"Author of a bunch of books including the accidental creative die. Empty louder than words hurting tigers and the new book. The motivation co. So you've probably heard the old phrase you can't change people and i think that many of us want to believe that it's true especially given how entrenched so many of us have become in our beliefs and our behaviors over the past in full of years. It seems like there are some people who just simply cannot. It will not be changed. And you've probably had that manager or that team member who for one reason or another was just so maddening to you and you just couldn't get along and if you could change them you would be just resigned yourself to the fact that they just can't be changed while today's guest would beg to differ with you in fact he says that you can change people. And that's the title of his brand new book. It's peter bregman. He's been on the show before talked about some of his other books Which by the way have been some of my favorite books actually and on this show. He's gonna talk about how you can in fact change people and why it's important that we try so without further ado here. Is peter brakeman will. "People have forgotten. Show there you go a little sense of humor. And it paid off with a couple. Hits alex bregman. Good to have him back in tucker's helmet breath when he's running a little bit as you should. You could see when he's when he's running. He's he's i the i feel like he's favorite. He's being cautious. Probably the best way to put. Let me tell you something. If i can have him at eighty five percent without being back hurt. I'm not going to have him. I'll deal with it. Yeah you can't deal with it because some of the really good ones can survive still contribute big time if they're not at their best because if you're one of the better players in the league in you're playing at your best at one hundred percent healthy and all good will then you're always an mvp candidate but those guys just kind of fight through and if you can stay on the field and alex bregman at eighty five percents going to be better than two thirds of the league or more and just as presence matters absolutely is a game changer with one swing of the bat and even though you may not be able to move like he wants to third base just yet he still gobbled it up again i. I doubt that he's gonna move exactly how he wants to move this season. It's just going to be an offseason. Get your body right. Gotta have your compass and find a way to get through it. yeah without making. You know you don't wanna make excuses but to get through it and survive it sometimes. It's the the survival part right and listen if you're this team and there's a ball that's questionable that you can get to know he'll make the effort of course he's got out of the guys that can make and if one of them seeps through on a single in the second inning now on the tenth inning you gotta stop him and choke farrand. Of course. I got testimonies. Very i play yesterday. Great dive stabbed. Knock it down. Make the play. I but yeah he's going to make the effort dusty was right to you. Talked about Pentecostal talker back. I think we forget our we. Don't give talker. Maybe the credit that he deserves for what season that he's had he's been after that rough first month the best hitter on the team. All your love. There is consistent as they gave homerun twenty two. I think at who's leading out today out to banda your don both with twenty twenty five twenty five. Yeah i'm still holding out. Hope that tucker goes on our. You're on at twenty six. He has the league homered again. Yes that's right. i'm. I'm hoping that kyle tucker goes on. Hr benton the last thirty four games. He gets himself with thirty six elite so bold prediction the begins. You pull up his splits. Go look again. The numbers that he's put up the sea. Imagine if he started fast yes. He started in april one. Eighty one was a batting effort but hit five home runs and in may went to ninety six six home runs three thirty eight in june only hit two home runs. That must began three thirty eight to ninety one in july and then so far. August two eighty six even the most consistent player after that first month on the team like think about it too. There has been a roller coaster. For now. it's been. The roller coaster was getting on the field and then at the beginning. Yeah getting through just a slump but you know what the one thing about him. The personality and the approach never changes right right. And that's that's a hard thing to do to a lot of guys when you're going through the struggle emotion runs wild and i can remember. I think it was james. Click talked too early in the season. He's thirty so listen. You wouldn't be able to note with him. He's probably skied. Grown keeps doing his thing. And when you're that good eventually you can't help but hit. Yeah true always known as a guy who could write. You're hitting him seventh in your order. Which in most teams that are not the three or four best the guys in your three four or five hole in most teams in this hell hell. Yeah because i mean even in a to. I mean you think you can make the case that this season he has been there been there best enter yup not a lot of lulls in his game other the beginning of the season few steve many slumps and when i say mini slump shifts like ham. I know for ten. Oh that's that's two and a half games okay. But he's been fantastic and what a luxury to have. Hey you're number two hitter in in some other city it happens to be the number six seven six or seven hole depending on the situation. Who's in the lineup. All season long. I don't know as a guy i mean i imagine. He's hit in the lower part when there was injuries but for the most part he hit after number five most of the year right. I believe softening the injuries. I would imagine he's hit in down in the lower half in line of a couple of times but the majority of it is now you find me in this league right now. A better number seven hitter he hit and every spot in the order season pitching. He's had ten games in the five whole fifty one games six hole in twenty seven games at the seven although isn't as majority he's had just ate at the clean bob but everything else has been to one one two in the six seven. He's got like seventy to eighty seven whole hit or this year. He's hitting to ninety six old hitter hidden to eighty four zero five whole hitter. He said two fifty six so he just made what a luxury. Yeah what a luxury to have astros wise. Hey we're at the bottom of the order at six or seven depending on the order. How's your guy pretty good decent. Yeah maybe our best hitter. Yeah right now so good to have him back good to have bregman back and And excited to go and this. It's time now. We're inside of thirty five games and thirty five games. Exactly roy left the james click thirty sixty. I think it's thirty five after today. Thirty five thirty four after Times game often. Today's friday today's throwback thursday so often eight three with With the rangers and then what seattle seattle next week right chance to put them to bed bed replying better playing better. No i know they are speaking of your bed if you happen to watch. The dodgers padre game. You didn't get much sleep. It just ended. Yeah probably an hour and a half ago when waking up not yet so close. I walked in like five fifteen in tyler. Said it ended like what two hours before it ended about. I think our time about three in the morning at three thirty. I woke up in today's world showering in the clubhouse. Have this stupid extra inning rule with the guy on second base. They'd played sixteen innings last night. "So you're sitting there. Maybe got the word document or google. Docs open on your screen and net. That cursor is just laughing as you as it blinks and you're trying to come up with the next new idea or maybe your first new idea when it comes to your entrepreneurial journey. I don't know maybe you're trying to write a book. Maybe you're working in cubicle america. And you've got to come up with some idea for them and you sit down and you start writing and you start writing you down. This idea drought down that i but you're not sure which ones are the best. How do you test the ideas you have. How do you recognize which one of those many ideas that you to down is a fantastic. I what is the quickest way to find out what you can ask yourself Do your ideas have any of the traits that we're gonna be talking about today and we're going to focus on five of them specifically in the first one is. Does your idea fill a specific niche right out of all the kinds of needs. That are out there. Does your idea the one you're looking at right now. That one the wonder thinking of right this very minute. Does it fulfill a need in any of those nature. Now this can be a bit of a challenging question right. You might have something. That's wildly unique. You're thinking men. Nobody is ever thought about this. But if it's not really any good use than who cares right. Hey don't get me wrong. I love the pet. Rock was cool but was kind of useless right. What a great idea. And i'm sure the guy made millions of dollars off of it but short term short-lived is your idea gonna fill a specific niche in if it does. Let's continue on if it doesn't let's move on to your next idea and the next one you ask yourself is is the idea workable. Sometimes after the brainstorming you come up with what you think is great idea but when you start digging underneath the surface yet kind of start finding out. There's no way you can bring it into reality. Maybe the tools aren't there. Maybe the tech. Isn't there yet right. I'm having a great idea for disc- killer interactive video twenty years ago. Great technology was there for the average consumer yet. So i guess maybe you're you if you ask yourself this idea feel like it belongs in Some science fiction movie or an alternate reality. Then you might wanna sit that idea aside any idea that you come up with it. doesn't quite meet the criteria today. Don't discard

"Manufacturing in new england i think helped contributes to some of the demise. We're seeing in bowling right now. No i've been a few times to there's a a bowling alley called kings. They've got a couple of locations and it's really more of an entertainment center and you know they serve alcohol and the this there's lights and computers and you don't have to keep score and all well and good but it doesn't for me have the same magic because i'm throwing these big monster fred flintstone boulders and knocking down eight or nine pins and that's not good enough do you go bowling much tenpin To be perfectly honest. I think i've role tenpin since i was a kid and i don l. my first string until i was about fifty five. So i mean. It's it's weird when you grow so you grew up in new york new york. I came here after college. Did you have any inkling that there was such a thing can open bowling when you were a kid. No idea and my brother who still lives in new york had no idea when i told him i was writing this book. He had never heard of cattle bowling. That's so it it's a regional thing and it's An active game in massachusetts new hampshire and maine and also in nova scotia at new brunswick. So that's the international element and you have to wonder Maybe you know the answer to this. Why worked its way up there how it worked. Its way up there and why it didn't catch on elsewhere or any thoughts on that in a there. There's i can see how it caught on a new england because it started in worcester just kind of spread so that that makes sense to me and it didn't seem to work. Its way up the eastern seaboard in terms of why it hasn't spread. There's different theories but a lot of them just are based on the availability of the equipment. the bowmore companies out of business There's only one company. That's manufacturing candle. Pin pin setters right now..

"Then they started What would happen is they would start wobbling so the owners of the allies with sand off the bottom to make them sit straight again and then after a while you're playing with pinson. Different sizes wasn't wasn't great but over time. They experimented the manufacturers experimented with different kinds of plastic coating. But it wasn't until i forget what year but It was still fairly recently. That accompanying in maine in garland manufacturing in saco maine Soko sake soko adult answer to anything. It's okay exactly They they came up. With a resin and a patented way of creating the candle pin the cattle pins and now instead of lasting just a few months now they left for years they might be in my personal history the most hated inanimate objects on the planet when they don't fall the way they're supposed to see what love about candle pin bowling for those who've never done it you can throw a perfect ball right down the middle and think this is it. I've got a strike or at least nine pins and you just punch out the two middle pins and they're all kinds area. It is but it's also a game of skill and it's a game of tact and and and strategy and i mentioned the fellow his name i think is some the sem be. I think his name is yes. Ralph ralph sam and he scored a to forty five of which is amazing because in kendall pins you're not likely to get a strike every time he got seven in a row and three spares. Wow that's amazing and Only one person tied the record. Since but basically that to forty five stands as the highest recorded sanctioned candle pin score in the game. When i broke one hundred and one string. I was excited. You know that was a big moment when i got three figures. there's so many aspects to this We'll we'll get into. But i got a jump ahead a little bit. And there's a picture of a rather well known athlete named babe ruth holding a couple of Candle pin bowling. Ball's looking like he's about to get up to lane because he's wearing the shoes and speculation is he would have done this. Because he lived in what sudbury lived in the area. "I will explain what candle pins are for the people listening all over the world of no idea what we might be talking about before we get there. There aren't too many left. That's the sad part. I mean it's a. It's a sport that was very popular for decades and decades. And all told how many of these exists today. When i started writing this book i had a list about him of about one hundred. Active candle pin places in new england. sadly some of those closed because of the pandemic and i'd say maybe a few dozen of those may be fortyish are members of the international candle pin bowling association. Okay the fact. The fact that there's an international association is His heartening i'll tell you that there's candida candida. God bless canada and may you forever reign supreme in the canopy lanes so candle pin bowling. Let's explain what it it actually looks like a candle pin hence the name but what is it and as opposed to ten pin or duckpin. Well it is a bowling game so it's the same premise. You throw a ball at a bunch of pins. The difference is the size of the balls and the shape of the pins so candle pins are taller than Ten pins there about fifteen almost sixteen inches tall and skinny. They're they're taper it a little bit at each end but they're essentially cylindrical so they're tall and skinny. The ball are way smaller than ten pinballs. The balls about the size of a grapefruit. I would say they weigh about two and a half pounds and they fit in your hand. They don't have finger holes and the other thing the two other things about candle pin that make different from the kind of bullying. The most people are familiar with is that you have three turns per frame instead of two and when you knocked down a pin it's not cleared so you can use the peons that have fallen down the would to try to knock over the pinson. Still standing absolutely ended all got started in the city of worcester. You right absolutely candle. Pin bowling was invented in the city of worcester in the late eighteen. Hundreds the in the details of this origin stories vary a little bit but the gist of it is. There was a guy named justin white who owned a billiards hall and bowling place in in downtown worcester on pearl street and he wanted to find more challenging game for his customers the regular bowling so he experimented the story goes he found some broomsticks in his closet and he tried setting them up. And you don't know it could knock those down because they were too skinny but eventually he hit on a version of the game that used What are what we know. Today is candle pins. They were smaller than the candle pins. We know today but It was version of the game. We know today. And then a guy named john muncie. Jack muncie entered the picture a few years later and the two of them. Perfect the game publicized. Game promoted the game and Jack muncie went on to be one of the founders of the national cattleman duckpin congress which established the rules for the game in about nineteen o six right and it is a much more challenging game than traditional ten pins because i mean you can get a strike strike and a strike in. It's very difficult. Although someone's done it once. I think Gotten mostly strikes in a couple of spares to get an amazing score your but What's interesting is the original pens. Were were rather fragile. Key bidding them with the ball the element of plastic. or whatever. you wanna call it coating. These pens must have made a big difference. Yes so the original pins are made wood and of course they splintered over time because they kept getting hit and they kept flying around.

"Khun get that at a slot to play the Lakers in the first round of the playoffs, but There's no real thought of New Orleans really doing anything as far as being near the top this year. So how do you think Zion will be played in these eight games? Trying to get to the playoffs? And how do you think he should be played? Yeah, My guess is they have taken the long view this entire time because I think they know the kind of talent they have in Zion Williamson and so And I don't think this is necessarily limited to just the pelicans. You know what happens if you get out of the gate slowly across the board on any number of teams. You know that psychiatry in order in our ski, you know, reported, you know a few weeks ago that basically some of these chains Would look at this in the long view and say, Listen, we're not going to put our players at risk in any way. Um, so it's that will be fascinating to me is if some of these teams like a New Orleans gets out of the gate slowly What happens to the minutes and the productivity of their respective stars versus a team like the Phoenix Suns, who, Monty Williams said other than the teams competing for a championship. No one has more at stake here than us. You know where a young team on the rise and you can see it? I have, um, you know, we sort of did a dry run with the Phoenix Suns, and they played it. You know, like this was a regular season game because they're trying to maximize the 11 games they have here philosophically. I think you'll see approaches across the board from these organizations. And it all begins tonight and we'll see what happens when it all starts. Doris, don't let me go. I'm saying I'm going to miss the three of you. It has been my privilege to be on the show. With all of you. I have admired your work. I admire more your character's men. So I just thank you for letting me be a part of your show over the last couple years, Guys, it's meant the world to me. And this is from a woman who I once called Boris Dirk. Yes, you did. You know that love is real way. Appreciate you helping this show sound way smarter than it really is for all those years thinking, Thank you. Thanks TV. Be well, guys. You get to keep talking to her. You and shit and God willing, man like listen Satin on August 17th August and thankfully, I have today they're so doors will actually want to talk to And I love the part about the teams that are really going to be in it. We have made the comparison to that Midland College team that makes that bowl game. Everybody's like, Oh, my God, You're six and six. Why you going to a ball game? The Golden Bowl game for the 15 practices you get before the war game. That's what coaches want. They can practice their young guys. They get more work out of their players, and that's what these lesser teams that don't have A really shot at anything are going to do in playing minutes of their younger players Think about teams were so concerned about getting those kind of minutes to develop players that they almost did the delete eight bubble in Chicago. They just die on the vine decided we're not going. What What was that going to be? You know what it was going to be A but It was the night I well, it was, but I do understand from a coach's respect of getting those guys on the court and playing. But yes, that's probably better off just kind of withering away. So about that. We're going to pass out and apparently in baseball. Major League Baseball has passed on any retribution for the use of nationals in any way, shape or form because if you didn't hear Joe Kelly, the reliever for the Dodgers has been suspended eight games. Eight games, which is the equivalent of 22 games in a regular 162 game season. For more than on more than one occasion, a couple of nights go throwing at or around or behind the heads of several Astro players Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa, most notably, which led to a little kerfuffle, which had everybody running out in the field, where there was no social distancing, which is big part of problem because the Miami Marlins still dealing with that massive covert outbreak. But at the end of the day what it means is that the Dodgers are really getting hammered here for something that most people in baseball clear the umpires in the game, by the way, who were sort of letting Joe Kelly do this a couple of times without really saying, Hey, stop that warning. There was no order warning to Joe Kelly at all. There was one warning assessing this game, and it was to the Astros not to Joe Kelly or the Dodgers. And so Buster only are fine Baseball insider basically, said the Dodgers They are perturbed about this. Within the Dodgers organization. There's absolute outrage and shock over this decision because in eight games suspension in a 60 game season is the equivalent of a 21 game suspension within the Dodgers organization. There's a feeling of look he didn't hit Bregman. He actually in their eyes didn't even come close to hitting him, and they felt like Dusty Baker was screaming at Kelly. In that inning from the Houston dugout. They were absolutely surprised by the length of the suspension, especially because Kelly is a reliever. Well, Dusty Baker got fine from the Astros. Dave Roberts, the manager for the Dodgers got suspended one game, which I believe you served last night and then the eight games for Kelly, which he's appealing, and I do believe a lot of people think that maybe have maybe four games, maybe 345 games in that area. There now we all believe he got suspended for he has a little bit of a track record in this, so it's not like it's the first time and also it led to something they don't want his close proximity outside of the game, and that's bench clearing. We say, you know, it's a bunch going brawl. It wasn't but people were not social distancing. It didn't get too crazy, but they got too close, which everybody and Mike We know this. This was going to happen that the optics were going to be nothing have to happen to the players, and we know baseball's reason why, because they needed the players to tell the story about the sign stealing, so they got immunity for this, But nothing happened to them, and Rob Manford came out hard in the off season and said. If there's any retribution, we're going to come down hard on you and this. He's he's living up to his word there. But the optics certainly don't look great. It's amazing that we were prepared for this moment. And when we got here, there are still this many people that are understandably upset about the timing and the context because I will say Long been a proponent. The idea that throwing it guys especially throwing high on guys on Agent Lee Baseball ain't the way to go. You're setting yourself up for something potentially awful at some point. And so punishing it at a higher level was always something I said of Major League Baseball was serious about getting that out of the game in ways they put lip service to but never actual teeth to. This would be a place to start suspensions off this length or in this case percentage, But we know with this backdrop, it's gonna be a lot tougher to sell people, especially because for most people, and I looked at that. All right, I get it. I don't really like throwing high on guys. I don't think it makes you tough. But most of the baseball public. Joe Kelly is a hero. Now he is, but let's look, let's be honest about a couple of things. I think everyone was all in on seeing how the asteroid's gonna have to deal with all this crap all season long right? We're all fascinated by that, From a fan's perspective and how it's going to be legislated by the players. I can.

"Whereas parents were asking him are you getting burned out? Are you getting burned out? And he would say no, this is what I love to do. And. And he would have the conversation with his dad. He would say dad I'm gonna play the big leagues one day. And you know, most parents will get that from their kids at some point. But his dad would say him. Yeah. You're gonna play in the big leagues. And you're going to be good. And he said that that stuck with him. And you know, both of his parents are big influences in his life. He's just he you've been around him. He's he's special. I think that you know, he's got a YouTube channel. I love the idea that you know, we talked about that off the air. He said, I started a YouTube channel he said because when I was a kid if my favorite player had a YouTube channel, I would watch every video that he put out, and I think that's a you know, he gets it. So there's a lot there. You know, when people talk about that he's one of the potential faces of the game. I don't think there's any question. Alex bregman special in a lot of ways. And you know, this you time covering baseball that there's always that concern, you know. Well, this guy be able to handle the off. Field stuff. Will he be able to balance things Alex's? I think he's pretty unusual in this regard. I can't imagine him not being able to handle it because he loves all of it. And he seemed very much at ease and doing all of it. Yeah. I agree. I agree. He's you know, this is. Yeah. This is what he's wanted. And he's you know, he's seen it coming. And he. Yeah. He understands it. He he he really loves it. He does. Both. Thanks for doing. This have fun tonight. Sorry BUSTER, we'll talk to you, brother. We'll be back in a moment with Sarah lines. But I hiring used to be hard multiple jobs sites..

"Know, that at some point at least he will be able to go in front of an arbitrator and make your case and say, here's why deserve this much money and not that much money. I think there's just less incentive for players to pulled out her. They know. Okay. Well, I just have to stick it out for a couple years here making the major league minimum. And then at least I'll have a chance to argue in front of some supposedly impartial source that I should be worth more. So I think the arbitration system has kind of killed holdouts in baseball this. Okay. So I understand that by saying this. I put myself in the position of being just like everybody else. I am not a baseball thirty as I'm saying this right now, I'm just a person who's talking about baseball pod guest. Let's say that who's who's a great player who's let's Mukhi beds. Just got like twenty million. Dollars. Mike trout is now in his years making thirty three million dollars. He's on likely to hold out. So let's say I dunno. Alex bregman, for example, out Springen decides to hold out this spring, which you know, he won't do baseball players. Don't hold out there not sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale anymore. But if bregman were to hold out what would happen. And I don't know. I after this podcast is over I'm going to try to do some more research on this. And maybe ask because of course, players are disincentivize to hold out because no one wants players to be able to hold out acts against the league's best interest. But if just one player held out like that the league has so much leverage. Because you can't baseball is not a position where it can all of a sudden decide. Oh, now, we better we better pay the players exactly what just change the structure of the league completely like team like the as or the raised all of a sudden have a massive bloated payroll that they couldn't afford in theory, if they had to pay their players to what they're actually worth if everybody were on the free market. Now someone like Alex bregman is not on the free market. But if he held out and demanded more money, eventually he and the Astros would come to an agreement that is well below at Brigham and it would be worth as a free agent, but he would still make more than whatever he's gonna make twenty nineteen presumably if he is even allowed to hold up because the Astros couldn't go into the season without bregman. He I mean, he's one of if not their single best player, and they could threaten to just move forward without him and say, well, we'll sign more when Gonzales or something, and we're going to be competitive, even without you and then break out of a job, but he's so valuable let's say bregman held out, and I don't know what he's going to get next season. But let's say t- in the answers agreed for like five or ten million dollars, which is still very very low for Alex bregman, but more than he would be expected to earn believe then what the president has now been set such that every single really good young player making the league minimum reclose league minimum with their for want to hold out for more money and everything would be disrupted and baseball wouldn't function anymore. So. So there is clearly something that's very powerful in place to prevent this. I don't know exactly what that is. In might just be what you said that players are given an understanding that they will make their money through arbitration and then eventually free agency. But it does make you wonder if there's going to be another baseball hold out into what it's going to look like. Yeah. I mean, maybe that's the ultimate recourse. If the next CBA fails to fix the situation than players will have to start taking matters into their own hands. I guess that's another reason why maybe baseball players or leci- device to hold out. His because baseball has a pretty powerful union or has hit least, you know, relative to other sports in the past. And so there's a sense that there is someone there who is kind of seeing to your best interests, and you don't necessarily have to take that risk personally because you'll have someone competent who is helping you at the negotiating table..
