"Hoosier driver, dot? Org Hotline. Buddy. Guy. It's pretty good. It's good to have you on for the first time every. Hates it I haven't been able to connect with you before a bit. Of I can tell you this. You are now our meme well you. I mean you're a promoter so you should be a member of our team Racing Virginia. Our family, right we're inducting new members all the time every day every day. That's you know you. You took over Franklin County speedway. She's jump right in what have been the greatest challenges that you've had with promoting a short-track I mean. That's a that's a long time we. Don't know how long this podcasts can be but probably not long enough to talk about all that. But There's so many things this year obviously, you have the pandemic but there's so many other challenges there especially with the facility that's forty. Fifty years old you know just hasn't hasn't been changed much since nineteen, sixty nine. So you know with just the challenge to make sure that everything works every week more than anything. And then getting employees and you know maintaining them. It's very tough. You know we're you know we're outside of that Charlotte hub of of people and where the racetrack hasn't had any assistance the over the last twenty years You know it's really hard to build a staff and I think that's probably the biggest gallons of had in the one thing that I think that I enjoy. The most is that a lot of your race names are have A. Tip of the hat to the history of Franklin, county with its with the Moonshine I. Love It. Yeah. I mean we're you know we're we're all about the the the county that we're in and and it's heritage and history, and and the same thing for you know short-track racing you know we try to those names in sometimes You know to other events that have happened. You know that no longer take place and and and I also want him to kind of have a you know at Tom have a have a wwe wrestling field you know what I mean not. You know we're we're having wrestling. We do from time to time unfortunately But. You know that that is something that I you know growing up. You know I watched a lot of WWF wrestling. You know hope Hogan those guys and the names of their event you know stand out in my mind and and I want people to remember the names of these events that we try to. Uh, all of that together as. You know you mentioned the pandemic how has the fan count and also I mean I know you're limited but the the car count been this year for Franklin County honestly. I you know. I i. think maybe a few more people that haven't. Hasn't attended race in several years. showed up but honestly, it hasn't affected much of anything you know down not or not better than I anticipated then being they're not worse than just faded in the big you know going into this year Where we're at, you know we're you know we're a a real bouldering You have to get down and down and dirty and get you know get your hands dirty and get up on the wheels to to raise the Franklin young speedway and and there's There's a content of racers especially ones from from nearby you know motormouth and. They're not ready to get up on They don't have to at their home track and they're not ready for that. So they don't feel and race with us are a lot of our lot of are racists come from North Carolina where there are a lot more boring than You know that's that's our biggest That's our biggest hurdle with with the pandemic is we're trying to draw those guys You know sometimes they have restrictions on traveling. You know depending on weather from you know spots all that and we have to kind of pay attention to that too. So that's I think that's been the biggest challenge with. You have a eliminate middle class that is your premier class although this year and you're getting ready to have. The second one. Stadium invasion to. which a lot of the Bowman Gray modified coming up to race at Franklin. County which. Which eight three hates mile and twenty two degree banking holy smoke. Yeah. Yeah. The there's Bowman Gray Stadium. They a lot of them didn't know what they were in for when they got there. You know they they raised around a flat you know tracking. Room and when they got there for last one. there was some some cars at all during practice on Friday and You know they weren't. They weren't prepared for all the things but by the end of the weekend man I, think most of those guys want the racetrack old this war in places Bonaparte, but it's one of the most Incredibly. Bad to the bone racetracks that you will ever attend as a Racer Orban you know I I tell people all the time no matter where they're from because you know I know. You from race he do I knew everybody in in in writing just about and I always tell people man if you've never been to Franklin County, you should experience at least one time whether you're racer fan because there is there's going to be something. You're gonNA enjoy the night in what? How did that partnership are? Come about to get the Bowman Gray modified up to Franklin County. New. Opportunity you know. That's the that's the one thing about the the pandemic it went from. It went from being you know A. A death nail, you know what I mean. Being a gift I mean with with Bowman Gray being shut down and and at the time we were providing the last the last one. Had announced that they were shut down for the year There were still it was still somewhat in limbo and the week of our event. They actually announced that they were shut down for years that forced a few more people come our way and made the event a little bigger than it probably would have been and now that you know they're down I think you know some other guys who like, Hey, you know we're going to get up there and and and go right 'cause they're giving us an opportunity breaks I was getting ready to ask you do expect hire car count than the first one. how do You know and and you know it's always something hard to predict Just based on conversations I do think that we'll have. Three or four more cars than everyone of the division anything There's a there's honestly there's a lot of sponsors of businesses they're involved with racers down there who have reached out to us or we've reached out to them and and trying to put some more money in the in the pot for the racers and You know just trying to do fun things that. Would make them want to come to the racetrack. I mean, they all want to raise but you know a lot of them are has man you go from completely flat track and something that you've known all your life going to the high banks up in the hills where you get lost in you think you've done you made the movie wrong turn. So I mean it's just a different It's just a different thing for those. It's culture shock those guys. So, speaking of A. Fan Getting fans to the race track For. Fans. Of racing maybe over here towards the East Coast not might not experience to track before or people around Who might not even be race fans K- kind of explain the the at track experience for somebody who's never visited Franklin. County. Different for sure You know. It's like I said earlier, you know the place has been unchanged since nineteen, sixty, nine dollars. I'm thinking about things into that but We I. It's just old old.

"Welcome back to talk Lexus Erickson here in Concord North Carolina holding down the Fort, and the PRN studios while Mark Garo and Doug. Rice are in Texas house a feeling out there in Texas. You know it has been unmercifully hot, but I think that's been good for the contiguous forty eight states If you look at any national weather map, they're all red and we now. At least we know that Doug can handle the air conditioning in his car. Yes, so had to. We've that's read it. was tough to manipulate on and I finally had to get ahead to give in and give you get help from our Garo and how to do that, but we're. Were here. This is the second race this week. Almost forget seems like the All star race was a year ago and I'm going to ask both of you. This asked mark this on the other broadcast. We'll do it again. There were three big changes coming in Alexis. We'll start with you on each one of these. The first one being put. Under glow lights on the race cars career part of the race cars at Bristol your thoughts on that yet in love it. I'm sorry I know you and I have exchanged techs about this and you are in favor of the underground lights. The under car lights I feel like it looked a little bit half baked. Only him out the back of the car. I feel like perhaps if they figured out a way to get it to where the entire undercarriage of the car was glowing. You know I could maybe get on board with that a little bit more. With Alexis drop the under glow lighting Kevin Harvick got done the race. He said I was just hoping it fell off at some point, and you had some teams turning them off on the pitstops. Nobody really knew what to do with them. And I thought that was a stretch a little too far I. I was okay with it. Because let's face it this. This sport is desperate to cultivate new fans and putting some lights underneath the cards excites an eight year old enough to. To become a NASCAR, Fan I'm all about that. Yeah, I mean I look for the All star race. Fantastic loved it I'm not sure if it's something we need to adopt in all of our night. Races going forward, see my problem with it was. You didn't have three distinct colors. You had blue for Ford. You had the red for Toyota, and Chevy had this Kinda weird thing I think it would have helped have more distinct color chevy like they were on fire because he. Color, I I would really, if they if they do the lights again, let the teams pick a light that coordinates with their paint scheme. Joola Ghana's car look better with red lining underneath, because it would have played off the radar as car. That's not my thoughts I think we're getting a little bit to artists. Maybe well, I'll tell you. As, the car, my graphic designer husband said the same thing. He said it would be cool if they let us change. The colors based on the paint scheme, so you know. That is a little too artistic. We'll give into Jordan mark. You don't know this, but Lexus is. Husband is also very accomplished. I racer, he entered. We spent a lot of the the lockdown time watching Jordan, race. He won his court series which he runs in all the time, and he even had a few really good finishes in the replacement series. If I racing ever needs a designated caution, flag Siamese. I don't even think. They're with you mark. They're not gonNA. Let me near a gaming console. Lawrence, one of the other changes They moved the number around on the car and let the sponsors put logos markle. Let you go first on the side of the car. I liked it I. think especially. I looked at the discount tire Ford Car Brad Kazlauskiene. It really jumped off the racetrack I. think moving the numbers back a little bit allowing the sponsors a little bit more artistic, you know license to work on that side of the car on the you know the passenger side and driver side of the car. I liked it Alexis. I didn't like it at first when. When I saw it come across twitter and I saw the renderings and things of that nature. I just thought. You know what I just. It just looks weird I don't love it, but then I will say once I saw in Race I. Didn't even really notice it that much as much as I thought that I would so I'm good with it. Yeah Shakespeare says much ado about nothing. Yeah, once I started seeing it. I thought if I'm a sponsor. If I'm one, these companies and I'm dropping millions of dollars. I sure liked to have any extra pop and it wasn't distracting at all I. I know there were some detractors for just felt like. It didn't have much impact either way and the third thing Alexis was the the choose comb I love it. Absolutely love it, I think we continue that it gives a another ounce of drama into the restart and restart have been you know the best of the best as far as the content is concerned in these races as of late restarts or where all the action. Action happens and I. Think this just adds another kind of cool element to it I I'm here for it. CHOOSE COMB! Oh, I think it's a great idea I've watched. You know at Bowman. Gray Stadium Doug. A guy was in eighth place, and all the other drivers Wanda lineup on the outside room. He drove up to the inside of row one and made A. A race out of it, and maybe had a chance to win so again it brings one more piece of strategy into the deal and I think the drivers want it I. Think they'll use it in a way that will add to our site. I think in the order of adoption because they use this to Beta test, a lot of the new ideas, the choose cone. Cone will be in the sport year. I I have.

"Yeah. That team was pretty strong for quite a while. I'm in those are crazy stats suggest anymore really like one team being able to translate from driver to ever so easily is just. It's something that's really impressive. Dwi's closest competitor. Both years for the championship was none other than Bobby. Allison who has his biggest rival now? I didn't know that they had ever been friends. But going back to Daryl's Cup career. He said that Bobby Allison taught him everything that he knows about setting up a car. Because Bobby was actually building the short-track car that he was running in Asheville. And you know different tracks over the southeast but yeah during that time they were. Actually buddies is in. Bobby taught him everything he knows about. Set up a car bobby. Indeed you how to build a race car and how to maintain arrays car. He did it his way. And it rubbed off on Daryl on how to maintain a car that much true jared. I have a very important question for you. Yes sir. How many wins does Bobby Allison have in his rate? No no no no now. This is a test. How are we are we talking like blunts on the book or the like including Some of the other controversial ones. Because I know there's a. There's a debate between eighty four and eighty five. I listen you gotta you gotTa take a stand with others in eighty four ninety five. I'm going to go eighty five. I like bobby going good I I have to support him as much and he was nice enough to be the first big interview that ever got on our show. So I'm going with with Bobby Allison on anything. He does have eighty five win. I'll always say that. As will he the one question that I really did want to ask? Darryl was about the fact that they are officially tied with eighty. Four weds agent as I mentioned there. I think that's just proof that God has a sense of humor to drivers. That probably disliked each other. The most wind up todd in the record books officially did want to ask Darrell about that and to be honest with you. I kind of expected. Darrell at the kind of dance around the subject and to say that. Yeah they are tied. And that maybe bobby didn't deserve credit for that win. And maybe he did. Maybe didn't but he did say that Bobby won the rice there at Bowman Gray Stadium and nineteen seventy-one. He didn't know all the circumstances but he did know that bobby did win that race and that he actually did go to bill. French junior told him to go ahead. And Give Bobby Credit for the win. I thought that was pretty cool on Daryl's Park I think you're exactly right And really when you stop and think about it why not? We've all talked about bobby winning the race. It always bowling great correct. Yeah Yeah and he was in a Grand Merican exactly using a grain. A Grand American one time I think was going to grind east and so forth. But be that as it may. He was grand car one cup race. And that's why the victory was not officially recorded as a victory bathroom Daryl admitting that he won the race and going to bill France and saying go ahead and give it to. Bobby realized come on the truth is the truth. And let's deal with it. Jeter you take notes. I kinda winced this Osberg video. Come together I don't know man. I think I think I might. I'll I'll I'm definitely I take tons of notes about different videos and stuff Someone have to add this down to it? I just really quick I'm on became a Atta Because I know you guys are saying that they were big rivals and stuff When I asked Bobby Allison is actually really funny. The origin the question up after the so. Probably what you guys note. No the origin of the question but I asked him about his rivalries and he claimed that he never had a rivalry with anybody. Anybody this is Bobby Alison. We're talking about right. Yeah I differ. Okay talking about Bobby Allison of town Alabama not of Reno Nevada. Bobby Allison Eighty five win. Bobby Allison asked him about nineteen seventy-two if nothing else I'm thinking about nineteen seventy nine Daytona. Five hundred right. He said there was a disagreement in a Kales knows his fist. That's about it already. Said that's what he told us. He said they'd just the there's a disagreement down Three and four down there. Well as big a rivalry as darryl had with. Bobby Allison things kind of came to a head with the fans in nineteen eighty two when he was involved in a wreck at Charlotte in the world. Six hundred the Coca Cola. Six hundred and Steve is we talked about and Intro fans actually cheered. The fact that he was in this accident didn't know if he was okay. And all that you know there's a fine line between love and hate in Nascar and it is fun to bicker and defend your favorite driver against buddies favorite driver. And that's what makes this sport fun. Sure is the robberies. As long as it's good natured. Now when you cheer the fact that somebody's been wreck. That is way way overboard and I to be honest with you. I don't give a flying rats but how much you don't like driver. They are still human. They still have families and to cheer a driver who has been in an accident. I don't know that's that's a Black Hawk Fan and on the sport and unintended black mark on the sport but still is this is exactly one criticism has been given as over the years fans only go to racist to see rex. That's not true but when you cheer when a driver gets in Iraq especially if you don't know his condition that's exactly what fuels that particular fire while thinking a lot of cases fanc- the cars in the REX. And they do and they are about the flying sheet metal and the cars upside down and all that kind of thing but what they don't remember are they don't recognize or appreciate is the fact that there's a living breathing human being behind the wheel that Rice car and other? You lock them or not. They're still human being and to cheer something like that. I'M GONNA get off my soapbox before I get myself in trouble but after. Dwi is involved in this incident and he is booed by the fans. Larry Woody talks to. Dwi and Steve just to set up this story. Tell me who Larry. Woody is Larry. Woody is the longtime racing writer for the Nashville Tennessean. Which of course at that particular time is Darryl of basic hometown paper and you know the paper well yesterday. Well that's what he did and Larry was a very very competent. A professional writer my opinion I read a lot of his stuff and he could be very very funny when he wanted to be while he was also hard core. He was a combat veteran of Vietnam. So he could be a very no nonsense kind of guy one of my all time. Favorite press box.

"Promoting the sport and then we did something really cool by walking and talking through the museum for anyone. Who is Dale Earnhardt Fan? You are going to want to hear the stories and nuggets. The chocolate has from the museum. If you've never been in the museum I highly recommend planning a trip and I think after you hear this interview. You will be very intrigued to want to do that. Enjoy a fun. Conversation with chocolate Myers on the racing writers podcasts. My goodness chocolate almost had me in tears before we started this telling me that great story about those cars you got. Do you want to repeat it again or because it's something that I'm really proud of and not only that but a lot of other things and and look I've been the most blessed human being alive I think because You know people come by they. Bring me things that mean something to me. Everything means something to me. We had a guy that worked here one time. That was the guy that mode alone kept up. The parking lot. Did some things like that. And he's a great brand and a guy that didn't have a whole lot and always tried to happy Matt Christmas. You know. Get him a little something. You know just something that meant something to him and he came to me one time and he said. I got you a Christmas present as man. You don't need to get me a Christmas present. I knew he couldn't afford it right. And he gives me a stick with a ribbon tied around it and he had a little note on it and it said chocolate. This is a yardstick a founded in my yard. He said but you can have hours of enjoyment out of it. He said it works great to check the gas in your lawn. More he said. Heck you can throw it and get your dog to bring it back. That stick is in a showcase right now with the nineteen ninety four Winston Cup trophy because it meant something to me right and I get attached and things like that because I'm a people person but you mentioned the cars go back because and I'll give the whole story here in a minute but you know my childhood which stint at the greatest place in the world. That was Bowman Gray Stadium. It was winston-salem North Carolina. My Dad race there. My Dad was a champion. There we live close to there so after my dad lost his lap. Nineteen fifty seven Darlington. A lot of you know that you know. My Dad was one of the early Pioneers Nascar. We were able to walk to Bowman Gray Stadium. Rather BICYC- get my mom detecting so we grew up Bowman Gray Stadium and by being there I met a lot of the legends of the sport. Heck we used to have cup racing at Bowman Gray Stadium. Yeah they had the Myers Brothers Memorial race at Bowman Gray stadium for many many years Started in nineteen fifty eight And I think it went up to seventy one or seventy two. It was the last race. That Bobby Allison. It's the disputed rice. All the disputed is disputed rice. That was the last Myers Brothers Memorial race at bomb-grade said I'm not for that reason but because they were just Things to be worked out but anyway you know growing up as a kid going to bomb gray stadium when I was twelve years old which has been a long time ago about sixty years ago to be quite honest with you. I went there one night and there was a display for a twelve year. Old Kid to see a display with model cars. It was in. This display was made by Ghana. I've researched all this and I've had him here and I've talked to him. His name was Hilton and Hilton. He's getting up there in age right now. Hilton is in his eighties But Hilton had been to the military came home and decided. Because he was Bobby Myers Fan. He build a model car of every car that that he remembered my dad driving. And unlike today right you went to the race. If your car wouldn't run somebody would say we'll just drive mine right so there was a lot of cars different cars that he drove belong to different people and this is against sixty years ago. All of the technology was not out there. You you didn't get on the Internet in order you some stickers right you had to make it so anyway. They were gone for sixty years and a few months ago. Here I got a phone call from a lady. Her name is Betty Everson and Betty one. If I remembered her sure I did and she won't enough. I knew about her husband. His name was junior Persson. He was a dear friend of my dad is a matter of fact. He Double dated with my dad when they were kids but junior love. My Dad junior ended up with these cars. junior Later on had a car dealership down in eastern barred North Carolina moved down to the coast but he had passed away and she said you know the last thing that he told me was. Make sure that you get these cars and for her to bring these to me meant the world to me. She said all I want you to do is let people know where they came from. And I won't people to be able to see them and I said well if I got them. They're going to see them. Right goes on. I'm there I love the show this stuff off. I don't want to hoard it. I don't want to hide it. But she called me. She said I've got those cars here in once inside Lebanon at work at a meet you and she said she was going by the cemetery and I said what cemetery and she told me so. I met her cemetery in Winston Salem. And she's giving me the cars and I'm getting a little choked up because it was pretty emotional because I told her I said you don't know how appropriate is a because my dad's buried right there my dad and once again when we're talking about this my dad's headstone has a NASCAR insignia. Or the old NASCAR ALMOST GONNA tear up. That's just a wonderful story. Have you done? You mentioned showing them off. Have you done? I know on the show on trading paint. You Do Hump Day. She'll tell. Have you done that yet? With the cars kind of hard to do. I don't remember whether we've done show entail. I try to keep it relevant to what's going on at the racetrack so last week. We're able to do a vowel stem. Right it's getting hard to do and the reason it's getting hard to do and and once again I talk about that I'm a traditionalist but yet I'm a realist. E I love what's going on but we've got so smart and so good these racecourse don't have problems anymore. I don't if that's a problem or not I don't know and once again here we are. We're doing this interview a couple of days after we just left California. But we're doing it like ten days after we went to Vegas at Vegas. We had an unusual amount of cautions there and we talked about how great the race was at. Fontana will hardly had any conscience other than stay head one other than stage breaks. And we're sitting here going like we needed a little bit more. Look I used this for a great example and I don't use this to offend anybody. I just you. This is my opinion. I look at what we're doing today and understand what we're doing today right Because things happen change everything has to change but I go back to my roots. Go back to Bowman Gray Stadium and I've said this for a long time Bowman Gray Stadium Right. Now is the only weekly series racetrack They're still running. It's started in nineteen forty eight. They steal race there on Saturday nights during the season they still pack the grandstands. And I'll look at that and I go shouldn't just be a great example now. The racing is not that good not that good but the excitement and drama is out of this world. I don't know of anybody that goes to Bowman Gray stadium to watch cars go round circle but I know everybody. That goes along gray stadium to see what happens when you're in somebody's way now. My other example of that as I look at Bristol Right. I look at Bristol and I go and I love the folks up there and I think they're doing an awesome job now of trying to manipulate the race track with all the things that they're doing now I think they're doing a good job with it. I think everybody found out and the drivers have gotta take some responsibility. They wanted that racetrack fixed. Nobody went to Bristol to see three wide racing. They went to Bristol to see. Tommy or billy bob or dale or rusty or Jay off move that other guy way to get around him and look. I'm the excitement and drama Guy Right. I love the excitement and drama. So I think that we've got a lot of lessons out there to be learned now going back to what we're seeing now once again. It's Kinda to argue about what we're getting because Vegas was unbe speedway racing as always unbelievable always. I love it Vegas unbelievable last week. Maybe not as much. I still enjoyed it too so I like what we're doing when I came in. I said Hi Chocolate High Chalk. That's what everybody knows you. Chocolate Myers. How often are you called Danny Anymore? Amid a guy this weekend that. Niimi is Danny he said I kinda feel kind of weird no chocolate because I never knew you as chocolate but this was a guy that knew when we were like eight or nine years old seven eight or nine years so anyway. I'll go on and tell the story because I would imagine that's GonNa be next. Where did you get the name you know the story? I don't like asking questions but if you would like to tell it for those who don't know you are more than welcome to greatest man in the world or at least one of them. Henry Ford Not Henry Ford of the Ford Car Guy. His name his name was Henry Ford. He was my my little league football coach. Right where you go out and get those life lessons right you get the fundamentals. You really didn't know how to play football. You just run up and down to feel you had a good time but oh Henry Ford threw the ball to me and I stayed out the sun. All the time had this dark complexion and he said catch the ball chocolate. Drop it and all the other kids out. It was the funniest thing that ever heard so they started calling me chocolate. And here I am. My mom went to the PTA meeting one time at. He'll junior high school and she told the teacher she said. I think my son's in your class and the teacher said what's your son's name and my mother said my sons Danny Meyer's and she said the only Myers has chocolate. Meyer so it. It stuck pretty pretty well stuck around for quite a while so you. It doesn't matter what people call you. You don't it's not. It's not a thing where it bothers you that is it does not bother me. I had a guy come in a museum but met me at the racetrack one day and he walked up to him in there. We are working right. We had our goodrich. Uniforms only walks up and he says. Hey Buddy you guys have a guy on your team named chocolate Myers and I said we do. He said which one is. It was actually me. Hey said you don't remember may no and evidently you don't remember me either so things like that that happen every once in a while people will know you from that three-team of course learn heart. The flying aces junkyard dogs. I'm sure you guys had many nicknames. Over the years and we all know Dale's numbers. We know great. Dale is but for you personally. What are some of your personal highlights from your time going over the wall? So I'll tell you the greatest one really you know as a kid growing up wanted to be a race car driver because my dad was a racecar driver is a kid growing up and having those childhood dreams. I dreamed when they being a great race car driver in going to Darlington where my dad lost his life and went into southern five hundred. I never accomplish that as a racecar driver but when we were able to win the southern five hundred for the first time probably one of the most emotional things ever for me really to be able to do that but then going on and you know one of the things that I you know. I never talked about this for a long time because I never thought about it. We want every qualifying race in the ninety S. We want them all. If you go back to data and look at the record books in the qualifying races at Daytona won all of them in the nineties. That was incredible to win the Daytona five hundred and having my family with me to win at the brickyard and have my family with me pretty cool Daytona and we just talked about this the other day on the radio and I tell everybody daytonas really not that big a deal. It's it's not any different than any other racetrack and to you in it and then it changes everything right because you know you want it but you don't want to tell everybody how bad you want it but to go there so many times and be so close you know. The first time I went there was here in eighty four to go down and race with this group. We went down to eighty four and Dale had come back to archie or and this is a time you went to the racetrack. You Kate every engine and gear that you had and we went there and like always we were pretty good but it was the practice engine then the qualifying engine then the the race motor. Then put the practice motor back. I mean we changed motor. We did everything and we finally felt like we were pretty good and we had that last practice on Saturday. Right happy are they used to call it. We go out and we run that card for the very last time. Now we gotta do after this going to run the car get one more lap in. We're GONNA WE'RE GONNA get plugged check and look this spark plugs. And then we'RE GOING TO BE SET..

"Hope you have the happiest of holidays the merriest of Christmases and we hope that twenty twenty is the best year you've ever had so Steve Bobby? Ah Bonnie talked in this segment of the interview. I did with him. He talked about Tony. Stewart coming on board as his teammate. At Joe Gibbs racing the gaining in nineteen ninety. I'm not into things really stood out to me about about what he said number one. He said that in essence. Tony was a good guy behind the saints. That somebody that some of us in the media didn't exactly get to see some well. I agree with that also agree that Tony was a good guy behind the scenes. Because I've built right behind the scenes and I can tell you. Yeah he's racist very competitive and okay. I'll go in line and say that he probably has anger management issues early in his career. But when you got to know him a little bit and he got to the point where he was comfortable with you it was a different person. The second thing that kind of stood out about one talk about what bobby was saying was it was very apparent. That body was trying his best to not say anything that he shouldn't uh he was trying to play it pretty straight I can understand that. And then Steve another thing that really kind of jumped out at me about this interview. He finished second to to Dale Jarrett for the Nineteen Ninety Nine Two cup championship and he talked about sitting at the banquet watching Dj except all of his accolades and and he said that he was very angry. Bread yeah because he wanted to be onstage. He had chased. Dj All year and he talked last week about the relationship that he had with DJ and trading information and when DJ was on. And be leaving. Joe Gibbs Robert Gates dates and DJ was helping him trying to open the door. A little bit. Get his foot in the door with Joe Gibbs and all that and bobby said that they talked every day about what was going on on and what they could do to get the rods that they wanted but not to ninety nine Winston Cup Championship banquet It's a different story. Yeah no I'll know that he's necessarily surly Matt at DJ. I think he was just mad at the fact that he had come up short right. He was frustrated. I think that's the way to put it. Bobby actually said that he hit gotten deals autograph back when DJ was in the Busch series. and Bobby Lewis running late model so I don't think it was again. I don't think it was anything anything in their relationships I should show. It's not personal is professional more or less because when they get on the track but let's face it things whole lot different than they are off. The track. Friends are friends ads away from the race track but on the right track. I don't know that you rice a friend maybe a little bit harder. You see that a lot so the year two thousand rolls around and Bobby Ebony is on point is he ever Steve He finished sixth in the Daytona five hundred that year. He dominates at Rockingham the next week and wins which moved him up to second in the point. Standings it goes to the top of the standings after Las Vegas which was the third race of the year and Steve. That's where he stayed for the rest of the year with the exception of just one week after the first Talladega race where he dropped to second behind Mark Martin was his year no two way it was his. I mean they might as well written him the check. You know sometime around July say but he won four races including the brick yard four hundred and the southern five hundred. Steve here's the one that Kinda blows my mind. Hey finished all but seven laps about that seven laps the entire year and he won the championship by two hundred. Sixty five points over deller now that is consistency. That consistency is exactly great. Winning the championship by that point system was all about over the course never mind. I'M NOT GONNA go. Hey wanted over the course of the full season and yes. He clenched it with a rice to go but that was his championship and he absolutely deserved. It earned it earned it and at Darlington the southern five hundred. There's more to that store than just a number in the win column. He goes out and practice to make a qualifying run on. He gets up to speed going into turn. Three and Steve. The throttle hangs wide open and he plows into the wall. And that's the very same thing that had happened to Adam. Petty and Kenny Jeannie Irwin earlier that year so that was a pretty big story. Absolutely it happened to Adam and Kenny at New Hampshire and tragic results. He told Jimmy Amy my car he said I. I think I'd better go to the Infield Care Center. Just be sure and of course he goes on to win the race. which was the big story? Bobby Bobby said that Dale earnhardt Jr team was like yeah. We got him now. You know they. They saw bobby being kind of ginger around the race car. Kind of banged up a little bit. They thought they might be able to only natural form to feel that way but bobby goes on to win race then. Bobby talked about winning the Winston Cup championship which was obviously the highlight of his career. He was the only driver ever to win both the Busch Series Championship and the Winston Cup Championship. He the and Terry are the only brothers to have won the championship. Is that right. Yeah Okay Yeah. I'm pretty sure that's the case. And then he goes to Daytona one of the next year kind of walking tall chess bowed out a little bit as he should and everything happens on the last lap of the two thousand and one Daytona I. Five hundred and and Steve. Bobby actually made the comment that that took a lot of the fun away from defendant. His wants to cup championship. Well that is certainly understandable and bobby was not the only driver if you will that way and I might add a whole lot of fans felt that way too big earnhardt heart fans just had the wind knocked out of well. I think what happened. Was the questions change from. Hey Bobby what's it like to defend your wish to cup championship. How you think your season's gone there? Were still those kinds of questions but always always always always that year. They're going to be questions about Dell earnhardt questions about safety questions about the device. Soft walls whatever. Yeah all those temp ix that you just mentioned took precedence over almost everything else. Steve if bobby eventually left Joe Gibbs racing after the two thousand and five season and after that he kinda bounced around a little bit did some time with petty enterprises and Jt Jack daugherty racing tad and Jodi and then he did some testing for a tamer to and then stave he kinda got to a place where or he actually enjoyed having a weekend off every now and then rather than having to go to the race track and be head against Walnut being as competitive as he wants had been. I can understand that because I think many drivers reach a point in their career where they think. Hey this crazy I I'm I'm never home I'm always worried about how I'm running. I don't need this grief and take a different turn so two thousand and nineteen. He Goes Bowman Gray Stadium to kind of hang out with a buddy of his. And then the buddy he is Kinda says. Hey do you wanna come back to the race track and then the BUG Kinda hits. It's in he winds up barring a car to run a modified race or two at Bowman Gray stadium leave of his since the Steve. I'm GonNa tell you. Watch the truth fans at Bowman Gray Stadium. They take their racing sears. Yes series now. Let let me ask you this. What is another just overwhelming piece of Trivia about Bowman Gray Stadium? Well I can tell you this. I've only been there one time. Relay that's right. Never had the opportunity to go except for this one time but I think one legend about Bowman Gray that I think is pretty interesting is that there was a young young man there one time who had a job selling peanuts at Bowman Gray Stadium and dreaming aiming about being a racer. Well he became a race driver and then he became a team owner and then he became a championship kinship. Let's see what's that guy's name I can come up. That say you can think of it. Richard childress children children. Children are see Richard childress got his start selling peanuts and popcorn there. But that's not the piece of Trivia that was looking for okay. Okay what you're looking for yours truly for that one Houston. Oh One. Summer drove the pace car at Bowman Bowman Gray Stadium there. I gotTa tell you was a highlight. How did the mock career well? The fact of the matter is great garrison who is the promoter. There Bowman Gray has been in his family since it began. His grandfather was Alvin. Hawkins who basically opened the place and and Greg Garrison went to church with me. Obviously I had asked gray about driving the pace car tomor to end the year before he had actually let me drive it. A couple of races aces and I rode with the regular pace car driver. Mike Norman for wanted the rice is that not and then we switched seats and I drove and Dan. Mike Rode Shotgun and then for the finale the modified races. He got out of the car and said I'm going to beat traffic. I'll see you later. Yeah so I'm driving the car solo. My very first not ever been in the pace car so that was a blast but then the next year I got to grab probably five or six Saturday nights because Mike Norman actually raised a modified and the nights that he would raise. They would call me to you drive the pace car so you talk about some experience. All right I gotTa tell this one story there was one night the track would get. VIP's come in and run the pace car and there is this one night where it was a mom and her daughter and mom was probably in her fifties or so and the daughter was probably in her twenties. Somewhere in their mom wouldn't feel any pain. You mean that mom mom was lit guys you gotta the device so and it was eight atomic year when the do sat on the grass pretty early at night. They called a caution and gun the pace car which was a brand new Camaro so it had a little bit of horsepower. Gun The pace car out from where it sat and when those tires it hit the do on that grass man I did a full on Dukes of hazzard. Slide there the Infield as trying to get onto the racetrack and Mama the whole. Oh time is just so that was one incident and then another time they called a Colin and I got to where I was going to enter the right track and got on the right track and I looked in Rivi mirror and evidently at least some of the drivers had not gotten the word that that there was a caution and they were bearing down on pretty heart gay. So that was that was interesting. I'LL BET but again I've said it before on the show. The pace car driver is the coolest job in recent. Oh that was such a coal summer and and finally Steve the Nascar Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony here in a few weeks..

"It's literally what that finishes the end of the day matters most and I'll tell you though that no matter what when I was racing around gale swerves in Indy I couldn't help but think man. This guy is a lot to lose today. You know this guy is up for. I've gotTA rates. I've just got to be a little bit conscious of the fact that this is some situation he's in so I think you know so we all try to say. We're just GONNA race you all the same no matter what situation but there comes a time where it's only natural that you understand because you're paying attention obviously as a non-playoff driver that playoff drivers are racing for something a little bit bigger right at times but at the same time if you put it they have more to lose so it's a catch twenty return policy find yourself in. I don't think there's any question I think a lot of people outside our sport that don't understand racing how playoff drivers race with non playoff teams and think that must be really odd. It's just something that we've all had to navigate together because of the situation and I will say you know that's like that. Every playoff run now the championship for there. There was something like if I happen to be around them you almost bail out of the way like I mean unless you're battling for the win in the race because that's a different when those four for drivers but yeah I mean it's they're always going to have more to lose than the guys that aren't on the planet mentioned paying attention before we go to break during that maybe the line of the day from AJ talking about financial maintenance saying with his girls. You know they're going to be okay. I think you're they okay but no. It's cool that they're doing that. You know the program manager sure it's great for I mean you're a millennial. You know Michael Financial help campus campus situation. You'll let me in. I don't know that's just a little behind the scenes from Aj for you before we go to break but coming up Jeff Burton and longtime I star Race Director David who share stories about one short-track with big on intensity puts tales is next here on Nascar America When you ask people they often say it's in my blood drivers in these teams and they running people want to be here their weekend getaway? All these all Detroit catches because there's so many fans that come out there every single beginning me the most important things to give him an opportunity to something. That's really what this is all nothing more important than the small palm grassroots. There's nothing more important. Definitely I love racing community. Is Everybody tells the same passion and the bird. I know what or you're thinking. I have to watch drivers dream grassroots racing in America. It debuts this Saturday at one pm but here's what makes it cool. It was all reported on the very same day this summer but at local tracks all over the country Alaska Maine New Mexico Minnesota and North Carolina all on the way gave me goosebumps on on Saturday course one of the tracks featured in the show Bowman Gray Stadium where Longtime Nascar race director David Hoots started his career in the sport and he's got a few hoops tales to tell about about the Matt House so who are some of the great so you remember racing here I remember Richard Petty started history. I remember when Dale Scott Coming Rex wise in that beautiful gold and white are the red number four near jared being here. There is a list that when you look at the whole of things that have come through grace stadium. It's like the WHO's who vast hall of fame racing the final fired so this place is known as a man in exchange. If you've ever been here on a full moon and just see the elements alibaba's fit can come out. You would understand why I remember Bobby Allison. Urge turn in something occurred during the race. Kurdish spun bobby out. Well Bobby was never one to back down from. Anybody and I think that's why is one of the Great Champions Steel Today Steel L. Today well the second time responding out bobby felt like he needed to reminded that he was out there before the race was over there crossing the football field trying to ram each other. This is nineteen sixty six now it would be priceless to watch these two big grand national cars for across a football field trying to rick each other while the race for school and I I think what's great about that is that we saw that happen to your awful. This same thing happened and I think that's what this racetrack often drivers so. It's so small in the grew. That's one group. There's only one place you want to be and everybody fights for that. Group and people get very very frustrated with each other actually racing each other here every week you know had their frustration. Restauration level has to be exceptional. I think that's what adds to the excitement the same token you'll have these fans that are absolutely passionate to watch these cars go around and let's face it you and I both know racing fans or some of the greatest interest and I think Parker are in. Aj agree as we were watching that you said what a love bone-dry guys are talking also by a couple times and it's just an incredible experience atmospheres insane. I remember the first time I went you know I've seen the pictures videos the show at the time I remember thinking well. You know I can get there will later like they don't need to be there that early. We we arrived couldn't find parking getting into I was surprised we were allowed to end because it was show packed and it was just insane experience. I went back time so they thought it was so. I've loved that if you haven't done it as a race fan you gotta go. Check it out just one time because.

I've been lucky this year. I've got up there a couple of times to watch it and and and i i enjoy the the the racing jason in entertainment and something happens. It'll recur this net now. They you'll say this is not supposed to happen. Does so you kind of expect the unexpected when you go into the stadium. I bet you do so for my track. My roots four is a single at bowman gray stadium. What's it like for you well you you you take all the races as they are that each one is important but i think the significance of that race is that when he comes down pit road after win it and the respect that the competitor shown this is the man yeah i mean that's the only way to say this. This is is this is a hard bunch to earn respect from but here's a guy that stuck with it through thick and thin won the race ace and then they had the opportunity. That's just never there really to show him that. Respect that that to me was was exciting the race all all rail you get excited about that was the real pinnacle of that race historic moment a lighthearted moment hashtag. "What they're calling was. They didn't have to learn. I like they do they say. So. Wpro. All that. And he didn't do it. Because he knew wanted to do. I would do simply amazing here Nick Sabin the head coach Alabama whoever wants he's the premier coaching in college football today to talk a little bit about his story. Some things he got wrong and things that coach, Robin and coaches of his era really got right through the example, knowing where they're supposed to be knowing that this was their mission in their life will film, it oats Robertson dude for so many years there grandma state university. So a tip of the kept everyone there in Louisiana forgetting Nick saving to come back there. And you actually even ask the question about leaving LSU. I'm sure some people still wanted to talk about that why he left still some hard feelings about that down there. But still for him to go there and play great tribute to coach, rob. I think it was just go for him to be able to answer some questions from the audience and people actually here, you know, some things that they probably never heard before. Because it was like a town hall setting. And this was actually the second event that grambling had and their legacy keepers preserving Eddie Robinson playbook series. Of course, presented by the Eddie Robinson museum. So that was a good thing. Great thing. Great thing. Great thing fantastic there. And remember this coming season the next two seasons to honor. Coach Eddie Robinson the in a will play the national championship game in grambling Eddie Robinson stadium. So there's still a lot of events coming up to honor the legacy of coach, rob Ben tastic stuff. Now moving onto something that we found out about that. I'm sure well, I can say I didn't know about it until you told me about it what North Carolina ANT the aggies yet again, but we're not talking about football. This time talking about track and field and the dominance that they have right now, they are there. Simply amazing and this week there up to number six in the country. Not just among HPC us but six in the nation, Loretta. And track the aggies men's and women's programs. I haven't phenomenal seasons. Of course. We heard the story obviously about senior Kayla whitening. What she did. She ran the fifth fastest time ever the one hundred meter in history. And she's helped elevate their anti-women up to number six in the country. The other top five teams that lead them leading into number six are big time programs. Like Arkansas takes say, Southern Cal Kentucky, Oregon, and then A N T false right in there after these major programs others having a phenomenal year. And it's great to see HP you team intrigue have this type of recognition at this level. So tip of the to everyone. They're up in Greece for the work that they've done the NCAA division one east. Preliminary rounds are coming up may twenty third and through twenty fifth and the university of north Florida and will be moving on to the outdoor track and field championships in June fifth and six so I mean, tremendous dramatic. Distribute for them what they've done great to get that ranking up to number six in the nation remarkable for the aggies Bay, I do want to mention that in all North Carolina ANT has fourteen times or marts in the top fifty nationally six of their times are in the top five, and they moved up eighteen spots from their number twenty four ranking last week that that's for the women, and you talked about what they have coming up. I'm looking forward to seeing what Kayla? Why is going to do? She has the number one time in the nation. Both the one hundred and two hundred meters I'm anxious to see what she's about to do nex. Noah just excitement there. Carolina ANT great job by the aggies to achieve this which still more to come. We'll be keeping an eye on it. And we'll let you know what they do you play now while doing well and track they've also had an outstanding baseball season and earn the reward will be at HBU World Series at one game play on may twenty fourth of schedule. Played in Chicago. We'll be North Carolina AT gets Southern University. Lucia how you how you feel about this at think, it's exciting to know that this is starting my only concern would be of course, the location of the game. But that's another conversation for another day that the good part is we we are seeing a game such as this happened. And it's going to be good. I think for the community to to see these baseball teams who are doing outstanding at HP CU institutions. So starting this. I think it'll be a good thing hopefully continues, and it grows and continues to grow, and it becomes this. Massive of everybody looks for to each year. People don't talk a lot about HP see us in baseball. There's a great legacy of great players down through the years who are produced. But by HP us, guys like Andre Dawson and Marcus gruesome at Florida am going back to players like Lou Brock from Southern University. So I mean, you have a great heritage of great players who've played baseball at HP see us nothing wrong with making people aware of it again. We've had some great wins. ANT with wins this year at South Carolina gets the Gamecocks southern with a big win against LSU this year. And we see here to win a wreck in the regular season Jackson state and they've had a great season as well. Kansas to split a double header big twelve action taken down a big twelve team. How about that Loretta? That's amazing. And so games like this the World Series. Like, you said it's just another platform for people to see what's being done on the HVAC you level in baseball Jackson state team, by the way is thirty into two on the year as they get set to head into the baseball tournament. And they have a fifteen nine Mark in in swipe play some great baseball down on this wet this year look to see who comes out of that tournament. Now. While these teams we're talking about being rewarded for the great performance. Another baseball team from HP us. You know is suffering a bad blow after having a tremendous season. And that's. Winston Salem state law. Russia. Yes, they finish thirty five and sixteen one at least thirty games and all nine of their seasons. Since the program was brought back in two thousand ten now before the program was brought back during that time in two thousand ten the school had it had baseball in thirty eight years. So it lets you know, how well this team has been doing since it came back in two thousand ten like I said this year they finished thirty five and sixteen and at least thirty games in all nine of their seasons and to finish out there last year because like you said, it's a, Sean. Fortunately, this is the last year for Winston Salem heartbreaking heartbreaking. But at least they went out on a good, Mark. They wanna championship. That's a good way to go out. Even though it is heartbreaking. And you don't want to see a program who has been able to sustain a success the way they have go at least they're going out on a good note. But it's still said like you said still. It is when you got a program that wins thirty games a year. You can't find a way to sustain that program to me. It really hurts. Your athletics of we all want to tip the cap to everyone Winston, Salem state baseball, the coaches and the players were going out there. Even though they knew their program is being shut down. They went out and played hard at one thirty five games. That are simple remarkable. And they went twenty one and nine after learning that their program was going to end this year about talked about the bond of the team as well. They went out and said, you know, what if we're going out? Let's go out kicking and screaming. Go out and. Folks championship. They did great news for them while that was great news. It was there is a question Mark over the football program recently the head football coach Bulwer was dismissed from the Team Canada. Suddenly, and he's been very successful coach their Winston Salem state. But apparently people there are not an administration not satisfied with his handling of an incident and altercation between a couple of players that happened there in the field house the locker room at Bowman gray stadium this whether play their games and it carried on over into domitory. And there was another altercation that took place and apparently saying coach Bulwer not report that in a timely matter, and then a correct manner and because of that he's been terminated now. He's appealing this is appealing this decision by the ministration listened Salem state university. He's been a coach there since since Carmel Mainers departure elevated to head coach. In two thousand fourteen and the Rams have been one of the best program one of the better programs in the AA. So we'll see what happens going forward for the Rams of Winston Salem state. We do know that Robert Massie has been elevated to head coach of this time. So Robert Massie was assistant on that staff. He is now being elevated to head coach Winston Salem state coming up. It's appear replica of the one that he won so many races at Bowman gray stadium. He won twenty nine different times. One four. What is now the premier series racist and martinsville speedway just unveiled one of the grand saves the Glenwood grandstand? Sadly, we lost two thousand twelve hall of Famer on January the eighteenth. But still being honored and rightfully so this weekend here Mark fitting to that. Leonard wood is the one that was driving that back seater around the Spain half mile Mark speedway. What a cool moment that was. Absolutely a very cool. And now that car has been tucked away. And we are ready to go. The field now forming up to buy two behind the pace car off her number two, you've got Gano working to the inside of Eric L Merola that's role one right behind him road to another couple of Ford Mustangs, Brad Kazlauskiene. Look how deep up here to booth their driving down to the corner of these cars, you guys can't see their home on the radio. But I'll tell you what they got a really big score on these cars for what they had here last year almost twice as tall. And what that does gives you a lot of downforce. These guys are advantage. Look at the two car out there and eleven twenty to get in a quarter deeper that I've seen him in a long time. You can really tell from our banners point that I really doing some car is Brad Kazlauskas the eleven is Denny Hamlin riding right behind Brad. And the twenty two is look Ghana who is out front. "On april seventeenth of that year scott had his first encounter with william france senior known as big bill before under of nascar scott had gone to rally to race the night before but the race had been rained out and it was pretty common for nascar to compensate drivers for the cost of getting to the race when it was rained out and this was particularly important to wendall scott he had no kind of financial backing or sponsorship and he didn't really have much money on his own all the other drivers who had showed up in raleigh that night were given fifteen dollars to cover the cost of their gas but inex faily who was the promoter refused to compensate scott so when scott meant france in lynchburg on the seventeenth he told him about what had happened francis shared him that from now on he was part of nascar and he was going to be treated just like any other driver and then france gave scott thirty dollars from his pocket later on in the nineteen fifty four season scott a race ahead of another driver named ward macdonald macdonald intentionally rear ended scott's car repeatedly afterward and the only thing that kept him from physically attacking scott after the race was over was that scott's friend fellow driver earl brooks physically intervened the day after this incident france sent a letter to every nascar driver saying that anyone who intentionally wrecked scott's car would be suspended but unfortunately it didn't last long scott had ongoing problems with other drivers intentionally wrecking him during races or forcing him into a wall this included an incident with drivers shorty york who rear ended scott two different times at bowman gray stadium in winston salem causing him to roll over both times neither bill france nor nascar as an organization did anything to address it apart from being a racist show of potentially lifethreatening poor sportsmanship this kind of treatment.

"The cops told him that if they wanted a black man who could drive they wanted wendall scott so rogers got in touch with scott and there's a little discrepancy in the dates but it seems as though his first race was on may twenty third nineteen fifty two he borrowed one of his old whiskey cars from a relative that he'd sold it to after it had become too recognizable to law enforcement there are a lot of accounts that say that scott came in third in his first race the danville fairgrounds winning fifty dollars but according to his recounting of it in the book harddriving the wendall scott story by brian donovan he started out really well but pushed his car so hard at the beginning that it didn't have the stamina to make it all the way through the whole race he pulled out a couple of laps before the race was over in spite of this and in spite of some of the spectators booing in throwing things at him he loved that first race he repaired the car that night and the next day towed it to winston salem north carolina bringing some friends with him with the hope of racing it at bowman gray stadium bowman gray is a nascar sanctioned track and it was the first sanction track to do weekly races holding them every saturday night in the summer it's likely that the first people he talked to it bowman gray that night didn't realize that wendall scott was black he had a medium brown complexion that had kind of a ruddy tone and his eyes were blue especially with a hat on people often thought that he was white so it first everything seemed to be progressing normally he was allowed to register for the race car was inspected and he was told that he would need to install a safety belt he went over to the tracks shop to buy one and the next thing he knew he was being told he couldn't race after all but no reason was given us to why when scott had been talking to officials at the track he'd been by himself but when he went over to the shop to get the safety built he took some of his friends with him and his.

"Well you know it really is the proving grounds to determine if a guy has enough talent or not it really is the opportunity for people to learn how to work on race cars and but more importantly than all of that it's really the opportunity for fans in their local hometown or you know an hour hour drive live to be able to go to races and you know i think we tend to think of nascar style racine is just cup racing and it's not it's everything from you know lay models to street stocks to all kinds of stuff and not just nascar you know a lot of short tracks around the country are not you know nascar racetracks and you know dirt tracks and all sorts of lot of asphalt tracks are nascar tracks and the importance of those tracks is is more about it's more about building a fan base and that fan base has a connection to drivers that are from their town from their area you get these rivalries that happen on a yearly basis well actually many yearly basis where you know the thing about you know the the racing at bowman gray stadium where you have this constant rivalry between families and you know some people hate that family some people love that family and really that's what that's what sports are about so the health the overall health of shorttrack racing asphalt shorttrack race in isn't very strong right now it's if you talk to track owners if you talked to two guys that owned the cars if you talked to those key principles it's not very healthy there's a lot of effort to make it healthy but you know there's been a general decline in in excitement about about local racing so it's made it hard it's put a put a lot of pressure on on all racetracks owning a racetrack does not look like a very lucrative business and certainly owning a late model is not a lucrative business so there's gotta be something that happens to make make it so that if you're asphalt late model racing you could somehow another scrounge a living out of it and that's almost unheard of as opposed to you know thirty years ago there were a lot of people that were running late and super late models around the country that were making a living doing it you know again it's not about the health of the racer.
