"The arizona. State recruiting scandal continues so paul weeks ago Ataman brennaman tight ends. Coach was placed on administrative leave being connected to the recruiting of violations. That are being alleged now. On on monday they have now added wide receiver coach skill in. Db coach chris hawkins to pay administrative leave so training camp is underway. Asu is now down. Three assistant coaches at of course makes you wonder who might be next. Okay so what's interesting to me is adam. Brennaman was the first one who was really put out there in terms of he initially when he was a jay. J's don't make hardly any money so the idea that adam brennaman was bankrolling some of this seemed implausible if not downright laughable And then the two other assistants who are also starting out their careers as you mentioned. Both of those is to think that they were were masterminding. This situation on causally scheme. But that's what it feels like from. You know from the reporting doug and i have done some of the people we've heard from and so the idea that these three guys at the beginning of their career not being paid much money would be the ones funding all this and orchestrating. The title of the show is a little bit misleading, and I've had people come up to me and said I don't know why they call it Jones of Brennaman all baseball because you rarely ever talk baseball. Well, that's not true, but we do talk about other things. And that's the reason why I've tried to impress upon Joe Frederick on Scott, right heart. To make it. Jones and Brennaman on anything today, the anything has to do with your favorite music or music's. If you have more than one type of music that you like, Okay, and I think you know this. I was kind of still lemon eighties rock kind of guy. Yeah. I mean, I like Bon Scott. Although I think bond died, and we wouldn't be a man and I were talking about Bon Scott the other day. That's amazing. I bet you were we talking about? Swear to God we were talking about, Don doctor because he was a musical genius. Yeah. Undock and Cinderella journey. She liked all the same stuff. "Brennaman and Jones on baseball, presented by United Dairy farmers and brought to you in part by rookie wasting, recycle it and by Encore Technologies on 700 W L. Jabba the home of the Cincinnati Reds. Pressure Reds came off of road trip in which they won five out of nine. These world trip completed Sunday in Colorado, and they did it the hard way by winning back to back ball game Saturday Sunday now their own facing the Giants game number two tonight. The thing that's interested me about this club. Is it over and above everybody in Major league baseball as you and I talked today, they are seven and two. And extra inning ballgames. Nobody is that good. The Dodgers at last report will one in five and extra Any games in this ball club, just seemingly for whatever the reason excels. Once the game goes to extra innings, and I throw something at you, and this is going to sound rather sappy. Maybe a little corny, really got to do it. I gotta get going on. This team has really good. Team chemistry. It certainly does. You have to admit, and I hated to come with that. But I'm just looking. Let me let me paraphrase something that, Castellano said after an extra inning win against the Rockies, he said, I believe in friendship and bonds and pulling for each other, not just waiting for the last out types of relationships we have in our dugout. I think that says a lot shows an awful lot and and I maintain your course I've said before my favorite team of all time was the 1990 club that won the World Series. They had the best chemistry of any team I've ever been around. And if people don't think chemistry is important of baseball, I happen to because 162 ball games, although their clubs that have Have gone against that. The Asian the early seventies ale each other when I won a World Series. I don't think you can continually do that. That's the reason why I'm so impressed with the way this club has obviously bonded together to win games in the matter in which they've done it. That Reds team that I play 86 87 88 chemistry, horrible We'll be going to be back with more. University.

"What matter two or three days shy of two months, but Um, I think we'd all be willing to You make that type of sacrifice and keep everything in place of social distancing and and the shelter in place and everything else that we do. Um, if we knew the other shadow of a doubt that would that would that would, um That would open the door for a lot of good things to turn around and happen. Um, I hope I hope I'm right. I really did. I did, too. I pray that you're right. That would. That would be something that I think we'd all be pleased with. I really do when it comes to the social distancing thing. I mean, Marty, I'm not quite where you're at. Age wise, but I'm getting close on. I was thinking about These people who are ignoring blatantly ignoring the calls to social distance to stop the spread of this, and we've never seen anything like this. And there's never been a response. Anything like this to any kind of Global pandemic, and we've had several. I mean, you look at SARS and you look out murders and you look at Ebola's and and all the other stuff that has come our way as human beings trying to face the fire of Mother nature. We've never seen anything like this. I was thinking about the people that just blatantly ignore. The admonitions of government officials, whether you believe them or not. I have lived to be the rightful age. I am right now because I never took unnecessary chances. If somebody warned me about something, I mean, I've never jumped out of a perfectly good plane with the parachute. I don't know if you've done that or not have you would I did not know. Um and I think about all the things that I've subjected my my person and my body to in my life. Is that? Why would why would I add another threat to my livelihood? You know, I don't have the dare devil spirit in me, you know, and I don't think I don't think that it's patriotic. I don't think that it's brave. Just go out about your business. When you're being told that to stop this, you need to, so I've been voluntarily doing what we've been asked to do as citizens. There are parts of me that question it sometime, and I'm skeptical about it. But you know why? Why subject yourself to a possibility of something that could kill you? I mean, And I guess that's the thing. Everybody has to balance out. How do you come down on that morning? Well, I I I I choose to give the people in a position. To have knowledge far greater about a situation. In fact, in case in this case we're talking about. Coronavirus coronavirus situation and they have access to information that I don't. Um I'm still believed that they know far more about this thing and they're talking about and I don't say that. From an anomalous standpoint, I think that they're they have information that could be good information. That that you know about about, uh, the culmination of this Friday search for some type of vaccine. Um, just a multitude of different things. So if they tell me, uh, you know you're going to be best serve you and your family by staying in, um, except for Going out for the essentials. You need to distance yourself When you out with people. I'm I'm gonna do it. I'm not going to second guess him. I'm not going. To test their knowledge by doing something stupid. Um, I read a story the other day, and you probably heard the one about the father and, um, in in the main, rather Massachusetts. Whose son was down in, uh in Texas on a guess it's spring break, and the old man begged and pleaded with him to come home. And the kid refused to and sending pictures of he and his buddies having a big time. And the kids to college kid. And when the kid arrived home Uh, this car was in the driveway, and it was filled with all the necessary essentials that one needs. If they're gonna be somewhere alone to get started, they had filled his car up with food and clothing and everything else. And they refused to allow him back in the house. He went back to his apartment off the campus of Springfield College or Springfield University and in Massachusetts, and the father said, I just simply could not allow him to come back in the house. Oh, that sounds like a responsible parent to me. Listen, Marty, I'm gonna take a break and we'll come back. You can hold on for for a few minutes. We'll be right back. I asked about Bauer and muscleman Furman, and he said the Sox would probably even leap the Yankees if they were to sign Trevor. But they're not going to sign Doctor Tender one right After about 10 to 1. In most places, they are Dodgers Robinson, the favorite Yankees. And then the Padres. And then in most places, white socks and Braves are right there kind of neck and neck and, like the tender 1 12 the one that most books because he spent a minute Please visit, but he's not in trouble. But you really give it back. I don't know There's I don't sign there's Han trying to get Nelson Cruz. He's nears rise, Dorf. No tapping the hand. That's enough spending. We've just been $54,000,900. We talked about Red's fantasy camp, which has been Postpone in 2021 push to 2022 because of covert. But ah, Jack was the manager of my team in 2006 that I played a light on the team with my dad. We were the power Jax. We won the championship, talked about fantasy camps. We talked about Hank Aaron and the home run. He gave up on opening day to Hank that tie the all time record talked about Don Sutton. Hey, talked about Marty Brennaman some really good stuff, and I asked him about his 1973 season. Ray didn't just win 19 games he made 40 starts He had. I think 16 complete games, seven shut outs and he threw 293 innings. He said, Yeah, with Sparky. I don't know how I did that spark. He was Captain Hook. It's in podcast form. 700 wlw dot com Alright? This. This popped into my head on Friday with sadly, the passing of Hank Aaron. And I've been thinking about it ever since. And I thought tonight it was worthy of maybe a top occurs maybe a segment or so with your phone calls, and I've been reflecting on since the start of 2020, the number of baseball Hall of Famers we have lost. Um, alkaline. Tom Seaver. Whitey Ford. Bob Gibson. Lou Brock, Joe Morgan, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, Hank Aaron, and we conclude manager Tommy Lasorda, but nine players Nine players some of the greatest in the history of the game. And I got to thinking about, uh, Justin Amazing scene at Great American Ballpark during the All Star game in 2015. If you remember around that Major league Baseball didn't online vote, where fans had to vote for The greatest player and their team's history. Was a season long campaign up to the All Star break. And from there every team's vote. The 30. Was then presented to the fans for an online vote of the four Living legends, the four greatest living legends in Major League Baseball. Remember that scene when they walked the four out onto the field locked arm in arm? And it got me thinking about this. Hank Aaron was one of the four that night. Great American ballpark. Honored is one of the four living legends. As of right now. Who do we consider? The four greatest living baseball players. That's a hell of a list. I just write off of iconic players that have passed away. Who are the four greatest living baseball players right now. Give you three in a blink of an eye. I could use your help on the fourth. Assuming you agree with my three I'll give you a phone number. 5137491 7800 the big £1.782 80 Auntie, I'm curious to see how this is going to break down kind of demographically based on age who you've seen what you think of them. My three automatically. Willie Mays. Johnny bench. And Ken Griffey Jr. The fourth. I think is where the conversation begins. That night in 2015, a great American ballpark, the four figures walking out locked in arms. Hank Aaron. Johnny bench. Willie Mays..

"Of Fame pitcher about Red's fantasy camp in about Hank Aaron and about Don Sutton and about opening day 1974 facing Hang care, and he got in some shots and Marty Brennaman after Marty fired shots at him last week in the back of worth, and in that friendship, that in podcast form at 700 wlw calm. I've also written about the Hall of Fame. The voting process. The case for bonds and Clemens the case for Scott Rolen, and more all at 700 wlw dot All right, let's begin here and I'll open up the lines right out of the Shu. Because I want to talk some reds that was a solid hour of baseball from 6 to 7. It was predominantly Hall of Fame. Lets do reds Now you've had a chance to let it sink in and process. The fact that Marcus Simeon is out Andrelton Simmons is out. The Korean Star shortstop is out. Freddy Galvis is out. And the Reds are currently out a shortstop. We know the issues with the offensive year ago they hit 2 12 1 of the worst offenses in the history of rights baseball. We know what the obvious upgrade was for this team in the off season to get a shortstop. The musical chairs We talked about last night it spends and it spends in it. It stops and seats or grabbed, and now it stops and and the Reds are or left looking, and they don't have anybody. Phillies also need somebody. That leaves Didi Gregorius as The loan for the most part, the lone free agent option at shortstop. They're certainly trade options is a possibility. But I think we all agree and the Reds have made this clear. That's why they're pursuing shortstop Jose Garcia. They love him. They just don't love him enough Right now. The put him in a position to be in everyday shortstop in Major League baseball in 2021. They didn't really want to do it last year, they eventually had to. They did it, and it was tough to watch. It's got a glove. There's no question about that. He batted 67 times. Last year, he struck out 26 times He hit 1 94. He played in 24 games. He walked once. You want once in 24 games. Again. They love him. Perfect, perfect world. He is their opening day shortstop of 2022. But no team with hopes dreams, aspirations of being in contention in 2021. Is going to feel the team with Jose Garcia at shortstop. The young man has not taken in it bad at double A. He hasn't taken it back at Triple A They jumped him from high a last year and three men. The deep end of major league baseball, double A is the most important development level of a minor league baseball player. He blew right past that to the major leagues. Kyle Farmer. Everybody likes He's not an everyday shortstop. He's just not. I mean, they nontendered him to begin with. They sign him to a split contract. He makes exit the place in the majors this year he makes except spends a place in the minors This year. He's versatile. He can play multiple positions, but he's not an everyday shortstop, and he certainly can't hit well enough. He certainly can't hit right handed pitching well enough to be considered a legitimate everyday shortstop in Major League baseball. Oh, by the way, he's played Ah, just short of 90 innings at the position, and he will be 30 in the upcoming season again. If you have hopes and dreams and aspirations of a contending in a division you don't have Kyle firmer as your everyday shortstop. So riddle me this Batman. One of the Reds do Jon Heyman says the number is looking at two years. 30 million. Sell Jim Boden today on the athletic guest. Two years 24 million. Again back to that perfect world. The Reds could get somebody plug him in for this year is a stopgap the bridge and then hand things off the Jose Garcia in 2022. The Reds got the worst, arguably the worst production of any team in major league baseball last year at shortstop, Depending on which metric. Do you look at it was the Reds of the worst or the Pirates? The worst And if the Pirates were the words the Reds with the second worst They need a shortstop. What do you want him to do? We'll run through some scenarios is we come back and grab some of your calls? 5137491 7800, the big £1.700 on a TNT were going to learn something very interesting about this team about this ownership. "74, will you let me see what happened that I seem to recall a home run of certain significance? No, no different than any other year. He had six off of May. I think in my career, uh it was just, uh It was like playing in the world. Syriza You know, everybody in the world came to see Hank Aaron hit 7 14. And I didn't let him down. It was You know, I think Vice President Ford was there. But kun was there. They're all kinds of people were there. And it was a packed crowd. And I thought everybody is pulling for the Reds until I went three and one and Hank and everybody, not everybody, but a lot of blue boots were coming out of the stands. And I backed myself into what I call upon. Uh Uh, My mind just went blank when an obvious pitch situation and I threw it and he knew is obviously coming because he hit it over the wall, you know? I am. Uh, there was no The only thing I didn't like his first swing in the year, and there's two men on and I was down, read enough and in the first any but I tell everybody that didn't last long because You're gonna have hours later Sit in the clubhouse and we won the ball game, And that was the main thing. Absolutely. I talked with Marty Brennaman on the show last week about this. He he mentioned you and I get the sense He's giving you some grief. Every now and then. Over the years about that home run. Is that true? Well, Yeah, But what was he doing here? Sitting up in a comfortable here doing what? He does best running off the mouth, you know, s so you know. But he doesn't know anything about being on a baseball field being an athlete, you know, so But whatever Marty and I get on each other all the time, but He ought to be happy. That was his first year, his first game. I mean, how much more exciting can you be? Is an announcer and making, you know, bringing up 7 14 to tie Babe Ruth's record. The first thing you did about that, you know But I'm I got him on the road. Tol Holla fain Think about it. It's a great way to look at it. You know, it's funny. You mentioned I looked it up today. You actually you gave up five home runs to Hank in your career that ties for the most with five other guys. I'm gonna give you the names. You ready for the names of other guys. You gave up five home runs, too. Ready? Oh, yeah. Well, thank you very much for looking at stuff. Willie McCovey. Yeah, People bad. Bobby Bonds. Me, mon Sunday. Yeah. Nate Colbert. Nate Colbert. Cesar Sedano on a new C C. Yes, he hit me pretty good and Dusty Baker. That's a pretty strong group. Yeah, I mean, there's nothing no shame and given up a home run to a home run hitter. That's right, and all those guys were home run in earlier on. Tell people there is no shame in giving up a home run to Hank Aaron. Back when we played You know, we had a respect for each other. You hit a home run. You ran the bases. And if you notice all the films You have on hanker and hitting home runs. He runs the bases that the same pace all the time, and he doesn't flip his bath. He doesn't give a fist nicest shot, but That's the way the game's changed that I'm not real happy about, but that's where it goes. A zoo. You know, we've sadly lost Somebody Hall of Famers over the last year, So including just last week, Don Sutton, the former Dodger, you were. You were in the Dodgers organization originally, and we're with Don, and obviously you then watched his career developed. What do your memories of Don Sutton Well, I played with him. I played with him in Albuquerque in a minor legs, and he was called up to the big leagues. Shortly after that. The thing I remember about him, and it's been in the papers, he grabbed a baseball. He's never missed to start to me. He was the type of picture that you would No. Well about He had a great curveball. But he showed up every day kept you in the ballpark and he was a good picture. He knew how to pitch. And when you control your second pitch for a strike any time you want to Which he could. Uh hey, we're going to be successful. You know you through. I think they said over 200 games. Hey, didn't miss the start and he pitched for 23 years s. So he's Mr Consistent, Nice guy jacking and looking at your your stats today. I've always had one season in particular. Jump out. It just boggles my mind in 1973. You made 40 starts. You completed 16 of them. You had seven shut outs and you threw 293 innings. Holy cow. Yet. Well, with Sparky Anderson being your manager. It's even more impressive. That's right. Because that was Captain Hook. Yeah, well, I don't know what happened that year, but I was on and he went with me as long as he could. And it was just one of those things. I just had a good year at everything going. But you know if if I had a good year The team had a good year and with the team I played with It made me much. He admit it much easier to pitch well, when you had the defense behind you that I had in the offense, so the confidence and Johnny Bench had a lot to do with that. You know, I was talking today with a couple of guys and they asked me about Johnny Benson. You know, we work very well together, but only through two pitches fastball in a curve ball, So we didn't have to be genius to figure this out. You know if I could put down one finger and I didn't want it, then he put down two fingers. You know what the best thing was, You know, location. I didn't have to worry about people stealing bases, and I didn't have to worry about Throwing the ball in the dirt when I was ahead in the count, because Johnny could block.

And then, of course on 37 16, and you know the rest. But that was Marty's first game and there to witness history is as Hank Aaron Henry Aaron tied Babe Ruth's record. Go on to beat that obviously, too. On, You know, that's what remember from baseball fan's perspective here in Cincinnati. Um, but you know, it was a social movement before social justice is the thing he was fighting for this and the one I'll leave you this comment as remember the passing Hank Aaron Day. So he tells this story back in the early 19 fifties, and then he was playing for the Indianapolis clowns of the Negro League. And they were having an office, a rain delay or whatever it might be. He was in a restaurant behind the stadium there in Indy. And they were having breakfast as a teen. And as they waited for the rain to stop, so they go to the ballpark and get ready for the game that afternoon, they heard. Plates breaking in a kitchen. And he said that was the worst sound I've ever heard in my life. I still even those later years can can remember in my mind that sound of breaking glass and even when he heard things break throughout his life to make him cringe because what they were doing then in the early 19 fifties in that restaurant Is that in and I think they're in D. C at the time As a matter of fact, so here they are in Washington. Land of the free home of the brave. And they were destroying the plates. They were actually breaking the plates. That had touched the forks. The forks that had been in the mouths of black men. He said that if dogs have eaten off those plates over Washington used them, but because they were black, they actually physically destroyed the plates. That Henry Aaron and his teammates eight on on that day. Has someone who wasn't alive back then. In being relatively older now. Can't even fathom that I can't even Can't even get my mind around that thinking. So, Yeah, We've got a lot of stuff. A lot of things We have to do it make things fair. There's no doubt about it. There's issues of accountability as well. There's a lot of factors in this whole thing. Not making excuses. But going, you know, for those who believe, man. Things haven't gotten better. Well, I mean, Just think about that. I, You know, it's so foreign and so disgusting to me personally. But I can't even comprehend that that would have ever happened, right? You know, we talk about people who are deniers of history, for example. Deny that the Holocaust or 9, 11 are all these things that ever happened. You wonder why? Because it's um It's just so shocking and just so wait. What? No. Come on, man. It was in a movie. Now that that actually really happened.
