"Oh man that would be that's. I aggressively mediocre as the nicest thing that anybody has said about the two thousand eighteen cal off now those those half teams whether it was the the boston college the last don brown boston college defense and what they look like on offense what twenty fifteen mizzou you know the the texas tech teams during the the cliff kingsbury time there were some horrid units on the other other side of the field from a an excellent one and that was it's no different with cal last year. So is there hope this year that they'd rather like a seventy two percent instead of a half team yeah yes seventy two percent. You'd probably feel that way about this offense well. It could be a different starting quarterback chase garbage. I wasn't great but it could be was divan monster the u._c._l._a. transfer. They're battling right now. Brandon mcelwain moving running back chris brown was released serviceable. They get coa crawford the michigan transfer receiver <hes>. They've only gotten more talented. They're basically only okay on offense running the ball with was patrick layered last year and he's gone on but with how much they return on defense i understand that means the degree to which there have team can only go up because on all all three levels. They're bringing back their best players essentially but i think it has to get better. I think they reached rock bottom so i think they can simply be bad. I think they can simply be not great and that would lift them up. They went they go seven and five last year with nothing on offense correct and i mean it's what six and six if you include the ballgame and the the fact that one of those wins was against a an f._c._s. team but nothing the ugliest bowl game in the best possible way in the cheese ball against t._c._u. And there bowl team with nothing on offense. Essentially they lose their best receiver before the season starts last year transfer. I think it's something to build on. I think you're like okay well. We were able to win without an offense so even if we have a little it's an improvement and so i think they're going to get there. I think they can get to not great win an extra game and go eight and four as a best case more the same same six and six five and seven but the man evan weaver and cameron good. It's probably the best linebacker duo in the conference correct <hes> upfront luke beckett. It was a monster at times last year especially at u._s._c. and then these are both not their best units on defense because they're secondary is locked in with ashton. Davis is an all american caliber safety. Jalen hawkins also really good at safety and then they've had cam vitamin elijah hicks on both sides for what feels like eleven years at corner. They're so locked in on defense that the offense is going to have every advantage. The offense should be starting on third base and so for that reason for that reason i my my chips are being pushed to the center of the table. Not that cal is going to be a good team but that cal is going to be a nasty team if cows and nasty team am i allowed to talk about evan weaver as the newfound dream weaver and singers sure sure but you gotta keep it going all season long through thick and thin tree weaver has also nasty but cal the cal defense is legitimately fun onto watch evan weaver is a converted defensive linemen and just wrecking shop had like one hundred fifty some odd tackles last year..

"That's where I'll be with game day radio. Oklahoma state had Oklahoma hoping that the the spread is not an indication of how the quality this game. But Oklahoma's the three touchdown favourite here. What do you see? Yeah. Normally you'd like to go with the large underdog in a rivalry game like this. But I I like the Sooners coming off a disappointing effort against Texas Tech started out last week Murray toss couple interceptions tech out a couple of very short touchdown drives put Oklahoma whole and the sooner struggled most of the game just to come out with the five point win. But it did have six hundred eighty three yards. Again, you look at their last time they played at home. They beat Kansas state fifty one to fourteen just blew the doors off them in Oklahoma state had a very disappointing here. They lost that same case. Eighteen by nineteen. They lost a Texas Tech by twenty four four big twelve losses. Ready? The one game. They did win was at home. They circle the wagons. It was Texas Texas was without their starting quarterbacks in the first quarter and Oklahoma state at two hundred fifty yards in the first quarter. Then just two hundred fifty dollars the rest of the game hung on for three point win. But I don't think Oklahoma state can match scores with this potent Oklahoma team, and I look for the Sooners off a close win last week back big even in bedlam. I'm laying the three scores in this one. Let's go out to the west coast. Tammi. Great. Thanks. At least you get to see the scenery. Phil. Let's go out to the west coast and a game that has a much smaller spread. But again, it's important to both teams trying to get bull. Eligible cow at USC the Trojans just a five point favorite against Cal team. I'm sure you'll address this. It has one of the better defense in the country. Yeah, they do. In fact, Cal on the season holding opponents to ninety eight yards per game below their season average. That's number fifteen in the country. They just Washington ten Washington state the nineteen so they're playing great defense this year promised been consistency on offense. You know? They've got the quarterback Brandon mcelwain who could make the big place. But he turns over as much as he makes the big plays to eight ratio this year or go at the safe guy. Chase carver's. But with him the offense doesn't move a lot. So it's sort of been a pick your poison with the quarterbacks for Cal. Now, interestingly with USC their season's done, you think it's all written off. They don't have a chance. But if the Oregon ducks play good football down the stretch USC could very well. Win the Pac twelve south Oregon's plan Utah this week victory. Their opens the door for USC. Amazon state has got that same team next week on the road in autzen and USC finishes with Cal and UCLA. If we're. Knocks off those teams USC all of a sudden in the Pac twelve south title game. And I like the way that Trojans ran the football last week granted which Oregon state but three hundred thirty two yards seven point five yards per carry said where is doing a great job running back JT Daniels now getting into form as the season goes on. I think see him improve and US's got a pretty good defense as well. Holding opponents to forty one yards per game below their season average lost one game at home in his career there. It's nineteen and one now and the spreads rather cheap at five. I like USC minus the five in one film. My last question for you. It's a hypothetical one. And I know that guys like you love hypothetical questions..

"Calbears football on Katie how eight ten. Path open receivers how Mike Morath Blake McMorris gets free in the right flat. And at the second career touchdown for California. Well, rub route in the right flat. And he was wide open. I noticed. I said rub not pick. Pick is illegal watch yourself everybody. Does it picks her illegal? But if you call it a rub, it's okay. It was a nice rubber out for and that is a big man catching that football. It is close to three hundred pounds. But Morris his second scoring pass of the year and the fourth of his career. So they've been able to utilize him very well in that role. Again, it was a thirty nine yard drive in six plays after the Weaver interception and that gave Cal. It's only lead at seven to three Capri. We're just gonna head another statistical picture and bear in mind that Washington state have been leading the country and passing four hundred five yards per game. They made a run down the stretch, but came up well short of that three thirty four tonight, the total for Gardner men's shoe. That's when you say a guy has a three hundred yard game say he was kind of kind of an off night. He only got three hundred and thirty four yards. Three hundred yard games were a big deal back in the fifties. In fact, when I threw for three hundred and fourteen yards against army in nineteen fifty seven. I think that was the only three hundred yard passing game of the entire year. Is that right in NCA football nowadays? Three hundred yard games are a dime a dozen. Yeah. The game has changed. I you probably didn't throw fifty one times in a game too often. Oh, six that day. And that was considered outrageous. Pretty outrageous guy. Mentioned was thirty five for fifty one for those three thirty four one. Touchdown one interception. Cal through four hundred seventy nine yards tonight. Garber for one twenty seven of them. He was fifteen of twenty six Brandon mcelwain was three for seven for fifty two governors. One touchdown one pick and mcelwain the one interception. A rushing yardage Cal the advantage one hundred twelve yards the seventy nine over the Cougars. First downs. Oiseaux had the advantage twenty three to twenty third downs. Cow was four fourteen not good Washington. State a pedestrian for twelve four thousand Cal to for two and was was over one total plays almost dead. Even Cal sixty nine. Sixty six yards per play the Cougars six point three two cows four point two red zone. Cal is true of three was four or five possession time. Cow boy until I intersection in the end zone. Cal was really controlling things. The second half. They wanna put for thirty one to nineteen time of possession to twenty eight forty one turnovers were two and sacks were big set to cover sex five to one in favor of the cougs. And they had had ten tackles for loss. That's a lot. Yeah. Fails. Yeah. That s a lotta T F L's. All right. So more individual stats rushing. Chase garbage was the bears top runner with eleven carries for sixty seven. Just Wilcox said that RPO's run pass option would be big for Cal. And that proved to be very important but the bears just couldn't generate enough offensively. Patrick Laird carry the ball eighteen times for forty yards and layered also had four catches for thirty eight Cal at seven different receivers catch balls tonight Vick ward Ned four for forty seven layered four for thirty eight MO ways three for forty to sixty in budding free for twenty six but that interception by. Mcelwain. We talked about that that's his eighth of the year. And that's that's been a real weak spot for him because he's tremendous all around athlete, and I think he's actually better running the football. And he is throwing it. But when you throw that many picks in relation to your touched as he's what he's had two touchdowns to eight interceptions. And you're not you're never going to have a QBR that's worth talking about. When you have that kind of ratio. Now, we've been hearing about Gardner men's as a bona fide Heisman Trophy candidate. And you know, we can say, hey, I'm a pedestrian three thirty four through the air tonight thirty five fifty one. But look at the way, they did it eleven different players balls for Washington state James Williams had ten catches for fifty nine east of Winston seven for ninety two including a touchdown. But he eleven different players caught balls. That's really spreading it around. And it's been suggested that maybe they should send out a mustache. To the Heisman Trophy voters. You remember when Ryan leaf was there they sent out a leaf to the Heisman Trophy voters. And and leaf was on the Pac twelve network has a guest last week. And he said they should send out a miniature mustache to the Heisman Trophy voters. And see if they get the message, well, Mike, Mike Leach thinks yeah, he's got to do that. And just defensively for Cal. Could I can waiver of led the charge making tackles all season long tonight each had nine tackles and seven of them were sold over both of them in Kanawha. She had the bears loan sack. So the interception, of course, went to waiver. So those to continue to play just outstanding football for Cal. The inside linebackers spots a Washington state Payton polar ten tackles five solo one and a half tackles for loss. He he was a dominant player too. And by the way, I think they said Steve polar played for Washington state. He play. Paid for Washington. He was a quarterback. They talk about the poor family. He played for the university of Washington because I covered him. They also mentioned my relationship with Keith Jackson on the air. And right. He's an I actually covered lower. So it's funny. How that all ties together? Kevin we're going to break again. Stay with this. We know it's late, but we got that extra hour sleep football post game show nine to thirteen the Cougars wanted tonight..

"Joining us now to tailgate show us that coach Justin Wilcox bears coming off a forty nine seven victory over Oregon state last week this week the face the team that is leading the north division the Washington huskies before we talk about Washington's talk about what a win like last week does for your ball club. Did you feel a little extra pep in the step this week? So to speak in practice. Yeah. No doubt in our guys have practice really hard throughout the entire season. But once you are able to get a win. I think the Mondays, you know, just it's it's better all throughout the building. And the guys did a good job of battling through some tough times. And and played well and played pretty clean. And we just gotta continue to build on that had nice balance between Patrick layered running the football. And also chase garbage. Throwing it spread it around a little bit. An interesting stat. I was looking up this week is that your two quarterbacks Brandon mcelwain. Chase garber. Patrick layer have accounted for almost ninety percent of the rushing. Attempts in this season going into the year. Did you envision that? Or do you maybe a little more variety there? Well, we knew kind of spring and fall camp that in order for us to move the ball. Obviously Pat was going to be part of that. And then incorporating some quarterback runs and enable to kind of loosen up the defense with some of the threat of the QB runs. And we knew we knew both those guys have the ability to do that. And that's kind of how our team is of all offensively. It's that's what's best for us in terms of where we're at offensively used to have that extra element. And we got to continue to grow there. And you know, some of the things we're doing well on the run pass option game has has helped us, and we got to continue to evolve in the run pass option. But also the downfield passing the bears leading the conference in rushing per game. Almost two hundred yards per game that hasn't happened here for a long time. It's good to see. Conversely, your teams also number one in the league defensively against the pass. So both of those areas will be challenged today by a Washington team that I think if you're going to pick one word that describes. Is that they're balanced because defensively they're balanced. It offensively the pass in the on their ballots, and that makes a more intriguing challenge doesn't it? Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, they're excellent football team and have really done some good things here in the last few years. And we know they're going to be ready to play. They're they're very very talented in every phase offense defense and on special teams, and we're gonna have to play really well, and our guys know our guys know that it'll be it'll be a battle. We're going to have to know play through some momentum swings. And that's how these type of games go. But I know our guys are excited for the challenge. Talk about chase Garber good ball game last week, obviously his improvement in that game. And are getting another chance this week against Washington. Yeah. I think it's just continuing to get better with every rep and chases developing player, but he made good decisions still had a few throws and a couple run RPO's that he could have played a little bit better. But I think he's just getting better and better and more comfortable in the offense and operated. Well last week and. He's got a really bright future. And I also thought Brennan mcelwain did a really nice job coming in and giving us a change of pace. So both those guys are getting better, and they're developing and and really excited about where they're headed as always one of the keys this week in particular against Washington leads the line of scrimmage because they're big on both sides of the line of scrimmage. They did lose their or one of their star offensive tackles trae Adams back injury. And fall camp has not played. He was an all American. So they switched some guys around there. But defensively I mean, they're really stout upfront. They can play with just four guys. They don't have to worry about bringing five or six guys in the pass rush. Because they've got enough guy said that are strong enough fast enough and capable enough. Putting pressure on you just put the four. Yeah. I think it starts up front on defense for them. I mean, they're they're very good in the secondary and at linebacker, but the the guys up front. Do a really good job and people have a hard time blocking. And it'll be a challenge for us. And we're going to have to get some hard yards in the run game. We're going to have to pass protect really well. Because as you mentioned there, they have done a nice job of getting pressure with just four guys. And we're gonna have to be really tight with our technique and our rules and pass protection. And then in the run game. Like, a mention we're going to have to grind it out and find some tough yards in there. All right at the end of the day. What are the keys you feel the bears have to do to win this one? Well, it's no different than any other week. We're going to have to take care of the ball on offense. Find a way to convert on third downs and move the ball down the field, and it's going to be tough. And we're going to like I said before play through some momentum swings. Our guys are coming up our cleanest game on offense and defensively. Think it's line of scrimmage in the run game. And then defending the shots down the field and not giving them explosive plays and trying to make 'em earn everything. They get got to find a way to make the quarterback uncomfortable at times and obvious passage relations and get off the. Field on third downs. And I also think special teams are going to have a huge impact on this game with the field position covering punts and kicks and then getting some hidden yardage in the return. All right. Good luck in the ball game. And we'll talk afterwards. Thanks a lot. Go bears. Head coach just a Wilcox bears. Get ready to face the Washington. Huskies. I'm Legros Cup. And this is your cow Washington series flashback Seattle, Washington two thousand to everyone was talking about nineteen seventy six why? Because that was the last year Cal had beaten Washington in football. Under new head coach Jeff Tedford quarterback. Kyle fuller. Threw five touchdown passes with no interceptions to help cow build an early lead. Then the defense takeover holding off a late second half rally. Final score Cal thirty four Washington. Twenty-seven fans who followed Cal to the Pacific northwest still talk about the excitement they felt when bowler lined up in the victory formation with just seconds remaining twenty-six years was along time. But it was worth the wait. I'm the gross Cup, and this has been your cow Washington series. Full lash Bryant Washburn Washburn Washburn. He brings a he's. A message from the king..

"In good hands subject to terms, conditions and availability? Football. Oh, eight ten. They've had a chance to score from the one and didn't. And now they have a first and ten at the thirty time to throw down the right sideline opener. Touchdown at the layered. Patrick, great down the right side. Simply freaked out. Garber hit him in pole sprite twenty nine yard touchdown path. Replays, forty yards. Three plays. One twelve off the clock bears took advantage of a great field position. And so with six fifty nine left Cal led fourteen zero and I really liked that player was a real route. Cleared it out inside and learned went up the right sideline perfectly thrown by Garber. Who? Hell I think this was his best day as a Cal starter. I really liked the way he played today. That was his second of three touchdown passes scupper. And let's let's go over the side. So I think we briefly gave covers seventeen of twenty six two hundred thirty four yards. Three touchdowns the rating of one seventy nine point one. Yeah. That's that's a good QBR. Yes. I was originally known as passing efficiency and it's based on four things yards percentage touchdowns interceptions. So he had three touchdowns two zero interceptions. That's the most important part of that equation. And one seventy nine point one is a very good QBR quarterback. Rodney I think they will take. I will I'll take it for those of might not be regular Cal fans. And we talk so often about how important turnovers are after starting free and Cal the last three weeks is committed fourteen turnovers and today. Plus one dramatic reversal from the last three loss and better at minimizing the penalties two weeks ago. I mean that that game in Arizona was the worst thirteen penalties in that game today. Cal had four penalties for fifty yards which is not too bad at last week only threes, so they've really done a good job of concern, though, is the targeting thing they'll cover this is three and two weeks for the bears. One appear to be pretty iffy for sure, but boy, those are costly guys misses a half. If you go out in the second half you've missed the first half next week. Yeah. And you can't afford to be losing key players when you come into the teeth of your schedule you play a team like Washington you want every single player all especially all your starters available. All right. Let's continue our statistical breakdown here. Patrick glared the second highest rushing day of his career twenty two carries hundred ninety three yards. Two touchdowns rushing. And a long run a fifty three on the day, the eight point eight yard average per carry it, we'll take and Todd mckim pointed out his best was also against Oregon state that was last year. Chris Brown got more of a chance today. Six carries twenty-seven yards in his first touchdown Brandon mcelwain. I remember one especially a very important play to pick up a first down four carries for twenty seven yards in his limited duty and receiving wise. Cal continues to spread the ball around seven different receivers today they coordinated five catches for eighty yards county by Noah five for seventy three including a touchdown Patrick layered. Three catches for forty eight one touchdown and ways Hawkins Brown. Mcmorris one. Touchdown a piece, and of course, McMurray a one catch apiece and McMorris was a touchdown catch. Yeah. I liked that spread the wealth offense. Especially with the passing game. Oregon say there are regular QB Connor blunt to six hundred thirteen forty two yards. One interception. The first app before he. He was knocked down. So he wasn't very effective then Jack Cleto did better after coming off the bench eleven of twenty one hundred four yards one interception. Arteta's Pierce thirteen carries for forty four yards to lead. The babes our top rusher. Jefferson. Just two carries for thirty four yards. I think back to the notes we had from Justin Wilcox coming into this game. He said one very important thing for Cal today was to get the beavers in the more obvious past situations and with the early success opening and the lead the bears really did that and it paid big dividends. Yeah. If you can slam the run and forced the quarterback into obvious past situations. It really helps and it takes away the play play action threat. All right for Oregon state. Davis Pierce running back was their top receiver with lied catches for seventy two. Let's look at the overall team stats now. Bears with a big inch five hundred thirty nine total yards to forty one four Oregon state passing. It was a two thirty four to one forty six advantage rushing. A huge advantage for the bears three hundred five yards rushing. That's our best day in a while two ninety five for the government. And the pedal is only four today. First downs cower they twenty seven to eighteen advantage yards per play. Whoa. Cal seven point eight yards to three point three for the beeps Oregon said actually ran five more plays seventy four to sixty nine and the time of possession. The beavers had the advantage. There are thirty one forty one to twenty eight nineteen as we said turnovers cow with a two one advantage plus one there and sack seven for the bears today. Let's spend a moment on that. That's a season and the beavers had just one came late for Cal. Evan Weaver at one and a half to lead the way trade Turner had one Jordan could I heaven, Paul Luke Becca Chris polar and Dion. White credited ward one half a sack and Turner ten tackles on the eighth solo. Another so-so for him ten tackles six solo. He seems to be a double digits almost every week. Evan weaver. Add ten was six solos and Mike Polaski mentioned Kevin Paul six tackles for Indy. Five solo and two point five tackles for loss. So those highlights some of the defensive numbers cover. I liked the sound of all those stats I especially life when you were talking about the rushing yards. Cal three zero five to ninety five that's at three to one advantage in rushing, and if you can run and stop the run and beyond the plus side of turnovers and sacks and big plays. You're probably gonna win about eighty five ninety percent of the time so good good numbers. All the way around today for Cal. All right. The bears win at my final forty nine to seven over Oregon state. Just a moment. This is Cal football from learfield kings.

"Shocker breach. Jones OSU hall of Famer Steve Preece is to my left and she looked at on the field. Steve Preece, you see a huge retro value logo at the fifty yard line. That's a peculiar figure right there. You know? That's when you were recruited you here, you always got shirts like that. I've got sweatshirt shirts and everything else. And you know, we used to wear those little sailor hats every once in a while too. I wanna see where one of those sailor. I think you'd look cute. I have a basketball head so. So here we are all by week in oh back. Cal had to play last week at the Rose Bowl against UCLA and got spanked thirty-seven two seven five turnovers. Yeah, they have just been turn the ball over on a record pace and Justin Wilcox and the bears. Gotta get that turned around. And that that's been something they've been really dealing with this week in the media down the bay area's, well, the beams have just the opposite. They can't get any turnovers and you look at these two teams. And I think this game you're going to know what happens by reading the turnovers at the end of the game and the Oregon state needs to somehow create them. They've got us in pressure. You got a mobile quarterbacks that makes it a little bit harder to send the pressure. But I think the beavers have to do it. This is a team that they can do some. They didn't get turnovers with they can put pressure on mcelwain. He's got seven. I n already. Touchdown. That's a real bad ratio. But he does run the football. So you know, when you're rushing the passer, you gotta stay in the lanes are supposed to stay in. And then you can do well against this guy. What you think about rushing the passer, and that's been an issue this season for the Oregon state defense. What do you expect today against a group of Cal quarterbacks that Patrick layered? She Brandon mcelwain chase Garber Ross Bowers. Have all had starts in the first six games for Cal. I expect a little more of the bees based three-man line. We've been playing at Oregon state a ton of nickel with two defensive linemen and two linebackers on the end. I don't think we'll see that as much when you've got a quarterback that runs as well as mcelwain. And Pat Patrick layer back there who's an outstanding runner but two hundred and fourteen on the beams last year you remember that run out embarrassing for Oregon state's defense. And I think you're gonna you're gonna have to play the. Three-man line. They're going to have to put pressure on run blitz. A lot make them throw. Because where they throw that's where the the turnovers come. The defensive line has wanted to see Jeremy Reich ner all season long for Oregon state. Is there a chance number ninety one will play today? Yes. There is. He is he is going to suit up for sure. And I don't quite frankly, I don't think people suit up unless they're gonna play. Now, I would expect that means him playing. Twelve to fifteen place. I think they'd be selected plays. I he's a really good pass rush guy. So I expect maybe a third dowry isn't going to have his leg chopped out in all that Malay in the middle of the line on runs. So I expect to see a little more of those situations for him, but I do expect him to play. And he's a big thing for the beavers. No doubt about it. And of course, the intangibles of homecoming, the the emotion the crowd will be into the hall of fame folks will be here. How does that add to the positive vibes for the home team? I think it adds a lot. And I I go back to what we talked about about just the way that Jonathan Smith is organized this team and the way they practice at practice this week on Tuesday. You would have never known that. This was a one in five team. I mean, I was surprised they look like they they could have been five and one they were flying around. They were you know. Laughing and having a good time and practicing they've they've got many interceptions. So they were all on the jugs machine. I mean coach got these guys at about twelve yards. Just take it bullets to the face. And they were all having all linebackers were Africa cats like five in a row or something. And I'm afraid if I would have been doing that that day of might have taken a whole practice anyway. But they they were working hard. They were acting like again like this is going to play to win the Ron count along with OSU hall of Famer Steve Preece, we'll take a break. We'll go on campus. The men's soccer team turning heads nationally by knocking off number ten Stanford. That'll be our on campus report as we continue on the beaver tailgate show on the beaver sports network from learfield course,.

"Count. There's football on caging. Got tight ends all over the place on the left side of the line. They got another one on the right side. Running play. Uncalled for the cutout. Fell on file, but he's got to be an academy. That is. All right. That was Joshua Kelly's third touchdown of the game. And he only had one last year. So it's a pretty good day for him. Well, he was he was doing well coming into this game. He's got a good season. And yeah, that's the thing. And again, the bears did not play. Well, let's start. Different type of picture, but UCLA did not look like an Owen five football team this freshman quarterback. He really showed a lot tonight sun for twelve passing in the first half Dorian. Thompson Robinson, very highly regarded out of Las Vegas and in the second half. He didn't throw much, but he he ran effectively roller is total numbers on the day. Right. Well, let's let's have a look at some stats here. Thompson Robinson thirteen of fifteen through the air. That's pretty good hundred and forty one yards one sixty five point six rating. Yeah, that's that's excellent. He also read it nine times for twenty seven yards with a long of twenty. So that that's a pretty good start to the Bruins offense. Josh Kelly Kerry side, he worked hard one hundred fifty seven yards three touchdowns. That's a five point two yard average. So that was a great. That was a great one two punch for that day. Yeah. Now for California. Brandon mcelwain finished twenty two forty and for the the numbers, obviously are not pretty couple of interceptions. Patrick Laird was one for one second. Completion of the hair Laird also rushed seventeen times for ninety four yards and the touchdown. Chris Brown also carries for twenty one mcelwain was limited on the ground. And I didn't have a chance to run too much eight carries for twelve yards. Vic Wharton was it bear stop receiver with five catches. But for only thirty five yards. Jeremy Hawkins, Jeremiah Hawkins. Four catches for forty nine. Patrick leered four for thirteen Chotobhai. No, boy are mostly all early as I recall three for twenty-five bunny at two for twenty made a terrible mistake in the second quarter. When he didn't go out of Bosnia is right next to the sidelines. All he had to do with step out and that would have stopped the clock given callous shot at a scoring. You know, we see it. We see it in the pros. So I it's kind of hard to get on college kids. But you'd like to think when you're down in the last thirty seconds of the half that would be somewhat. Automatic. But it didn't happen and you're a yard from the sideline and instead of going out of bounds. You come back inside and chew clock instead of stopping the clock. Well, what a coulda shoulda that. That didn't help as Cal Mr. chess. You get on the board at the end of the first half. But they lose it by a final score tonight of thirty seven to seven to the UCLA Bruins much more to come on. The Cal football postgame show in just a moment. This Cal football from learfield. Cal fans, make Clermont.

"Brandon mcelwain went twenty five yards for a touchdown and get the mayor's close to ten seven. Shirley, the average score. Again, the boot Callen fraud separate full disclosure to the mistake-filled night. And I just obviously missed the name there. But I flinched before we came back. So I kind of got a false start there. It's just what's what's in the air tonight. There's something in the air. But that was a pretty impressive drive. Seventy five yards. Seven plays to forty seven off the clock. So with fourteen o two left in the second quarter. Cal was down ten to seven, and they eventually took the lead, and they were leading at halftime as you said. Well, it's time to take a look at these statistics in his Justin Wilcox suggested Cal heavy advantage in well just about all of them except turnovers. Let's take a award total yardage this. This is really eye-opening. Cal four seventy six Arizona. Two hundred sixty five out gained more than two hundred yards almost two to one passing yardage three fifteen to one forty one. The advantage for Cal rushing. One sixty one to one twenty four for Cal the next door on this dad pages penalties in cal-. Well, they didn't dominate but they had a big advantage. Thirteen fouls for one hundred fifteen yards. Arizona wasn't terribly clean themselves. Ten seventy two. But as you said a total of twenty three penalties in the game combined, but thirteen that'll better work against him. And so many were were illegal were were procedure penalties fall starts. It was just. A bad night not category. Just not a not a fun game to watch. Like, I say being a former quarterback who really cared a lot about offensive execution to see this. It was very frustrating to watch. And it's very true for all. Cal fans. Yeah. Back to the stat page. I doubt cow twenty-five to thirteen virtually a two to one advantage. Downscale of fifteen. That's good. Arizona. Five of fifteen total plays caliber advantage there. Seventy seven to fifty nine yards per play. Cows six point two Arizona, four point five. Average yards per completion nine point eight for the bears nine point four Zona practically even their yards per rush. Cal four seven Zona three six hells rushing defense. Really the bigger job the top to Arizona backstabbers just a shade under six yards per carry. And they really held them and Chuck Taylor. Seventy three yards and fifteen. Right. Well, seven for twenty six forty and eight cares. You know that wasn't the problem stopping there on time of possession. Kalgoorlie thirty five minutes and thirty four forty six to twenty five fourteen rare zodda each team lost a fumble Olert Zola lost one out of five. And that on the the scoop and score. After the interception return the bounce. Absolutely bizarre. Just took a completely lateral bounce. No end over end right to the guy. Learn who ran for them. Well that'll happen sacks one for Cal. And that was the first of the season tonight for psalms and two for the Wildcats philosophers to for California. So the the tail that shape all for Cal except for the turnovers individually, we mentioned some of the Russian Dole's fares. Odeh Tate fifteen of twenty five the one hundred forty one yards. One TD and one interception. Of course picked for the bears was by Cam bottom third of his career for Cal mcelwain except for those interceptions scuppers impressive stat line. Although as yet a great night take away those three picks and you look at his numbers thirty two out of forty three three hundred fifteen yards and if zero touchdowns three interceptions. You took take at the other way ahead. Three touchdowns. Zero interceptions. His QBR would have been about three hundred something as it was. He had a QBR of one twenty two which is very mediocre mcelwain for the second straight game over a hundred yards rushing. A last week it became the first Cal quarterback do bass essentially Mark since Joe Kapp in nineteen fifty eight hundred seventy odds in twenty carries. Two of them for touchdowns accounted for more than four hundred yards of combined total offense passing and running. That's that's pretty exceptional. The only other Cal player to carry the ball and all his Patrick cleared. Fourteen carries for fifty four MO ways and Patrick lured each caught eight passes tonight ways for ninety seven yards along a forty one layer gut eight for thirty four yards Vic warden and in budding each got four codified, Noah and Jordan Dunkin each caught three this evening. So they spread. Editor around pretty well, Bryan was wildcat stopper saver. Four catches for thirty eight yards at Elson had the three catches for forty one. Including the first touchdown of the game. Six receivers catching goals for the Wildcats. So that's a look at the statistical breakdown defensively Jordan kadarshian continues. Just excel in so many ways for Cal eleven tackles ws again ten solo also had a forced fumble Ashton. Davis was next with six tackles five solo broke up a pass as well. Even waiver who'd been double digits every game I held down to three tonight. Yeah. I would say Kanachak is already made my all conference team. I like to ever since he got on the field last year. He just attended to turn ED's all the time. Well, that's the recap of the stats. We'll have at the scoreboard next again. It's Arizona twenty four California's seventeen. This is Cal football from learfield. It is.

"Advancing therapeutics improving lives, Mike. What are the third quarter staffs are really interested in Cal three hundred forty nine Aristander just one ninety five but that interception. Just changes turnovers change everything. When you give up a possession like that. And then a possession with a score member. Arizona had RCB Oregon have on last week as well. And that's what changed the game in the Oregon Stanford game as well. The big interception for a touchdown. Or the scoop and score is a huge difference maker in a game. Like this especially it's been so close all the way along. Bears. Have a considerable edge on possession time are only ten minutes ahead of Arizona, even possession time. It's a bizarre game. But the bears are trailing. And that's the way it goes. But they are in the offensive zone right now. Fourth quarter fairly seventeen to fourteen. Now, they go from our left or right. They've got the ball down at the twenty three yard line. They don't want to just try a field goal in the backfield. And now there is a change of quarterback right now Garber is in there. They give it a layered Lehrer tries to Goethe's. Let me get to the twenty yard line trying to get the first down. He fell forward a little bit at the twenty. But I still think he's a little short. He is he's about a yard short of the first down tackle made by schooler who we've talked about all night long map away. Now if back in a quarterback, so I guess he did have to sit out the play because his helmet came up. I thought the quarter break would negate that. But apparently, not it's like the targeting role you have to miss your game, regardless. Our this a big play. Third down in the yard at the twenty one mcelwain kind of try to do it himself. And now not again, another Cal penalty Bondar, leave -able. This drives coaches fans and broadcasters crazy. Gonna. False start offense. Five yard penalty. Phil third-down Valentino del tosa. And as you watch the replay on TV it actually looked like he got off on the snap. But he was the only one that got off on. Okay. And I think I'm serious that I think that's what it made him look, so gipper like it was popcorn. He was looking at everybody did get right on the snap. But he moved quicker than everybody else. Now, they need five yards for the first out. Bath the left sideline. They got a good cut down the left sideline by Warton. They gave him more space than you would think and it was Leandra sooner chased him out of bounds. But the bears get the all important I down now and again on that play is thirteen yards. Now they're in the red zone. And they're inside the fifteen. So twenty three for thirty for Brandon mcelwain tonight and outside of the weather -ception. He is having a heck of a game. No is the only re- Dr two receivers out to the right now is one of them. Paco anthro should have been intercepted. And it was tipped off the hands of.

"Rather dischord consecutive touchdowns both via the running ability of Brandon mcelwain and lead. The Wildcats at the break. Fourteen to ten joining us now is athlete director. Jim knowlton? We were talking off air here that we got a lot to talk about here next week at homecoming and all kinds of things I'll let you run down the list of everything that's going on next week. Well, the good news is my heart rate is just gone down. After that first half. I was doing the potato at at the beginning of that throughout the whole hab. But yeah, great week coming up its national championship week. So we're going to celebrate, you know, our national champions which include women's rowing. Varsity sport varsity, eight quotes, Kathy Baker with a two hundred yard back national championship. We just found out our type UCLA be four o'clock. Which is fantastic as a top coming week. We just made the decision to add another concert before the game against UCLA. We'll we'll be doing a release on Monday, which we'll certainly get people excited. And you know, if you haven't seen or heard everyone needs to come to Maxwell field, just see the celebrations and the excitement that's going on, you know, before the games. Yeah. Last week we had petty theft. I've seen him before that there a good act. And so we got two more concerts before the end of the season. Also, it's the Joe Roth memorial game. Of course, the great quarterback that passed away way too early after completing his career, California. So that's always big when the bears are playing either UCLA or USC at home, we really like the four o'clock start too because you get a morning, and you can get home before midnight. So that's pretty good as well. And then the seaboard award, and that's that's a huge honoring this year. It goes to Burl Toler junior who played for the bears his sons on the staff a borough. I told her the third is is really good as far as recruiting is concerned on a great job with the running backs. And then you've got other things going up on campus. In addition to football, don't you got some of the Olympic sports in action. Now, it's great. We've got all of our fall sports are going as as you know, men's and women's basketball started practicing. So it's hard to believe but basketball season upon us as well. And so between the exhibition for the men's team on thirty October. You know, a trip to Shanghai to play Yale. I will be going on the second of November there for the better part of seven eight days. And then the women on November first half their exhibition at their their their home opener on November six so it's gonna be exciting. The energy continues to build that. Certainly this game tonight is an exciting one. And our fans are probably at the on the edge of their seats. Just like we are here at the stadium. Well, hopefully, their heart rates went down a little bit too at the half as well. So probably weather good second half come away with a win and be to go on the road coming on next week to host the Bruins of UCLA for homecoming. Jim as always thanks for stopping by good like here in the second half. I dot thanks a lot. You gotta Jim Knowlton. The directorate Cal bears leading near his own a Wildcats at the break. "That build up the altitude overruled, the atmospherics, okay? All right. So the bears on offense further by score of seven to nothing. And remember next week. You want to be around because UCLA comes down. Show up in Berkeley for that one. All right now. The starting quarterback tonight is Brandon mcelwain. For something. They cut pretty quiet, but they told us before the game be aware that he might start the game. And he is he's out there right now work goes in motion out to the right? And we have some Patrick glared may be moved early on that wants somebody moved early instant penalty number two. They're calling it on Jordan dunk, Jordan Dunkin on the outside throw the bears start out immediately. I in fifteen instead of first that'll be one thing to mcelwain. He's been playing. But when you get new quarterback in the game starting off cadence is going to be a little different his time. He's gonna be a little bit different. So guys have to pay special attention and receivers should be looking at the ball for the stamp, anyway, it's I and fifteen. Now it goes in motion mcelwain running to his right Perry. The ball fake and a hand on the a significant law loss the play by schooler name. We're going to call all night. Helen Diller makes the stop Cullen schooler is an absolute stud on this defense. The guy can just play over the few. We talked about it had sixteen tap of the season opener vs BYU, and he's second in the Pac twelve with fifty seven right now for the bears are already at the second and nineteen on their first drive of the game are back just outside the sixteen yard line wants to throw he throws underneath. And while it is caught up the twenty one yard line of a lot of yardage on the play Antony wall was caught by wanting in tackled again by schooler. Now the bears have a very long yardage play. They are only at their own twenty two yard line here going for our right to our left. Third down as an offensive coordinator. It's tough to find that play in the playbook ended up in third along, especially on the road. You have to stay on schedule with change Mathura quarterback. Larry has left to receivers three receivers out to the right one to the left side. Mcelwain throws. Oh, what a catch and a miracle catching a lot of ways. Because I thought for sure Flanagan bowls was going to step right in front of that ball and grab it. I'm amazed. He couldn't grab it for the interception. Jordan Dunkin makes the catch that was a close call. But it turns into a big fifteen yard game. A great ball to get that outside throwing into zone coverage cities receiver down to make the catch. I in ten thirty eight yard line for the bears and a path over the middle that might have worked beautifully the fake work. Good the defense bought it. But then mcelwain through a too high for the intended receiver on the play. And so it didn't go to bunting who had to tell you how high the path had to be funding. Six seven six seven Tim came up and made a big hit. You cannot lead your receivers into punishment like that and have you selected as a big cat. But at a tight end going across the middle. You gotta get that ball down into the ribcage and stick it on. And if they did they had a good seventy yard play. And maybe bigger because you hit him ten love and bounced off Tim half the coverage. Now Matha went trying to carry the ball. And what almost looked like a broken play? And.

"Very much in favor of of Oregon. Three two one in that category. And if you're plus two you're going to win most of the time if you're plus three you will when Michalowski ask what the number said, you'd have an answer eighty five percents. Yeah. Yeah. And George Allen used to say that if you turn the ball over three times, I will beat you every time. And George new George nearly football. He did Mike and Joe were by the way. Congratulations to Joe stork has five hundred broadcast tonight a remarkable number. It is it's incredible. I'm really glad to have been a friend and colleague with Joe since one thousand nine hundred eighty three when we first got together on the old Oakland invaders. That's right. We I work together. And then teamed up on Cal football in one thousand nine hundred eighty six which was Joe caps last year and worked off and on until two thousand and three at our last game. Together was the insight bowl when Cal upset. Virginia Tech, one of the most thrilling games we ever covered. And it was a game where Aaron Rodgers really came of age in that game, and it showed the country that this was a future star. Yeah. And he went on to be not only as good as people thought, he might even better. He's been incredible. He's pretty good. Anyway, Joe and Mike we're talking about the UCLA Zona game era Zona is cows next opponent and the Trojans were up twenty four to seven they hang on to win that one out Tucson twenty four to twenty. So as as Joe suggested the Pac twelve we're not quite sure what's going on here there. There have been some surprising results early in the season. Very strange ear in the Pac twelve and it's really hard to get a handle on what's going to happen week-to-week. But we do know that Cal will play Arizona at Tucson. And we know it will be a night game because all the games zone are night games. And then after that we have UCLA for homecoming. And we don't have a clue as to the kickoff time for that. But we hope you don't need to know. We're going to need to know. No that after after tonight's game, you have three three games. That are winnable. Arizona UCLA and Oregon state are winnable games. I'm not saying the Cal will win. But on paper, those are winnable games. And if you could find a way to win all three of them and become bowl eligible by week eight. I would be wonderful. Yeah. You'd you'd be grumpy. That's right. I I'm not in a good mood right now. I should warn our audience about that Iran's me we got the coach let's throw it back upstairs. Joe Starkey Mike Polaski and have their visit with Justin Wilcox guys. Okay. Welcome back memorial stadium. In Berkeley, a tough night for Cal and turnovers were a big part of the problem. The barrett. This is a very competitive game. Except for certainly a real blow at the end of the first half on a turnover, so coaches, we talk to you about the game. And the big picture overall analysis, you gotta give Oregon credit to really really good team. But for us. I mean defensively it was explosive plays and third downs. We shot ourselves in the foot too many times against the talented team. When the when the margins for error, just so small and offensively. We've moved the ball at times we just we had a lot of opportunities for shots for some big plays. And. We didn't take advantage of those. And then the turnovers I mean the turnovers. Were critical and can have it. So to beat it BT Mike that we got to play cleaner. Make better decisions is just now they have something to do with that. Because they got really good players, and it's just the margin for error shrink. But that's what it was. And we gotta we gotta go back to work and improving. Are we can do some things as a team and these guys are playing hard together? We just gotta we gotta keep working at it. Yeah. There's no doubt. That's a good football team. He played tonight. I as I watched them and haven't been around the game for a long time. I said that the top fifteen teams. There's no doubt about it. They're talented kind of all across the board. Great offense. Good defense. Their solution was to Canada when when Brandon was in the game pack the box. Bring extra pressure spy somebody on him. And you were talking about it when they do that you have to take your shots. Right. You have to be able to stretch the field. Yeah. So you have to take advantage. What what was going on with it miscues with a quarterback, experienced not reading it? What was it? Oh, there's going to be a variety of things. I don't think it was one thing. But when you know when he was in the game, you know, if they're gonna play with coverage, then you got numbers in the run game because he can he can do some things on the run game. And then if you're gonna play zero which they did quite a few times, you gotta make them pay over the top. And we had our chances to do that. And we just didn't capitalize on them. And, you know, not only Brandon but chase we had had some chances air and those guys learn from it, and it stinks right now. Because you know, we had those opportunities, and we didn't take advantage of them, and we have to do that. And again, the margin for error is really really small when you play a team like that was that basically the the whole assumption behind the basically the change of quarterback. I mean mcelwain played most of the second half and kind of took over in that role be just the ducks too much any other way, you had to have somebody that could get away a little bit. Well, I think you see when a guy. Is that dynamic with the ball in his hands? What that does the defense if you to stand back there, and you know? Trying to protect against their their rushers or you're trying to just be guys one on one with or they got helping coverage. It's just makes it for a much more difficult day, and he gave us the best opportunity because it kind of force their hand and how they wanna play him whether they want to get into zero coverage, and you know, we have some opportunity to throw the ball. And if they want to play some more coverage than we can run the ball. So it just gave us some advantages. And we thought that was our best opportunity. Now, that's not a bright note, you know, rushing for two hundred and forty one yards. That's a pretty good night on the ground. Yeah. Yeah. We ran we moved the ball. We just didn't take advantage in the red zone. A couple of times. And then we turned it over. I mean, the the turnovers and especially the touchdowns. Let me give them fourteen points. It's gonna be really really difficult to be the team like that. I know you've talked a little bit about penalties. You've really been hurt by penalties early in the year. Even though he had you were winning you were giving away yardage because you get some big runs than they would disappear. And there was from penalty certainly issues with some penalties tonight. Yeah. I mean, we there was a couple of third downs. I think we ended up with what is it right here. Three penalties for twenty five four for thirty four for thirty. Okay. Well, you got a different one. I got. But. Yeah. So it was the third downs on defense. You know, you had to wear. Encroachment one's a young guy that you'll eager and then second one we're bringing a pressure and the guy got antsy, and you gotta play smarter than third down against this team. You have to get him off the field. They're just not too many weapons. And when you have an opportunity to get off on third down. You know, you don't get a lot of second chances. And so if you get a penalty, obviously gets the drive keeps going, and and it gets more and more difficult. So given that last week, Oregon, you know, you watch the game film. They got Stanford get the scoop and score against Oregon right right before half. What went through your mind? When when they got that hit in the scoop and score here right before half. It was a bad play. We gotta bounce back from it. And that's what was going through my mind. I mean, you know, we had right there. We we just got a big punt return. We were moving the ball on offense. We're one play away from making that a really tight game going into half. And it goes the other way for seven, and that's that's hard to bounce back from nobody ever. Nobody quit. We kept playing, you know, the first play the second half we missed tackles and they get along run. Which is you know, can't have it not against you saw the speed. I mean, Oregon has excellent speed. And and we can't you know, you gotta be gotta be better than that. And so I thought that swing was huge in. You said about we talk about all the time. He got to protect the football make good decisions and. We didn't. And that's what causes have you had a chance to look at Arizona film. You know? Okay. So you guys start that this week? Yeah. Well, if you didn't hear it they lost tonight to USC twenty four fourteen. I believe it was got it. Okay. Well, I know it's tough night for you. Is this certainly last thing you want to have happened, but the long season ahead. And so you're three and one everything's still bright and shiny head of you. Yeah. We'll go back to work. I mean, you gotta learn from it. And we have some things that we can do as a team. And we just got we still have a ways to go. But I really love our team. We love the way they play together. We we gotta be better. And so that's what we'll start working on on Monday. All right coach. Thanks. Thanks. Okay. We're gonna take a break here. What are we doing? Oh, okay. Well, we're we're we may be talking to Brandon mcelwain. I guess they're trying to track down for us. We should mention that stat. If you didn't hear it earlier. It's the first time that a quarterback for Cal has run for over one hundred yards in a game since Joe Kapp. Amir. Sixty years ago. In the same game sixty years ago against Oregon nineteen fifty eight oh pretty amazing statistic there and saw the bears obviously, Mike have some things to do. I think I think when you and I both talked in the pre-game about we don't know what Cal has based on three. And I was really still trying to figure out what this team's about. I think now we got a better handle on what where they are what they need to do and what they can do. Well at the moment. Key, Mike, Oregon very talented team. You know, big up front all those things and you understand that that's quality football team. Like, I said, I think there are probably a top fifteen the country team. I think they fit in that gap very easily. And so, you know, when you go up against quality opponents like that you have to be on your game and coach Wilcox. I think said it perfectly. You can't give them opportunities. You can't present them gifts. And the various did that tonight turnovers. A gift you give that away you're turning over your points. You're offering them points. And so you look at that. That's the difference in the game. It's those turnovers four it's the turnover. Takeaway ratio is plus four for Oregon plus four possessions over what you get because you're turning the ball over. And that's just makes it really hard for a team to bounce back to win from you really have to be superior physically to be able to give the ball away that way and then come back and win that game. So it's tough to come back from and again you have to execute. When when they present you things on defense like I talked about mcelwain is. Dynamic. I mean, he he's special with his feet, and he can throw the football too. But he creates stretches on deep, and so they have to put an extra man the box. They were gonna blitz. They were gonna spy they were gonna play zero coverage zero coverage means there's no safety. Nobody deep you get that match. You have to be able to take advantage of it. Because you can't let them get away with that you have to you have to make them you have to stretch them in that regard. And if you can't do that, then they can keep packing the boxes start to shutdown that running game. And so one day do something you have to counter, and if you can't counter they're gonna keep doing it. Add that to the turnovers and that there's your final score turnovers are really when you look at the stats. It really is the whole story of the game. For example, a bears finished only sixty yards short of them in total offense bears had four twenty-seven. They had four eighty five the bears had more yardage than they did in in the game. And in various categories, they had more possession time. They had third down. Was great. It was almost fifty over fifty percent on third down. But still turnovers were we're big issue. But let's move on. Because we now have Brandon mcelwain with us who got the most playing time has had so far as a quarterback for the university of California, and Brandon I know you're disappointed in the outcome tonight..

"Is a starter. Brandon mcelwain and hours going. I'm back and forth. The number two spot your take on this game, Oregon going into cow in Oregon a slight favorite. Yeah. The money's coming on Cal. I think Oregon open three I've seen it down. I think to one and a half in some places so the money coming in on the home underdog, and I can understand that a lot of it is probably a negative play towards towards Oregon for Stanford loss last week in the Washington up next CAL's had the the week off to prepare an open coming program. I don't know that there's a great deal of value and taking Cal right now. Plus the points if you're gonna play you get them on the money line. And maybe, you know, even plus one oh five maybe plus one ten you might wanna look that way. If you could have gotten the three plus three, I think that would have been a very nice play. I prefer calendars game. Although I think that if these teams met in about another month argon might be the play because I think Oregon's a team that's going to show improvement in. Mario crystal ball's first year. All right, thirty eight twenty eight again Rams up Minnesota though on a first down in ram territory gaining about six on a sweep play. So four minutes. Fifty five seconds to go. Minnesota in score and territory inside the Rams twenty five yard line. See how it pans out to they get seven and cover the game. Did they get three and push the game, Andy? And that's the intriguing part about this because of its fourth down anything more than perhaps even a half a yard to go. It may even do it at at such a small point because you need to two scores. The question would be let's say they score with three and a half minutes to go. Do they onside kick or do? They kick deep. Normally, you could say, well, we'll kick deepen our defense will hold them. But the defense has really done a good job of holding. The Rams all night. You know Rams could be up by thirteen right now. They made they missed. What is normally a made field goal at the end of this last possession. So it'll be interesting to see how it plays out both from if the Vikings score what's score. Will it be? And then what did they do afterwards, especially if there's more than two and a half to three minutes ago? All right, while we wait for sports X, Michelle to call a couple of minutes, Andy warm war big one up in Seattle. Washington was able to hold off our Zona state last week twenty-seven twenty got the lead up to two touchdowns. But Arizona state's covered thirteen in a row. I think now against Washington BYU goes to Seattle. We saw BYU takeout. Wisconsin. Yeah. I was gonna say, well, Wisconsin. And they played Cal tough loss by a field goal. They also beat up Arizona in the opening game. Expos someone's Wildcats going to catch seventeen and a half anywhere from sixteen and a half to seventeen and a half. It was up to eighteen BYU very physical tea not a fast team. But a team that if they can control clock and keep it within a score, you know, kind of hang in there. I think it could be a close gave it just depends on who's going to dictate temple because of Washington's able to string two scores together in a row, they may be able to open it up on BYU. They could this be why to BYU team clearly playing much better than almost everybody expected them to be playing, and I'm not going to say, it's a flat spot for Washington. But it is a non conference game for the huskies. They're coming off of that win last week. I had Arezzo state. I thought that way too many points. And if I play this game, I'll be on BYU as well. Because again, Washington. Yeah, they're looking forward to more conference games after this one BYU. This is an opportunity to play a power. Our power five say power five of top five team in many people's opinions. Washington notwithstanding the the loss to Auburn to open the season. But the other thing is BYU comes in here knowing that they've already been able to win at Wisconsin. So they'll have some confidence going into husky land. I think it's a lot of points, especially at plus eighteen I prefer to take the points with BYU Dhamma can sue big sack on third and sixth setting Minnesota for a field goal. Four tend to go out there on the pregamEcom celebrity guests line. Yes, that's like a girl. Play the week. It's hit four of the last five weeks including last Friday night. Penn State with a thirty five nothing whitewashing of Illinois in the fourth quarter. Get the cover the twenty seven and a half sports X, Michelle. She never even sweat that game. Didn't even worry about it. Sports X, Michelle. Good to have you feel go. Hold on. Real quick is up in good. So thirty thirty one three forty six to go sitting right on the number the closing number. Some people may have laid six and a half earlier in the week of laid six. And a half you could've taken seven and a half at various points during the week for much of the week over seven. All right, India's Iskoe probably middle d gave me sitting over here. Fatter than a lark. All right sports experts show. What do we have for us? Thirty eight thirty one Rams Vikings in the pool in.

"Walk a little bit better as he gets to center of the field. Psalms a very fine young player for California. Well, that's something to consider psalms is one of the guys you're going to be using at that outside backer spots replace camp. Good Kevin Paul is the other. Both of those guys were on that kick cover. Then so you have to consider that when. One of those guys has to be the start for that spot. You may not want to have them both on the same kick cover you. But boy. Let's hope the bears get healthy also completely in by weekend. That'll solve all their problems. But we hope so. First and ten for Idaho state. They have a loyal group of fans here, but not a lot of them. Probably no more than a couple of hundred sweeping play around the right side gets out to the twenty one yard line. So guess who made the tackle? I'm gonna go with Weaver. You got it. During hitting the ball is James Madison. James Madison junior. We'd have to be James Madison about the there would be a lot down that line. So second down and six just across the twenty yard line closer to the twenty one. And it's got to be a path player that needs to be at this point. But Geller instead decides to run with nobody open and ends up getting two or three yards around the right side. Peres close them down. Is one of the taxes for Cal on that one? Believe me, I know how to three yard game and Ben moose tackle too. Good point. Ben most the freshmen redshirt last year moved from tight end to outside linebacker. They by the way, the athletic director at Washington state game this year for him. Third down at about three. Now, the bears go for a full outlet. For the fourth time today. Order back at nowhere to go led by Kanachak. Berith Adam surrounded probably credit a couple of other guys on that play as well. So it's time with eight fifty to go with the score thirty eight to nine. We'll see if the bears when they get back. We'll even think about throwing a path this point. On time. Kevin Ryan punting again. His type of bodice ten yard line. Navajo states in. No hurry to kick. This one away. Either. They're starting there four o'clock move, and he kicks it from about the eight yard line. And it's the eighth pond today bears. Take it at the fifty and break in lower out to the right side of the twenty five. Could he make it into the end zone? And they got to say. Oh. Yard line at looked like it was going to be a complete run back by Rummy Romeo. But he got knocked out of bounds. Just short wanna look like a big punt return touchdown. They're going to market at the four yard line. Call almost huge return. Gotta no way around that feel good spot by the official forty six yards. I think his left foot stepped out band as he tried to turn the corner. Excellent chargeable that got hurt of follow your block or blocks in that case. And Goodspeed to the edge. Niko romeo. Five ten one. Seventy freshmen out of orange California modern day high school another modern day product, we talked about his history the Philippines, Brandon mcelwain in a quarterback for the bears. Have we got another running back in there as well? Now, we'll figure out that is in just a minute Barrett's first and goal. And credit sweep to the left and now path into the end zone. Touchdown bear. Wow. That scratch mcelwain. Look like he was gonna just run. Then he had an open receiver get handed to them. Hawkin? Touchdown albert. I love that stretch because you cannot be right on defense. If you come up to tackle the ball carrier being the quarterback in that case, then the is going to be wide open. If you've covered the receiver then the quarterback gets to keep it and run influenza himself as a fantastic stretch. First time, I saw was that chip Kelly offense up in Oregon and Mario dramatic. So well that time Naqoura into excellent job of staying alive. Could have been tackled in the backfield. But instead remained passer Broadway Metaxas and made a great way on forty five to nine bear minutes to go four yard or yard touchdown. And so that's another Cal touchdown another thousand dollars the boys and Girls Club of open courtesy of Gilead sciences. We'll take a timeout. Our coverage continues this.

"Calbears football on eighteen down over. Right tackle putdown. Patrick three yard Ron Back? Today Cal football, post game, show Laura's memorial stadium Hal Ramey, the, all America quarterback league gross cop. California twenty four seventeen over North Carolina and the theme of this one Cupper just when you think you know what's all in control, walkout. It got scary. Joe's Turkey says Yikes Yikes And they were Cal was. A seven point favorite in this game and I really thought, it should have been a pick em game based on the records last, year. But Seven point favorite what does, that mean and but when they started out and got a seventeen zero lead I really felt. Like they were dominating the game. And I didn't. See, much to, worry about but I've been around, Cal football, long enough to know that there's always something to worry about I felt. Pretty good at twenty four to three yeah that's yeah better yet later in the game twenty four. Three What are, you gonna, do It's like. Coach Wilcox said they're gonna they're gonna look at tape and they're. Going to great every player they're going to go over every play and they're gonna find out the good. News and the bad news and I think the good news is that they played really strong, defense in the first half and there is. Things about all three quarterbacks That you want to feel good. About there's some things that you don't feel very good about and Mike Polanski's. Evaluation of Ross bars I think was very. Good is that if you're going to be a pack twelve quarterback you've gotta hit you gotta make lapse. Lapse those Dinkins duck passes and. I was lucky I played for a coach. Named cactus Jack Curtis back in the fifties and Curtis said that he had what. He called a ball control passing, offense Bill. Walsh gets credit for that later on but at the time everybody. Was talking about ball controlled by way, of the split t option and cactus Jack talked about a ball. Control that's where a lot of Lincoln dunk passes so I made a lot of layups and, it's it's important to make those throws and You. And you just can't miss him and be a pack twelve quarterbacks I think Mike onto a good theme there and, I think, it can be. Done easy enough because Ross. Bowers is a competitor he's got a good. Work ethic and he does have the, arm strength he has more than. A lot of people realize you know since we're talking quarterbacks Joe made the. Point somewhere the broadcast seen three of them. In their reminiscent of, the forty days when red Hickey brought the shotgun in but we saw three today. And there's that old adage that. Applies more the NFL if you have two. Quarterbacks you don't have any what about using three guys and they all bring something different And just maybe your comments on yeah that will complicate things for BYU or if they continue, with it and selling opponents to get those three quarterbacks were waters tittle and Brody. And cars tiddle came over, to the giants shortly. After that got started that put me back on the bench So maybe you're the wrong guy ask about that I'm not I wasn't really thrilled, with that but it was nice having why is a teammate along with. Charlie Connelly and so I was playing third string behind a couple. Of legends why isn't the hall of? Fame Charlie I, don't recall, but yeah those are, good quarterbacks but three. Of them and that's an, interesting mix? Isn't it and and and, you know I don't think I don't think that's going. To last I think that's something he's trying to run the non conference schedule and we'll see if we see three again next week. Against BYU maybe maybe. You're undecided we got our first extended look, at, chase garbage Brandon mcelwain is Justin, told us he's like trying to tackle. Running back he can really. Great athlete Big strong and very fast It's, it's, gonna be interesting well okay Cowans at twenty. Four seventeen over North Carolina this is the Cal football postgame show LA..

"Slash solid verbal. Where are you want to go next in? Let's talk about the Bauer. Our, let's talk about your enthusiasm. Cal went five and seven a year ago, but this year they have ten guys back offense at eight on defense. They do this year. The road schedule isn't terrible. Okay. Now keep keep this in mind. I say that but only start talking about a team like Cal, it's not so much a question of whether or not the talent will perform on the road. This is a question we ask about teams that I think are more known quantities that we expect more from. We can ask that question about Washington or about Stanford or Auburn, Alabama, Georgia teams that we know what we're going to get will that team perform on the road for Cal, it's really a question across the board about whether or not the talent is elite enough to win. Period. All right. Is Cal elite perhaps as a question, we can ask ourselves spots about the Cal golden bears. I suspect the answer. The answer is no, I promise you. Every week that we preview games this year I am going to check in is Cala elites. I hope you do. I'm going to can we know the answer to the question is Cal elite. The answer's no. August where I'm going with this though, is that Justin Wilcox is elite at getting the most out of his guys. So even if he doesn't have high end talent, you're gonna see a lot of puck nece out there. Plucking us out there. These guys are playing hard. The Bauer, our will be fun to watch with Ross Bowers starting quarterback. I think realistically, we're talking six, six, seven, five, but it would not surprise me see eight. I like this Cal team because they're gonna play hard. I think the returning talent will be something that just a Wilcox is gonna use as a springboard to improve upon his five wins from year ago. So it's difficult for me to get fully on board with the team that went to and seven in the Pac twelve last year. Fair point, very fair. They lose seven of their last nine. In they were competitive. I will say that they were competitive. They lose double overtime to Arizona. They lose by a field goal in very strange game to Stanford. They lose by field goal to UCLA so they were, they were competitive. And I think that shows a lot to your use of the word plucky which makes me a little uncomfortable. But I'm, I'm okay with it. When I look at what they have right now, I am not sold on Ross Bowers, and I'm not necessarily sold on Brandon mcelwain who was pushing him the South Carolina transfer, but I love their coordinators. I love beau, Baldwin loved him to ruder their past defense. It's very tough, not too. When you see things crumbling around you when the offense is taking a step back to not sort of let your guard down. I like that they played hard all year long. I like that they're non conference schedules. Pretty good. This year, they go to North Carolina, which was just delta blow like eight and a half hours after we did our. Coastal preview with thirteen players getting suspended for selling Jordan's. They have Oregon after Oregon. Stanford in that's at Cal is a big body blow situation. There. They've Arizona after AirAsia USC they have Washington. At Cal before Washington Stanford's. That's a look ahead situation and they go to USC a week before the the rivalry game against UCLA USC has so situationally cows in a pretty good space. The corners are really, really good. Their defensive pieces that are really, really good. I like them at linebacker. The big thing to me is in looking at them big picture and how they perform. I think this is a product of the coordinator situation. I was talking to our pal Yogi Roth and he keeps track of something unique in the way that like Bruce introduced us to his body blow theory, which may or may not mathematically check out, but it's just a theory and Yogi while the games are going on, he calls games the Pac twelve network, hopefully look it up. It may might behind your local cable package. He keeps track of unforced errors like in tennis, like in tennis. So that's penalties drops. Miscommunication. Where like a quarterback throws the ball downfield. Nobody's there because the receiver ran different row..
