"I've been working out of the Home Studio, as I'm sure many of us have over the last number of months due to the COVID, nineteen situation, then busy at work on season, two of cold, I've had a lot of people asking on social media when it's. It's coming what it's going to be about and unfortunately I don't have a great announcement to make just yet, but I am here to say that that work is going on I've been doing interviews and going through records and very excited about case that we're going to be covering in season two of cold in the meantime, some interesting developments have been taking place with the Susan Powell story. Jury. Back in February I was actually up in Tacoma. Washington, covering the trial between Susan Powell's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox Against the state of Washington over the deaths of Charlie and Brayden Powell. That is a substantial. Monetary. When you're looking at whether or not. The Department is at fault. Tests that evidence and when you test the Evans. You'll see who's responsible for the murder. burs. Charlie rader. Smith you that when you test evidence. Over one. That trial was actually put on hold due to the pandemic. Monitoring the situation hopefully we will be dropping in with some additional information and content, regarding the trial and the outcome of that in the near future. But the real reason I'm here in your feed right now is to talk to a colleague a friend of Mine Becky, Bruce, from KSL Newsradio and today I am going to flip the table a little bit and talk about her new series, which just launched and has rocketed up into the top twenty on apple podcasts. It's called hope and darkness, and it deals with the attention of a an American citizen named Josh Holt through this kind of whirlwind. Whirlwind Romance he ends up down in Venezuela in a period of extreme turmoil for that country by the summer of two thousand Sixteen Madero declared a state of emergency and the opposition called for a recall election to remove him. That's when we are seeing people getting shot in the streets. I was reading a report this morning. We're talking about five hundred people who had been disappeared where talking about selective killings does when we are seeing full blown repression. Venezuela is today. The second most authoritarian country in Latin America the only country that is more authoritarian than Venezuela scoop. All of that is to say. Venezuela was already very much in crisis long before Josh got there. And things were pretty bad. Right as he arrived. As I'm sure many people did with cold coming in feeling like I know the Susan Powell store. There's nothing I can learn here. We know what happens. I was blown away because I had no idea about why or conditions there so bad. So how did we get from a country that fifty years ago was the most prosperous and stable democracy in South America. To a state that might arguably be failing. Joshua's experience suddenly finds himself in captivity, accused of being a CIA spy, possessing all of these weapons and his new wife. Who let's be fair. He's not known that long, or that well is incarcerated with him. And I think many of us would look at that situation. Go well. Maybe that's time that you think about having this union and older or something. She has two kids to take care of. Yeah. Nobody would have blamed her for being like. You know what I I feel for you man, but I gotta take my kids now. And she fortunately had the support of her mother close by who was able to watch the girls, which I think gave her some resolve to stick around and. Never backed down, and at any given time, she could've earned her freedom. Just by saying Yeah Josh is totally a spy. Those were his weapons she never did. We probably see headlines about turmoil in places like Venezuela and you think that's a world away, but we are listening to this podcast in a moment right now in our country where we are seeing civil unrest over the death of George Floyd. Police pushed. The protesters are pushing back more officers or get involved there here comes an officer. He's GonNa. He's firing some of those rounds now. You can see some of those shots happening heads up. Of the bottle. Okay, okay. That didn't get US close, but didn't get us. He saw one of those officers. They're shooting those rounds to to try to disperse the crowd and for the police like. Oh. Okay. All right. Yeah, that was loud. He'll K.. Good. Good okay. We're good. Okay. What is it like to be releasing an episode about turmoil in Venezuela, at the same time you're watching. What's happening in our country? There are a lot of surprising parallels between this Walea in two thousand, fourteen, Twenty Fifteen, twenty sixteen, and even more currently, and what I'm seeing happened in the US. Right now and I have to tell you that's giving me some pause I had to ask myself. Would I be able to tell this story? If Josh weren't a white American. And I think honestly the answer is no I probably. Wouldn't I mean the reality of the world that we live in that sometimes a lot of the time it's an unjust and unfair place, and that goes for the United States just as well as it does for Venezuela. But I think, or at least my sincere hope is that because Josh has some privilege in that space as a white American guy who was held in a pretty horrendous place to be held. We can tell the story and maybe make some change for people who don't have his privilege. And that's really kind of our goal. A obviously one podcast is not going to change overnight. Civil rights issues here in the US or in Venezuela. Maybe it starts a conversation and that's.

So I gotta go back there. 'cause being here is not going to do anything. Once the flames were doused Gary walked. Through the still smoking remains of the house even. We're pretty sure because I'm on call with the social worker seeing the boys going hearing them scream, and then the explosion you knew. But you still gotta conferment. Josh had spread gallons of gasoline throughout the entire house. Then ignited it going through and seeing the bodies and stuff like that. That was a hard thing to, you know, just two little boys that were innocent and had no play into that in unfortunately, mom been taken away. So they'd been that those three bodies were altogether in a back bedroom, a blackened metal hatchet sat next to Josh's body. Gary could see that Josh had used it to bludgeon. Both of the boys about the back of the neck, knocking them unconscious. Coroner's though, determined the fire and smoke inhalation actually caused the deaths. Gary positively identified the bodies as belonging to Josh, Charlie. And Brayden Powell dental records later confirmed that observation fired as a lot of damage, but the explosion kind of put a lot of the fire out to some essence, you know, blew the roof off stuff like that in. There was some damage, but you could tell unfortunately, you know. Someone will always be up here 'cause you can tell.

A significant winter storm was sweeping across much of the United States on the morning of Monday, December seventh two thousand and nine you dropped snow from the Sierra Nevada to the Great Lakes a few inches had already fallen on the floor of Utah Salt Lake valley during the overnight hours, Debbie Caldwell was up early as she always was preparing for the arrival of daycare kids, the trickled in shutting coats and caps, some still rubbing sleep from there is they ride with red snotty noses from the freezing cold in the care of anxious parents who were bracing for a work week that was starting off with a bad commute. Debbie marked the time of each arrival on her log two of the kids, Charlie and Brayden Powell weren't there which was off because they usually arrived like clockwork at six forty AM on Mondays Tuesdays and Fridays pickups in the afternoons. Were another matter. Josh their dad made a habit of showing up late or not at all that could be a blessing because he made the other parents on comfortable, they had a nickname for Josh. They called him rocks for brains. Debbie didn't much care for Josh herself. She also didn't care for clients who showed up late, but a little delay made sense that morning in light of the weather. She continued with her Monday routine expecting Charlie and braid into arrive at any minute the clock ticked past seven AM. And then eight still no sign of the Powell's. I was thinking. This is not like Susan. So I called the house, and then when I didn't get any phone call it house, I thought well, maybe she was running late to work or something. So Josh took and dropped her off. And and he's running doing something else. So I called her direct line at her job and didn't get any answer there. And so then I'd call his work, and they said he hadn't shown up, and so I became a little concerned because the week before Susan had talked to my husband about how to fix the furnace and change the filters and get the furnace ready to go for the season. And so I became a little concerned that something was wrong. Maybe they were in the house, and they were suffering from carbon monoxide. Debbie had her hands full, though, six other kids needed her attention some were due at school. She loaded them into our van and hit the road. But concern nagged her she decided to detour from the school rounds to Josh and Susan's house. She pulled into the coldest sack her van rolling partway up the driveway of the Powell house making I tracks in the virgin snow. There was no tire tracks coming out of the garage. That was known for footprint side pounded on the door and pounded on the door. I didn't get any answer. So I was on. I was on a school run ahead. Other children that I was carrying for that I needed to get to school. So I went back to to my van, and I pulled up her emergency contact registered, it's on the form. And so I called the emergency contact which was Jennifer graves. And then I went to drop the kids off at school. Jennifer graves was Josh Powell sister. I woke up kind of feeling a little bit. Relieved and happy and looking forward to the future because we've had a really hard year we'd close to business that was failing. We'd had some other significant issues with other family members. And that was just very difficult, and we felt like those things were being handled in behind us, and we'd we'd gone through the worst of it. And and so I was pretty optimistic about the future. And then. We got that phone call from Tevi in. It was just. Devastating completely threw us for a loop. Again, Jennifer told Debbie she hadn't heard from her brother or sister in law that morning, she grabbed her kids and her mom, Theresa and started driving the snowy roads north toward Josh and Susan's house. Jennifer lived in west Jordan, that's about a fifteen minute drive away on a good weather day from Sarah circle. Well, on the way Teresa dialed nine one one. It was nine fifty three AM. His wife and their two children haven't responded to anything. That's morning. They normally go to work and pick him into the gate cared to or Tonette started to go. And they're not responding befalls then responding to people on their doors. No trucks coming out of their driveway. It wasn't this morning. A little while later when they're out of town. I haven't had any anything from them saying that they would be out of town. And it's not like them to not call their daycare lady. They're very dependable people's work. Like, Debbie Terry worried of furnace malfunction might have filled. The house on Sarah circle with carbon monoxide gas five minutes from the house now. Okay. I have notified they're gonna be en route they're funded two six to five to west or just thirty nine forty five. So we arrive before the police and tried to see if we could get into the house. I sent my kids around in the bag. No doors were open. We couldn't get in west valley city patrol officers Jerry Brady and Matt roads for the first to arrive in response to the nine one one call they showed up within minutes at ten AM to find Teresa, Jennifer and her kids out front of the house. They pounded on the door and shouted no response. The officers checked all of the doors and windows all were locked they attempted to peer into the garage through a window. They're only to find it blocked by a blanket. In fact, they noticed all of the windows were covered. The blinds in the large bay window on the front of the house seemed to sway as if blown by hot air rising from furnace spent more evidence of possible carbon monoxide poisoning. Meantime, Jennifer was going door to door in the coldest sack trying to find someone who might have recently talked to Josh you're Susan one neighbor gave Jennifer the name and phone number for tier see Hellawell. I didn't have her in my contacts on my phone. I don't know who it was. But I decided to answer it. And she said, this is Jennifer graves Josh's sister. When's the last time you talked to sue them, and that was instantly? Just had this feeling of dread come over me. And I was like what do you mean? Just talked yesterday we walked home from church together. And she said, well, she's missing. They're all missing. There's no tracks at their house. None of us can find them. They're not at work here. See and Susan we're both members of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints and belonged to the same ward or local congregation cures told Jennifer about a Facebook post Susan had made on Sunday morning. It mentioned how Josh had won a flip video camera from his work Christmas party on Saturday night. And so we were afraid that since he loved taking pictures, maybe he had driven them up to the canyon, and they'd gone off a cliff or they'd still stuck somewhere. Freezing all night, the patrol officers were growing more concerned to they figured Josh Susan and the boys were either unconscious in the house or hadn't been home since the storm started during the night the called for backup sergeant arrived and tried to use a device called a bump key to unlock the door. But it didn't work short of options. The police turned to Terry and asked for permission to break a window. It took some convincing. But she agreed. It was eleven thirty nine AM. Justly calling. I could have scheduled with the boys today. Eight forty we haven't seen her Camille. So he was just concerned tragic. That if you just look for Josh victory. We have a phone call from Josten Javagal cleary. Making me out. Not here for me. Either. Not long. The up to noon, so December seven. For me. Call them. Worried about.
