"Obama was like what's up lefty and this was like after. I hit fifty five I said Ooh I'm on Mike. Tell me and then we play over that night and thirty dollars like you had to bring back down like relax relax relax. Mike was definitely one of my own when he when he said my name. Is Mike. No My name like no me. I'm that do michaels one. But a our wanting to be here. He missed out on this. I got the first time I ever got the hang when he had to take part. He's both weekend. But so I go out. we get limo. I'm Larry Hughes. Though you know my old he bringing me rank team as he brings getting in limbo I man got in. I'm like like I was like I tell. My homeboy real next black. You heard them out here bathroom like we they are he like. I don't care I'm out to see I was taking oatmeal bells and shit. I'm I may I may outside the Strip club in Atlanta. That was that was killer last. We Stroke Club like of thirty in next day chain and I broke coming. Straight out of high school hadn't changed. I had room. You're an old school where you get. The diamond cuts anyways faking. I real time of if the light headed right. It might look like I. I had to sign on phone. Got The three. This is what I had in college. You know what I'm saying that I would kill him man. I was sitting Yeah tell us what would that he made bed now. Sitting now he got the real join. Big capital number. Three mound was a little baby three. He got the big boy all stupidest. Diamond night he would. They thought I was. The I know who I WOULD. I was some special I would say for so long. Around Linger Just trying to look around be seen him. Open the car boy. Slap I claim you as a straight out of high school. I do too I do I do too. I feel like you part of that fraternity that we got straight out of high school. Not College Boys. You know that went to College. Us STRAIGHT OUR HIGH SCHOOL GUY. What made you like set. A trend like this is like history. You the first person ever do what you did to go overseas and then come back like what made you choose overseas. Whether you're a college that you want to go to sure I was so sore going. Zona I also going to be a wildcat. But something happened with my. Sat scores and you know it was missing a lot of summer school. So you know a sign of a curl of Janda everybody father you know when it comes to basketball so sunny just called me was like I got a good opportunity for you You know it's GonNa be different. It's going to be far away from home but I think you can do it so he was just like Yo the slider Vegas and so he flew me and my mom and he was like just go out there and play at Joe Joe I think somebody who has a camp out there in Vegas and I was out there hooping and like I got picked up by like I was. I was either going to Israel. Italy or Spain am Israel was already out my mouth. Hell hell no so then. When they Rome Italy sunny was like I think this would be the best spot. So have you ever been overseas before? I never never been overseas but it but you know I was so excited because I think those two years that I spent. Okay help me lie. Be Away from home so I was just ready for whatever it even. I was just like Walmart away from home. Like why not with any doubt that US messing up your chance to go pro. Yes sometimes I used to think about that a lot when I lived there. Yeah why was it? Because I wasn't playing at all so I wasn't. They wasn't planned me at. I was only playing like three to five minutes. But what people didn't see is like the practices and like I had actually trainer there every day. That was teaching me everything about the NBA. That's why I came out with so really fire. You know. Ready to go You know my rookie year because I had the advantage already other players that you've seen overseas like who is not clear that he sees like he can plan lead Nice. What my first overseas. When I play Ricky Rubio he was good to me I just he was way more mature than a lot of us because he'd been playing professional basketball since he was like sixteen so he was one of the. You know actually one of the guys. That was really paying attention to a lot to think about Luca like now you see Luca. Come from over and yeah I mean I mean. I'm not surprised because the game in Europe is different. You know US ally going on It's a way different is way more physical so he is out there. Torn torn around. Now 'cause you know you can't touch him and he has the freedom to do whatever so I mean to be nineteen twenty years when when a Euro Cup and you know be MVP and all that. That's this over. Here is nothing so when you side go to draft. What team did you think you go to outside of the draft? I thought it was going to the next for sure because that was one of the workouts that I had circled and I was actually one of my best workouts that went in Milwaukee and then I guess mascots cows we just clicked and I guess he just like what I did. Grow Scott Scott Scotland. I mean I mean to me Scott was I was nineteen. He just gave him the ball. And just let me go like you know and to be a hard nose coast like years like everybody say you know saying that was rare. You know he really had a lot of trust me. You'll seven gay fifty five in the biggest league. There is fifty five my rookie year. If I got fifty five points I probably wouldn't be here today. I fifty five my game. La Oh my God like right for you to score fifty five you're seven game in the NBA. And this is the highest level that that's like you some type of validation like yeah. I'm I'm good enough to play on this level while always new. I was good enough. I I felt like you know some summer league and everything even before those games because my first game I almost had a triple double. Nah Seventeen Ninety nine in Philly and it was my first game. I was like all right like I'm ready but doing that in three quarters I was I was. I don't know man like I didn't really know what was going on. I was still young. I was still twenty. I was just like no. I got practice tomorrow and I know Scott Scott is going to be my ass like so. I really didn't have chance to really celebrate. Soak it in. It was more like back to work. What about now since she retired. And you look back on your success. You having a fifty five point guy to my career highs. Forty seven was forty four. She fifty-five not many players in the NBA double nickel off five but at and they like twenty assists right. You was there in Detroit game to watch him stats is like do you look back on it now that you so far removed from the game you know you can appreciate your accomplishment. Yeah I mean I played ten years as I'm only thirty so I can still go back and play if I want to but right now just doing something different in my life that. I'm happy with that. I've found another love and passion for but I don't know I don't know if it's over yet you know I still like I just wake up one day. And just start hoofing. Oh wait. I'm glad we got. We got when you came on your game. Like 'cause like you got us different us like US special to me and it was just like you know in this league. Sometimes you can be put in the best position and you can see sometimes you. You don't get the opportunity to get that spot to you. GotTa be Kinda role but you special to me like who did use to watch coming up. Us. I WANNA play like male Kenny. Kenny Anderson. It is the greatest guy ever like kinnear to say. I gotta tape of KINNEAR's in eighth grade from a friend and it was all his Georgia Tech highlights. I used to watch every day as sixteen. Vcr So you From the books like You know you travel teams play for a couple of different teams or so phone and you know the politics of the game. Was THEY WANNA city that US like I feel comfortable here I would have to say. I love Milwaukee for sure my first four years and you know. I grew to love Detroit. You know at first meant Stan. I don't think we really got along too well but when we went on. I run Before I tore my Achilles I found I just felt like I was coming into myself I figured it out. You know I figured out the game you know stand really started trusting me a lot and you know it was just running the table for me. I think two games out of that and then once I told my killy's the game like yeah the game of basketball. Yeah in Milwaukee to just like the game mentally just changed for me like the love of it just Kinda like 'cause a lot of stuff start happening to me off the court. Yeah and is this like your life family stuff friends and it was just more like all right. This is weird. Yeah you the first person to have their own shoe under Armagh here. What was that like like four company? And see where it now like Steph Curry. Nice you lose Star Right. Yes yes so yes. So that's what came with the deal overseas unarmored. That's one that I saw. An unarmored gave my shoe and then after my first year. Then that's when I got my first signature show. I think got two signatures. Who The black ice and the bloodlines. You kind of brought it over here. Yeah before that it was like the under amour. We must protect his own. Yes uh-huh Football. You basically brought it into rest. Yeah Christiaan Ryan drew those guys over there under armor man. We was man it was. It was tough because you know it's new. It was new and it was tough to get people to buy into it but Of course you know. Sinus Steph was such a such big accomplishment for them and you know the the company has grown. How was it for you to be hoping in New York at the guard after the Achilles thing did all the Rehab? You know what I'm saying. Gotcha bag right man. The garden was fun. And you had those where you bought it. Yeah you know actually I I liked. I liked playing in the triangle. It was a it was actually all right because I you know I understood it but I don't know it was just I guess just the outside of it like the outside the drama everything on melon field at that time and it will just took a lot of distraction away from team from what we need to accomplish You know Derrick rose over there. That's trying to you know. Come into coming back to and everybody. So we're all trying to prove ourselves and then I just felt like that little drama right there just Kinda. Just you know just took a lot of energy off the team tug about this. I know you did. You went to the Rucker Yeah and went and put up because he big on New York basketball and the being in Mecca in the energy. Talk about you when you went to rucker. Did you get a nickname there? Yeah they call me like the equalizer we do like but not New York. I mean New York basketball. I mean you know. Ask everything back in those days Playing at West Fourth Showing up you know what I'm saying. Just pick up games those times. We're like amazing. Then they had elite twenty four then at the ABCD camp back in the day in New Jersey and then they used to take a bunch of US. Oj. Billy Walker as to take us and we used to go playing the King Dome in a Rucker Park like after the The term was over Jay Z. Would come in his may back and stuff. It was crazy crazy times back then with sunny crazy talk about the influence like right now like you part of the group and even after you like right away basketball is like thriving saying with show with how many individual players are got across the you know the level of them you know superstar star type players. Talk about the impact of Paul Pierce van. Davison Andre Miller had on the whole La unified community. I was saved from you. Know all of the guy you know all the guys talking system but I feel like those three guys were three to zero g type guys. That came before. Yada of set the table because before I mean you had shine my class before that. La was kind of looked a solved San. But I feel like Paul be d dray and Deontay shine even right behind him in Montclair. Tae A lot of respect with us. He wasn't seen as soft any of that. He was a real boy so I would say. Those four guys had a real impact on changing the way countrywide. Our seen as a as a basketball community. I mean I just feel like the reason why L. A. Basketball so good because we were young. I mean you I think. Myself Damore Rosen. Paul George Russ Russell Westbrook James Harden we all young going to seeing Tyson Chandler and seeing you guys in high school so it was different like what we seen so when we got older you know going to the real run going to the league and things like that. We were young. It's like yeah like that helped us out a whole lot. You know seeing that. Cnn You guys. Were you know. Plan FOR THE CLIPPERS. You know when you came to La and start doing that and we used to come to Westchester and all that don't think forever and autumn in automated back then later you know what I'm saying like. They had a big effect on us that gave.

"Needs to be more like three for seven forty seven surge needs to like pour into or three like he didn't game seven there. Then you need you need. They need these guys to knock down shots. I know it's very simple. It's very cliche, but they're gonna get open looks and they have all. Series long for the most part. They haven't knocked them down in a lot of these games to have any chance of upsetting the bucks here. And I think a lot of people think of it as an upset if they do move on. They have to hit the shots because I think they'll get them. Get them so much focus will go to cli- can these other guys step up and help them out. Somebody has to hit some threes. They weren't reliable in that last series. They just weren't and something that wasn't reliable for the Sixers in that series was drawn detail. Yenisei Gupo looking good looking strong. I don't see any issues with him. That's an upgrade. I think you have to worry about that. Google is going to be out there all the time. And then when he goes to the bench. Unlike what happened with the Sixers is that the bucks, get better. If this is a battle of the business that happens again in this area because I mean that shocked us all it's not it's pretty rare. When you're MVP goes to the bench and your team starts, ripping off these eight nine runs, and you actually do get better. I don't happen again. I think the bucks pinch will crush the raptors bench most likely if it's a battle of the benches, but that's a huge win. If if there's an actual battle happening, right? That's a huge win for the raptors bench. They were horrid last less route. So if yes, if there's any sort of resistance from the rafters bench, so that's big. Yeah. They probably won't be a positive, but I don't know this is going to be a tough series. Well, let's see the predictions where everybody's leading. Whoa. Brandon jennings. Shut up to Brandon Jennings train legal with the Brandon Jennings. Kodak? That's like bucks in seven interrail. Hopefully, not but being a real. I am mad biased. I got a province of Canada sweater on for crying out loud. You think I'm picking against the raptors right now, absolutely picking Toronto. What is what does that? Even if I'm wrong, you're going to go to say represents he can to go to it and lock it in a home game six when the raptors will close out this series, though in place when you go home. Go all around me ten years of your career. Read and write. I would come back with the Knicks actually picks that more. Welcome back to the show the NBA draft lottery takes place tonight. NBA proposes lowering draft age to 18 amid Zion Williamson injury backlash

"Design injury reverberated all over sports and in the league. And allow players tweeted about it, including Danni who simply put it with four simple words, go play in Europe. What is he trying to say there, he stating the obvious? But the difference is if you look in the mirror it's easier for Luca to play overseas because he grew up there, and he gets a chance to do it while he's thirteen fourteen fifteen years old as a high school prospect the best trajectory overall. And I said it this is what ninety eight percent of players actually, do it is to go to college. I know the ideas should be like tears, Ferguson. He went over school. He went overseas. Everybody forgot about Brandon Jennings. Did it as well? There have been players that have done it. And it is available to you. I'm not going to advise the player to play in the G Lee. No. So if you got a chance to go to a major college play big time basketball, get better every day be on a big state and increase your market value. The last time I checked how much do playing at the university of Michigan being a member of the five help value would not be sitting in that chair right now if you did not go to Michigan B member of the fep also Zayn Williams win played for Olympia, close or whatever we would not be talking about right now, if he exploded a shoe playing in Madrid, we would not be talking about the exposure that comes with the college system, and you know, the broadcasters that broadcast those games like us make it such that it is advantageous for a high school prospect who go to college instead of other option, those days could be separate but equal they're gonna be people argue with what you just said and talked about why the player brings value to college and not the other way around. But those things don't have to be mutually exclusive. The thing is out of high school. You should be allowed to enter the draft. Go to college there should be. So former revenue share says that doesn't take place at least holes in coverage. So now all we do is debated for publican sumptious.

"Would you try to recoup the money from your child that did that I would not try to recoup the money? If I were that guy, I would've never gone on the radio. I wouldn't tell my parents. I wouldn't tell anybody else. I'd I'd let that be my own secret. What would be your reaction if you know several decades after the fact your childhood? It finally cop to doing that which you laugh it off because so much time had passed. So would you be legitimately angry because this was a house you were trying to sell now. I would have I would laugh at off. I mean, I don't have time to worry about stuff that happened that long ago. Yeah. I mean, you're busy worrying about Reggie Jackson in mid range jumpers actually, not worried about that right now. Either. His boy. Now, what are you worried about right now? What are you worried about right now other than the fact that people know no one in the world can look at your costume as as your dresses gritty today. That's that's concerning me, but other than that nothing. I have nothing to worry about right now. All right. Well, I love I love it when you're not coaching San, and I'm sure you're probably happy because that's your profession and reached the top levels of that industry. But man, I'm just so happy for you. When you're not coaching because you seem happier. Your voice sounds a lot healthier. Yeah. My wife feels the same way. She's she likes me a lot more when I'm not when I'm not coaching. I happier. I'm less stressed. So yeah, there's a lot of people feel same. What you do? Yeah. I just I was genuinely worried about you. You've had a lot of tough injuries there in Detroit and never seem like you guys could could shake some of the bad luck. And I was like man stands got. Got to be pretty miserable right now. Yeah. There were times it was tough. But but overall still a good for years a good challenge to have. And you know, I still watch them going forward. And and see how it goes. Yeah. We're always going to have that Brandon Jennings wrong. I'm always going to talk about it. You guys with the best team in the league for like about a ten game stretch. Yeah. Brandon played about as good a ten game stretches a point guard could could possibly play. And then it was unfortunate that he tore his achilles. And really for all intents and purposes has never really made it back. He's had a couple of cups of coffee in the league. But he's just never made it back and be able to play. And that's that's unfortunate because he's a guy he was streaky. But the guy loved to play basketball as much as anybody I've ever been around you you've coached a few teams in the league. What what goes through your mind when these teams play each other because you're? You're rooting for the pistons has you just mentioned I'm wondering like is there one team that you identify most with? I would if I had to guess, I'd probably say Orlando. Yeah. I mean, look at I'm at the point now where I just when I'm not coaching. I'm sort of just rooting for people that I know. So, you know, for coaches, you know, Eric in Steve Clifford in Orlando. And then I've got assistant coaches in Oklahoma City. Minnesota Denver rooting for those teams. And then players last night. I was watching the clippers to see, you know, Tobias Harris and also Oklahoma City because of a former assistant and Detroit, obviously all of those guys we brought in and coach. So yeah, I'm just sort of rooting for individuals people that I have worked with are there. Any individuals players coaches? That you're rooting against. Now. There's really not I know the look there's I'm not saying that I love everybody..

"Podcast. Follow me on Twitter at Dane more NBA. Here's my plugs, Greg. Had our Twitter handles at the end. Not quite them out on Twitter content from us things, legitimate media, NBA person. So, okay, we're going to dig out on the bucks. The big change for them. Obviously, since last year is Mike, beaten holder is now their coach players lost Jabari Parker so far is the only sure one, but they're at fourteen players after adding or sunny Lee Silva, and brook Lopez demand significant time at the foreign five. Just this week, pet content was added, and of course she's a draft. They anted Dante Davidson's. Oh, so I have them now fourteen players with guaranteed contracts, Tyler Zeller, and Brandon Jennings have non guaranteed contracts Jennings reportedly originally had a guaranteed date of July one, which is when the technically the new NBA season begins, but they seem to have agreed to push that back. I don't know if there's a new date or if like a lot of players without guaranteed contracts, it's just. Whether he makes the cut down to fifteen players or not, that very well could apply to Zeller in Jennings. So also they still have cap holds. It appears for Jason -tarian Sabbah's Muhammed I would expect Mohammed will not be back. Terry just depends on if they wanna use the last spot on a vet that can help out or if they are looking more and more and more functional player. So some decisions to make the edge of this roster lassie's than forty four to thirty eight seven on the Eastern Conference lost in the first round to the Celtics, seven games, office of writing. Seventh study performed quite nicely on that in the court defensive rating seventeenth. And we think about the athletic profile, the physical profiles, the players on this roster that certainly doesn't meet with probably even expectations they have of themselves for the season. They did fire their coach halfway through the season net rating fifteenth. So they were from that measuring point acquired average team eighth in philadel- percent of six. A true shooting percentage. So they shot the ball. Well, we've discussed the hip before, but there are twenty nights defensive rebounding ratio. And I talked about how much you are sacrificing by having a player that's exceptional in transition like John is and be one of the worst teams. The league defensive rebounding I feel like you're punting a lot of advantage that you could have. If you were a stronger rebounding team, only six players had three hundred transition possessions or more last season Jaanus LeBron Ola depot, Katie Russ and strangely, Josh Jackson, somehow he does like the grab and go when he rebounds the ball though, and you had the best points per possession. One point two just ahead of LeBron one point one, nine of being a head of LeBron that anything is impressive. So about what they could do, they could actually read on the ball and defense. They were third instills, say, took risks to get that number of transition possessions and just. But just thirteen points off turnovers that didn't make a lot of that six fast-break points opponent as few as three point three pointers allowed. So they really addressed opponent three point volume. That was a big adjustment. They're looking to make last year they did, but they continue to give up a ton of corner threes opponents fourth-best percentage. In three point attempts tied with the hawks and they hired the hawks coach from last season who gave up a ton of corner threes. So before we dig on on the roster changes and the voices out, there have been quite critical, the Ilyasova contract. I don't think that question is fine. They've added shooting at the four in the five with those two players but committee to two full years where they did seems unnecessary, but we'll get into sort of their how their rotations going to shape up and how they play. Let's talk for a minute about. About what we expect to see differently playing under coach booth older. So we know what rotation they had most of the year. There were some changes at the end of the season defensively, or the did more switching, and we're, we're taking fewer risks, and it seemed to get them back into that Celtics series at the Celtics kind of made the adjustment to the adjustment to help them get the wind..

"Yes hello yes hi justin i i was going to fight not what's your take on bendon jennings being inactive today i don't i don't think any of us were were surprised by man you knew when they signed brandon jennings to lose ten day contracts and then for the remainder of the season it was basically to keep the seat warm while matthew delvin delvin malcolm brogdon were out so if you had him active today or played him who were you playing him over who are you giving minutes to him over i would have certainly see he he's one player can even for short bursts of time can take over getting heavy really needed thinking outside the box and that became a nonissue because he was active shabazz was an active active but he didn't play but brandon jennings is given bledsoe was enfold trouble not playing that well they could have kept dropped down if necessary in the shooting position and instead of terry running the point or something like that i think brandon jennings on his day even today can provide a phillips you know well well it's it's simply a pecking order thing and that this is jason terry twelve time in the play of thirteenth time the playoffs you're going to give those minister jason terry there's a lot of trust there malcolm brogdon back now malcolm brogdon is one of your five best players you're not going to give minutes would've gone to malcolm to brandon jennings and as we mentioned with the playoffs rotations tighten up and you see more minutes i mean eric bledsoe is a guy you want on the floor for thirty five plus minutes so once you get down to that there's just no space for brandon jennings in a part of that too as you mentioned to me shabazz muhammad was active but brandon jennings being inactive has a lot to do with the bodies to at some point you have to protect yourself and shabazz muhammad is going to be active because what happens if a wing player goes down of a point guard goes down if eric bledsoe goes down you still have jason terry you still have matthew della vedova yard it's that can run things chris middleton can run things so i mean that's the reason why it really shouldn't be a surprise that he was an active here.

"Pending obviously when you're on a contender when he was on the miami heat for example when he won his championship he's not focusing on you know other teams but for a long time he would talk to reporters and other people about the houston rockets and made it pretty clear that he still followed them as a secondary team um you know it's it's it's not uncommon for that to happen in the nba because these players at they don't just lose their lifetime allegiance to a team because they were drafted by someone else obviously that team gets bumped number two but they still have some feelings for that team it's natural so aside from rooting for the team what about like because it's actually really flooded so all ron our chess and brandon jennings so that you guys that come to mind that have had bad debt ties against the knicks yes that doesn't make a point the nick the knicks passed over each of them you know what i mean so just an interesting kind of segue off of that is i get guys root for certain teams and they also like hold other teams and contempt you know what i mean and they lose just twenty cause rot run our tests always always always has some but say about the knicks even when he wasn't playing in new york no that's a great point eight it goes to is i think the end of there're you follow them and you're you're a fan from a distance and eventually maybe even sign with them we see that often where uh you know guys gore their hometown team and and not even a bigger examples either aware um you know everyone makes a huge deal abhran going back to cleveland door.

"This is somebody that doesn't have to look over his shoulder as much as he did before you think about carmelo anthony and kind of the big presence in shadow that he creates for a team but also even last year derek rows of the real time that you got the secret step signed last year's of playing with brandon jennings some of those more interested in getting him the ball than taking his own shot and now this guy's out here there is literally no peer of his on this roster at this point and so it's his to kind of winter lose and you're not seeing him split shot the thing that i saw when i covered the nixon covered his first season there was just how dominant he could be for certain stretches of the game and then just go seven eight nine ten possessions without even touching the ball in the fourth quarter that's not going to happen any more and i think now like a set win or lose he's going to have the shot to take on like before right and so like a big part of that is the questions were does is his framed in a hold up for for the pounding of he does play the whole game like that just dominating and it's just six games that he's had to do this so far but his scoring load is ridiculous so he's already just way over his old usage percent but if we're not using that because like he has a reload turnover present because he's not really handling the ball he's just like a more traditional just scoring big man at this point which is fine he's 22 um so if we're just going by how much he shooting how much he has to shoulder for the scoring he's leading the league light by a mile with like thirty three field goal attempts for 100 possessions which is essentially russell westbrook last season i i agree totally kyle with the idea that we've got to see how he holds up because when you look at his rookie year and that again it last year.
