"McCall. Macaw. Macaw. Coming over from Chip Ganassi racing to be the crew chief. Matt Carl actually used to be a development driver for rauch back in the 2000s. Actually, I think practiced a car for Carl Edwards and the Xfinity series. So that's pretty cool. By the way, because of this show, our family does not even call them seagulls anymore. They are beach birds. The beach birds, it's excellent. Beach birds. That's great. So yeah, TJ majors actually went over to be the spotter for Keselowski. It was his spot at Team Penske and moving over with him. Sponsors with him too. Since August, I think. Yeah. I've interviewed majors, he's awesome. Yeah, he's cool guy. I've interviewed him as well. He's a good guy. And it would be interesting to see what they do together. Brian Wilson, not from The Beach Boys, I'm guessing, is the crew chief of the Wood Brothers number 21 Cup Series car for 2022 driven by Harrison Burton. Yeah, and that'll be big for them too. So a lot of these pieces are starting to come together for Harrison Burton. This is a huge opportunity. This is a car that has Penske affiliation, obviously. It's a car that Matt Benedetto almost won in several times the last couple of seasons. You've got a guy of Harrison Burton's talent level. You expect maybe he can get something done. That being said, it's his first opportunity in cup other than the one off he didn't forgotten brothers racing this past year. So you're looking at a steep learning curve, but his record. His record, the Xfinity series in three years a championship. 13 wins, 55 top 5s and 7 6 top tens. Yeah, and so you add that on top of the guy he has mentoring him, which is his father Jeff Burton, one of the most brilliant minds in NASCAR as far as the driver goes over the years. The Jeff Burton. I think he'll be in great shape. But it will be interesting to see how he does early on in the season as he gets acclimated to things. Yeah, what else we got over there to be Christy dot com? Well, we've got Jeremy donley has been named as the crew chief for tye Dylan that GMS racing in the Cup Series in the 94 team. So that's been announced. We now know who will be on the pit box there. He comes from Ganassi and he's also worked with Hendrick in the past. We've also got Noah Gregson is coming back to beard motor sports to attempt to run the 2022 Daytona 500. Of course, Gregson tried running the 500 with beard this past season. They missed out after having really good run, but in the qualifying races, got caught up in some stuff and did not quite make it. So he'll give it another shot this time around. Also, there's some 23 11 news. We've got 23 11 is expected to acquire the starcom racing charter, which originally had been rumored to be going to aspire. But now it looks like 23 11 has backdoored their way in and is working on taking that charter. On top of that, 23 11 is also announced that booty Barker will return as by the Wallace's crew chief this next season, Billy Scott has been brought in as the crew chief for Kurt Busch. And of course, they've also got Dave Rogers coming in to be part of the technical director team from Joe Gibbs Racing. So that's huge. Wow, for 23 11. I guess Michael Jordan wants to win some more. Yeah, it looks like it. We also had a couple of guys dip in their toes and other stuff. Josh berry, who's going to be running full-time Xfinity this season. Made his first start ever. Goodyear all American speedway and the battle of the stars. He took the victory. He saved his stuff all race long, kept his tires good for the end with 50 laps to go or so got into a heated battle with Chad, who used to play Dale junior in a movie, and now Josh Perry drives for Dale junior and took the lead away with about 43 laps to go and led the final 43 laps of the race. So got that victory. And Kyle Busch made his debut in the nitro Rallycross. I heard about that. And finished fourth, he made the finale and finished fourth Travis Pastrana won that thing. Of course. Wild horse pass. Good stuff. That's what jumps in everything, right? Yeah, it's got all sorts of jumpy jumps and Scott speed. I think broke his back last year in that, so it's not very good. Things can happen. It really careful. They need to add that to NASCAR. That'd be cool. Yeah, there are a few jumps in there. Right, not the broken back part, but the keep the back can tact, but the jumps. Ben Rhodes and Matt Crafton are returning to Thor sport racing. Got their two drivers in the championship four, and they're going to be back. Next year, despite, you know, Ben Rhodes savvy with the media. Yeah, definitely. I loved the Ben Rhodes stuff. I hope you actually liked it. That was great. They gave us something to talk about. It was bizarre. It was bizarre, but man, it was awesome. It was so fun. To see a guy who cares. You could tell, he was just happy. And you don't get to see raw, real emotion, and how these guys are away from the track very often. So it was cool to see that. Basically, the opposite of that crafting. Yeah, no kidding, and what's funny is time of Jessie who's a long time competitor in NASCAR and short track world. I was like, I don't know what you guys talking about. We see this every Tuesday night and he posted videos of Ben rose doing pretty much the same stuff at his house or somebody else. It was pretty funny. But yeah, so then also, Xfinity series, Josh Williams, who's been a staple at DGM racing in the last few years. A real workhorse driver, a blue collar guy that people really like. He's parting ways with dgm racing ahead of 2022. He has an announcement to make, not quite ready to make it. It should be coming in the next few weeks. But Josh Williams will be looking for we'll be in a new ride next season. Wow. All right, well, are.

"I mean, it's a big state. Well, I mean, I'm not used to that anymore. I'm in a small state now. North Carolina is big. It's just long instead of wide instead of long. Well, I'm used to long and wide. Okay. Texas is long, wide, everything. It's got it all. Yeah, no kidding. No, plaster builds up by Sacramento. It's like 7 hours away from me. 7 hours, man. I was wondering why you never go to those things. My car anyway. So anyway, the champions we're talking about are chase Elliott and Kyle Larson. They're going to be racing their sometime this week, depending on when you're listening. Of course, the track completely thrilled, saying quote, well, I don't know if the track said this, it would go nice. Placerville here. Last year of ill here, quote, having the last two NASCAR Cup Series champions and actions in action in me at the hangtown 100 is unprecedented guys. Wow. Man, a short track on the show now. Yeah. That's interesting. Pretty happy about that, I guess. Yeah, very happy. Well, this is basically like Kyle Larson home area anyway. Yeah, Kyle Larson is from that neck of the Woods and this is his bread and butter. So I think we'll be talking about Kyle Larson winning that thing. Just going to guess. Well, on chase Elliot, it's driving a Kyle Larson car. So that'll be interesting to see how he stacks up. I know Elliot's kind of dipped his toe into a few things on the dirt the last couple of years. I think this will be his first winged sprint car race, right? The facts are all I had in front of me. I don't have anything beyond the scope of that. Well, I believe this is. If I've heard that right, I think this is pretty interesting to see how he mixes up. I know he ran chili bowl this past year. He's been running a lot of things. Chase Elliott's really been dipping his toes into a bunch of different disciplines, which is really cool. But you could also argue all he didn't win a championship the next year while he was doing all that. But whatever. He still made the championship for and it's just cool to see these guys mixing it up and showing what else they have. Because for years, people are like, yeah, these NASCAR guys are pretty good and all but we don't ever see them running anything anymore. So we don't really know how they stack up, but you see guys like Kyle Larson out there dominating on these tracks and you see guys like chase Elliott, give it a try and do well in their early attempts at it. Say, well, Alex Bowman has been running some dirt. Christopher Bell is always on dirt. It's just interesting to see these guys mixed up with other disciplines of racing. I sure hope Rick Hendrick has some more drivers trapped in his basement just in case something happens. One of these. I'm sure I'm sure these guys understand the big picture at this point. And understand something bad happens. That seats now open. Somebody else is going to walk into it. And Kyle Larson saw how much that seat can elevate you based on other equipment in the sport. That's an Alex Bowman reference, by the way. Well, yeah. But still, even for Larson, you know, I mean, he's seen. Firsthand this year, what can happen if you're in Hendrick motor sports equipment when you're used to other stuff? I think he has a pretty good grasp. What's happening here? Hey, we have got so much off season news that we're going to have to spill over into another segment. Keep it right here.

"Know what I'm just toss him away after he gets one? They're just lying around everywhere. I mean, well, I also love how you like the firewood that was in the corner there. Yes, his Martinsville clocks are just sitting off in a corner in a warehouse. That's how much he values them. By the way, so not right. I think two were missing. I think he might have two in his house because his house or he may have even gifted them to a team members or he needed to keep the place warm. Hey. You never know? You never know. So he also had a Chevrolet Volt in there, which I found interesting. I was hoping you'd ask about that. Just sitting inside one of his collectible cars. I'm guessing it's like one of the first 5 or something like that, because I think one. Well, Rick always has the first one. Right. And I know Jeff Gordon has a Chevrolet vault too. It's a gen one. Well, if you're down here in Charlotte, you see why Rick has number one of every car that's ever made. My goodness, the guy has got dealerships for days. It's insane. Well, he got to pay for all those all that race stuff. Yeah. So I found it interesting that he gets carsick. Who does? Jimmy Johnson. He won 7 championships and he gets car sick. He gets carsick when he's not driving. Could you imagine how good he would be if he didn't get Carson? Right. I know. And he said it's getting worse as he ages. Well, that's why he was getting worse as he aged. Maybe. And he's all in with his IndyCar thing. His face lit up when he was asked about Indy car. Yeah, I mean, a guy like Jimmy Johnson. He's not there if he doesn't want to be there at this point. He's earned the right to do whatever he wants to do. And it's obvious. He wants to do this IndyCar stuff and he'll be running the Indy 500 this next year with Chip Ganassi racing. So that's really cool. Yep. Yeah. Oh, I know. I can't wait to see all that. The one thing that the headline that made the rounds of course was his eye opening comments about the economics of NASCAR saying the driver contracts are down 50% from when he was in his heyday of winning championships at will. Yeah, I could see that being the case. I think that number jives, a lot of it is merchandising. The merchandising has just the drivers, the cut, they get these days. There's nowhere near the cut that these guys got back when Jeff Gordon was winning all his championships and Dale Earnhardt senior was winning his championships. Those guys had deals that were in place that were driver friendly. They understood the value of their likeness. They understood what their name brought to things that younger guys have, as the years have gone on, the team owners have started taking more of it, the tracks have started taking more of it. The sanctioning body themselves will start taking more of it. And you start looking at things in Cal Larson makes more off t-shirts that the world of outlaw races he goes to than the merchandise hollers at the NASCAR tracks. It's totally unreal, how out of skew, their earnings are on a merchandise these days. And I think that's a big chunk of where things have changed because the purse is having gone down much. I don't think they've actually gone down. They've increased based on the last few purchased NASCAR's actually allowed us to look at. So I feel like it's the merchandising. Well, and Jimmy also says there's just too much racing. He wants to see the schedule down like 25, 28 races. Yeah, I've always thought 30 would be good because you get the 20 race regular season if you want to do your playoff. You get ten races out of the 30. And your playoffs, but yeah, I'm with them. I think it's absolutely crazy. How many weeks out of the year, these guys are away from their families. The crew members as well. And it's just, it gets to be a bit much for fans to get fatigued from watching stuff. And you kind of see it as the interest will just wane during those summer months where it's like, oh my gosh, we're still going. So there's a thought to be had that less is more. At the same time, TV's a big dictator and what's happening here. And the TV networks want more races because even if they're getting 80% of what they would get if they shrunk the scheduled down, you're not making that amount up by running less races if there's a little bit of ratings increase. So I think there's a weird balancing act and that's a lot to it too. Anyway, overall, the interview was incredible. Go check it out on YouTube. He's got to cut up into pieces, which is a little annoying, but you kind of watch them in order and stuff. Graham benziger on YouTube. Good stuff. Very eye opening, and very casual. I love his interview style. It's fantastic. Super cash, for sure. So we got a wish Dale junior the best, don't we? Yeah, it seems like he's having some sickness issues, right? Yeah, he had to postpone his final podcast of the year he had a Kevin Harvick lined up and I guess he's under the weather. He's tested negative for COVID, so that's not it. So we wish him well. Yeah, so hopefully it's just a quick bug that comes through. But luckily to hear it's not COVID, could still be the flu. So that's very serious still. So hopefully they'll do yours all right. Bounces back and gets that interview with Kevin Harvick, by the way, if this was us Gary, if this was your eye, we wouldn't be getting a return, Kevin Harvick interview schedule, would we? Probably not. You're sick too bad. Yeah. But you know, to that effect he is the only hard junior he kind of has our net right. But I suppose. At some point, you're going to own the town too, so. Well, let's hope. I mean, what was the text you sent me the other night? What text message? Let's read that, because I think the masses need to hear that. I said, because I texted you late. I said it was 11 o'clock your time and I felt bad about that. And don't apologize. I run the world's top NASCAR site. I never sleep. I was texting this as my wife was watching me text it was just laughing. The whole time. And she was like, you're so stupid. I was like, you're not far off, actually. We'll see. Let's give it a couple of years. You get the old Carrie Murphy attitude. I love it. It's good, getting a little bit of swagger. Right. It's, you know, things are doing quite well. It's rubbing off keep going. Hey, a couple of Cup Series champions are going to a tiny little town and racing tiny little cars. Okay. You sack event and plaster speedway, California, hanger, hangtown 100..

"Got rid of it. How's he back? Well, thanks to Graham Benson and his YouTube channel and wherever else this play is. It looks very professional is probably on TV too. Forgive my naivete, I've never even heard of the guy. But anyway, he brought us Jimmy Johnson and an in depth interview, very professional, very cool. Yeah, Graham has actually had a few NASCAR drivers over the last few years. Kyle Busch. Dale junior as well. I think he's gotten some pretty good clips out of each driver or two of these talk to. Yeah. No, he knew his stuff. He did his research. That's for sure. Jimmy Johnson in depth interview and what we got out of it was some amazing stuff, major topics, one that had everybody talking rocky relationship with crew chief chat can house. I don't think we knew just how bad it was and how depressed Jimmy was in the later years. Yeah, I think it's interesting, and these are always the things that when you look back, you're like, wow, we got that bad. Right, tens or 7 time champions. How can it be that bad, but it was pretty eye opening. And it got so bad on the radio in some points, Jimmy's dad was questioning what you let him talk to you that way. And for those who have seen Shaq canals over the years, he's not afraid to do that. Right. I mean, it is interesting at some point you think that there's going to be trust there. This is the guy who's won your 7 championships behind the wheel. But at the same time, he's the guy who's won 6 or 7 championships from a top of the pit box as well. There's a lot of knowledge both ways there. He gave a tour of his I guess his warehouse or his storage area or man cave or whatever you want to call it. Well, I mean, he's got a bunch of trophies, fire suits, he had he's kind of a hoarder, actually. Hundreds of fire suits, something like 7 cup trophies. I mean, who does that? You.

"Final lap weekley. NASCAR president Steve Phelps is on and he is going to begin with the state of the sport of NASCAR. I remember using the phrase that our best days were ahead. I'm not sure everyone in this room or folks around the country, the world believe that to be true, I did. And I think the results that we have seen are more than encouraging, they are I'm very proud of them. And it really took an industry coming together in order to make that happen. It took race teams. And our broadcast partners are sponsors, tracks that we own or tracks that we don't own. That all came together to create an opportunity for our sport to grow, which is exactly what's happening. So if you think about the racing product itself, I like to start with the racing product because that's our business. We race and I think the racing that we have is absolutely terrific. And if you do it from either an eye test or emotional test or actually the data would suggest that we've had one of the best if not the best racing competition level in the history of this sport. So you look at green flag passes for the lead and I think it's the second since 2007, the most passing throughout the field that we've had ever. One thing is for sure, in recent years, the competition is fierce. I would say the drivers right now are up on the wheel more than any other time in our history throughout the field and it's exciting. So how does that translate to engagement? Our digital and social numbers are the highest they've been since since 2015. We continue to add on the social side. We feel that energy level and that excitement level throughout the digital and social channels. Television, which gets a lot of focus. We are the most stable television, the most stable sport on television since 2018. No other sport can match what NASCAR has done from a stability standpoint with our ratings. And if you consider our share number since 2019 in our Cup Series, is up 18%, which is hard to do at this point. It's just hard. And then you look at our ratings for Xfinity and our camping world truck series. They're up double digits. And the share, the share in both of those series is are up 25 to 30%. We are having a moment as a sport. It's important that we keep it going, which is exactly what we're going to do. We're going to continue to invest. We're going to continue to collaborate with the rest of the industry to continue the growth that this support is on. For 2022, NASCAR is going to look a whole lot different. Schedule, new car, everything. Then as we look forward into 2022, obviously, we've got a significant change that's happening in the sport, which is the car that we're going to drive. The next gen car is an important part of the future of where NASCAR is going to go. And it really hits on a lot of different important things for this sport, whether you're talking about relevance, you're talking about styling, you're talking about bringing this car to a place that frankly, the existing car can't bring us to. The technology in the car, the data that's going to spin off that car. All designed to enhance the fan experience. And that's what I think is going to happen here. And it will create some opportunities for race teams to be competitive for a long time. And I think the racing itself is going to be one that is it's going to continue the momentum that we've had from a racing standpoint and a competition standpoint. Is it going to be exactly like it is today and significant number of passages for the leads and throughout the field? I don't know. But I do know that our race teams are drivers, our OEMs, our own competition, people will make sure that this is going to be the best racing we've ever had in this race car. And speaking of schedule next year is going to look drastically different from what we've been used to in recent years. Here's NASCAR president, Steve Phelps again. I think the schedule variation is critical. For the success of the support, I think you saw really strong results from schedule variation, whether you're talking about coda, you're talking about road America, you're talking about even format changes like Bristol dirt, which might as well have been a new venue. And so Ben Kennedy and the team put together the most aggressive schedule we've had in 50 years. I think it worked. If you look at attendance, was fantastic at all of the new venues. I thought the racing was really good at all the new venues. And as we look to the schedule in 2022, going to the LA coliseum to kick off our debut with our next gen car. As a proof point, frankly, to, hey, we can do things. We're going to be bold in what we're doing, whether it's the schedule or the car, all of it, we're going to take calculated risk. So but to answer your question, I thought the schedule of variation was very important. The reason why we're able to do schedule variation, frankly, is the two public companies that dominated the cup schedule were they had responsibilities to their shareholders, and those shareholders wanted to see a return on the investment they were making in those public companies. So NASCAR merging with International Speedway corporation and speedway motor sports going private were things that people don't think about, but they were very, very important to the success of the sport and will be for decades to come. So I don't know what the 23 schedule is going to look at. Look like, but I know it's not going to look like the 22 schedule. When it comes to the next gen car and the relationship in general, the relationship between NASCAR and the driver seems to be a little disconnected this season. We went through a stretch in the summer where the drivers felt that they didn't know enough about the safety of the next gen car. And we're vocal about it. What I can say is we had repeatedly met with the drivers to try to alleviate their concerns about safety. With that said, they weren't in a good spot. And so we just kept meeting with them and making different opinions and experts available to them. Specifically around the test that we did down in Daytona. And I think the drivers are satisfied with the answers that they heard. So I would say, as we looked at June, July, early August, I think that's probably a fair statement that the drivers in the sanctioning body were not on the same page. But I think right now I believe the drivers are feel good about the direction of the next gen car, both from a drivability standpoint since they most of them had the opportunity to drive it now. And from a safety perspective. So I would say that we endeavor to make sure that our drivers understand where we're going. What's the vision of the sport? What's the direction we're going in? What role they play? And I think there are, although there is any driver counsel per se, we've had, I think, three all driver meetings, we speak with drivers all the time. I speak with drivers myself if they have concerns. I want to address them. And I know the entire NASCAR team feels the same way. Do I think that the communication between our drivers and the sanctioning body can improve? Yeah, it can. And it's going to. And so I think there's some different things that we've spoken to some veteran drivers about. That will address some of those may not be a driver counsel per se. But we'll continue to have all driver meetings. We'll probably have some smaller meetings with a handful of drivers. And then we'll have individual driver meetings. So to answer your question, Steve O'Donnell I met with individually with probably, I don't know. 12 or 15 drivers just to make sure they were comfortable with the direction.

"Current partners who wore my partners at the time to justify making. And what do you think the great equalizer is just the fact there are so many unknowns or do you feel like you've got some people? You have some more fixed costs, but this car, that's one of the strengths. Fixed costs, not just a manufacturing, but also in development. That's a huge aspect of I think what everybody is interested in. And the technology reset is one. Okay, more than the shocking revelation from the audio itself. I am blown away that Brad even talked to you. Yeah, it's been kind of a running joke for years. It feels like he doesn't like me every time I've ever been in any kind of a media session around him. But to his credit, he was very outgoing very, very open with everyone as we were there, thank to solve for being there and taking time out, spent time before the announcement, hanging out in the media center talking to every one of us that were there. He was a class act in this whole thing. And that's good to misread it. I don't think there's really any I think we're fine. I think we're good. That's good. That's good. So beyond that, what else have we learned about the rauch Fenway? Kozlowski racing. This is going to be is it going to be just RFK? Is it just easier? I think we just say RFK. So yeah, it's much easier. But yeah, the other interesting thing is this is the exit plan for Jack Roush. So for years, he even mentioned during the announcement today that he's been hearing the question for about a decade now. What are you going to retire? What are you going to do? He says, he still got a hand on the baton. But this is his exit strategy to leave things in the hands of people that he feels are true racers and have the same vision as far as winning goes that he does. And in turn, this is a chance for him to move his organization back into the victory victory lane before he does walk away for good. So he's trying to solidify the future. That's very cool. So what's it like on campus? What's the place like? For Charlotte Motor Speedway? Oh, you were Charlotte I thought you were a Roush. Okay, never mind. No, no, it was all at Charlotte. They brought the car down to Charlotte more speedway. Oh, gotcha. Okay. Because it's going to be there tomorrow anyway. They didn't want to drive it a few miles again, right? No, certainly not. That would be a pain for everyone. Well, very cool. So we've got we still have Chris busher on the list. Is there any talk of Newman going part time or anything? So that was the thing. Rauch said early on when everything was kind of being announced that they would have a third car part time for Newman if that's what he wanted to do. Newman kind of said now I want to be full time. And so he was looking for full-time ride. Now he sounds like he's open to anything. Imagine that, I'm sure he didn't like the things that were out there at that point. But now it doesn't seem like rauch is open to give it a part time team to him. So now it's kind of a situation. And then Newman's also now saying that he doesn't think the next gen car is safe enough for us to be driving anyway. Of course. I'm sure you could kind of say that's part posturing. So if he doesn't get a ride, you can say, I chose not to because I don't think the car say for something like that. But it's interesting to see how things have kind of shifted and flowed. But the whole time through this off season, I've heard heavy rumors that brick ware racing has been talking to Ryan Newman. You know, obviously nothing's been signed, but Rick ware did admit when they announced the Stewart Haas racing alliance that they had talked to no, and they've also talked to Benedetto and several other free agents. So there is a chance Rick ware racing has a totally different driver lineup next season. It looks like they're going to run two cars, the 15 and the 51. Imagine Cody ware has to stay there because that's the boss's son. And if that's the case, that leaves one car. Is it Newman? Has it been a demo? Is it somebody else I don't know, but we'll have to see. One of the things I took away before the Roush Fenway Kozlowski media day thing was there was a picture of Brad and he tweeted something to the effect that he's been waiting his whole life to be sitting at a desk. Yeah. Yeah, and I don't think it was just sitting at the desk. I think it's spreading his whole life to be a Cup Series team owner. Oh, okay. You can kind of see he was laying the foundation of this for years when he was running his own truck series team, having success on the track. He mentioned today in the media session that even though he had success on track didn't have much success off of it with the team, as far as sponsorship and money, and all that was concerned. But now he feels like he understands how to make the car go fast, which is what he brings to the table. Roush has the long-standing legacy. And then the Fenway group has the dollars behind it. So I think all three of those together make a really potent three way combination here. You know what's funny? Some drivers that gravitate toward that role and they work for that role. And other drivers are like, I don't want anything to do with this sport after I'm done. Yeah, it is interesting. There are some guys that you can see, they love Willem that car around the track, but they don't want anything to do with the business dealings and all that other stuff. They just want to drive, and that's all they want to do. And I respect that. But there are people like Keselowski, Dale Earnhardt junior and some of these guys, Jeff Gordon, now with the role he's taking a hundred motor sports. There's some of these guys that just want to be involved for years to come and you also have to respect that as well. I think it's interesting. And it is fun to see the different the different thought processes. I don't know who the next wave of guys that are that are going to be feeling the same way is what Kozlowski and these guys are doing right now. But I would have to say, I think that Joey Logano would be a guy that I think would probably do something similar to this later in his career. He definitely seems like a guy who's very hands on with his foundation. A lot of these drivers have the foundation for tax reasons and they just let other people run it. He seems.

"But a big part of what they're doing is they're trying to alleviate the heat inside these cars. And by having the exhaust run right there and not run the entire length of underneath the car, I think they're hoping that will get rid of some of that insane heat. They've been experiencing inside the cars. They've also got some steering components. They're changing up and doing some different stuff. I heard some different rumors about what the issues actually are, but then I will go on the record and tell you what it really is. It would be interesting to see if we get a report that things are better this time around. Well, okay, so we're trying to reduce the heat with the exhaust there, but literally the exhaust is going to be going up the window now. Yeah, it's going to be going up the window pretty much, and it's going to be right underneath their feet at this point. So the whole length of that pipe. So we'll have to see how it goes. It'll be interesting to see once this session gets going the next couple of days to see what the drivers say about the heat inside the car and see what the readings look like. But they're trying everything they can. They've been cutting holes in windshields and windows and everything like that. Wow. What to see what they can do? Of course, the 160 mile an hour winds might blow the exhaust away from them. Yeah, so that's another thing. This is going to be a mile and a half tests. So this is something we haven't done yet really with the next gen is to see how it works at the mile and a half speedways. And with the faster speeds, it might help with the cooling so we'll have to kind of see what that as well. More on that later, let's get to the Roush Fenway Kozlowski stuff. What did you learn while there that we didn't already know? Well, I learned that Brad Keselowski probably does not make this move if the next gen car does not become a thing. That was the key catalyst of him making this decision to jump on with rauch Fenway racing. Now rauch Fenway Kozlowski racing and become a part owner of this team. And you have audio of that, right?.

"Hey, that's me. And yeah, things have been good, Kerry. How are you doing, man? Doing well, we are on a milestone show right here. Today, wow, this is so this is 700? No, it's 6.99. Why would I 700 be a milestone? I just figured, but yeah, I should have should have saw that coming. I just think 6.99 is a huge, massive milestone because you're almost at 700. That's true. It almost because 700, if you're at 6.9, you're going to get 700 before you quit. You can't not. Right. So, I mean, it's 6.99. It's an aggressive. Yeah, see? Now you're thinking the way Carrie Murphy thinks. I'm thinking the way a guy who does not like the Barton is o'clock, thinks I get it. Well, neither does some other guy. We're going to talk about that later on in the show. Okay, well, that's good. At least I'm reading something into it. I don't know if I'm correct or not, but as we alluded to in the intro before the intro and then the third intro. I'm not sure how many intros this show all of a sudden has. But at some point, we mentioned there's a new team, and we wish we had somebody there covering it and that happened to be you. Yes, I was on location for the Roush Fenway racing announcement, and now the rauch Fenway Kozlowski racing RFK RFK Robert F. Kennedy in silver. Yeah, well, chrome, I guess. But yes, chrome. Even the logo was chrome. Yeah, it was all chromed out. Okay, so let's go through the process because you know it's the off season. We've got plenty of time on our hands. How do they reach out to you to show up or did you apply to go there or how did that all work? Yeah, so the team PR will send out a mass email to everybody on their list and say, hey, we're having an announcement. We want RSVP and show up. That way, they kind of know who's going to be there. And so that's what you do. I never got that. Of course, I don't think I've gotten a single email from Roush Fenway, and since 2004, I don't know why. Well, that was the thing. I don't know what the deal was either. I had somehow worked my way off their list. I was on it several years ago. And somewhere in the changing of PR people over the last few years, I was knocked off of it. So I actually had to reach out to Davey. Siegel, who's been on the show several times. A little bit. We got the chain moving that way by finding out who it came from so that way I could reach out to that person directly and I'll take care of. So thank you, David. All right. Once again, he's doing better than you. He always comes through in the clutch. I'm telling you. I'm kind of still rethinking this whole thing. I mean, I would if I were you. I'm big on. The ironic thing is the time of the weakest of the three. So I'm the one who talks all the smack. Well, you've got the you've got the golden voice, though. That's what it's all about. I don't know about that. I just have longevity at this point. So all right, so you get the invite, you show up at Roush Fenway racing and as you are there, it turns into a new team. Yeah, it's a whole new team. A brand new world for rauch Jack Roush, Brad Keselowski, Steve Newark was there as well the president of rauch family Kozlowski racing. And yeah, so I think the I think it's a pretty cool look, the whole thing they did, they showed the new number 6 car font as well, which was kind of like an ode to the original Mark Martin font with the team, but they kind of gave it a little bit of a tile italicized slant. So now are they going with that green where was that just for the announcement or that is the team green? They brought Fenway, the Fenway group in that green has been with rauch since then. This look more neon than the other before green. Well, I think a lot of that was lighting in the area plus they had the neon lighting underneath the car. So it made it seem right neon green than it was. The old green was more like the green monster at Fenway, which makes sense. Well, that's what the car was in person. So a lot of the photos it comes out a little weird, especially when you have all that weird lighting going on around it. Oh, but it was the darker darker green. It totally looked fluorescent. Yeah, you're talking about the photo I took there of the whole side of the car. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. It was coming out weird, because all those neon lights everywhere. So it was kind of hard for the camera to adjust and figure out what was what, but it was actually a dark green. Now, is this the first time you've seen the next gen car up close? No. Actually, I was at a shop a few days before this checking out one of the team's new next gens. A team that I was at, I don't think they want me to disclose who they are. So I'll leave that alone. That's fine. But yeah, I was out there checking it out and it was awesome. The splitters are the thing I think is really interesting by looking at it. They were at the test at the Charlotte roval. That thing took a beating and these things are not very cheap. So I think it was like 2500, $3000 somewhere in there for the splitter on this thing, which is all carbon fiber, and that thing took a beating in that test session. So imagine that at Indianapolis? Oh my gosh, imagine if they hit the freaking the curbing, they got ripped apart. We're going to have to have the turtles on the show. Yeah. And so by the time you're listening to this, I'll probably be at Charlotte for the next gen test or it'll be over with that point. But we were going to mention that, but go ahead. Yeah, they're going to be testing out some new things on the next gen this time around. If you look at the picture that I posted of Kozlowski's next gen, which is the actual one, they'll be testing. The exhaust is actually further up on the side of the car than it has been to this point. You know, it's funny you mentioned that because that was like the first thing I noticed, and I was like, did they used it? Were they used to be that up that far or is that new? Or what's going on there? And the reason I thought of it is because the placement, it's going to be harder for drivers to cut other drivers tires down, isn't it? Yeah, no, definitely it will be..

"They have finally come to Charlotte well and won this race in the world from home yeah you need to win this is a big deal what a great story not all some of it matter of fact there was a great two or three stories from Kyle petty and wow you know the wood brothers they always do it big I met with them after they won the race at Bristol with Elliott Sadler and we we gorged out at a golden corral so waffle house single the crowd never let it let people tell you the wood brothers they get a bug above their raise no they don't they don't remember their route they remember their roots that's that's for sure we appreciate Kyle petty story Tom the which filters pre race show rolls on time now for the Reilly auto parts media buzz brought to you by Reilly auto parts of an event this one of the six hundred used to be the ultimate test of man and machine but has some of the intimidation factor going away from this race certainly in terms of the nutrition factor right I mean it's not just the best equipment that survive anymore because everyone got the best equipment at least the top twenty eight ourselves that factors out of it but I think the more that we see that the conditions change throughout the night it will be up to these cruise ships to keep up with the adjustments and I think maybe that's where the the the X. factor comes in because the track will change and is you know you don't have to worry about your equipment making it to the end but you have to worry about keeping your car the best until the end and that'll change over the course of the night so that factor still is there in terms of that extra hundred miles and I think we will start seeing is that the lack of practice when we do have qualified for the fix on it but we don't have any practice so that I think that will separate some of the teams not having some of the practice the opportunity to try things and just attempt to to know how their car my dear actually act over the course of six hundred miles without practice I think that's a big factor Randall of racer dot com after what we saw in Darlington of all the questions about the fitness of Ryan Newman about kids have been answered I think so I think definitely a stop and asking those questions about Ryan Newman because first off he squeezes Brad Keselowski I think it was often turn for a one point you know because he's he comes off the racetrack and takes the spot doesn't even think.

The is the sporting life on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Here's Jeremy chef with the Daytona five hundred right around the corner. We welcome to the show. What are the best drivers in the world? The two thousand twelve sprint Cup champion. Brad kozlowski. Brad. Thank you for being with us. Thanks for having me on guys for bread. You've never won this particular race. You've what all the other big races. What would it mean to you to break through this year Daytona or the Daytona five hundred is probably the biggest race in NASCAR? And with that mind. It's kinda strange that it starts the season. But also kinda cool. It says some unique about our sport. And you know, like you said I have one one a lot of other races. And I'm really proud of one. But not that they told me five hundred and I think it would mean a lot to me, it's it's kind of one of those on clothes tappers in my career that I'm hoping that we can check the box on this year. We're speaking with Brad Keselowski. You're thirty. Eighty five. Now as we've said, you know, you've done just about everything that you can do in NASCAR except win this race. And you've talked about it recently. What it takes to win the Daytona five hundred sometimes it falls into your lap. Sometimes it is victory produced by aggressiveness by certain decision making. What's your approach going to be? Well, I'm gonna just try to lead every lap pecan to be quite honest. You know, you just don't know how these races are going to play out. It seems like we've had the car to to win this race number years. And you know, it seems like the years that we have the car to win race. There's been a lot of wrecks on a lot of attrition and things haven't come together for us. And here's what we haven't had the probably the car effort to win the race. You know have been years where it hasn't been a lot attrition. So everything has to come together. Just perfectly to win the Daytona five hundred you know, for us that hasn't happened yet. But I'm confident we just kind of stay the course and try to to do everything we can. To you know, up cry and lead laps and win that it will actually be our day. We're speaking with Brad kiss Laskey if the two car Daytona five hundred coming up, what would it mean to you to win the great American race? Why think it winning the great American race being the the one box? It's not checked. My career is is a statement. It's a statement that you, you know, you kinda done the most important thing you can do as a professional racecar driver in North America. And that you're one of the legends. And I love to join that group you've been working with Roger Penske for longtime. Now when the great figures in the annals of your sports when people ask you about Roger Penske, what are the first things that come to mind? Probably just his grace is class. I his ability to lose, but come back, and and and learn lessons and be better for it. And then eventually, prevail. He is he's got so many, you know, amazing qualities about him. But those are are one. Anywhere else or I haven't seen anywhere else in my life. And it's it's a testament success is is those ability at this point for Roger Penske, who I think is spent eight years old cow involved this year on a day-to-day basis with what you guys are doing. Oh, he knows what's going on. You know, our our team president, Tim Senator can him. You know, they talk jeeze if it's not a daily basis as close to it. But he he's definitely got to spin around the pulse. And that's really important. This successive are arresting speaking with Brad Keselowski out the Daytona five hundred about NASCAR general yo last year was an interesting year for the sports. There was a great finish to the championship race at the end. But there were there were warning signs that the business of NASCAR is not as robust, certainly as it has been or it was ten or fifteen years ago sponsorship down the removing stands from some tracks of. How you assess the state of nascar's business right now Brad, well, my ability to influence that is so very very little that, you know, I just asked for the serenity to to you know, let go and focus on things I can't control. And you know, that's that's tough because I wanna see the sport via successful as it can be. But the reality is I have very very little control over those things. And and to put my time and energy and thought into that is his war harmful than good. So quite honestly, I'm I'm trying not to be honest. And I think that there's some smart people working on all that stuff. And hopefully, they'll figure it out. He is there anything from where you stand or even if you're not putting any kind of mental energy into keep as there's something from where you stand that you think can be done to to get NASCAR back to where it was in the public consciousness. We'll certainly there's a lot of knobs that can always be adjusted here or there. It's just a matter of, you know, having the willingness to act and the emission to do. So. So you know, I'll I'll let those that have the controller the now of worry about it. With Brad Keselowski. Very talented NASCAR driver who is competing, of course in the Daytona five hundred this weekend, some people call it the great American race. Others calls the Indy. Five hundred you're an open wheel fan a still looking for that. I e tone of five hundred victory won the sprint Cup. Which is now the monster Cup championship in two thousand twelve will what goes through your mind in the moments right before the race starts. Well, the pattern show today on five hundred really not like any other NASCAR race it. It's pretty incredible. And you know, you try to treat the race like any other race. But when when all of those things happen all the pre race, hyper literally right before you get in the car, and you see all the people in the stands. They'd definitely affects you and puts some thoughts in your mind. But you know, you try to calm yourself and stay focused. It's a big race and get into tents or too excited about Inga DNA favor. So. I just try to keep myself calm and do you? Typically succeed you stay calm. Yeah. I think so it will result aren't and I want it. But I feel good about the things that we're doing that. We can't control we've been speaking with Brad kiss last St. who would be competing again in the Daytona five hundred looking for his first win there. We also have been discussing the state of Askar, Brad. Enjoy the race. Good luck. Stay safe. It's really been a pleasure having you here on on the sporting life.
