"To you what's comforting you. So Michael, I don't know a lot about country music in terms of writing it, but if you get the name country in there, I'm assuming it's a good start. Absolutely. You gotta have something. You gotta do that in some beer. I heard some song about it. What was it, Thomas redditor? What's your song? This is country, I think, Brad Paisley. Obviously I'm sure absolutely. Take me through the process. How does something like that song evolve? So usually I write all my songs, I'll rent it for a lot of people out when I lived in Los Angeles. Kind of gravitated back to the south. Always love country music from as long as I can remember. And just I've been a fan of great songwriting. So got down to Nashville. And I really kind of wanted to immerse myself in Nashville and the way that they wrote songs and there's tons of great songwriters. So I wanted to collaborate with them. This song came through my email. Through a publisher friend of ours, and I heard it instantly loved it. And I was like, that's how I want to start my career in country music with that song. And I mean, I saw you there. I mean, I could never do this because I can't, I'm just from a host. I can't get up there and feel the object. When you're singing something like that, you're living it too, aren't you? Absolutely. Have to. You can't really see anything you're not doing because people will figure it out. So growing up in the south, we did all these things that I talk about in the song and when I heard it, like I said, it fit me and I just loved the message and here we are now. What's country to you? You talked about writing. You've written for some of the biggest names in music. Take us through that part of your life. So I was in barbecue. Sitting in my parents house and I read a song in the kitchen with my mom. She usually, when I'm writing my songs, she's usually the first person to hear them so she's usually cooking when I'm riding, and if she turns around, that means that she liked what she heard. If she doesn't turn around, then I'm on to the next song. So I read a little song in the kitchen. One evening, my mom loved it. I put it out myself first, fast forward about 6, 7 months later. Tony Braxton heard it. And wanted to record it and here we are. Once again, when you have somebody who's internationally known, do your music. And then you finally hear it. You're wherever you are, whether you're in your car or at home. What does that feel like?

They're uncomfortable. You want it was the church trick right right right. Stay awake for the sermon but we. It's an amazing place to play because you just how many places how many types of music have a building. That is like the cauldron that began right right. I don't think many and when you were inducted into the opry that took place here. I was on. That's right there. That's a moment it was. It was like parents were here. Everybody's crying. i wore. Buck owns jacket from my favorite album. Which was live at carnegie hall album that he did which was yellow with sequins. And i actually worked for the induction. He let me borrow the actual jack. Yeah one when. He warned carnegie on. Oh my gosh. He was a buddy. So i was like i was always into the romance of these things out of you. Make the most of the moment and and have little things that that kinda matter. You know. You seem like you were. I know you're respectful of the history of country. "You know those are those are amazing stories now not his crowd. Shortly after johnny cash did a few things have made a bad. We have a history of that. Well i was just thinking though. I mean it must as an artist not weigh on you but you must feel the history when you walk on and stand on this stage. Remember the first time you did it. And what was that like. Yeah so. I played the opry when i was a new artist. I at the new opera house which is also magical. It's that's been there. Since the year i was born. So we're talking about something that is more of its more state of the art. It's a little less sort of it. Has less of the of the ghosts of this place but it has its own. It's since then become its own place. But when i finally played here somewhere in the season of opera shows they moved here and i came in. Played Yeah you get a feeling that you are carrying a lot on your shoulders being on the stage you wanna make sure that what you do like if you're going to mess up don't mess up here because you're going to mean musicians mess up so this is like a clam on this. That feel like pressure when you step out here. Oh yeah absolutely this is. This is singing at a wedding. This is one of those you know like the the other thing that's really fun is the way it feels the audience. It sounds great here. I mean you know and so much alchemy goes into making some place magical making music. Be something different venues matter. I mean these were taken away for a year and a half from all of us venues we could only listen to recorded music and watch stuff on youtube zoom and whatever and you forget something about being in the air of a place that was missing or you're going from zero to a million which is a year and a half of doing nothing to a couple of blocks from here on the fourth of july. You're going to be playing for two three hundred thousand people out in these streets on lower broadway. Yeah who knows. I mean it's however many it'll hold. I bet i mean. I'm not going to take full credit for that..

"Is three time grammy award winning country music superstar. Brad paisley i just got back from nashville. Last night was down there. Shooting a couple interviews including one with brad paisley and we shot it. Oh my gosh. What a thrill on stage at the reimann auditorium which is known as the mother church of country music. If you've never been in nashville when you go make time to stop at the reimann. It is a cathedral literally. It was a church so the seats inside our pews. There are stained glass windows upstairs when you stand on that stage first of all you feel the history of every artist who's ever had a name in country music who stood on that stage but also just looking out at the pews. It's tight room with great acoustics watching the sun stream through the stained glass windows. Absolutely incredible. So brad paisley and i sat on that stage and chatted The room were I flew in and got ready in this room. Backstage at the reimann. It was the johnny and june cash room where they spent a lot of time. And there's a picture on the wall of johnny cash and elvis presley must have been late fifties early sixties arm-in-arm backstage mike. God can you imagine what they'd been up to that night so there's just so much history in that beautiful beautiful venue and It was great to talk to brad as he was getting ready to perform a fourth of july concert on lower broadway downtown nashville the estimate three hundred thousand people to be at that show so we got to talking about his journey. He's got this song out called city of music. Which is the story of a musician who comes to nashville. Like him and like just about every other musician with that dream with a guitar. Not quite knowing what to do with it. How are they going to get their way to the top. How are they going to become their hero. That person they listened to on the radio and he did it So great to talk to him about that about how he spent his time during the pandemic with his wife. The actor you all know kimberly williams paisley. She was in father of the bride. There's a little story behind that how he loved that movie and eventually met her and cast her in a video. Also the work The couple does with an organization called the store which they founded a right around the time right before the pandemic head around the time the tornadoes that devastated nashville head and they just opened it up to people who needed food food insecurity and ended up now since then in a year and a half delivering one point five million meals to people who need them so a great guy who you know from commercials you know from hosting the. And it's affecting the whole family because of the stigma surrounding it like people aren't sleeping in the same room because of snoring restlessness Frequent trips to the bathroom stuff. That's keeping their partner awake so it's really nothing with the actual relationship but kids are kind of embarrassed about it at school. Because i feel like something's wrong. So people are trying to normalize it. And i think it should be normalized because i listen. I can't imagine not sleeping in the same bed. Bedroom with caitlyn. However if i was a screamer at night or if i was constantly getting up and keeping her awake and was unhealthy because of it i would encourage her to be somewhere where she could sleep better. Yeah this is about. It's not about couples fighting. Although i did have a hand uncle and something. It's different bedrooms. Their whole life is interesting. What do you think it was because the snoring you're fighting was fighting. I never knew. I just always thought. Well that's an interesting technique. Then you know people in two different houses. I guess growing up i like it was a friend of our families. They would talk about this couple. They were lawyers and they've been they were married happily for years and years but lived completely separate in different homes to me. That seems weird. However that doesn't mean it's wrong. yeah. But i don't think they had kids because that's where things get a little more complicated with that situation. Whatever works for the couple to keep them happy productive loving. Hey go do it. Halen, over the next few days, weeks, months and years those millions of words will never come close to expressing what he meant a rock music what he meant to guitarist and what he meant to the guitar itself that's pretty powerful statement Mr Gorman what did Eddie and remind me to rock music I. Think it's it's pretty simple. You can say that he and Jimi Hendrix of the two guys. That truly, and and only the two guys that moved the needle for the guitar itself I mean Hendrix. came out of a blue based. seem. And took the playing and the tone he could get to a new place but even hail and. Really almost came in from another country. Another planet I should say another he's like an alien life form I mean, he was a virtuosic player obviously but he He reinvented what what you could do is to guitar and the fact of the matter is this. Like Hendrix. But even to a greater degree, anybody tries to play like Eddie. Van Halen. Just sounds like a mind a mimic they. It's like rich little doing Johnny Carson okay. Yeah. That kind of sounds like him but. There's nothing nobody's ever been able to do any van. Halen. Did it make it feel a certain way? That each just the and he was that way at twenty two I mean, this is this is not a guy like it's not like David Blaine magic tricks where he gets bigger and better every year he started with card tricks that other people did I even Halen hit the ground running with Van Halen one playing an instrument that have been around for centuries unlike anybody else had ever done I mean he was on the Mount. Rushmore. Of Great Depar- players. At twenty two years old and then, and then he stuck around for another forty years still playing unlike anybody before sin. So I just think that in terms of. You know. Sheer unique. Mindset ambition combined with just. Great talent obviously. But but also phenomenal work ethic I mean he's just a complete unicorn in every sense of the word. How would you describe his guitar sound and I say that I know what I think of it but I wasn't I just messed van Halen like I came around right as you guys were blowing up honestly so that for me the van Halen was slightly classic rock slightly old rock to me as A. Kid. So as someone 'cause, you're just years older than I am but how would you describe his guitar sound someone who was in in it and living it in love and Van Halen? Well I can tell you that that was thirteen years old the first time I heard Van Halen and I remember it. I remember where I was I remember who I was with. It was going home from school in Hopkinsville Kentucky. You really got me there kinks the you know the their cover, the kinks song came on the radio. And and it was playing already and I said, Hey, mom turn that up. It was me and my mom and my friend Brooke. Lofton. The three of us in a car and she turned it up and I my first thought was. That must be like a live version of the king song and I was thinking like we don't they don't rock or do they. But when it hit that Solo and then by the time, the song ended I realized well, that does that's not ray Davey seeing this is clearly a cover version but what on earth is this and it was like making my? Hair on the back of my neck stand up. This is a time when I thought punk rock was the coolest thing in the world. and. The truth is Van Halen was more punk than the punks because they were truly breaking down a bunch of barriers if you will or they were going in their own. You know there hasn't been a band like Van Halen since led Zeppelin in terms of. Rock band hits the ground running at full steam and it obliterates everything in their path in a certain sense and. Jimmy van Halen sound it sounded like California was in my head. You know soon as I realized soon as I heard about them, they're from La, and as soon as I saw David Lee Roth and then as soon as I heard more than you know the next thing I heard was eruption Guitar Solo and you know hearing just two pieces of their first album and seeing what they look like it just. It felt brand new and it already felt like they're going to be around forever. You just knew from the jump and this is me as a thirteen year old kid who is obsessed with music. This band is one of the Alzheimer's like there's nothing like this and they all have the chops and the other thing too as long as I'm just rambling incessantly any van Halen was a great rhythm player. It wasn't just about the Solos he led the band rhythmically and he's also it needs to be noted not that it's not obvious. He's a hell of a songwriter I mean he really was. As I said before he's a true Unicorn I mean, just just nothing like it. What does this sound like do you? It sounds frequent and right in right in the zone near your your key. That's one thing because listen I played a little bit I don't play even as good as my friends who are real life musicians, but it's perfect frequency and frequency is in the tone or the, but as because it's a lot. I mean Brad Paisley plays unnoticed Brad. Paisley. Because I hear the chicken Pickin I hear a very distinct sound and again I didn't catch van Halen as it was happening in my childhood. But when I hear Van Halen Song even if I, it's I, don't know who it is. Just hear the guitar part I hear the Eddie van Halen because I how fast he shreds but the pattern that he does it, you can just tell. By By his fingers and it just kind of again it's hard to explain when you ask about music but that's what I think about and I try to. Always try to. Prepare analogies and most of the people who listen to this podcast here between twenty to forty, and if you were to make an analogy to another band, it's GonNa be tough because Van Halen was massive. But who later on had the kind of? Impact or. Reflected the mass listening that Van Halen had well. What band what yeah. What band can we look at now or in the last ten years and see? Okay. "CMA awards are known as country. Music's biggest night at the third annual award show last evening the stated focus was celebrating legendary women in country music but for many fans of Country Countries Superstar Carrie Underwood who's also a long running host of the ceremony. The night was a bit of a letdown. Here's Nashville based NPR music critic. Ann Manpower's the status of women in country. Music is a hot topic in Nashville. These days and it has been since two thousand fifteen when Keith Hill who radio consultant made some comments since that gave rise to the phenomenon known as Tomato Gate or salad gate. He basically said that the reason that women were not often played on country radio. Oh is because they were the tomatoes in the salad of country music just there for an accent. Unfortunately the data backs up. What Hill was saying? It's shocking looking how little there played compared to men so there's been a grassroots movement activist groups like change. The conversation down here is it's a big one that have really fought back against this and women are organizing women artists organizing and one way that people respond to these kinds of challenges. Challenges is to mess with award shows. Because you know what John. It's easier to mess with an award show then to mess with the radio format. Sadly yeah I saw on the red carpet Jennifer nettles from the band Sugarland War Cape. That said play our expletive records. Did that message carry out into the show in terms of what people we're saying as they were picking up awards. Oh definitely a one.
