To's over the years for trade and salary cap and all that fun stuff and he's always been a huge help I had a conversation. This morning with ben standing ben and i've had a lot of conversations. He comes on the podcast all the time. Anyway he said something. And i didn't have time to go into it in great length but he essentially said when the topic of signing jon allen to a contract extension which by the way. I've heard that they are interested in doing In that john is interested in staying. He is entering his option year. And then he's right. Now and unrestricted free agent at the end of next year and ben made the point. He said it's going to be very hard for washington to keep this. You know young star laden in. It's becoming that j i with chase young and montas sweat and doron pain and jon allen. It's going to be very hard to keep this front for together on this roster. It's going to be very expensive and it's going to be hard for them to do. Do you agree with that or not. I do agree. It's going to be challenging. It's going require some creative thought around contracts structuring a cap management and. I know the guy plays on the other side of the ball. But you've also got to figure out to pay terry mcauliffe at some point pretty soon here too so again you know. You don't have a franchise quarterback contract on the roster right now so that does give you some flexibility you. You've done fairly well drafting but you're going to continue to have the draft. Well you're going to have to have college free agents make the roster if you aspire to be able to keep that defensive line together it's going to be a challenge. Obviously you know we've had a delay we've had something happened because of the pandemic that we have not had in a long time In that is the salary cap not going up significantly right And i think they put a ceiling on it for the twenty twenty two season. That can't get go up above. I think it's two hundred ten million or something like that. Maybe you know specifically what is low eight to eight okay from where it is now at one eighty five correct. Okay spot after that. It's going to start going up significantly again with the new. Tv deals kicking in place. It sandra i mean a lot of what you know. we're talking about we'll be contingent on how much the salary cap goes up and how much room each team has. And what we saw over the years is that you know they pushed some of these contracts some of the expensive part of these contracts into the future when they knew the cap would sort of catch up to it right correct. And that's kind of what. I was alluding to a couple seconds. Go when i mentioned it's gonna require creative contract structure in creative cap management. Because to your point you do have to project that the cap is going to increase next season increased significantly in off seasons thereafter. And so you can delay some of that cap accounting of the deals like for example when landon collins. First time. His unrestricted free agent deal here. A couple of years ago is year one cap number on. What was the deal. That was i think like fourteen million per year was like three million dollars and that was just due to contract structured. You do the same thing with. Somebody's defensive lineman with terry maclaurin. Then you've got a chance at being able to retain all of them but again it's going to require that that delaying of the cap accounting into future years and it's gonna also require drafting well and getting cheap labor effectively any chance brandon share hat that there's any incentive for him to sign a long term deal by july fifteen twenties playing this year for eighteen million bucks. So it's not by coincidence. That i didn't mention him when i was talking about these long term deal. I don't i. Don't think that benefits brandon sheriff to Do a multi year deal with washington. Unless it's a offer that he simply cannot refuse that makes him head and shoulders above the top of the guard market You know he. I that brandon would be truly wanted to be here long. Zarni probably would've done deal by now And he's he's gotten paid you know a a king's ransom over last season on tag and this coming season on attack and next off season will go into free agency. He can decide if he wants the move on And somewhere else depend upon how the washington's season kinda plays out. Does he wanna go somewhere else where he has a little bit better chance to win. Maybe you'll get a championship. I think playing just under the tag and not doing a multi year by july fifteenth gives brandon. Scherf everything that any player wants a lot of money for one year's worth of work and flexibility going into next offseason to choose his own. What do you think logan. Thomas is worth because he really performed last year. They don't have a lot of depth that that position or you know perceived depth that position And he is in the final year of deal they cut last year. That was relatively cheap What do you think that they'd have to pay him to. It's to keep them around for the next few years. He doesn't get the ten million per year when you look at the top of the tight end market. You've got guys who got paid handsomely in free agency. Somebody's got most recently in free agency. You know the jonnu. Smith hunter henry is our world got twelve and a half than the elite guys. Kelsey kit or at fourteen fifteen. He doesn't get to ten million plus but do think that there's a sweet spot for logan as a thirty year old tight and probably if tyler he'd be got seven point two five he's logan probably in that neighborhood if he ended up kinda in that seven eight and a half number i think that's probably his sweet spot for a contract extension giving it's worth washington trying to do something now with the cap space that they have and getting something done now. Yeah i think you wanna reward logan You know he's the guy who he brought in last off season for cheap played really well my census. He's he's he's a good locker room guy and it's not gonna cost you a ton of money of the drafted tied in the fourth round this year But you know what you're going to get out of logan thomas and again it's not gonna cost you a ton of money and back to jon allen I think that they are talking to him or are about to talk to him about an extension. Where does he fit in on the d. tackle range. I mean right now erin. Donald's the highest average per year. Right for the defensive tackles correct. So where where would john. We're see twenty plus million. That's tough you know. The elite guys are twenty plus. I'm we're doing okay. Aaron donald's twenty two and a half. I i'm sorry. That's what i was doing. So we're joined the twenty one. So i don't know that he's a twenty million per year guy. I think he's productive and he's everything you want as a player in the locker room.
