Who has a long way to go and just to show that. I'm going to give you my top number one. Obviously tom brady ten super bowls being able to make the super bowl playing in his forties. That's amazing number. Two joe montana. Four for four in the super bowls they also achieved the rare feat of winning three in a row nineteen ninety there in the nfc championship game. He gets out by leonard. Marshall they won the super bowl that they would have won that game and then number for three. We talk about peyton manning. Mvp trophies and so we know how special peyton manning wasn't what he meant to our game. So i think we have to understand how much further patch mahomes has to go. But we have mentioned this as well if hashem aho's wins two more meaning this one and another one and then he goes on to shatter all of the passing and td record at that point. He enters the room with the conversation of the greatest of all time. At that point he inches that room. And then we say okay. Maybe it's not just about the super bowls. Maybe now we can look at the armed town. We can look at the mobility all the other things around. Just than just winning super bowls at that point when i look at it.

No people are still writing US novels to tell us how they feel about this current NFL season, when that's not what we're looking for, So I invoked Star Wars. Of course I'm going to make you go Look for those of you who are Huge star Wars nerds like me or even casual fans. You will likely recognize this moment. You'll certainly recognize the subject. I used a GIF orange. If people get mad at me every time, which is why I keep doing it that way. I don't know which way is more proper or my popular, but I'm not changing now. So check it out and then answer our question yourself. Without using words. How would you describe the NFL season to this point, and some of you have shared hysterical gifts and means we've got some from the office. We've got Bill Belichick throwing the phone. I mean, the phone. Chuck is classic for for the NFL in 2020. We've got all kinds of really funny ones that have made me laugh out loud in my studio over the past few hours, plenty of Aaron Rodgers lots of the bills as well. Andy Reid, gapping. I mean, we've got all kinds of crazy stuff and producer Dave so I went Star Wars. Producer day, for some reason, decided he was going to stick with the Nickelodeon theme, which I believe CBS Corporation will appreciate your choice for a gift to describe the NFL season is that would be Patrick from SpongeBob? And he is just head over heels in love with what the NFL has done all season, and it's so pleased with the fact that we've gotten to where we are today. Here's my favorite thing about Patrick and SpongeBob Square pants. He's pink. Real men wear and real men are pink. I don't know. But his name is Patrick and his pink. And real men wear pink that they do. And also real men cry as we saw this weekend, Aaron Donald getting a really emotional over football been robbed this burger the week before, And yet, For some reason we saw farm or bed. Rafa's burger means crying than we did. Aaron Donald is that because people think Erin Donald might hurt them, Yeah, that's probably most of it or they think Big Ben might be retiring. Oh, yeah. Okay, Well, we have no definitive word there. No definitive word yet on Drew Brees. Though the debate continues, we don't yet know about Philip Rivers. I suspect these guys are trying to catch up on some sleep, some mental and physical respites and we'll we'll find out when they're ready to tell us And it is. It should be up to them. Now, in both the case of New Orleans and Pittsburgh, I'm not so sure. It's entirely 100% the choice of the quarterback. We know what happens when the franchise leans on a quarterback and tries to get him to retire before he is ready, Brett Farve, But in the case of both the Saints and the Steelers, I think that they would take these quarterbacks again. And yet, you wonder if that might actually hamper the team. Now, I don't know for sure. We know Rob this burger can through the can still throw the ball. But there were times toward the end of the year where you could tell that the wear and tear was catching up with him. Not having a run game in Pittsburgh was definitely catching up with him in the case of the Saints there so far over the salary cap. Their window may be closed here. But maybe not. Sean Payton is a brilliant coach. He had told us a month ago that the quarterback of the future he didn't say when. But he said the quarterback to succeed Drew Brees was in the building already. Which would mean either Taysom Hill who didn't play this last weekend. Honestly, I think that was a piece that was missing Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston, who did play and did throw 1 56 yard touchdown pass on a trick play. Anyway, We're gonna wait for these guys. I have always appreciated going back to the days following Super Bowl 50. As much as all the signs in the world pointed to Peyton Manning, hanging it up that he couldn't possibly come back and play another year. Hey, was 40 years old. His physical skills have diminished because of the injuries. It was painful to watch him play at times, and this is coming from someone who loves Peyton everything that he that he meant to the NFL, not just the Denver Broncos. But John Elway waited on Peyton Manning to make that choice. The Broncos did not want to come off as a franchise that was shoving him out the door even if they wanted to move on without him. Oh, dear Lord, now looking back. That was Brock Osweiler. That was that was the bronchus Wyler off season where he chose to take the money in Houston. And it all went horribly wrong for all of his franchises as well as for the Broncos, But I digress. Jonah, we waited Sean Payton will wait on Drew Brees because breezes earned that. And I think Mike Tomlin will do the same in Pittsburgh as well. The Rooney family because been wrought. This burger has earned that and and so you be patient and you wait even if it feels like time and the walls are closing in on you. "And it just didn't get done. So I think the jury's still out a little bit on Kirk Cousins, and then obviously they also went the trade route. I mean, they have bred far they had case Keenum. So obviously you could say Brett Farve was really good for them at the time he was in Minnesota. Granted, they didn't make it to the end result of what they wanted to do there, either. But I think Brett Farve played well enough after his time in Green Bay that I think you could call that a success as well, bringing in Brett Farve. It was a big move, so they've tried everything first round picks. Trading for a quarterback and obviously the free agency, right. So George Payton, learning under Rick Spielman, and he was with Spielman at three different spots. He was with him with the Bears. He was with him in Miami, and he's been with him for Double digit years in Minnesota, so he saw everything. So I don't think that he's going to be afraid to pull the trigger and going a different route. A couple of those first round draft picks that the Vikings had on Lee got one year. I think the one that got the most was Teddy Bridgewater, and he got two years before he got hurt, then that was the end of that. So he's not afraid, if if it's not going the direction that he wants it to that he will go in a different direction. And I think if you have the opportunity to go out and get a top five quarterback that is what age 25 you do everything that you can. So that means three first round picks Andrew Luck. I'm definitely all in on that. And I even told you That I would even toss in Jerry Judy into that deal to sweeten it to make sure that that that can get done now granted, Let me just say this. I would try and get the deal done without throwing without Judy short, But here's my reasoning is toe why I would make him available in any particular deal. And obviously the shot. Watson has a no trade. So we could block coming to Denver, regardless of you offered the whole Bronco team for him, right, You know, But let's just say to Sean was interested in coming here, and I think he should be interested. Because if you look at the talent on this roster, it is young. And they're very talented. You have Courtland Sutton is the number one. And here's why I would give up. Jerry Judy in that scenario is because Tim Patrick to me last season showed me enough that he could be the number two number two wide receiver on this team. And you were gonna be successful with sudden and Patrick that you could say you don't have a burner out of those two, because I don't think anybody thinks of Of Courtland is a burner. But you did draft KJ handler who can stretch the football field, and I think he showed flashes of that last season. But Cortland sudden comes back healthy. And you have Tim Patrick in Cage, a handler, plus Noah fans. I mean really what you're really trying to do is just trying to measure the expense of someone and they put it down on the ground and you actually hear about guys actually doing hand exercises to stretch their hand as wide as possible although when you're grabbing a football you're actually going to measure from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the Pinky here and this is hard because this is a hard rule and you can't really get good accurate measuring you look tired type by just under nine right. Look I'll give you a non center's Oh that's attention and would have actually done something with my. I mean what's interesting when you watch the tape of Joe Borough? There are situations where people come from behind strip him when he's trying to move up in the pocket and run. I mean that's going to happen if you have nine if you have ten inches so I mean it's not a glaring obvious problem as far as him on the football field and that's why I think it's really. It's just going to be something that will hopefully wind up forgetting about certain the biggest thing is and you know this with all of these drills you know as well. Mike you go back to the tape and you're trying to find something after the fact that says okay. Now I'm going to look specifically at these things so you're gonNA look cold weather rain and then ball security and Joe Boroughs as good as any college quarterback you're ever going to see in the pocket in terms of two hands on the ball and protecting the ball. I saw him in two thousand eighteen the last weekend. In September against Ole Miss. You can go back and watch the tape. My suit was soaking wet when I did the open of that game. It was pouring rain driving rain in anyone who says it doesn't rain in Baton Rouge on a Saturday night is lying to you. Because it poured and he completed seventy two percent of his throws with three touchdowns and zero interceptions in that game. So you go back to the tape and you try to look at these things and what the tape tells you is. He's just fine. You know I had a theory here. I have an interesting experience with hand size so I was forced out in two thousand eight. We were we trade for Brett Farve and just as a fan of sport. I can't wait to go out to the first practice and watch Brett farve throw. There's nothing physically imposing about breath and he goes out there and he's throwing Abe I've ever seen and I ask them like what is the value. Where's this philosophy comes from it? He said you know what Mike I have long fingers and I actually couple of football the way a lot of people throw a softball. I could actually be over the top and that's where I get all my philosophy from just watching my practice. It was unbelievable to watch though. I know as Lewis show. There's a tradition of how we measure hands but finger. Length is actually an underrated aspect of playing quarterback so far so far small hands but long fingers and you know what my pinky and all the time strong throwing football pictures of the five. It's easily the least important finger in the hand and I can't remember it ever being a big factor. It's all there in the grip. The pinky to me doesn't matter. It's archaic. How we're measuring the quarterback's hand span now with that. Said there's thirty four quarterbacks in the last fourteen years who have been drafted that have had hands of nine inches and smaller and really only two of them had any sort of Sustained Success Ryan. Tannehill is one of them and Jared. Goff is the other. That's it so there are thirty two out of thirty four. Who have failed. But are we going to say that he's going to the Joe Boroughs? Not GonNa have success because his hands tells me that the reason for their failure wasn't because they were nine inches weight.

The Myth of Quarterback Hand Size
"So let's talk some measurements. That's what went down today. The consensus number one overall pick Joe. Pearls hand sized came in at nine inches. Listen to this. The last quarterback that man that small drafted first overall was jared. Goff BACK IN TWO THOUSAND SIXTEEN GUYS. So that's some comparison it's annual. Nfl tradition every year were introduced to the incoming class of rookie quarterbacks. And we're told that a single measurement matters hand size but what if the metric is totally meaningless as the NFL combine unfolds in Indianapolis we investigate the connection between big hands and big production and ask whether Scouts are chasing a myth. I mean it's Tuesday February twenty fifth this is espn daily presented by ADT. Dave I was very self-conscious reading this piece because I don't know if you know this about me but I have tiny tiny hands. I have gigantic cans. Do you See come on tiny baby hands. Dave Flemming is a senior writer for. Espn his report on the NFL's obsession with quarterback hand size publishes ESPN DOT com today. So Dave yesterday was a big day for the quarterback prospects at this year's combine the annual release of the hand size measurements and the annual freak out about said measurements. Well I mean. It's like a national scouting holiday when the the QB hand size measurements. Come out because there is the belief that the distance between a potential NFL quarterbacks tip of his pinky and the tip of his thumb directly correlates to their success in the NFL. That's why we care just to give people sort of a framework here. What what is the big hand? And what is this small hand in football world red flags and NFL SCOUTING? Go up if your hand is smaller than nine and a half inches. But the guys who are said to have hands the size of Catcher's Mitts are. That's generally anything above ten inches. The normal size of adult humans hand is like eight and a half inches eight eight eight point seven five inches right now. Everyone is listening to this. Podcast is looking at their hands if they're under STEERING WHEEL WONDERING DO. I have two small hands. I've never thought about it until this very moment. Well Yeah and I think that is also part of it right that it's a myth or a theory or a legend that are virility is directly connected to the size of our hands that basically goes back to the beginning of time so in that sense. It seems logical that that we care about. How big a quarterback's hands are. What is the origin of the belief in the NFL world? That big hands equals good quarterback as far as I could tell were really took off with with Brett farve scouts and just people in general trying to quantify any way they could why this guy who was sort of a washout in Atlanta would go to the freezing cold and ice elements inside Lambeau field and become a three time. Mvp I mean. I think that's just human nature and scouting in general right that it's like whoa something weird like this happens. We want to be able to quantify it honestly. I think the there were some packers personnel. Who sort of wanted to claim credit for basically knowing in advance that he would be great because of his hand size and then what happens is human nature takes over right and people are like well. That's that's gotta be true. Look at Brett Farr for Lou peyton manning or look at Russell Wilson drew brees. I mean their hands are huge. So therefore air go right. All good quarterbacks have to have big hands breezing. Wilson are interesting examples. Because those were quarterbacks who were not universally seen as being sure things? Yeah in cases like that especially with Russell Wilson. You've got a really influential scouting and personnel department in Seattle right. That is sort of the envy of the rest of the League. And what happens is they. They can't decide. They're worried about picking him so high mainly because of his height and then one of the things that pushes him over the edge in their minds is the fact that he's got huge hands. I think the bigger the hands the easier it is to grip the football and let it rip so for me this this pointer finger right near the tip of the football and let spent basically he should be like seven foot seven if you go proportionately of for how big his hands are so the seahawks based on this data get pushed over the edge. They're like okay. We're GonNa Take Russell Wilson and then retrospectively. It's like Oh look at that. How genius that was that. We went by his hand size. And then that sort of proliferates the myth through all these other kind of envious scouting department's and the same thing for debris. I mean he's a short guy but he's got huge hands data on S. U. Y. When did you as a reporter? Who's been covering football for a long time? I start to doubt the correlation between hand size and being good quarterback I was at years ago at Jamarcus Russell's pro day at at Lsu and it was not good and as he finished up his workout. I walked out with a GM and a coach that I respected and I was like what did you guys think. That was very good and they both were like. Yeah but did you see his hands? They were huge. I think the coach even said it's like he's got an extra knuckle and I was like what that doesn't make any sense right. He could barely connect with his wide receivers on these on routes where there was no defense and they walked out of there going. Yeah but his hands are so huge. He's a can't miss prospect and ever since then really it was kind of like we need to look into this because it doesn't make any sense there have been exhaustive studies including one we did at ESPN. That went back over the last ten graphs and compared quarterback hand size to fumble rate per game and then Qbr overall there is zero correlation between the size of a quarterback's hand and their performance in the NFL. Zero correlation if anything it was in reverse the GUYS WITH QUOTE UNQUOTE SMALLER. Hands fumbled at the same rate and had a higher qbr than quarterbacks with bigger hands. It's like I don't understand. It takes two seconds to look this up to see if there's any correlation and what happens is you look at the data and you go. Well what's going on it's laughable coaches say? Oh hand size is more important than how Tala quarterback is I've read quote unquote draft experts. Who are saying you know in some situations. The size of a quarterback's hand is more important than his arm strength. What and Yes yes. It's never ending. You make a really important point story beyond questioning you know. The connection hand size measurements themselves are not very reliable. This the more you look into this it just gets sillier and Sillier and the fact that between the senior bowl and the combine and then pro day workouts on college campuses. There's no universally accepted way to measure a hand so you could go to the combine and where there's a ruler tape to a desktop and you have to put your hand down and they measure the distance between your thumb and your pinky and that's your hand size and three weeks later at your pro day. They might ask you to just hold your hand up in the air and they would spread a tape measure between your pinky and your psalm. And and that's your hand size one. You can lean into and spread your hands out on a desk. The only thing wrong with the theory of quarterback hand size is that it's fundamentally flawed on every single level if grip strength is more important. Sounds like you think it is. Why don't teams measure that? I honestly that's the million dollar question right. I think that they think that. There's a correlation between size and strength of a grip that's like measuring a kickers foot size to try and predict how long his field goals will be. I think that they think they're measuring for hand strength. And they're not they're measuring hand size and those are two completely different things. "Is not to say that Mike McCarthy didn't deserve to be a head. Coach is not to say that he did a terrible job because he did it. He's proven to be a good coach. And it may very well be that he deserves to be someplace else. I'm certainly not gonna sit up here and say that Mike McCarthy doesn't deserve to be a head coach in the league as long as Jason Garrett, and Marvin Lewis is still head coaches in the league, I'm not gonna do that. I'm not gonna do that. Especially Marvin Lewis. These Jason gave wanna play off game is more than I can say for Marvin Lewis hasn't wanna play off game sixteen years, Mike McCarthy's a Super Bowl champion. I think that ultimately the indictment against Mike McCarthy is very very simple, ladies and gentlemen. When you are coaching. Arguably the greatest talent we have ever seen at the quarterback position in NFL history. You gotta have more than one Super Bowl championship in more than one Super Bowl appearance to show for it. You have to have that Mike because he didn't have that. You can't have Arron Rogers questioning the play calling. You can't have him chagrined over the personnel. That surrounding him ask why that's the biggest defense that I have for Mike McCarthy. He he isn't the only one that needs to needed to go. I think I don't have any problem with Mark Murphy, the presidency yo for the Green Bay Packers going. I mean, you don't wanna had Ted Thompson up in there as a GM before you put. We are talking about a man that's exceeded. What some would label top-five quarterback in NFL history who's passed over seventy thousand yards and Brett farve. And nobody would tell you that bradfo was better than that Rogers. That's how great Aaron Rodgers is. That's how great Aaron Rogers has been. And so guess what? If he's not feeling a coach, if he's not happy, or whatever the case may be you better pay attention.

"Brett farve came out in support of Mike McCarthy this week. Oh. La pressure on Aaron Rodgers earned. Unlike him Brett says he is an excellent coach that might hurt. The I think Mike is is an excellent coach they have to win. And I think when and hurry or something may happen there earns playing outstanding. And really keeping them in games. Another good for years. I'll be last physically Khalil Mack twice a year. Biking's defense twice a year. But Aaron's going to have an ice for years after this year.
