"Each breed you know that but it's not that's your guy man. No i mean aaron rodgers. They draft draft him after. They said you know we're one key changes spots with new coach and then they go thirteen in three and they were amazing. They draft a kid. Come on though. Marshall you know i don't disagree with you i don't disagree with you. Do not disagree with you but here. Here's what i'm saying just aaron rodgers. You were drafted late in the first round behind brett farr and guess what far did continue to play so now just doesn't fit you too and so you think part of week one had something to do with it. There's some residue i think. I i think the continuity of the team but togetherness listen we. We're we're all professionals. Some teams are better than most what. We're all professionals in you. Get at a high level where you got a green ban the saints playing early. Everybody got together and that didn't look like a together that like a team of together. Marshall faulk here on the rich eisen show pro football hall of famer. Let's talk about the rams. Bud boy was that first game for stafford. Exactly what the hype was all about. Is that where we're going to see. Think over the next seventeen weeks. I hope so man. I listened rich and i. I'm i'm on record. I want people to know. Yes i was not. I was not looked at. But i'm like okay if the detroit or his dad. But i don't know but sean is another one of those guys that you put you. I mean he put a wolf we the game against seattle. It would wolford. I mean doing awesome plays. He could dial up and and what they did. All that was that was beautiful. That was masterful. I just i sent. I sent techs right to look man that that was fun watching office. Football game looked on and Rams have all the answers to the bears. Were doing out there. Defensively and the bears. They know sloshing nine. Oh no slouch on defense. So they're the that's indicative of what we're gonna see you think There's no there's no cheese right there that we're going to actually see the she with the name. They have to dedicate a little bit more time to run me because you can't you can't run play action and not run the ball. I'm still trying to figure out. Why the linebackers in the sixties were by when rams couldn't run the ball just you know is this is i. I don't understand it but at some point in time you have to run the football. I'm sure they know that and When that dynamic is added in This team they're going to. They're going to be tough man. So who intimately offensively awesome died. But you couldn't tell lost that so who's the best team in the nfc west. Marshall what do you think. that's a tough one. That's a tough one right now It's skipped i. I can't really kick it. Like i want to say the rams but seattle look good arizona. Look good even the forty niners but the musical quarterbacks they look good i just. It's it's hard to say rich. i'm not going to put it out there Actually you know what i'm gonna go home. Go home with the rams. Do an and nobody can say anything to me about it. I'm gonna say the rams. That's what i'm saying. Because they were expected to and you know what they had to do they had the whole serve the other three teams in the west one and sunday night. They had to go out there against the bears and hold serve marshall faulk pro football hall of famer here on the rich eisen show. What do you think is going on with matt nagy and his decision making with fields and is it a film room thing. We're not talking about as he seeing a line. Why wouldn't he just throw this kid. In the deep end of the pool again you had a front row seat of peyton manning being thrown in the deep end of the pool and knowing how somebody can take lumps and get better and how. We're seeing herbert near to and and what last year obviously meant for him To a year to what do you think is going on with with the bears decision making. There's a part of me. I wanna speculate like i know about play but but i'm not in their locker room rates. But here's what i do know. Yes because because we saw this He has to understand Hey matt nagy. i know. You're probably being coy about it. But you liar when it comes to this stuff because you told us. Nick foles and mitch trubisky. You did before you did this before. The people don't understand we saw this just last year. We mitch trubisky. He's done this before and he stood at the podium mississippi exact same thing and now we have two different quarterback and he's doing the exact same theme at some point in time. Somebody gotta take. You're lying not what. Now you don't know who can run your off and best or you can't run an offense that's best for quarterback that you have that that that's how i look at rich. I just the kid feels when he is on the field. They team looks dynamic. Everybody is like they stand up a little taller. It's just a different dynamic. And if he can't see that as a head coach and the play caller even trouble. But it's what that's why i'm asking. What do you think it is. And that's why you gave the caveat of of you're not there right. So what do you think it could possibly be. That he is shown some sort of Inability to protect himself. Because he he's he's not seeing the will and our off or what. What do you think is. Here's what was that you know. I'm i'm i'm listening. I'm listening to college talk. Meh here's what college what's hip because probably works crystal. Ask all the questions. And here's lucy alluded to now. The one thing that any dave was there often. The offense line is not that good so what he's doing this. It's a lot of quick games and you. You have to be in order to run quick game consistently consistently And be good at it. You have to be a little season your pre step. We've gotta the on. You gotta know where you're going with. The ball and andy did a pretty good job at that. He got the ball on his hands staff. But as you continue to play you gotta standing there and make those You have to be dynamic and buy some time to get out of the pocket and andy. Andy doesn't bring to the table. Chris collins said that in the preseason justin field held a ball the longest quarterback.

"Here's your host Zach Gilb Eye on Football Week one of the 2020 NFL season only one game in play right now. And this was a rematch of the divisional round from a year ago, where the Chiefs had a very close victory against the Cleveland Browns, and they advance to the championship game before Going on to the Super Bowl and where they did lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Baker Mayfield just converted a first in 10. The Browns, once led by 12 no longer have the lead 33 to 29 Chiefs on top. Of the Browns and Jody Baker Mayfield looking for that contract extension, you go earn it here. If you lead the Browns down the fielding and go score a touchdown and win the game. They just showed a nice shot of Pat Mahomes standing on the sideline, and he's trying to and in through all the fans to give it up and tear and screaming. Yeah, you know this is killing him. He is Mr Put the ball in my hands, and when you're standing on the sideline, and the other team's quarterback is driving down the field for the potential, go ahead, score that nothing you can do about it. Yep. So my homes is probably hoping that they either get a turnover here and quick Brown score so he can get back out there and decide the game with the ball in his hands, and there's an interception just thrown by made by Baker Mayfield. He had some pressure. He rolled out and he threw the ball rushed it a little bit. How did l? Well, there's one time out that he had left. So, Yeah, I can understand why I didn't want to get hit and bounds. But he did throw that football up in the air and like we were talking about earlier, Jodi even when it looks really good for Cleveland, any team up against Kansas City? The Chiefs are never dead into the clock says it's zero. Anger mentioned a guy who might be a little bit before your time. I know you're a good student of the game. So you know what I'm talking about, but you might not have ever actually seen him play. He was the quarterback that came prior to Brett Farr came before Aaron Rodgers. Don Makowski, whose nickname was smart wisely enough. The magic man. Older Magic man plays in Kansas City. His name is Patrick Mahomes, because what he can do with the football and the deficits that he can just immediately sliced when he gets his hands on the football is just remarkable, and he is so far and away the most talented quarterback in the game. I know Brady is the greatest of all time because of what he did over the course of his career, But you just looking at talent level in the National Football League, There's Patrick Mahomes, and then as everybody else, I'm the biggest Brady fan. There is the best. Quarterback in football right now is Patrick Mahomes. That does not mean that Brady is no longer the greatest quarterback of all time. He obviously is. And he had the last laugh last year in the Super Bowl..

"Feast as well and the defense. The defense and can't not emphasized enough can't not that's double negative. You can't emphasize enough. How important is that mike. Tomlin head coach this football team and the are going to be to go. We'll see what happens. Josh sounds really really happen. And also tj should have some fresh legs just doing like the individual portions training camp and doing stuff on the side that might feel pretty pretty good coming into this game. They talked about. He might be on a pitch count this weekend because he hasn't done a lot of teams outside outside all the time that happens. Yeah i agree. anything on that one. Nah i'm not touching. Just throw the ball. Who cares teaching me to stop the run today. Just put them in on passed ball and the best part about it is. the bills. Didn't really run it all last year. And he's got a great group receivers to and to that point game as strong as other teams josh allens lost one five to score a touchdown i do raleigh. Yeah say what is his rushing over under do we know. I assume it's probably like twenty six or something might be tasty as well one rush for out. We'll put sacks ticket away. From though right. I think so i you take away from your overall rushing yards twenty. Two hundred quarterback takes twenty yards of sax. It's one eighty. It does but it's not it does not take away from his personal. Oh it does okay. Good so his over understood. I don't know if we're running back. It's behind the line at they. Take it away. I know. I know. But i think so and i said this yesterday. Actually like taking quarterback's rushing totals over when they're playing a good defensive line because if they're playing a bad defensive line there's sitting pocket all day and throw but if they're flushed out a bunch then there's a chance that you know he will have to run. He's a great athlete. We see josh josh allen. You talk about a superstar that dude. Every he's playing doing he does. You'll brett farve check where he runs in front of people who actually there's ball coming brett farr did that everyday in practice down to in that like in getting guys to see him dance with his teammates like he seems like they absolutely found their guy honestly so the bills kind of remind me of the steelers win. Ben came into the league. Because we've ben came in the league. They had a great defense. And then then they kind of let ben grow and he got better and better. Obviously josh allen kind of this very very similar thing like he came in the bills at a great defense and now he's just continuing to grow as a quarterback The next game is jets at panthers. Jets are plus three and a half panthers minus three and a half over under forty four and a half. I said that. I need to see these teams play football before i do anything here. Aj i mean to new starting quarterbacks for both teams i saw crowder is out for the jet. Yeah that's one less weapon for wilson to throw to this games a toss up for me. I don't know. I have no idea. What the panthers are and so in the jets are should be better but how much i don't know they were dead last in the league in offense last year. So there's there's you would think that you would think with the floor coming in. They might be a little better there. But i'm going to need to see these teams play. Yeah i'm taking the panthers off the revenge game in fact that's my second season. Also robbie anderson bobby anderson possible and seventy to score touchdowns i like the panthers. Cj moseley plan for the jazz. Yes that's going to help. But still look at their secondary yeah. Six rounders and their secondary mccaffrey's backed rule second year. I know zach. Wilson could be good but the jets team is bad. Agr revenge game the thing for players. I think so. Yeah players absolutely. I don't know how much for like sam darnold. It will be especially since the new staff and everything or at least coaching staff It's a thing. Yeah but sometimes it can become a thing to where it's a detriment to players all they care all mammo. I'm gonna prove these guys wrong. Like i'm gonna show him there. They should have got rid of me. And then you go out there. And you're overthrowing people and doing stuff that you normally don't do this year. I think we find out. If sam darnold is ryan tannehill or. He's just not a good quarterback because of out of gas and going to joe brady was incredible and college. I assume his offense will translate into the nfl and did a little bit last year. So i think we'll find out about sam darnold this year. I want to see. Sam both those quarterbacks play. That's what makes it an intriguing game that that jets panther's game with normal. You wouldn't if you're not a jets or panthers fan. You wouldn't really care to tune into much. I actually absolutely want to see this correct. The next one is actually the most lopsided betting game of the season so far of the weekend jags or minus three going to houston over under forty five and a half. The jags are getting eighty percent of the bats and they have ninety. Five percent of the money are on the jags. An urban and trevor lawrence. This weekend. I thought their preseason performance may prevent this from happening it has not the people are just very very down on the texans. How do you feel it well. The quarterback situation sure. But i guess when you look at what they did in the off season. They made some good moves. They brought some guys in that they needed to so i think people may be sleeping on him a little bit just because of everything happen. I'm not saying they're going to be a great team. But i think they could very well beat the jaguars. Personally i like houston. Yeah absolutely like money. Midst back there on houston money. Let short oh. Yeah houston line. Here was a tough one forty last night. You think the cowboys we're gonna pull through. Yeah i actually got my heart fucking broke and go forward on that fourth and six. I just knew you're giving brady the ball with a minute. And change. I ask to do is get a field goal. You're fucked. I think a lot of people felt that has returned. yeah. I'm also going to take us because that's mostly because of how much money's coming in on the jags foods like damn near last night. Everyone's out there on the road with a a reward road with a rookie head coach. Nfl houston's got a pretty rowdy fan base as you. i don't know if you can speak on that if you put in houston and also to. They'll still show up tara chelsea slots. Yeah this will show up. It's been so long there have been able to go to the stadium. They'll definitely be there. And i don't know if you saw those aj but there were a few people who ranked coaches on the hottest seat in his first game ever. People were putting coach. Dave as the hottest seat in the nfl him already fighting for his life as a head coach in the nfl. So i will take the texans and you know. I probably will be sitting here on monday. Saying hey i was wrong i i. Shouldn't i should stay away but we'll see coach. Those boys mark ingram to who knows. I mean just feels like mark. Anger might be able to david. Johnson's still there. Has anyone ever stepped into a tougher job. But then coach dave with the houston texas year while after. They hired him. They told him that he was just keeping the seat. Warm for josh mccown. Probably didn't hell. Yeah i would say. Nobody has ever been in a worse situation. I guess it's expectations. You know managing expectations. No one expects anything they don't people don't like you said they're saying he's on the hot seat and he has a costa game yet. Okay i'd say that you win a few games. you may open some eyeballs. I think the best part for him is a lot of people. Just blame easterby and mcnair mcnair. A bad thing too is if anyone could you. If you polled one million americans how many of them could tell you. The head coach of the houston texans right. They're all seven main and you just let them about user be though yes example and you just said. Aj like if they win. A couple of games. I who knows but like what is a successful season. Would you say for the texans. Like four four. Yeah i mean. I would say six but you have a hard time feeling. Good about six wins. Maybe if you knock off a few really good teams late in the year then you can at least take some of that momentum into the off season but yes it's going to be an uphill battle for those guys is. It is four tyrod to poor time. He's he's going to get the start he's gonna start his team Interesting very very interesting game cardinals at titans titans or minus three at home. Obviously they had polio..

"Seattle again under ten. Y- repeat that one more time so fast had a very interesting Mathematical proof actually that the buys towards the overs. This year was stronger than ever in the pricing. Yes eight point. Six was the average that was being dealt by the bookmakers. If you come composite average of all thirty two teams eight and a half would be the average with seventeen game and no ties. No it won't no certain ties right but yeah ties loss effectively. Exactly okay because it's not a win. And you speculated that plane unders was vague free and paying over twenty. Yes you think. Dr arnn was approximately right. I factor in the ties. It's even slightly higher than that. Okay so you think if you went right now and shopped at five out. You had five outs and played the best number everyone mechanically the best under. You could get on every team. You're positively yes. By how much. Mitch smith smitty witchy all right. I can accept that okay but if you played the nfc teams under. I think you're even better because the nfc has nine road games. And i don't feel that's being properly accounted for and all the strength of schedule number all right. Well let's as one of our friends would say delta so we're doing our best bats and remember. This sound is the sound of conflict. How do we resolve conflict here with cash code. Hard cash hoping it was fisticuffs. It was funny on well. Yeah it was funny on Straight out of vegas today. Aj was bragging the bet against me on seattle. And and i what was the numbers and we ended up having even money. I san francisco seattle. So i got like just fifty cents. Nobody did a podcast was lost. Oh i don't know that even count so so. After he admitted to it he paid down a lot. And i just said that's the way you do it kid. 'cause i'm trying to teach young. They'll tell you don't tell you steal. Candy from from babies r j if given a favorable option. Oh y'all let me help you out. Listen here's the beauty of it. Forced bats here fours beds. If there's disagreements we all pick five games now we are in the super contest again. Well we haven't signed. But we will. And i don't know how to deadling saturday. We're whenever the entry deadline wonder friday. Yeah but here's the thing. I don't you know it's funny. I had mark. Do the work on this key favor. Tom can you email market. did you get on him. Sending me that print everything. He sat me out. I we got where you are in the three year I think someone's ahead of because i register first sentence but i get him on the team. Oh see we're not like kevin durant. I wanna find a way to slowly lead poisoning. Okay don't really but if there was a kind of lead poisoning didn't affect you long-term boca right. We just kill them. Voice message week. When ain't this corner gave the west gate. There's the deadlines two hours later than what we published overlay. That's interesting okay. So we're going to tell you when i do get that but We've been amazing. I mean i don't know how to say winning. Every year i think fifty six percent or fifty seven was our lowest year. Picking five mother athen games a week. Yeah exploit some sale lines. Yes we do but let me ask you as as the only two time super contest. Champion walking the earth tour two or the only one that's ever been born because his dad guy is. Would you rather be able to shop lines entire week. Reasonably rogue rogue lines. Is it easier to hit fifty six percent and the super contest. But you're forced to pick five or is it easier to hit it. In real life. Real trade could play early in the week. Real life is easier. Yes okay now if you don't play overnights if you start monday morning. I'm gonna put monday at noon as the cutoff point afternoon. If it's after on monday. I'd rather get the play the still numbers on wednesday. Yes because the trade off is on one. You've got a set number like there's a game here this week. We would love if we could get three and a half. it was three and a half a week What was that game is. That was the falcons eagles eagles corner gay. And let's give them credit. I hate it. They know they have a great fuel. Where numbers are moving and they will play. Perspective moves and all the time. They're almost right every time on the direction. Not the winner laws right. I heard a podcast actually just compare and contrast and the podcast or gave him credit said. Well it's pretty much known that the west gate look at lines are sharp than anybody else's stale look headlines because the skews that they have tend to be play out that that's the actual line moves a good forecast of them regarding it being easier when you bet earlier. We'll just last week if you turned into the dream pod rj. And i gave you new england minus one week. Three hosting the saints without line is three and rising so shows those look at headlines in those early bets you can get value that you're never gonna get that big of a value betting the week of the game. Am i reading. That we're number two is how you said. Text him did you look at. He'd say oh. I don't know how would i know me. I saw the same thing. Let's confirm though it looks like some dude named brett farr four four four one game ahead of son of a bitch and the amazing thing is third place. Four games behind so in the entire planet. There's there's two up tob were sagging and that's it then. It was like games and games in games than someone else. And let's be honest guys. Let's be honest with ourselves if you're a sharp. Aren't you playing the biggest contests in the world mill yet. The five thousand is the biggest. That i'm always or any bigger than you know about phase. No so we're in the biggest nfl contests in the world. It's gone for three years. We've batted three. We've been in three years and of everyone in the world. We were the second best and one game back. You're not brett farve going down. Maybe he'll get cancelled. Sin and dick pic sir to to some female report or something really brad hobby you think if it was i'd be ready. I that's pretty impressive. And steve oh. I don't i can't imagine how couldn't be more impressive especially because by week one. We're going to be number one number two to running all time told what happens if one of the other. Hundreds of people played at various points in this context. Get on a streak. That's mckenzie's job to track that. No i don't think he's going to count it one last thing. I got my year to year so fast calculators out every every year so here we go all right so last year we were forty four and thirty six and by the way i finished i. We were two weeks left. We were five hundred. Os good and i said at unacceptable. I think we're nine and the turbo boost. You say. I said. I'm gonna get serious. Fifty five percent forty four. Thirty six right okay. Next one forty five and thirty seven cheese is just like fifty five percent okay and then forty eight and thirty two at sixty seven percent sixty seven sixty percent. Okay yeah so add it all up..

One of the best quarterbacks generation one of the top quarterbacks of all time hall of famer blah blah blah matt jones is going to be too Mack jones andrew luck to what peyton manning was to tom. Brady now. andrew luck. Believe i truly believe andrew luck was going to be on his way to of being a great quarterback but he was with a bad organization so this was a situation where. Hey man you go from peyton manning to andrew lucked peyton manning. The colts think out loud. They get the number one pick and everybody's talking about being. How fucking lucky can you be the one year that peyton manning no longer can player to one year that peyton manning is out happens to be the year that andrew luck is going to be available in the nfl draft so the one time that the colts stink out loud. The peyton manning era is the time where they get an opportunity to transition from one generational great hall of fame quarterback to potentially the next one and andrew luck again injuries. But it seems like Kyle suggesting there's a chance that he makes. You know, I don't Larry, I don't think nowadays there's anything wrong with that. You remember the wildcat of years ago, But the Saints had pretty good success with Taysom Hill even even withdrew Greece you know, Hall of Famers or quarterback. So Uh, to have a package A series or two. Maybe a corn in the Red zone may be short yardage. Maybe, you know it's no huddle. I think there's two things that you want to accomplish one You're going to allow Yourselves to catch the defense, you know, unprepared because you're not going to see it at least early on film, so they're not going to really know what's going on. I'm sure that they are aware that he could be in there, but they're not going to be specifically prepared for any specific place and also you you want to keep tray engaged, right. You don't want to just sitting on the bench, holding the clipboard for three or four or five games, or whatever that is, or the whole season, If Jimmy's Roland So I think you get a double bonus out of that. So I think it would be smart to do that. The Saints did do that with Taysom Hill. Now now trace not catching passes out of the backfield. Or, you know, trying to score from the one. Um, but I think by and large, you want him. Engaged and let him know that he is going to be a part of this thing, too. And I mean, let's face it once once he has picked Jimmy Jimmy knew the score. I mean, it's the gym is not a dumb guy. I feel like that's a Seinfeld. Jimmy is not a dumb guy. Jimmy, like the lane should be like the way it's our first conversation of the football season with Brett Jones. He's back with us, and we're already having a good time here in the Tolbert Kruger. And Brooke show. Where are you on a rookie quarterbacks. Should they get in and play and learn that way, or or sit and watch it observed. Learn that way. Are you a fan of maybe mixing those two and has your opinion about that changed? Since we started talking about Trey, Lance and what we're what we're seeing right now. So Rod, it's funny because over the years my opinion has changed, And it's kind of evolved from used to not be a thing. I mean, Marino is really the only guy that ever pulled it off in my generation. And subsequently you know, you draft these kids, you pay them so much money, and some of them had Ridiculous talent, especially the the door threat. Quarterbacks where, you know Hey, if things are breaking down, they can run. Um it's a huge advantage. Uh, But I go back to you know the early year comments about driving the Ferrari? I mean, your this is a Potential Super Bowl contender, Super Bowl team and and very few Super Bowl teams win with the rookie quarterback. And so if you have this quality of team you've got to Kind of be a little bit more careful and play it down the line. Now, if you're not driving a Ferrari, if you're driving a Ford escort, if you're the Detroit Lions or whether, Yeah, you know, let the To let the rookie first rounder play. Now I know they don't have a rookie first rounder, but that's that's kind of my thing is, Hey, there's nothing to lose. I remember watching Peyton Manning as a rookie play at the Colts and And they were horrible and he Got the snot beat out of them. I mean, in some guy's never recover for that from that beating, to be honest with you. I think David Carr from the Texans never recovered, but one example. 67 times the first year did some of those games saw just beat down, worn down, lose your confidence. Every time you go back to past, you're going to get pummeled, and then you just start see him goes. I mean, that's just that's just the way it is. It didn't happen with Peyton, but I think he got his job broke as a rookie. Um, it was It was nasty. It was ugly to watch, but he stood in there and it didn't affect him going forward, But You've got to be careful. You don't want to damage your your high round pick and so Don't think we're gonna have the same situation with Trey, but you also want the experience. You also got to think you know, come that time of the year playoff friendly. You know, the the whole thing's ramped up to a different level and Going back How many rookies have have taken a team and won a Super Bowl? It's just It's a tough thing to do. So I think balance is probably our our best approach at least early on and kind of see how that goes. All years playing football who through the hardest ball. May have. That's a great You know what Right back up, right? Who Right for Brett Farr. I mean, if you're asking me, Jones, Steve, I mean, heck, I do it harder than those two. You know, Cheese. Go, boy. I can't wait to bring that. So was that the pro probe at a Pro bowl? Yes, And I don't know if I've ever told the story. But it was like my, uh, my second or third year Brett Farr was an alternate..

"He was fifty fifty on retiring the weekend before training camp. Now it's one thing to think it. It's another thing to say it. Would you say something like that when you were playing. You know what i thought about hanging it up but now i'm coming back for another year where we had another green bay quarterback to sit out a few times to brett farr so I don't know if he was saying that only because he he was maybe looking at retiring as a strategy for his co. getting out of his contract or whether he was really thinking about walking away from football if he was really thinking about walking away from football. That's serious because once you start thinking you're want to retire You're not going to be all in and you better be all in this sport Where you get your your head knocked off so I hope it was only because he was saying that as a strategy or thinking that as a strategy of what he was going to try and use maybe to get out of his deal not the fact that he actually was ready to leave. The game should should cowboy fans be concerned about dak. Prescott had the gruesome injury last year. Now has a shoulder situation would probably not going to see them in the preseason or or is this just you know precautionary measures and they're just going to wait until the season start. I think they should be concerned because he has been away from the game since week. Five of last year. So he's kinda rusty he has he just hasn't played any games. And now you're gonna try. Maybe bringing back having had no No time in a real game. Even though he is a veteran you still like to be able to play a little bit in a preseason game just to get the feel of of what it's like to go out for pre game warm up to get yourself dressed All the different pageantry that goes on before regular football game. I know i love playing in the preseason. I didn't have to play a lot. But i like going through the process of going through a game because just got ready for when the real real bullets started flying so i if if he doesn't play at all during the preseason we're going to see him game one and they start out against the tampa. Bay buccaneers. you don't want to go out to your first game against one of the best defense in the league and having having played in over a year..

"To have babies from in that isn't of the stature of say manning or a trevor lawrence orrin pandrew out on this one but you know what. I'm sure you guys will figure out a way. That does defy house zach wilson as yet. So i'm gonna talk look. There is lavar something in me. that is just Against believe jets quarterbacks. I can't help because not says joe neighbors. Have they drafted a quarterback. Who's really done anything. Quarterbacks who've been for them brett farr vinnie. Testa verdy were veterans. Who went there after playing elsewhere. So it's hard to believe in a jets young quarterback. We've sam darnold. Everybody was in love with say we saw how that worked out. All that said. I'm going to step out on. The limb are going to take the risk. I'm going to live dangerously. In our. I like is army can throw the deep ball he's aggressive. I think he's accurate. They're gonna take their lumps this year. But i think over time that will soon will become near good. Solid franchise quarterback joy. I'm in i'm out. I'm out. I if i had to pick someone. That was going to be a bus in the draft. That would have been wilson. I'm not saying he's going to be but if you're making me choose one. Here's the problem. One the jets are not good. That's why they were able to take zach wilson. In the first place to your point traditionally it becomes very difficult very quickly. Four jets quarterback. Now the one thing i do like about what coach robert solid did here. Is he lowered. Expectations hanford the media. This is new york city right not a very patients a place when it comes to football. And they're ready to eat him alive. So let's just temper expectations possess rookie quarterback. Who's coming into the big city to take over. One is not a good roster. Now has a new head coach. Things are going to be rough for the jets this year. I think we can all safely anticipate that. So i don't think this is the evaluation year for what zach wilson. Who's gonna be to give him a couple of years. But overall i get the messaging. And what roberts was doing very crafty and it's very smart and it's very it's very honest as well. He is going to struggle this year. Because the roster's not great and it's hard for rookies anyway. But i am not. I have not a big buyer. Undock wilson to begin with. Wow what a couple of killjoys all right. Let's stay in new york Talk penn state's. Own saquon glenn barclay. He was back backing giant practice yesterday. For the first time after knee surgery he talked to afterwards about taking the next step. Take a listen this one more step of the journey back so Like i said just the best part of this to be out their teammates and just they have the practice. You know of a little bit. Whatever i can do to get out there. Just do what i love is important. I mean look as it keep green light and saquon to do more and more do more. I always say look. I'm not the doctor. I'm listening their guide and say the ones hands on with his rehab where they allow us to do. We will so which see from him. These first few days there'd be mostly individual teach periods. We're not complaining. Eleven on eleven or seven on seven at this point right now as we keep building him up really kind of start to you know get his body into the volume of practice the pace of practice of the players out there you know more football drills that'd be benefits him has gone four. There's only so much you can do at a certain point with the trainers and strength coaches on on field by yourself. It's time to get them moving forward and As long as they say it's safe for him to do go and keep on pushing already know lavar answer but i i'll pose the question anyway. Are you in or out or saquon. Barkley still being lea running. Back mr penn. State and tablet i n n n look squaws. Say he's still a league running back in come on. There's only he's only going into his third season. You get an injury like that at this point time and they are. They are way more easy. I won't say easier can come back from acl entries. You can come back from the injury relatively easy in this day and age where medicine technology has gone. There's no reason to think or assume that he's in the twilight of his career. Short shelf life is three years for running back. But let's be real here. Saquon barkley is easily even on hap- allegra. You know when when he has injuries seen plate with a messed up ankle during the season and he was still better than pretty much every player. That was out there on the field. Dude is special. the dude is elite. Like not just because it's a we are thing but for the simple fact that he actually really is that.

"It just leave. It'd be like what's wrong with these people. So yeah we know you all right. So roger shows up and The packers gave some concessions. Apparently this is the last dance. Which i take offense to. 'cause i didn't see six championship nor the greatest player of all time playing in green bay. But that's adorable. that's fine. i guess it's a slight Tip of the captain. Mj company but very much pat ourselves on the back. And tell you that. The reason why he wasn't Stack in the boxes the brilliance that we brought to the table knowing exactly where this is going to end. I actually am not a big pat on the bagai but we stayed full when this first started back around the draft. We both sat here and we're like he's not getting traded. This is insane. They're not going to trade him. he's gonna end up being back at camp. This this is going to go. We both talked about. Hey when we show up a can't we don't know that kind of remains to be seen but he's gonna play for the packers. He's not getting traded not retiring and all that he's not he's not retiring aiding get traded. Now here are the concessions. He the packers lopped off the last year of his contract on the surface like. Why does that help him. Well it helps him because now he's only signed through this year next if the packers know that they're not gonna be able to retain him they're not gonna just lose him for a compensatory pick so it behooves them to move on they also reportedly told him. Hey look we'll trade you to where you wanna go. They've agreed that they would not use any kind of a franchise tag or transition tag. Essentially they they made the deal that you're coming back for this year and then we'll move on that is ultimately where these things right. And okay you could follow the path of breath. Brett farr and end up in minnesota. They might need a quarterback after this year or A million other places. I'm sure that will be interested in aaron rodgers but not only. Do we tell you that he wasn't going to be traded. We took you inside the mind of aaron rodgers and then he would come to his senses and realize that what's best for him to be in a green bay packer uniform. There is nothing in his life. That's going to give him more joy waterfalls beaches whatever then playing in a seventeen season in the green and gold and we also. I like to think we didn't get completely all the way there but we definitely did bring up that look. You're the packers and the errands done this much for you. Don't you at least consider okay. You're right that's fine. We appreciate everything you've done. We'll make this better for you. We did try to get george lobbed at some point. We're going to have to move on we. Will you know basically give you some concessions. I i said listen if you if you really believe that then trade him which wasn't exactly what happened but this that's what they did. They they came and said okay. Earn all good. Let's say face. Let's have one more season in the sun and then you'll sail on often it'll be probably messy but a little bit less messy than it would have been right now. You're the packers. This played out fine for you. You get another shot at wondering at the end of the year you will trade him..

"To like does that make sense. You want it now you know what right they get to take the young quarterback they get to groom the young quarterback and keep the mvp the league on the same team. You you want your to eat it too. Yes so they get to do that as an organization and that just to me seems like a huge win by green bay and i know that shefty continues to bring up the point. He gets to determine where he plays next year. So what happens if he goes to them. And said i want to go play minnesota. I wanna go play with those two receivers like the packers get a division. How does he actually get no. I think dan there's going to be certain. Stipulations about certain places. Not gonna be able to go. I don't believe that ultimately he's going to be allowed to go play or choose a team in the nfc north. not that. that's going to happen. I think that there'll be a certain understanding. And my guess would be. That will probably be dill data conference in the end. If that's what he wants look again. he's not gonna have a hundred percent say but he's going to be able to dictate where he gets to play in two thousand twenty two. That's the point it's that little nebulous. I understand orlowski is questions like either you have. Contracts are pretty simple at the end of the day. Mike t right. And you've you've made your life in them. They either say it or they don't like either either. You can go wherever you want to go or we still have some control over the situation and the devil is always in the details so until we see the details. This will be fascinating to see wetlands. That's exactly right. And ironically if we go back to two thousand eight as rob alluded to at the jets we were able to get brett farr because as much as brett farve in the packers were at loggerheads and ironically it was about getting at rogers on the field from the packer standpoint they were docking to tree brett. Farve to the nfc and that's one of the reasons we were able to get. Brett convince them to come to the jets was that he didn't want to be there. They didn't want them there anymore. But there was no way they were going to trade him to a team in the and we were able to take advantage of that opportunity so as much as they're upset with each other they're going to have to work together next off season hype fascinating again shefty continuing to work the phones. We'll get all the details as this thing comes in the meantime training camps all over the nfl are opening today. And so let's look.

"God bless you pro football reference. I've always loved you. And i love your friends over a pro baseball reference. Basketball reference pro. Basketball reference does great work as well. I'm sure there's a pro hockey reference in a pro. This reference pro that reference but for me pro football reference is a bible if you cover this sport or just love the sport because it has a detailed history an incredible statistical breakdowns and all sorts of history connected to our league and with that in mind. Did you know that the nfl only sanctioned the sack is an official statistic in nineteen eighty two. That always seems so strange to me. Nineteen eighty two. I i was gonna make a joke. But he's not here. I was going to say he was graduating college that year. But he's not here to get upset about it but said anyway anyway. Nineteen eighty two which is crazy because nfl has been played for over one hundred years And even crazier the. Nfl has the ability if they so desire to go back much further than nineteen eighty two and actually figure out the accurate statistics sac which is one of the most popular stats. There is maybe the most popular staff there is on the defensive side of the ball so what pro football reference did is they went back to nineteen sixty and came up with their own unofficial totals for saks. Guess what michael strahan. The record no mall. Mikey bastardize record the one that you took from new york jetstar marquess no when you conspired with brett farr who slid at your feet in a meaningless week seventeen game twenty years ago to steal the sack record. Well guess what for the people that are in the know. That doesn't matter anymore. The sack record now belongs to the immortal al-bakker rookie season with the detroit. Lions in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight had twenty three sacks and now joining us on the around. The nfl podcast. Nobody knew nobody knew. Al baker in the biggest of all spots al first of all. Welcome to the around. The nfl podcast. No congratulations on being the official sec. Champion for all time in the nfl. At least according to the people that know what the hell. They're talking about al-bakker baby. Hey man thank you guys. Thank you for having me on man. You must've been Where were you when you found this news out. And like what was your. What was your reaction finding this news out now. I don't have the unofficial king. I meditate on my patio under the condo on the tenth floor out sitting out there and i never checked my emails or my texts until ten for some reason today i saw three one number and i thought it was a guy doing a script. I'm writing a script for a legal drama series that i don't during kobe. One of those things we all do turn out of creating a script and so i thought this was the guy that i've been working with because he's in los angeles. I opened it up. And i thought okay all right and then for some reason and i'm not kidding you without any prompting tears running down my eyes. My wife was inside that. Open up the patio doing my wife. I think he said what's wrong. I said nothing's wrong exit. Come look at this and we hugged. And then i lost about an hour and a half two hours it just my daughter called. It was really emotional for my family. You know i guess at six point. Eight two hundred ninety pounds. That doesn't sound really tough but we were all crying. Like little girls tells you you're the leader. And what are you. do you start crying. And it's because none of us really sat around like some players and we want this. We want that we hadn't thought about for at least at least i'm not kidding. Twenty years you know been twenty. Nobody says anything after ten years getting elected a couple of times No an honorable mention to hall of fame. He's just assume. And you've said to yourself move on you know. And that's what i did. I just went on with my life. I've i've not the only conversations that i would have was when people would come up to me and they would say they talked about michael strahan's twenty second and a half sack. Dow is a problem for me. The way that went out. That was because michael had a great year and to to see that it had nothing to do with my twenty three just to do well. Why does he need to do that. You know now now is in my opinion and that bothered me. Did you did it as a rookie. Nfl defensive rookie of the year. How disappointing was it. That's the sacks. Were not even tabulated until four years into your career because in addition to it costing you some level of notoriety and maybe even the hall of fame financially. I'm sure it had an impact as well. Because guys that sack quarterbacks get paid in the league and it wasn't recognized the way it is now so he kind of miss the boat there so a lot of ways. I'm so happy to hear. First of all how happy you are about it but also do you look back with some regret about the way this all played out but the status the timing of it all i believe in being honest and i think at that point twenty twenty years old all of a sudden all this is going on. I am so relieved that i didn't get the kind of money that these guys got. Then because i was an idiot like all other twenty year everytime you think about a young man at the age of twenty twenty one and the nfl gets in trouble. That's a baby her baby and if you remember the song you guys are too young. There was a song by david. Bowie call fame. I am just blessed to be able to say to you guys. I survived being famous. That's that and the thing that i'm most proud i've been there. I've done that. I've seen what it does to some people and an example. I saw player maybe about five years ago. His roster bonus was more than i've made in my thirteen years i'd learn. I don't want to mention his name. At the time he was at the peak. He deserves a new contract but he's been hurt. If if that were me. When i was twinning i might have bought myself a rocket ship. Who knows i was just listening. You know your base you. You just got out of college. You don't know how to. How do you figure out who your friends are. How do you figure out when your family's calling you and asking for money. I mean these are the real things that happened. Because then you're rich and i gotta tell you guys. My rookie. contract is twenty. Five thousand twenty five thousand dollar bonus twenty seven five thirty thirty two and thirty thousand dollars and that was a problem because i signed it and the lions were not going to extend it or change it. You only thing i could do. Make them trays. That happened no matter. How much of this of the defensive leader that was the way the game was back and your final season in detroit was nineteen eighty two the first year. The league kept saxes social status. I just want everyone to know that you are a part of obviously the silver rush defense in detroit and you're the best pass rusher in in the league at that time in three seasons first three seasons you had twenty three.

"Leader michael strahan or bubba baker. Well neither. We'll get back to that. I know and love strahan's saw so much of his career in person. This is because pro. Football reference is going back looking at things. Like tackled tackles behind the line zacks and they go all the way back and find that baker had twenty three sacks. I think in his rookie season a second season. Nineteen seventy eight straight handed to half later and so. Who's the leader. The leaders deacon jones because they don't have one hundred seventy six is neither deacon jones probably gets thirty sacks in the season back before they even keep it. He came lee. Nineteen sixty one. They're going back and looking at all. Those seasons his deacon jones write in candidate. Everything is deacon jones. it's the man from new jersey and i'm not talking about michael strahan bubba baker newark zone. Who went to colorado state if they went back and look no offense to my yesterday. And how about the last second. Michael strahan got that you're against brett farr breakfast kind of ran into a sack. I think you have to go with the record. It should be baker and you mentioned deacon jones. I was looking at that story. How about the fact that the great alan page one hundred forty eight career sacks carl eller one hundred thirty three they were on the same longtime. How would same wizard minnesota team going back to the deacon jones he played in fourteen games seasons and the subsequent guys played in sixteen games season. He was the answer to all of your questions about defensive line playing the weekend straight will be the first to tell you that what's next toss up. Which tampa team treated their trophy. Worse the bucks or the lightning. Everybody goes around doing this now. They got to show off with a trophy to tom. Brady tosses it and you know it could have gone in the drink and it could drown. That would have been funny. I guess it's the lightning. Although the stanley cup is had this. Look at that big dent. It looks like it was made that way. The stanley cup has had dense many times before they go in and hammer it out. I'm to still say tom brady. Even though the lightning tried to act a fool with the cup tired. I'm gonna have to be this guy when everyone talks about in baseball the nba nfl. They talk about getting the ring and hockey. They talk about the stanley cup. It's like the holy grail to them and then that's the way that you treat it. You put a gigantic dent by goofing around. I with real madrid. They once wanna trophy. The copa del rey. They had on the bus. They dropped it. they ran it over. They didn't mean to run over. What are the tampa bay. Lightning doing here. I thought lord staley. That's what you do to it but frankly abuse it every year. I was walking here once and patrick kane. After the first second blackhawks cubs said. What are you doing. I'm to go home and go to bed. He says no. I've got the cup and there was such joy cup as to what Three of them. I don't know who you're rooting for. But that's a tradition of the cup abusing it. That's it. We were talking last week about the Julio Jones situation and whether he was going to play for the Seahawks, and he will not be playing for the Seahawks as you correctly predicted, But who's he signing with? And is this good news or bad news? This is for the Tennessee Titans. Well, first of all, it's great news that he did not signed with the Seahawks. I'll get to that in a second. Um, he signed with the Tennessee Titans. The Tennessee Titans traded to get him. They gave up to the Atlanta Falcons. 2022 2nd round pick in the 2023 4th round pick for Julio Jones. Oh, and they have to pay all of Julio Jones salary right, which is what Julio Jones is due to make $15.3 million based salary this year. He's due to make $21 million the next season. After that, right now, the Titans are a little over the salary cap there about $3.4 million over the salary cap, so they were going to already have to make a few moves in order to kind of Get close to that? Well, now they're going to have to really make some moves to be able to take care of that $15.3 million for polio Jang, So there's some people that said Tennessee titans like, Oh, boy, I better work hard because I might be getting cut to make room for Julio Jones now. Why is that good news for Seattle? Yes. Have been cool to have a wide receiver like that. That wasn't wasn't the problem. The asking price was too much. Number one and number two Seahawks don't want to be given up that kind of draft capital, and the Seahawks definitely don't want to be paying that type of salary to a football player, which I'm not gonna lie. He's a good football player. He's 32 years old, right? He's dirty. He's 32 years old, and I know that sounds but and then he's coming off of some injuries. As of just recently and I'm not saying he's not going to be a good player. But if he would have come over maybe Seahawks to have a couple of draft picks maybe Atlanta you guys pay half his salary, but the Seahawks have other things to take care of. Right then that it's kind of like, you know, getting some rich some work done in your kitchen, right? Like well, Do I really need new cabinets? Okay, I just paint over them. But if you don't cause trouble as an opponent To the hawk. He's an A F. C. So what the Seahawks do play them. I think they play them the second game of the season, but he's in the A F. C. So it's not like he got traded to an NFC like the 40 Niners or the Arizona Cardinals, or the L A Rams. So, gee, I'm almost afraid to ask. But what did you do to get blocked by Brett Farr? Is it Farve? We farm? I just remember what was the movie where the person was like Brett Farve. Uh, I thought that was Tommy boy, but something about Mary something about Mary. Yes, That's right. We should talk to the media. I'm not saying you have to. You chose to be fined or not. I do think athletes are held to a different level and a different standard. And rightfully so because of the money that we make What? Yeah, that's fine. That's fine. It's cool. All I did was say when you're talking about the standard because you make a lot of money. Does that standard include when you sent a nasty Text message with a picture of your You know what? Back in 2008 to that media member. Does that count that or does that count when you have yet to still repay the $600,000 of the promised $1.1 million in welfare money? That you took from the state of Mississippi is out. Does that count that? Yeah, He blocked me. Mhm. Now what's the difference between being blocked and unfollowed? While Unfollowed just means that they don't show up on your timeline blocked means that They can't see you and you can't see them. You are shut out of their palace, so blocked is worse than unfollowed. Yeah, Yeah, it's it's a deliberate put poke in the eye. I think you is worse because then the person doesn't know that you can't see them. They think that you're still like they're still talking at you. But you've muted them so UK, so they're just wasting their rest. Yeah, that that mute that mute is something else. You know, Dave, that's how you can look at it. The unfollowed him blocked. You can look at it like man you got fired Or or okay, You gotta let go. I see you see, you see the difference in that You got fired. Also. You got Yeah, I got fired. Okay. I got fired from red far, but it's cool. I only here's the thing. I didn't accuse him of anything. I was asking, like, like when you when you When you start talking about the example because of the money you make. So you want to open up that can by saying, Hey, we make a lot of money. We need to do things a certain way. You made a lot of money. Should you be sitting text messages of your You know what? To reporters when you're married, bro? It is communication. I guess that's like saying you mean the virus was deliberately released by China Question, Mark? Yes. You're out of liability because of that question, Mark? Yeah, She's got nine o'clock with Jean Ursula on Cairo radio. Thank you. Gee. All right. It is 7 54 real time traffic..

"This big story that aaron wants out. We don't hear from erin he goes to the derby doesn't really answer. Body talks about unhappy that it got out of course. Well that's kind of a hedge. He talks about the fans he loves them. Of course that's always going to be the case when players are unhappy. Never blame the fans. They don't wanna turn their back. They don't want public opinion. Sway against them. Okay that's all kind of surface level of all this. it's out there can't take it back The bell has been wrong. So we're seeing. What's happening now aaron rodgers than vp the nfl. Okay let's go through my thoughts. First of all there's some deja vu aspect here you know. When we took aaron rodgers we did not let brett farr know beforehand that we were taking a quarterback now in that situation. We did not go into the draft when quarterback but he fell to us all the players wanted above the first round gray regard except for one. We trusted the board. We waited to see if the phone would ring in our fifteen minutes on the clock at never rang. We finally took him. Everyone hated the pitt but lambofield draft party below as booed shook the took our souls of all the booze media gives us in all the draft grades. Bread hated it. He called the coach. Brett's eighty at breads agent. Bus cook called me. No one was happy in an errand was probably not happy. I mean he put her on a good face but going place cold where he wasn't gonna play some fun from a california kid so anyway we endured that. But i think a lot of people say okay. It's a problem. Let's move on to move on from a team perspective. The team created this as we did years ago in the teams created it. Now what we did years ago is what we you know. I had a lot of the responsibility. Others in the organization did too but you had to hear this almost every week from the two sides and we have these two sides with brett farve camp which is like andrew. Do you know what it's like to come into work every day and sit with replacement. That's so fun..

"The head of household tax filing status. It would also completely eliminate these state and local tax deduction the earned income tax credit to low income. Families would also be simplified to a thousand dollars for single earners in two thousand dollars for married couples no matter the number of children in the family out of that entire list that tanf is probably the most controversial. Now it's supposed to provide grants to states in order to help give support services like care job preparation and work assistance. However it hasn't actually been working like that you see in nineteen eighty six. The states were given more freedom to spend this money however they thought it would help. Poor families allegedly and they also don't have to justify why they think that to anyone so for example in twenty nineteen. There were sixteen billion dollars. That was supposed to go out through. The tanf grants only two point. Nine billion spent cash assistance for low income families. Not just tax breaks and activists say that cash actual cash is more important in more helpful. Picking on mississippi bit a recent audit found out that they actually spent their money on a speaking engagement for brett farr which he didn't show up for a series of fake. Non profits run by family of pro wrestlers of the million dollar man as well as three trucks. Football tickets and lobbyists. Yeah that whole mess still under investigation. So like i said. This is a pretty bold plan from romney and it is expected. Have bipartisan support. And i don't believe it's related in any way to the stimulus bill so it should be its own thing meaning would have a pretty darn good chance to pass so there you have it folks as promised. That's the news short and sweet day two things. I completely forgot to mention yesterday number one. I do have a link. You can follow in the show description to sign up for a free trial of audible which is amazon's like audio book and podcast app. Say you get a free month and then you do have to enter your credit card but you can cancel at any time so you could even like sign up and cancel right away but in any case i'm actually looking forward to trying that out in maybe seeing if i get barack obama's new book on there because he actually does his own audio book while he read his own book the one that just came out a promised land so that code is in the episode description and then also there's a link to a survey. I just figured it's been a while. Since i did one of those. She can give me feedback on the show anonymous or you can give me your email if you want me to follow up with you. The only other thing. I could possibly ask. You is to leave a review on gas if you haven't yet maybe you're a newer listener and you didn't hear me mentioned that in quite some time but really it does help other than that. Stay safe out there. Stay home if you can get your. Kobe shot as soon as you can. And i'll.
Favre: Rodgers 'surprised' by Packers' decision to take Love
"Brad L. or the Green Bay Packers trading up to draft quarterback Jordan love in the first round last week surprised everybody including Brett Farr the hall of Famer watch the exact same thing happened fifteen years ago when the pack drafted his successor in Aaron Rodgers Green Bay again choosing to focus on the future with its first pick rather than build off of last season's run to the NFC championship game here's farm on SiriusXM NFL radio they were several plays away from the Super Bowl to me it sends a message that I'm not I'm not saying that it's with the wall pick but I'm saying based on their situation present
NFL Draft 2020: Packers blindsided Aaron Rodgers with Jordan Love pick
"Operate Jacobin the NFL draft came off without a hitch last night and was a welcome relief in rounds two and three you'll be tonight but this week's event as certainly re energize the football fan commissioner Roger Goodell was a guest on CBS this morning is hoping the NFL can start on time but the draft continues tonight last night's first round didn't have any surprises up top but they came later in the evening the Packers at the biggest eye opening move trading up to take Utah state quarterback Jordan love Green Bay is coming off a conference championship game appearance but instead of adding a weapon for Aaron Rodgers of which there were several possible wants to add they didn't step decide to draft his successor GM Brian Goodwin said it came down to finding the top player on their board Rogers was drafted late in the first round fifteen years ago and sat behind Brett Farr for three years perhaps the Packers will follow that same plan with love certainly needing seasoning after a down year with the Aggies the Bengals let off the draft by taking Heisman Trophy winner Joe borrow as expected all the number one pick in tonight's second round as well some of the other winners from last night's first round include the Miami Dolphins went three picks in the opening round and still got to a talk by lower thought was the tank for two up but that seemingly went out the window when they won five of their last nine games but they still got their guy at number five the Alabama quarterback is downplayed concerns over his injury saying he's fully recovered from hip surgery they also drafted some protection selecting offense of tackle Austin Jackson out of U. S. see the box also beefed up their offense of line moving up a spot to take some protection for Tom Brady and I was tackled Tristen worst tiki and Tierney will have complete coverage of tonight's festivities beginning
The Myth of Quarterback Hand Size
"So let's talk some measurements. That's what went down today. The consensus number one overall pick Joe. Pearls hand sized came in at nine inches. Listen to this. The last quarterback that man that small drafted first overall was jared. Goff BACK IN TWO THOUSAND SIXTEEN GUYS. So that's some comparison it's annual. Nfl tradition every year were introduced to the incoming class of rookie quarterbacks. And we're told that a single measurement matters hand size but what if the metric is totally meaningless as the NFL combine unfolds in Indianapolis we investigate the connection between big hands and big production and ask whether Scouts are chasing a myth. I mean it's Tuesday February twenty fifth this is espn daily presented by ADT. Dave I was very self-conscious reading this piece because I don't know if you know this about me but I have tiny tiny hands. I have gigantic cans. Do you See come on tiny baby hands. Dave Flemming is a senior writer for. Espn his report on the NFL's obsession with quarterback hand size publishes ESPN DOT com today. So Dave yesterday was a big day for the quarterback prospects at this year's combine the annual release of the hand size measurements and the annual freak out about said measurements. Well I mean. It's like a national scouting holiday when the the QB hand size measurements. Come out because there is the belief that the distance between a potential NFL quarterbacks tip of his pinky and the tip of his thumb directly correlates to their success in the NFL. That's why we care just to give people sort of a framework here. What what is the big hand? And what is this small hand in football world red flags and NFL SCOUTING? Go up if your hand is smaller than nine and a half inches. But the guys who are said to have hands the size of Catcher's Mitts are. That's generally anything above ten inches. The normal size of adult humans hand is like eight and a half inches eight eight eight point seven five inches right now. Everyone is listening to this. Podcast is looking at their hands if they're under STEERING WHEEL WONDERING DO. I have two small hands. I've never thought about it until this very moment. Well Yeah and I think that is also part of it right that it's a myth or a theory or a legend that are virility is directly connected to the size of our hands that basically goes back to the beginning of time so in that sense. It seems logical that that we care about. How big a quarterback's hands are. What is the origin of the belief in the NFL world? That big hands equals good quarterback as far as I could tell were really took off with with Brett farve scouts and just people in general trying to quantify any way they could why this guy who was sort of a washout in Atlanta would go to the freezing cold and ice elements inside Lambeau field and become a three time. Mvp I mean. I think that's just human nature and scouting in general right that it's like whoa something weird like this happens. We want to be able to quantify it honestly. I think the there were some packers personnel. Who sort of wanted to claim credit for basically knowing in advance that he would be great because of his hand size and then what happens is human nature takes over right and people are like well. That's that's gotta be true. Look at Brett Farr for Lou peyton manning or look at Russell Wilson drew brees. I mean their hands are huge. So therefore air go right. All good quarterbacks have to have big hands breezing. Wilson are interesting examples. Because those were quarterbacks who were not universally seen as being sure things? Yeah in cases like that especially with Russell Wilson. You've got a really influential scouting and personnel department in Seattle right. That is sort of the envy of the rest of the League. And what happens is they. They can't decide. They're worried about picking him so high mainly because of his height and then one of the things that pushes him over the edge in their minds is the fact that he's got huge hands. I think the bigger the hands the easier it is to grip the football and let it rip so for me this this pointer finger right near the tip of the football and let spent basically he should be like seven foot seven if you go proportionately of for how big his hands are so the seahawks based on this data get pushed over the edge. They're like okay. We're GonNa Take Russell Wilson and then retrospectively. It's like Oh look at that. How genius that was that. We went by his hand size. And then that sort of proliferates the myth through all these other kind of envious scouting department's and the same thing for debris. I mean he's a short guy but he's got huge hands data on S. U. Y. When did you as a reporter? Who's been covering football for a long time? I start to doubt the correlation between hand size and being good quarterback I was at years ago at Jamarcus Russell's pro day at at Lsu and it was not good and as he finished up his workout. I walked out with a GM and a coach that I respected and I was like what did you guys think. That was very good and they both were like. Yeah but did you see his hands? They were huge. I think the coach even said it's like he's got an extra knuckle and I was like what that doesn't make any sense right. He could barely connect with his wide receivers on these on routes where there was no defense and they walked out of there going. Yeah but his hands are so huge. He's a can't miss prospect and ever since then really it was kind of like we need to look into this because it doesn't make any sense there have been exhaustive studies including one we did at ESPN. That went back over the last ten graphs and compared quarterback hand size to fumble rate per game and then Qbr overall there is zero correlation between the size of a quarterback's hand and their performance in the NFL. Zero correlation if anything it was in reverse the GUYS WITH QUOTE UNQUOTE SMALLER. Hands fumbled at the same rate and had a higher qbr than quarterbacks with bigger hands. It's like I don't understand. It takes two seconds to look this up to see if there's any correlation and what happens is you look at the data and you go. Well what's going on it's laughable coaches say? Oh hand size is more important than how Tala quarterback is I've read quote unquote draft experts. Who are saying you know in some situations. The size of a quarterback's hand is more important than his arm strength. What and Yes yes. It's never ending. You make a really important point story beyond questioning you know. The connection hand size measurements themselves are not very reliable. This the more you look into this it just gets sillier and Sillier and the fact that between the senior bowl and the combine and then pro day workouts on college campuses. There's no universally accepted way to measure a hand so you could go to the combine and where there's a ruler tape to a desktop and you have to put your hand down and they measure the distance between your thumb and your pinky and that's your hand size and three weeks later at your pro day. They might ask you to just hold your hand up in the air and they would spread a tape measure between your pinky and your psalm. And and that's your hand size one. You can lean into and spread your hands out on a desk. The only thing wrong with the theory of quarterback hand size is that it's fundamentally flawed on every single level if grip strength is more important. Sounds like you think it is. Why don't teams measure that? I honestly that's the million dollar question right. I think that they think that. There's a correlation between size and strength of a grip that's like measuring a kickers foot size to try and predict how long his field goals will be. I think that they think they're measuring for hand strength. And they're not they're measuring hand size and those are two completely different things. There's an entire cottage industry in the draft process of preparing these quarterbacks for you know the combine drills the interviews. Is there any preparation they can do? I can't believe I'm asking a question to make. Their hands seem larger. Yes absolutely there are players because they have no choice. That will hire your hand. Masseuses to loosen up the connective tissue in their hand just so that they can get that measurement over nine inches and sort of. Check that box off Brandon Allen. Who's now a backup in? Denver is a perfect example of that right. He went into the senior bowl. Didn't even realize hand measurement was a thing and just sorta held his hand up and they were like oh eight and a half inches. And everyone's like Oh my God his career's over and so between the senior bowl and the combine the masseuse that he was already working with spend a little extra time massaging his hand and then when he got to the combine he really concentrated on the measurement spread his hand out as far as he could and I think he got just under nine inches and again like the talk of the combine. Was this guy's magical hand masseuse. And he told me right that other quarterbacks with tiny hands we're blowing up his phone asking him what his secret was and and could they get the number of his masseuse coming up. How our brains allow this and other faulty? Nfl Scouting Practices to persist
Saturday’s NFL schedule is an unexpected delight: Three games with high stakes
"And we had some great games yesterday we had Texans defeating the Bucks wrapping up another A. F. C. south champs there for for five seasons they've done that we ended up having the rails be eliminated by Jimmy garage below Robbie gold late into that ballgame is the forty Niners looking for that number one seed but it was all about the New England Patriots once again and of course they win the AFC east for the eighty seventh consecutive year and bill Belichick was asked about you know where that ASC east hat how do you like the fit of the hat the current lower Nyssa can you imagine it sounds like or how should show press good right yep yep yep sounds good me we can get it done with all its music and I played with Brett Farr is that's that's fair is there a worst give me because who buys that I mean you know you're always looking for a last second Christmas gifts I mean does anyone actually own an A. F. C. east champs T. series in fairness you're offered up a banner that they participated in AFC championship so there are two New England is not gonna be one of those programs that is excited about a hat from an AFC east championship that I think you just said eighty seven straight yeah they're not but but you don't think of the Browns won their division that those hats would go flying off the shelves I I guess right again it's it's expectation level on where you've been and I was in baton Rouge earlier this week and I looked at it and it had give the semi final game tee shirts as you know against Oklahoma there like a get ready for the peach bowl this could be great Mike that's got to be a tough sell as far as merchandise did you want to say that you went there yeah you want to take it that you went to the game yes but it's not the end all be all for Ellis shoots to win a national championship in is to have the national championship cert against probably either I think the Clemson Tigers at Ohio state if they're able defeat defeat Oklahoma but for the patriots it's incredible that they continue to do it and I think I go back and look at Sean McVay tell sure and what happened I thought this was interesting his quote about not going to the Super Bowl would ready to attack the Aussies it is tough because you care so much about these players the work that they put in and you want to do your part to try to you know see yourself you know have see those guys have that success and get an opportunity compete for World Championship we're not gonna do that but I do trust that were made of the right stuff I know that once we get through next week I can't wait to attack the off season figure out how I can be better for this football team as we move forward and I think the scars are gonna make us better it's interesting you know the last time I heard bill Belichick talking give something similar a speech two thousand eight I don't even think you gave that speech river Brady was alpha back castle ins of coming in after Brady got injured in the first couple of games and they go eleven five that was the last time it's been over a decade since the patriots had to give a speech like that and when I see Sean McVay who was this hot you know commodity they go they lost a wild card game made it to the Super Bowl in your two and we're thinking all right he's figured out the game he's brilliant makes me appreciate tells her what bill Belichick and the patriots continue to do in this sport appeared at the end of a yeah and that's why it's been the gray of people say it's the greatest run dynasty in the history of the league because how everything is structured for this not to happen and you see that these teams that lose super bowls the hang over effect there is something there because it's so hard to get in that position and then when you just fall short of it the error just comes completely out and having to reboot now they're rebooting and when you give up draft picks like the rams have and they have a full offense of why they have to re vamp you know in a way it is not left tackle he's getting older if he's gonna come back and play there's a lot of different things that they're going to have to deal with in the Sean McVay the genius title and why so many of these young coaches got hired that was not the case for a majority this season they did come on and play better at the end of the year but there is a stretch in the middle of the season this team was lost so they have a lot of work to do show my face got to figure out kind of new ways to reinvent what he's doing with the personalities gonna have it in you try to re invented and we see reinventing offices work right we we see with what the ravens have done under Lamar Jackson we sell it Sean make very had done obviously with the rams and the collegiate level though I think you can win a national championship by reinventing your office I you look at the LSU Tigers and and what we seen even clubs and while work with but in the NFL it's tried and true it's not about how great your offenses ask Patrick well homes as he has a super beau yet now is arguably the most impressive player often simply we've seen in years but it's about the defense and I guess we still trust the patriots more than anyone because of that defense dowsers or anyone else no I mean right now if you ask me I trust Baltimore and what they're doing running the football and then the defense because it used to be it was all defense and still it keeps you in these games but with the roles and how things go use you have to be able to move the football and that's why the people have been more down on this patriots team because they've struggled so much all season well yesterday was the first real glimpse in the last three or four weeks that you see you know what maybe and now I think you're gonna see a little bit of that doubt start coming back
Andrew Luck's retirement shocks football fans
"And we were shocked by the stunning retirement the age twenty nine Andrew luck the Indianapolis Colts quarterback one estimate I read it a half billion dollars in four gone earnings your reaction might going to made it your top ten but your personal reaction to this young man saying I've got enough I'm not going to risk my health my personal reaction is that this present a massive issue to the NFL how dangerous indeed bill attending the sport can be hold it takes on top talents agenda and I were talking about this last night you reminded me of one of the great Green Bay Packers Brett Farr battled addiction to pain killers the talk about taking fifteen by the bike it in at one time taking a month's worth of pain killers in two days and so I think that the lock during the war you said that the joy had gone out of football the you're stuck in a cycle of the injury rehab injury we have the New York times on football a comma convulsant writing players of locks generation now make a loop whose calculation between help Christmas money and that's going to put them in conflict with team owners who always want more football not what and if you did a little more digging tomorrow you'll see that Andrew luck got crushed his first two seasons with the colts because they had a terrible offensive line to go back to Michael Lewis is great but the blind side and I'm watching Baker Mayfield were on the cover of the brands on the covers SI Odell Beckham junior Jarvis Landry and behind the Baker may feel and Nick Chubb we're gonna have a great year we had a very good offensive line after job attorney I was at left guard and I'm beginning to think that reading that Andrew luck story the brown should start trading draft choices to get in a line to protect their asset which is Baker may feel he's the whole club these everything and the reason Andrew luck is quitting with half the career of Roethlisberger and and one two fifths of the career of Tom Brady is because you don't have an old line it be it Michael Lewis is frightening still right this is a brown story is proof that all politics is local the the the ill the triumph of hope over experience has led me to have season I have my four on the fifteen people want them and I'm so excited about Mike Allen always a pleasure good Monday
