"Brave journey men and journey women in journey persons and journeys are really good band, even after Steve Perry. It's a bad crypto podcast. A show for the crypto curious and the crypto serious that is brave their lord Travis Wright and I am also brave sir lord Joel calm. And you are brave, fill in the blank. And Joe's just a city boy. Born and raised in new Chicago. Very nice. This is a fun episode, guys. I mean, a long time coming on this one. I don't know, Joe and I were having a conversation after we interviewed Brendan and we were like, um, who is comparable to this guy, right? This guy essentially was one of the guys who helped build the browser the way we know it, right? I mean, he invented JavaScript. He was really early in netscape, which netscape was an evolution of mosaic, which was the very first that I know of, right? And then went on to create Mozilla and Firefox, and then embrace this dude is an Internet legend. He's a pie near of web one, web two, and now web three, and we got him on that crypto. We're bringing them to you. And what's really interesting about it is you discover some of the mistakes he made along the way that was kind of oops, especially as it came to tracking people's behavior and how that turned into a really bad thing, but then he talks about what he's doing to fix it. I think you guys are really going to enjoy this here discussion with the one and only Brendan Ike.

Why Web Pioneer Legend Brendan Eich Founded Brave?

"Today, we have the CEO and cofounder of brave Brendan Ike is joining us right now. We're going to talk about all kinds of things. Brendan, welcome to the bad crypto podcast. Don't forget that. But most important micro unity. Yeah, he's got quite a background. You were the CTO, then CEO of Mozilla. And you helped launch the Firefox browser and you're also the inventor of JavaScript, which is the world's most popular programming language. So that little thing happened and then, of course, you founded the brave browser. So why found brave? Go ahead and tell us your reasons, especially after having launched a successful browser and Firefox that you thought we need brave. Right. So when we did Firefox, we were not as conscious about privacy as we are now. And we did this search deal with Google, which at the time was a great search engine and hadn't become a big Alphabet company full of all sorts of different businesses that all seemed to be lost leaders for the ad exchange business, which is the main revenue Lake of Google. We also in Firefox, we let the privacy conscious users build extensions for themselves and then grow those extensions. We call them add ons back in the day. So I sat for a long time thinking about two big problems. One is that browsers, if it gets successful, tend to be captured by a big tech company like a search company, which is really an ad exchange, like Google, or in the 90s, by an operating system company, which is really a word in excel office suite company. That was Microsoft.

"All right, there you go. There was Ken. From the wallet from secret key labs, just building cool stuff on stacks and on Bitcoin. Yeah, I enjoy that. Kim was cool. Nice guy, smart guy. Always good to have people from within stacks. On the show, shout out stack stats and all the stacks. Ecosystems, yeah. Also shout out anyone who has actually read the three body problem. As I say, man, so many people have recommended that now, like I say, this every time, but it's a very, very well known piece of sci-fi originally written by I don't know the name of the author, but in Mainland China. So obviously originally written in Chinese, and from, I guess, a Chinese perspective, but yeah, it's a sci-fi book about, yeah. I'm not even going to try and explain the flop because, you know, I've read a bit about it. But I haven't read the book. Got to read the book, folks. I'm going to read the book. All right, I think we come to the end of another show. I'm about to record a show with Brendan. Ike, Brenda and I say his name, I think so. The founder of the brave browser, so look for that coming up soon. Yeah. Maybe I published it before this one. I don't know. Anyway, thank you for listening to me. Don't forget to subscribe to the crypto conversation in whatever podcast app you are using. Give us a 5 star rating. Give us a nice review. Always appreciate it. Thank you. This was

"Years time? Yeah, I think the metaverse is actually, if it's really meta, it's it applies to things like social. So we shouldn't lose our game assets if we were running playing Fortnite in a future metaverse and we go through a portal into a classic game we love to play still. We should have NFTs for our game assets. We should have our cryptocurrencies in our wallet because those should be portable across worlds. And this applies to social networks that applies to websites. Nobody wants to have to use only this coin to buy at this ecommerce site, and that's okay to divide that ecommerce site. So I think factoring things into a user first platform, a super app a browser, super browser that has crypto and privacy features is critical. And I think that's going to happen and whether brave succeeds or we've become part of the we've become the trailblazer and others follow us. It's going to happen. Yeah. I love it. All right, the flip side of that, of course, is a famous quote by William Gibson, Brendan, who, of course, said that the future is already here. It's just not evenly distributed. With that in mind, can you think of an example of the future being here right now, but most people aren't aware of it. Yeah, I think if you look at some of the people I think unbanked, I don't know how they're doing in the crypto winter we're in, but some people are moving crypto natives. And they are trying to avoid the old world, and it's not always possible. It's not possible for me with a family, but I admire that, and that's certainly the future that's not even the distributed. The sovereign individuals I love it. All right, we're almost done here, Brendan, but time to zoom out time to get weird just for a second. What do you see as the long-term future for the human race? Do you see dystopia or utopia? Well, as a software person, I have to be neurotic about the details, but it optimists or I'd never get started. So I'm an optimist and I think there's a better world to come, but it's not entirely up to us. And the part that is up to us, we know what to do, but not everybody's doing it. I'm afraid people are being naughty. And that's something we all have to work at social need to set evil is not that group over there versus us. It's a line that cuts through every human heart. That's seriously. All right, the final question of Brendan, what is your favorite science fiction book film or TV show? Oh boy. You know, the film's so the recent dune was good. But if you look at what's the most fun to watch, I think James Cameron's aliens or Star Trek to the wrath of Kong. And of course, the original Star Wars trilogy at special places because I was young. If you look at books, I still think very highly of doing which I read as a teenager. It's kind of 14 injuries, I think. And I want the old Niven and porn that way steps too. I'm the hard SF nerd. Fantastic. I love it. Okay, final bonus question for you, Brendan. You can answer this if you want or not. What happened to Google's search results? Why have they fallen off a cliff? Why is Google search just not what it used to be? It's no good now. Yeah, that's what happens to monopolies. Remember, Microsoft became monopoly and Internet Explorer in Windows became terrible. Google has crossed everything across all the streams. Like you shouldn't be doing Ghostbusters. They've made an ad exchange target together. And on my iPhone, when I use Google search, Google's ads push all the organic results down below the bottom of the phone. It's green. So Google is its own worst enemy here. And that's how monopolies in. May take a century. Maybe that'll happen to Apple next. Fantastic talking to you today, Brendan, thank you so much for coming on the show. Nothing else to say except. Well, could you please tell people where they can find you on Twitter because you're obviously a mess of Twitter nerd, which we love to see. And of course, again, just make the case for people out there have not tried brave, and I don't know why they wouldn't. Or tell people why they should and how they should do so. Right, I'm Brendan Ike, I'll run together EIC on Twitter. Also, brave is just at brave, so you can find me if you look at brave, you'll see me along the falls and you'll see me retweet it by our account there. You should use braid because we put the user first in every way and we prove it by paying you at least what you make from optional private ads and we have other options coming for sharing value with users helping them create more value over time and get their fair share of it. I love it. Thank you so much, Brandon. All the best in life for now. Thank you. All right, there you go, team. That was Brendan eich, Brendan, from brave. That was a fun one. Man, yeah, Brendan, very smart guy, really gets into the nuts and bolts of how things work. Absolutely fascinating, really enjoyed that. Yeah, well, if you saw listening here at the end of the show, thank you for listening. I do hope you enjoyed that. Yeah, have you tried brave? I mean, I imagine you probably have I use brave. I mean, I don't use bravers, my only browser, I use a few different browsers for different purposes, different platforms. I guess most people do that, but of course, yeah, I mean, brave, great browser. It's fast. It's slick. It does block those ads, and you can earn, yeah, little amounts, but you can earn bet for using brave, really, which is cool. I do like a Brendan's vision of web three and fascinating that he sees brave as a potential starting point for everything at which does actually make sense to me. So look, we'll see, can he continue? Can he start the conversation with Elon Musk? Who knows? Speaking of Elon, what happens to Twitter? I mean, man. It's going to be fun. Going to be fun to see. All right, a bit of leave it there. Thank you for listening. Don't forget to subscribe to the crypto conversation in whatever podcast app you are using. And yeah, give us a 5 star rating. Give us a nice review. All that good stuff. Thank you. This was the crypto conversation for brave new

"Their lovely hardware. They sure do. All right, well, conscious of time, Brendan, let's just finish off this part of the podcast. What are you working on right now? What's coming next? I know you've got some presentations at a web summit coming up. Anything you can tease coming down the product pipeline. What's next? So brave is not just a browser. We're a super app we're building in other features. Maybe they'll be messenger. I have ideas for social that I've talked about on Twitter, so I can briefly sketch them. If you think about brave browser based with blockchains and cryptographic protocols approach, we don't need to make our own Twitter and people sometimes use Twitter or they use masks on are these both. What if you could in the browser sort of keep track of people across those networks and you could save your own posts because they're very small. They're small villain the pictures I take and the videos I take. And I do attach images to them, but those can be saved too. Then you'd own your own data and you could never be suspended and lose your Twitter stream. It would be back up. You could also track your Friends across different sites. You could switch if you didn't like Twitter for any reason. It doesn't mean they have to suspend you because they'll leave you alone if you stay quiet generally. But that's not always true. It's increasingly not true. But if you just don't like the way they're acting or the way they were acting before Elon bought them, you can switch to a different network and your friends could continue to track you through your address book. Your contacts app on iPhone, you would just have extra data in there linking their different social identifiers. And you would never lose track, you would have your own posts backed up so you could replay them in a new network if you wanted to start over instead of starting cold, which is always daunting. This is kind of social front end, browser based aggregator. It's actually disaggregated and re aggregator is something I'd like to build. I haven't done it, but I've been talking about it so much. I better go do it. We're also a search engine. Brave bob braves search and brave search is getting good. It's getting up toward 6 billion queries a year if you annualized from our 20 million a day. Today, it's getting to the point where a lot of users are finding that they don't need to use Google. And that's tall order. But brave search also uses a user first client first approach. We don't have to crawl the whole web. We let our users searches and the results that they prefer guide us. And those users who want to can enable something called the web discovery project in the search settings and brave to contribute anonymized extra data to help us improve the search engine. And that means we can grow and compete without having to be as good as Google before we get any users. And I'm working on something for brave search. I can't talk about, but I want to decentralize things about search. And this is hard. I mentioned earlier on Larry Page said it's a sort of a sharing system with some compromise on privacy because you all send your queries up to Google and Google that gives the best answers. And just deciding what the best is is an approximate and continuously updated process. And there's no absolute objective best. So that's so far means search algorithms are centralized. And I'm not here to say we can decentralize them. And you may know of the pre search project. They don't decentralize. They simply use a bunch of APIs like Google's APIs, things. I think they mostly use Google from their nodes on their blockchain to answer queries, and they have a staking model for keywords for revenue. Grave search isn't going to use Google except as a fallback like we use Bing. And you can read about how we do that on our site. And it's very light. It's like less than 8% of queries go to the Bing fallback. And users have to turn on the Google fallback, which is done in the browser, another win of having a browser is you can make the browser do the work and preserve privacy and mash up some Google results that you anonymously query Google over. If you think brave's not going to have the best answers and that's always true for a very rare keywords. But there are aspects of search that can be decentralized rather quickly and I'm working on that. So I hope that is a good teaser because I can't see more. I love it. All right, thank you, Brendan. Let's go to a very quick break, and then we'll come back, we'll have some fun, we'll finish off we'll run them through the very famous crypto conversation, hot take ground. For crypto indices and benchmarking, brave new coins powerful indexing engine can calculate high frequency intraday and end of day indices for a wide range of index products. Brave new coins custom indices team delivers experienced consultancy, premium data, and trusted calculation. Contact B and C today to find out more. And we are back and I'm with Brendan Ike course the CEO of brave software and the brave browser brynden, fantastic talking to you today. I like to finish each podcast with a very quick round of rapid fire crypto conversation hot takes. Are you up for it? I think so. Just gonna run some questions at you, Brendan, you're a talker. So I just want you to answer them as quickly as you can. Hot tech style question one is where would you say that you sit on the Bitcoin maximalist to multi chain opportunist spectrum? I'm a pride with this. I'm in the middle, I think Bitcoin has great advantages. First of all, by satoshi's white paper coming out so early and by being digital gold or, you know, I think focusing on store value and by having the 21 million cap and having some brilliant innovations over time, not just at the beginning. I have to give Bitcoin a lot of respect, but I don't I'm not an exclusive extra maximalist. I think there's more to say and do and research on blockchains and Bitcoin is not the last word, like something God wrote on tablets for all time. So I'm a pragmatist. I will use what works and Bitcoin works well for some things and we use other chains for other things. I love it. All right, well, Brendan Bill Gates famously said that we tend to overestimate what we can accomplish in two years and underestimate what we can accomplish in ten you'll be familiar with this is as a developer yourself. But with that in mind, let's whatever you like, you know, web three metaverse brave look, what does it all start the super app? What does it all look like

"Back ads. When someone had an ad blocker switched on. So ads that didn't really track you, but that allowed the publisher to make some money. When someone was blocking ads. From there I moved to a company called brave, which is a privacy web browser. That blocks tracking based ads. It sounds totally counterintuitive to move from an anti ad block company to an ad block company. But the reason that was a fairly easy and fluid movement was that we had always been saying the same things as our colleagues at brave, that there was a problem in advertising that the in Europe we call them humans and people in America you call them consumers that the consumers were right to be unhappy and had a very good reason to block the ads. And the coalition for better advertising that nonsense that was as far as I can see a creature of Google and never examined YouTube pre roll ads. In its research, it came up with no solutions to this problem of consumer or user vexation. So we were a philosophically on the same side as brave. Our conclusions were, those are problem with ads, and there needs to be revenue for worthy publishers. And the approaches in both cases were quite different, but roughly it was the same thing. So when I joined brave, I was working for a guy there called Brendan Ike, very interesting man. He invented JavaScript and was a cofounder of the browser Firefox. And at that point, joining brave, I started to try to equip European enforcers with information about the industry. So that they would take action. And unfortunately, the European enforcers did not take action. And that went on for quite some time. And worked a little bit in the U.S. as well on legislative initiatives. There has been there has been some action. So it took a while just before we got to anything or do you still feel like they sort of have made no enforcement ground? You know, we are, I can't remember the last count, but I think it's about a 1400 days, roughly. Since I filed a complaint and evidence to the Irish data protection commission about Google's authorized buyers as it's now known. That's Google's real-time bidding industry. Sorry, real-time bidding unit..
