"Available. I'm Brad Seeger. And I'm Susanna Palmer in the Bloomberg newsroom. Residents of the Jacob riis houses are being told not to drink or cook with their water for now. That's even though the company that tested their water and found arsenic now says it put the arsenic there itself in samples as part of the testing process. It has retracted its arsenic findings in the complex as water. Governor Kathy hochul said yesterday the state was stepping up its polio fighting efforts as the virus that causes the life threatening disease was detected in the wastewater of yet another county in the New York City area. The latest detection involving a wastewater sample collected last month in Nassau county on Long Island. The New York City health department says that it will work to vaccinate raccoons against rabies throughout the city starting next week. More from Bloomberg cines, Pellegrini. Susanna watched for this big push to start the day after tomorrow, wildlife biologists with the Department of Agriculture will be distributing individual baits containing an oral rabies vaccine. The loss will be using bait stations or tossing them by hand into wooded areas in Brooklyn queens and Manhattan, a city's health department will also supply a helicopter at low altitudes to deploy vaccine based on Staten Island's wooded and marshy areas from early to mid October. And so far the department says 18 animals, 7 raccoons from queens, one cat, one raccoon, and two bats from Staten Island, and two stonks, and 5 raccoons from The Bronx have tested positive for rabies. New York City's subway set, a ridership record on Thursday, carrying more than 3.6 million people in the highest traffic day since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a statement governor Kathy hochul's office said ridership, which is about a 35% increase from the same day a year ago. Coincided with the reopening of public schools, more people are also getting back to the office. store Erie county district attorney John Flynn told reporters Saturday The wheels of justice are moving swiftly A felony hearing will not take place in 5 days And then the investigation continues So we have taken the appropriate steps right now to get him behind the virus 18 year old Peyton gendron is being charged with first degree murder for allegedly shooting 13 people Saturday afternoon at a buffalo grocery store ten of the victims died gendron is pleading not guilty Authorities believe the crime was racially motivated Minority leader Mitch McConnell leading a delegation of Republican senators on a visit to war torn Ukraine President zelensky announced the visit on telegram Saturday morning Video shows McConnell accompanied by senator Susan Collins and John cornyn being greeted by zelensky in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv I'm Brad Seeger You're listening to Bloomberg businessweek with Carol masher and Bloomberg quick takes Tim Steven from Bloomberg radio All right with all the market volatility again this week I mean it's really been the theme of 2022 market volatility So we recently caught up with a perfect guest to talk about it He has seen a lot of market cycles Fair to call him legendary Allen Patrick Hoff an early VC he helped build and grow such companies as America online Office Depot A little company called Apple audible as well He's the chairman emeritus and cofounder of gray Croft He's also got a new book out Carol It's called no red lights reflections on life 50 years in venture capital and never driving alone You know everybody I meet is lived for such a short time relatively in this market that they only see everything going up and I've lived through so many cycles that to me this was inevitable it's going to come Everybody was living in a euphoric state that things were only going to go up And I think you better be prepared for some kind of hiccup and I don't know why it's going to happen but that's just the way the markets work How big of a hiccup and how long are the hiccup Well I think it depends on what the after fall is after this initial setback Will the market stabilize or is it going to you know after a certain period of time go down again I mean the levels that the markets have just been increasing steadily until the beginning of this year I mean last year was dramatic The whole Trump era was dramatic I always follow the theory that markets don't like surprises And all we had was surprises for four years and the market kept going on So I think we've got an after effect of that And I just say one thing this is not the time to sell I think you got to ride the rocky periods and watch how to see how it stabilizes Even a name like you know you've got meta meta platforms right Facebook down about 38% this year We were talking about Netflix before we got going It's down almost 46% since April 19th when it just freaked out the markets right When it came down with a lack of subscriber growth So I don't know how do we make sense of some of that Is that opportunity to you Or is it like there's something wrong Well if I were following public markets I'd be looking very carefully for where the opportunities are in terms of companies that have relatively good values and relation to their revenues and their profits and which ones have the balance sheets that are going to sustain themselves No matter what happens to interest rates But in terms of meta and Google and Apple I think we're going through a period where for finally the Congress are now focused on the monopoly positions that these companies have And there's legislation pending And I think that it's long been longer company You really are coming You realize that the Internet has not had any regulation there's been no regulation in 25 years we're living with outdated monopoly laws And I think that Europe has just passed some very significant laws And the U.S. is going to follow I think very shortly And that is an overhang Very curious about your thoughts on this Does the monopoly power that you argue that some of these big tech companies have to what extent does that stifle innovation when it comes to startups Of course it does I mean you know I can't tell you the number of companies I've been on the board of where I'm going to aboard me and they'd say traffic was down 50% or whatever the percentage is why Google changed their algorithms I mean that's monopoly if I've ever heard it I mean we our original monopoly laws were related to control of the railroads that control of oil now we're seeing a different kind of monopoly control And that is you know when you have 90% of your search going through one vehicle and when people are putting their own internal products and offerings ahead of other products that are available that's monopoly Consumers get hurt Yeah Oh ultimately of course Well let's put this way The advertisers are getting hurt The competitive businesses are getting hurt And I.

ambassador bridge between his city and Detroit has come to an end Pam Mizuno with Windsor police service at a few remaining protesters could be arrested if they try to block roadways It comes after a week of protests over COVID-19 restrictions I'm Brad Seeger This is Bloomberg intelligence with Alex Steele and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg radio All right thanks for joining us I'm Paul Sweeney Alex deal is out today but she'll be back next week All right I'm looking at my commodity screen here on the Bloomberg terminal I'm looking at spot gold It's been basically unchanged year today And I wonder what that means for the gold producers because I know we're talking about big time inflation here So let's bring in Bloomberg intelligence senior medals and mining analyst grant spore Grant thanks so much for joining us here How should we think about the gold producers here in what appears to be a steady inflationary environment Yes thank you Paul Well the irony of it is while many investors may turn to gold as a bit of a hedge against inflation But producers themselves are actually going to be seeing something of some significant cost inflation in these upcoming results We estimate something between 50 to a $100 an ounce increase in costs due to energy labor consumables freights Basically across the board that will hit their costs And that's going to see some contracting margins particularly in 2022 There's a lot of the lag costs come through and hit their cost basis Although the gold prices remain steady It will likely to see some margin contraction going forward into 2022 So a bit of a tougher environment for the gold producers themselves And this is something that I guess investors in the stocks are creditors to these companies They understand kind of the I guess the fragility of the margins in this business because it seems like your costs are pretty darn variable but your revenues kind of tied to wherever the commodity is right I think based as understand this very well But I must make the point that margins although they're going to be squeezed I actually still very very strong So they're still very very good because goals has stayed pretty robust But I guess those investors that are looking for a bit of a momentum in terms of earnings or EBITDA for that matter May struggle with that And you've got to look to those companies that have got something special that they can reduce their costs often it's recently mergers and they can take our costs on that basis Or they can indeed grow the top line through bringing on additional ounces Which we know is very hard to do in this industry where we have declining grades and resource depletion That's kind of where I wanted to go Talk to us about the resource availability of gold just kind of globally After many years of being very conservative on investments bringing on new mines and indeed M and a A lot of the bigger producers are finding that they resource basis are starting to I wouldn't say run out but they're getting a little bit shorter So they can either develop Greenfield projects and they have many of them on their books or they can start to look to acquiring resources and reserves in some of the juniors And we indeed we started to see some of that train come through at the end of last year with increased M and a And we think that momentum will continue through to 2022 And recently we saw the news from new Monday They're actually buying out some of the minority stakes in one of their projects in Peru Again to consolidate the resource base I'm guessing from what you're telling us that earnings out there on the street may be a little high as a risk there That is challenging I think everybody is aware that inflation is going to come through And many of the CEOs have sort of warned and given guidance as to what they expect inflation to be But in some of the very very early indicators that we've seen from some companies are releasing statements It looks as though we could see risks to the upside in terms of costs earnings may come in slightly at the lower end of expectations So yes I think there is some downside risk not for every company but some companies coming through in these upcoming results season Are there certain companies that you feel like are better positioned maybe some that might be more risk Maybe just because they're geography or the way they're manufacturing has set up What you're seeing is particularly in Australia The inflation has been quite high They've had additional constraints in terms of movement of labor So that has added to their cost base So I think some might disappoint a little bit in those regions There are some companies that have actually delivered very strongly on production And they've actually beaten their guidance That means that they're able to dilute their fixed cost base a little bit more than let's say others that have perhaps missed on the production So we've seen companies like Barrick and yamana gold do you actually quite well in terms of hitting their production guidance and targets Grant give us just the longer term demand model for gold How do you think about that Does it grow That's a very very interesting question I think demand for gold does grow Yes they're not consistently year over year But I think as the global let's call it asset base overall growth So your assets under management globally grow gold demand grows in line with that So it's not a particularly high demand if you want to look at it that way But certainly I think the demand does grow So I think it remains sticky going forward I don't see a sudden drop in the demand for gold Grant thanks so much for joining us grant spoor Bloomberg intelligence senior medals and mining analyst All right right now let's turn to the mortgage backed securities business This is a business I knew nothing about a market I knew nothing about until 2007 And then I think we all got real smart real fast on mortgage backed securities but we've got an expert with us Today Bloomberg intelligence senior MBS and fixed income analyst Erica adelberg joins us Erica in the MBS market talk to us about how you guys are thinking about rising interest rates We've got a Federal Reserve that's going to be hiking some rates here What does that mean for your mortgage backed securities business It's a very interesting time actually in mortgages and housing and mortgage backed securities because we're at an inflection point now where we're actually going to see rates rising and.

And I would say in several decades of investing I've never been in a position where I had to analyze things like this that went way beyond the normal parameters you look at as an investor And so it is introduced a level of volatility in the markets It's introduced level of inefficiency in the markets You see stocks reacting in strange ways and not anticipating events the way the market is usually good at And so it has made life very very complicated Yeah an economist Larry one of the things that may well affect is the supply chain problem that you just mentioned in the last segment I think one of the big questions about any time we're talking pandemic is the way I like to say it is how does it affect the number of bartenders relative to the number of bar customers Because the thing about the pandemic is that it affects both demand and supply And so you know it's going to be bad for the level of output because there's going to be less demand and less supply But with less demand and less supply you don't know what it's going to mean for prices And that's one of the puzzles in a lot of the discussion Everybody said a year ago that year and a half ago that we needed all kinds of stimulus because of the pandemic coming Now there are many people who say the fed doesn't need to tighten because the pandemic is going to end And people are going to come back to work Those camp both are unlikely to both be proper logical propositions I think all Macron does introduce substantial uncertainty into the future and probably even more for emerging markets than for the United States and Europe It does certainly put an extra range of uncertainty And I also think that we shouldn't be so callous as to analyze it entirely through the prism of markets or the prism of GDP statistics even if we don't even if it doesn't have any effect on mobility and lock up policies and people are still flying planes are much more pervasive virus is going to have a set of human consequences It's fair point I know you'd agree with that state First and foremost a matter of personal health and safety But it does affect investments and does affect money as a practical matter You have investments around the world not just in the United States Are you seeing a divergence among the markets According to actually the COVID I mean right now we see very different approaches I mean China really locks down pretty quickly to try to protect themselves Europe parts of it now are starting to really shut things down Do you see divergence in investment based on that Not really They are pursuing different strategies but I'm not sure whether the COVID strategies are the biggest driver of economic differences I mean for example China is an enormous amount going on in China President G we don't have time to talk about it today But he's fundamentally changing the nature of China's approach to the market economy That is far more important than the fact that China has its own approach to COVID versus how England approaches it or have Austria approaches or this or that So Larry what about the approach of shutting down as opposed to vaccinating Two very different courses have different economic effects Yeah they do certainly while you're locking down I think what I have been struck by in general is that the policy seem to have more effect on the timing of the.
