"World on fire but if you're just looking for a role player that can set the edge against iran that can give you a little bit of juice as a pass rusher that is functional in coverage. I know you a little up and down there last year. But i i saw some promising signs that you know if given more work in in that arena like he can improve their You know he's he just kind of a nice solid role player that can also give you positive value and special teams like third in the nfl in special teams tackles. He's a solid role player. The problem is again. He probably should be like the seventh or eighth guy in a rotation mostly play special teams in occasionally when someone needs a breather. Oh put jt amount there. He'll give you positive reps. You know for these four or five snaps while we wait on you know whoever edge rusher number one or number two to get that breather That's what he should be. But unfortunately as you just mentioned. Because we're the falcons and start. He's going to be our number two pencils and that's just the way it is. This is why brought you on the podcast for this particular topic the number of times. Erin that you. And i it just this short forty minutes the number of times you and i have said oh you know he's he's equality role player. He's equality role player. He's that is coming up way. Too much nest depth chart. And i think again like i love those role players that that's how you build out a proper roster but when those role players are playing or punching above their weight that's where things begin to fall apart and i love what you know to. Jt tm thing did last year for again for what his role is supposed to be. But my god if we're counting on him as you know one of the anchors for our pass rush this is yeah it. It doesn't feel like this is going well so the last thing. I want to bring up and you may not have any strong takes. I personally don't He's the only other guy. I think that's got significant playing time in the nfl. Emmanuel l'herbe He's outside linebacker. He seems undersized to me. Maybe i'm reading that wrong. But where do you see him fitting in if at all yeah i mean. We signed l'herbe or resign ellery because he was an undrafted free agent for two thousand eighteen. I had to go back and listen to some podcasts. From the summer of twenty eighteen to be like what was i saying about manual and it wasn't a whole lot. Does it say about him because he just didn't necessarily make a huge impression on me that summer combing through my notes and whatnot So i'll be curious to see if he does get work at outside linebacker. He was an inside linebacker Previously has been the bulk of his time. Playing middle linebacker for me. I guess i'm expecting him to sort of fill. The role that brandon copeland was expected to fill as backup inside linebacker. Now that due to the release of barky vs mingo In the private issues with dante fowler. It seems like the falcons are giving brandon copeland a little bit more run as an outside linebacker which is a role that he's previously performed at a reasonably high level. Like when we talk about the lack of proven pass rushers on this team. If you're looking for someone other than greg. Jarrett or dante fowler. That has had more than like four sacks the season and more than thirty pressures in the season brennan couple is the only guy that did he did in twenty two jets linebacker in their three four defense so again a guy that previously our backup middle linebacker now is technically offered most proven pastures so again this becomes a broken record. And it's like as you say. The falcons heavily like the point is like they have guys that are legit. Nfl caliber players. Just don't have guys that. Are legit info caliber starters. I guess you would say yeah in terms of what this group is. It's a whole bunch of guys as as you said. And as i've said that in a on a normal unequality defensive line equality rotation would probably be the fourth through eighth guy net rotation as opposed to the top. Three in the fop. Just gotta have a one probably dante fowler. What we're realizing is instead of being the two that we paid him to be. He's not gonna he's really like third or fourth guy. I mean right at his best years Elsewhere he was kind of the third or fourth guy in la And then you're hoping maybe marlon davidson goes into that makes then you just have a bunch of guys at like. Hey man if stephen means or or emmanuel brandon copeland can be a halfway decent five look. Beggars can't be choosers in you know. That's always the phrase. I wind up saying when it comes to any discussions of the falcons pass rush choosers. So it is what it is. I got used to it. You know my hope. Is that next offseason. The falcons will have a little bit more money and we can sort of make this a non-issue moving forward but they see and Last name abroad beller but really the rookie. I think belongs in his last spot. We'll close out the podcast with this data combo. Ogundipe out of notre dame. I feel like don't you get that name better than jacobs atm. Even as i was saying. And i was about the mess it up as well so now it okay never mind. Don't ask me to say his name accurately twice. I get tongue-tied and i apologize to all the players When i do that stephen means i got your back. Then but open deja you know. He's i think there's some expectation again. Unrealistic he's a fifth rounder. He's a fifth rounder. Four reason that he's going to step in and be a part of the rotation he'll he'll undoubtedly be a part of the rotation but for me. I just i i feel like okay. He's a rookie. This rookies pass rushers it. That is really missed. Especially when you're talking about guys were drafted on day three. What kind of expectations do you think fans should have for. Ogan daisy as a fifth round outside linebacker for the falcons is here my expectations to be blunt about it is. He'll probably be inactive for most of the season under normal circumstances but again we're talking about the falcons. Here's who knows what normal is for them when it comes to their parish and they just may need all the help that they can get So that would be. My normal expectations is like this is kind of a redshirt year for oak dougie. He might get you know if there's injuries you could throw him in there. Maybe put him on special teams get a little a little. Bit of work there But not a whole lot to glean from this rookie season but as we just laid out like you know. What are the falcons alternative stephen. Gtm branding yeah. You might as well if there's an opportunity to see what he can do. Might as well get him the reps. I mean we're talking about atm. A guy who i mentioned has been on the Wouldn't on a normal. Nfl team a good nfl team as it were Not the falcons would be you know a practiced by player But you know he's gotten work and you can say it's improved his development That he's probably further along today. Twenty twenty one then he would have been on a quote unquote normal team Just spinning all that time on on the scout team in the practice squad for the last couple of seasons. So maybe you can take the same tack with ogundare. I think look you know like it may not necessarily lead to him being this difference maker down the road but if we can just get another sort of.

"That they don't have a lot of pure edge players that are good is maybe they can get some production from some of these other guys. Like brennan copen michael walker. You know we talked about john kamensky too but what do you think about the falcons using some these versatile players at edge to kind of bolster the lack of depth there. Oh i don't think they'll have a choice to just looking at At some of these guys that we have on the roster unless we make assigning. And i mean everyone's holding out hope for a guy like adjusted. Houston which would be great like you know. I'm all for it. I would very much welcomed that signing. But there's just so many question marks with this group and it's it's the question marks where were calling. Question marks as falcons fans on like covering the team and as guys who have a lot of hope and a lot of optimism and the best case scenario happening. But it's question marks also and that people who are looking at who aren't falcons fans outside of the team would look at this age group and say it's absolutely disastrous. Because right now you know you have dante fowler. Who a couple years ago was really really good to the point where The falcons gave him very big contract and i remember writing an article saying pretty much saying that. This is the make regret contract for dan. Quinn and thomas dimitrov. If this doesn't work out there they're going to be fired pretty much and it turned out to be completely true. But you know hopefully you can have dante fowler bounceback year and just like with kale migori. It's not a good sign That he's missing the start of training camp. Hopefully he doesn't have kobe like you said Hopefully vaccinated also hopefully but Definitely definitely right now. You're going to have to peace and cobb. You're going to have to cobble some pieces together. And you know brandon copeland shir like you know he has. He saw matt five the season before he could save from us I mean hey of the past years someone having five sacks for the falcons that will be A yeah yeah. That'll be second on the team. Behind the defensive tackle brady jared most of the year But yeah right now. The there's so many question marks in if if ballard does have another another disastrous season like last year. Then there's just gonna be no pressure on the quarterback unless grady jerk just goes out there and does it himself every single play. Yeah yeah i agree and you know it's it's going to be tough. I think for them to generate pressure. You know they're gonna be relying on creating a lot of chaos You know i. I think they're planning to be opportunistic. Not necessarily like an elite down down defense. And i think that's going to be really frustrating for fans because i think they'll have some games where they get to three turnovers and they look great. I think have some games where they're out there against a really good offense that they can't force into any mistakes that has a good offensive line and look if they've got a good offensive line with a good settled veteran quarterback aaron rodgers. You know they're they're not gonna get thrown off by dean pieces pressure. Don't give on glitz and creating that manufactured pressure at something that we were wanting to see with dan quinn for years and years and he just refused you going to rush for and he was going to do without blamed vanilla Covered three defense every single time and he was gonna match-up man on man and that just didn't work and he just didn't adopt and as a result he is out of here and he should have been out of your lot or a lot sooner than he was because as a result we had a full on loss year last season because arthur blank was too loyal to him yet. However it's gonna be it like you said it's gonna be nice and that could possibly propeller defense up. A couple of spots. If dean pees utilizes it correctly and i think he will because you know to might dow dean piece. He's been coaching longer than i've been alive a lot longer than i've been alive and i think he's going. I think this defense will be a bit better than their talent just because of deemed pieces coaching in his coaching ability. However that cute stuff though those blitzes that manufactured stuff it only gets you so far and when we get toward crunch time and if the team does possibly find itself in a playoff position. That's that's not going to get you all the way because at the end of the day talent is going to win out and being able to beat the guy cross from you one on one. That's what ends up winning in the long term. And that's that's what ended up winning the super bowl for the bucks last year. That's that's what you need to get done. That's not what the falcons have. And it's gonna be. It's gonna be a pretty painful rebuild. For the falcons. At least defensively to get to that point because it's not just a one off season thing it's gonna take multiple off seasons to be able to to build that kind of unit at least on the defensive side of the ball and i don't think that this offense is good enough to really hide those deficiencies on the defense the way it was an twenty sixteen for example the way the chiefs defense was a couple years ago when they won the super bowl. So you know. This team is at a bit of a crossroads in that you know. They can't really hit that reset button because of the disaster. The thomas dimitrov dimitrov left on the books. But you know you you have to be. You have to try and be competitive. And that's what they're going to do. But i think i've been the final results that will probably be a pretty mediocre team if you're looking at it objectively. Yeah i mean. I think you know. I know some fence talked about you..

"So so I do not put that in there. The next thing that I wanted to say was I look basically basically my criticism of Chase winovich, which trust me is in line with the internal discussions about Chase winovich are off old number one. He has not risen to being an every-down player at all this season. He had a prime opportunity early on in the season. He did have a really good game early and forget which game it was and then he did not play a lot and everybody was wondering why isn't he playing? Why isn't he playing right that continued throughout the season we have ended the season with Chase winovich his role on this team was as situational pass-rusher. He was never an every-down player that tells you everything you need to know right there about how the team views him. On a linebacker deficient team, so he didn't need to be he he didn't need to be exceptional to be an every-down player. He had to be possible because the other people they were putting in there in his stead. We're not pro bowlers by any means so he's playing behind John Simon shilique Calhoun when he's healthy Brandon Copeland lose out there like he's playing behind a whole bunch of people and write that tells you whatever whatever you see on the field whatever role a players used in on the field. That's where the coach is Bill Belichick, especially on defense Bill Belichick. God sees that player and he in his eyes Chase winovich never Rose to an every-down player why I asked the question why and what I've been told and this is this you can see this on film. He is not consistent on the edge he can he has not been they do not have confidence in him that he is going to do the right things on an everyday every down basis and so dead. That's where that comes from number to as far as his personality. Certainly. I've noticed things there was you know mugging for the camera and that was for Adam Adam richens who shoots for us. So he dragged psj.

"The Illinois state legislature, passed a Bill Sunday that would allow sports betting online and at the states casinos race tracks, and even places like Wrigley field United Center and Soldier Field on Saturday. The state Senate passed the measure leaving just governor debut Pritzker who has expressed support of the legislation to sign it into law later this month. In today's bay blocked. Too many times and sports we hear of pro athletes who've made millions in their careers. Go onto file bankruptcy or even lose all of their fortune, in their early thirties because of poor investment decisions or irresponsible spending while plane Kirk James linebacker. Brandon Copeland school graduate hopes to change this trend and educate, not only fellow athletes. But college student with his life one. Oh, one course. And Brandon joins us now to talk more about what he's teaching in Brandon. How did you actually come up with your life one oh one strategy? Yeah. Actually was driving around Detroit. How was at the time of Detroit, lion and jogging around Detroit with a few teammates? And we were looking at some real estate opportunities on one of the teammates in cars that and I wish when I was a student, you know, my, my college had a class for athletes at taught us about taxes and budgeting and buying you first house. They're probably would've saved me a lot of heartache in money, and that's a great idea, but athletes, don't just need that we all need it, you know, so and so because of this, you actually have an off season job. Every Monday is a professor at the university of Pennsylvania's black cultural center in a data analyst at Weiss multi strategy advisers on Wall Street take us inside both of these jobs. What are you doing? Yeah. Yes. So being a professor weekly, just preparing slides in all of that type of stuff in preparing lesson plans in flow. But for me would I was really trying to do is create a teaching environment that we all wished we would have or, you know, I won't speak for everyone personally, I wish I would have had been more classrooms. So, you know, creating a non-judgmental zone. I mean, how many of us have been in a classroom, and you've been afraid to ask a question, because you don't want to seem stupid or like you don't know the answer. Right. So I really tried to create a humble environment where we can share and how conversations and stuff in automatically grow as a at students. If you bring up a good point because I had touched on it a second ago in my late in about athletes, and financial problems. How often do you as an NFL player? See other. Players go through financial problems after their playing days are over. Yeah. I mean, we see it a lot, and I don't want to say, you know, a lot of people brought up the stat of eighty percent of players going broke after within two years of retirement and stuff like that. And, you know, that's another reason for my class in and for the ultimate goal in my class, which is to get this information, accessible to everyone at all ages. So, you know, I do understand that us athletes have had issues with this. We're just highlighted because we're in the news in our salaries of public, but the average person is having issues with budgeting and saving money. And that's why people hit the lottery and find a way to. That's why there's a curse with the lottery. So if you had some of these lessons as a middle schooler as a high schooler in elementary school, then who knows that the ripple effect that have on you when you're twenty some years or eighteen year old athlete Santa Anna? A Hugh Saana Mona's in changing your family and your, your legacies life. I was reading and I found the numbers on your savings strategy. Fascinating. Can you can you share those with the viewer of accent? What your strategy is? Yeah. So the numbers the headline is that I've save ninety percent of my money and only live off ten to be quite honest with you, even don't necessarily like the headline to be quite honest, which probably live off of less, and I never gave a headline think one of the things that I've told people from this class is, like, what I try to do as I analyze every single expense that I have. And like I literally can tell you every single penny that outspend per month in what is going to write. And then from there, I look at my lifestyle and I just wonder like him, I were things that I wanna do. More of where things that I can do less of but by just analyzing your expenses, one that you get a big picture of where money is flowing. And then you can take the next step in figure out how to cut or at to the things that you wanna do more and stuff. So what I try to do is I try to do the things that I love. I don't I don't it's not that I don't want for anything I try to spend money if I spend money as either on investing in myself in something for the future or is on some type of experience or memory that I'm going to have for the rest of my life. So as travelling putting a smile on someone's face giving to someone you know, those things that I cherish and things that really make me happy. So I'm just blessed. You know, simply put on just blessed. That's what I warned. That's what I look look to do. Hey, Brandon really appreciate you? Joining us today on hotel. I know several athletes in college players in college students. Can learn from what you are teaching them. Brandon Copeland joining us today jets linebacker multi-talented. "Welcome back running right through our number one. We are efforting Brandon Copeland. He is a member of the jets. Great backstory. We'll have that for you in a minute. Dear Rome slice. We are. Absolutely. Gutted and disappointed that the rebuild front office of the Lakers has not brought them back to immediate greatness. I mean, what could go wrong with Magic Johnson. And that agent who looks like Rob Lowe, Lonzo LeBron does incredible signings of guys like Rondo land. Stevenson, Michael Beasley, it's really going to make the holiday season awesome. I mean awkward yours. Jim boss. It. All sounds so good in it. Bring back magic bringing rob Pelinka sign. Lebron? The others will follow the more things. Change more. They stay the same. All right back in a minute. But has promised we're joined now by an NFL linebacker in an Ivy league professor thirty four tackles five sacks two passes defense with the jets last season. He was a three time all conference in three time Ivy league champion at Penn. He was undrafted in two thousand thirteen. He is the co professor of herbs one forty inequity and empowerment urban financial literacy at the university of Pennsylvania. Brandon Copeland is my guess, Brandon. Great to have you on the show. Thank you for joining us. How are you? I'm doing. Well. I'm great. I'm great so many things I wanna talk to you about boonies star right here when you were playing high school football at Gilman in Baltimore. And you start thinking about going to college playing college football. What kind of programs were interested in you in what? Juliette a pen. Yeah. I was recruited by a lot of d one AA program housing's, William and Mary New Hampshire's. So that's the schools would actually drove me the pen was the third the last game my senior season. My coach told me through me in kickoff return. I hadn't played kickoff. Returns rec league since middle school type of thing and one of my own teammates on my ankle. In pop I played the rest of the season. But we I was limping around and that was for me to wake up call that my parents to ride my grandparents are right in terms of you literally one play away from having it all taken away from yourself that for me maybe to go through school like Penn. Get a degree. And my grandfather he played in the NFL for eleven years. And he always said if you're good enough, they'll come find yourself at the the harder route football wise, but I wanted to make sure, you know, myself up for success in the future. Brandon Copeland joining us. All right, then so you get depend while you were at Penn you were doing internships in the offseason. What were the internships? And then what you take away from those experiences. Yeah. So I I worked on Wall Street at UBS, Switzerland. First summer, there was a rotational program. So I got to rotate throughout the Bank and then second summer there. I settled in on sales and trading so selling stocks finding good stocks figuring out whether we should sell them. We should buy them. And learn how to pitch them for me that ultimately just how we develop a understanding of how to research different names. And ultimately be able to do that for myself. So great experiences up in New York City. You know, as a college kid, it was it was awesome trying to balance that with training and stuff, but I wouldn't trade that for the world Brian Copeland. Joining us mean, it's amazing. And then you go undrafted in two thirteen you signed with the ravens, then they wave you. And then you signed with the titans and you're on their practice squad. At that point how much time were you spending on football. And then how much time are you spending on continuing to learn about business. And even doing some day trading on the side. Yeah. At that point. I was young and dumb. I was day trading in between meeting inbetween training sessions and and. You know, it was a hectic lifestyle for me. But I was young and thought that I could tap it all and and be the Ivy league football player that takes his money and multiplies it in the market and then. I've learned is it's a lot easier and better to go to sleep at night comfortable and be able to walk into a meeting comfortable by investing in things that I'm not worried whether they're going to blow up your down in the next five minutes because of some news. So so yeah, since then I've been more long term strategy and safer longer term investments. Still stock picking as I choose. But you know, things like I said I can sleep at night and not be worried that I'm. Mess up. My my network. I've never done it on their identity day trading. Sounds very stressful to me Brandon Copeland joining us. I mean, I mentioned the stats at the top. You had a really good year with the jets, but you were out of the league in two thousand fourteen and from everybody around you, it seemed pretty clear you had an excellent future in finance and business. You could've just said I'm going all in on business. But you didn't do that. How come? Yeah. I think you know, actually talking with my grandfather's. Well, he is one of those things where if you feel confident in your in football, you know, I it really motivated me to come back, and and come back stronger than before, you know, I think for me when I went out for my I was trending in the right direction and even on the verge of finally starting after a roller coaster ride of a career. And for me, I couldn't live with that with not going back and trying and and and I'm so happy that I did, you know, I never doubted that in my in my mind, but in that time what I did was just maximize that rehab and free time to just live. You better be a better son father kept up with family members? And then my wife, and I we started our real estate company. So I will literally maximize sound by just learning as much as I can about renovations. And the cost of stuff in and we ended up flipping five houses during the Tom that I was off alone. So I was trying to do something. But maximizing Tom nonetheless, New York jet, Brian Copeland. Joining us. I mean, there's so much to the story. And then when you were in Detroit, the story goes you in a couple of teammates were driving throughout Detroit looking at potential real estate investments once he made said that he would have loved to have had a class on taxes. Budgets finances. Investments and more essentially the things that he knew at that point in his career, but didn't know back when he left college. What was your reaction when you heard that? I thought that was an outstanding ideas suggestion. Hey, I remember talking about it and talking about how much money you would have saved if you had only known, right? And then extrapolating that idea and thinking like that's just not a athlete, you know, problem. That's a world problem. Right. That's just a people person problem. So I think athletes, we get it bad. Everyone talked about us 'cause you know, all these guys broken and all that stuff. But that's just because our salaries are in the news. So, you know, we're making, but the average Joe average person has problems with budgeting as well. So what we did was what I did was take that idea and just flush it out run with it. And figure out what a class like that. Actually looks like how to create a safe environment for people to talk and discuss these financial situations and scenarios and. And it's been going. Well, thus far. Were were midway in our next lesson. Talking about buying your first house and the cost of renting. And and my biggest goal like I said is you know, you look back on your life. And you know, five years down the road six years down the road twenty years down the road, you like you can a lot of people can point to a financial miss decision that they made and you might still make mistakes you're still going to make mistakes. But there's no reason why we had why we should not learn about those. Topics prior to us making these big decisions. It's the first time I learned about buying a house and be when I'm sitting down trying to purchase my first house for my, you know, my fam- right back the needs for thirty years. Bad decision. If I do that the wrong way, and I'm just learning on the fly. So so, yeah, it's been going great and looking forward to continuing just linebacker Brandon Copeland. Joining us Brennan, I wanna make sure they understand what's going on here. So you took that idea of that class, and you pitched it to pen. Now, you are the Cole professor of a class at Penn. I got to know what was it like standing up in front of the class and teaching that first class Toronto mater, man, nerve wracking right nerve racking. I think I think we Chuck the armpits on my shirt that day is probably more than more sweat than than on a game. You know, I I think for me it was. With a lot of things. I do I have a vision for it. And they're not I leap, and I try to see it through. So the biggest anxiety going into that was will my vision for this class for within here. You know, you have all those pregame jitters game, they dinners, and now it's like will these kids in my cool enough to hold their attention. My cool enough to make this thing conversational rather than the classroom sitting laptop, and you just get through it and you get to great anymore forward. Right in my in. My is the idea or have a plan the lesson. Well, enough to make it interactive making fun to make it a class that you take, you know, I would hope the most you've ever taken away from the course. Right. So it was it was a great day the classmate. Well, it started slow in and soon as picked up as we went along. I think they quickly understood I'm I'm a different style. Professor because. Very casual and and comfortable, and and and we have fun, and and we're still building on concepts. And and and just trying to learn. This one more thing about the class. It's not a class just for athletes, and it's not just about managing money. There's another element here. It's the history of inequity and linking social Justice with financial literacy for those who do not know. How do you see the relationship between social Justice and financial literacy, that's a great question. I think coming into being one hundred percent transparent, and honest was that's how I operate coming into the class. I did not I wasn't a fan of inequity seats, and the reason behind it was because I thought that it would deter all students feeling comfortable taking the class. I thought that some people might look at it like, oh, that's just a place for people of color or something like that. Right. That's going to be a what was me think as we've taken the class. I see that that is actually one of the most important pieces of the classic not more important than some of the financial literacy topics because. You start to peel back layers of why some people are stuck in certain situations. Right. And you know, for example. People have always been told to, you know, save up money put your money in.
