ASU Puts Two More Asst. Football Coaches on Paid Leave Amid NCAA Investigation

"The arizona. State recruiting scandal continues so paul weeks ago Ataman brennaman tight ends. Coach was placed on administrative leave being connected to the recruiting of violations. That are being alleged now. On on monday they have now added wide receiver coach skill in. Db coach chris hawkins to pay administrative leave so training camp is underway. Asu is now down. Three assistant coaches at of course makes you wonder who might be next. Okay so what's interesting to me is adam. Brennaman was the first one who was really put out there in terms of he initially when he was a jay. J's don't make hardly any money so the idea that adam brennaman was bankrolling some of this seemed implausible if not downright laughable And then the two other assistants who are also starting out their careers as you mentioned. Both of those is to think that they were were masterminding. This situation on causally scheme. But that's what it feels like from. You know from the reporting doug and i have done some of the people we've heard from and so the idea that these three guys at the beginning of their career not being paid much money would be the ones funding all this and orchestrating. "A hit some controversy this Yeah, He got a little bit of trouble. About four months ago, He was on the air announcing a Redd's Royals game, and he used a gay slur while he thought his mic was off, which we all know Mike's are never off. Doesn't make it right. But he's actually been rehired to announce games again. Good, and it's just four months later. It's just, you know, As soon as the incident happened on air, he said he went right on and apologize. And he said, I don't know if I'm ever gonna put headsets on again. He knew the severity of what happened. And pretty much thought His career was over. But today it has been announced that the Roberto Clemente League has hired him to do play by play for the 2021 season. Oh, yes. Oh, not even Major league baseball. This is down in Puerto Rico. Yes. Oh, I say. Okay, well, studio It was passion, I guess. Yeah. What? Listen, I mean,

"Thom Brennaman. I guess we Should talk about Thom Brennaman. To me. The whole situation is just sad. What Tom said was wrong and hurtful. Everyone agrees with that everyone I don't know. Thom Brennaman. I never met him, but I've only heard good things about him. Good community person, Good family man, and he made a mistake. And he apologized for the mistake and his apology or apologies. Plural seemed sincere to me. And now he's at least temporarily suspended from Red's broadcast. And I think NFL broadcast as well. But here's the question. You have to ask yourself. Should this mistake and his career. And because of what he said which again was wrong. Is he an irredeemable person? You know, when something like this happens, It's always interesting to me. To see how different people react to it. And along those lines, I read a couple of letters to the editor. That show how different people see this thing differently. And the real short and I just want to read them to you. Just as kind of an example of that. Okay? This one is titled and I've done this before a long time ago. The writer of the letter to the editor normally does not give it the title. It's usually an editor at the newspaper, but anyway This one is titled Homophobia Slur came from Brennan's heart. And this person who lives in Loveland. I'm not going to read his name, this person said. I am disgusted with the home of homophobic slur Thom Brennaman made last night during the Reds broadcast. What is more concerning Is his dad defending him quote That's not my son. Close quote, and that is what what Marty said. And then this letter goes on Newsflash, Marty. It's your son. He wasn't reading from a script written by the Reds or Fox News Course. They always gotta drag Fox news into it, Whether it as I do, they're not. Anyway, This guy this writer goes on and says it was a statement from his heart. Guess you don't know your son too Well, Tom, say goodbye to the Cincinnati Reds, Fox Sports and all of your lucrative paid endorsements. Enjoy your time. In the unemployment line. According to this guy who remain nameless from Loveland father is not supposed to and I guess isn't allowed to support his son. And you know you can talk about Thom Brennaman all you want, but that person, that guy from Loveland That's a person with a lot of hate in his heart. I feel sorry for not only Thom Brennaman. I feel sorry for that person. I mean so much bitterness. He may be the one that really needs the sensitivity training. Okay. Compare that letter to this one. This is a short one. Compare that letter to this one, which was printed. It was right below right below the one. I just read this one is title. Don't Judge Brennaman over derogatory comment. And this one says to all who were offended by what Thom Brennaman said on a hot Mike during Wednesday's pregame Red Show. There isn't anyone anywhere on the face of the Earth who hasn't said something derogatory either about another person, Not one, not one. Not one person. What was that, saying something along the lines off. Let he who is without sin. There. Go. Get over it. You know, I don't know about you. That's kind of where I come down on this. Everybody makes mistakes. And when you make one over a hot mic, the world knows about it, but everyone makes mistakes and everyone deserves a second chance. I got one many years ago, and I like to think I made the most of my second chance. And Thom Brennaman deserves a second chance, And I think if he is given one, I think he'll make the most of it too. Anyway. That's what I think about that. As always, I want to know what all of you think. 7491 7800. The big one are the phone numbers to call and make your thoughts now. The language at Thom Brennaman us this evening is hateful offensive and in no way reflects the values of Fox Sports Ohio agree with the reds decision to suspend him until further notice. "Supposed to be once a week Knucklehead theater or somebody just as I'm really stupid, and it's caught on tape. This is the celebrity. Version of it. Thom Brennaman used to be comes broadcaster. Some people may remember that from a few years ago, Cam Brennaman is the son of Marty Brennaman, who was a gigantic hall of Fame broadcaster out of Cincinnati Thom Brennaman son following his footsteps. Head has had an amazing career 30 plus years he has been back in filling basically his dad shoes in Cincinnati for the last decade or so. He's also been on Fox Sports. He's done baseball for them. Football. For them is great broadcaster And I've always known him to be a gentleman. But it was a little something little goofy happened. Coming back from a break in the seventh inning in the first half of doubleheader yesterday. He apparently did not realize it is microphone was on and set. The captain is in the world. Read Live pregame show Presented by racing player Roofing boy. Ah, boy. So what he says there is. He uses a gay slur that starts with an F And then the word city like blank city to referred. I suppose it's a disparaging remark about a city at least that's what he thought it wass Or a ah or some group of individuals, Some group of things some. I don't know exactly. No, I've never heard the term before. Any continues on Does it really acknowledge what happened? And then He is told in the next game second part of the Devil header, So he's goingto be replaced in the booth, so he wants to make this apology. Nasty on those silly things off. Jim Day is going to be taking us the rest of the way through this game as Highland takes over on the mountain. I made a comment earlier tonight that I guess Went out over the year that I am deeply ashamed off. If I have hurt anyone out there. I can't tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart. I'm so very, very sorry. I pride myself and think of myself as a A man of faith is there's a drive in a deep left field by Castano's. It will be a home run, and so that'll make it a for nothing. Morgan Oh, boy, I don't know if I would be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's going to be for the Reds. I don't know if it's going to be from my bosses and Fox and we'll apologize for the people who sign my paychecks. For the Reds for Fox Sports Ohio for the people I work with for anybody that I've offended here tonight. I can't begin to tell you how deeply sorry I am. That is not who I am and never has been. And I'd like to think maybe I could have some people that they could back that up. I am very, very sorry. And I beg For your forgiveness. Jim. Dale, take you the rest of the way home. There was a party that seems heartfelt. Except he's calling the baseball game in the middle of a homerun call that is the imagine the worst timing for a home run ever during the middle of your apology. There was a sign right where the ball and I'm not making this up. It says Judgment free zone. Really? What's the video? 00, Iet's an ad for For Jim. I don't think you have to. Necessarily call the home run during the apology. You could do it afterwards. You finish up your apology. And then you could then say, because people will see it on television. People will have seen the home run. I mean, in radio, you have to, you probably would be required to call it. Calling the home right in like, I don't know. And it was, you know, generally not how you here home run call anyway, and he couldn't be animated. I don't understand The problem. Couldn't get on set in Vienna broadcast e about it because he had, you know, cycle down and you know, be sincere, either a motive, sincerity or fake it. Either way he had to do that. I pride myself and think of myself as a A man of faith is there's a drive in a deep left field by Castano's, it will be a home run. There you go. Yeah, eyes right. When the faith part comes out to? I don't know. Maybe this is sign from God. I don't know. VM. I don't I don't know if I don't know if you want to unnecessarily bring the faith peace in on this because that really has little to do with what the infraction was. Now. It actually sort of, depending on what your faith is a might take in a different direction there. So anyway, he makes his gay slur as related to with the word city. And I don't know what he meant way haven't really had an explanation of this have way. It's not like he's referring to a natural city. It's sort of like a like something that was looking at, like a group of things. Yeah, it's it's unclear, right? Whole things unclear. Yeah. Well ah! This. I find this to be one of those. Moments where there's going to be a cancellation, at least for a short period of time. I've noticed that a lot of people got canceled during the Me, too. Movement that weren't like the Criminal perpetrators or Harvey Weinstein and people like that people didn't quite raised to rise to that level. Some of them started. Come back. Louis CK is making his return. And Louis CK was accused of, you know, like glued acts in front of people who he invited up to his hotel room. That's a little different. Right now, and that's a whole other debts. That Z kind of interesting trip right there. For him. So one does wonder if you know People will make a a sup of the tongue out of the heart. Is an old broadcaster friend used to say I was just a slip of the tongue out of art as and that everything is to be just sort of taken away when you would say something like that. Not that In this moment, not in this part of American history. I get it. It's eight. Listen, he was dutiful in his apology had to do the right thing. I don't know if this is truly a career ender. But I think it's certainly a piece of dumb mastery of Ah, pretty high level because around an open microphone Around any kind of Mike from Kevin. What's the first thing you learn when you got into radio? How Mike situation. Is that what you're asking? Yeah. Yes. First thing you learn is don't say anything. Around a microphone. You don't want the whole world to hear, even if you assume the microphones are off because there's always a microbe could be turned on somewhere by somebody. In a broadcast situation. It is in a studio of is in a play by play Booth or whatever those air easily turned on remotely another plate by other people. Just sit down in the truck or in a control room or whatever. It is just an important thing to know. Very important thing to know..

"I need I need to know more about Evan Forty eight. So I started reading and he's super interesting background wise is like I think. He's French and his I think he has some North African, one of his parents in north, African and One of his other parents is I, think is a Scandinavian place but anyway to the point of the Babe. Ruth. Stuff we're talking about and not necessarily knowing when you look at somebody I looked at seven forty eight and I want to know more about them and there are no English language profiles about this man but there's enough out there that I was like this dude hell interesting I want to know more about him. Yeah. I saw the other day. I gotta be honest I. Wasn't sure I thought I knew, and then I saw. But I thought I didn't. I was not positive and then pulled up a picture of it was like Yep could go either way. It was the craziest thing from two different angles in the same game within seconds and that's how I ended up in a rabbit hole. I was like Oh is he wait hold on? Yeah. But let me tell you this. We not sure watching this. Let me tell you where they know exactly what his get down is for rance in France I feel I can look at him and people will immediately start doing the math on that they draw new blondes very true I I went into an instagram to and approve of many of his choices. Leave it at that. So many of these places. Are Not together on anything being recorded you're not together. It's awesome united together on things record in interested as hell. But also close to the line I know that you are talented enough to get close those lines and never cross it. I'm not. Ready to Rico thing I just feel like we should be able to be confused together like I'm not getting out here with no judgment none of this stuff about accusing him of anything I just got questions. I'm not the person who sympathizes with people who like rail against canceled culture, and whatever that is I think canceled culture means a lot of different things in it falls under and they they all get put under the same umbrella. Some things under the umbrella that I'm like that's the problem. Some things I'm under the umbrella like yachtsman sensitive but I don't rail against it and I don't necessarily feel bad for people who say some things and get in trouble. But in this situation, I feel like over the course of this show, somebody could clip one or several other things that were said it here if fortunately for me, I'm not the money known I'm the end friend. I used to I used to mock my homeboys all the time like when we go to Vegas. Run this plane crash is GonNa be like Dominique Fox and friends. Lose their life. I don't know why you think bad things happened into my career will help yours. It's not gonNA, help either of us. The best thing is both of us are supremely confident and have lots of different talent. So like best position cover from like, yeah. Yeah. I hear you an art. Yeah. My greatest salad however is the things that you can do with me I live at the marquee but I know but then it's rigo ain't nobody say bad about Rico. Is this I just don't know how this happened and nobody knows how it happened like it's kind of like whenever I don't know if you were listening when I was trying to figure out what race Dave Randall was. "In DC, where I am I, there are some fans who was pushing back when a lot of fans. But there are some fans was pushing back. I remember seeing on the local news there was a guy who just had. got. His. Whole truck skinned. Pardon, the Pun but I think that's a proper terminology. We get like all of them stickers and you put him on a car. He got a whole new skin put on his truck that match the old Washington football team logo, and he was on the news talking about heat on Su. He wants all his money back because they changed the name and now his truck has no more value as a black fan of plenty of black fans around here who somehow are not able to connect. Their own struggles with how this could be offensive to another group. Now man, that's always the worst right with that because a lot of leg fans that will all me about it when their name change they mad at me like I'm the one who did something wrong why are you? Still go ru four. Different Name and you still go ru four. Yeah. So that leads me to the question why you rooting for him in the first place that is Washington fans black fans of the Washington team that is such a complex discussion on. So many levels right because I. I've contended that the underrated story of the cowboys and what used to be called Redskins as a robbery is the fact that that's a robbery in the city and a big part of why it's a rivalry in the city is all the black people who refused route forming their root for the cowboys. Yeah. Absolutely fair. There's a lot of black cowboys fans in this area. Also, somewhat inexplicable, but you just hop on the best team at that point like I don't know or is it just the fact that they were rivals of Washington? Is that why they happen guess every city probably has a ton of cowboys fans. Let's say black people are the cowboys everywhere right and I was not around for when this happened. So I've been curious as to how exactly like was it really that they was just so flashy and fly with it in the seventies that it being carried over like my daddy I'm not I mean nowadays place they didn't have a football team, but like he tells the iceberg broke his heart. Is Bowl Ziebel's heartbreaking. Because he was a Dallas Cowboys, Fans Black Folks Everywhere Are Dallas cowboys fans if you were in Washington and your local team is the official team races, which is what they were through the nineteen sixties. The of. Lorraine's logo aside. They could have been the Washington wildcats and they still would have been the official team racism at the time. So like I root for of Texas, which has very similar legacy. raised. But I'm at age that was never really liked consistent and I wasn't from texts like I was from Texas probably wouldn't root for 'cause my day I mean like my dad was from Texas. That's what I mean like I've checks but I got my dad was rejected I probably wouldn't rule for because he'd been ruin against them and then I'd jumped on board. But at some point, a lot of black folks in the city they got down with them I mean it's your local team. I, get it everybody wants to put off for the Crib but whole budget folks is like now we're not doing that kind of saying well University of Maryland for similar reasons, right? Right. I mean that's still doesn't and I guess you can't answer this question. But like why do you root for the team? It's probably different for a lot of people for most people. It's like some civic pride like that's the name of the city that I'm from, and then maybe there's a history of relationship that you have grown up watching this team with your family whatever like there is some emotional ties, no one has ever with the exception of the cliche about the. Secretary in office picking the final four based on mascots like no point in the history of anything if anyone become a fan of a team because of the mascots of Wildwood fandom be threatened by the change of a guy now get doug it just doesn't make sense unless you just one of those things where it's just like you WanNa you WANNA cover up your racism by saying it just means something to me. Yeah. But I'm like how we races against the natives. Beef, do we have with them? In fact, we got decades decades maybe even centuries of black life in America tried to claim that we got some blood from them. I mean I. Don't know I'm looking at them. You might you have you got one of them DNA tests. It is entirely possible I look at people Baba's lineage and I'm like, yeah that could probably happen I. didn't ask about that. I've never everybody would be so curious about where they came from to be here now. Yeah. Don't do it. Now they use they hand those on their data over the law enforcement which yeah, don't don't you do it. I'M GONNA. Let my brother did I was so mad I'm like. Okay never committed no crops. Well, you can do it now because once they got brothers. Yeah. No, that's. All. Done. By days, coming crabs over. What companies just got buffalo I five billion dollars by the way. By billion billion. How did y'all fall this like I just don't understand how it is that people fail for this and some of them getting answers they don't want to tell nobody about like I. Don't think there's been nearly enough discussion about this. We don't hear nearly enough about people getting a test back. If Y foles find announced, got some black in them that they were not aware of I am positive y'all A. All coming back, Irish Italian and English right it all coming back. Some of Y'all are getting back full percent. You know what? I'm saying maybe I'm wrong but I feel like that's something that they would love to roll out like there is nobody there is no demographic of white people like if you're the liberal white person like you would be proud I feel like to roll out for like I got. I got ten percent if you're. If you're conservative white person I feel like you would love to screen shot that thing. So when you say something racist and somebody say you'd be racist six percent from Angola baby. Yes, it is except. You're saying though you saying you look at it as four point, six percent from Angola therefore, I'm allowed to say this where no no no. What that says is four percent four point six percent from Angola. y'All go say about me. And that is that is that is the house. Watson a lot or episode about a dude who got caught past you ever seen how? Bad. Do Pass it. It was it was a fascinating episode because they got the perfect dude right? Like he absolutely looked like he'd be a white man if you did not ask and then you look closer, it'd be like Oh look at that nodes, right? Okay. You was out here passing and so the plot was. Yes. So he he and his new. Yes. But let me say it is right now about Babe Ruth. Says has been brought up because I think the people think that the Homie Miro like invented this right like Beirut Dominican thing no. That was a long standing question about Babe Ruth being black. Day and age we look at a picture of Babe Ruth and we're like, okay, that's a white man. But if I showed you a picture of people that were considered to be black in Babe Ruth's Day. Babe Ruth is black according like I at least two to the is. He got the features. Route passing back when they added more discerning I've seen. Like who they had to be somebody like the red sox or the Yankees. The way we talked about the gay dudes like. This. The more hits your good man we have. Any. Imagine if he didn't come out like. Thirty five after already to hold run king and everything else and it came out like definitively the Babe Ruth was black like somebody did some expose..

"Like reds fans if you could get the oddest answers from them and ask him if they think this is something that the dude should really be fired for and it'll probably be over fifty percent. But I don't know about how much I feel like Cincinnati obviously more of a conservative type of place and then you control that city for baseball fans like I. Think it only gets older and more conservative I don't know this to be to be a fact necessarily, but I think that's probably safe to say if you're looking for some people who were not watching the DNC last night yes you could probably your numbers are pretty high if you're looking at Cincinnati natives who also don't miss a reds game and care about who the play by play guy. So pretty safe to say that they weren't tearing up watching deliver some impassioned speech, but they also got. A fairly strong fan base in Kentucky. That's right there on the river. Yeah that is a capital of sorts but not the type of capital that you're man Brennaman was talking about yeah. Yeah. No I'm just saying now also to be fair now, this I am googling and you can see me here in two thousand and eight Obama did win Hamilton County Cincinnati. ooh. says. You did win that. Now know about the county next door. You know what I'm saying like I don't know about that but Obama did. So there's been fair. So maybe I'm just saying there's a whole lot of ranch fans that are looking at this I. Don't think you need to do this like the worst thing that ever happened for the reds is if you had some fans tried to give some pushback nearline. No guys this as fight. Best.

"Insulted. The whole facet of society. Now, he needed to find the new Elton John Right as me Elton John's Gig like Oh, people think you're a homophobe. John Bell John as the did. A move so I feel like there's a business to be made because that's what happened with shack to in. In Papa John is like your Papa John was talking nonsense and started hurting their money and they're like, you know how we're GonNa fix this we're gonNA find the biggest black new we can time and throw some money A. Oh. All right they found the biggest Negro out here take the money for like who is the gay equivalent roll out there and they throw some money at him and and then Brennaman is good like see gave this money. Right. John I guess is the guy where is your Tony Dungee and of course, wildly erotic. Tony Dungy is capacity. Tony. Necessarily had to get caught in Airworthy to call Tony Dungy, you might get caught fighting. Dalton. All kinds of things it did back work Saudi Doug would be useless ally in the world right Oh. My Gosh, you fell into some real deep stuff, Tony Dungy can't help you out of it. If Tony Dungy dot long enough to reach down to pull you out of this cavern Tony, Dungy could pull him out of this. No we can't accept it accept. This is this not he's business cards. visit this particular wing of things Tony Dungy does not engage in that space. Yeah. It's like when you call a plumber because you got some damaging. Plumbing coming like actually this is structural situation. Pass you all my contract and Fred is gonNA. Be Able to handle this? I thought it was quite. Right here is like your houses flooded, but you call the fire department. That's that's exactly what Tony Dungy would do. With this case telling he would just pour more water on deployed. I don't see what the big deal is. Because somebody explained to me what he did. Wrong. Okay. Of those rare situations where you can't throw the Bible at and. That'll only make it worse. Yeah. Yeah that was actually with a top visit of Oban of faith. Out Let me tell you what words you need to avoid right now la- vindicates our. Time to take this into the pages to talk about is this is this is not the place that you to be I just can't obvious gay. Living booty that he must have bad. His booty just got just. Like this whole, all like Oh my God I gotTa keep calling the entity right Maggie gotta keep going through the rest of his end before we get to the place. Did they tell him during the in that it had happened. Did they waited till? It was over Oh Gosh. How they finish this, did he finished the the game? Oh no who stepped in. Apparently. Another dude that works on the broadcast was there in the guy who works with pre post game show because that was my question they hit and I didn't think about there'd be at a guy that was there you for the pre game show whatever. But as imagined him on the phone being like how fast can you get here? Because because look if he's not in the building. Have like. A phone tree is other like this like just in case of the habits to the play by play man, we gotta go to somebody else but if the person is not in the building, who else do you call in the city in the middle of the game to be like Yo, we need to. Finish this out. The NFL I forgot how long ago this was. But at some point, I remember the NFL with touring where no announcers and they just let it ride at some point they could have done that also is just like you know what we get. Here we go make a technical difficulties call. Go play this game with a natural sounds of wow. I just like it like when you hear it and it's dead silent silent dead. Silent. and. Then you hear that that was the other part that got me is that we didn't hear anything about what the conversation was that precipitated this happening and I wanNa know what that conversation was right because after this happened I mean I assume that he is not called in Kansas City one of to paraphrase one of the gay capitals of the World I don't think that is the place that he was talking about and I went and I looked on their schedule and I did not see San Francisco or Atlanta so I do not know what they had. "We're doing interview joining us now check them out undefeated dot com various television programmes Donald Foxworth. What's going on happy to be here every time I almost forget you time it up just right to remind me of that name goes like. After three months like I forget that Albert, I was one of the funniest moments I had a espn I, forget about it up until we set up. Their own act right there were the. House. One Summer Hey, it's another day in the life last night. He's May Brennaman. Married. Yeah, I thought. Young, this is what I want to know about his right because I feel like just about everything about this is pretty self evident right? Like I said appeared be ridiculously outraged whatever. But they pulled a man off his job in the middle of the shift. If nothing else it appears they his employers taking this seriously. I just want to know what it had to be like the moment that somebody in their booth realized that went over the air. Why did it see my heating? Realize it Seemed like he was unsure what he was apologizing about it seems pretty straightforward. Had to be pretty simple. If you are one of the employers who saw it happen you gotta be like, oh. Yeah. This is easy. It's not what I'm tough situation. Obvious. You can't think of a time I think except for maybe that time to announce for the Tigers. got into a fight and boof. Can't think of time that they were like, oh no, you got to go right now there's no time to wait. No No, no Dodo you have got to go at this moment. I. So it's easy and I think I'm susceptible to it also is like jump on and you pile on this is Blah Blah Blah Blah but I find myself move into the next part of that cycle more quickly like trying to figure out like put myself in that situation understand how someone could come to do or say something like that because everything that I say in private is not something that I would say on air but something like that is not something I would say in they. That is absurd part because like I could forgive somebody for light using a bad word or calling an insole and somebody using some of the some flying to call somebody saw this like I can imagine myself in a commercial break not realize that we back like man that like. I might do but what I would never. Just feeling comfortable enough. It's not even like he was afraid or he was in trouble for getting on air he like he felt comfortable saying this into a live microphone that other people could hear like there's somebody listening to it. Yes. That is what blows my mind. Even. I understand being alone watching TV and you say something bio and you get down to back winning the game but he was like, no, I need. My people to hear is yeah, right. That's an HR play even if it doesn't go over to air, right like somebody might go tell on you even if this does not go over to air and not only that it went to air a he immediately just went right into third whatever it happened to be right wit. To just like all right we go keep it going and it was somebody in there that was like, oh no or or or did he go like this? They didn't think you win over the air and then whoever's job it was to go through the account a look for who's sitting in a question for the next inning under HASHTAG ask Tom. Right, right right. They were just trying to get ready to get some engagement you know for the broadcast then they looked down and they're like. Oh that went over the air everybody who was working on at broadcast their cell phone blew up whether other people that they work more their friends and family like the whole room was probably shaking because all the cell phones vibrating because that has to be that's the modern equivalent of I guess in the back in the day, you just had a red phone or something and best get into the booth like this everyone can feel the room shaking because everyone's like. Doing yes. Like I remember what I would at t shirt on Mike and Mike back. And erasing wouldn't to like the second break did they were like yeah everybody was talking about your shirt like it took a while for them to realize that that had become thing and I remember how nervous that had people. Right we got to call in bright the suits that wasn't even at work that day they will call it in to figure out what the hell was going on, and that was for that right imagine everybody's phone that blew up in that moment like what are we going to do? He's going to apologize right now and then we're going to take him off the air. All right. It's time for you to apologize and he's like, oh, how exactly do I go about apologizing for this and all he thought about was I got to save my job right and so his logic on how to save his job was not to like fully apologized would he said no, his logic saving his job was fully apologizing to his bosses. Is Like I want to apologize to the people who signed my checks? No no no. You can do that in private. You Ain't got to do that part on television. You you. You got other people you need to clean up with. Are you sure that that was his goal like that? That seemed like his that was not his goal. I mean I guess I also. Assume that people are smarter than they actually are and assume that logical than more logical than they actually because it doesn't seem to me that. Five seconds of thought that you would think the best way to save your job if the pilot your boss, the best way to save your job is to be contrite and humble and look like a pathetic dog like Best Best Blue Da da his first move was i. don't even know if I'm GonNa be wearing this hits it again, his everything for him which straight to just job saving mode but not the broader jobs saving mode, right? It was just like, I, need. To get this right with my bosses because his job especially that particular job ain't never been endanger. He's Marty Brennaman son like I don't know if you know that his dad is legendary reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman like this. This is who he is. This is why tile Brennaman is into place that he's in and so he was just like, Oh, I need to apologize to these people that have made as nepotism possible, and that's calling product in the course of all of this. About the people that the only thing he thought about was how he hit embarrassed the boss. Let's quantum leap this thing. So me and Ryan Clark. We're talking about leap a great show we've been talking about that a lot lately. So I'm a quantum leap. This thing for you let's say the moment after that happened, you get quantum leap into his body and you have to figure out how to save your job at that moment like you didn't say stuff but you got dropped into their like I don't think the way that he started. It was necessarily wrong just like I don't know if I'm having my job but then what's the next move? Honestly I think he would have been better off. Just running away as soon as they told him that it happened just get up and leave. All right. So you they quantum leap you into his body yes..

S. C. Austin Jackson says last year's first writer Jonah Williams will be back after missing his rookie season but that won't entirely fix the Bengals offense of line Jackson today it'll speed off the edge which will help borough settle in with his new office if you are wondering he had a linebacker going at twenty one twenty four before the Bengals and then at thirty seven after the Bengals second round pick if you're thinking wide receiver he has a wide receiver going at number eleven twelve thirteen twenty twenty two and thirty two he's got six wide receivers going in the first round the Bengals pick at thirty three then he has another wide receiver going at thirty four and another wide receiver going at thirty six so again he goes often to tackle with the second round pick at number thirty three Austin Jackson out of USC big Duke young duty he's only twenty turned twenty one in may highs in early entrant entrant into the NFL draft six five three twenty two left tackle described by scouts is rolling gifted a true left tackle treats a loaded with athletic ability and talent but still raw does have nimble feet a dancing bear is Dave Lapham would say and needs to have that athletic ability developed and harvested Austin Jackson remember the name I was struck by something I saw on Ifill network today Ian Rapoport talking about Joe burrow in talking about the meeting that Joe burrow had with the Bengals involving Mike brown well here's an interesting note in here about the all important Joe burrow meeting with the bangles at the combine Mike brown the owner who is still very much involved in day to day operations really still runs the show in Cincinnati I am told that brown was in fact in the meeting.

"Marty Brennaman Danny grades you boys called it what are your thoughts on this big Reds win today thank you very much Tommy well I guess we saw the reversal of trends so to speak last night it was a red who rallied late to tie it up only to lose a game Daddy and today it was a red who had the lead all day long before the Braves came back to tie it up within the Reds come out on top of the three run home run by Tucker Barnhart yeah huge huge hit from talker and and and what kept that any going is the rookie error Stevie's Aquino he had a great at bat to out hit with got a single demi glace is got a single to give Tucker that chance but yeah I was a definitely a great performance from Sonny gray spoiled by the bull pen a little bit but I mean what can you say about how good Sonny was today well I think from my money is one of the top five pitching performances I've seen this season by a red started for him to pitch the way he did for seven innings when you look back on those innings it he gave up a first inning leadoff double a **** your junior got out of that gave up a leadoff double to Austin rally in the fourth inning no problem the first two batters reach in the sixth inning they hung with them and they were rewarded with him pitching out of still another jam but for the most part he seemed to be in control pretty much all day making all of his pitches and of course he has great mound presence every time he goes out there you know what it's it's amazing watching him as much as I've got to see him this year he just continues to get better better when guys are on base when he's in those pressure situations and what he did feeling his position made a great play what he did with the bat he did everything today he did everything except get a win but the red get to go home with the big W. here again in Atlanta yeah so they get displayed here and now they go back home to take on the angels they got Louise Casteel on the mound tomorrow night against a young man of course fifty for the first time in the big leagues and Patrick sand of all and should be an interesting to game get together without American League west ball club yeah it is the game Louise Casteel get the pitch to Mike trout and Albert Pujols well you don't want to miss that there's a chance to get their person you better get their person well the rest will have a happy playing heading on back to Cincinnati it look very very dim in that night Dinning and of course they came out of it we greatly especially with Robert Stevenson striking out Adam duvall with runners at second and third the winning run a third and then getting tensioner Brian began to balance out and then the whole run by Tucker born hard to win it tomorrow night back against the angels in the opener of two six four Redlegs intent Tommy back to you all right thanks a lot Marty hand that Reds game recap was brought to you by first financial bank we go beyond banking by putting you first first financial bank member FDIC we have a check and scores from around Major League Baseball with the read post.

"Yes. Indeed. We are. We're not just here. He's damn thin. Also known as Ralph read Ricky flick, whatever you call. Pretty much anything. But we're here every Thursday night for a we like to call the reality check. And we try to cover off, you know, maybe a little different angle what you've been hearing about all week long. But I gotta be honest with you, Fred nothing nothing has captured the imagination, and perhaps the hearts of the Tri state and the entire baseball world like the big story yesterday, which is carried over to the big story today. Absolutely. And that is the hall of Famer that's one thing that we're not Morty Brennaman announcing that this the twenty nineteen red season will be his last year number forty six think about that. Thirty percent of all the games that the reds have played in their history not on radio, but he's called thirty percent of those. And it's our pleasure to welcome in somebody who knows a little about Marty Brennaman sawn and broadcaster extraordinary one Thom Brennaman, Tom how we doing tonight. How you doing? Hey, boss. It's been awhile since we've run into each other at the UDF, but I gotta tell you. Yup. Yup. Yesterday. Social media, basically crashed with the with the news and the announcement by your dad that he was going to make this his final season, everybody, just shedding a tear collectively. I gotta figure you have a smile ear to ear because you know, your dad gets to now go do all of these other things that he has certainly earned the right to do. It's funny. You say that because I was one of the people I think probably in his life. And I don't know how many there are. But I was trying to talk him out of it. And. Yeah. I think it, you know. A lot of people like you're talking about. They know Marty Brennaman is being Marty Brennaman. I, you know, I'm no different than you. Or anybody else in the world? Sign of somebody in you know. Have a father in law who has done a lot of research on retirees thought about it for years and years out in Arizona, and he's son all these kind of these research in about people who retire, and you know, how long do they live after they retire? All the tortoise scuffed, it I would never thought about and just because my father in law had done it. I kind of rolled that into my dad's thinking when he first kind of brought it up with three years ago. We were in Milwaukee. I'll never forget as long as I live and. I talked to him about it then and then a year later in Pittsburgh. And then this year, we're in Milwaukee again, and I could tell that. He really meant it this time and even as recently as a month ago. Are you? Sure, this is what really what you wanna do. You wanna go maybe to thirty games forty games kind of staying in you know, a little bit. And he just like I'm done. And he was you know, he's never been a guy who's a big traveler and he went overseas and he talked about a little bit yesterday. He went to France and Italy for the first time and when he came back off that trip. He didn't really want to go on the trip. He wasn't interested in France. Or Italy never has been and when he got back. He's like I'm done. Yeah. I was going to say when you when he said to you. I mean it this time. What do you think it was because I he mentioned yesterday about how you know. He he really miss it because he loves going to spring training. Yup. Yup. Do you think could it be like the old the boxing world? You know, I'm done. And then he goes, maybe not are you really think this is it. I I I really don't know what the end of the day what kind of put him over the top. But he just. You know, the game world the whole kind of thing has changed so much in recent years, and I kind of feel like thank God is great health. I was talking with a friend of mine the other day Marchenko who's an attorney in town. And he's represented my dad for years and years and years on his contract after Ruben, Kathy retired. And you know, Mark Yankee, you know, what I think you're looking at this totally the wrong way. You gotta be happy for your dad, and this is forty eight hours ago. And I'm like, you know, what you're probably right and he shared with me a story about his father about how you got sick at fifty eight asks you were three years. We're really weren't very good. He's like your dads in great health. He happy in marriage. She's happy in his life. Let him go. Enjoy it. Kind of rang true to me that you know, what he's exactly right going joy it, and that's a great point. And Thom Brennaman kind enough to join us with a different perspective. I think you've heard everybody with their big outpourings of other thoughts and memories of Marty Brennaman is the is the voice of the ranch for so long. You know, as you talking about that, Tom I think back to my dad's retirement, and he was ready to go. Do what was next, but his thing was golf, and I understand that traveling probably was similar for your dad as was golf never wanted to do it. Did it then got hooked on it? And so okay, lots of things to do. My dad didn't really ever get to travel. So what ended up happening is he retired played a bunch of golf gave my mom crazy. Get him out of the house enough. But I would tell you this about fifteen years into his retirement he got called back into where he used to work to do some consulting. And I think he found that as or more, I think rejuvenating and exciting and he turned his brain clicked back into gear. And I wonder at some point down the line. Does does your dad does he find that thing within the organization or do you think he's just like you said finish completely with the game? I really don't see how that's going to be possible for him. Yeah. You know, it's great points. Great question. I don't know the answer to that. And you know, I I I started having this conversation three years ago as I talked about a second ago when we were in Milwaukee one day, you know, I mean, I sat down with them we rarely ever have breakfast together on the road or go out a Cup of coffee.

"Unlike any other Ladell and Silvy on ESPN one thousand thirteen Greco's in studio right now every Monday Wednesday and Friday brought to you by Chicago. Cut steakhouse to see Bob Costas is retiring from NBC after forty years trying to upstage Marty Brennaman mardi retiring after forty six years reds. And I love the news story about Brennaman says the man who calls come fans the most obnoxious people in the world is retired nailed it. And Tom's been doing reds games. Forever. T has. Yeah. The story earlier. I sent I ask merkin for Marty's number because I want to send mardi a nice heartfelt text. I listened to Marty and Joe nuxhall the late Joe nuxhall growing up in Cincinnati. With the big red machine was tender roundup. Third and heading home. That was great American gave me a number Senate tax, fifteen minutes later after pouring my heart out in the texts. Somebody texting back said haha wrong number. Sorry. I'm not mardi Hugo. I remember when I was in college, and I drove down to Cincinnati. And you know, what I just wanted to be sports caster. There's Marty Brennaman at the bar in this restaurant, and they got up the nerve to go talk to him. He couldn't have been nicer. He was the most encouraging gentlemen, ever sent me on my way, unless you told him you're a cub fan, and then he would ripped. I was gonna tease it for forty five. Now, we're on the subject he called the show. Yeah. So Waddle Waddle told the story today. He texted the wrong number. This is a true story. He he merkin did not then get him on. He was listening. I don't know why daughter lives in Chicago. And she listens to the station quite a bit. And she was in town because Marty was going to make the announcement. And they were listening to the show lights supposedly. That's how great is that. So then he told us to reach you guys. Have he wants to kiss and make up with cubs fans? Take a listen this from earlier, I hope when I come to Wrigley this summer that the cubs fans will let bygones be bygones, it'd be nice to me. And I in turn will be nice to. That's true. Yes. Happened and it's over with. And and I don't I don't even think about that. When I come into Chicago anymore. Yes, he wants to survive through retirement. It was all part of the gig to you got. Announcer a kind of a bit. But. He's the best. He's great Tom's. Awesome. Kostas? Of course, we'll keep doing MLB network and a bunch of other stuff waiting for other offers. I mean, he's he's the absolute machine there's nobody better than Bob. He's been the voice of many sports the Olympics. The NBA for a time Olympic coverage. Some sun him. I thought he basically going to have pink eye double pink. Now, isn't that? What didn't Mike to Rico took over? He did a duties. And did a great job. I thought he handed the torch them. ABC out him. When you read is the torch in her right knee. Hey, what's on your mind? Most today is the Dan Lozano statement about Manny Machado on the White Sox. Is that? Yeah. I thought it was very poignant. I mean, here's an agent who's basically had it with, you know, Bob, Nightingale and BUSTER only and everybody else going back and forth. It's a seven year deal for one seventy five. It's an eight year deal for over two. It's just back and forth. Just like, you know, stop just stop which I hope this is done by SOX fest. It's gotta be next week. Please. Why does it have to be because I'm tired of hearing? Gary editon sign socks they didn't know what they're doing by SOX fest. They really do because then spring training is two weeks away after that. Do you? Tell him the debate we were having with cap. Well, I I said on cap show cap, and I were talking and cap said to me after he had talked with I think Jim bowdoin. That's Jim bowdoin was telling him that, you know, all of these players are wanting shorter-term deals or they may alternately want player options. And I said the cabinet said, look, I don't care Manny Machado wants out after two years on I'm on the south side. I give him a contract if even if he leaves after two years of cab says absolutely not they're not ready to win now. So you're paying Manny Machado for two years. And then he could get up and leave right? When you're getting ready to win. And I so again, what's the downside to signing. Manny Machado to a deal that would allow him to get out of said deal after two years that he's not gonna be around for when you are ready to win while he'll be you could resigning. The White Sox could use a boost vac rent Ritchie's this deal. Let's..
