Bloomberg business flash Hi everybody 17 minutes past the hour we update markets every quarter hour here on Bloomberg radio While investors are weighing up the positives and negatives and it seems like it's a bit of a standoff here at the moment just about every market that's up and running is trading either a quarter of a percent up or down and it's pretty steady here The straights times index basically unchanged The Thai X unchanged the S&P ASX 200 is up a quarter of a percent and EK is up a little under a tenth of a percent U.S. futures are turning a little bit lower but a very strong three day gain in the S&P 500 at the moment I mean he's down about two thirds of 1% Some of the negatives oil holding onto his surge well up over a $100 a barrel The Kremlin casts some doubt on how much progress was being made in ceasefire talks between Russia and Ukraine So that's weighing a little bit Also the U.S. saying that Vladimir Putin might make nuclear threats if the war drags on serious negative And China stocks listed in the U.S. fell the NASDAQ golden dragon index off 4.6% But a number of positives too JPMorgan saying it processed funds for interest payments due in Russian government to dollar bonds and also a flurry of comments in the China sphere that indicate a little bit of loosening Carrie lam talking about Hong Kong Chinese president Xi Jinping talking about easing off on some of the COVID measures to protect the economy We'll do it again in 15 minutes This is Bloomberg Add an update on markets now an update on news with Ed Baxter All right thank you very much Ryan President Biden and she going to meet tomorrow to talk about their respective positions on Ukraine Sources are telling Bloomberg that the U.S. is worried that president Xi is moving closer to Russia as the war wears on Pentagon says Ukrainian forces are doing an excellent job on the ground stalling Russian forces and Russian forces continue to shell civilian locations Pentagon has issued part of a report saying that as Vladimir Putin's ground attack fails we may hear more threats about him using nuclear weapons as the economic walls close in on him The U.S. House has voted to end Russia's favored trade status if it goes through the process it will allow the U.S. to sharply raise tariffs on Russian goods entering the country Chinese president Xi Jinping has pledged to reduce the economic impact of his COVID fighting measures while reiterating the commitment to its COVID zero policy And South Korea is maintaining restaurant and cafe closing time of 11 p.m. but it's going to allow up to 8 people in a private gathering And I have one more Moderna asking for a fourth shot to be approved by the FDA for all adults This goes further than what Pfizer asked for Pfizer asks for over 65 In San Francisco I met Baxter this is Bloomberg Paul All right thanks very much We're joined this half hour by chief Asia market strategist at JPMorgan asset management and ty we've been talking a little bit about China's broader economy but more specifically you do like Chinese equities What do you like in particular Well I think a few things First of all while there's been a lot of concerns on Internet stocks or ADRs there are areas where we are seeing a lot of policy support in particular I think two areas One is on renewable energy and decarbonization I think China's pledge to reduce carbon emission is going to be very supportive to renewable energy as well as associated industry The second area is going to be on consumption despite the clover challenges right now the whole idea of carbon prosperity is going to lift the income level of some of the poorer parts of the country and that could potentially lead to a second wave of middle income group on the rise So I think from that perspective we are looking for sectors with a policy tailwinds despite some of the challenges that we've seen with ADR Internet stocks in the last 12 to 18 months So a delicate question here ty and I'm wondering what the house view over at JPMorgan asset management is on China's relationship with Russia after the war in Ukraine We know that there are a.

"That would be phenomenal. For his career. Now Washington's tight end is Logan Thomas, I'm a big fan of his, as well. He played quarterback actually in college at Virginia tech. He has worked very, very hard to transition from a quarterback to a Titan. Put together a good career, he entered the league, I think a 2014. And his work ethic is very, very much impressed me throughout his career in the NFL Logan Thomas, tight end, number one, he's awesome. Now the offensive line is solid in Washington, not amazing, but solid like very good. They franchise tag guard Brandon Schiff, good move there. They need to solidify things. I think moving forward. After this year, probably, Washington is going to have to make a change or two on their offensive line. Because they need to make sure they have talent in the future beyond just this year. But for now, for this year, they're good enough to win, and I'm like, okay, not the best in the NFL, they're not New Orleans, they're not the Patriots, but they are definitely fairly fairly good. Now the biggest move that Washington made this off season they signed veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick fits magic they call him. I got a one year deal and Ryan Fitzpatrick is a kind of quarterback that makes you pick a side. You either believe in the guy or you don't. Now, I will tell you, I'm one of the only people who probably feels really, really good about Ryan Fitzpatrick. I have a reason I will tell you in a moment, he turns 39 in November. And he's been on 9 different teams in his NFL career, including Washington. And it's been a very up and down and inconsistent career where for moments you'll look fantastic, then I'll have a gamer that was like 5 interceptions and you're like, what's going on? And I actually, here's why I believe in Ryan Fitzpatrick. This is the first time in his entire NFL career. That he's at a not just a team believe in him, but had a good football team believe in him and then committed to him. Remember, once upon a time, Brian Fitzpatrick was in New York and buffalo and Houston, and he started all over the place for many many different teams. But the teams where he was the starting quarterback in the past, were really, really bad. And in Tampa, they never really wanted him. He was always number two and never first choice. Remember they drafted Jameis Winston number one over all. They were always hoping that Jameis would develop into their starting quarterback. And he never really got I think a fair look in Tampa. And the same story happened in Miami where he was the backup in Miami. They were like, you're going to mentor two, we drafted to a number 5 overall. And so I think inner squad politics have always been a problem for Ryan Fitzpatrick, getting on the field and staying on the field. If he had been the best quarterback in Miami, it wouldn't have mattered because and I think you could argue he was, but they're like, well, it doesn't matter. We invested a top 5 pick into we're going to ride or die with this guy and commit to him. You're too old to be committed to. And people do not realize how.
