Hey, this is Tom verducci from Fox Sports, MLB network and Sports Illustrated. I can't wait for this, Joe. We're going to dive into what goes on in the dugout and behind the scenes in Major League Baseball. Cars wind, whatever else we want to talk about. Listen to the book of Joe podcast on the iHeartRadio app on Apple podcast or wherever you get your podcasts. Stat of the day brought to you by panini America, the official trading card to the Dan Patrick show. Carson Wentz and Justin Fields will throw for over 400 passing yards combined. You can bet on that tonight if you want to. Anybody, I mean, come on. 200 yards for each. Anybody signing up for that? Over 400 yards combined over under his 38 and the over under. Okay, here's something for you. This is how evenly matched the commanders and the bears are, which is embarrassing for the commanders. Over under right now for both of these teams is the same number. 5 and a half wins. Yikes. Yikes. Now, I was correct last time I brought this up to you. The person who was the favorite to score the first touchdown in the Raiders game and it was devonte Adams. And it was devonte Adams with the first touchdown. Who? Has the best odds to score a touchdown tonight? Todd, I'm going to say Justin field is going to run one in. Okay. Justin Fields is third on the list. Pauly being a bears fan? Terry McClure and the wider series. He is second on the list. Anybody else want to guess?

"And said, we think he's going to be good for us. And the rest is history. I mean, Howard brought in record audiences. He was the first one. You know, the halftime highlights were really relevant back in the day because you didn't see every game. And you were thrilled if he did your team. You got upset if he didn't. People were upset with Howard. The countdown to kick-off with Brent Musburger, so each Sunday from noon until one eastern, so what's special about this show that you're going to do? Well, you know what's interesting is because Dan, you and I have talked about the legalization of gambling across the country in Visa and actually proceeded the Supreme Court ruling, which opened it up, and now we've got upwards of 40 states where it's going to be like, I think, Ohio, legalizes the first of you, I think somebody told me about it anyway. It's an enormous party. All you have to do is watch an NFL game now. And you see the ads from DraftKings in particular. They have DraftKings, of course, bought V send. So in effect, we work for DraftKings now, and you can see the amount of advertising they do up on the game. So in that last hour, in the countdown to kick-off on Visa, the last hour before they kick it off, many of the millions of dollars changed hands in the legalized betting markets. So those numbers, those numbers are changing. And you know, we come up with relevant statistics, for example, in the first part of the season, the people like to bet over unders, you know, they prefer to be over. That's a little bit more fun. But in divisional games, the unders hit at a dramatic rate. I mean, it was make money time if you were a better who followed things like that. So we do that. There's also always a couple of injuries. Always a couple of injuries that you've got to keep an eye on. And then just like we did with the NFL today, there's weather. We had wind in a couple of places and you know, when there's more important than actually rain, snow, things like that, because it affects the passing game when you go into that wind. So those are the things that are relevant and we talk to people, Michael gone runs a soft point. We get the updated odds down there. Derek Stevens opened up this unbelievable sports book here at circa that the other end of town. So we talked to their people in their bookmakers and try to pass along relevant information. Listen, and I've said this to you, many many times. The youngsters in particular be careful.

"Yeah, you know, that's an interesting story too. Because we had a big production meeting. Vanguard Assad was in the head of the head of CBS sports. And there was actually a debate that is to who John Madden was going to work with. Now, there is an answer who never gets any credit, long forgotten. But Madden's first partner was carried vendor. And Gary mender was one of the most generous announcers of all time. NBA announcer too. Yeah, he really taught John how to handle a booth in the monitors and everything. And then it became the debate, was between Pat Summerall or Vince Scully, okay? And about half of the people in that meeting, including van, were pushing for Scully, to be mad as partner, but what one out was the feeling and it was accurate that with summer all Madden would have more room that pat was more succinct, whereas Vinny with his eloquent way would occupy more of the broadcast time. And I think that was correct. I think it was a, it was a win win, someone all had been working with Tom brookshire. And they were fun together this morning. Obviously, brookie was more of a character and then John came along and it was a perfect pairing and a Scully's Scully's last game for CBF Dan was with Hank stram was the analyst and it was Dwight Clark with the touchdown and catch that beat the cowboys in the playoffs in San Francisco. That was Scully's last football call for CBS. So he went out with a he went out with a great game. We're talking to Brent Musburger. You have these characters. Like Dick Vitale, you wouldn't think that would be somebody who would be transcendent that he would last for decades. Even Chris Berman, John Madden, how do you explain these certain characters where you wouldn't put them in and go, yeah, right out of central casting, they work. Why do they work?

It is a sign from a sports stadium. It is not. Is it an item of clothing? It is not. It has a piece of clothing on it. Todd? My other guest was some type of a water trophy that once again you're going to get in trouble for borrowing and displaying. Okay. Is it from one of your heroes or kind of a random person? "I have a proposal poll question for the next hour. So here in Seattle, everyone is flying in droves off the Seahawks bandwagon. Let's ride. Let's try. So with the deshaun Watson controversy, who would you have to have as your quarterback, deshaun Watson or Gino Smith? I'd rather have Gino Smith right now because Deshawn is not going to play. If they're both eligible, then you take deshaun Watson. You know, unless you say, look, I'm not going to follow the team. I don't want to be part of them. I don't want to root for them, not part of the fan base. But that's really hard to do. 'cause if you grow up watching a team, when we talk through thick and thin, it's usually when you have a tough loss, like an earnest binary fumbles or something. This is different. But that's what being a fan is nowadays. Hey, my guys are using steroids, where they got caught using your fan. Okay. We'll get through it. My team signed Michael Vick. All right, we'll get through it. Let me go down the list. I mean, this happens. This is difficult though. Aaron and Missouri, hi Aaron, what's on your mind? Hey Dan, it's a quick question. You have a pretty respective self safe and embellish. It appears to me to save and enjoy teaching the game and skill and nuance more, Belichick, enjoys the extra nose. Which one do you think lasts longer than their turns? I don't know when people reacted after the Sabin interview like he sounded sad about retirement. I don't want to retire, I can't imagine what retirement would be like. No, I probably don't sound sadder despondent or down, but I mean, that's how Nick Saban is. His delivery is like that. But I go back to Joe Paterno. Brent Musburger said, he will never stop coaching because when he stops he'll die. And look what happened. You know, Bear Bryant. I mean, there's certain coaches. This is what they do and they don't know what to do with themselves. These guys don't play golf. They probably don't have a big circle of friends and have book club and go out and go on golf excursions to Scotland or Ireland. Like he was talking about. He goes, you know, that's not what I do. So I get it. But sometimes the job holds on to you. You get the job, but then the job gets you. And you know, what's he going to do? He loves doing it. I just didn't know with all of the political stuff with college football, do you want to continue to do it? Because when you start, it's different. You know, nobody's transferring if they are. They got to sit out a year. There's no name image in likeness. No, you're making a good living, get to a bowl game, keep your job. Now he's got to win a national championship. You got these kids coming and going. You know, you get into a back and forth with Jimbo Fisher. Like, there's a lot going on social media. And I just didn't know at some point because Belichick doesn't have to deal with this. That's why I think Belichick coaches longer. He doesn't have to deal with this much. Yeah. And I think Alabama is one of those schools, let Nick Saban have two straight three losing season three game losing seasons. He's on the hot seat. Don't hold your breath for that. Yeah. Oh, no, no, it won't happen, but I do think he's been tempted. I think that that Texas opening, whether they would have created an opening. I think a couple of years ago that he was starting to look at, man, has anybody satisfied or happy around here. If we don't win a national championship, and here they are, the number one team in college football final hour coming up, Nick Saban used to coach in the NFL with the dolphins. The dolphins make Darius Rucker cry. He'll join us coming up. More phone calls as well. It's a meat Friday. I got to go inspect the traeger's. It's part of my job responsibilities, final hour coming up. There's nothing like being

"Country Ladies and gentlemen it's over Mark Cohn the leaks chief content officer says over time wants to produce not only basketball's next big star but broadcasts that appeal to a younger demographic One way to do that is by hiring social media influencers instead of play by play announcers We're not going for Al Michaels or Brent Musburger or Mike tirico to call the game We're looking to do something different and that's something different includes leaving in only the good stuff Instead of going out and producing live games what we're doing is we're kind of what I call taking the air out of these games and we're being able to kind of condense them down into 45 to 65 minute games So in addition to the condensed games on YouTube a production team pulls even shorter highlights to post to TikTok Instagram and Twitter during the game The competition is out there and it's only a quick swipe away that if you don't keep people's attention like every three seconds you're gonna lose them So you have no choice but to reinvent how you're going to broadcast and distribute a game The league doesn't have a TV deal but it does have a loyal following on social media and a sizable number of likes and views that can result in extra attention for players from pro scouts and revenue for the company It can also be a model for sports broadcasts of the future In an age when many younger fans don't watch cable TV and usually won't sit through a whole game That audience is not watching live games right Like that's that covered in audience that all the leagues are looking to be able to figure out how they watch live games As it wraps up its inaugural season in Atlanta over time elite continues to be a laboratory of sorts and how to develop pro basketball players and market to young sports fans A meow Moffat W 80 E news Our time now four 48 Coca-Cola follows a number of large corporations and pulling out of Russia This happening just this afternoon will have the very latest when we check in with the WAB E Newsroom coming up in about 12 minutes and then Florida lawmakers have passed a controversial bill that would prohibit discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools You know there's a line of thought in our country right now that parents shouldn't be involved in what their kids are learning in school I reject that Coming up in the next hour we'll hear from students and teachers who oppose the measure Support for WAB.

We're going to see on saturday night. Have the florida gators in talking about it too much all week long. You can't have a conversation down here without looking into the rear view mirror instead of looking ahead to seven o'clock on saturday night against tennessee because it was such an effect because it so much about florida taking mighty alabama to the wire coming up short on the two point conversion so we talked to. "I mean that's the key when you think of these shows you know peyton says something it can be headlines. Barkley says something shack says something. How many guys do you are you getting headline worthy material. Out of wayne's just a guy who loves the the sport and is a great ambassador but is he going to can. Can he break down. How you know an offensive minded player things what you think because it felt like wayne was so instinctive that i don't know if he could explain how he did what he did. I ask john mcenroe. Many many years ago i said. Can you explain what you do. And he didn't know how to do he he said i don't i don't think about it. I just do it when i when i play and joe montana. Joe's wonderful guy but he. They tried him broadcaster. It didn't work. You know. Joe named joe nemeth one of the most charismatic guys we've ever had in the nfl. It didn't work as a broadcaster. Yeah time and they're so soft spoken like you say they're nice guys once you get past the you know. wow look. They got wayne. Gretzky onset or joe montana said once you get past the name value and it's time for the content. We've had them on the show we've seen them in interviews. They're just very soft spoken guys. But that's their personality. You know payton has got that. I can jab you. I got a great sense of humor. We've given the patriots grief. He gets up there at the hall of fame and he pokes fun at ray lewis from the previous hall of fame speech that took forever like he's really really good at that. Aaron rodgers might be that kind of guy. I could see aaron rodgers being able to do something like this. By the way speaking of aaron rodgers he was on the pat mcafee show yesterday and he didn't call out anybody by name. I think i know who he's talking about when he said this. It's absolutely worst platform. People have no idea what they're talking about my mental state and my focus my work habits people that have been around me not in my life. I don't have communication with them or not in the locker room. This just his chicken. It's it's so ridiculous. That's aaron rodgers. yesterday on pat. Mcafee show i think he might be talking about jer. Michael finley the former packer tight. I think spent six or seven years with green bay and He had this to say recently about aaron rodgers on espn radio. This is a national football league age. All worked like as he lasted. And i just felt. See a work ethic in aaron rodgers that i have in previous years and I actually you can see light through. His helmet is in the face so tells everything goes the personality and I just don't see it that. Nfl hunger and and just feel hungry to win another championship. I just think it's cliche and talk That that guy up there and say. I want to win the championship. I mean it sounds good..

But it's chemistry. On their nobody knew kirk herbstreet he and fowler really. Good friends lee corso. Nobody knew about lee corso. He wasn't a big name coach. But it worked and you try to replicate that and you. Can't you know imitation greatest form of flattery. But also it can be pretty tough in this business and that's why. I don't see anybody else being able to do this. If tom brady decided when he retired he was gonna do one of these where he sits around with. Who gronk okay. I'd watch that and then you have guessed on. I'd be curious. You know if you had a defensive player on. I'd be curious about that. But they're they're they're going to try to do it. But you can't because peyton and ally together first of all you got two brothers super bowl winning quarterback and then the chemistry is what you can't replicate. And that's what everybody tries to do and and they're not going to be able to do that but that won't stop them. They'll be other networks. That tried to do this. Well you mentioned who you do for them. Be a it would have been kobe. Bryant from me yes go. Rhino was as as intelligent as anybody can break down anything in the moment and he played against everybody he played against jordan he played against lebron. He encapsulated two generations of nba. "If there's a checklist for it was everything it was shortness of breath. It was the high code it was the it was the cough it was it was like everything like the dehydration. All of the the body stuff like like like the release of the body like everything was just just at its highest worse. That was dion undockings yesterday talking about his own battle with covert nineteen. I played it simply because it's a great reminder of what could happen to you when you survive covert and and i'm a survivor of covert. You know my daughter is a survivor of covert. My wife's a survivor of covert. There are millions of people in this country who are survivors of cove in nineteen. And what's interesting. As the raiders made the announcement that they're going to require fans to wear who who have a vaccine to be vaccinated fully or they're going to have to come in and in order to go to the game. They're going to have to get a shot. they're gonna have to get vaccinated to go to the game because they don't want to run around and have people who are required to tell every fan. Put your mask on which is what the requirement here in the state of nevada is. You must be wearing a mask. Mandate here in the raiders. Like you know what we don't want to do this. The rule being effect. Coming up on monday night against the baltimore ravens now on twitter and this was i think joking twitter. But you know brent musburger tweeted out that. It was a smart move by the team. He's the voice of the raiders. Because lamar jackson will not get vaccinated. So can lamar. Jackson play at allegiance stadium. If lamar jackson refuses to get vaccinated. It's a joke but it actually is a somewhat decent question to ask like wait so this is just for the fans. Okay but what about the players. I mean there's a of people in that field they're going to interact with the fans are going to be stopping high five. Like know what do you do with that. If a players like i'm not going to get vaccinated i refused. The teams cannot force there. The nfl is trying to force the players but not not everyone is vaccinated in watching hard knocks. It's the first time when you can. Actually you can identify who's been vaccinated. Who has not been vaccinated because players who have not been vaccinated are wearing masks. They have to. It's by protocol. They have to wear masks when they're on the sidelines. And you can go. You're not vaccinated on you are vaccinated. And you see ezekiel elliott and you see dak prescott in. They don't have any of the restrictions. You see other offensive. Lineman defensive lineman. They're wearing masks..

"It's a it's a great great cause and it'll be a fun event I just wanted to comment on your marv thing. I actually had that written down last week. Talk about this with you. You've never actually told me that you were big. More fan never I probably should've asked you at some point Considering that that's where you grew up and you were massive knicks fan. But i i can totally appreciate you know All of the honors. I mean it's it seems like over the last couple of weeks. It's been every single night that there's been a marv albert you know segment or something. And i understand. Specially for new yorkers what he's meant to them you know over a long period of time with that said to me and it's not that i it's not that i'm not a mar fan and i i think he's always called a solid game but to me and on the national level. He's not even close to some of the greatest lead play by play people In you know over a lot of different sports like he's not in some summerall or gowdy or keith jackson. Give me a basketball name Jim nance college basketball For sure dick. End berg college basketball brent musburger the nba lee not even close in my body. Yeah you're right you're right not even close just got that fought on. I think that. I think that new yorkers have a completely different view and i know that nba fans a lot of them have loved. Marv i'm just telling you my opinion. Okay that if you told me right now. These upcoming nba finals are going to be called by marv. Or brent musburger even brent at eighty two years old gimme brent prints still owed okay. Don't don't make me. Don't make me come through this phone. It's unbelievable. have you heard we were asking that. I'm ending ending this with what what such a bad taste. This is just horrific. This is the most horrific thing you've said to me since i can remember. Why haven't you told me before in the many years we've been doing stuff together that you were a big mar fan. I've never heard. Because i i assume everybody who listening to marv albert would be a big mar fan. I didn't think we i actually come across. Somebody watches the game and doesn't think more of his great. But i found the guy. I think marv again i think he deserves all of the honors. I think he deserves praise for being really good. I don't put him anywhere near the class of the great lead. Play by play guys of all time from on my list. The some roles the galaxies. The keith jackson's jimmy is what we have to keep it the basketball okay. Well you know. First of all mark did more than basketball he did. Nfl for years. No one has ever claimed that his greatness was it was anything but the but nba basketball. My brain learn from mike. Breen's much better than marv's ever been. I'm just telling you. Mike breen is so much better than us finishes. I'm so angry. I can't even think straight about the more of stuff. Yeah yeah. I was thinking though that the marv stuff in terms of just the nba like dick. Stockton for years followed brent musburger who throughout you know. The seventies was the lead play by play guy with rick barry and with bill russell right. That was the that was the. I think sometimes just rick perry then it was dick stockton. Who was the lead For with tommy. Heinsohn on cbs. And then when it went to nbc. That's when marv it over And so stockton is known just as much for football brent's known just as much for football where marv definitely of those names and breen to definitely known much more for basketball so i will give you that but again. That wasn't my point. Anyway my point is is that i would have taken In terms of lead play by play guys a lot of guys. Before i'd take him. Oh you made your point. All right. Yes i did. Were done for the day You'll be back right. We're done you. You'd be back on thursday And for everybody else. Enjoy the day see..

You gotta do that when they do, ABC. I mean, I'm telling you The NFL on CBS for me as a kid. What about the early eighties? Maybe the late seventies. I mean, you had Herb Cross. I mean, Brent Musburger. George the list George Jimmy the Greek before he turned out to be such a turd. But you still had. I mean, the NFL did. I mean, that was the song You heard when you got home from church and you're like, OK, it's go time. It's the NFL and I'm saying Just give me give me one dose of her cross back. I'm going to use 120 plus cameras. Wow. Throughout the broadcast 10 4 K's into a cake cameras among the 120. That's gonna be cool holding. There's only like five TVs in the country to get eight K, though, right, right. I still can't figure out. I still can't figure out if my TV's getting four k If I'm eligible for four K, and actually, I'm gonna be home or try And you know, it also depends on your provider. Yeah, it was done. Juice there, right? Right. And so well, I called my provider and they told me that if my TV supported for K, they would send me the they've got to send you a special box for it. And, oh, I did not know if they send if they send us if they send you a special box for you're good to go. Um, you just have to figure out so and they're not gonna charge me for seven. A customer. There's for a while, but I just hope the game lives up to the 3.5 point Spread. I want to see I want to see a great game between I'm not one of these people. I don't hate Brady. Just cause he's Brady. I don't hate my I just I want to see I know you, do you You want a lot of other people do Willie. I get it. I was having a conversation with some of the hockey dads. No. One's were over the weekend. There's a couple of just to test everything about Tom Brady. That's how I am with Aaron Rodgers, though, so I can sympathize where you're at. So the thing is, I just want to see a good game. I love to see one for the ages. It's been a while almost since. Well, you're titans and or your grams went up against the Titans. They're willing. Let's see another good scene, right? Yes. Super Bowls. Stop was solid. I'll tell you why. I also know you hate it, but When the Patriots be two Seahawks Russell Wilson threw that interception. Right the goal line. That was great. That's what I'm saying, Yeah, just give me I love Super Bowl we always have. Even when I was not in favor of the NFL. There's just the NFL network's doing a great job with it, and you watch some of the old Super Bowl. So to your point, I hope we get some great camera angles. We won't even care. If there's fans there. Another would be about 25,000 fans, I.

"The recognizable boy of Greg Papa twenty one years. On the Oakland Raiders radio network Why, do you care why are we playing, the highlight of a marshawn Lynch. Touchdown well because this surprising news drop on Thursday, this actually caught me by, surprise there isn't a whole lot that does. In sports especially not in sports media but this one did the Oakland Raiders dump Greg Papa as their radio play by play voice the signature call touchdown or eight hours In his place they hire Brent Musburger Brent Musburger I mean we all know the. Voice of Brent Musburger The guy seventy nine years old And he left to college football to start a channel on. Sirius XM that's sports betting channel it's. Called Vegas sports and information network It's about sports betting which. He generally did work. Into conversation on pretty much every broadcast He spent seventeen years at CBS twenty-seven years at ESPN he did NFL as well as. College football also college basketball before retiring in two thousand seventeen and going to Las Vegas Oh I guess he's bored Because now he's back as the new play by play. Voice, of the Oakland Raiders This is This, is amazing and I don't mean amazing as an I just mean amazing as in what a turn. Of events Two decades Greg Papa and the raiders usher I'm out now. I don't know if it's because they really. Wanted breath Brent Musburger and convinced him to, be part of, their network or if they found out Musburger was interested I have no idea which domino dropped I Only that Brent Musburger is. Back And with. The, raiders soon moving to Vegas oh That seems easy meeting. Tidy I hope that Papa finds another job in the NFL. "Do anything with him I think when he's one hundred percent and he knows he is that's when you'll see him on the court that could be. Halfway, through. The season yeah, exactly I think we're I think at best we're looking at maybe the end of December and I. Think warriors team again he's really just gravy to already a historically. Great team dominant team so if they have to wait all the way till after, the all star break. They, will do that now if, you, get boogie, cousins even let's say fifty to seventy five percent of what he was, that is extremely frightening thought. Even Seventy-five percent boogie cousins is fantastic especially in the postseason, I get. You but seventy five percent coming off an. Achilles I think that's a lot to ask for as well so we don't know exactly what kind of player we're going to get with the Marcus. Camby, are. Is the number, so yeah we're going to be talking with karnal attornal coming up in just a couple of minutes. And then at the end of the hour we're gonna talk to. Matt maiocco I do want to at some point get to the Mark Davis statement, he made about letting. Greg, Papa Gautam floors was let, go as well, so the entire broadcast for the raiders games going to be very interesting, next year As a raider fan and talking to raider fans that away Cambier isn't. It Mark, is Mark making it a little bit difficult for you to root for this team as. They have their last little bit here in, the bay area is making it. Difficult to be a raider fan because, I think he is for me. Anyways as much as I do bleed that team and I love the. Raiders since I was a child when they came back in the mid ninety s I mean What do you want me to? Do Mark you're giving away home game so they can go play across the water. In London I mean just the way that you've you've acted in Las Vegas Why why why can't you go get? A guy that's yours why do you have to go get, Brent Musburger a name if you wanted to get rid of Papa which is going to irritate the fan base because irradiates me and Flora's why can't you bring, on a guy and go through tapes of play by play broadcasts then have your guy instead of Musburger who I don't even? Know has has he ever. Even done in a on the radio and I was really. Frustrating it's, we're going to be really frustrated root for this team This year I'm going to of course but I? Just want to know raider fans away can't? Be are is he may get difficult he's not make I, don't think he's making it easy for me to go out and buy my ticket to a raider game it really is not I mean again the way that, he acts when he's in Vegas and the what what he says was in Vegas we've waited so this is so great this? Is this is slap in. The face tussin the East Bay I that's how I feel Roll around you. Stupid, bubble bubble top van Got it drives me crazy let's go to a nightgown Oakland before we get to Connor What a night now you can call me dragon Hey dragon how are you man Wasn't a Nighthawk stepbrothers. Who's, Nighthawk, was Nighthawk and? Jade It's night. Out okay yes, no, your night out yes go ahead I'm night Al hey, but I on the on. The raiders, and the whole Greg Papa in that, deal you know this is just another club by them but anyway The reason, I, called is to tell all athletes that are you know, thinking about dating a porn. Star during, all star week when the dentist week, in sports Think again man you don't think, we would, be talking about this if it was I don't know the middle of the NFL DS No You do it during, the, hey, Jimmy g. when the warriors are in the, finals take her, out Kostanic won't be you know top.
