George Brent ends up. Marrying Betty Davis taking the government navigation job. She hooked him up with and disappearing somewhere over the South American jungle Astor then discovers that she's pregnant with brand's baby. And assuming her husband is dead. Bette? Davis offers to pay Astor to have the baby and let Betty raise it as if it were hers. What makes the film completely unique and wonderful is that in the middle of the movie, the two women travelled together to a cabin in the middle of the desert. So then Astor's character can play out her pregnancy and have the baby in secrets the two women form a barbed bond with one another. That's unlike anything in movies of the Aira. What makes the great lie? Even more remarkable is that. Davis who was the bigger star hand picked Astor to play opposite her and the two actresses worked together to develop their scenes together to beef up Astor's part and thus make the relationship depicted, more substantial and unforgettable Astor deservedly won an Oscar for this performance. People have said that I stole the picture of him Bette Davis, but that is share nonsense Astor later wrote she handed it to me on a silver platter. This is a devastating thing to say about one's own mother, given that Astor's character in desert fury casino owner is openly corrupt totally controlling and pretty much incapable of showing genuine affection for her teenage daughter play. By Lisbeth, Scott until the quasi incestuous climax of the movie. For her part in her autobiography Astor, barely mentions desert fury, which she filmed while Mary Lynn was in high school. "In her last years. Clara was fascinated by Marilyn Monroe. When the younger actress died of an apparent suicide Clara commented that she could relate to Maryland struggles. She said sex bull is always a heavy load to carry, especially when one is very hurt, tired and below. There'd both Clara bow and Marilyn Monroe were sex. Symbols who suffered horrible abuse in their childhoods in both the camera was able to capture something unique and gorgeous in a hurt sick person. And in exchange, the hurt sick person was given fame and wealth. The kinds of spoils people dream of and assume will solve their problems. But as much as status and toys can be enjoyable to a points. They don't fix the original wound, which for both Clara and Marilyn came to overwhelm them. This is why it's so dangerous and destructive for a book like Hollywood, Babylon to incorrectly labeled Clara bow a gang banging party girl whose career went down in flames due to an uncontrollable sex life and an even more out of control voice. Not only were such things not true, but the real trauma and drama of Clara's life was both more damaging and narrative -ly fascinating. Then anything that could be made up. "The Hollywood Babylon version of Wally and Dorothy story never mentions the railroad accident or many of the other fascinating aspects of Reed's life and career. It mainly focuses on the idea that reads wife got rid of him and then capitalized on his death. What's interesting about this version of the story? It's not the inaccuracies so much as the knee jerk, sexism, Hollywood, Babylon, and the gossip. Lineage at anchors is supposed to be about speaking truth to power or revealing the subversive truth that the dominant culture doesn't want us to know. But what could be more in keeping with the dominant culture then shaming a self sufficient creative woman as professional widow, enshrining her. As the earth Yoko Ono or Courtney Love's again. And again, Hollywood. Babylon teaches us that women who show any sort of independence are not to be trusted in that sense. It's often much muster than the scandals at stretching up. Next week we will discuss how all of the scandals we've covered over the past few weeks led to the institutionalizing of censorship in Hollywood. Join us, then won't you. "The things that happened to Roscoe are buckle his loss of his studio contract. The dragging of his name in the press, his inability to return to his previous life of luxury in creative freedom after his acquittal is sort of a quivalent to the stuff that's happening now to the Harvey Weinstein's Louis c. k. is and other men who have been accused of variety of sex crimes with the crucial difference that are buckle actually had trials was acquitted and still was denied full redemption. Today we seem as a society to be unsure what the correct punishment is for men who have abused their power, but haven't or can't be tried for their alleged crimes. But we seem to have agreed that it's best for everyone. If they just go away in this climate, the arbuckle case becomes even more complicated in an era in which mainstream culture is suddenly oath. Open to talking about the fact that most women don't have an incentive to make up rape allegations, and instead have for decades been scared off from telling their stories and or have not been believed. It seems like it's the right time to interrogate the old narrative that fatty arbuckle was completely innocent and railroaded for a crime he didn't commit. The problem is this all happened almost one hundred years ago and there is no new evidence to examine you. Don't wanna let the present day lens skew your vision of the past to the point that you accuse an innocent man of a crime that he was tried three times four and ultimately acquitted that said, looking at this case for the first time in detail in over a decade. I'm less sure what happened in that hotel room. Then I've ever been on the one hand, there were many witnesses for the defense. Who testified to Virginia's history of bladder problems. The Kenneth anger implication that Virginia was raped with a bottle was a nod original. It had appeared I in a nineteen thirty one article in time magazine, and then again in a pulpy paperback about arbuckle published in nineteen sixty two and be not backed up by any physical evidence, but our buckle lied many times in the immediate aftermath of the party. And there were certainly no witnesses who shared his version of events in the hotel room plus most defenses of our buckle that would emerge in the decades after Virginia's death involved. Some kind of impugning her character such as angers contention that she spread crabs too many men around the Senate studio, which even if she did wouldn't have been reason to fumigate the lots Minta Durfee. He gave a lot of interviews in the sixties and seventies, and she doubled down on claims that Virginia was infected with v d defending her ex husband, supposed innocence by insisting that Virginia was a dirty girl who deserved to die. Durfee also spread rumors that mod Delmonte was a prostitute or a Madam rumors which have been accepted. As fact by even reputable riders. Despite there being no evidence of vendor Fay's gossip. As a parent as it is that Justice was perverted by an out of control media and by Hollywood's decision to scapegoat. One man in order to prevent the collapse of their business. It's equally apparent that no one really knows what happened to Fergie near rap, hey, other Virginia Rappe pay and her reputation was unfairly maligned. Both during our buckles trials and for decades after. But it's become difficult for me to buy simplistic version of the story. The contends that the dead woman and the female witnesses who testified against our buckle or telling lies in order to bring down a powerful man. Maybe there were nothing but victims in the arbuckle case. But the narrative that are buckle was the biggest victim depends on discrediting the woman who died before she could coherently tell her own story. Thanks for listening t- master member. Even if the newspaper reports implied her taste for sorted thrills in the wake of her death, her movies were released and drew big crowds as the first movie star to die. "Yes. In their private lives. The Gish sisters were devoted to one another and knocked lucky in love. Lillian Gish frequently suggested that her sister and mother with the most important relationships in her life. Heaven to me was a place where I could be with mother and Dorothy all the time went to typical quotes by the age of twenty, though she was known as the most beautiful blonde in the world. Lillian had not had any public romantic relationships. And if she had not, in fact been involved with Griffith romantically. It's possible. She had never to that point done anything like what today we would call dating there was not so much as a shred of gossip about her romantic life until Lillian was in her mid twenties when she was linked to Charles dual the mogul who had learned Lillian away from Griffith with promises of profit, sharing and creative inputs. Dual apparently frequently proposed to Lillian even though intil the last months of his relationship with miss Gish. He was married to a woman with whom Lilian was friend. Lillian initially put her full trust in do, but broke off their engagement before it came out that he was cheating financially. Lillian shortly thereafter began a relationship with George Jean Nathan, which would turn into a ten year attachments. Again, there were proposals and again, Lillian refuse to marry when asked about it. She would insist that she had chosen her career over what she called the business of marriage. Dorothy Gish was difference where Lillian was the great beauty destined to remain chaste and play tragedy. Griffith described Dorothy as hurt and saucy at the age of twenty two Dorothy would marry the actor. James Rennie who would come to live with Gish sisters and their mother. In the family apartments asked about the arrangements. Lillian said she was happy to have a man around the house. However, quote, it seems odd for Jim to come to breakfast in his Japanese KOMO. No, I didn't know. Men were such at least a morning. Eventually MRs Gish decided enough was enough and sent Dorothy belongings to her husband's apartments. Dorothy was devastated saying to her mother, if I thought you would put me out, I wouldn't have married. As tach to her mother and sister as she was Dorothy. Unlike Lillian was not chased non even as a pretense. She remained married to James Rennie for fifteen years though they did not live together nearly that long he drank and she had a fares most notably with actor Louis Cal Hearn Lillian didn't approve of the way Dorothy lived her life of her easy dalliances with men, especially. But the sisters remain the closest person, one another's life until Dorothy is death in nineteen sixty eight. All of this is to say that though there's no evidence to support gossip that the Gish sisters were lovers. You can see how their actual love lives provided the conditions for this gossip to take root, even if just as a joke about how the sisters were closer to each other than either ever managed to get to a single man. This closeness was virtually dramatized in Griffith's film orphans of the storm in which Dorothy and William play non biological sisters who share a bond that has demonstrated to be stronger than any romance. And at one point, the actresses and real life sisters are seen kissing one another on the mouth. Molly Haskell sites. This seen as an example of the oddly incestuous gays in all of Griffith's films.
