The biggest game on Thursday night schedule was a Big Ten showdown between Purdue and Maryland. The biggest question could Purdue get back on track after losing at northwestern on Super Bowl Sunday. The answer was no. Final score Maryland 68 perdue 54 Purdue trailed by as many as 18 points before losing by 14 so the boilermakers are now one in three in the past four games with all three losses coming to sub 15 Ken pom teams, dead leg on a scale of one to North Carolina. How concerned are you these days about Matt painter's team? How about a three, but sub 15 Ken pop teams? That seems like a stretch for qualification there, GP. That's called a fact. What I just did what I just, the words that came out of my mouth were effect. I know sometimes people who listen to this podcast, they don't like facts. They don't like facts, but that was a fact what I just told you, three losses to sub 15 Kim pump teams. Not necessarily the most disgraceful thing in the world. And they're all reasonable in terms of competition because Indiana northwestern and Maryland are all tracking to the tournament and with northwestern and Maryland, Purdue's actually produced providing its laying groundwork to make that happen by nature of getting wins over the boilermakers. And yeah, through the past four games for Purdue have been on the road and all those three have come in losses. And for Purdue, the good news is three or final four are going to be at home to Ohio State, a really rocking one next weekend, Indiana is going to come to town and you'll close up against Illinois. The road game is against Wisconsin. So here's my get to Maryland, but real quick on Purdue. I'm loving this. You know why I'm loving this? Because people are going to be so damn eager to fade this team. Go ahead, get involved. Go ahead. Dismiss this team. It's Purdue. They never went in the tournament. They never make friends. Go. Go. I don't need you, okay? This is exactly going as to plan. In fact, Purdue don't even win the Big Ten tournament. Do me a favor. Get dropped in the semis. Still have, I have the same amount of faith in this team to make the final four as I did a week ago two weeks ago, three weeks ago. Losses were inevitable. No, it has not, it was never separated from the rest of the sport. I still think that Purdue is capable of winning the national championship. I still like them as much as almost anyone to win four games in the NCAA tournament. It's gotten tripped up here. Some of the guard play, the youthfulness, the size, the athleticism, hasn't been exposed to sure it has Edie been less than what he's been absolutely having said that he's still the FrontRunner for national player of the year. I'm still not stepping off that. And I'm still not stepping off Purdue is going to win the Big Ten. I said it was a mortal lock a month ago. I'm staying on that as we talk this morning. You're standings read, Purdue, 12 and four. One game behind your northwestern wildcats attendant 5, it's incredible. And then behind that, we have an absolute log jam with Maryland, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, and Michigan state all with 6 losses. Rutgers in Michigan, one game behind there. Don't think northwestern's gonna catch Purdue in order to share the Big Ten title. Northwestern still has three of its final four on the road included in that is a home game against Iowa. They've been playing well. So those are my thoughts on pretty. I do want to talk Marilyn, but any rebound of what I said, do you want to dispute? Do you want to agree? Do you want to vehemently disagree with my stance that remains unchanged on Matt painter's team? I'm less confident in Purdue today than I was, say, two weeks ago, but I do still believe the boilermakers are going to win the Big Ten, and I still do things that Edie is going to be the national player of the year. And I still do believe that Purdue is capable of, yeah, going to a final four for the first time since 1980. And also winning the national championship, but they have come back to earth a little bit. And let me ask you this because you mentioned two things there. The guard play has fallen off a little bit. Particularly with Fletcher lawyer, who was just not shooting the ball well at all. In these past three lawsuits. And Zach Edie, who is still amazing, but not as amazing as he was for much of the season. Are those two things connected? Maybe a little bit. I think they certainly could be. I think a big reason why Purdue is done what it has done or not done what it's done is teams are effectively doubling Edie. I think Edie a little bit. I'm not saying he's in his own head, but a lot of this was coming on when I sat down and interviewed him less than a month ago. He is capable of handling this, but as it was as he said in my feature on him, it was starting to feel surreal that this was actually all kind of happening. And so maybe there was some internalization there and he's just going to get through this bumpy patch and then we'll look up in a couple of weeks and, you know, I wouldn't surprise me if you just got a couple more 34 and 20 games in them. It just wouldn't. With freshman guards, I just think this is inevitable. Like they've never played this level of competition, particularly because they weren't 5 star players. Now Braden Smith has moments. He's unafraid and I still think they've got a lot of big moments to come. But yeah, I think there is something to that, but I will add, and I know that you'll agree. I know that painter hasn't made a final four yet. And I'll have something. I talked with him about it when I went out to Purdue. I'll have a story about that kind of stuff. Sometime either later in February and March. But there are a few coaches better I think equipped mentally to handle this kind of stuff. I just don't think that that locker room is out of sorts whatsoever, and I don't think that Purdue is teetering on a cliff. I just don't. If anything, you know, in the past week I've heard more and more either written or talked about television shows podcasts about this is this really is the new normal in college hoops. We don't have dynastic powers year over year. And there's something to that. I get that and maybe what Purdue hasn't been able to do is reflective of that. The loss, by the way, with Bama this week tied the record all time with 8 losses by a number one ranked team in a season. If we have Houston will probably be number one on Monday and a few soon ever takes another loss before we get to the postseason, we'll have a new record. So there is something to that. But I'm not, I'm not concerned about Purdue as a national championship contender, despite the fact that this lost three of the four, again, they're all tournament level teams, and if you watch the games, I give as much credit to actually how Chris Collins and Woodson and how I mean really Kevin Willard did a wonderful job and he even said I knew we were going to win this game. It's easy to say that and press her after GP after you've actually done it. But I believe him if you would have gone to him 5 hours before the tip that he would have had a high degree of confidence, they're going to pull it off and credit to him. They did.

I will tell you I have gotten lots of tweets or Facebook messages or emails from people over the past couple of years who have gotten genuinely gotten into a conversation about U.S. law and it leads to Elvis and then the other party is confused and it leads to like, no, look it up. I think Elvis really did go to school there. Like it leads to these types of conversations. So I don't know if you, I guess where I would call respectfully where I would respectfully call BS maybe on this one is that would you really decide to go to U.S. law? Because of Elvis Presley, would you really do that? Someone might be out there, man. I mean, maybe. Maybe, but I appreciate any time Elvis Presley gets mentioned with U.S. law. It makes me smile. All right, let's get to the first question. This is from Terry. He's an Indianapolis. He writes a longtime listener. My favorite story is the Bobby Knight Carnegie deli story. From GP. That's a true story. Gary talked a bit ago about how low ranked the Purdue team as according to the recruiting services. Do you attribute their success for the painters ability to evaluate talent, painter system, produce player development, or otherwise would be interested in the average recruit ranking of Purdue first the versus the rest of the top 25. I honestly think it's all the above. I think Matt obviously in his staff have a talent for finding guys who will fit their culture and what they want to do, regardless of where they're ranked. Matt has actually talked publicly about this many times. But the player development stuff has to be there as well. Like Zack Edie was not this version of himself last season. He has gotten obviously an undeniably better. So I really do think just about every explanation Terry throughout applies to Purdue. They recruit to their culture. They recruit, you know, regardless of the number beside the name and then they really know how to build and develop and turn it into something consistently good. And this is a season where they've reached the point where it looks like it's consistently great. I would say, if you want to say it's a little bit of all the above, that's fine. Obviously, I included this one because it's relevant more than ever with Purdue being arguably the best team in the country right now. You have remind me. I've got Yukon number one of my power rankings. You have pretty one. I've got Purdue one, but the only reason it's easy to defend, by the way. Purdue has more good wins than you kind of has. Yukon's just been over more overwhelming for its opponents. So it's easily defensible, but the truth is I have, I have Purdue ahead of Yukon, only because Purdue got there first. And then I wasn't going to drop Purdue from number one just because you blew out somebody else. As I've noted many times, Purdue and Yukon will stay one and two in that order until one of them loses. It is painters a really good evaluator. The system is good. He has and this is just my own perspective on this having talked to him about this a couple of times over the past. I don't know, 6, 7, 8 years. Has as much confidence and comfortability and trusting his evaluations in his staff's evaluations on the trail and not really paying any attention or having any care whatsoever to recruiting rankings. Now there are other coaches who take the similar approach, but when it really gets down to it and you start recruiting these players and then you find out who you may or may not be recruiting against. I think it's human nature and some coaches have shared privately that occasionally they might think, well, what am I missing here? Painter has a north star that he follows there. Smash the like button like your Brandon Davies, you have consent and there was some significant scheduling news announced on Tuesday night John calipari and Mark few jointly announced during a telethon, the Kentucky man's basketball program was holding to raise money to assist parts of the state that have been devastated by recent flooding. They announced the UK and Gonzaga. Gonna start a home at home series this upcoming season. They're gonna play November 20th, 2022 in Spokane. Thinking Zack is gonna return the game, play it ruff arena in the 2023 24 season. Strong Joe, how good is a Kentucky Gonzaga home at home series? Oh, it's fantastic. It's fantastic. This is exactly what college basketball. This is what makes college basketball so great. Two teams who are probably going to be top 5 pre season teams. They're top 5 preseason right now on your CBS sports top 25 and one. The venues should be fantastic. I really enjoyed kind of the video that Kentucky put out yesterday kind of announcing the news. John calipari teasing it saying few once the schedule a game, but that few is dictating the terms and then it was almost like subtension when they were kind of talking about it, saying, you know, callous and we're Kentucky. And Mark view is still kind of dictating the terms. If you kind of went back at him saying like, hey, you know, we were fine. Cow is the one who said, hey, want to play, and I just kind of agreed to it. So however it worked, however it went down. I'm very happy that it went down because a home and home between Gonzaga and Kentucky is going to be fantastic. Theater, especially next season, two really good teams. I mean, drew Timmy versus Oscar Shibuya is going to be a fantastic matchup very much looking forward to this two game series. It's awesome. It's two of the biggest brands in the sport. Like you said, two pre season top 5 teams. I've got Gonzaga number one in the top 25 and one. I've got Kentucky number four, both picked to win their leagues. So to projected conference champions, two of the biggest, like I said, brands in the sport. A current Hall of Fame coach and a future undeniable Hall of Fame coach. And two first team preseason all Americans on the court, in some cases, I'm certain guarding each other. It is the last season's preseason national player of the year drew Timmy. And last season's actual player of the year, Oscar she wet. So it is just awesome, awesome, awesome. But I will say, and I watched the video and it was, it was fun. But nobody dictates terms to John calipari about anything. And I think that's why John was half laughing, smiling while saying it, because he knows, and he knows Mark knows. And he knows anybody that knows the relationship between those two, knows that John is going to do this if he's going to do it. Probably on his terms. And that leads me to a point that I haven't seen anybody else make, but it is something that I noticed while watching the video. It's John calipari and Mark few sort of going back and forth talking about the launch of the series. And I couldn't help but notice the way they discussed it. Mark few said specifically that he's going to bring the zags to rup arena. Right. John calry never said specifically that he's bringing the wildcats to the McCarthy athletic center, also known as the kennel. He merely said UK will play in Spokane. Now, if you don't know anything about the history between these two coaches, you probably didn't notice that. But I did, because John calipari and Mark few, they have done home and home series before. And cow has always refused to take his team to the kittle. Now let me run you through some of the history. As you likely know, before John calipari was the coach at Kentucky, he was the coach at Memphis. And after Louisville, marquette Cincinnati and most of the other good programs left conference USA, his tigers were dominating that league, the same way Gonzaga was dominating the west coast conference. And so with that as the backdrop, John Calvin Mark few decided to play each other to test each other. It was a great series. Memphis and zaga ended up playing four times before Cal left for Kentucky. Twice in Memphis, twice in Spokane. But both games in Spokane were played off campus at the downtown Spokane arena, which is not Gonzaga's home arena. Now, obviously, Mark few wanted those games back then at the kennel. But John would not play there. And his logic was hilarious. As I remember, John argued that Memphis shouldn't have to play on Gonzaga's campus because Gonzaga didn't have to play on Memphis campus. Never mind that Memphis does not have an on campus arena. Memphis is home arena is FedEx form in downtown Memphis. Gonzaga's home arena is the kennel. On campus at Gonzaga. Logically, obviously, if consanguine didn't have to play on Memphis campus, logically,

"Now, because there's really nothing at night, I think the plan here, there's no we're not competing with an NFL game. There's no delays this time. Barring travel, I guess. Again, one game after another after its Illinois Indiana, which goes into Baylor at Kansas, which goes into duke of Carolina, which goes into Kentucky, Alabama, which goes into Gonzaga at B, YU.
