"He traded, he traded Logano hoppy, who is a really good catching prospect who was never going to play in the majors for the Phillies because they have signed JT Realmuto to the contract that he has. And they treat him for another young player who just better fit positionally and Brandon marsh and I know those people who do not did not like that trade at the time and still don't like it because they felt like that the Philly should have gotten more for a hobby, but it was a trade in a sense. It wasn't Nebraska just like unloading a prospect for an overpriced veteran, I guess, right? I mean, it was him getting a younger player with 6 years of club control or 5 years of control to a better fit positionally and will be an everyday player on the 2023 fillies as well. So I mean, look, he's held on to their top prospects. Like Andy painter, Chris mcgarry, mccabe, their top three pitching prospects are still here. Johann Rojas, probably their best prospect, still here. The best prospects he's traded really since he's taken over the Phillies have been Logano hobby and I can spend Brown who is kind of a pop up guy. They traded him for Dave Robertson last deadline that was a deal that I don't know, I guess it was okay. I mean, they won the national tenant, so whatever. But he's how long to his guys. And I think he's willing to see that through. I don't think they're going to trade any of those pitching prospects in the near future. I think they want to see those guys through. Well, and one of them who they absolutely did not trade and who looks like he's going to have a big role in the big league club this year is Andrew painter. So, you know, we want to give credit when the prospects do get held onto. What should Philly fans expect from painter and do you think that he is going to crack the opening day roster? I'm trying to be careful in the way that I write and talk about Andrew painter because he's 19 and he turns 20 in mid April and it's not fair to overhype prospects. It's not fair to put huge expectations on a picture, even if he's the best 19 year old ever, he's still going to have some growing pains because that's just how it works in the sport. He's every bit the real deal. And there is a clear reason why they're pushing him and why they are, you know, have left the door open for him, not just left the door, but I mean, they've really just are holding the door open for him to win this 5th starter spot out of camp. And that's crazy. It's absolutely crazy that they've reached this point, but I wrote a story in the athletic earlier in the spring about the relationship and the trust that has really built because a coach that he worked with when you was 14 years old at crusty sports over on the other side of Florida is here with affiliates. These are director of pitching development. He's very highly regarded, Brian caplan. And they've spent a lot of time thinking about how to treat Andrew painter and whether this is right for him right for the franchise. And after all these meetings and these thoughts and they really came to the decision that that they want to see if you can do this. And whether or not he breaks camp with them, he's very clearly going to pitch for the 2023 Phillies and have a role and have some sort of meaningful role, I think, on this season. I can't wait to see what it looks like in a gratefully game, even though it's not even the biggest stage. I'm in close to it, but I can't wait to see it. I can't wait for other people to see it. It's not just because he throws really hard and he's really tall he's 6, 7, throws an upper 90s. He just has such polish for an 19 year old both on the mound and off the field. He's been able to handle everything thrown on the spring and there is a lot of hype and there's a lot of attention on him. It's been remarkable to watch. And there's been that affiliate 700 teenagers from our pitch for them in a game since 1980. There's only been four since 1992 in the majors, which is crazy. He's in rarefied territory right now. And I understand why. And we could maybe save Noah sang for a second and ask about him next. But other than the intrigue about painter and whether he'll be a part of the rotation. There's not a ton of unsettled spots on the roster entering the spring, so other than that 5th starter battle. I mean, there are always bullpen and bench spots up for grabs to some extent. But is there any other intriguing positional battle here question about players who may or may not make it? Hot really been? I mean, I can't ever remember the Phillies going into a spring with 7 locks and their bullpen. And they have set a box and they're open, which is crazy. They really have two bench spots open. They're going to rotate the DH price Harper is not going to be healthy to start the season. When he returns in June or July, he'll be the DH.

"About Alex verdugo and also trying to get his players going in the face of a lot of negativism from the Red Sox fan base. We expect that at Chris sale. In 2023. I expect him to get on the mound Saturday. That's the way I'm talking this. We talk about his situation a few weeks ago and so far so good. You know, he throw open yesterday today he felt great. We're going to attack the next bullpen the way we were supposed to and we'll take it there by day, but everything looks great. You know, you talk to him and he's excited about the opportunity to go out there and compete finally healthy since 2018 to be honest with you. He impacts those two guys. We talk about it yesterday in our meeting. You know, it's been a while. We haven't seen this to left. He's on the mound. So so far, so good. And like I said, I'm not going to get ahead of myself. I'd done that the last two years and something happens, right? Broken pinky, you know, right in the bike, whatever, and we've just been patient, but he's been good at mental, he's been great. How do you handle when you have the departure of a long-standing player like Xander bogarts? How do you handle that with your players? Well, to be honest with you, we have to turn a page. That is the most important thing, and we love bogarts and Vasquez and Rodriguez and Martinez and bets, you know, I don't call them by the first name anymore. You know, they're playing for another team. I just joking, but that's the way we have to approach it. And we appreciate everything they've done. They did for us throughout the years, but if you go to a Clubhouse now, you know, you got JT, you gotta add them, you know? You got key kept playing new position. You got Rafi. We just signed a huge contract again. If you ask one of those guys, they can care less about what happened last year. Or what happened two years ago or in 18, you know, as organization, we have to turn the page. We wish in the best, you know? That's when they play the Red Sox, but there's a new team. There's a lot of new guys in this roster. We only had three guys left from 2018 and three coaches too. So we got to talk 2023 the right way. We come from a disappointing season. We know we play in the best division baseball. We have a lot of work to do, but our goal is to get better and see where you take us. You challenge Alex verdugo with the NLS season and it looks like he answered the challenge with how he looks early in camp which you see in ham and your converse about your conversations with him. Yeah, I mean, it's one of those that fiber 6 years ago when people talk about this kid, right? It was a 5 tool player. He's going to impact the game on both sides of the field and it was good for the Red Sox 21 who was solid for us. Last year, you know, just, I don't want to say he struggled, but he didn't play up to his potential. And he recognized that, you know, he played a little bit banged up. He posted, which is very important, but I think physically he's in a much better place. We're going to challenge him to play fast. One of the things that people haven't talked too much about is like the player right field is going to it's going to be important now. You know, without the shift, there's not a guy in that hole, you know, is about to old school baseball ride man at first. Left handed hitter should the hole in the right field has to make plays. And he understands that. I'm excited for him that he's going to the tournament and play from Mexico. I think it's going to put him in a good spot and he's up to the challenge. You know, like I said, yesterday bucks number one. He was checked, you know? And now we just got to keep continue to get better, continue to work the way he's been doing. And I believe he's going to have a solid year. You've been in Boston a long time. And you know how the narrative goes. You guys drew a lot of criticism during the course of the winter time. How do you handle that with your players? I think if you go to a locker, you talk about JT and yoshida and verdugo and better shape. Adam Duvall was his champion kika Hernandez was here's champion. Kenley Jensen, you know, Corey Kluber, tusayan. So for everything everybody's talking about, hey, man, I get it. You know, we were horrible last year, so I don't blame you guys to think that we're not a good team, but we do have a good group. We have a good baseball team. We just got to keep working and get better. Thanks, Alex. No problem. Thank you brother. Good to see you. Bleacher tweets already buster bleacher tweets for a Thursday. Any discussion about reducing length of commercial breaks, I'm sure it's all about revenue, but there must be other ways to have ads that don't require in terminal break in the action. Now, Peter, that's part of the, as you noted, it's part of how, you know, Major League Baseball, how players get their money. And they're not going to reduce that. They're just not. It's always comes up when we talk about pay to play and reducing commercials. That's how you pay the bills. And with your broadcast partners and they're just not going to do that. Mark wooster writes in Don Mattingly had several nicknames, including Donny baseball, but he said cap was his favorite being captain of the Yankees does mean something big to the players. You know buster, we talked about this. We kind of mocked it, but I did kind of appreciate Aaron judge stepping up and being like, I'll play in left field, you know? Like, I'll do whatever. That was a captain Y kind of move from him. And he would have done it before he got named captain. If they never named him captain, he would have done that. All right, Lee Kemp at Lee camp zero 5 one one rates and I recently read a great and glorious game baseball writings of a Bartlett giamatti and enjoy giamatti's thoughts on baseball and its fit as America's pastime if still living. What might giamatti think of the world baseball classic in baseball's growing international appeal? Anything that would expand baseball as in an international way, I think Bartlett bar giamatti would have absolutely loved it. The bar G Madi was a pure baseball fan. Gabe at GP zero 6 one one 9 rights and I understand the backlash from fans for trades with division. But if you were waving the white flag anyway, wouldn't it make sense to do it at the expense of your future rivals? Wouldn't Mookie to the raise, make more sense in the long term for Boston. You're thinking reflects that of modern front offices. Remember Billy bean was one of the first that I've heard say that. Like, who cares about trading in the division? Yes, as long as you're making yourself better, that's the priority. And sure you take in prospects away, you know, from a potential rival in making a deal in the division. And I think most front offices feel that way, I will say it's the owners a lot of times that will step in and say, for example, to the mets or to the Yankees, hey, don't deal with it with our city rival. The angels and for example, if the angels trade Shohei Ohtani this year during the course of the season, I think we can pretty much safely assume he ain't going to be traded the Dodgers. PK Steinberg writes in when Harper comes back and is cleared to play in the outfield who is the Philly center Fielder, it feels like they have both too many outfielders and yet also not enough. Brandon marsh, I think he's been working on his, you know, hitting his left handed pitching so he can play more and center. Alex darker writes in hey buster, it seems like the reds have been trying to replicate the raised model. They traded away key players with two years of control left and put emphasis on pitching development. How would you grade the reds progress so far? How can they do better? I say an a minus. Yeah, I don't know if I'm willing to give a grade that high because we haven't really seen the impact as much in the big leagues, but I will say when I talk to folks with other teams, they feel like the reds are putting themselves in position to progress. I guess the question Taylor is, you know, will they the red's ownership, they're in a position to potentially take a move forward? Will they spend more? It's the same question we're seeing with the Orioles. The Orioles clearly took a huge step forward last year development of their best young players, but the question

"Know, I think Bryce and Scott will benefit a little bit Brandon marsh, JT will benefit. I mean, it's great base stealer. I think there's a few guys. Now, you know, we've got to make sure that we're not overdoing it in that, you know, there's a certain amount of injury factor that goes into stealing a lot of bases. And you really get banged up. And we don't want to overdo it, but I think we're going to benefit from it for sure. And the fact that JT is such a good thrower, I think we'll have more of a tendency to run than other teams against us. How much of a difference you're going to make for left handed hitters because you watched it play out day after day after day with ships. Yeah, I think big time. Especially our two big left handed hitters with schwarber and harp. I don't know what the number is, but it seems like that would be a very high number that they just pounded the ball right into the ship last year. So I think that I think batting averages would go up for sure. And I think we'll benefit from it for sure. One thing that I heard about it from the Red Sox in 2021, and then sort of saw it play from afar day after day with you guys last year, Kyle schwarber's leadership. As he gets older as a player, what did you see in that? I think he's very self deprecating. So he's really easy to talk to because he dogs himself way more than he dogs anybody else. And one of the biggest things I saw with him was that he brought the young guys into the fold. Early hitting, he dragged guys out to hit off this curveball machine at two 30 in the afternoon and got to know them and made them feel comfortable so that they can perform at the highest level. And then once he gets in the Clubhouse, he's all about fun. He is about preparation works very hard. But it's about fun. Having fun with everything you do, and you know, he's a guy that when because everybody goes through slumps, when he's going through a tough time, he's the guy over in the other corner of the locker room, helping somebody else that's going through a tough time. And not many guys are like that. He's pretty special guy. All right, as you go into spring training for you in terms of trying to get back to the World Series or win the World Series this year, what are some keys for you in terms of what's going to happen with the 2023 Phillies? I think stay healthy. Number one, you know, our goal, my goal every year, whether I was the bench coach or third base coach or the manager is to make sure that these guys are ready to play opening day at their highest level. And be healthy. So there's a progression that you got to go through. And you got to be careful with the guys. I think that's a key. A lot of people have asked me about complacency. And I keep telling them, I don't think with this group. Talk to me next year. If we win the World Series, and we'll talk about complacency. But we won the national championship, but we didn't want in the World Series, and that's really our goal. So although you got to try and keep your finger on it, I don't think that's not a major concern for me. But if we stay healthy and we do what we're supposed to do, I think we're going to be in a really good spot. Yeah, and I think rob, part of the reason why I agree with you, you know, and who gives a crap what I think I'm not in your Clubhouse every day, but you guys have so much fun. That's what jumped out to me is that your players seem to enjoy each other, which is a huge 6 months is a huge deal. It really is. And you know, it's the music in the Clubhouse. It's Kevin long in the cage. It's Caleb in the bullpen. The coaches and the players really have a lot of fun together and the players. It's really a good group of people. And I said to my wife a couple weeks ago, I said, I'm so excited to go to spring train and not because I'm the manager. It's just, I want to be around these guys because it's such a fun group to be with. And there's a difference between having fun and messing around. And they don't mess around. They have fun because once you start messing around, you're allowed to get into some injury problems. They don't mess around. They work hard. They compete, but they have a lot of fun while they're doing it. Rob, good to talk with you. Thanks, buster. I appreciate it. AJ preller is

All right, we're in the final period of a matchup near and dear to the hearts of capitals fans, the caps leading the team they beat for their first Stanley Cup two to one over the Vegas golden knights, nearly midway through this third period, and Marcus Johansson scored early on the power play, Trevor van reems dike with his first goal of the season in the second to put the caps back in front and Charlie lindgren 22 saves in net so far as the caps try to get back in the win column. We looked at what we tried to do with William and it didn't work. We didn't find the fit that we were hoping to find. "Researcher at ESPN he's the head honcho on the show get up or at least that's what he told us and he is the dad of two babies and we love hearing all those stories about your little girls before we start on the podcast. I would say this, my mom sent me as you were asking the question and you're like, I don't know if other babies do, this as much as our girls do or they cry as much as this one, my mom said to me, many, many years ago that everyone wants to hear all the time that their babies are totally unique. Yes, is that true? Yes, of course it is true. The problem if we're even to call it that is that the uniqueness is just multiplied by two. So I don't know if there are more or less fussy or more or less happy or more or less poopy. I just know that there's two of everything. And so in some sense, it's obviously an amazing glorious blessing, but there are very few times during the day where neither of them are making a sound. So you're always checking in and out. So I spend most of my day, like looking at them, looking at my screen, looking at the TV watching the game, whenever whatever, but look, maybe I'm an enormous luck to all of my Philadelphia theme. So what I can definitely say is, the girls are doing a great job and they've entered this world. Yeah, and they rank one and two and everything. They're no question about that. One and two. Yep. On the top of every palette now and I'll leave that to you to decide the one and two. But there is my hour. It varies by hour. Exactly. All right, so you are a Phillies fan. You would be watching this anyway because you're a baseball fan, but you're really locked in, tell me what we can learn from the Phillies Padres national league championship series. Yeah, buster, I want to go high level on this. I think we can learn three things in particular. One, we can learn the value of ownership that for the last 5 years has been committed to winning at all costs, literally. The felice of increased their payroll by a $133 million over the last 5 years. The Padres, by 117 million, those are the two largest jumps in the national league over that time. The second thing we can learn buster is the value of a true superstar in his prime. All of this was triggered in that two week span in 2019 when many Machado and Bryce Harper both signed as free agents. Now, we know that mega contracts to historically have been bad investments, but both of those guys were 26 at the time. And so not only do you get that kind of prime production, but you also get that Tom Brady in fact, where other players want to come play with you. You recruit other players to come to those cities. They're sort of forced multipliers for lack of a better term. And the third thing we can learn is obviously the extraordinary value of the trade deadline. I mean, obviously Juan Soto was the headliner, but Josh hader has been a revelation this postseason. Fran and drury was great yesterday, even Noah syndergaard and Brandon marsh and David Robertson have been different speakers the last couple months for the Philips. I mean, we're one year removed from Eddie Rosario and Jorge soler being massive difference makers in the postseason for Atlanta. I'm obviously not telling you anything you don't already know. But the aggression by both front offices, but the Phillies and the Padres, both pay dividends, and I think go a long way in why these teams are in this position. Yeah, it's very interesting and I know Red Sox fans will sort of ring their hands and talk about Dave Nebraska and say, you know, all he does is spend resources. He's pretty good at identifying players, you know? And through the years, he seems to have a sense of the moment and for picking the right guys. A trade that really embody that for me was when he traded for Doug fister from the Seattle Mariners when he was running the tigers and Fisher turned out to be a terrific pitcher for them. He definitely seems to have a feel for fixing spots. And I like the fact that he's open minded. So when he looks at his team, he's not going to say, yeah, you know, our team is great. Our team is perfect. They went out and improved their defense. You know, during the course of the year, from where they were at the beginning of the year to now, I asked this if Eduardo will ask it to you after watching the first two games, do you have a strong sense of the Phillies or the Padres having a distinct advantage moving forward in this series? I do not. This to me is the definition of a coin flip series. I guess traditionally the fact. And so funny, that's exactly the phrase that water and I use. Corn flip. Who knows? Because for every point, there's a counterpoint. Obviously, the Phillies winning one in San Diego and theoretically means traditionally that you've stolen one. But at the same time, you feel Padres have to feel really good about their starting pitcher and game three in relation to hours. And the fact that in games four and 5, the Padres bullpen, which is deeper, will probably have a big advantage because they will be pitching on no rest where the Phillies will be decimated in that sense. So to me, you could go any number of ways.

"Now, and this is not a commentary about Perry menacing. This is about all of baseball. Now, you see general managers executives in the office of the manager after the game and basically say, okay, and they're not second guessing, but they want to know what the managers thinking. And they're just have been a number of situations that have popped up, which, you know, from that front office perspective, you had questions, the one you cited is exactly right with Corey Seager. I still haven't talked to anyone who baseball who understood that decision. Then we had the situation spring training where the angels after a winner during the lockout there had been discussion in their organization about moving Mike Trout to the corner. But in their rationale, I think, was probably going to be built around the fact that they could save some wear and tear on trout by putting them in right or left field. And they also had a guy that they considered to be an elite center field or a Brandon marsh as they started spring training, but then Joe, in speaking with reporters, told them that, before travel was told. Trout told reporters that he heard about it on social media for the first time, so the whole idea was tabled out of respect for a future Hall of Famer and a face of franchise, and there was a lot of frustration over that. So I think there were, if you're going to make decisions as a manager now, you don't necessarily have to be a 100% in agreement with the front office, but you better have some explanations that they're going to buy. Yeah, no doubt. And, you know, that spring training deal with trout. You wonder why and how that communication line broke down. And I know they couldn't talk with trout for a long time. During the lockout, but yeah, you got to have that respect for the game's best player. You got to have that discussion, you know, either the end of last season or at some point or the first day of spring training. And obviously they didn't have it. And that's not the way you treat Mike Trout. Even if from a baseball standpoint, maybe moving them to left field makes sense, you owe it to trout to discuss it with him privately first. So that was completely inexcusable. Yeah, and it was a little bit confusing, too, because it's not like Mike Trout's a difficult personality. Right. All I've ever heard from the staff is is that if they have ideas, he's very open to those discussions. You know, I covered the Orioles back in the 90s, Davy Johnson was managing the Orioles, and he wanted to move Cal Ripken to third base because he thought he had lost range of shortstop. And so Devi told reporters first that he was moving Cal the third, I was among the group that ambush talents at Davey said you're moving to third base and part of the reason why Davey did it was to get that locked in stone. He wanted us to be the messengers with Cal. You don't have to do that. Right, no. Trout's talked about his defense before he knows that in some years his metrics haven't been great. You know, he's worked to try to improve his reads in his jumps. You know, but at some point, you know, you're no longer the best center Fielder on your team. You got to move. Even if you're Mike Trout, but again, have that discussion, you know, don't rub Mike Trout the wrong way and get the season off to a bad start. Do you think Joe Maddon will manage again? I'm going to give you that. That's the question that I got asked on radio this morning. I'm curious to see what you think. I don't think so, you know, he's 68, which is a factor, obviously, you know, dusty baker, Tony La Russa and their 70s are showing that age isn't the only criteria in this day and age, but you know, I don't think the end of his cubs tenure ended all that great. There were some questions at that time how he was managing the bullpen and some of his other in game decisions. And there's a point where your style just no longer works like it once did. And maybe the Joe man style kind of not what you want in today's game. Obviously he's an all time great manager 31st on the all time wins list. Do you want a World Series took the race to a World Series? I don't think he's quite a Hall of Fame manager, but no, I don't think he gets another job. You'll never have to buy a beer in Chicago again. That is true. You know, he'll always have a place to park his RV there. All right, last night, another home run for Aaron judge, you know me. I'm an on pace guy. I find it fascinating because I think it's a great way to frame what players are doing. After that home run last night, he's on pace to finish this year with 64 homers, 26 doubles, a 133 runs, a 130 RBI, 72 walks, a 185 hits, he's got a slash line of three 15, three 85, 6 85. What do you got in Aaron judge? Well, I don't know if he's actually getting enough credit buster for this season he's having, remember, we got to factor in. Offenses down, hitting for average harder than ever. Home runs. Yeah, they've been increasing a little bit the last few weeks, but home runs, not as easy as they've been in recent years. So buster, Aaron judge is a two O four OPS plus. So that means he's a 104% better than the average major league hitter. Wow. Well, since 1970, over 50 years,.

"I don't know that he's as great a hitter as he was last year, but they recently extended him. I hope that he gets more playing time. And specifically with Otani, who he did work with, I think, at a driveline facility in February, and he worked with him a bit more in the second half of last season. But really, that lineup, it starts as well as any lineup in the game, and so it's just kind of an open question. How much are you going to get out of Jared? Well, I think has proven himself now as a solid middle of the order guy, but Justin Upton, you know, does he have anything left? And then how much are you going to get out of the younger guys? Like, I feel like they really need either Joe Adele or Brandon marsh to click and ideally both of them. And I guess there are reasons to think that that could happen. And marsh is a good defender, so he's given you that and Adele, I know that late last year, he cut down on his strikeouts and before he got hurt, he was looking promising, but really, you need those guys who, for now, are flanking Mike Trout and maybe someday soon could displace him in center. One of those guys really needs to lengthen that line up, I think. Yeah, I think I'm optimistic about Marshall. He had the shoulder issue last year, his father passed away. Like there was just a lot going on for Brandon marsh, but yeah, you kind of need one or both of those guys to really take a step forward. And I think part of the problem here is that this is a bad form system. This is a really bad farm system. Like retention was their only guy. Not only on the top 100, he's their only 50 future value prospect. So some other guys are further away and you might expect them to help in a couple of years, but if some of these moves that they've made don't work out either because guys don't take a step forward, they end up being injured like they're not in a position to deal from the farm to get reinforcements at the deadline. So this is kind of the angels and they might not have much else by the end of the year. Yeah, yeah. With you guys, it's just there's a lot of pieces here that are close to contention and then there's some real weak spots and this is a team just defined by its strengths and weaknesses. There's not a lot of just competent players like the players in the middle on the squad, right? There's either deficiencies or absurd strengths. So I think it's fair to say to expect one of a dollar or march to now you got Martian Walsh in my head confused then. But I think it seems like one of them is a good bet to break out and as you said, marsh is at least the defense means he's going to be okay. Yeah, there's a floor there. Yeah. So I don't know. I mean, in looking at, you know, I'm going to skip to the next thing here, but so breakout pick. The most important rookie is a really interesting player for is it on this team is interesting because they don't really have as Meg just said, like no farm system players, but there's this one fellow who the LA times wrote about and I'm taking an interest in his career now. You could probably guess who I'm talking about his name is Michael stefanik. He's sort of like David Fletcher esque in some ways and that came from a smaller school. This was a much smaller school and really crushed last year in the double and triple-A. And he might, I wonder if they're going to try to use him as the other end of the middle infield and then move Fletcher to short, something like that as the season progresses, I could see that. He's like the one guy who there's some real upside. So to go back to breakup, I would say one of the two, take your picks, marsh, or Adele, and then in stefanik is like maybe the one real chance at an important rookie that I see there. Yeah, I think she's rule 5 eligible. So they have reason to sort of get a sense of what they have in him and might do that at the big league level. Is detmer still rookie eligible? He is, yeah. Okay, well, he'll help you my guy then, because I am a believer in him. I mean, he just, he missed so many bets in double-A triple-A and then things started out okay and then sort of went south and the control wasn't there. He was Homer prone, but 5 starts. I mean, I think he has some pretty nasty stuff and also some pretty aesthetically pleasing stuff. And he climbed quickly. So I think that maybe he could kind of consolidate that. And he's definitely important because of the pitching depth issues that we've discussed. He's probably, he's a better pick just because it's like they absolutely need a two or three starter to emerge and he's like really the only player that can become that this season, right? Yeah. All right, well, any other stories of interest for you with the angels? I mean, nothing is more interesting to me in baseball than Otani and trout. So but I'm curious if they will draft even one position player this year. That's a good question. Yeah. This team has made some drafting mistakes over the years we could say. That's a very charitable there's some choices that they made that there were other choices that were more popular at the time that proved to be the would have proved to be far better selections. So there really hurting as a result of that 5, 7 years down the line. Yeah. And I guess another thing to watch is the ohtani extension question and he has signed through next season, but I don't know why he would necessarily be motivated to sign an extension. I think, you know, Mike Trout did Mike Trout was content there for whatever reason and just wanted to stick around, but ohtani, you know, he's made a couple of comments and some of them there was question about whether it was interpreted correctly or whether it was taken out of context. But he clearly wants to win that does seem to be important to him, and no one really knows exactly why he picked the angels in the first place still like that still seems to be something of a mystery and whether it's just that he thought that they were really committed to letting him be a two way player, which if that was part of the reason, then that has certainly panned out. But yeah, I don't know like they just haven't demonstrated that they can win with him or with trout, so if you're ohtani and you know that you could have a home anywhere and be a bigger star elsewhere and play in the postseason elsewhere. I don't know how much he cares about stardom and endorsements and all of that. He has plenty of endorsements as it is, especially in Japan. So, you know, I just would probably be in wait and see mode myself if I were Shohei Ohtani, but they certainly have a reason to try to keep him. But if they don't, then you do start to wonder about the window, right? Because you have trout, but if he's getting older and Rendon is getting older and ohtani could potentially be leaving and you don't have strong reinforcements from the farm. I don't know, it's like the window does seem to be possibly closing, which is why I think there's frustration with Artie Moreno and the lack of spending in some areas, not that this has been one of the worst offenders in terms of payroll, but it seems like he has treated the competitive bounce tax threshold as a pretty hard calf other than one early year. I think his second year of owning the team. So you just perpetually would like to see the make one more move, maybe, and they just haven't quite done that. Yeah. So you're telling me you been like me once a month or so, just wonder why Shohei Ohtani picked the angels and things about it for a little while. Okay, good to know. Good to know. I'm kind of happy it worked out that way because again, I feel like Joe Maddon has been a good manager for him. I don't know whether he's a good manager period or not, but for Otani specifically and just letting him do his thing. I think that's worked out great. My main interest is letting Otani to his thing more so than like whether he's on a good team or whether the angels are good, although I would like Otani to be on a good team because that's the other way I think that he could top last year. I mean, yes, he could be so good at pitching and just cut out that first month of last year where I guess he was effective from a run prevention standpoint, but he was all over the place and.

"Doesn't seem like they're necessarily a strong sense of exactly when and how this happened. Yeah, and we keep hearing and it's true that he's a quick healer, but he's been heard a bunch of times, and I've heard more than once that, you know, eventually he's going to need, obviously, need surgery on the shoulder, and now he's trying to delay surgery on the wrist to make sure he can avoid maybe avoid that, but the bottom line is for a really young, strong athletic kid. He gets hurt a lot, and it's weird to watch because he's such a good player. And he's so good for the game. This is just such a bad development for the potteries. I feel sorry for them and him because this is not the way you need to start spring training, especially with a new manager. Yeah, and there was a lot of speculation in the industry yesterday. Will the Padres go and be aggressive in other parts of the team? Will they go and make deals that augment the club for this year? Here's the problem, Tim, is that they've kind of tapped out on resources to some degree unless they decide to spend more of Peter seidler's money, they have traded a lot of prospects the last couple of years. They have spent a lot of money. They're one of the teams had actually paid a luxury tax last season. I don't know if there's necessarily an easy place for them to pivot. No, I don't see it either. I don't see a free agent that they could just go get and rent for three months and then have tatis ready whenever that is. So I think they're in a bit of a spot. Jake cronin worth can play shortstop. Kim, the Korean kid, he can play shortstop, but you know, it's just not the you can move Manny Machado over there if you wanted to, but it's not the same when your best player is your shortstop. So they've got some work to do to get that thing better. What did you think of the Mariners blockbuster trade with the Cincinnati reds, taking advantage of the reds fire sale? Well, I loved it for the Mariners. Jesse winker is a really good hitter. And he's getting better every year. He has tremendous power and. Suarez was really good hitter a couple of years ago. And I know he hit under 200 last year, but he finished strong last year. And he's not going to have to play shortstop, which was a mistake in the first place, put him over there because I think it affected him offensively. So I think you add those two bats to what is a pretty good lineup anyway. And now you got a team that was on the cusp of making the playoffs last year and you add two more hitters for the middle of that order or close to the middle. I really liked what the Mariners did yesterday and I'm sorry. I feel sorry for the reds and their fans. This just doesn't seem fair that they've already moved two position players and lost Nick Castellanos to free agency and then traded sunny gray it just doesn't seem right that the Cincinnati reds have been around for a 150 years. It just doesn't seem right that these deals should be going on, but this is the reality of the world in Cincinnati. All right, a strange situation with the angels. I must tell you that, you know, last year as you saw the emergence of Brandon marsh as one of baseball's best defensive center fielders. And that's what I've heard. I haven't really seen play that much other than on television. I haven't seen him play in person, but people I speak has spoken with with other teams really think that's how good this guy is is a defender. And so the writing on the wall that at some point might trout has been the center Fielder is going to move to a corner spot. Marsh would be in center. And I assumed all along that there would be conversations this spring with Mike about that, much as there was the same way there was when Tory hunter was the angels center Fielder and they moved him to the corner to make room for Mike Trout. And then yesterday, you know, the day after Joe Maddon talked about moving trout to a corner, trout talked to reporters and said that the first he learned of this conversation was on Twitter. And then he mentioned that no, you know, I'm a center Fielder in my mind and by the end, the organization was kind of backing off, Tim, given Mike trouts, extraordinary personality, his generosity is a person, I can't believe how badly they botched this. I can't draw any other conclusion than Joe Maddon botched this. And I say, with great respect to Joe, who I think someday will make a speech in cooperstown for all of his work with the rays, being the manager of the cubs when they won 2016. But this was a disaster that would be would be even worse if not for Trump's personality. Yeah, look, we all understand not everyone, except for William Hayes, plays center field into his late 30s. I mean, only the greatest center fielders do that. So Mike Trout was going to move at some point, but you're right. You should never find out on Twitter about something like that and Brandon marsh has a chance to be a really good defensive center Fielder. He already is. But you're not moving Mike Trout out for a relative unproven kid who has a chance to be really good, but he's not an established player yet. And I remember when the reds moved Ken griffey junior out of center field, just how difficult that was. You have to go to your star player first and say, look, I'm going to bring this up today or this is going to come up. Just want to let you know, the fact that that apparently didn't happen is not a good idea by Joe manner or anybody else with the angels. I was covering the Orioles in 1996 when Davey Johnson told reporters, including myself that Cal Ripken was going to be moved to third base before he spoke to Kala about it. Now, I believe that Davey made the decision that he was going to tell the media first to box call in to because he thought Cal might be difficult about it. So he just wanted to get it on the record and then cow was very unhappy about it. The way that it played out, and that was the situation I was thinking of yesterday when this happened. Again, given Mike's personality, I'm just so shocked that they box themselves into this corner. All right. Yesterday talking Yankees camp was the trade for Josh Donaldson last year, Donaldson said some stuff about Gary Cole using sticky stuff. And that led to this meeting yesterday between Cole and Donaldson and Aaron Boone's office. Here's Brian cashman talking about all that. Yeah, called dare it last night to give him a heads up in advance just because of how the public.

I've waited patiently for a week but still no answer. Buster casually dropped thoughts. That mike trout will be playing left field next year and a podcast last week. What is the rationale here that trout as he gets older as we saw with torii hunter when trod came on They'll eventually move him to corner spot. And the merger brandon marsh as an excellent defensive center. fielder I think makes that more likely that it's going to happen sooner rather than later. So next year in spring training we hear from joel madden or maybe during the off season at that What they're gonna do with trout. That would not surprise me at all and mike. Trout is a lot like barry bonds in that there's so many elements to his game that you know mung the best ever throwing is not one of those skills that he has throwing as the weakest of all skills last one for the regular season matt at kayaking. Smith rates in buster taylor. Thanks for taking us through another great season. You guys are awesome. Do you have a favorite moment or stat from the season that you'd like to talk about today man. "Yeah this whole plane ferenza not really good. Yeah i don't know like you're right. They have interesting pieces. But i don't know why like dylan more dillmore just playing somewhere different everyday. Which i think is the right way to use him tie. France should be your everyday but again like evan whites hurt. They're just reasons that that what they have to do. But again it's sub optimal. Play this. I like their roster. More than i like cleveland by a decent amount like beavers great so few hitters a even think could be decent one day on their roster in the mariners roster has several guys and the good this year. But yeah and just throw reps it. Those guys like kelly all the raps to see and watch his progress. But there's gonna be some bus whether it's true our who who knows some of that group. Kyle lewis awesome. He's been hurt a lot in his head. A bunch of knee issues like their reasons. There's there's attrition. That has nothing to do with anyone being wrong about players talent just it just tends to happen so i i think that they should be in depth accumulation mode to try to combat that now the angels a bigger. Do exactly what they should do. Which is they brought me. Detmer's up they're giving adele of brandon marsh chances to keep playing the major league level. They're trying to make every connie start. should be really fine. I think they are handling discount. Lost season quite well not rushing trout back rendova that full season which makes sense but i think this is a pretty solid way to play things for them. They're really no need for them to play over and so getting a bunch of very good prospects ramps intelligent way to handle the rest of the season for them may not think what it is great. Yeah they have a lot of guys coming off the payroll into the year. I wonder what kind of offers they had for. Jose iglesias race. Gracia's ceus. you know everyone. Just sorta needs a lagaras or whatever that's fair. I don't think necessarily handle the trae. Dylan well yeah. But i do think that will. They're doing the rest of the season accents. Maybe they thought they were still contending at the deadline. Likely but it's definitely. Let's watch brandon marsh now and remember that marsh's had shoulder stuff and like his dad who was close to passed so. I'm not expecting a ton from brandon marshall. It's been a rough year for him through a rough couple of years for him because he dealt with twenty twenty. The same as any of us did be like. Let's see joe l. twenty bombs in the minors before they call them up helix really rough twenty twenty but his very talented and he's going to strike out a lot but let's see so much power so those are the two big ones and they're still they're still just unexciting put on. Mlb tv like cut. These guys on because otani is gonna taking battery. Couple innings and adele marsha. Going to and david fletcher does awesome stuff and hose. Iglesias is good for a handful of slick defensive. Plays every night like. They're still held the team to watch. Yeah i watch them yesterday. For basal reason blue jays who were fun and laziest made some real gems. He is one of the players i think is most fun to watch. Relative to how the radius he's good but he's he's just a really good highlight defender jack mayfield story so yeah either yet is lastly. We got the cardinals. Yeah what do you think about this. I mean i'm not thrilled with this cardinals team but the season was undermined by pitching injuries. The nfl is not a good division in the cardinals pitching health for the year. I think it would be a lot closer between them. In the brewers in the reds none of these teams are that great. So i think the cardinals need to figure out which they're young pitchers they can trust in any give. Modesto's were chances to supplant someone. Whether it's tommy. Admit or polio probably edmond. Edmund has been trying batting. Righty against right. Handed pitchers even switch hitter. Because he's just so bad lefty. That's the big side of the platoon. That's that's not good. Yeah it's been interesting to watch like kisner stall and sputter and really struggled to do some of the finer catching stuff. Even though his tutor is the king of those things you know so some of this has been frustrating and like to look at the bullpen coming into the year and thinking. Oh this is a this is a contending bullpen with raising gago. San cabrera and helmsley like every arms. Those guys can throw down with it. Looks like the rays bullpen. The top four looks great. Yeah and again. He just had. They've had a bunch of injuries to guys in the rotation of. It's not surprising like but he carlos martinez if you had told me it's a thumb surgery and not like an oblique or something. I'd been like that's that's seems wrong. But yeah he him. Being hurt feels. Like i think that we could have predicted flirty missing. A bunch of time is not great. Mike is never pitchy is not great. I do think that they after some extended disasters in the bullpen. I look andrew. Miller looks a lot better since returned from injury. Luis garcia really interesting. Actually which is the reliever the former hairdresser. He's a former hairdresser. He's he's not phillies for awhile soon. Probably talking about yet. He's like he's a lot more interesting than i expected. Thought you have back there tation. There's ninety eight it doesn't look unsustainable really heavy like wider doodoo inside. It looks good. I think the the plan of figuring out which open arms work is fine. I think the plan of having john. Lester pitch not so much the tommy edmund. Let's figure out if you're switch hitter thing or not is a vital piece of what they have going on. I don't know like lars. New bar was a guy at one point like early in his time at usc and then he sort of fell off but here he is on a daily grocer so he's a priority avow for me. I think they're making a huge mistake. Handyman majors like wanna know what the the alternative is. Your blamed hamas. And he's gone right. Like scott hearst's austin dean justin williams and lars. New bar are all what i would consider to be like very fringy. Forty man guys let alone active rosser type dudes okay. So wouldn't you rather have austin dean up and not playing often have new bar playing every day in aaa. I'd probably yeah considering that they're essentially playing the same role and dean has a little bit more defensive versatility historically. Although i don't i couldn't tell you. What positions he had all played this year. I just know that over. The course of his career put a bunch of spots. But also you know. He's twenty eight nukhbarsch twenty four sure. Yeah and deans. One of those dudes where it's like. Do you wanna with on a loop void type guy again or do you wanna give someone who's hit consistently in the minors like some some big league. Runcie what he can do. Yeah whatever forty plate appearances. Whatever he's had argued they're not actually giving a new bar that much big league run and it's actually kind of hard to outfield is young. And there's no one obvious who you should your bench for him like giving dylan carlson. Run make sense to the end. You're not gonna bench baiter. O.'neil.

"Fitzgerald chairs. The story of going from undrafted to indy league. Now all the way to triple a. Just one stop away from his lifelong goal of reaching the majors. The pair also talk about using camera technology to improve swing mechanics down to the smallest detail the effects of intentionally hitting for power and what it was like to play behind chris. Sale fitzgerald also talks about how he sticks out a bit in the clubhouse with his statistical approach to the game and you spend a lot of time of course in clubhouses. How many of your teammates look at the stats. The same way you do. None of them. they think i'm crazy. I've tried to have conversations with them and then a few of them juvenile of them get it a few of them understand and you know they'll they'll come around eventually but I know i mean if you want to play the game at the way the front offices are looking at it. I think it's the best way to go is is looking at. Wc clause instead of batting average after that ben clemens and eric and having extended chat about their recent travels in what is going on in the game eric has returned from the area code games in san diego and he goes into what the event was like. And how it comes together especially during a weird time like this and how the wonderful world of shared amateur data works and came to be. Meanwhile ben wants to chat about some of these teams that are realistically out of the playoff hunt but still have things to figure out. What are the guardians going to do with their roster and potential forty man crunches. Can't abraham toro pull off playing second base for the mariners. And what kind of things can the cardinals do next year. And how about the team was shohei. Ohtani mike trout now. The angels of do exactly what they should do. Which is they brought Up they're giving adele of brandon marsh chances to keep playing in the major league level. They're trying to make every otani. Starting event should be fine. I think they're handling this kind of lost season quite well. But before we get to the baseball conversations. I must point you in the direction of the fan. Graphs dot com shop and more specifically. "Hey that's a big piece of cake you have on your plate and he's a little overweight so he got angry and stormed out of the room but next thing you know we find him on the floor in the living room crying not crying sobbing uncontrollable sobbing and saying us. Everybody hates them. We've ruined his life and he wishes he was dead. He does this a lot. Apparently well i wouldn't put that yet based on what you described under the umbrella of serious mental illness or sm. I just yet but definitely. He's got some stuff that these works. Some treatment right unstable mood unstable self concept eating emotionally all this stuff Trouble with his relationships probably depressed. So yes he needs help. He needs help. But but i wouldn't. I can't put it yet in. Sms serious mental illness. I i don't you know we can't necessarily say these going to become psychotic or doing drugs or he's gonna become a manic or something but but it does sound like all that all that self-harm stuff it kind of sounds like a borderline personality disorders. What it sounds like and males do borel impersonality. They have very unstable self concept very unstable mood extreme difficulty regulating emotions and a lot of projection of various types. That's sound like him. Yeah yeah He the parents tried to get him to go to like a psychiatrist but he. He's like Very resistant it. All you think i'm crazy. I'm not crazy i'm not gonna do it. I'd look into dialectical. Behavioral therapy dbt. It's called and tell him it's a way of improving his relationships because that's thing borderlines have trouble with relating relationships. It's a way of helping borderlines keep other people's mind in mind and that's something they have trouble with. So if i'm right that this sort of borderline stuff even if it's not d does a lot for a lot of this kind of unstable. You know stuff that's going on with this guy but he's not crazy he's crazy and he doesn't have serious mental illness and ability. No one suffers more than him right. Although i'm sure he's unpleasant to be around many times says you have a lot of rages and that kind of thing yeah. He gets So angry that his handshake do. He's never he's never heard anyone. Yeah but he does it he does talk about. Oh i kill myself that allows you find right. That's called borderline rage and against self harms. You know that kind of stuff is very constituent borderline stuff so you look up. Orlando's order and see if that doesn't kind of fit with his thing and even if it isn't you know i obviously you're not going to be the diagnosis. I'm not gonna make the diagnosis. But this has that quality. I'm just saying he's like this but he definitely should see somebody and you might be able to persuade him with helping them understand how dialectical behavioral therapy works. And what that is thanks john. Good luck with your brother. Thanks everybody for. Who is the football player by the way the. Where's the green shoes at had. A borderline personality disorder brandon marsh random. Marshall talks a lot about this show brandon marshall stuff he had borderline disorder and can really You know showing that it can happen to anybody comfortable football players you know. There's a treatment for it and brandon talks about that quite a bit brandon marshall. All right anyway. Thank you for calling in. Thank you part of the show today. we appreciate. "One overall pick this year. Benny montgomery as their second best prospect. So they've done well taking high school outfielders with huge upside. They also took lsu right hander. Jaden hill in the second round. Who could be steel in the draft if he stays healthy e thrace monteiro. Who was acquired in the nolan era. Nado blockbuster he sitting to sixty nine with ten doubles thirteen home runs a double a. So he could be called up here sooner than later. So starting with the sell off of nolan. Aaron nado the rockies are starting to replenish that minor league system just a little bit out there in colorado and number twenty three. I have the los angeles angels. They have a couple of tier one guys in the system. Outfielder brandon marsh. The twenty three year old and left handed pitcher re debt. Merce the twenty two year old so both of those guys at the top of the list. You also have sam bachman who was recently drafted this year now into their top. Five prospects shortstop kyran paris has just three professional games under his belt but the nineteen year old is himself a start here in twenty twenty one. So the list there in la starting to replenish again. But that's been the trouble for them as they haven't had the prospects to come up and help guys like shohei. Otani and mike trout get over the hump out there in la number twenty two. I have the saint louis cardinals. They have very high level talent but a relatively large drop off after that they have three tier one guys for the cardinals right now. Third baseman not gorman left-handed pitcher matthew liberty tour and third baseman jordan walker. So two guys at third base tier one guys now. Eventually one of them's gonna win that job and the rest of the guys there. Of course the other guy is going to be moved outside but joshua bias was also a salad pick for them this year. Michael mcgreevey college arm. Who is excellent to nine to alec. Berlin now a fulltime outfielder hitting three hundred with seventeen home runs and high a and aa so the cardinals they got again high level guys there but a bit of a drop off once you get past that first tier and number twenty one. You got the boston red sox. They have forward guys their top prospects right now is the guy. They just picked marcello meyer. The shortstop followed by first baseman tristen. Cassis the twenty one year. Old outfielder jaren duran twenty four years old and then shortstop second baseman jeeter downs are all listed as tier one. Guys potentially right so marcella. My or the five tool shortstop he goes to the top of the rankings judd. Fabian is also a first round talent if he could cut down and swings and misses. You have right hander. Brian bellows throwing the ball. Well to five five at a and aa so the red sox have some good thinks cooking down there on the farm. And i like what they're doing in boston. Higham bloom certainly has on the right page. And when meyer false you and the drafts. I mean you just scoop him up and take him. And you're feeling real good about yourselves and number twenty. I have the kansas city royals. They got themselves five to your one guys so now we're starting to get into a little bit better right. You notice how these tier ones are growing and growing but you got shortstop bobby witt junior left-handed pitcher ace seep left-handed pitcher daniel lynch right handed pitcher jackson co war and first baseman nick product all with top end talents right so they did reach this year for frank. Maza kado at number seven but they signed kansas. Prep right hander. Bencun drope above slot in the second round so they were able to save some money in round one. Spend a little bit more there in round two. It's taken nick pro. Sometimes to figure things out at the plate since he went fourteenth overall back in twenty seventeen. But he's reworked his swing a little bit. He looks better than twenty. Two year olds hitting to eighty eight. Thirteen doubles fifteen. Home runs in fifty six games at aa and the royals again. They're starting to build that depth down there at the minor league level. I number one thousand nine. I have the texas rangers. Jack lighter goes right to the top of the list for texas texas only has two tier one guys right in the royal have five but they got a lot more talent in that two tier level down there in texas jack lighter like i mentioned the tier one guy josh john the other tier one individual but catcher sam. Huff righty co win. Right yeary rodriguez. A lotta guys are tier two there for the rangers and the depth. I like it right. Twenty eight first round. Pick co win is having a strong season. Twenty twenty the twenty one year old has a two four nine era at aa frisco so he started to figure things out so texas looking up there especially on the mound when it comes to the next next round of pitching. That'll be an arlington very soon and number eighteen. I got the detroit tigers. I love these guys at the top spencer torkelsson. I think he's going to be excellent matt. Manning the right handed pitcher right handed picture jackson job who they took it three overall this year riley green in the outfield. I think detroit is certainly trending the right way texas as time madden. I think he's fantastic. Ivan pacheco or isaac. but gieco. he's going to be excellent burto campos. they signed him after. He defected from cuba. But he's got one of the highly higher ceilings in the minor leagues for the tigers. So detroit so and some growth this year at the big league level and i like their minor league system as well and number seventeen. I have the chicago cups. The cubbies got a few tier one guys but a ton of tier two individuals outfielder. Brennan davis is their top prospect braille and marquee left handed. Pitcher is also very good. Ed howard the shortstop at tier one guy for them left handed pitcher jordan wicks was the most polished starter. They took in the twenty twenty. One class infielder reginal prosciutto hitting three ninety five at rookie ball. Outfielder owen cassivi sitting three thirty three rookie ball and both of these guys are guys that they got for you darvish so some of those traits for chicago. Restocking what they have going on. I like what they're doing. They're for the cubbies and the last ones here for segment. Two and number sixteen. The minnesota twins the twins. They got some nice tier. One talent. Shortstop royce lewis. Looks to be one of the best prospects in all of baseball and you follow him up with a couple right. Handed arms johan durant and jordan. Bliss cevik are going to be fantastic for them right. They rolled the dice this year. At twenty six with flame thrower chase petty. He's touch up to one zero two. You've got alex law and trevor lawrence. Cheb moved to the majors royce. Lewis is out for the year this year with an injury.

Benny montgomery Jaden hill thrace monteiro Nado blockbuster Aaron nado brandon marsh sam bachman kyran paris shohei mike trout saint louis cardinals matthew liberty jordan walker Michael mcgreevey marcello meyer baseman tristen jaren duran cardinals jeeter Brian bellows
