"Brett Hollander show WBAL NewsRadio ten nine Baltimore station. WBAL warehouse Brett Hollander was critical of Ann Coulter for demanding. That the president not give an inch to get the government reopened. I don't think it's helpful. I don't think she's right on most of the things she says, Dan, a caller named Tawana said, it's all part of the president's plan to get his cancelled state of the union address back on the schedule. Maybe we can go ahead and plan, and he can still get his state of the union through then he can come back and play his Trump card shut the government down or do the state of emergency. That's the way. I'm okay now west to Omaha in station, KFA B and mid day host Chris Baker. He put it this way to his audience did the president cave or did he punt callers gave different answers to that question? Baker himself said the president punted in an attempt to improve his field position in the debate. He continued with the football allergy. But I'm also going to say this he had to punt because his offense of line, which would be Republicans suck. They're horrible. Quote me on that. And so we did all of this. Of course is just a snapshot of some immediate reaction to yesterday's news. The president's base seems to be giving him room to maneuver at least for the next three weeks. "Bridge expansion coming up it's the question on the brit holder facebook show page right now should we expand the bay bridge and there's a study out right now done by the state to look at whether or not there should be expansion to the bridge or adding additional bridge all this is a lot of layers to it but it's kind of counter what many of you are probably dealing with right now which is traffic and if you're not doing that now you might deal with it at some point over the next three months heading towards eastern shore and by the way are single pretty good eastern shore if you're they're coming back western shore so the theory is and this is what the transportation department is thinking that over the next decade as bad as traffic might be on certain occasions now on the bridge or trying to get to the bridge on either side it's going to get a lot worse in the coming years so what should we do and it's not as simple as saying alright i'm here in this short town and i'm totally fine with building another bridge here that big project that expensive and big project is perfect for my little town and everything that comes along with a major road flowing through and then a building of a bridge i'm totally cool with so it is messy so the question is should we and where would you go and how bad is traffic as you make your trip on fifty right now so we'll get into that a little later and you can check out our facebook question right now the brit holders show facebook question you also text us four one zero four six seven nine two to five by the way in the podcast out later today we will talk about the crabbing industry in the season in maryland that's on the brett hollander show podcasts available wbal dot com i tunes in stitcher and we're really getting into the summer season a couple.

"Brett hollander back we do here on wbal we're talking about the juvenile system here in the state of maryland it how broken is joining us right now someone who knows it really well from both sides warne alperstein longtime maryland attorney and former juvenile prosecutor baltimore city joins us right now and warrants great to see you good to be back with you well let's talk about this system and as you're going through as a prosecutor what are you up against i don't think we think about the prosecutors were really trying hard especially we all over there trying to do the good work in the state of maryland and putting really bad dangerous people behind bars and playing the role of the state but in the city and specifically for the juvenile part of this hell hard is there gig so it's extremely frustrating i was a prosecutor in the baltimore city state's attorney's office i spend time prosecuting juvenile crimes before i kind of moved up doing adult felony crimes and it is extremely frustrating because the the the the police don't believe the system works they don't have an incentive to go chase juveniles when they're committing crimes juvenile certainly do not fear anything really bad happening to them when they ultimately do get apprehended and i think resources remain very limited there's not many options where you can house repeated violent offenders and i think that's the problem right now that that's the problem he continues to be the problem you know we can talk about other issues in our society that probably contribute to the you know these skyrocketing juvenile violent crime rates but the bottom line is is that there are many problems that remain either leave within the juvenile justice system here in maryland specifically in baltimore city i.

"And to the wbal ab well it has been one week since daryl desouza was charged with failing to file his federal taxes and in that time he has now been let go and we are on the hunt again for a police commissioner in baltimore city and my question to you was do we need to go outside of baltimore city to find the right person for the job not just based on qualifications but have we gotten to a point in the city where there's so much distrust distrust between the citizens of baltimore city and the government the citizens of baltimore in the police department and then the police department itself i mean let's not forget during and after the freddie gray riots there was a lot there were a lot of issues of police officers feeling that they were not being backed up that they were not going to be backed up that they were basically on their own with regards to any decisions that they made so are we at a point now in the city do we need to go outside of baltimore city to find the next police commissioner and we're joined right now by brett hollander host of the brett hollander show from one to three and we're talking about this issue and we're taking some of your calls so let's get a call in here let's get a stewart in owings mills stewart you're on wbal what are your thoughts nationwide search it's the best person comes from baltimore so be it the the widest possible net and if we can find somebody that's been there and done that police commissioner means a hole police department you've got to be able to be strong enough to stand up to the politicians and this is what we need to do he you need somebody who's going to be strong enough to do the notes you need to that end.

"News radio i'm filling in for brett hollander who's actually covering the nfl draft today and tomorrow and we're talking about the the the supreme court hearing oral arguments on president trump's travel ban in whether or not look part of what has made this so difficult part of what i think brought the case up to this level a war president trump's comments during the election during the election he made a lot of references to what what he called adding dangerous people come into the country and talk about muslims and one of the things that i thought was so dangerous about president trump wasn't so much president trump himself but his lack of discipline when he talks about certain things i've said a million times i voted for president trump so let's just get that out of the way but on the same hand let's also remember that for a lot of people he was not the first choice and that i think in part to do with his the way he says things the way he characterizes things is over exaggeration of things i've said a million times now out of sixteen candidates he wasn't even my seventeenth choice okay i didn't like the guy i didn't like what he said i didn't like how he said it i understood the idea behind what he was trying to say the idea that we should put americans i the idea that we need to get americans back to work that we should be more concerned with what goes on in our own borders for a time instead of trying to fix everyone else's problems that maybe we should start vetting the people that come into this country and if we can't bet them like we've been told by our intelligence agencies that we can't vet them significantly or to a point that we believe that there probably here safe that they're safe to come into this country then they have no business coming in here so let's just get all that out of the way but president trump has had a history of putting his foot in his mouth of saying things that often don't make sense or that don't matter or they just take away from what he's actually trying to do and it doesn't help.

"To hear us on your amazon device brett hollander is next on wbz newsradio ten ninety well the hopkins police force and that idea is being put on the backburner by maryland lawmakers and this on the baltimore sun they say they will not endorse the johns hopkins university proposal to create its own police force in baltimore at least not this spring that's what officials said on friday and delegate curt anderson the chair of the city's delegation to the general assembly said that the university did not built enough community support for the idea and that was a growing theme as this process began that hopkins didn't build enough community support i'm not really sure even what that means but again i look at this as a classic case of not understanding the stakes if you're a lawmaker if you're a politician in the city and or the state and i know the mayor was in favor of it the police commissioner was a favorite there's a lot of support for it we're seeing pop up security forces all done through private security all done right way pop up throughout the city in recent months and years because these cities these people are saying in these communities that i love liberty so much and most of this is coming in areas that have a already gigantic tax burden they're saying i pay so much already i love it here so much but you know what i just can't depend on what's going on right now so if we can bring in our own private security to help well if i feel safer because of that if i feel more secure because of that that benefits the entire city and why the mayor likes it why the police commissioner likes it because it frees them up to do more police work in the rougher neighborhoods in rougher areas that's a good thing and the reality of it.
