NCAA Investigating Possible Violations by Nebraska, Football Coach Scott Frost
"Brett McMurphy of the Action Network, Nebraska head coach Scott Frost in the program. Investigated here for improper use of analysts and consultants. What does that even during practices and games? They also reportedly moved workouts to an undisclosed campus. Let's go to the quad. Instead, let's go streaking in the quad, not winning football games. He may as well try something else. Yeah, they basically they stretched like boundaries of what you can do in terms of practice time. I guess he was trying to get more reps in whatever and the frowns upon that. So this was limiting the workouts due to Covid 19. So I guess they tried to circumvent some things with Covid, which obviously the Covid 19 serious. So, So

"Breath, mcmurphy zoos reporting started a lot of all of the. Investigations that that just wrapped up. I know how state he'll be joining shortly here on the show phone line's lit. We'll take the phone calls in a second poll question. You want to just unpack it real quick. Yeah, real quick. Just talking about this urban Meyer situation was the punishment for urban Meyer, three choices here spot on not harsh enough or too much, and I want to just hit this to just got a tweet during the commercial break at Austin. Griffin, thirty seven. Thank you for listening watching funny that I don't remember rich Eisen going this hard on a roll. This Chapman on his domestic abuse allegations. Take off those maize and blue glasses. I'll tell you this right here. I criticized major league baseball. It's going on with the this Chapman. I thought the Ray rice case was. Awful. That that the growing pains, if you want to even call it that for the high state over the issue of domestic violence that you don't need an arrest, you don't need a charge or an arrest to know something is going on and should be addressed. The NFL went through all that Mary Jo White who just conducted this investigation was the one if I'm not mistaken, who did the rare rice investigation for the NFL. So and and I'll say this about the maize and blue stuff. If this was happening at Michigan, I be doing the same thing. I swear to you and on top of it, one more thing here that if. Everybody else at the AllState and response is true. It doesn't matter who the coaches at Ohio State you're beating Michigan anyway. Which is what I'm getting a lot too. Rob, Dayton, Ohio. Let's take. Let's take this phone call before Brett mcmurphy. How're you doing rob? I'm doing great. Read show on time listener. Thanks, brother. Hey, hey. One, I'm hearing you say you're talking about that to tally of everything, you know, and that leads towards filthy. Well, that's really not how our Justice system works. Yeah, it's about what you know. True and what can be proven, but you know, because it sounds to me like you're saying it's all about, you know, he knew that his higher up his, you know, boss is AB his title nine coordinator. They knew about it. It says so in that report. So yeah, when everyone above you that you're supposed to be reporting to, you know, knows because they told you then it's just about a piece of paper. I mean, he's should lose his job because he didn't sell out a piece of paper. Say, you know, it's, it's it rioting. What I'm saying rob is that if allows states sees all this, here's what I believe. Truly one thousand percent happen. They thought about. Firing him and they probably had a lawyer come in saying, it will be a hell of a battle, trying not pay him thirty eight million dollars to go away and they decided to go this route..

"So the same question I have for state. Is the same question I had for Meyer. About why keep Zac Smith rotten there's a whole sort of lurid stuff in here that are admire was aware of in between the the investigation by local police about cyber. Bullying and. And also domestic violence, all sorts of Lourdes stuff in here. I don't even want to go into it. You read the report. You even read some of in in in reporting. The same question Ferber Myra had is what was so huge about Zac Smith that you're willing to put it all out there. These even text exchange in this report with with the urban and his age in basically said, this guy was going to burn it some point. Anyway, this is after the finally fired him the firing which there's also a text from urban wife to urban that was found on the phone because it was within the one year of the settings on his phone saying that she concerned about the way the Zach was gonna react to the firing because he has anger issues and a drinking problem. Because there's so much stuff going back and forth you say, I mean, Zach Smith's lawyers statement yesterday saying that Zack's only guilty of at marrying the wrong woman urban said at some point. It's a, he said, she said with two kids situation, he texted to a former Ohio State athlete. So with all like. Why haven't him around. When that position is fun. Joel. So the same thing I say to a Haro state today who fired Jim tressel for a hell of a lot. Less craziness in many ways than this. Is it subtle important. To have urban Meyer still there is it. Seventy three eight is that it. Because on reading all this stuff that in total. I'm not a lawyer, but you could put this on the line in a case to say, you're out, we don't need this going on here. This is situation with the local news student newspaper. The lantern asked for a urban Meyer's phone based on the firing of Zac Smith, urban Myers state employees. They went through the proper channels of the school and a member of the school's legal staff asked the Atlantic director to comply with this request of information. Nobody even asked herb and I phone, I bet they're just afraid to even tiptoe around this guy. No wonder you feels like he's he could do whatever the hell he wants. Now, none of this says he damn well for sure Saul. This awful thing on Courtney Smith, and you knew that she was getting abused. He knew, for fact, and he did nothing about it. Nothing in here says that, but altogether nobody else can coach state really one of the greatest football programs in the history, college football tradition, rich, really. Knowing all comes down to it, three games where he can walk into the building in two Saturdays, he's around every day. He's going to get the kids ready for TCU, run, bam practice. Then we'll get on the plane. See you later. Really. I really would love to hear from Ohio State fan. I please. And I understand that Courtney Smith may have a ton of stuff going on her life that what her own mother doesn't believe her. But there's so much stuff he's he's on medication. So he's memory sometimes fades. First reaction when Brett mcmurphy story comes out is, can you help me set my cell phone to make sure that no texts are available from the last say every year involved in this situation. And if everybody out there thought Tom Brady was shady for bashing, his cell phone. What do you think about this. Brett mcmurphy first up Ryan leaf, our three Cody Bellinger the dodgers in studio. "Most recent issue is can inconsistent with our values needs to be cleaned up. In your words, just thought my response. Thanks THX. Mayer then went out and went a little bit further than that. Saying, quote, I can't say that I didn't. That didn't happen because I wasn't. There is never told anything about it. Never anything came to light. I've never had a conversation about it. So I know nothing about that when asked about the twenty fifteen reported incident. I heard about that was last night when I asked them people back at the office to call and see what happened. And they came back and they said, they know nothing about it. Once again, there's nothing. Once again, I don't know who creates a story like that. Meaning the felony arrest which wasn't the case. And I guess we all took it to mean knowing twenty fifteen at all, which it sure sounds like. Then the report says, Brett mcmurphy report comes out on August, I, but that is the Texas chain between urban 's wife and Courtney Smith photographs. All that comes out according to the report. Coach Meyer upon seeing this report when it first came out, this is the report of Brent mcmurphy on Facebook, Brian Volta Leany who's again the, he's the let me get this right? He is director football operations for the Ohio State University. I feel like Rachel Maddow right now. But I just want to put this all out there. He was on the practice field with coach Meyer went to speak with him commenting that this was a quote unquote, a bad article. The two discussed at that time, whether the media could get access to coach Meyer's phone and specifically discussed how to adjust the settings on Meyer's phone. So that text messages older than one year would be deleted. Our view of coach Meyer's phone revealed no messages older than one year indicating that at the time it was obtained by Ohio State on August. Second coach, Mars foam was set to retain text messages only for that period. As coach Meyer and Brian Volta Leany discussed. We can't determine whether the foam is set to retain messages for one year in response to the August first media report, or at some earlier time quote, it is nonetheless concerning that its first reaction to a negative media piece, exposing his knowledge of the law enforcement investigation was to worry about the media, getting access to information discussing how to delete messages older than a year. This report also says that urban Meyer in two thousand and nine. When Zac Smith wasn't fact arrested for assaulting his then pregnant wife at the time urban Meyer. According to this report said that he had both Zac Smith and courts Courtney Smith and his office at Florida to inform him that the arrest of Zac Smith had been based on incorrect information both Courtney and back told the investigate. Committee that Courtney wasn't there. Courtney told the investigation could be now when there I didn't recant. Committee also when it comes to the text messages, whether Shelly told urban Meyer about these text messages wife told urban about what Courtney Smith and urban. We're talking about. Quote, unquote. It's likely Shelley and urban had at least some communication about the allegations late fifteen. Although both had doubts about the credibility of Courtney's claims. Urban Meyer when asked an only the penultimate question of yesterday's press conference about did Shelly tell you about the text exchange. He said, no, you didn't know about. In terms of whether the investigation committee believes urban Meyer was telling the truth or lying on purpose. They say the wasn't deliberately lying at the press conference about it. And as I gotta read this one because this is the one that I think everybody's been talking about today. We accept that in July twenty eighteen coach Meyer was deeply absorbed in the football season. All right. Wanted to focus on football, a big ten media days the firing of Zac Smith the day before the first time coach, Mara had fired. A coach was also on his mind as was the Iranian media report of a felony arrest of Zac Smith and twenty fifteen. We also learned during the investigation that coach Mayer has sometimes had significant memory issues and other situations where he had prior extensive knowledge of events. He is also periodically taken medicine that can negatively impair his memory concentration and focus. All of these factors also need to be considered and weighed in assessing coach Mars mindset on July twenty. Fourth. Please try that in a court of law. I'm taking medicine. I've got, you know..

Report alleges risky behavior by former football assistant Zach Smith at Ohio State
"Iverson explosive claims about one of the two Ohio State football coaches now put on leave. During the school's investigation of how domestic abuse allegations were handled is, not urban Meyer. It's about what coach Zac Smith allegedly didn't 2015 according to stadium college football insider Brett mcmurphy with our, ABC news partner ESPN evidence of nude photos that cook inside the office and says ESPN's mcmurphy documents that. Soda tax ordered more than twenty two hundred dollars. And. Toys or paraphernalia photography equipment all of those items were delivered Zac Smith at the Woody Hayes athletic complex Columbus any SPN's mcmurphy. "Okay. Mic Murphy's been at this for quite some time in the this being covering sports in covering college football, longtime reporter for CBS sports also ESPN, and he broke the story over the last several days from his Facebook page as to what urban Meyer may have known what he did not know potentially about his wide receiver. Coach Zac Smith, battering his wife. There's no other way to put it. And Brett mcmurphy is here on the rich Eisen show. How are Brett. Good, Akron risk, good afternoon. So what do you know right now that having maybe advanced the story from what you you were already able to glean through text messages and conversations with those involved. Well, obviously, you know, the Ohio State after my report, Wednesday now sit, they would investigate the allegations. And then yesterday they announced a six man committee, special independent board working group related to the investigation. I reached out to two dozen athlete direct current outlet directors across the country in the past by twelve hours and what? What do you guys think this means I got as you can expect a lot of different opinions. The general contents is obviously, Ohio State has to find out exactly what happened if they have any thoughts of bringing him back, that means they're going to have to be going through four or five years of text messages from urban Meyer from showing monitor all their staff members, maybe even family members, and even if they do that, is there the concern that if they don't find anything and they decide to bring him back at some other evidence comes out that he did that hand did. Indeed, excuse me. No, about twenty fifteen. Most of them believe it's basically that they're looking to reach some kind of settlement with Meyer. I guess a large part of it is if our been decides the fight this, and if he does, then this'll probably be a long drawn out process, one AT with pretty animated. He basically said in today's landscape, they'll how state the president is. Of won't use his language, but blank list, scared because of what happened at Baylor. What happened at Penn State? I'm not comparing those situations with with the higher state, but basically and their situation, those the eighties and the president's got fired. He said, when when things start going downhill and can be proven in life can be prison. Then everyone runs for the hills and get out of hand. You don't know where it goes. So he thinks he thinks that maybe some of the mindset also. But ultimately, if urban Meyer digs his heels in, then they'll conclude conducting investigation. I think it could go on for a long time, but if there's no evidence that his wife did tell him right then in in that in that the story might be just like, how, how could a wife who knows about what's going on based again on your reporting in the text messages? Not tell her husband and if the, if. House state accepts that, then then it's possible that despite how that might be handled internally in the urban Meyer household, is that feasible? I mean, cannot take him. It has worked and it not that they don't trust him, but there's too much at risk here. And yes, I did not find any text messages. Courtney Smith did not provide any text messages that urban Meyer from urban Meyer that directly said he knew about it. But when you look at the volumes of text messages, she showed me back and forth between her and Shelley Mayer and other members of the of that excuse me, why of the staff members? And then the fact that Courtney and Shelley had multiple conversations about this Shelley feared for for Courtney's like, and then go back to two thousand nine. When Jack Smith was an assistant at Florida, he was arrested for aggravated assault on a pregnant female. Courtney was ten weeks pregnant. It was. It was on the one year. Wedding anniversary Courtney dropped the charges. She told me in part because hi to freeze who's at Florida then and his official title. The higher state now is special assistant to the head coach. He pressured her to drop the charges she went through with it, decided to drop the charges during that time. Urban said it big ten media days that him and Shelly council, but young couple back in two thousand nine to help him out..

He said not at all. Nothing. Nothing to them out late July, early August. And by the way, if you can't, if you can't start, then you start the MVP and Super Bowl. Yes. I mean, hold on. Gosh, Carson Wentz can't place. Let's put him a guy who won the MVP the Super Bowl instead. And as a matter of fact, if Carson Wentz can't start week one that I thirsty night shouldn't mic. Foles didn't earn that start. Totally. I think they start anyway, right? I think he should start anyway, regardless of where Wentz and then have wench come in. Nick foles likes STAN. But I'm just trying to tell all fans. It's part of whole picture training camp guys aren't going to get burned out. They might not practice for week at a time. There's a little bit of a tweak or some sort of an injury, Franconia Brown. You know what? We don't need them here. He's, he runs the runs reps. He knows exactly what this offenses send them home, get him checked out, give them a week off Doug Baldwin. Now if he doesn't play the whole preseason, it might linger into the season. Then you have to have some sort of concern to keep an eye on that. The same thing with the reps that call these fouls last night. The same thing with Richard Sherman getting burned on on a route. I mean, we see all this stuff on Twitter feeds and Facebook. We know more about training camp in ever before. NFL network came on to start in two thousand three. You know, there was no Twitter. Live tweeting out OTA's in two thousand four. It was still aga- type stuff in your newspaper to see what was going on in terms of the transactions. Yeah, you don't bottom lines. No, we just know more stuff, right? You didn't have eleven on eleven stats. He didn't know the pet Mahomes kill everybody. Wanna get eight days. Willie roof is the largest human being. I think I've ever did you see Jonathan Ogden though that guy is unbelievable. Okay, we, let's take a break. We're back in sixty seconds here with Brett mcmurphy here on the rich Eisen show what a story that he has broken and we'll get the latest from him on what's going on Ohio State and.

"And then if the answer is no will state than let that be known that she knew all this stuff but kept a firewall with her husband. I mean, that is the real difficult conversation that is being had amongst Ohio State fans here in Ohio. And I've been here less than twelve hour or what twelve hours. No, more than that. Fourteen fifteen hours and I've been able to gather that walk through an airport and these hallways here. Eight, four, four, two, four, riches, the number to dial Brett mcmurphy joining us in the middle of this hour, Dan Fouts top of hour number three. If this event ends before then fifty more minutes, we are being Jack, we're okay. We're trying to wrangle. Jack, is wrangled out of the room. We'll get him if not, you'll do your news update which includes, I do believe Bill Belichick having a minute ten minute seventeen second long conversation with media members about a certain birthday today as not my wife's right. Schuster's birthday brought up to Bill Belichick is your wife's birthday today. Happy birthday to Suzy help out. My wife shares a birthday with Tom Brady, hold on. It's pretty perfect who've the most perfect people. Sharing a perfect together if only Dirk cheaters. Is it okay. Bell Brady valid. The Brady media exchange in regards to Brady's birthday where there was a large cake brought out to serve five thousand eight Jagannadha cake people. Five thousand fans were fed cake today. So you're saying that the patriots told their fans. They came to me cake. This cake is huge. I'll re tweet it right now. Kim Jones tweeted it out where it is enormous. I'll reach of cake or words. Chris Brockman never said in the history of the rich Eisen show, but I'm glad that you did. Thank you. Okay. So that's how we're rolling here in our number two of our show from canton, Ohio only come back to leave the be Jack Youngblood or Chris Brockman news update with the man who's had been on top of a monster, breaking story in college football with what's going on at Ohio State Brit mcmurphy joining us in the middle of this hour. It's very exciting time of the gambling betting world, and.

"I'm not kidding you. I'm not kidding you. It's one of my favorite weekends of the year. It's folks here in stark county. Ohio are awesome and all of them when they bring out the urban Meyer store, you're like, you're happy. Right? And I'm like, no, I am not. This is not as not. You want to beat them at all. I mean, all of them said that all of them said that. Brett mcmurphy is on in the middle of this hour. We'll discuss it with him and we had fell on yesterday. And he said when it first broke, I thought maybe there was a twenty five percent chance. He doesn't coach and then in the afternoon, I thought it was fifty percent. And then yesterday he told us he thinks it seventy five percent that urban doesn't coach again all every single how state fan that's come up to me like, what do you think? And then they're like, if it's true, they can't believe it. They can't believe it. And so I don't know what the latest is going to be today as when Ohio State starts Ryan day is the interim coach for the moment or whatever the I don't even want his title is going to be, but the guy who's taking over for the guy on paid administrative leave is guess what his title is very long time on a card that'll print out a card for it. But the conversation here as as he is opening up training camp fried up today in Columbus is that should there be a vacancy here, Ohio State and your I? I'm hearing it here in town and I read it in USA today. Bob stoops. He's fifty seven years old. As we all know he's the does navigate. He's not going back to Oklahoma, right? He's from Ohio. Everybody's from Ohio. Everybody. Really is, you know. Everyone's from Ohio. It's unbelievable. And you know that that stoops would be choice. One. That it, you know, he's a guy who knows how to run a big program. He's a guy that is from the area. He's a guy that you know, I, it's, it's one of those coaching jobs where everybody has a clause in their contract, you know, hey, if such and such jobs, it seems like everybody has an Ohio State clause. What Notre Dame is also, you know a one of those types of schools that has that sort of clause. Obviously, he doesn't have any contract he could take over tomorrow if they make that move and and move fast. And then another name that's mentioned here quite a bit is Matt Campbell whose Iowa state's coach who crushed it Toledo, who's from nearby massillon, Ohio. It's right down the road here from the pro football fame, see he knows the area. He knows the situation that he'd be that type of guy to go ahead and come in you an eight and five last year for. State. They're already talking this way. Fifty seven years old. I wonder if that's. That's young. That's that's that. Yes. These young coaches across big programs is at the rec shin that fan spec. It's also like fantasy sports, you know, hey, I'll trade you. I'll trade you my guy for three of your all pros. Like you start naming names the money, you know, keep naming them all, but that's the conversation that's going on down here. People are absolutely freaking out. And it does look like again as Brett mcmurphy will join us. It does look like again that that urban Meyer, there's no chance that he didn't know through his wife what was going on with wide receiver coach, Zac Smith, and everybody here knows how revered Earle Bruce was by him. Is it possible that he knew this and look the other way or thought it wasn't as serious or didn't pay as much attention to it as he should have because he was blinded by love for Earle, Bruce, that is the conversation that's going on here. And if that's not true. Urban Meyer must be sitting at home right now. Stewing and taking names. And take names. And is it possible that that he didn't know that his wife finding out all this stuff, the texts that Brett mcmurphy revealed. Did not then turn around put the phone down after texting with. Zac Smith's, estranged, and and battered wife and not then say urban. You know this, what's going on. You gotta get rid of this kid. You know, she, she doesn't have a restraining order. Maybe we could be his restraining order sent him home. That's it. Did she not do that?.

"Welcome to our number two of the rich Eisen show. We have a pro football hall of fame program tonight, and the jacket dinner will be emceeing is we just saw the end of the first hour. This is news to me, Jim, Kelly made it. He is here. We are soon. He will be well enough to attend all of the festivities, but for the moment he is here looking great smiling, he looked himself. It did awesome grit, and he did make it to the pro football hall of fame, two thousand eighteen induction weekend, at least for the Nici luncheon, the private affair where is jacket, yellow jackets, only you either have one or you're about to get one or you don't. It is that simple and that is the requirement to be in that room. Jack Youngblood said he would come out of the room. It might be too intense in there from to come out of the room. Aby comes out of the room. He'll sit down here and join us when the all time great pass rushes from the Los Angeles Rams I ratio of the law. Los Angeles Rams days. He is here. Slated to be on this show in the middle of this hour. Brett mcmurphy the former ESPN reporter who is still sticking to his craft and who broke the news on his own Facebook page. Talk about a twenty first century story or at least journalism story about what's going on at Ohio State and what urban Meyer may have known and when he may have known it in what that means in terms of title nine violation of his contract that could cause one of the most successful college football coaches, and one of the most successful Ojo state coaches of all time to partways or have Ohio State Parkway's with him. It is truly topic number one here in state of Ohio. I, this topic number one. It is not the Browns and the excitement of the Browns. It is not what any Bengals fan might be excited about for the two thousand eighteen season with Tyler. I haven't come on the show. It is topic number one, two and three that anybody says to me. You know and the by the way, the great people of stark county, Ohio. This is how much they love this all weekend in what what it means to them and and what it means to them is how much love football, but how much they love people coming here to love football and love this event. And you know. Plane lands last night planes Charles Haley's just told us we're number one by did that was very Sailly came out. I came out of the Charles elite just stole down the hallway. They went to the maybe and told us, we're number one. He literally stopped banged on the glassy turn around and until you or number told me, I was number one. Yeah, it's interesting. Well, there are with the dock ins and to yoga in a lot of birds flying around or so. That was incredible Jefferson, who's our social media coordinator. Huge cowboy fan. And who's standing the hallway in case Jack, Jack Youngblood comes out. Did he get that on our for our Instagram page? I don't that he fire off a photo things. Plane lines. Last night guy sitting across from me because of the plane landed in canton around eleven o'clock. By the way it was not lost on me either. As a. A guy who leads Yankee pinstripes yesterday was the thirty ninth anniversary of Thurman Munson passing away at the canton airport was thirty nine years ago where I me and my bunk mates at camp. Lo Kanda at the summer camp, I was going to. We balling we're just absolutely bawling over the hell. Were you then? So sick it out thirty nine years ago was ten. Do the math, but any rate so that we touched down safely guy turns me goes, it's sometimes difficult to get a car. This time of night cab is time tonight. If you don't have a car here for you more than to drive you to your hotel. Wow, that happened everyone here. So okay, I get off the plane and people are like, you know, do you know where to go?.

"To listen to for his information as he said, he's going to be at stadium in a couple of weeks. Obviously this week, his story on his Facebook account about Courtney Smith and and what she said about the domestic abuse that she has faced in relation to urban Meyer and what he did know what he did not know is the biggest story. I would argue of the year in college football, at least at this point Brett, it goes without saying, this is like really remarkable work, and the fact that you did the your Facebook page is just like in itself. A fascinating story. For sports media in twenty. We've known each other for a long time, and I, I certainly wish you the best of luck for stadium. I'm glad to see that in the post in your post ESPN world. I think you've landed at a great spot. So thanks so much for being a guest, and I am sure that we will pass will cross again in in some way. Thanks very much for giving me this amount of time to end the sports media podcast. Absolutely. Richard, anytime. Really appreciate it are back in the studio, my thanks to Brett mcmurphy for his time. And I think that's probably the most detailed explanation on the process of this. So people who are people who who read the story, and certainly the interest in house state land is going to be great. They can listen to Brett and make their decision about his reporting, but pretty clear, pretty rock-solid reporting, at least in my opinion, previous guests on these sports media with Richard is podcast. Last week we had Frank sold the Clifton Brown and Ben writer, Frank, Sola with incredibly candid words on being let go. Oh, from trunk after twenty, five years at the daily news. So the that that is, I think interesting journalism podcast for your prior to that Conrad Thompson, the the podfather at this point of three immensely, popular wrestling podcasts and sort of how he's doing what what he's doing and then just go down the list of guests from Molly Sullivan Adnan Virk to Chris Thompson, Joe Tessa tore doors, Berkshire will Reeve please. If you're interested in this kind of content, Goto apple podcasts go to sports media, Richard Dikshit, sign up, leave us a review. So Mr. Pellegrino when I can eat, we would definitely appreciate that four cadence, thirteen for loophole. Green this Richard. I see again on the sports media podcast..

"I can honestly tell you that I do not have anything, and I'm ready to hit the send or post button on my Facebook page at this moment. But like anyone else I continue to to report this, obviously, now that it's out the sharks are circling. Everybody's gonna be all the national committee. We'll be looking at different angles trying to uncover whatever other evidence that's out there. And I'm sure there's other stuff out there. I'll continue pursue it. And when I do get information that I think's valid and legit and I will report it is I had in the past one quick other thing I just thought of about this whole process thing. The one thing I learned in the last. Eighteen months. It made it more clear than anything. And when I first got ESPN five years ago, I thought, man, I'm ESPN. This is awesome. It's unbelievable. I it, it raised my, you know, profile nationally and all that stuff. But what I found out in the last eighteen months, you can stay relevant on Twitter, Facebook. If you've got good information, if you've got solid information, people are gonna find you. And basically that's what I learned. It's in a weird way. It's almost like we don't really need these giant media corporations anymore because we can get our message out. And I think you're seeing with a lot of athletes that you know basically when they have any type of news, they just posted on their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever, instead of going through the traditional route of calling up a writer and having them break the story. That was one of the things that kinda, you know, dawned on me during these last eighteen matches. Well, maybe I'm, I'm not going to be so insignificant at all. If I can just keep reporting news, people are gonna find me. That's well said, read and you're, you're exactly right about that. All right. Last thing I wanna talk about is your own future you. I believe this money even been my reporting. I don't remember you. Can you confirm that you that you are heading to stadium at a certain point to be a an on air reporter for them or an on air insider for them? Yeah, I started stadium on August thirteen. I will be a college football insider. There will be doing on air reports. My role for this fall has not been solidified, but I do have the opportunity also to do sidelines for games that they broadcast cards football game and and or be at third man in the booth for cards, football games. Obviously, this is opportunities. I did not have any SPN and I think would compliment what I can bring is a news reporter and I have cannot confirm this, but I've seen reports that Jeff Goodman is also going there. And so I'm really excited. That's great. And best of luck with that the the other question would be that, does that mean that there is still do you have the option or opportunity to also have a employer where you were strictly writing for you, or would stadium be exclusive in that for the moment your your work is going to be, you know, video based or digital video based as opposed to any kind of straight writing somewhere. I, I will be writing also I stadium, but you know, I think it again haven't finalized all the details, but I could have opportunities to put stuff on my Facebook page. If it's something that maybe stadiums, you know, maybe doesn't have a place for obviously any breaking news information will be reported four stadium. So that would that would be the main outlet for for my news breaks news information. Gotcha. Okay. Well, let's. Interestingly enough, you probably have earned some money for stadium prior to even your formal working, they're giving all the attention that the story rightly has has gone bread mcmurphy as anyone in college football knows is one of the one of the people in the sport you have to read and you have to watch, and you have.

"You come for the wings and stay for the baseball. Buffalo Wild Wings wings beer, sports bread. One of the things that would happen at a place to the places I've worked at Sports Illustrated or the ethnic. If a person had your story, there would have been lawyers vetting. The peace would have been lawyers talking to the writers and the editors to make sure that everything. You know that that that every sort of everything legally had been taken care of there would have been fact checkers, obviously fact checking the reporting of the writer. Did you have anyone prior to hitting publish on Facebook, who's a lawyer or has some kind of legal background look at the peace, or did you just report the peace and hit the button? I did not have any lawyers. Look at it. I had to individuals who are employed. Currently elsewhere that I will not reveal that I ran ideas by had them look at it. I asked him, I want you to look at this and tell me if there's any screw ups I need. This has to be one hundred percent locked in, and I can confided in those two friends of mine that are in the media business and they, they were, if you will. They were my fact checkers if you will. But no, I had no legal representation look at it or anything like that. Because again everything and there's documented, there's not an unnamed source or anything in there. So I really didn't feel the need quite frankly to have lawyers look at this. But certainly if I would have been at a media company, I'm sure lawyers would have wanted to go over everything and and have their opinion on what could or could not be reported got one more for you before we hit the ESPN part Brett, you're smart enough to know that we live in an age now. Where there's a lot of animus towards the media. We have political leaders calling the media, the enemy of the people constantly saying that everything is fake news, college football, you know, this better than me has very, very rabid fans who sometimes will essentially just defend the program oftentimes above even evidence that right, that's right in front of them, how concerned are.
"brett mcmurphy" Discussed on Sports Media with Richard Deitsch
"And the first thing I told her was Courtney, I believe, I'll believe everything you tell me until you give me a reason not to believe, but you have to be a hundred percent honest. The other thing is this is not going to be a. He said, she said story. I said, I wanna see, I wanna see hard evidence. I said, you don't have to convince me you have to convince everybody out there. That's not going to believe that you're telling me the truth. So if you tell me something and you can't verify it, we documentation I'm not gonna put it in my story. And I think you mentioned this earlier. That's what I'm most proud about this report. There's no, there's not one unnamed source and a story. There's not one unnamed bit of information in the story. Everything is police reports, text messages, emails, documents, direct quotes from either urban Meyer or Courtney Smith, or Tex Mex Tex messages, exchanges between coordinate and a number of wise on their house. Coach. Stuff. So I guess to wrap it up when I first started this looking into Zach at that Florida, I would never would have envisioned. It would ultimately end with what looks like the end of urban Meyer's career. I think it's all because urban Meyer's Tuesday, press conference in how he responded and said he had no knowledge of that if he answers in any other way, saying I knew about it, but I, you know, we decided not to do anything. He was never convicted. I take responsibility for that domestic violence is serious issue. We need to do better on that. It's all on me whatever. He says, he's gonna catch some blow back and then and then Wednesday gets here and he's still the coach, but it all changed when urban went all in on. He didn't know Brett. How did you first reach out to Courtney Smith? Think people would be interested in? Do you cold call her? Do you call Email her? And what is her?.
"brett mcmurphy" Discussed on Sports Media with Richard Deitsch
"All right. Eventually, Brett, I wanna end this with sort of ESPN lending you go and what that has been like for you over the last couple of months. And then the I mean beyond spectacular irony that they are the ones requesting you yesterday and today to to to to be on their airwaves. I mean, the the irony of that really. It can't be overstated. But before that, let's let's sort of give the listeners of time line of the pro as well as some details on the process. When did you first approach or become aware of Courtney Smith and her story? I don't have the exact date Richard, but it was. It was approximately about three or four weeks ago and it wasn't necessarily Courtney Smith. It was. It was mainly Smith, and then I started looking into it. I, the first thing I did is I made a simple public records request with the Gainesville police department and wallah I get a two thousand nine arrest report. When Zac Smith was a graduate assistant Florida at detailed police incident report that I posted on my Facebook page. I then researched it had never been reported. I'm guessing that the Florida guys that are usually real aggressive and I think they are aggressive is not a shot at them, but the guy was grads Sistan Courtney. Eventually dropped the charges. So he was never convicted. And so maybe that's why that went under the radar. So as I started looking into that calling around looking into Zach Smith, I've been made a public records request with the Palo Haya police department. Now, at this point, we're talking about Friday before big ten, excuse me, Saturday before big ten media days, I get back. They might public records request that Courtney Smith has been issued a domestic violence civil civil order protection against ex-miss. It actually happened on Friday and I look around. It's not been reported. The only thing that has been reported public publicly at this time about Jack Smith is that he had a trespass warning, I believe, two days prior to that. So I'm like, wow, this is unbelievable. I also just happened to be going to big ten media days. That was a total coincidence. When I got laid off. I said, I wanna try need to go out to these media days. I need to remind these coaches that I'm not dead and I'm still alive that I will continue working somewhere some point for for media outlet. And so I just happen to have it scheduled that I would go to big ten on Monday morning. I report what had not been reported accident. The rest in two thousand nine x myths or excuse me, what the domestic violence civil order that was Monday morning about eight AM at Chicago about an hour later, higher state, pathetic release that says, this is a personnel matter. We usually don't comment about these things publicly, and that was the end of their statement later on that day about five PM. I then reported the twenty fifteen incident. I copy of the police report. I reported it at that time. No one else that reported it. Fifty minutes after I reported that Zac Smith was fired. We go the next day, Tuesday, urban Smith. You've seen the everyone seen the clip about two thousand fifteen basically says, why would some. Create a story like that. So I'm thinking to myself. Why in the world is urban Meyer denying he knows about twenty fifteen. When I've seen the police documents. The problem was I find out later that actually those documents had been sealed by attorney. I didn't realize that at the time I did know that for some reason they weren't available for public through public records request. The pal, Ohio police department then made those documents available later Tuesday. Ironically, about an hour after the of states media availability ended that basically verified what I report it was accurate. And so then when that happened, then I'm like, okay, this time line is is not make any sense. How how'd you know what else is going on? I continued to report. I, you know, went down different avenues, hit some brick walls. I kept her suing it eventually I was able to track down Courtney Smith. She agreed to talk to me. I spent three days in Columbus. Went over all the all the evidence documents, text messages, everything she had..
"brett mcmurphy" Discussed on Sports Media with Richard Deitsch
"And Secondly, that's not something that they would get a quick answer out of. I'd have to go through their legal department and then they would have, you know. So that wasn't that wasn't a choice. I honestly, I really didn't think about it. My biggest issue when I started reporting this, I never knew it would lead the best. But as I started writing it and I kept going, I'm like, oh, I add this. I got this, and you know, I'm sensitive to people's attention span. I don't wanna you know, put Warren piece on Facebook. I actually got the point where I told my. My wife. I said, I need to Google and see a Facebook has a limit on how many characters or words you can put on a post. 'cause my nightmare was when I'm ready to go with this story and I cut and pasted and put it on Facebook, I get an air messes that you're, you're, you're post is too large, and then I'd be like, what in the world I'm I going to do now. So fortunately I found out that they, they increase the limit of characters for Facebook post. I think it's some ridiculous number. I didn't get close to it, but yeah, I didn't have any. I didn't have any thoughts of trying to sell the story to anybody. Certainly I wasn't paid. I didn't pay Courtney Smith talk to me or anything like that. I said, you know what? I'm a report this story and see what I can find out. Obviously never would have envisioned it. It reached this point. Ultimately, it started out just I heard that there was some domestic violence issues with Zach Smith. It is times at Florida. I did a couple of public simple public record request. Got the. Information, and then it's been a marble down a amount since then we'll get into specifics. I wanna stay on the Facebook stuff just to sort of wrap that part up when when you posted your story, Brett, what were your expectations? Did you did you just expect that it might be limited to the college football circles that you're in? Or I guess what I'm wondering is this is one of the if this, if not the biggest story where reporter uses Facebook as the platform that eventually the traditional places like ESPN and the New York Times in Washington Post, pick it up. I'm not sure I can remember a story that someone posted on a sports story, someone posted on their individual account that then became a massive story in traditional mainstream media places not to mention the sports blog is fear. No, I certainly had no idea the impact it would have. I mean, obviously, I know you know how successful urban Meyer is the coach. Which I'd say he's a second best coach behind Nick Sabin and college football, you know. But again is I is I continue to report it and and the the information that I covered, I realized, wow, this is getting to be a bigger and bigger story, but no, in my in my biggest expectations, I didn't think it would have this much impact. I mean, you know, I was joking about twenty new for the first time, but you know, CNN's reached out to me. I did the today show. I was actually did. I tweeted. I've been on sportscenter more in the past day. Then my first five years at ESPN I've literally had a hundred media requests to do TV radio. That's not. Why did this story? I'm just trying to explain to you the impact, but no, Richard certainly I could never have been visioned the that it would be this big, but I guess I'm too far in the weeds with it, but I guess people are, you know, I'd I'd person I know very well that it's one of my good sources and she has a nineteen year old. Or she has nothing to do with the story. She's in another area of the country, and she text me and said, hey, I just wanna let you know, I loved your story, and I sent it to my nineteen year old daughter because I want her to know about domestic violence and all the all the pitfalls of that. And also on a side note that you know, you basically reported this on your own. You didn't work for big media company, and if you wanna do something you can do it. You don't have to be aligned with the behemoth media company to to do these type of things and that you know that really touched me a lot..

There may be lawsuits that can happen here. And if you if you if you know anything about college sports, anytime, lawsuits become a possibility.
