the postseason with the kind of numbers he was going to put up. I mean he ends the season with forty. Four home runs and thirty steals. He was a clear candidate to be the first fifty fifty thirty man in baseball ever the historical thing something that I don't think everybody thinks about it the same way that I am right now but growing up you know I remember some historic things I remember the molitor hit streak and I remember that finally even though the brewers never really went anywhere when I was growing up even eighty two I was only three years old. I don't remember that well. This would have been something that I could've talked about with my six year old son for years to come. Hey you were watching games with me. When you were six you saw Christian Yelich you know make history and just that bond that you can build over that and it got cut short by freak injury and that's the saddest thing for me is that why won't be able to you know share that experience with me and more importantly Yelich doesn't get to finish an incredible incredible run this year and regardless of what happens with the birds the rest of the way that's the most depressing thing to me and cubs fans and can have some similar feelings with by going down? I wouldn't say by as was on a historic run but if you're going to go make some noise in the postseason this year and create those kinds of memories. What a key element right right well yeah yeah? I mean it's it's I guess you can make that comparison Harrison and you know I mean obviously by as is is. He's certainly a decent year. Yeah Oh for sure though it's not like last year's. MVP candidacy candidacy released really solid season and the reason the reason. I'd say it's not quite like glasses. I think he's he's evolving and sometimes you gotta go through some growing pains or some adjustments he's making so I you know which is going to favor them more so in the long homerun and maybe this year there's some bumps on the way but still a very respectable season nonetheless and it's going to hurt the cubs not have them. It's going to hurt tonight. Have them defensively. He's seen a little bit of that already. you know they're they're yes in that brewers series yeah in the Bruce Series Addison. I I believe through one away that ended up really sticking in the cubs late in that ball. Oh yeah and that's that's always been a thing with Addison Russell. That's why I she said that going way way way back. When I you know it was old thing well when Addison Rosa comes back or is he gonNA play and I said well he should play second base because he has issues throwing sometimes sometimes has throwing issues and you know and maybe just throwing from second base might be a little better fit for him than shortstop when you got hobby by as like him at shortstop shortstop for sure so so I mean obviously that disrupts that you know a bet right? I have a question for you on Addison Russell. Actually I've seen some some people say that he's a borderline gold glove quality defensive player. Would you agree with that statement or not particularly. He's he's he has he definitely has good range range and good feet good with his glove again. The only negative with okay with his fielding is throwing the when he's he's made airs or almost always throwing heirs and and you know but I otherwise no I mean he does. He does have a good range. He gets to a lot of balls so yeah. I I mean I I go glove. I guess you know maybe with the hit being his throwing issues on that on that shirt. I guess I think Gold Glover's. I don't think I think they make the easy plays look or I mean. The hard. Play is look easy in almost automatic and I'd never really really I know Addison Russell is smooth but never got the vibe that he was Gold Glove caliber shortstop lies so much cubs baseball borderline was so maybe like a so he has the ability to be like a top five national league shortstop that kind of level right. There's fifteen teams so he'd be in the top five if he he was there every day that type of thing I mean yeah I think so and I think if he's in their regular at the short the even the throwing issues settle themselves down on a little bit I that could be part of it. He he hasn't been playing shortstop breaking Yup so but but yeah I mean he's going to be missing now. How a little bit he down your third level right well that so that third level it'll shortstop Nico Horner? Yes yeah who I talked about quite a bit and in the spring because he was spring training yes yeah yeah very exciting very exciting player and yeah. It's Nice I guess you know while it's not not a great circumstance but as we talk about you know usually rookies getting a little bit a major league experience is not because of any good news. It's usually because of bad news typically late but you know we did exactly the brewers went have seen cast in hero if Travis Shaw wasn't an absolute. He's a ghost himself. He's not even a shadow of himself. He's barely vapor of himself so yeah yeah U- usually when these rookies come up especially a guy making the jump from Aa. It's not it's Oh yeah either. A society call up situation worse I mean I didn't even think I didn't even think he'd we'd see him. Sir definitely didn't have any. I you know thought that we'd see them this year and even next year. I thought well maybe maybe we'd see him next year but really it's it's. I mean the a year after that is potentially is like rookie year really where he might get qualify that would be you know my guesstimate on that but who you know again. It doesn't you never know and he's done. He's personnel over the winter. Yep I mean he's he all you can play your way in. I mean Kevin here at for the brewers hand eventually travel shot and help anything and he's not helping anything right now either. I don't even WanNa talk about Travis Shaw horder Nice Start Right. He's got you know. Seventeen Plate appearances fifteen at bats always five for fifteen basically three thirty three average age seventy eight Oh. ps a nice start yeah. Obviously it's only verses I mean for coming up and he was of course done for the season..

Now what's going on man. I know tough news with the injury in Milwaukee couple of days ago but certainly the brewers playing great baseball right now Chris. It was an an absolute gut. Punch is what it was and the team was starting to really hit a little bit of a stride and go on that run that obviously you've seen the cardinals go on here in the last six weeks or so people here in Milwaukee been waiting for that run for for all year long seemingly and then Christian Yelich carrying the load for the better part of last two seasons and he ends up going down in a heap but it's ever since then they've won two straight and really it's a strange feeling CRESPI optimism around the team team beforehand and you guys are saying Louis. Tell me a little bit differently because we're just getting used to September baseball here up in in Wisconsin and and getting used to do what playoff baseball is like you have been to the playoffs quite a few times and obviously won a bunch of titles and have a lot more storied history than we do but brewer fans were kind of thinking that this scene was underachieving playoffs weren't great and they wanted more after appearance in the NFL CS now this year after the injury a couple of nights ago. It's been a rallying cry around the city that people are like man and see what happens. There's a lot of good talent on this team and this weekend's going to be a lot of fun. That's how it happens and baseball sometimes some times and I personally bill feel like the cubs out of the three teams in the central in the race right now probably have the most pressure on them of all probably more than the cardinals and and and definitely the brewers I would say I would I would say so absolutely you look at what that roster looks like in the construction that theo APP scene and the other guys have done there in Chicago they they have put so much money financially and honestly.

"It makes sense yeah it does. It makes perfect sense. Look what i'm what i'm getting at is. I'm have emotionally detached myself a little bit <hes> from you know from. I've it's not realistic that the brewers win the division per se but they still could right. I'm not i'm still a fan. I'm not giving up hope. I'm saying you know if they blow it in the seventh inning. I'm not gonna lose my mind anymore. You know it'll be like well. I guess that's is that that's what this year's been all the way along yeah yeah tonight to all right. The truth is probably re-testing texting. You all kinds of nasty stuff if they blow slowed again but that's fine yeah every set by expectations dammit right right all right yeah cubs. I've i've blabber all. I know that's been ridiculous. Well you know the cubs. I think considering some of the injury things which are out of our control. They're they're hanging in there pretty good. I mean the willson contreras. He's he's been out since august fifth now. <hes> you know brandon anamar. Oh now he's out for the year <hes> he's not gonna come back. He had a setback during his recovery and he's he's not coming back this year. <hes> ben zobrist zobrist <hes> they are saying oh expected to return actions september first against the brewers so <hes> september call up ben zobrist <hes> so that'll be interesting to see <hes> you know and then yeah just through through the season has been just different injuries as you know. Kimbro was out for a little bit. He's back bullpen and sad some issues kinzler. <hes> patriots trump was out. He's back although not doing so good i i you you know he's still not pitching great but <hes> but yeah i think given given that i i'm you know i. I think that they're doing all right <hes> so i i'm. I'm still hopeful on on winning the division. It's basically gonna come down to the rest of the season here in particular the games against the cardinals and against the brewers those are i mean that the main i mean seven against it's gonna be fun game. It's gonna get wild. Seven gay is exactly in fact. We've got yeah it's next week is our cupboards preview as a matter of failed so that should be dropping fry. Yeah we do that friday friday on the thirtieth. We'll get that one out before before that <hes> begins <hes> well or might be during ring during that first game. It's a one twenty starts so you know what it might be. One of those ones where you get to listen to the podcast right after the ballgame when you need some more some more more content a little bit more crap talking between ryan and myself yeah and yeah of course you can always come at us on twitter. I'm at brew winning and i've been a little bit out of a a whiny be lately. It's cool different thing too damn tired i._b._m. Yeah well well. I've tweeted some stuff at you here and there and you're not really replying so you must be crabby. Well i get up at nobody cares. Eh wants to hear this but i get up at four thirty in the morning and i get home at five thirty at night. I fall asleep on the couch around eight or nine trying to watch a ballgame. That's monday through thursday the weekends. I should be better but then we're doing stuff. It's just been busy and i've been tired and the brewers have been sucking. Yeah i haven't responded yeah sounds ah a bunch of excuses and then the real reason the app pretty much well you know i just finished on expectation of the cup so i'm still i'm still hopeful. I think there's a lot to to be played. I think i do need to mention though <hes> one sparked unexpected spark which is keeping them keeping them in there is nicholas cast janos <hes> he has been just a beast since joining the cubs available <hes> nigh <hes>. He's got eighty ninety one plate appearances eighty six at bats. He's batting three eighty four. She's got a one point one seven three oh p._s. Since joining the cubs very nice yeah that's just been unbelievable. <hes> so that's that's been fun. He's in be fun to watch the rest of the year and i i hope they the extent him and keep him because he's also got a great attitude looks like a nice fit in there so <hes> you know i yeah ah kind of unexpected didn't know i mean but you know that's a thing sure that's where you can look at the numbers having a pretty good year. He was leading the league in doubles when you picked him up yeah yeah but he wasn't. I mean you know in detroit. <hes> he batted two seventy three seven nine zero p. s. yeah i ed quite a few where a few doubles but <hes> you know decent decent but if you look at his numbers as career numbers you know he spent seven years in detroit trait. He batted two seventy four seventy three. Oh p s. I mean <hes> you know you look at that and you think ok well. That's not bad but yeah. I mean you know. Can this continue you. I don't know but he's he's been. Absolutely you know incredible on the cubs and he's he's said <hes> i he said like he was. He was suffocating in in detroit. I think this being stuck in detroit for seven years <hes> i it's like he's got new life in him now. He's like oh now. I'm on a team. That's competing thing and i think it made a huge and detroit head a little bit of success while he was there much right right. You know if you go back seven years for lander on the squad. I think you know there was a little bit of success earlier on but yeah the last few years have been rough in detroit just to go tit for tat a little bit on that <hes> you want to you know that that was nice edition from theo we talked about how the bruiser trying to catch lightning in a bottle in one of these pitcher jordan lyles might qualify <hes> since coming over he's he's dropped his strikeout-to-walk ratio from pittsburgh at two point seven three to one point seven seven soon averaging less than two walks per nine. That's a big number but most importantly he's. He's you know he's had five starts. He's three and one in those five starts with a two point six seven e._r._a. <hes> he's been exactly what they've needed. Now granted. He's only thrown twenty seven innings things in five stars which means they're only getting about five innings five and a third of them per start but <hes> without those kinds of efforts to spruce squad would be i five games back six games back would be what i'd just be sitting here listening to you talk about the cubs and i would just be complaining and looking at next year mostly lateness. Oh yeah now i. It's been nice to see a couple of guys step up pitch will actually the starting pitching has been pretty decent outside of <hes> a game or two here there lately but <hes> the bullpen sucks. That's that's not getting yeah. Yeah yeah so castanos nice good stuff okay. That's the arrows versus lyles. That's the big discussion today right. Yeah exactly yes <hes> <hes> speaking of which is at <hes> possible to happen <hes> next weekend. What's that lyles versus kosti yeah i betcha. Could let's take a look at the <hes>. Let's take a look at the schedule a little bit further out here. <hes> got anything posted for probables right <hes>. Let's see here yeah. I mean i guess <hes> you know. There's some of the injury things that have gone on in the days off have really thrown off kind of how i try to guess with the brewers are going to do although it's been relatively consistent lately. Let's take a look doody. Yup milwaukee's all like to be determined on the major site yeah. It's very possible that jordan lyles will start against ashikaga. I mean it's <hes> you'd probably want somebody. That's performing quite well to do so last night he pitch so that was a friday night game. Today is saturday sunday. They you go monday tuesday wednesday. The cubs might actually miss them to be honest without okay. Well the yeah i mean. I guess we'll know for sure next. <hes> <hes> friday are on friday when we <hes> record when we get into the yeah we'll we'll be able to dig in a little deeper but just pitched last night. I don't believe that will be the case as for him. Okay well <hes> but it's a guess yeah so i'm you know what are we good on. Expectations are we. I basically i'm i'm roughly the same expectations just slightly humbled mainly because of injuries <hes> but then some mm sparkling home with casinos and you know you had the cubs being the best team in the national league just like the brewers being the best team in the national league well now. I mean th- obviously that's that's given that's out the out the window i i don't know that i was saying that though we we we did say that we thought wins would be watered down a bit in central just because of the strength vision which i think ben true a lot of pointing you so i would say probably that but also i think there's this division has underperformed to our expectations general yeah yeah a little bit. I mean you know i'm looking. Let's see n._f._l. Central averages versus the east <hes> thirteen and thirteen versus west twelve and thirteen and <hes>. I would have expected them to yeah. I would have expected the central to be beating those other divisions. That's where i thought the extra win and they're more come from or to claw right right right. There are more <hes> even there <hes> actually the biggest thing is the home and road. I mean even the whole al central just their their home in rhode records are just you know average average home record for n._f._l. Central teams is thirty six twenty. Seven average road record is twenty six thirty six <hes> and that's the biggest difference than you know out of all all the divisions in the national league <hes> which is which is crazy <hes> such a split there is some yeah the home road split and a lot of that is because the cubs are supposed to be one of the better teams in if the cubs held up their end on the road than the division vision would look much better on the road period yeah. They were very for cincinnati very poor on the road as well though <hes> although i mean they well cincinnati. It just doesn't know what a win by the score boatloads runs and they gotta win over five hundred at home. They're twenty three and thirty six on the road so pittsburgh. This is all that's terrible. Well under five hundred plane a bandbox in you pitch well inside bandbox cincinnati does for some right yeah yeah. They're thirty seven thirty seven to thirty one at home <hes> so okay <hes> but yeah the cubs forty four twenty and twenty five thirty nine. I mean that's a big big split. <hes> saint louis is a little more <hes> reasonable. They're just thirty one thirty four on the road <hes> thirty eight twenty four at home <hes> but <hes> yeah that that's you know so that's kind of one one thing but i do think you know i mean versus a central <hes> teams higher up are above five hundred versus central. <hes> teams lower are are under five hundred. I mean that averages bridges versus central average of all the teams in the central is twenty eight twenty eight. You know which you know which is normal yeah. Yeah i mean that makes accents yeah but we were expecting the central across the board to be better. Which is where our expectations have been reset again. <hes> yeah you asked at at the beginning of this <hes>. If there was anything else i wanted to added to add to the reset concepts. Just this like i'm a pretty passionate fan. So are you but sometimes <hes> you know you just gotta be able to take that step back and find the next thing to watch for right <hes> i was really getting upset on a a regular basis not like it wasn't affecting my day to day living okay but you know getting upset like that isn't good for you anyway and i just i've found something new to watch for these young and guys what is next year's team going to look like and in the meantime milwaukee's not out of this. There's a lot of cool pieces to watch for and see how they perform. In a pennant senate race these young guys that are up right now and they're playing and pitching in heated heavy pennant race type stuff is gonna be very valuable down the road for this club because this club does rely on its young young players. It's not a big market team so that's something i look forward to watching for the rest of the year and seeing how it pans out because i wasn't expecting a bunch of young guys to be pitching ching and hitting on this club this season kevin here is about the only thing i expected and the way it's gone. We've got a bunch of guys that are inexperienced playing right now so it's kind of cool in a way that it was very beautiful. Yeah thank you yeah. I know i'm rambling on i had to do i didn't know what to do well. Let's let's do predictions now and then yeah. Let's do it right now that that oh you brewers fans listening you know all shed some tears during your monologue bear okay it was terrible i know but that's what i had take a break down a different way and i. I think it's totally reasonable. It is very reasonable still leaves room to be excited and it's reasonable. Yes i've got a prediction. I guess let's cue either working with a song i oh yeah we yeah song which <hes> yeah okay. Let's hear it is whom.

"Well to welcome to the new best rivalry in baseball. Hello again baseball fans. Welcome back to the ninety miles podcast ninety miles from miller park to wrigley field. We talk nothing but cubs versus brewers and how much we hate the cardinals. That's a pretty common theme these days i think when she say so ri- yeah that's a very very common ryan's the cubs fan so yes sir half a game back. You're awfully chipper for <hes> the brewers being three and a half back well. I've i've i've kind of reset some things li and i'm i'm in a really good head space well. That's that's good. That's good because the drugs help a lot. The right i mean in the end it doesn't have the podcast if if <hes> you know you get too upset about the brewers and and <hes> disappear here i had a <hes>. I had a rough week. I wasn't very chipper on twitter. I wasn't very friendly pretty quiet too. I think to your favorite cub cub fan out there. That's always on my case about everything. That's good really apologies. Just more of like i just did not have the energy to keep fighting it right now. <hes> the brewers had a tough road trip. They went to and four could have been worse. It could have been much worse <hes> but yeah that was depressing. <hes> and i've been working long hours like i had a total life changing engine job change and it's actually really awesome but <hes> that's why i'm in a good mood today. We're recording on a saturday. Normally we do it on a friday a little shift there so maybe that's part of it a to get some sleep that helps yeah. You sound pretty chipper for a guy that <hes> represents the cubs who are behind the cardinals. I'm not happy about that i but i i'm not unhappy about the cubs in some ways in some ways i mean there's i feel like there's still definitely hope there whereas you on the other hand may may not feel so much hope got a i got hope is a different thing. It's a very powerful thing and <hes> my hope is different now. It's not what it was say. If we went back to you know when we were predicting preseason rate we started this show in february and we really are thankful. You're here in listening and we hope you're enjoying it and hanging with us the whole season listen and brewers fans toughen it out with me a he. I feel your pain but <hes> at the beginning of the season. I think it was episode six or so we started making some predictions on and what we thought was going to happen and i have you know i've come to the point where i have to admit to myself that those expectations can't can't be met and it's not because of anything well. Do you wanna play that now. Let's piggyback we were we thought okay. Let's let's take a look at our expectations now and let's look back. We we thought we would jump back an older. We found a little bit a little clip. I've been episode six. This is for march twentieth and we talked briefly about some expectations we have about our teams <hes> obviously more on the optimistic optimistic side and and we had every reason to be cloud of yours we had the two best teams in the national league last year outside of the dodgers dodgers arguably certainly the best regular season teams well here. Let's play the clip and then <hes> let's <hes>. Let's talk about it so here. We go okay okay. We'll have winning the division. I think it's pretty obvious everybody knows well of course of course the cubs and of course i have the brewers because we're a little bit homers but i actually believe this is the burs division to lose yeah. Yeah okay so so well you. You should know about canabal. All this is mar. We recorded this march twentieth and it was march. Well look that march twenty nine th right march twenty ninth i believe is when it was announced that he was going to opt for tommy john's so it was it was a i did not know about can able at the time. I said you know he's division to lose and i'll give you that's that's fair because that's that was a big blow and and certainly turned out to be. I know obviously initially i think you you felt josh hader and and you know awesome others could carry the weight there right but <hes> yeah well canadian hater i if you look at how the brewers finished last season they had a lights out bullpen and that's why they made had such a strong push were good powell year. They were absolutely lights out <hes> yeah so losing corey nabl as you know. He had some struggles last year but he worked through them. <hes> came back around and was very very effective in the second half of that season in fact <hes> if i'm looking at it correctly right now. Where is his war from last year. <hes> wins above replacement his career. War is four point three i think last year is when he earned a kind of a majority jordy of that <hes>. I'm not seeing it right in front of me at the moment but with corey can able on the back end of this bullpen you've got i would say probably two or three more wins for the brewers. I think that's fairly safe to say that there are three and a half games back right now right so there's one blow and it's one one that they had time to try and address but by the time you're talking end of march. That's not a lot of time to address it because the free agency period for the most part part has been taken up. It's done guys have already pitchers and catchers reported the seasons basically underway so there's not a lot of dudes left on the street read that are capable of performing at a level of cork able. Was that really seals up the back into your bullpen yeah. They couldn't address it and failed to address it properly at the trade deadline. I'm not sure are they could <hes> go ahead. You had something to say there. I just i just love could able and it looks like every two thousand seventeen was was he got three point seven that would be as best year yeah and then he got point three and eighteen he he did have a three point. Five eighty are a eighteen so there were some struggles there <hes> <hes> change the whole bullpen. Yeah yeah change belt bullpen. I think what he did was. He put josh hater in ideal position. <hes> <hes> yes in the bullpen so his usage was more effective than than they're able to do this year. <hes> you know with higher higher seer zere quote you know having to close and you know different different usage yeah yeah. It's an air leverage still i. There's nothing wrong with josh hater. He's having some struggles but i think the last time i looked era is still three point zero two for the season so he has he struggled lately. Yes is this the worst year career it is right so there's another reason yeah it is so far and i'm not denying that but it's also like it's not he hasn't been. He hasn't been as horrible horrible as everybody's making him out to be. It's just been what you would probably consider a slump of her. A hitter <hes> were at with josh hater okay <hes> but what i had to do mentally let's go back to the beginning as those were our expectations for the cubs and it's the brewers division to lose is what he said yeah and they've they've done a really bang-up job of finding all kinds of fresh ways to run themselves out of arms. It's <hes> it's crazy not not including injuries as we just talked about which obviously was a piece of it but certainly the injuries yeah. It's more than just injuries though certainly certainly yes yeah but yeah we your fans you follow every day. You pretty much know what's going on. If you're a cubs fan look if you really wanted look at how this you know this rotation and things looked <hes> coming into the season basically seven out of the thirteen arms. Something's is gone terribly wrong with and if you count <hes> jimmy nelson from a couple years ago is eight hundred thirteen arms. You're trying to replace a lot of arms now. The starting pitching actually actually hasn't been all that bad lately jordan lyles last night had a six hitter or i'm sorry a no hitter through six innings. He got nailed but the burden of beating the diamondbacks to three and a half games aims out. It's not the end of the world. Would i've mentally done through the week. Though is i've had to admit that expecting this team to be a the top of the division right now in the world series in probably a bit unrealistic burs fans have probably already admitted this. What i'm doing is a mentally mentally cleansing and looking at this from a fresh perspective. Let's see what these guys have. There's a lot of young players on this team that are stepping up. You got your cast in. Here's your trent gresham's on the offensive offensive side of the ball. You've got adrian hauser pitching and pitching quite well mind you <hes> somebody that's fresh to keep an eye on and then you think about the guys that'll be coming back can table. You know who knows what it'll be next year. Brent suter was a three or four man in the rotation last year. When he went down he was the left-hander before wade miley. Kinda got things things rolling <hes> well. Miley kinda came back a little sooner than that my point is this instead of getting really pissed off all the time hi blowing seventh eighth and ninth inning leads and losing these games in heartbreaking fashion what i'm resetting myself to do and my expectations is to let's wreck. Somebody else's season. Let's wreck the cubs and the cardinals and you know what those two teams if you can wreck those teams you're putting yourself right back in the division race is and rape back into the wild card race and it'll be fun if it doesn't happen. I don't have the expectation that this is the best team in the division right now because they don't have they don't have arms. They don't have the horses <hes> the offensive side of the ball. You know there's benson's droughts at times when they hit they hit really well and they can't pitch when they pitch they can't hit it's been it's been that kind of year. Where what can go wrong has gone wrong will go wrong. It has been their division to lose and they found several the creative ways to do a corbin burns's in aa and who knows what happened. It's it's baffling. <hes> brandon woodruff is now set to come back in mid-september. That was an an all star. He was going to be the horse carrying this team. He was going to be the six seven inning starter. Yeah this bullpen as fresh as possible. He's gone <hes>. She's seen wasn't what he was last year. Did she seen overperform last year sure but you didn't expect to lose him in lose the innings that he could do this. You're too. It's just that it's been a crap show and <hes> and i've i've rambled on probably long enough but i've reset my expectations for this team in a way that i'm enjoying looking at it for this year's future which is exciting. It's still wild card race..

"For the brewers and the last year basically didn't have a job as a fastball high and tight and that's ball four. To Cameron maiden. With one. Comes a base runner. And here is Donovan Solano. Solano came on as a runner for Joe panic in the sixth inning. This is his first plate appearance. Panik had a single and a double two for four with a run batted in. Giants thirteen Cleveland nothing here in the seventh. Oakland ended up hitting three home runs in that game. Is it dry fouled on the right deal? I no sooner had. The Mariners taken that five to two lead. Then. Chris Davis had a two run home in the man who lead the majors in home runs last year with forty eight. Hit a two run home run and it was five to four. But then the Mariners started pulling away little bit. They gotta run in the fourth to make it six to four and then. They got three more runs in the fifth inning, including a home run by Tim Beckham Beckham who had previously been with the Baltimore Orioles in the American League had a three hit game, including that home run. Now a fastball inside to Solano. One ball one strike. Oakland. Hit another home run later in that ball game with a couple of men on to make it nine two seven. And that was the final score. A lot of action and five home runs were hit in that game. Now a slider and that's off the inside to and one to salon Allen rather Henry on deck. The pitcher's.

"Maybe I saw it a little bit clear at the time. Your story about not trying to do it. All those other guys with guns tons of power. It reminds me of running. I was recounting the story of when I was a freshman. I remember the first day of conditioning coaches. Ron You to see who did the work. And who's in shape and all that stuff and my dad is a runner and when I was growing up anytime we would run. I never loved running. I also asthma's a kids. It was like kind of like would kill me but when I would run one of the things he would always impart on me was to pace yourself which is a really hard thing to learn especially when you're running against other people so obviously you know. Starting this run the whole team all twenty five or thirty of us on this line are coaches. You know. He's got his hand up in the air. He's ready to blow the whistle. You know finish in a good time. He's GonNa think we're lazy and we're off to a bad start for the year and so all of us are like on this line where tents were ready and nervous and you just want ever everyone just wants to sprint off and I wanted to sprint off. And then I remembered him like no. This is a longer range than that. You can't just run. Your heart is in the first hundred meters like a lot of these guys are going to. Because what's going to happen. They'RE GONNA they're gonNA peel off. They're going to start fading and they're going to end up going slower than if they pace themselves from the beginning and so I learned over time like I don't have to be the fastest one off the block. I can just star running my race from the beginning and that to me. It just reminds me a lot of like what you said like. You weren't going to let those guys change what you do and you saw firsthand that you're gonNA run your own race and not take off and try to do what they're doing because that's not necessarily good for you and that's that's a great point right there and that's that's what it's all about like knowing yourself that analogy is it's it's gold. It really is gold. I pulled it from. I have a couple of piles of you're my desk. That was from the gold pile so I mean nothing but the best. Yeah the last thing I'd say go to go to pro ball and my roommate is none other than Nixon's L. So I'm like I wanted to say to him like dude. You got the right room. You know they just took you in the second. Pick overall on thirty six rounder. They're putting me and you together but I mean he. He ended up being a kid and like teaching me a lot about the game. You know talk about talk about being having a good perspective. This kid just got paid a lot of money to play baseball. But he didn't see like so I mean I just from being around him through a month before he moved Abe was was a cool experience a- as well. So once you're done with your pro-career tell me about the transition out. Because that's hard fairlon because you grew up in a clubhouse baseball was everything and then suddenly it was over so was scouting always a thing that was in your mind like what were your options. What did you feel like was next for you when you're sort of out there on that rafts like trying to find your new direction? Yeah Scowling something I had always thought about but I never immersed myself in the thought of it so when I got released they basically said to me. I Hate Thai the reds said. I want to keep your around like we. We like it. You know everybody in the work you know you have relationship with people you know like so basically. When I got released they retained me. I was essentially a coach and as I was approaching rookie ball. I was coaching kids. That was at extended spring training with essentially as well as the new draft kids and I did that for about two months and that was not something I really wanted to do because my because like I I wanted to play baseball you know like that's one thing I wanted to do. But my dad said. Hey Kai where do you think you're going with this? I said that I mean I love this. I Love I love plan. You know this is what it's about but at the time they weren't you know be big. Leaguer as an infielder you need to be invested in and not necessarily money. But at that and I didn't feel like I was getting that investment. So he's like why don't you do this? Trust me on this buddy so I took the opportunity instead of going home. That summer I was in Arizona and the heat working with the Arizona reds. And you know that was a unique experience because The head coach was Jose Neves. The hitting coach was Lenny Harris and I was just another coach on the staff. Just trying to learn from them and they gave me Some wiggle room to kind of pick up on stuff and teach and learn and not to mention the coordinators that would come in like Miguel Cairo and Barry Larkin and I was able to learn from them. So that's summer. It was hard to do because I was. My heart was still in playing the game but it was. It made a lot of sense now looking back from the knowledge. I gained so fast forward those to summer. That's what I did right. After I played I get a call in August. And the brewers called me and said Hey. Would you be interested in scouting? I said? Yeah so long story. Short I interviewed and interview is not difficult for me because I was just talking baseball the whole time. Kinda like mean. You're talking baseball right now. So I I wasn't like really nervous. I was twenty three years old. Twenty four whatever. It was at the time I I've been talking baseball with my dad since I was ten years old on car rides home from game so it was easy for me to kind of to that. Devasta- were named enough for me to give a young guy a shot it unique to say the least to get going in like we mentioned. Zac. Clarke Clarke was kind of the first kind of guy that Kinda you know. Talk to me about it. All and his experience and kind of take me under his wing in per se. So that's kind of how I got into. I had I had no scouting experience other than being around the game and going into recruiting events with my dad which actually probably is the most tangible scouting experience. You could possibly have but yeah. That's that's Kinda how I segue into all of this so you're scouting amateurs now and you have New Jersey all the way up to Maine correct. Yep So is there like A. I mean I'm sure it's one of those jobs where they expect obviously did expect you come up with a lot of knowledge of the game in a lot of you know as a player you can evaluate talent like we do it every day whether you're playing or or or watching but what's the What's the big takeaways from your first year scouting because I know in conversations with Zach like hugest learning so much and I know you guys? I'm sure bouncing tons of stuff off each other but it seems like it's a. It's probably hard to know what your club expects a view number one and then. I think probably today more than any day in history is probably harder to be scout because there's so much data there's so many new ideas about analytics every teams using them in a different way And we won't really get into what the brewers are necessarily looking for. But how do you navigate writing a report? That's kind of based on feel and like your impressions because like you said Joe Panic. There's things you WANNA put on paper with a guy like him or with a guy like you like this guy is a ball player. He can help you win games. He can do intangible things that don't necessarily show up on track man right button there still value in that assume. So how do you tell me about like what your process has become now as as an amateur scout? Yeah I mean. The funny thing is like as you mentioned. The first time I got into the thing I learned. Was these guys travel. But that was from being at Saint. John's and looking at the San working alongside the same scouts. Now like that kind of perspective change for me was. I didn't realize what not I had an idea of what they did. But the depth of what they were doing you know they were always kind of place to place seeing stuff like that as far as my process. Everyone's is different for me. I try to never forget how hard this game is because I think a lot of times as scouts the easy thing to do is like this guy is not very good you know. He's not he's not going to have what it takes to play in the big leagues and the odds are if we take that mentality. We're going to be right more than we're all the one thing. I try to challenge myself as like what do I see in this guy? Why why do I like him kind of? Think of it that way just because to get to the big leagues is hard enough yes. I'm still very stern with the player. And what I see but I try not to cross them off right away just based on. What's the one thing I learned is being around? The game is like you never know who could pitch big lease Zach. Clark coin a you know like Zach Clark was probably tougher than everybody else. I never saw that Clark pitch but he will there's to be a major leaguer like that you have to have a high level of belief in yourself and was a lot of times if we don't know these kids we will know that and. I think there's so much good information out there on track man. All this stuff is great. Because we're able to get the pitch types and tours and make up stuff from a raw standpoint. We're able to get the accuracy of that better but we don't aren't able to get is unless as scouts and this is one thing I'd this is. The most passionate part of my job is to get to know the kid get to see their fibers. Get get into their fibers. Because that's what makes it different and I keep going back to Zach Clark because I talk about his story all the time. Is that stories. Incredible to me because if you what I learned is you come across a kid like that. That's a kid you want to give a shot. If the abilities there because at some point the abilities are all going to be somewhat in the same cool so what separates. Everybody else is their belief in themselves with fortitude their willingness to to get better their love for the game. That's what the that love for. The game is going to take you take any given person higher than everybody else so for me as a scout those are some things. I'm still looking at and one thing that didn't make sense to me now. A lot of times and you could speak to. This is a lot of times coaches will be or scouts will be. Hey it's about being a like. Is this kid a good kid? He's when people ask that to you and your on that amateur sign you're playing. You necessarily don't really understand that. And now I understand more because being a good person treating people right in this camp. That's another way that two separate yourself you know nobody like those one percent or zero zero point one percent of guys like my just weighed more talented than everybody else for my also get personal..

"And it's turned out to be one of the best deals or most. It was one of the better under the radar deals at Stearns mate. And then you also have Jimmy Nelson returning from injury in whether to be seen if you can return in the bullpen or rotation or if he could even return one hundred percent healthy, and there's optimism from him in separate. He's going to be able to do. So it would not shock me. If the brewers just so they can possibly maximize as window of contention looked to bring in Wade Miley. If the market is not satisfactory to what he's seeking. And that would not shock me considering the that he ended up having to settle for a minor league deal last year. And there could be some teams at believed that his last year was a fluke. I'm not saying that was because his he was one of the more surprising arms last year for the brewers in considering how effective it was. He added he added some pitches in the added some different little tweaks to it that really allowed him to be effective. So as the birds are able to bring him back. I think that'd be a huge victory in their in their back pocket, but I don't necessarily think that is the most necessary move considering that all works out. And it's a big if considering how many pieces are with as I said before with Woodruff. Peralta burns and Nelson. If they can I'll return and be productive starters at in good shape. Yeah. And in a time to where everybody seems to be misreading their market, whether it'd be Mike miss dacas last year or Manny Machado, trying to basically blow himself up and think that he's worth three hundred fifty million. And now it's gonna wind up being around broadly to fifty to eighty I wouldn't be surprised if Wade Miley signs for Tepe, you know, and why wouldn't you come back to a place that you had success? Yeah. And I think he would love it. I believe they mutual interest between both sides, and the only thing that I can see possibly, and I'm Amador disc-. I'm gonna put a huge disclaimer on this possibly see keeping mile out of Milwaukee would be the fact that they changed pitching coaches and with Johnson going to Cincinnati as mentioned before and having Chris hook comeback because both with Miley Johnson, those get along very well. L, and he is widely credited for revitalizing revamping mile his career. So I could see that possibly being a reason. But I think for the most part with the amount of the roster. That's returning in how well that he's fit with his team either way my comeback here in a heartbeat. So give me one name in this Burs system, pitching wise that you're excited about oh gosh. That's the thing is they really at this point. Besides the young guys that with with Corbin burns with Peralta and Woodrow, I don't think they have anyone that has a decent shot of making an impact this year. But if I had to go with one arm it would end up being a guy like Zac Brown. And he is a guy that is similar in some aspects to Corbin Bernsen, I know those to talk quite a bit and they're pretty friendly. But Zac Brown is a guy that they are very very very high on. He's got a really good fastball and above average curveball as well. And I believe the cubs drafted him in the thirty eighth round last year. And he was just a guy that continue to get better. And the Bruce ended up giving him a bottle four hundred thousand dollars signing bonus after the twenty sixteen draft. And he is a guy that is is continuing to develop is getting better. I don't know necessarily whether or not us going to make an impact this year..

"A pure left handed hitter. He's read there with one of the he's he's right? There is a third baseman in terms of ofensive ability. He strikes out a little bit too much for some people's liking. But for for the most parties is one of the more solid third basement. And and I'm sure as a Red Sox fan, you're not exactly thrilled with that trade. But yeah, early worked out for the brewers definitely not thrilled especially with production or lack thereof from Tyler thornburg, health and otherwise. Yeah. Exactly thornburgh. I'm he he should be back. This you shouldn't. Yeah. They actually just resign him to to actually cheap deal. So that's pretty exciting that we finally get to see him pitch for more than twenty games. No doubt. Yeah. He's going to end up being a decent piece for him. If he can stay healthy. So help me out with Orlando arsia kinda give me the profile and him and what to expect from him. Yeah. So I'm going to start off at his defense because I think when you talk more Landau arsia that's exactly where you need to start. And his defense is probably I would say at this point of his career top five in baseball. He is an elite defender by every definition of the word. There's some place that he can pull off that are just ridiculously good. It was just as often. So it was holding them back from really taking that next step. And then you got to see it all started in Chicago for game one sixty three of the regular season when his office of game really took on a whole life. And he was he started driving the ball. He was hitting balls into gaps. He was his early in the season. He was a guy that he he would swing and you would ask yourself. What is he doing? And then. By the end of the year. He looked like he belonged at the plate. And I'm curious to see if he can make that I'm curious to see if you can bring that over for next year considering that they just got a new hitting coach went from Darnell Coles to Andy Hanes Hanes from the Chicago Cubs. So I'm curious to see if he can if he can bring that over. I'm not exactly the most often mystic, but he showed enough late in the season. That makes you wonder if it was sustainable, and you have the ability with him to be kind of patient because you still have him under control. I mean through our let's say till twenty twenty two so faces something you're allowed to have with him, especially when you have guys around and probably not going to be coming up as fast. I mean, you you probably won't see Bryce terrain until twenty twenty two which is X of the year that he that are finally gets out of our. But there's pieces around him and having the pop around him should protect him in. Allow him to hit better in this line of next year. I would think I would think so too. And the most thing I wanted to mention as well with Travis shots transition. A second base was Orlando CIA's defense in his range at shortstop made travel. Shaw's his role at second base lot easier, and so two shifts, and it really it should not be discounted. How important Orlando RICO was for the brewers defense being as good as it wasn't the infield. Even with a Camember the exact phrasing that one of the brewers called the last year, but it was something along the lines of an office of Lyman or an office of line infield..

"Which one, but either way Aguilar's probably gonna end up being the guy that gets most of the time they're in and whether it's themes or another option that they have on the roster that gets are that gets playing time at first base. I'm not sure, but Haza segula get out of beating the guy that really gets a lot of time there. So we kind of blue by him when we went through the catcher position kinda give me like the profile. What what Jake would Jacob Nottingham is going to be to this team. I mean, he's listed as a catcher and first baseman. Do you see him getting any time? Or is he going to be a guy that starts out in San Antonio? And kind of sits there for a minute. Yeah. I think it's it's smart to bring up Nottingham. And he's a guy that the brewers like and one point that was brought up at the press conference today that I did not really think about, but it makes a lot of sense is that the guy of has Grenell's caliber for one year on this team is going to allow Nottingham to one sit in continue to learn. But to also learns from grown doll, and I think you can learn how to call a game more. Properly on that saying he doesn't have that ability now. But when you have a guy like minded doll. You can always pick his brand that you have aircrafts Manny PINA there too. And I think Nottingham 'as private primarily going to start the season off in San Antonio, barring a trade of either aircrafts Pena, which could be entirely possible. But if there is one that stranded out, imagine, it'd be Kratz, but Nottingham is a guy that he can hit you can play good defenses while the pitchers in Milwaukee really high on him. They think he's got a bright future and his full energy to you should see a move around the clubhouse that guy eight probably has the most energy on the brewers roster and that saints something because he's he's just a lightning bug. And it's I think he's gonna end up having to future Milwaukee. I just don't think it's going to be this season. Right. So he has a future in the organization, which is awesome to hear. Let's continue to talk about somebody who has a feature on the organization Casten Hera. I mean, what can't you say about? This guy means. The number one prospect for this organization. He's going to probably play second base. I would imagine is he a guy that starts out in San Antonio. I mean, you have a guy like her non Perez and Spangenberg on the roster or does he start as the opening day starter for the Milwaukee Brewers? Yeah. David Stearns, are general managers is said that he will not be on the opening day roster this year, and they are going to be patient with them. It's it's unclear whether or not he's gonna start off in double or triple A, but his ability as a player is unique in the fact that his hitting is extremely well advanced for a player of his age. And I I mentioned yesterday and are different radio spot that I had a rival scouting director. Tell me that in all the years you've been watching players at the AA level. He's never seen a hitter at the at the level or the caliber of custody era that level and he was just blown away by his hitting. And then the only question Mark with him..
