"The wildfires that ripped through boulder county Colorado on Thursday left behind historic damage nearly a thousand homes were destroyed and maybe more We turn now to someone reckoning with that damage Taylor Korn is a native of boulder county The home she rented there burned Thursday along with nearly all her belongings She was at work when the fire started approaching I work about 5 ten minutes away from my house our power had been in and out all morning the winds were just crazy As I was leaving I watched a huge piece of fence like blow off and roll across the street But I went to work a friend of mine who lives in downtown boulder could see the smoke and sent me a video and was like wow this looks really close to the dark horse which is where I work Is this sort of thing normal where you live The wind is not We haven't had any moisture And so many months I mean when I was little we Halloween was like my parents hated what I wanted to buy a Halloween costume because when we went trick or treating we had to wear our snowsuits over them anyways It would be snowing It would be freezing And you know we've made it to January and we just had our actual first snow Wow so no snow We had like a slight dusting maybe a month and a half ago but nothing stuck And it's just dry So when did you realize that this was a danger to your house I had gotten a call on my concept of time is really off right now But sometime around noon I think my landlord had called me and said let's get out of the house And that was the first thing she said And I was like what She was like there's a fire you've got to get out of the house My first thought was just that I had just got two puppies And I had just had them with me taking them out And then I put them in their crates before I left for work My roommate was going to be home at three to let them out and my first thought was to just go and get them as soon as she said that So I just left work immediately and I drove the highway She had told me was already closed So you could never make it back to your house Well yeah there's one road I pulled up to to turn onto and it was just I could see the whole field just on fire I couldn't get anywhere close enough to get out of my car to walk to get there Have you been able to go back home Were you able to recover anything I have not been able to go home When I found out I couldn't get into my house I had called the non emergency police signed to report my address and to report that my dogs were in there They sent photos of our House and it's just all gone Even looking at it at first I couldn't tell what angle or what side of the house they took the picture from Until I found my bed I could see my bed frame I have a picture where I know that that is my bed frame and I know that that was our cement wall in the backyard And I can see that but it's just still impossible to even believe that that was my house that I loved and you know I don't really have a lot of family I don't have a lot of my parents both died and anything I had that was part of them was in that house Wow Are you staying with friends your family or anybody Yeah I'm saying with a friend of mine and her boyfriend have an extra room And they're people I've known for very very long time So it's the second best to feel like home But do you know what's next for you It's so much to process I have such an overwhelming incredible community of support in this town My landlord I used to work for as well as how I knew her and her house was in the same area She lost her house too And she is still calling me every day to say you know she's trying to find a place I have a room for you if you ever need it Are we going to find you a place to live It's just I was so scared for the first day That I would never come be able to rebuild an entire life It seems insane Yeah But I have enough people that have comforted me and going to help me because I have absolutely no idea what comes next Taylor thank you again for sharing your story and we're all.

Serial Killer: Scott Lee Kimball - Part 4

"All right captain last episode we were starting to get into some of the physical collected against Scott and forming these cases against him regarding these missing persons. One of the items we have yet to hit on is it involves his phone records. So this reveals to law enforcement that Scott. The last person he spoke to on the evening of February seventeenth two thousand and three was missing person. Jennifer Marcum then. His phone went offline until February twentieth. Scott maintain that he had gone to the mountains for several days and turned his cell phone off. This is the same story that he kinda gave regarding Casey. But detectives noted that Jennifer's phone was also inactive for the same three day period of time after that there were calls made from Jennifer's phone this too Scott into several other people. This is before it went offline permanently now to the investigators it seemed obvious as Scott was using Jennifer's phone for the purpose of misdirecting law enforcement in an attempt to make appear as if she was still alive for some period of time after she went missing but we still have other crimes other murders to discuss. We have evidence in the Lianne. Emory disappearance Liens car was found abandoned with all of her stuff in it in eastern Utah but Leeann was nowhere to be found receipts for credit card charges to her card made in California. Bore a signature. That was not her handwriting. Detectives spoke to the unnamed inmate who knew Scott in prison the one who gave them the information about how Casey had been killed. This inmate told them that Scott said that he killed Lianne while they were hiking and Bryce Canyon and eastern Australia Scott said that he had stripped her nude or had her stripped nude kneel down and shot her in the head execution style. Now captain you know how this P. O. S. Scott operates right. He has an answer for everything. Scott told detectives that he did not kill Lianne. He said that members of a drug gang were the ones they had executed her and he was only a witness but he didn't could go to law enforcement he didn't get involved and even though he's already involved with the FBI he doesn't tell them. I witnessed a murder. He he only has to make up the story when confronted with something that he told somebody else right now. Remember the terrible this this angers and saddens me like you wouldn't believe remember the terrible accident on the ranch. I'm talking about the accident. When Scott's ten year old son Justin when a two hundred pound metal great quote fell on him right? You can see photos of this little boy in the hospital on Dateline and it's it's pretty horrible so in a stroke of bad luck for Scott but truly a blessing. After two weeks in a coma. His son woke up and was able to tell what he remembered. He says his father told him to turn around. And Dig a hole near this great and then all of a sudden the great fell on him then he remembered being in the jeep. Remember Scott is driving the son to the hospital. He remembers being in the jeep and he says on the way to the hospital. My Dad's Scott. He's pushing me by the face pushing me out of the vehicle by the face. Yeah I mean this is when he said it the first time. All here's this horrible accident than Scott's GONNA drive it son to the hospital and on the way. The kid falls out of the car you go. Something's not right here. Yeah it's it. What a coincidence that you would have to near death accidents back back that day. I can understand that. Sometimes this stuff happens in a state of panic. Maybe you're rushing trying to get him to the hospital but not what this guy not with this guy. There are not these. These incidents two failed attempts of murder so the Boulder County prosecutors boulder bitches. Thank you unfortunately. They did not feel that they had enough to actually charge. Scott with with what looks very much like an attempted murder of his son. This is in part because doctors indicated that his head injuries were so severe. They would not consider him to be a reliable witness. That is bullshit though. These might not be reliable memories that he has. Of course. We're no idiots and we can see all this other stuff together that that. That's probably very likely what happened. I know the prosecutors felt the same way and we're very saddened that they could not bring this type of charge against this man. We should also point out and it's no coincidence that at the time of this accident there was a sixty thousand dollar life insurance policy on the little boy was Scott listed as the sole beneficiary. Hear me out. Why don't you just want to roll the dice? I'm listening? Roll the dice right. We have we have to like I said to attempts of murdering this ten year. Old Boy And yes maybe his memory is not maybe he's not going to be Maybe he's not GonNa meet received as super credible but once you stack on the other piece of evidence that we have a motive the motive being a sixty thousand dollar. Pay Out for the death of this child. Roll the dice. Because what you. What do you have to lose? Well a couple things and we talked about this a few weeks ago. You do run the risk of the double jeopardy charge. Where where maybe at some point you actually do believe that you have the proper evidence to charge and convict him and if you try him now and you can't successfully convict them. You can't try again later. What I guarantee you. This is what my gut tells me and I would bet this man's beef farm on it not my own farm because the skies a liar but I bet you what happened. Captain is behind closed doors. They probably did take a chance. Because like you said what do you have to lose? This is what they probably took a chance on. Let's tell Scott that we know exactly. What the hell he was doing and see if it scares him enough that he's willing to plea to it or to a lesser charge right. Because you know you get this man in a room and you go look dude. Your son told us that you are the one that told him to get in that whole and then the great falls on them. Your son told us you were driving him to the hospital when he remembers you pushing him by the face out of the moving vehicle and this almost kills him and we also found a paper trail that you stood to gain sixty thousand dollars. Should that little boy die? You're hoping you can scare him into a plea bargain at that chant and I bet you they took that chance and Scott is just. It wasn't going to to fall for

Climate Liability Lawsuits Could Help With Costs Of Adapting To A Hotter Earth

"In New York world leaders attended a United Nations summit on Climate Change. UN Secretary General Antonio Gutierrez opened the meeting by challenge in in countries to make bold plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions immediately. We can do it limiting warming to one point. Five degrees is still possible receivable but it will require fundamental transformations in all aspects of society. Are we gonNA food use Lens fool our transport what's and followed economies all of that to put the brakes on greenhouse gas emissions and beyond debating a plan some are also beginning to wrestle with a big question who is responsible people for the effects of global warming. NPR's Rebecca Hersher reports that a growing number of lawsuits seek to answer that question there about a dozen significant lawsuits against oil companies companies in the US right now. My goldberger runs the Saban Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University. All of these lawsuits have been filed in the last couple of years. There's the one filed by the state of Rhode Island against twenty-one companies including Exxon. BP Shell and Chevron there are the cases filed by the cities of San Francisco Oakland and Baltimore and by San Miguel in Boulder County Colorado and in each case the city or state or county is suing one or more fossil fuel companies over the impacts of climate change. It's a wide range of impacts many of the lawsuits do focus on sea level rise and coastal storms but it also includes drought wildfire flooding in Colorado. The lawsuits alleged that the oil companies should help pay for the cost of dealing with all of that now in the future because the cases allege oil oil companies have known for a long time that burning fossil fuels causes global warming in an email to NPR spokesperson for the main oil industry trade group wrote in part that the industry is quote actively addressing the complex global challenges climate change through robust investments in technology innovation efficiency improvements and cleaner fuels rules. Berger says the suits are somewhat similar to pass cases brought against other industries. The comparison that most people are most familiar with is the comparison to tobacco the massive tobacco settlement hinged on similar legal arguments that tobacco companies were partially responsible for the harm caused by cigarettes. Other industries have faced similar suits. It's with a variety of outcomes lead paint a specis gun an opioid manufacturers in fact this is the second wave of climate change suits against oil companies a previous set of cases in the early two thousands failed. Berger says something key has changed in the intervening years the science the ability to attribute attribute particular impacts to climate change has vastly improved as climate models have gotten more sophisticated and as climate change itself has gotten more present doesn't in our daily lives the connection between say destructive hurricanes and the warming earth has gotten easier to argue and climate related lawsuits are showing up in other parts the world two cases in the Netherlands France and India have all looked the legal system to require companies and governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and then there's the argument that climate change is a human rights issue good morning everyone. My name is Maryelle chick CBA Khasan. I'm the research nurse in November of last year representatives from the Human Rights Commission of the Philippines sat in a room in London and listen to people tell their stories of surviving the massive typhoons that hit that country one after another in recent years but Kasan recounted how her family survived Typhoon Haiyan in two thousand thirteen my grandmother everyone was just praying. We were saying saying the second floor of the hotel. So from where we were we could see the water levels levels rising until the ground floor was fully submerged. You can see the water the cars floating when the water went down she and her her family walked hours home through streets covered in debris and bodies because explained how the storm wrecked the economy of her home city cut off drinking water and and killed thousands of people she was one of the hundreds of people who testified before the Human Rights Commission at multiple hearings around the world. The inquiry relied on the same team underlying climate science as recent lawsuits have researched that connects fossil fuel companies to the effects of climate change including stronger tropical storms and although the commission is not itself illegal body. Its final report later this year. We'll still carry weight explains Burger. The most important thing that could come out of it is is a declaration of violation of human rights and you know that's a powerful thing. Nobody wants to be accused of being human rights violator. It's one piece of a nascent nascent push to change the business models of the world's fossil fuel companies and as climate science gets more sophisticated and climate change is ever more present in the lives lives of average people that pressure is likely to keep increasing Rebecca Hersher N._p._R.
