Bregman, McCormick homer to help Astros beat Twins 5-1
"Alex Bregman finished two for four with a home run and two RBI in the Astros 5 to one win over the twins. Bregman's 7th Homer of the season started a three run second inning and the Astros led from that point on. I think we just came to the park and tried to battle today, trying to swing at good pitches and fortunate enough to do enough early in the game because they pitched really well. Brandon belak held the twins to one run over 5 and two thirds innings with 6 strikeouts while chas McCormick added a two run Homer. Adam spelling Houston

Bregman's homer lifts Astros over Cubs 6-4; Bellinger hurt
"Alex Bregman 7th inning two run Homer broke a four four tie and helped the asterisk to a 6 four win over the cubs. It was Bregman's 5th Homer of the season, and he finished the game two for four. All four were hit on the barrel head hard, so. It felt good. I'm a believer in over the course of one 62, everything. Will play out the way it's supposed to. Mauricio Dubois finished with three hits and two runs scored for the Astros who got 5 scoreless innings out of their bullpen. Christopher morell hit a three run Homer for the cubs. Flores homers to help Giants to 4-2 win over Astros
"Logan Webb allowed two runs over 7 and two thirds innings as the Giants beat the Astros four to two. Webb needed 46 pitches to get through the game's first two innings, but then he faced the minimum over the next 5. Giants manager gave Kepler. And he continued to attack the strikes on with his full mix and got ground balls. The game for us was efficient and even with some of the early mishaps I thought. Kind of locked him in a little bit, so really nice having for him. Joey Bart finished two for three with an RBI double for the Giants while Austin slater added a pair of hits. Alex Bregman homered for the Astros. Adam spole in Houston.

Corey jock singled in the 9th driving in one run for Houston, but it was Alex Bregman's two run base hit that clinched it for the Astros. To come in here and play our brand of baseball, probably for the complete three, I felt like pretty complete games for the first time this year was cool. Both starters, Christian Javier, for the Astros and max breed for the braves had solid outings, Javier had ten strikeouts in 6 innings. Kevin pillar homered for the braves in the 6th. And it was a good game. Two of the four inning and then me known Alex Bregman stepped up and knocked a three run Homer and that messed the whole thing up for the Yankees, but there was a point when Aaron judge, I think it was in the top of the 8th. This could go and could tie the whole thing up and it was right on the warning track. It was the wind. It was the Houston wind. Gotta be. And all these other guys, it's all like that's how that's how they've built the roster, Tom. They've built a roster for that and that's what the quants say works for a lot of baseballs. "Funny, funny, though that this is happening, I enjoy I enjoy the trash talking and hopefully it motivates the White Sox to push this to 5 games because I think that would be a really, really electric game 5 on the road. And then, hey, maybe the Astros respond and say, yeah, we're just going to kick your ass at minute maid park and that's going to be that's going to be the fun part of it of it all. Yeah, I really, I really have nothing else to say about the Astros because they pissed me off and obviously I think they're going to cake walk into the ALCS and do I think the cheating is still happening? Probably not. Do I think maybe it could be? Sure. Everyone is saying like the core of that Astros team is gone from 2017. And I'm like, what are you talking about? Marwyn Gonzalez. Everyone's like, yeah, Alex Cora's gone. No, marwan Gonzales is there. He's right. Yeah. He went back there. So they're like, yeah, Alex core has gone, Carlos Beltran has gone, like all these guys are gone and Ryan McCann is gone. Having gaddis has gone, I'm just like, dude, they have Jose Altuve. They have Carlos Correia, marwin is back. They have Julie guriel. They have Alex Bregman. That's the core of their team. The core of their team, if you're just talking three players, is Altuve Correa and Bregman. And they've been there the entire time. So I don't know why anybody would think that, oh, okay, yeah. A few players left like the supposed ringleaders left in Alex Cora and Carlos Beltran. You think there's no influence left behind? Okay, great, then that's the worst logic that you could possibly put forth. I don't necessarily think they're continuing to do this, but I also would not be surprised if white socked players had a hunch that something was going on if they were relaying the fact that the Astros, the White Sox players were tipping pitches or whatever it may be for you to be surprised that that might be happening again is the joke's on you at that point..

He's been officially placed on the injured list as of sunday with vaccine side effects. So there's no minimums dave for players who are placed on the cove injured list. So link goria could return in time for the series against the mets this coming tuesday anthony de scallop fani right acl inflammation played catch over the weekend on sunday. He plans to test his ankle. But it didn't show enough improvement to proceed with scheduled bullpen sessions so the giants placed him on the injured list. Here as well for you. Athletic fans chris bassett. He said to go undergo surgery on tuesday again. We talked about him getting hit in the face with the line drive on our last episode. Also stephen piscotty he had given Piscotty let's see here to quarter sewn shots already this year and it looks like surgery is likely to take care of nagging wrist issues that the outfielder has dealt with dating back to last year. So surgery most likely to take place in the off season for stephen piscotty for the brewers escobar. Escobar accident sunday's game with right hamstring discomfort He was a trade deadline. Acquisition for milwaukee he hit to ninety one with two home runs and eight ten psi in his first twenty games with the club. They hope that he will be date. Today's here moving forward and then freddy peralta right shoulder. Inflammation played catch on sunday for the first time since going on the injured list. He is hoping that history will be the minimum of ten days and that he will be able to return very shortly for the astros. Alex bregman he returned to the field. Friday night going two for four with a grand slam across seven innings while on his minor league rehab in aaa sugarland. He's been sidelined for nearly two weeks after suffering a setback recovering from a left quad straight but bregman said after the game. He's feeling great but a timetable. To return has not yet been established. But houston's offense eating up and they're going to get another big piece with bregman here in the near future. Jose you're kuwaiti right shoulder discomfort. He doesn't expect granddaughter return during their current road trip. Buddy isn't aaa for rehab assignments and it looks like he's going to be back here in the next couple of weeks and then lastly eddie rosario for the braves rosario dealing with a strained abdominal muscle. He's playing almost every day on his rehab assignment at aaa gwen it. So it looks like he could be back in the show here and just a couple of days. So let's wrap up segment number two with some surprising league leaders usually look at stats and standings here on mondays episodes. Well i wanted to condense this a little bit since. I'm going to take up the last two episodes talking about the standings as well as each team in general here so major league baseball most surprising league leaders when it comes to pitching you gotta go with the winds kyle. Kendricks has fourteen wins for a team. That's fifteen games under five hundred. Your league leader in wins is coming from a sub five hundred team which is pretty crazy to think about you. Also have austin adams who leads major league. Baseball in hits by pitches with sixteen so adams had trouble controlling the ball. Offensively the most pickoffs goes to ryan weathers of the padres. He's got eight pickoffs this year. He's only thrown seventy eight innings. So that's that's a lot for that little a dime there and then you also have some hitting stats here. Caught stealing in the national league jazz. Chisolm junior the marlins leads the league with seven for the national league but the surprises in the american league which shohei ohtani. He's been caught eight times this year. He does have eighteen steals but otani eight times is also very high when it comes to getting hit by a pitch. Jonathan indie of the reds leads the national league with eighteen this season and in the american league you have mark cannot of the oakland a.'s with twenty two. So he's at the top of the list and then your leader in sacrifice bunches adam wainwright of the cardinals with twelve. So the pitcher is usually lead that that category but wainwright at the top of the list as he's been impressive with twelve so one other thing to talk about the baltimore. Orioles lost their eighteenth consecutive game on sunday. Now is that the longest single season losing streak of the past sixty years. Actually there's a few teams ahead of them now. They're creeping up here on the list because it's eighteen and county but ahead of them. You have the two thousand five. Kansas city royals who lost nine thousand nine straight games. The nineteen seventy-five tigers also lost one thousand nine in a row that season. The one thousand nine hundred sixty nine montreal expos had twenty losses. Consecutively the nineteen eighty. Eight baltimore orioles. So that's not even a franchise record for baltimore as the eighty-eight orioles lost twenty one consecutive times. But you're all time leader. "Manufacturing in new england i think helped contributes to some of the demise. We're seeing in bowling right now. No i've been a few times to there's a a bowling alley called kings. They've got a couple of locations and it's really more of an entertainment center and you know they serve alcohol and the this there's lights and computers and you don't have to keep score and all well and good but it doesn't for me have the same magic because i'm throwing these big monster fred flintstone boulders and knocking down eight or nine pins and that's not good enough do you go bowling much tenpin To be perfectly honest. I think i've role tenpin since i was a kid and i don l. my first string until i was about fifty five. So i mean. It's it's weird when you grow so you grew up in new york new york. I came here after college. Did you have any inkling that there was such a thing can open bowling when you were a kid. No idea and my brother who still lives in new york had no idea when i told him i was writing this book. He had never heard of cattle bowling. That's so it it's a regional thing and it's An active game in massachusetts new hampshire and maine and also in nova scotia at new brunswick. So that's the international element and you have to wonder Maybe you know the answer to this. Why worked its way up there how it worked. Its way up there and why it didn't catch on elsewhere or any thoughts on that in a there. There's i can see how it caught on a new england because it started in worcester just kind of spread so that that makes sense to me and it didn't seem to work. Its way up the eastern seaboard in terms of why it hasn't spread. There's different theories but a lot of them just are based on the availability of the equipment. the bowmore companies out of business There's only one company. That's manufacturing candle. But it wasn't until i forget what year but It was still fairly recently. That accompanying in maine in garland manufacturing in saco maine Soko sake soko adult answer to anything. It's okay exactly They they came up. With a resin and a patented way of creating the candle pin the cattle pins and now instead of lasting just a few months now they left for years they might be in my personal history the most hated inanimate objects on the planet when they don't fall the way they're supposed to see what love about candle pin bowling for those who've never done it you can throw a perfect ball right down the middle and think this is it. I've got a strike or at least nine pins and you just punch out the two middle pins and they're all kinds area. It is but it's also a game of skill and it's a game of tact and and and strategy and i mentioned the fellow his name i think is some the sem be. I think his name is yes. Ralph ralph sam and he scored a to forty five of which is amazing because in kendall pins you're not likely to get a strike every time he got seven in a row and three spares. Wow that's amazing and Only one person tied the record. Since but basically that to forty five stands as the highest recorded sanctioned candle pin score in the game. When i broke one hundred and one string. I was excited. You know that was a big moment when i got three figures. there's so many aspects to this We'll we'll get into. But i got a jump ahead a little bit. And there's a picture of a rather well known athlete named babe ruth holding a couple of Candle pin bowling. "I will explain what candle pins are for the people listening all over the world of no idea what we might be talking about before we get there. There aren't too many left. That's the sad part. I mean it's a. It's a sport that was very popular for decades and decades. And all told how many of these exists today. When i started writing this book i had a list about him of about one hundred. Active candle pin places in new england. sadly some of those closed because of the pandemic and i'd say maybe a few dozen of those may be fortyish are members of the international candle pin bowling association. Okay the fact. The fact that there's an international association is His heartening i'll tell you that there's candida candida. God bless canada and may you forever reign supreme in the canopy lanes so candle pin bowling. Let's explain what it it actually looks like a candle pin hence the name but what is it and as opposed to ten pin or duckpin. Well it is a bowling game so it's the same premise. You throw a ball at a bunch of pins. The difference is the size of the balls and the shape of the pins so candle pins are taller than Ten pins there about fifteen almost sixteen inches tall and skinny. They're they're taper it a little bit at each end but they're essentially cylindrical so they're tall and skinny. The ball are way smaller than ten pinballs. The balls about the size of a grapefruit. I would say they weigh about two and a half pounds and they fit in your hand. They don't have finger holes and the other thing the two other things about candle pin that make different from the kind of bullying. The most people are familiar with is that you have three turns per frame instead of two and when you knocked down a pin it's not cleared so you can use the peons that have fallen down the would to try to knock over the pinson. Still standing absolutely ended all got started in the city of worcester. You right absolutely candle. Pin bowling was invented in the city of worcester in the late eighteen. Hundreds the in the details of this origin stories vary a little bit but the gist of it is. There was a guy named justin white who owned a billiards hall and bowling place in in downtown worcester on pearl street and he wanted to find more challenging game for his customers the regular bowling so he experimented the story goes he found some broomsticks in his closet and he tried setting them up. And you don't know it could knock those down because they were too skinny but eventually he hit on a version of the game that used What are what we know. Today is candle pins. They were smaller than the candle pins. We know today but It was version of the game. We know today. And then a guy named john muncie. Jack muncie entered the picture a few years later and the two of them. Perfect the game publicized. Game promoted the game and Jack muncie went on to be one of the founders of the national cattleman duckpin congress which established the rules for the game in about nineteen o six right and it is a much more challenging game than traditional ten pins because i mean you can get a strike strike and a strike in. It's very difficult. Although someone's done it once. I think Gotten mostly strikes in a couple of spares to get an amazing score your but What's interesting is the original pens. Were were rather fragile. Key bidding them with the ball the element of plastic. or whatever. you wanna call it coating. These pens must have made a big difference. Yes so the original pins are made wood and of course they splintered over time because they kept getting hit and they kept flying around.

Wilbur ready on a 11 to Josh Bell. That's a good pitch lot of movement on that changeup at 84. College. You just see that after that pitch, a little shoulder wiggle. He did quickly back in the plate. There's someone Soto that as I mentioned earlier, you know, in the spring they were really trying to learn from one soda in terms of approach one and two. He went fishing any fouled it off. So it's in and out of the glove of Higashio CA, Although They could actually hit the dirt first before Higashio could had a chance to catch it. I think one thing that I am seeing with Belle is just that swings, not the same, but in terms of not much stride. And being pretty quiet in the box. One into that one was elevated. He fouled it off at 87. It's so big. That it's one of those. You don't think you need a lot of movement. Michael Brantly doesn't move a lot. In The Gate
The Next Generation
"Recently. The washington post published an article about how young adults twenty-somethings called generation z. Are creating a real shift in how viewers connect with sports. And how many connect with sports if you think of the traditional ways of consuming sports you root for a team you watch and attend their games. You might be completely disconnecting from generation z. As an example the post cites. Espn's internal data that says that the percentage of twelve to seventeen year old stick and ball fans who call themselves. Avid fans has dropped from forty two percent ten years ago to thirty four percent today. What if i was to tell you that young people care more about what an athlete binge watches on net flicks. Then what he or she thinks about the next opponent or that viewers might not care about the athletes next opponent at all only that the athlete is a culturally significant. Figure if that sounds ridiculous to you then you might not understand this new generation of consumers. But if you're a decision maker stewarding the future of this sport you'd better learn to understand these jen's ears and give them what they want or you won't have a sport left to oversee now. The washington post article talked about gen z as relates to stick and ball sports. But we're going to do is spend this time talking about how horse racing relates to generation z. And what leaders in this sport can slash should do in order to reach them to do that. We have invited guests from a number of different viewpoints. I we have a racing executive looking to market his product. He is gregory. Vincent who is the vice president of marketing at gulfstream park. Next we have to young people with us. One became so hooked on this sport that he's now going through the race track industry program at the university of arizona. He is michael sand duly and full disclosure. His father matt has been a longtime espn event producer. Our third guest is madison. Bregman the founder and ceo of girls spelled with a z. At the end she consults with clients trying to reach young people. Young girls in particular. According to her linked in page she's worked with a number of clients including the nfl and she's the perfect person for this discussion because she can self reflect if you will on trends involving generation z. So welcome to all three of you. Let's start with mattie when it comes to sports in general how would you describe the differences between what appeals to gen z irs versus older generations. What degen's ears care about. Yeah i think the big thing is that where older generations would sit down and watch an entire football baseball basketball games. This generation is so much more driven by watching clips or highlights. The way that we're consuming it with that. Being said is different too because we're not watching it on tv watching it on mobile devices on different platforms like twitch and and snapchat instagram. And really the way that we're interacting with teams and players as different as well where older generations once again. We're fans of specific teams because you grew up in that city or whatever have some kind of connection to it and this generation more fan of individual players can so for example. If i'm a huge fan of baker mayfield. I may not necessarily love the cleveland browns. But i liked baker and would wear a skirt near water. Whoever it may be michael san duly. You've heard what she just said about your generation. This is your generation. How does that jibe with your thinking as you were being attracted to horse racing. Well horse racing is the number one sport in my heart. But i but i'm a fan of all sports so i completely agree with matt in the sense that our generation likes players rather than teams a lot of my friends like lebron or curry and so on in horse racing. You can kind of do that. You pick your hero for the year for lack of our term. Unfortunately nowadays everybody gets sent to orderly and this year you've built a brand of this year you could arguably make the case for to the law in tis. The law garnered a lot of fan interest because he came from a grassroots fail. I think it was the saratoga. Select that nolan in toga. Bottom out of and he grew into this the big story line. And that's what everybody likes. Everybody likes a big story. That's what attracts fans.

I absolutely applaud him for coming down. Hard on everything that's happened. So tell me how you think he's. Words would go over with a George Springer and Altoona Bregman Carlos Correa marlins not on the Astros anymore but certainly saw him early this spring address this because I feel like that they would just listen and say nothing. It wouldn't be any complaints among the Astros and Mike. Trout speaks in this way. What do you think yeah? It's a good question. You know for all the apologies. We've now seen the Astros gives since that initial press conference. I still don't know if there's a lot of remorse or regret at least I haven't been down there in West Palm was Houston. But that's the feeling I get from far that they did it. They know they're supposed to apologize. But they're still feeling of. We got away with it. We one where the champs so be it So I don't think that feeling of remorse. Is there now. Is that going to change? Because Mike Trout says he's lost respect for them. Probably not you would hope they. Would you know do a little inner self reflecting and sink a little more about their actions? But I think they're also it's also easy to say. This happened in two thousand seventeen. We don't care moving on and maybe that's what the sport itself does need to do at some point this spring and I feel like that is best for the Astros at this point. Let's face it. They've taken a lot of incoming shots they punch back the other day. I think it's time for them to stop worrying about trying to save what they've already loss. You know watching Carlos Correa over the weekend pushed back a talk about individual situations in the world series when they weren't cheating and I I thought it was absurd. Yes we were cheating in the first inning the second and third inning but in that run-scoring spot in the fence. We weren't cheating you know and to extend my a comparison the astros with someone who cheated in neighborhood poker game. Can you imagine if someone said? Yeah we dealt from the bottom of the deck with firsthand second anther. We played that fourth. Hand straight up like other players. Don't WanNa hear that and I feel like that while Carlos was passionate in trying to absolve Jose altuve and trying to draw lines. It's a waste of time. Their legacies in cement. It's over in terms of the Court of public opinion. No absolutely and we all know. There's only one solution for the Astros and that's to go out and win the World Series in twenty twenty and at least remove the cloud of suspicion for this season. When we're pretty sure they're not gonNA Poll any shenanigans released today extent. They have that is the only way two thousand seventeen as you said that legacy is incident. You know it's always GonNa be be doubt now. They're going to go out and prove that they actually are as good as we think they. They are at least as good as they've been the last three years

Astros' Jose Altuve alleged to have buzzer under jersey to cheat
"They need to Major League Baseball needs to do a serious investigation on some of these players like out too vague because they'll be able to find out I believe if they really want to know the truth I'm not sure of Major League Baseball wants to know the truth because all too there is such a beloved guy you know and then one of the best probably the best you know hit one of the best hitters in baseball do they really want evidence to come forward to show that al to van Bregman somebody's other guys were wearing electronic devices just like Major League Baseball didn't want the steroid stuff to come out I think they're full of crap I don't think they want the stuff to come out I don't how on earth if you are Major League Baseball how on earth do you allow this stuff to happen to not know anything about it how can a team keep this quiet for the entire year and by the way I don't buy the fact that it was only last year I can tell you that I they were probably doing this for several years Cora all these guys they probably were involved with this for a long period of time don't you tell me right now that all to say do you know deserves to be the MVP don't you tell me that now when you have an advantage like that were you know not only the type of pitcher gonna be getting but what part of the plate it's going to be on the location and you're a professional Major League Baseball player for Christ's sake there's a lot of college shooters that could probably get some hits and and and and perform if they know where a a major league pitchers throwing the ball and what kind of picture gonna get no wonder while to be had a metal part in fact I'm surprised they didn't have more out of the park in that series or any series in the playoffs it's a joke and it's a job for everyone to say that all too they should be punished at all for this and I believe one hundred percent that he was wearing one of these devices I believe there are other players on the Astros are wearing these devices as well so this is this is indefensible in my opinion Major League Baseball you better do your job you better find out what happened here the store is not going away no and I think they will do their job I think that in again there's there's no guaranteed evidence but there there's definitely some there's some evidence that points to it looks like this is probably the case they should lose their championship in two thousand seventeen like I said and how to obey and Bregman anybody warring those buzzer should be banned from baseball
