"Is Bloomberg. This is Bloomberg business week with Carol Massar and Jason Kelly from Bloomberg radio suggested this week. We're talking about a well known brand in the luxury watch industry and one that's been in family hands for more than a century winding down that era as it. Looks ahead to the next one hundred years winding down. I see what you did there. There's also private equity angle to this. So I love it Benedict camel joins us from Berlin. With all things. Bright Ling soap Benny bring us up to speed. This is a brand we've seen these watches on fabulous risks all over the world. But a little bit of turbulence, but some new leadership. It sounds like. Yes, that's right. So Breitling is one of those better known watch brands that's been in family hands for about one hundred years. And then last year something happened that doesn't happen. Very often in the watch industry at got sold to private equity. The Swiss watch industry sort of principally grouped around the big companies like swatch like riche mom's like LVMH learns a couple of private ones like Rolex like protect Philippe, and was really one of the last sort of independent crown jewels. The family owned them they didn't quite know what to do. With would they invest more money to let it grow? Would. They look for a new investor to do that for them. And then they. Then they chose the latter possession on the fact that went to private equity was apprising because private equity in the watch industry seem sort of polar opposites on the one hand. And you know, this Jason having covered this industry. Very well is private equity guys with a calculator. The guys who will say Kay. Let's see no. With fripperies with extravagant says, let's look for an exit and the not-too-distant future on the watch industry on the other hand is all about long levies, all about handing down generation to generation family control, and all that kind of stuff so two very different kinds of approaches to a product, and we're curious to see how it pans out. Well, which is so interesting because you think about you mentioned riche Mont, right? A luxury brand powerhouse and the new head of Breitling left riche Mont to come to this. I'm curious why he would have done that. Because that also sent shockwaves kind of through the watch industry. Absolutely. So Jorge Cham, or George he has French ancestry. So his. He wasn't. He was there for seventeen years and sort of rose through the rise. And everybody thought that the top job the senior job of all of Richemont is sort of within his grasp then a year after CVC bought the Brown brightly. They started talking to George cans started asking him. Look, what do you make of us Brian? What would you do? Where would you take it? What does it need? What does it lack? And then one thing led to the other have you know, what what did I just do it myself? And I won big reason for him to make that transition was that he owns equity and brightening owns about five percent of the company and for him the way he told us in an interview was thousand great incentive for him because he can sort of be entrepreneurial about it. He can watch this company grow. Ideally under his Skillet. Ship not to him after seventeen years at Richmond seemed like a nice new start to take in his fifties now. So that seemed like the right move better. You have to say when I started reading this story, all I could think of was the old Breitling avenue went back on Google and kind of pulled up salmon, it was like women and kinda tight close dental and clad guys really much like driving planes and all that kind of things are flying planes. Change, you're laughing. But that's what it was the kind of change their image. Don't they are? They are changing their image. Yeah. So that's one of the first things that can noticed pricing. And as you say, it's a well known brand. But it's kind of well known at this point for all the wrong reasons. Brian that's known for big chunky fairly busy watchers kind of watch. That has favored by what you might. Call sort of the top guy topgun guy, you know, somebody who sort of socialized and the eight hundred ninety somebody you might not be immune to the allures of objective. Objectified. Women. And that is not the time we live in anymore and people look at these adverts and a look at the kind of image that presented and unthanked. That's not really the kind of product I want to get behind and can notice that. And and quickly realized this is something we need to do. You can see it and the kind of people he's recruited for their advertising campaigns, the sexist as the out they've gone. He's brought on a fresh crop of people Brad Pitt as one of them. He's a Brandon Basseterre Shah's Shelley's therapy. There's another one and Adam driver for sort of the younger generation of people that sort of what they call the cinema squad. Brandon Bassedas and trying to be sort of younger outdoorsy digital not sort of your dad's watch kind of company anymore. And so what's the biggest concern that he has or you know, you take away from investors are observers in this market about. Out the the potential for this to succeed. I mean, it looks pretty good right now if you look at the the the watch of they've come out with the new sort of storytelling as he tells it the brand proposition. It looks a lot more coherent. A young it looks fresher the pressure really isn't sort of unbridled.

"And it was only after doing that for a couple of years that I got a call, a friend of mine who said, hey, I'm here in Iraq. I am. I'm looking for what they're looking for guys. Are you interested in coming over. At that point, I was like, look, I, I don't know what else to do, but this is where my skill set lies, and this is where I can make some money. And so I made the decision to fly halfway around the world into a war zone. To Mozell Iraq the most dangerous place in the Middle East of the time. So that I could earn enough money to hopefully create some kind of future for myself. It turns out that I got to go to Mosul. This is fun little fact, Kyle. I got to go to Mosul because the day before I arrived in country, four guys had just been blown up by vehicle ide- and they were dead and they needed replacement bodies of which I was one. Humane walk into that one. Yeah. The day two days after for your best friends, just got blown up by now. You got dropped in a bunch of new guys, and I was one of them. I did that for five years, but I realized while I was doing that, see, I'm was now a making them big them, big stacks, Kyle because it just dummying money just basically fell out of the sky into my lap. I didn't really have to do anything for it. I just got lucky. And with all this money Pilin into my lap, which really wasn't as much as you think it was app by the time we got done. I think it was getting somewhere around fifteen thousand a month or something. What they were paying me to, you know, to be a bullet sponge out there it by fifteen thousand a month, but you can't work twelve months out of the year. You end up working about six or seven, and then you go home for a month or two, and then you go back on contract. So you know you end up working about eight ten months out of the year. She could do the math on that of which eighty ninety thousand bucks a year wasn't like I was making a million dollars a year down ranger anything it was, but it was more money than I had that I had made I had ever made in the past. And so I'm sitting on this money and make a little bit more and I could have been doing what everybody else was doing Kyle. I could've been by Breitling watches and fancy cars and big houses and stuff like that. But I decided that what I ought to do is I ought to invest in myself and I start learning some other skill because I said one or two things is going to happen on either get well few things. Old and an injured. I'm going to get dead or the contracts going to dry up, and I'm gonna have no place to go and no other skills. So I sat down and asked myself very simple question. His question I suggest every single human being asked themselves question is this if I could do anything I wanted in the entire world, but I had to do it every day. What would I do. And I posted over that some people's wow will do nothing. Well year loser. I can't help you. But most people who have any sort of driving ambition, they have something that they really enjoy and maybe it's, you know, underwater basket. Weaving is when I use constantly as an example, or maybe it's woodworking or whatever. Whatever that thing is, you need to figure out what that is. I whatever you need, you need it more than you need air. That's the thing that you're looking for and what I came up with. Listen, I don't know what I wanna do. I wanna work in the financial industry like I don't know what I wanna do, but I know I wanna work in finance somehow. Now keep in mind. I'm a guy who barely graduated from high school.

Republican if the Republicans all show up and all of these, districts they could potentially hold onto him the president's gonna have to get out there on the campaign trail and hit it hard to get them fired up though because Democrats are fired up just by his mere, presence the White House, you you may be. Right they they may be able to hold onto. It it'll be very. "A dan back as as the breitling watch is now they're so did a nice one while getting one of those christmas if you're good boy it's six twenty four the president promises to get down the florida as soon as he can certainly wants to see what happened the mara logam a more importantly what's going on with the people in florida a group that really deserves tremendous credit the united states goes good what they've done i mean they were they're going right into that and you never know you know when you go in the you don't know if you're gonna come out they are they are really ah if you talk about branding nobrand has improved more the united states goes good end fema the entire group favours been they've got a post all right the latest statistics now as i was driving and it was just over four million without power now it's five point seven so if the sun comes up there and they get a better assessment almost six million people without power that's that's a lot of people this could go on for weeks by the time they get at that power up i'm looking at some of the live coverage lot of flooding lock look streak while local street flooding palm trees down the whole thing i'd be based basically played on the television show yesterday i was watching cnn for most of the dan we watching it yeah i mean some of it is nonsense so abyss redundant you've got guys geist was the guy on the corner at blowing you almost blown down he tried to an interview with a general sitting somewhere else uh it's it's some of it is above at this silly but some of its important and the media is an easy target so what that's expected to our more from the president hope there aren't too many people in the bed you don't want to be in that path that's a path you don't wanna be in a we tried to warn everybody and for the most part they have left but that's a bad path dan listen i think i i think the media that its job told you to get out one point we all thought it was going.

"Something you could get on your telephone or your tablet without having to pay for sale cellular data charges without having you can watch it on your levin tv without having to pay a cable or satellite provider so they're kind of working a lot yeah expanding acquiring breitling regulatory hurdles and then also reinventing sort of the way they're broadcasting some of the stuff so tell us who is behind it so the real the person behind the company is david smith who is the executive chairman his three brothers dunkin' frederick and robert are also involved call two varying extend the company as well they took over the station in the business from their father who started essentially with one independent station in baltimore in the 1970s and when david took over in the 80s jumped on board with family it was just a tiny little regional company in three independent stations and within a decade he grenade into sixty stations and it's always been his vision his driving ambition to turn this company really into a big national player that could compete with the likes of comcast at t time warner google all these different companies that are now jockeying basically four the future of television now with that ambition and drive has also in his own sorta priscilla has gone in the way of himself sometimes be is not necessarily had the the clean is backdrop here in terms of fines and all this violations and stuff like that yeah i think one of the intentions about this company is there at this pivotal moment where they're trying to really make this leap in terms of the competitive set that they're going up against and yet for the whole history of the company when you look back and utah you look at what david smith is done you look at how the stations have operated it's an incredibly frugal operation i mean every one that's ever work there has these stories about you know the degree to which they tried to cut costs the degree to which they try and manoj costs on the program inside and that kind of makes sense when you think about the fact that originally they really justin distribution over the air distribution in the early years they didn't even have news or it was it a lot of their tv stations and that really changed in the 2000s and as they acquire bigger stations it already had news there it was operating.
