"Is up to. And I will say I agree with you. This is such a beautiful thing to do. I will say to have two parents named Matt, have a 9 year old son and for the parents to be in their late 20s. That sounds like a Sims house. It sounds like a Sims house. I commend these people for what they have done. For literally saving a life, but I don't know. I don't know, but of course get the gift, but also if you're only on a casual sort of, if you're only on casual terms with them, still, I don't know. I feel like that's up to them. Except to Kevin. That's up to Kevin. It's up to Kevin. I mean, is the gift for the parents of the child. I think it's for both. I think actually this is way better than a baby situation because like a 9 year old you can zero in on a toy. You can do that with a baby or getting onesies or whatever. It's just like the most boring shit I know, I know. Action figures Pokémon. Go to the 9 year old like in 2022. See, I see it. This is actually, okay, so I'm glad you're giving guidance on this because I don't think I have any. On what a 9 year old bikes. I mean, I just think back, I don't know, 9 year olds like toys they like transformers. I mean, this person has been brought into this kind of bizarre marriage, so they're probably going to need just some level of comfort and security. A book no. See, I'm so bad at this. Sleeping bag. I don't pay for this kid to sleep on. Yes. How about a fun sleeping bag with the 9 year old's favorite character? Batman Superman, we've got Spider-Man LEGO. On LEGO set. I like I said. Legos great. Children love LEGO, there you go..

"Now this is an interesting one. Pop culture cookbooks. IE recipes from Harry Potter. You go out and buy a cookbook and it's like Harry Potter's stew or whatever. Harry Potter stew sounds disgusting. I feel like it's I feel like I feel like you're feeding me easy ones 'cause I feel like these are pretty cool. These are randomly chosen. Okay. That's why you take the number. I feel like they're always such clear marketing ploys. And I feel like they must be considered curses. Is that your final answer? Yes. You're furious. These are so this is the problem. I've given you three. Actually, I never. There's no arguing here. They're not really easy, but look, I there's no way I can argue that pop culture cookbooks are a gift. There's just not there's not an honest place to begin with with this. Anyone that buys one of these what are you doing? What are you doing? These things, who is the recipe genius behind these, you trust somebody? I don't even know where to begin. I mean, do you have off the top of your head? Your favorite book series.

"The only state where there is a different different TV show that is number one is New York New York is so different from everywhere. I get it, I get it. Are their favorite show is How I Met Your Mother. Now if those three shows Laura and which one are you How I Met Your Mother, friends or Seinfeld? Oh, that's a toss up between Friends and Seinfeld. I'm definitely not How I Met Your Mother. I'm really sorry to anybody who is. I never liked that show. I don't even know why that show was made. Sorry, that was a little harsh. But no, I am all about Seinfeld's all about Friends. Let's go Friends. Friends Friends. I get it. I don't love that. I know who look at your face. I never see don't tell anybody. I've never seen an episode of Friends. I don't. You're kidding I'm totally your kidding. I'm telling I'm telling everybody. Oh my gosh. It's such a big part of the culture. I'm sure I've watched some of it. But I don't think I know. Matt LeBlanc was so beautiful just to look at your crazy, not even for looking at him. I don't think. Remember to love what's going on with Pete Davidson and his SNL cast members. Are they being supported about this new relationship? Of course they're being supportive. I mean, it's Kim Kardashian. What do you think? They are opening up a little bit and we've got a Kenan Thompson saying, you know what? I mean, you've got to be happy for love, I guess. If it's love, they look like they're having a good time. I guess you could take that kind of either way, maybe he's just being diplomatic. And then but when Yang said that Bowen Yang, by the way, is my favorite essence. The new memories. He says, I don't know the nature of the friendship. But it seems like they're having a good time climbing hanging out. There's that. And then we've got Chris red and this is the best. Chris Rudd says Pete and Kim, damn Pete. Damn. And then he adds, I hope they're happy. They're wearing matching all of it. So I think they're on their way. Yeah. So, I mean, I think that everybody on SNL is just as surprised as we are to see this relationship. And they're doing their best right there doing their best and not judging, like the rest of us. You know, sorry. We can all say that we're not. Well, the edge in their bets aren't they, because they're not quite sure, and I know there's new reports that I know it, I've read it from really great places. My sources are not as sure. So I've spoken to a couple of my kids Friends and they're like, Peter round and they're sort of having fun, they're not even sure if they've said this because we're a nice podcast. If they've consummated the deal, they are hanging out, they're giggly. A lot of my sources think Chris Jenner's behind this get this. It's a romantic weekend at Kris Jenner's house. So he's staying at Chris's house in Palm Springs, like, you know, that's a little strange, and she is the manager and that photograph that they put out Lauren. He's promoting her pajamas. Those are her pajamas that she's trying to sell. Look at his face..

I'm so proud about the rauner brothers and bowen yang further ashley. That's like a a normal thing would be gradually bowen yang not normal. Congratulations warner brothers. On your seventy million emmy nominations anyway when yang who were them though i think maybe the biggest breakout star on us l. since pete davidson. But that's that's one hundred percent true who he's the first featured player. That's not even the main player to get nominated for an emmy. That's like i i didn't get it. I was like there's been so much nominees. Like what are you fucking talking about. And it was like no. He's literally like the the b team in the show and it's like it's the b. team and he got the a-list outshone all of them. This year he did. I mean he was the iceberg and he was his friend. His friend liebowitz impression. Amazing to that. Iceberg was inescapable in that happened. Snl also more about the clips that people pass around and talk about the next day. So it's like you don't even watch. Snl to know that the peop- things that people were talking about where bowen yang stuff like. That's just the case. The question is is. i'm a little. I'm a little on the fence here. Because i am very early and people got mad but we we call davison early but it came to fruition one. Two three them no. He's them and elbow when yang is a them get. Go good well. i'm really excited. The he's going to be starring in a pride and prejudice remake about like. How about like of firearms. Joel stern roadster. I want him to get that. Snl movie bump thing we're like snl people get into film and like they like blow up also linzie. We all know that you would be happy. If extent of american cinema was just reimagining austin rider. Regionals again. I would buy. It's a perfect first of all. It's a perfect store. It's a perfect story in her. It's a perfect construction. Yeah i would be happy if everything was a pride and prejudice make bowen yang them. Jane austen that would jane olson have a good time environment. I think so. Are you kidding. The dynamics of fire island she'd be scribbling away. But that's what why that. I think it's gonna be good because it's all about the like dynamics you know like you're right. Yeah you're jane. Austen loved anyways. The sharyl ireland's e bobby I think you guys. It's probably talked about this before. But i am wondering who is currently a bigger them robert. Pattinson or kristen stewart. I was recently re watching some of the toilet movies. And i'm wondering with the happiest season on case do side and then the up upcoming that man on our path side who is currently which one is currently a bigger than okay crunch crunch. This is impossible though. This is so hard. I my first comment. Though is i did like happiest season. Lindsay but i liked it pretty much fine but to say the upcoming batman is robert pattinson as happy season as kristen's thing. No there's compared with coming. Diana and the upcoming batman versus diana is a little more of a reasonable head to head i man versus diana but i would still say batman is still more commercial and still more of a sure bet than diana. Diana is like who knows what dan is going to be like and also. This has always been the case with kristen stewart. Which just like her movie. Career is kind of who we. Because it's like not who we in a way that it's like cheesy or whatever but it is kind of under the radar but she herself phenomenon. Yeah but like but he. She made a clear deneen movie. Where are you like goes into space and space jail and then there's like a survey the notions in and to be fair. They're they're the most commercial things to them have ever done. They were at the exact same level at she had a tabloid scandal. He's had maybe a tabloid scandal. Hers was more way more tab tabloid. She's kind of a gay icon at this point. He's kind of not really lately. I think she might even be more than emmy because of all these reasons. That's where i think we're going. But i think the reason kristen stewart gets more tablet coverage is due to misogyny though like kristen stewart gets more tablet coverage because it's letting like cheating scandal but the woman then like robert half now in current day she gets more tabloid scandal because she's genuinely cooler than him and she's like you know people really love to see what she's up to it's almost like the olsen twins. It's like what are they doing. They're just cool. We're just like we're just obsessed with the coolness of it. All in this weird way of like kristen stewart even like going out and about she's like settled down kind of you know but people but the people still have to see photos of her walk in the streets walking the streets thing with patents and is he still kind of a heart throb but like question. Seward is kind of hard to high who make lee is genuine levada. The only capital t. them who's the them just wondering crunchy crunch. We've gotten this call several times. is there eddie questioned. That better sums up our show. This question it's like stressing me out is demi levato the only capital t. Them who is also them and i think the answer is yes.

I think the thing that i would have least predicted. Maybe going into the season is that you would play a friendly woods. I think that i may be equally enamored with fran to you How did this even come about. Because it's not Let's say natural casting. no it's not But i kind of wanted to go for it anyway. i was just. Let's say under the influence of something in bed. Launching pretended to city and i thought to myself i'm a player i'm gonna play on update and i texted one of the writers sudi green a very good friend. I said i this crazy idea. But i think i have to play friendly on update. Then she said that's great. Let's get kyla scorsese. I was like perfect. And then the next day in addressing our head rider texted me crazy idea but i think you should play friendly. It's not did. I said Sitting ought and and then we did it. The the saturday afterwards and i was like this. This is the best part of working here. Is that you get to idiot. Something silly luik before and then have it be on tv everyone. I talked to loved it and yet there was one person sort of notable person who did not care for it and recently went on. The record is not caring for it. That's right friend. Herself has gone from any counter beach dot com and she had said that she has no interest in seeing it which i loved at the time and then i think last week. She's gone on record to say that she does not like it. And so i think that that that that's confirmation that she seen it right and the he doesn't care for it and i think that's the highest compliment. You could possibly get from some link for him. I think that's right. I think that if france liebowitz said oh my god. I love it and it's so cool to be on. Snl like it would just ruin everything. Yeah absolutely so i i. I wear as about honor that she did not like portrayal of her. I probably wouldn't either. It's like someone who was like so demographically opposite of me portrayed maybe like come on i i bet even if you were demographically right on the no she probably would have felt the same way okay. Bowen Yang on How His Journey to SNL

"Bowen yang. Thank you for joining us. Thanks so excited. This is my debut on the cbc really. Are you kidding me. I think so well they will actually know you know you know what happened after we did boehner high on. Snl someone did reach out from cbc. They're like can hop on an interview. And i might the publicists At nbc said maybe not the best idea just because people seem to be very upset fits the best not accept people even further. You understand why people were upset. I know all the reasons people are obsessed up to all of them and i apologize deeply. Montrealers love when montreal is spoken about especially in something american but the irony is that as soon as we get that acknowledgement were immediately critical of it. Like they didn't get it right. It's not good answer for us but your sketch was so good. It was silly. It was fully character that was completely inaccurate. I understand anyone being upset or taking issue with it. But i'm the same way a- anytime someone acknowledges me anytime i get any attention if it's even slightly different from the kind of attention i want. Then i get very upset. But i think one thing that a lot of people don't know about you is that you actually live in quebec and so there is a real connection. I would happen. I i grew up in. I grew up in brossard and i spoke french better that i spoke english. I like. i spoke french better than they spoke. Mandarin i like it was i was truly like one of y'all got plucked away.

Know maybe have a healthy expression of anger but in no way. Hopefully when i'm when on my best haber noam gonna meet that moment with just revenge recrimination or escalating catty bitchy behaviour. Well it's like philosopher and writer and drama teacher raymond williams wrote in the seventies that because we're exposed to so much conflict in The media we consume that we sort of become numb to it and we're accepting conflict as an illusion of change happening. I think that's so right and there's a couple other things going on. We have started. At least many of us had started to weaponize are wounded nece so we experience all sorts of different wounds especially in the gay community for all all sorts of obvious reasons and to fill powerful in charge in control. We we lash out and we we redirect that sense of wounded ness in it comes out his rage and then another important dynamic is the change in technology which our culture has not been able to absorb so that we all think we are special. Everybody's above average in every opinion matters needs to be expressed and so we've lost any sort of sense of stillness an unhealthy boredom and the ability to read and be quiet and sit still and and have our hearts cracked open in wonder..

The person wasn't wrong and so they're not a bad person because it gossip or they said something cattier mean. They just made a poor choice. And i've made lots of poor choices in my life. So that's really easy for me to emphasise empathize with so might pull them aside. Certainly nothing in public might pull them inside and let them know you know. Maybe how. I felt what my experience was. When i heard those words and depending on the moment and what the moment requires might set a boundary are on. Might you know might escalate slightly in you. Know maybe have a healthy expression of anger but in no way..

Last year, he became the show's first Chinese American cast member and one of the few openly gay cast members in SNL history. He spoke with NPR's Sam Sanders. I mean, I'm I'm I'm like it's all going to be like a shorting his cat situation, even for me where it's like we won't know if The cat's alive or dad until we open box. But, you know, I think I think it'll be great bone. Yang, for his part, did pretty great. He brought back his character, Tin Gau, the snarky Chinese trade minister. Okay. You're worried the we're stealing your identity, honey, your phone unlocks with your face blown. Yang began at SNL in 2018 as a writer. By the next season, he was in front of the camera. He's played Kim Jong un. What? That there's a letter saying Democracy is better than dictatorship. But that's not the kind of talk can get you poisoned bro and presidential candidate Andrew Yang. I'm literally giving free money to people and I'm still in sixth place impressions made possible. By his Asian identity. But Bowen has also had some really successful sketches rooted in being queer like the one where he plays a former social media manager for the Food corporation, Sara Lee. He gets in trouble for posting too much from his personal life. Yes, I did. Write this. Wow. Okay. Security downstairs stopped letting people into harness party at Sara Lee. Office way have to do better must get rid of toxic in community. Tha the's sketches, they have expanded the kinds of comedy SNL Khun do. And they've been incredibly popular. But Bowen doesn't want you to really see them is anything out of the ordinary. The more you see this, the more you'll get used to it at this point. I'm just like, Oh, really? I would love further. There'll just be a normal mid frequency response to you seeing the queer Asian person on camera being queer nation without without digging into the politics behind. That's all they conduce like. That's all bow and dozes be clear in Asian or in the same way that you don't sort of remark on the fact that a straight white CIS cast member would come on and that you don't assign those Descriptors onto them in their performance. And so, Bowen says, this season, he's maybe focused a bit less on what the audience actually thinks. I kind of don't really care about how my 10 year on the show is perceived in any particular way other than the fact that I want this to be. I want this to facilitate something better for the next person like that's that's kind of like The only duty I'm down, Teo show with this part of that this season of SNL. You will most likely see Bowen Yang a lot. He will most likely make you laugh, but just now. He's not really doing it for you..

A comedy of manners that becomes a thriller. I'm Alison Stewart joined me for all of it. We do w n I. C. It's morning edition from NPR News. I'm Noelle King and I'm Steve Inskeep. Good morning, Pennsylvania's Supreme Court ruled that the state will not accept mail in ballots that failed to have a second envelope. A secrecy envelope ballots without them are called naked ballots, and Democrats worry that this could sway a close election. Here's W. H y wise. Katie Myer near Arabian came very close to making a mistake when she mailed in her ballot for Pennsylvania's primary election in June. I read the instructions or thought I did filled it out. Put it in the envelope sealed it. And then looked and said. Wait. What's that other envelope? She ended up carefully re opening the ballot, adding the secrecy envelope and trying to re seal the whole thing. It wouldn't stick. So she taped it shut so that I was worried that it Looks like a ballad that had been tampered with. So I signed my name over where the tape was in, like two places, and I mailed it. Linda Tala, who lives outside Pittsburgh, actually did mail her primary ballot without its secrecy envelope. Like Raben. She realized her mistake after she'd seal the outer envelope. But unlike Robyn, she decided to leave it. I don't know why I was so nonchalant at that point, but I was like I said to my husband. I said, Hey, I think I have an extra envelope. Do you think that matters? And then I just like, Put it aside and we mailed them in and I never thought about it again in June Raben and two Talas different decisions didn't matter. Both the ballots were counted. But now there are new rules. And if those two women at opposite ends of the state made those same decisions with general election ballots, Ravenswood probably count and two Talas wouldn't Until this month, when the Pennsylvania Supreme Court decided the ballots should be discarded. Without the envelopes, counties. We're pretty much free to decide what to do. Paul Gronke in Oregon political science professor who directs the early Voting Information Center says the new mandate is unusual. Secretly envelopes are part of the package that is used in many states. I have never heard about balance being rejected simply because they don't use the 60 envelope. It's hard to know how widespread naked ballot are in Pennsylvania. Most counties don't track how many they received, so it's hard to draw conclusions about what will happen under stricter rules. But Frankie says one thing is certain. We do actually have clear patterns about what kinds of voters tend to be harmed or disenfranchising Those Is going to be voters of color, lower income voters, mobile voters, younger voters. These folks are gonna be hurt by these changes. Democratic voters are considered likely to cast ballots by mail than Republicans, so the party seized these new rules as a much keener threat. Rendon, Welsh, spokesman for the State Democratic Party, says As soon as staff understood the implications of the ruling on secrecy envelopes, they buckled down. This has really been an all hands on deck effort from us and the Biden team and the sea all kind of working hand in hand to make sure that we spread the word and educate voters pumping out for videos and infographics on social media and reaching out to voters. Celebrities have also been spreading the word Welsh says he feels optimistic that the numbers of people who ultimately forget their secrecy envelopes will be small. But even small numbers could matter. Four years ago, Donald Trump won Pennsylvania by just 44,000 votes less than 1%. For NPR News. "Saturday night live announced its new cast members for three new cast members for the for the new season and one of them is comedian and writer Bowen Yang right a He's a mainstay of the New York comedy scene. He's Queer. He's he's kind of famous for these kind of built this cult following these lip sync videos. He does until the end brilliant. You know he's done what a random priestly from from the devil wears Prada. He's this really funny one of Cardi B. Just take the audio from these performances and then just you know just just do a perfect sync up of these of these performances end. It's it's it's hilarious. It's something that he made his own. Yeah and what I think is really amazing about it. Is that when those things went. Viral on twitter is when he kind of became a thing right so he's like kind of one of the he's a he's a twitter created I mean superstar superstar this point. Oh yeah right I mean I mean addition to being being actual comedian doing the scene and and then last selenium Gig as a writer on SNL yes so is also on one like the skits or whatever is like Kim Jong Il Kim Jong position to be to be hoisted up and be featured player on the cast. It was blowing a amongst Asian. Americans was born yeah US position to do well. I I mean there's so much resistance on that showed actually put putting an Asian American right on the cast right. This is a long time so yeah and he actually it turns out. He is the first person of Chinese descent right to be on the cast right there have been there actually have been other Asian American members. Fred is he stars thunders Japanese atrocities. That's CR- episode of I should do you. Who are you like bloodline or someone or not line loveless. It's like who do you. Who Do you think you are. Who you think you're yeah who the hell yeah no that show is It's the one that checks people's People's genealogy and like that show is that he's episode of the trip because roots finding your roots with with a skip gates hairless yeah yeah yeah okay but that one's a trip because his whole life he thought he was he was a quarter Javanese America or something and then and then he found that he was actually Korean but Japanese Korean or Korean court like his his grandfather Korean Japan had had a career career on the stage in Japan had Japanese stage team actually looking into the history. He's actually create this is also during the Occupation Korea. Japan would probably say they're all Japanese. No let's not go crazy story though yeah and then then actually BEF- before Rob Schneider Filipino yeah and has a has acknowledged and embraced that in various ways not not not necessarily somebody these days or you know we're raising the flag hi aggressively claiming but yeah so so nevertheless this is a milestone. Boeing Yang is the first Asian Casper that no one is going to be like oh he he's Asian Asian ladies clearly like like fito typically Asian right and last name Yeah Yeah Yeah I mean. This is kind of the running theme of this episode. At this point or Yang Yeah young passing. I will say speaking of Yang's right. I am Kinda wondering to what degree the the rise the arrival of you will Andrew Yang had anything to do with them deciding to impart anyway kind of like say you know we probably need somebody to play Asian. People roll like regularly now. I joked about twitter. I was like in the year twenty nineteen not that this would have stopped them before honestly because they've had I mean all manner of people playing like Weird Asians but I feel like this is Andrew. Yang thing might be happening enough that they need to address this on on and and have an actual person twenty nineteen of Asian descent playing
