"Back in studio, you can catch us on Facebook live. We hope to continue that. Process going forward. Let's shift to some of the Milwaukee stuff. You're an attorney in Milwaukee. Milwaukee crime in general. I mean, you see this stuff every day up close and personal. I guess the big picture question is. Where are we? Yeah, We don't have a permanent police chief, or at least Uh, not an acting chief. We have a We have an acting shit. We don't have a real police. Chief. What? What do you make of all this? We as we see violence numbers going up, you see reckless driving become an issue unregistered vehicles. You see this stuff? You tell me where we at? Uh, crime is like the weather. I mean, crime is just the human condition. Well, we've always had it. I mean, you look in the Bible like those commandments. They're they're talking about crime, right? People breaking the rules for their own benefits or or joy just as the human condition But it seems to me In the last six months, things in the city of Milwaukee have gotten to another level of Truly shocking behavior. I I think a lot of the stems from, uh the switch to virtual schooling and the refusal to get kids in the school and the lack of supervision. And a lot of these kids in Milwaukee. We're just left to their own devices and started doing some pretty antisocial stuff. Um Which really disconcerting as a city of Milwaukee resident is what you said that the reckless driving for me is the number one to see it every day coming to work, leaving work. It's out there. And if I see that it's everywhere. Everywhere. If you drive in the city of Milwaukee, and you are stopped at a Red light. Um, you'll see people just blow through the red light because they're impatient. They think it's a video game. Uh, And it's scary because, you know, I think of this if you went down to Bradford Beach, okay, and you just had a pistol, nine millimeter pistol, and you just randomly shot somewhere on Bradford Beach. That that that bullet is lethal deadly. If it hits somebody, it will kill somebody. But it's only nine millimeters right is very small. You have a two ton vehicle going down Lincoln Memorial Drive and you decide to drive on the sidewalk, which happened three weeks ago. In the middle of the day. As Bradford Beak is just packed. Think of the people. You could just randomly kill for no reason, And it's kind of thrill seeking Of young people in the city of Milwaukee. And that's the type of thing that that really does hurt morale in the city quality of life. Makes people not want to live here. It gives us a bad name as an uncomfortable city, and I think we need more attention on it. Is this. A mayoral problem is that Mayor Tom Barrett, who has been on the show a million times, is it? He's not providing leadership when it comes to the police side of things or saying, Look, I mean, I was a big fan of chief Morales. I think he was doing a fine job and the fact that we now have Enter the situation where we can't hire somebody else. The process is messy. The fire Police commission is a joke, and in some ways we have elected officials delving deep sense of police policy now, and that's a lot of the post George Floyd. Impact. I'm not sure that we understand here in a city that's still in the top 50 as far as larger cities in the country. How do police ourselves And that to me is a big problem when I as much as anybody else promote this city? Yeah. Well, what was it 10 years ago, 12. Years ago, Tom Barrett embraced what's called broken windows policing and proactive policing. Which means you don't you don't do this hub in spoke where there's uh the police are in their squad cars and they're just responding to crime. What? Ed Flynn? Uh, frankly at the direction Tom Barrett did because he knew what Ed Flynn's whole worldview on policing was is get the cops into the street, You know, Don't be reactive. Be proactive. But there's been a political backlash against that. People don't like the idea of what's called Stop and frisk policing where the counts are trying proactively to find guns before they're shot. And and that type of thing. And and so in the last since Morales came around, they basically jettison that and they've They've gone back to. You know, there's a crisis. Send the cops there after the crisis, try to Investigate after the fact and you know it's not as effective but it is more politically feasible. Uh, in Milwaukee at this time that there's just a pull, push and a pull on this. You know, you can either let police police Or you pull them back, and I will tell you even though I'm a defense attorney. I have a lot of contacts in the police community here in southeastern Wisconsin and my cop friends are demoralized. They don't feel like they can. Be proactive because they don't want to be in a situation where they're not going to get packed up by the political leaders. If they have to go hands on with someone or if they got forbid, have to draw their weapon. And so it's a you know, this push and pull and and right now we've been pulled to the side of of over correcting. I think, uh, against police being proactive and I don't think the public we some do, but I don't think the majority public understands. How important this is to have a demoralized police department to having more difficulties recruiting new officers to just keeping the officers you have because we see mass retirements. I just talked to a sheriff. Yesterday, and he said, it's getting harder and harder to get people to come in. All of this is not a good trend, and then you mentioned some of the other ones on the other side. We have kids that are not artist school. We have kids that don't respect the laws, including traffic laws. A lot of time to get in trouble. That is not.

Don't do it While you're ironing your shirts, you might burn yourself. But one of the what other? Yeah, well, you could you could text and walk, I guess. Although I have seen people run into stuff on the street, texting and walking. I saw a dude He's a couple years ago. Now bang his knee and a fire hydrant and it looked like it hurt. That that was unpleasant. He dropped his phone. Well, so what every other dangerous behavior like lighting your grill while texting. A waffle irons Anything hot probably would be. Have you something to avoid? Okay? The sizzle in store cash contest. Texan word for this hour. The three o'clock hour is love. L O. V E. D. Love like I'd love to win 1000 bucks. I haven't revealed this wealth you and I need to talk off the others. There's been a slight change in contest rules that I thought we didn't need to participate in here. W I said, but we might want to take advantage of the changing rules, which we'll talk about that next week. So it's really hot this weekend. I'm playing golf really early tomorrow, like 6:30 a.m. would be done by, you know, by what, 11 or earlier so before the real heat wave hits Heat index up to 100 degrees. Here's something you're not going to be able to do. You're not going to be able to go swimming at bread for beach or self Shore Beach. Not that you would, would you Let's say that. Let's say they're saying well. This. According to today's T M J for their website. Bradford Beach closed today going to remain closed through the weekend. It was closed original yesterday. Hi bacteria levels, Paul because it will be a big rain right on Wednesday. So we got a lot of rain and well, what does that mean? It means you have tens of millions of gallons of of blended human poop. You're going going down through the river into into the lake at various various places. Now I find it extraordinarily convenient, however. That now that the city of Milwaukee has this mask order That the beaches will be closed because I'm telling you if it's 90 degrees And people are at the beach that mask order is goingto undergo a pretty good test. Ah, pretty good level of scrutiny Will people bad or not, And if they won't orbit will that you know the health Department be down there scolding people or kicking him off the beach with? I mean, those are technically parks. That's the sheriff's department with the sheriff's departments and squads down there. Forcibly masking people instead of like throwing him to the ground and cover them. They throw over the sand to put a mask on him. For Ah, formal of formal masking of you. Don't take that off, maybe stapled to the side of The uncooperative people's heads in the four o'clock hour. We're actually going to talk to infectious disease expert Dr Mary Beth Graham from the Medical College of Wisconsin about these masking mandates that are That are popping up all over the place. All remarks that Dick Bacon will be rolling over in his grave for Dick Dickey's have Dick Fried himself. Dick is an interesting character. I've actually spoke to him a couple of times, but he used to sit that reflector. I mean, that was he was getting in on all sides. Which reminds me speaking of first of all, I'd You're never going to see me at a local beach. I barely take off my shirt and a beach 1000 miles away, like in Florida, or no one knows me. But I do want to make a statement about something and this is strictly to my generation. The boomers. No, I'm I'm I'm a younger boomer. I was born in 1958. The older boomers were born like beginning in 1946. These people are in their mid seventies now. There is a certain look of some boomer males and these were the guys that were born right around 1950. Or so I would say so. They're probably about 70 maybe late sixties early seventies somewhere between like it's a 48 and 52. I've seen a couple of these guys that looked generally the same. These are like old aging hippies. So here's what you get You get a guy walking down the street in either jean shorts or gym shorts. No shirt. Bald on top with a grey pony tail in the back, and the kicker is usually wear room glasses. Now..

"We need to be focusing on it when you think about best practices there a lot you know I I think that folks forget what kind of a hidden gem walkie is you know even when you go down to our you know Bradford beach right Bradford beach is one of the best beaches you can go to here in America and it looks better than going to some of the other beaches that are some of the the biggest tourist spots here in the country and so you know there are things that we we have to do a better job of patting ourselves on the back and giving ourselves kudos for but it's not to say that we don't have challenges but you know these are all opportunities that we have to take advantage of that that that we have to find ways to make sure that you know folks are set up for success within market currently and in the best way to do that which is what my campaign is is is built on is is is is building bridges bridge bringing more people to the table more diverse voices in and it necessarily folks who just agree with me we have to have people who are willing to challenge the status quo we have to have people who are willing to have hard conversations in order to move this forward you know we talk about you know marquis you know every year we've heard about us being one of the most segregated places in the country and we have to talk about that we kind of got to kind of have to go to our own twelve step program in order to find ways to to to to to solve it the problem but you know we can talk about all the things as bad we have a lot of great opportunities and great things happening here across the whole county we most definitely do David we could take a quick break I want to bring you back we'll talk more about your your campaign now in the upcoming election but first our break this is the follower Latino program coming to you the news talk eleven thirty W. I. S. Heris not not now the kia dot as she literally called me upset I want to come work for me and I was a legislative aide and work for at the County Board and she won state Senate issue brought me up to run to run the office and I worked in the office is a policy analyst community outreach director of the four years and then I I got bit by that book to run myself and so and and in the summer of twenty fifteen actually announced two one for a city alderman in the city of Milwaukee seventh district and I was running against the incumbent the company decided that he wasn't at the at the last hour decided he wasn't running anymore and then I had other elected officials happen race I lost their primary by less than a hundred and fifty votes twelve hundred fifty votes about a grace of god almost a month later the seat there are currently holding a state representative opened up and I ran for this seat and one in a three way primary in so just thinking about that I didn't wait for somebody to say you should run right and even with this account executives race I didn't wait for somebody to say you should run you know I I have worked with was Chris ably before we agree on some policy we disagree on policy but the one thing that I can say I appreciate about him is that he was willing to at least listen to the issues at hand and when he decided that he wasn't running anymore I had to I had to make a decision and I talk with my wife of for about four days I wasn't even in Wisconsin I was actually out of town in Pittsburgh for conference and it just kept going back and forth with her and and and praying about it and I got to a point we're almost felt like I was calling her to try to talk me out of it and then the day before I I'm I'm I'm I'm heading home from Pittsburgh my wife says David if you don't run me you are going to have problems I was just like you know it okay all right because she understood understood a word by before we got married my my ambition of of want to stay in politics in the work that you know there is some impactful things that we're doing in state government in county government and every minister probably across the state and for me I've always been a local a local guy you know when you talk about making the the biggest and baddest impact for the people you can do that the local level because you can make some of those decisions that directly impact the phones right away and and that's why I decided to run because we need somebody who is going to build bridges with the state legislature the governor's administration also here with their within every municipality across Morgan County but also this region and how we're going to come together to push of this community for for what you know I I'm listening to you here in the studio you you're handsome smile you know in in football more poorly what you're saying is so critical for us as a community you know and I'm looking for the young man here that has shown how he gives back to the community you know and you're continuing to do that you know as I mentioned your your lovely wife who stood up to it effective victory rally yeah you know that you it's the back stories you know that the day before you know I was talking to our nose I was telling her that this may be a possibility and you know we woke up the next morning and get ready to head to Madison for floor session and she was like all right or would you be back and I just looked at her and said okay I will be honest you're gonna have to do with it because I don't see us getting out in time we had a lot of important bills to discuss and pass in so I'm grateful to have the wife like Erica I don't know how I would be able to do this type of work will be able to raise a beautiful family without her being right next to me on my side well in that in in in that role you're going to be helping others raise their beautiful fabulous I think and that's what I hear you saying you know the the the the responsibility of that job it and how we can bring the community together and and you know it's it's it's impactful position we want the right person in there somebody that understands me out of the way I would explain it is that under this not that I just understand the struggle and that's why I need to be in the seed absolutely understand a struggle but also understanding of the pathways to help lift many of these people out of poverty IT lift these people out of the despair that they've been living again because I've been faced with that as well when you talk about evictions when you talk about homelessness when you talk about a mental health crisis that we've experienced that in in my household growing up and so you know from the things that I can be mad about everything that I've been through of the one thing that I do understand is that you know I'm a believer I do believe in god I go to church parking lot assembly of god and and and god has has put me through the waters and I'm sort of parkland assembly of god okay pastor skews me bishop bishop Harvey which we actually just retire so now we have a pastor Marcus Ericsson who's now taken over but god has pretty much you know put me through everything that I've been through to help set me for this type of success to help put me in a position to help others understand what I've been through not only do I like to learn from my own mistakes but I like to learn from others and I want to be able to be that beacon of light for others here in Walker county well very well said David so so the the this elections coming up you know what it was your days yeah it's just a couple days away and so how how is this sort of like grasping you at this point so let exactly especially when you know you can't knock on doors right so definitely changed up the format because of all this happen yeah yeah I mean you know no no fundraisers no door to door contact which makes it makes it much harder to campaign right but we are I am the lord Neil you the walking the streets now shaking hands with people that are absolutely vital to second hand in his and babies are going to all these different events farmers markets and things of that nature but now it's it's it's strictly a fall campaign social media campaigns you know if we have enough resources maybe TV but it this is really this really put a hamper on everything quite honestly not just the campaigns and we've been having conversations about what is going to happen on April seventh as far as the process of voting but we've been encouraging folks to to.

mean for I was a great skill a contract of what is this thing worth therefore the same two hundred and fifteen million what would you do okay because I want to work with a contract like that where would you go first what would you what would you spend it on a lawyer and a month and I'll just let the boring stuff one of the good stuff a car a house boat right after the car house boats docks I'd open my own dog dog run you know do something like dog involuntary things like that you got to think more on that one I think highly enough that's my contract with Milwaukee so the same thing I'll give my money to to do yeah he's gonna be asking for money later all right so not that I want to be I'd like it to be down here but coronavirus so I've spent the whole week with this plan some fun stuff as I just did a piece on Tito's vodka saying don't use our team goes back as a hand sanitizer which apparently Good Housekeeping is as an idea yeah although it's not the right alcohol level it's only forty have to be a sixties wanna get it right here but the whole perception versus reality think of coronavirus is fascinating to me because it doesn't matter what the reality is really in in Wisconsin we've been pretty sheltered from some the impact other places I've seen but the reality is all over the board you'd be talk about sporting events businesses travel it's affecting everything in that that perception is the new reality you know I'm nervous to someone else a lot of experiences all over the city and and gathers people consistently and we haven't seen any of the affected our numbers are people interested in our programs but I'm worried about getting to the summer in these bigger programs that are all outdoors and coming together you know I will what we didn't even if it's a perception and it doesn't it is Wisconsin is bad you know it's still going to keep order you know it's going to affect business look like a communist we don't obviously for good reasons but it's it's nerve wracking M. as in all businesses are kind of thinking the same way because I I heard from some of the the caller to the show that even although domestic travel is not supposed to be affected some companies are pulling back on their employees and saying you're not traveling they don't want to risk it could you I I just hate to be like this past events like if you imagine them walking gets the DNC and the Americans hold hello we have to what is going to be a empty Rita that would be worst case scenario what in your world okay what what is this thing well I mean from a university perspective we have to be prepared to write so we're having conversations this week about what you know what does it look like if it comes in his marquee hard what we gonna do with our student population faculty and staff and how does that look I don't know that final decisions have been made yet but certainly we're having those discussions because the students faculty and staff best interests of the safety and health is top concern severity stepped up like some of the the hygienic stuff and then the cleaning and all that really I mean you look every corner there's hand sanitizer there's constant reminders about just being diligent about your hygiene and you know not spreading germs I think common sense really comes into play with us and I think you know right now our work in this territory where there's like a lot of misinformation and it's hard to decipher what's fact versus fiction versus hype and so I think it just goes down to the basics right take care of yourself stay healthy if you have a compromised immune system young or old you probably already have steps in place to prevent getting sick at this moment with what you know as a change of personal behavior in anyway no I'm not we didn't touch elbows on the way and that's fine it's not every day but you know I'm still training I'm traveling hi make sure that I'm covering my mouth I use I wash my hands on ten times a day I'm going about my business eyes as I normally would and if it happens to strike me or someone close to me then I'll take the proper precautions Jeremy are we overplaying this things the media talking about it too much or not enough I mean I think that's the new normal we're going to do that I think Hugh think about perception and reality is that we don't know the reality that really we kind of think we do and I mean it's not in a two percent of people dying as I think of someone numbers I heard isn't then that could be my mom naked my grandmother to be my sister that could be my brother if there's nothing to say like it's only two percent which I've heard and how this is almost become a political thing is really kind of disturbing but I think you know if we can get more attention on more things like this you know that that this other side of research and other types of programs others want to raise awareness around I think we're just in a new normal of this is going to happen every time we have something like this and we don't expect that it's it's one of those it hit me directly then all of a sudden it's it's risen to that level for example there's a Wisconsin couple is on a cruise ship stuck out in the Pacific Ocean for them it's real they're feeling it right now if they can't get back to ports could you imagine just sit on a cruise ship and now all I mean that's why there is a sense that the benefit but there's also hard like line between what is it the flu and one is that the the virus you know I think there's that gray area as to like I feel sick is this the flu is a colder oh god do I have the current you know the virus so I need to go in and have all these tasks there I think there's an education that still needs to happen so you do a lot of digital stuff and you're one of those people that early on in the then my Twitter experience was something that you I kind of looked at as you know how it's done correctly has the the world of Twitter done a disservice to help we're telling the coronavirus story because in some ways it does seem that's the case yeah I would I would agree to that I think there's a lot of misinformation that's easily shared on social media Twitter especially it's very easy to put out bank information that is not fact based on how they catch on like wildfire and people start to believe that that's the truth you know if we're looking at things like the CDC or the FDA also single sources of truth the information coming out of them and hopefully start buyer our country's leadership you know should be viewed.
