Branden Carlson, Utah race past No. 4 Arizona 81-66

"Brandon Carlson led unranked Utah to an 81 66 win over number four Arizona. I had to come out ready to go come out play physical. My team did that same thing as well. We were just prepared. Carlson went 5 for 9 from three point range and finished with 22 points as the U.S. handed the wildcats their first loss of the season. Roly Worcester chipped in 12 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists for the 6 and two youths. Arizona never led and was down 39 20 in the first half. When the wildcats shot 27%, Umar bolo topped the cats with 22 points and 7 rebounds. I'm Dave ferry.

"Likely to do it if any team outside the preseason top 100 Washington sits at one 13 at Ken pom heading in. Clearly Hopkins needs to have a really good season. I think that's obvious there. I do think this team has enough to win 20 or more games, keyon Brooks junior from Kentucky is the big time ad. And I think he's going to have a very, very good season. Jamal bay is back. He's a good player. He's just inefficient. He needs to be better. He needs to be he needs to be clearly more efficient. And then Washington state lost Noah Williams, who went, you know, he went across enemy lines here and he'll be, he'll be in the backcourt, starting there for Washington. He's kind of like how often does that happen? I don't know. Like you go from Washington state to Washington. That's like going from Mississippi state to old miss or from North Carolina to South Carolina. That's what it's like. It's a deal. Don't even get started on going from North Dakota to South Dakota. Yeah, just, you know, it's a good pickup for Washington. And so they got key on Brooks. They got Noah Williams. They've got some nice you know, these guys have performed for quality teams. I know Kentucky lost to Saint Peter's, but Kentucky is one of the best teams in the country last season and key on Brooks was a double digit score for that team. Washington state was pretty good last season. And no Williams was a part of that. Why should they finish 44th of Ken bomb last season? The problem, of course, is that, and this is why I'm a little skeptical of them, breaking through this year. They lost the top four scores from that team, and that's a lot to overcome. We're going to circle back at the end of this podcast. I had to put the tweet out about what's the better Carolina getting some interesting facts and opinions on this. So we will put a bow on that conversation after we go through the rest of these packed 12 teams there. Utah, I've got finishing above Arizona state and below Washington. But I am more aggressive probably on the youths than others. Craig Smith has been a pretty good head coach over the course of his career. And I think that he's going to get it figured out there. They've got this has yet another team where their best player is going to be a big. And that's going to be that's going to be an example across really like 40 teams across the country. Brandon Carlson is a 7 footer who is definitely Utah's best player. They will probably work from the inside out, but they do have a good versatile wing defender in Marco Anthony, who can guard truly guard one through four, and we'll do so, not on a nightly basis, but almost on a possession by possession basis. Smith and his staff really give him a lot of leeway to be helped defend our pickup defender. He is just as reliable as it gets. Utah is Utah and Colorado to me are the two teams where I look at the rosters and I'm like, what are we going to? What are we going to have here? Are you going to finish 6? Are you going to finish 11th? I don't really know, so it is a dart throw with the utes, but I'll have them, you know, I'll have them finishing 8th, and then I've got Arizona state 9. Yeah, I've got it. I've told you 5, 6, 7, 8. And then at 9 Colorado, added a couple of Ivy League transfers, lost the top three scores from last season, but pebbles pretty reliable. He is. I got him ten. I don't have him ten wanting, but yeah, I don't know GP. You've got him now. I got him ten. Yeah, Cal lost, it's top three scores from last season. And then making things worse there, Jalen zealous, who was the leading returning score. He had knee surgery back in the spring. He did not play on the European trip, Mark fox's indicated that he's almost certainly not going to be ready to start the season. So everything a cow was going to be hard anyway. It gets harder when that guy's not available for you for at least a portion of your non league schedule. So I've got Colorado at 9 cow at ten, 11 Utah. They were four and 16 in the PAC 12 last season. That was the worst record for that program in league. In like a decade. And then at 12 Oregon state, which was just, I mean, three and 28 last season, one in 19 and the fact 12 finished two 33rd at Kim pom. I don't know that any school in America went from a high like the high they had in March 2021 to the low they had really every month and 2022 to date. Correct. I got a thought quick on Oregon state, but just one thing about Cal, they have Devin askew on the roster. Devin ask you reclassified because John calipari asked him to then not use a Kentucky, okay? Then he goes to Texas, was just as lost in the mix of Texas as he was. I just hoping that Devin asks you a former top 40 prospect who is still relatively young, confined nice footing and build out a nice career in Berkeley, that's something that I'm keeping an eye on account. I have Cal 11, and I have Oregon state 12. Oregon state has not won in 20 22, okay?

"And that coach being so dismissively confident saying, no, no. That guy's going to Washington. His parents from the area, parents went to school there. The school there. Correct. Uncle played football there. So just to your point, specifically on that. You want to see how the fortunes of a program can really turn sometimes on a single recruitment? Palo band carrots on this roster, even if Washington has the season has last season, Washington the preseason top 50 team. But that's not where it's at because they don't have them. Real quick. I've got Utah and Cal, give it a season and a half for Utah, they got correct Smith in from Utah state. A bunch of turnover. But, but what do we got going on Utah? Who's back? That's right. Booth gotch is back at Utah. We love to see it. Boomerang transfer, spent a little time in Minnesota. Now he comes back home to the promised land under Craig Smith. I actually think he will wind up being a very, very important player for the running news this season, but I'm not seeing I'm just not seeing an NIT team here. Brandon Carlson, 9.4 points per game is the best returne. They've got 8 new guys in, but I'll go on the record with Craig Smith. I think he's going to wind up being one of the three best hires from this hiring cycle of 2021. I think he'll in this regard. It's going to pay off for a Utah's program more or as much as maybe two or three other schools because I think Craig Smith is going to last more than a decade at that program. I think you'll get to the second weekend, sweet 16 or better, at least three times for however long he's there. And again, just give it a little bit of time. This will be a bottom bottom third of the league kind of team this season. I don't think Utah necessarily will project as an NCA tournament team next season, but I think it'll be making that climb. And then by year three, I would expect Craig Smith to have this group in this program in the top half of the conference. And then at the bottom, I do have Cal. Now, if you want to make the case for Utah or Washington, I think that's fair. I think these are the three teams most likely to finish last. I'll go Cal. They'd lose Matt Bradley, who bolted for San Diego state, which for me just knocked the bears to the bottom. But almost everyone else is back from a team that went 9 and 20 last season. It was last in the PAC 12 and points per possession. Three point accuracy, effective field goal percentage defense, blocks and steel rate. So Mark Fox has his work cut out for him. There are signs that it's going to get better for Cal, but we try and give you transparency and honesty here. And it would be quite shocking if this group wound up being, say, 6, 7th or 8th best in the conference this season. At least for me, I projected as the bottom team in the league. But overall, pax 12 should have a solid year, but not a great year. I don't think this is going to be a conference that is better than 5th best overall in the country. We mentioned Jerry palm's got a projected as four bids. I.

"With people. Because we're like. Oh why don't you get it. It's so while you know not. Everybody has the same experiences we do. So we have to be patient with them to. It's interesting when at least your friends or family circles called you. They think that you know everything. Take probably who doesn't seem that. How does this. Why and how do i connect something to something else and although yeah with so much of changing technology and so many basis. That are moving. How do you keep track of what's happening. And how do you put them together. Pick the ones that are relevant when you're designing solutions. Yeah yeah i think a big thing is just kind of having that experimental mindset of being able to to try out some things and see what works what doesn't work and it's funny. This is a long time ago when i first got into this agile space. There's a guy by the name of brandon. Carlson than i used to work a little bit with back in i used to live in the mid west so in iowa which is a state kind of the center part of the united states and he reminded me so he. He said tom. When i start with a team i get them to kind of get their ideas out on paper and pen because what we what we were talking about. Essentially is like you know a lot of companies will say. Oh we're going to give team ex- we're going to give them jira so now. they're agile. well no just because you have. Jared doesn't mean you're agile. So he he had said this. I think this is important when we think about how we work. Sometimes for instance like if we give team jira we're gonna get. The team will adapt to the way things work in jira. Or if you have another technology for instance like i'm a. I've done a lot of java development my career you know java developments a lot different than some of the civilised programming.
