"Has a sense of like, kind of being stuck in time, which which I love and all throughout all New England in a sense. You know, there's, you know, it's an awful as of, you know, the US probably has the, the longest kind of the history of just, you know, ways of doing things and yeah, impeach him here. We have a town meeting once a year like that's where everything is volte In person and it's just like it's just like, you know, 1785 like why are we doing this? No, but it's just it's tradition and its culture. And yeah, you know things things just change so much lower here. Yeah, if it was somewhere else, I feel like wage, they would have paved. All these, you know, like but like even driving here, it's like last few miles is just gravel, and I'm sure for the next few miles, or however, many miles is just gravel like that doesn't exist in a lot of other places. And I think that part of it is, is off like it's fantastic. Yeah, to have that kind of thing. Here, it seems like it's always the same. It's always green. And it's always, it's always winter. I guess. I don't know. Yeah. It's a very, very bizarre Place. Yeah. No. That's, I mean, I love I love our lifestyle here and I have had the ability to travel the world and I still every time I get home from the airport and like open the door and just smell like crisp cool air and it's quiet. Like all you hear some birds chirping? It's like, oh wow. Like I I know I want to live here. Yeah, it's yeah. The simple things that I think you, you enjoy most. Yeah. So kind of as like, a wrap up here like, what time What do you have coming up for your season? What are you looking forward to? I mean just got back from Kenya. You just want on about like that's you got a lot of things already knocked off. I think. But what what's coming up? Yeah, a lot it's a busy summer especially coming out of last year as the first time I'd ever just spent a summer in one place like we took some camping trips. We didn't leave the state of Vermont. Yes, I'm heading out to Oregon next month or see my family. I haven't been out been out there in a while and then down to be WR. San Diego back here for rooted, Vermont out to Colorado, for spt, gravel down to Asheville, for be home, for a shovel back to Vermont for my Overland, and then my wife and I put on that event and in a September. So it's a lot of travel and then I guess a bigger thing that's coming up is my wife's giving birth to our first child at the end of December. So, we've got some time, but yeah, it's, it's been kind of fun, but also tiring to, just be back on the road, I forgot. Wow. I forgot what it's like to be to be traveling and, you know, now also working, you know. So you're trying to balance work with travel with, you know, chores at home. And so, it's been a. Yeah, I thought last thing is learning here, but it's again ahead, had a balance. Everything, do you? Do you have a plant? Like, I mean, you're having a kid that is, you guys are having a kid. That's a huge change in your life. Like if you obviously thought about it like how is that going to change what you do? I mean obviously, yeah, oh yeah. Have you talked to other cyclist that have had kids like wild? Cuz I mean you're Thirty you're not old like that's month. That's a lot..

"And like not like completely in the Boondocks for your kind of in The Boondocks, like, what is it? Like, just being out here in comparison to log, in California, like those kind of places. I mean, New England is so different in so many ways. You know, I, my wife's from Vermont. So we came out here and 2016 to start like, looking for a place and can instantly fell in love with it. Just because, you know, for one it was much more affordable than where I grew up and Bam, you know things, you know, voice want to Gardens and trees and yeah, everything's green. We don't want it. The grass, Jonathan Bandits, it's High Desert. You know, how much you struggle to like grow a zucchini? Yeah. And you're watering and all the time and you spending a ton of money on, you know, your water bill to grass green. But I just I guess I really fell in love with also the the resourcefulness and the hardness of the people, especially in the Northeast Kingdom, it's like very much like do it yourself, you know, figure it out. Like there's things had issues with the house, you know, pipe broke, and I called a plumber. October and they're like, oh we can be there in January. I'm like okay how cuz I called the neighboring like, you know, sure enough. He's not a plumber, but came over and, you know, helping with the plumbing project. So I loved that, I'm constantly learning just like life skills. Yeah. Cuz it's something that I avoided a lot being a pro Road cyclists. I just wasn't, you know, I didn't have a house of my own, I wasn't working on stuff. I was just trying to, you know, train and race track. But they're just simple things like, you know, rust, run up. And then I never had rust on my chain. Yeah, I didn't, you never funny. I never even thought about, I never ride in the rain. Your cereal doesn't go stale. You know, there's no mold. Anything blushes? I mean the kind of the the high West wait, but your cereal doesn't go stale because it's so dry really oyster. Yeah, I had no idea that it was a little things like that. Like I had to learn real rainy ride here. Like you need to come back and you know while you're saying cuz we're else is going to be asking to be rusted in the morning just especially in the winter when I you know family like salt in the roads like oh yeah. Miss having a dog. I said, oh yeah are like yeah. Beats it up. Yeah. Yeah I mean there's been just changes of learning to live on the east coast. You know simple things like takes my biggest enemy Tech's. I'm so scared of Lyme disease but I got seven the other day on the ride. Oh my God. That is. It's brutal now. It's so yeah. Yeah. So there's little things like that. I guess I've really come to love the changing of the seasons. Yeah. Bend, you know, has summer and winter has like fall but it's it's sunny 300 days a year or something. You know. It's a very bright you know, place to live. Yeah. But New England. I love the the changing of the seasons and every season is so distinct and short. Yeah other than you know, the transition Seasons seem to yes. Yeah, February March and November seem to drag, but, you know, it's like I'm looking out our apple trees and like, you know, come mid-september. It's like we're rushed to pick all the apples and before, you know, it, you know, apples are gone and it's like you rush to, you know, Palm Things in the garden and you know, you rush to get your skis ready for winter time..

"Country race, but maybe a log. They're kind of Adventure type race or, you know, some endurance, mountain bike races, you know, one thing I guess since, and I've noticed this post, I had a crash in 2019 in the spring of a concussion to kind of push you to retire in and a buy that bottom. I went up and wrote a day and Kingdom Trails on my fat bike. Yeah, and it's amazing how much still fatigued. I feel from trail riding really because you know, a lot of the symptoms that I had for my concussion were were Visual and like vestibular. So just the the fact that especially in in New England, the trails are so crowded like crowded, like there's trees right next to, you know, where I grew up in Oregon, like the trails are open and fast and so different smooth. Yeah, and it was just amazing how fatiguing it was something I still notice. Even at that rule of three race. The last there was like twenty miles total of six track, but it's all pretty nice, you know, machine-made single-track. Yeah, but coming out of that last section realized just how like, mentally tired. I was that like turn into physical fatigue, just from like myself having to concentrate. So much harder for me post-concussion than it was Prior. Yeah. You know on a gravel race it's almost never an issue cuz the you know your view is so much more broad you're not focusing on things right next to you off. But you know I have noticed that riding singletrack and you know, Trails have changed a lot since when I grew up, you know, a trail back home in Bend called the whoops. Yeah, yes. Yeah, but yeah. So when I first started mountain biking like that was like a fun trail in the heart of jumps like hit all of them and I went back two years ago and I was like, if you don't send it, you're screwed. Yeah. You're like on the top, it's like, you know, the people who are riding mountain bikes have taken it to such a level of extreme, not extreme like Perfection. But like, in order to hit that jump, you have to take this berm all the way at the top, get all the speed, you know, and it's like, they've been a part of it's because of the bikes have gotten so much better..

"A cruise, did an article on, I think bikepacking help you out and put our, you know, our spot as a, you know, place to stay right. But it's been crazy to see how many people are. I've noticed a lot more people bikepacking recently compared to years past, whether they're doing the beat EXL course or, you know, cross Vermont Trail. Yeah. And again, a lot of people just don't like very, you know, basic bikes that they decided like hey instead of, you know, going on a trip to overseas long, do a trip across Vermont. So I've seen I've seen that growth which is cool to see cuz you know it's so fun to hear people's bike pack stories cuz they're often times. You know you have amassed. And yeah there's actually a group that stayed home of weeks ago and the guys. Okay. I'm I like I said, it's making a lot of noise and I took it to set off and I was like going to help him with it and all of his bearings in his friends, like, literally, I cut in half and he's like, like I cannot fix this song. To go to a bike shop cuz this is a little bit over my head now, spell spare bearings. So it's been cool to like, just have those encounters four people. Yeah. You know, who are often, you know, probably not prepared for the child, but they're still, they're still giving it a go which is awesome, I think that's why. Yeah, that that is why it's really cool and a lot of ways, I think and I have seen a lot more people, I guess. So I guess I should like, almost rephrase the way that I'm, like, looking back cuz I'm looking at it from like the mountain bike side of thing and like, people were complaining when people were buying bikes, or at least, you know, you see the few negative comments out of the hundred positive comments, for sure where people are like, oh, the trailer package too crowded. Now there's too many people out on and it's just like, I just don't see it that way..

I guess you never think about that, like, looking at, looking at it, from the outside. And I think, especially right now, like people are phone number. Just on this kind of thing because it's to me, it feels like the tour is really hot this year and like people are into Road riding right now and and getting out and I guess people just don't think about all the things that go into being like in that situation, you know. Yeah, yeah. There's a, there's just so much that happens around, you know, a world routine might have 25. When I was at anyhow. I think we had, you know, Twenty Eight Riders and I think we had like a hundred and thirty people total in the team. Most people our staff and, you know, Logistics and you know, drivers and chefs. And it's, it's amazing how I don't want to use the word bloated in a bad way. How big teams have gotten yeah, that's not infrastructure, the same system because it wasn't that long ago that you would show up with, you know, to team cars and all the Riders would sit in the back. And now, you know, there's buses and food trucks and it's grown a lot, which is made the sport more professional. And that's, you know, a large reason why people are going faster. It's just become more optimized, but yeah, gravel is still very grunge which is, which is cool to see. That's what makes it cool. I think right now that's like part of it for sure is like wage. Anybody that does gravel rides is kind of in the know. Anyway, the thing I wanted to ask you about working with Wahoo's like obviously last year there was a huge cycling. Boom. Like tons of people buying bikes people getting out thar. It doesn't feel like it's that much busier to me as far as like seeing people out on the road seeing people buy like cuz I remember like I own a shop and being in the shop were like, okay, we're selling a million bucks..

"So you've talked before. About how before drag race you lived as a trans woman for five years and then you decided that that's or you realize that's not actually who you are. Can you just talk about your early experience gender and what led you to think that you might be a trans woman. Oh yeah of. Course why i to reiterate into the versus me figuring out that i'm not. I think it was more of like discovering that. I'm like all of these things you know what i'm saying. Expansion the weirdly. Like i think the trans person that i was is a huge part of who i am now. It's just like a more elevated self perception and then also like some description as far as like gender goes that's where gender neutrality i think comes in right. I just remember growing up. Well i i grew up with all women. So four women I remember being younger. And like the little gameboy and we always like wanted to be a girl. Because it'd be easier. I think we'll have those thoughts a little bit at some point in our life like oh like dealing with the persecution of it or likes negatively or like the self inflicted ideas that we put on ourselves because of other people's opinions we automatically assume that it's a bad thing and how much easier beats like. Just be a girl so then you could wear pretty and for things and you could like boys and you know all these things that you want. Do play with barbies etc. So that was kind of a star. I think and then i met a guy when i was like eighteen. Who was really interested in eureka and i clicked with him really well so then like i was already doing drag and i was living with a trans woman at the time so it just seems like so many factors of my mind mike. My thought process was adding up to this like okay. You're not leaving your authentic self. Maybe this is something you should discover and then the boy comes in. Because and i call him a boy because he turned out not to be a man. Okay reading like in allegra boswell sands so the boy was also there for like that. Validation i guess my having someone to support me through it because he was more interested in eureka. So that's why. I kind of brought that up because the thought process was more from like growing up and then living with the transvaal man and just having those ideas kind of for a long time anyway dating him he he really isn't do eureka. Your drag character and so it's like you're getting all the validation about the feminine side of noon that an interesting. It was interesting but it was like. I really liked him. You know and he was like the first time i ever had like had a guy that could consider like a real interested in mike relationship type situation and saddam was just like you know fell head over heels really quickly so i would have done just about anything but i was already thinking these things. I can't really say like. Oh well i did it. Because i met this guy no i had the quote unquote balls. Elevate or the lack thereof to push myself to do it. Because i had like this validation from the opposite sex or however you want to describe the gender of that situation. I don't know how would talk about that.

But I think you could also categorize that, as that also gets a little bit of a classic block genre Do in America does Which I love about Christopher Cross. Christopher Cross is straight What they call Yacht Rock. And basically what? What? The foundation of yacht Rock guys is in the late seventies, early eighties, you know that a C that a C music that you heard of the late seventies and early eighties, and that's What they call yacht Rock. But I was signing up Feel like we feel like we could live his hormonal high school days. Like literally every week on this show, you know, Boswell also taught me how to whistle when I was in second grade, you know, whistle between your teeth. You know she didn't do it. I can't do it my fingers over to my teeth. It's kind of it's a fruitless effort. Always. You don't know that in closing. I know I gotta run here. But The whole music thing. Music what you when you listen to old songs it always and that's what I try to do six little bit not ever Saturday. I wanted to bring to take people back to where they were having the most fun and you don't get to stay there. There's no doubt about that. You have to come back to reality, but it's pretty damn good for 3.5 minutes to remember what you were doing. Basically, every time you heard Song in 1980 or 18, 81, or wherever mad and that, John Before we go, we'll never be lost in music. Here we go. Two things number one. The trick in life is to make sure that where you live right now is the most fun where you are right now. "The i will say the mobility of the the platform is also really nice like that people can listen just when they're a lot of our listeners. Say they just listened on the way to work or they listened while they're doing experiments or You know while they're writing the trainer or all these different things and it's just so fun to imagine like all the spaces in which boom is being propagated. So i think those have been the best parts for me. Yeah and even some professors have used it as a tool in the classroom in students listened to in talk about what they've learned from. And that's been really. Yeah that's been really cool to as another way that the podcast is being used as well is the here. I agree with you that it's it's interesting. You can talk with people all around the world and you also see people from all around the world are listening you get the stats that you see how many people listened from different countries and it's interesting thing that people might be commuting in presley prosciutto lor ever and listening to your podcast which is which is quite amazing technology and and this this little good parts and i hear you. You really find it meaningful. But what are the downsides of podcasting for you yes. It's definitely good to to reflect on this as well so for me. The only thing that i can think of is sometimes it can be difficult to manage the podcast with our phd work But mostly because we love it as we're probably as you probably gather in wanna be doing more with it and doing more for the community through it. And i find it very hard sometimes to prioritize my other work which is necessary if i want to graduate eventually. What about you hannah. I think that's a very probably the number one downside And i love the audio one other. Like sort of maybe technical thing is. I love the audio format but sometimes it can be hard. We even just now had sort of a time where there's a delay and like we all talking at once but don't mean to be your don't know it so i do wish like if there was some way to like have live recordings. Were we did a couple of live recordings with the podcast which was really exciting. And i think just being able to see. The other person is huge. So the only downsides or that a lot of times. We don't get to see the other person that were interviewing And that can be hard just for a lot of different reasons. But we've started to do some some zoom interviews so that we can actually have some video feedback while we're talking to someone Which is a really nice. But i think listen as ultimate wish would be to be able to do all these interviews in person and get to meet these people in researchers and see the labs are working in the spaces that working in. Yeah i i agree with those. Sometimes it's difficult when you don't see in. I've been also thinking whether i sit at the video. It makes it a little bit more complex. You need to pay attention to. What's the camera sometimes. And maybe this more things to go wrong in technology side on the. I'm thinking the same. That would be nice to see the people and if we move to the next west Is the role of podcast in science communications at the moment and in the future. Yeah i think. I can have many different roles. Obviously disseminating information is the big one. But i think it can be done in a lot of different ways Like i guess for different ince's like technical information for technical audience or taking technical or scientific findings and communicating them to War general audience. Or you know taking general information in tailoring it to a scientific audience. Which is something that hannah are excited about So we try to do that. With episodes that support diversity in science or career advice or support like mental health and mentorship or one of our favorite topics which is overcoming failure. We're also really Passionate about design thinking and some of these other skills that we can help bring into a community that might necessarily hear about it all the time. I was only going to add that. It's been we've talked about the community that around the podcast around bio mechanics. That's been really amazing And i think as most those time. Sort of design thinking workshops. It also doing the podcast in sharing. These learnings has taught us a lot about how we communicate as scientists and how that differs for lay audiences or different audiences so being able to sort of teach that and give that back to the community is something that we see as an opponent. Important role for our podcast. And and how do you see in the future of podcasting of audio forum at the end. And where do you see. See podcasting evolving from from this kind of. It's still in the beginning. So what's your prediction of future. This is a great question and it it sort of parallels a question that we always end our episodes with by asking our guest. What they're most excited about for the future of bio mechanics so we love sort of future thinking and big ideas And i think it will really be a It will continue to be a useful and powerful way to deliver content to people whether that's General audiences or lay audiences or you know experts in fields. I think it's been. We've seen it reach that spectrum and we're excited to continue putting content out for for all of that audience Melissa mentioned different events that we're we've hosted like the design thinking workshop but we also posted a live podcast recording. And we're just really excited thinking about these other avenues of taking going beyond the podcast. I think the podcast has been an amazing foundation and launch pad with which we'd like to start prototyping some of our you know bigger crazier ideas and really building on this community. Our communication skills And really changing the culture. I think that's something. I'm super excited about is being able to Influence the scientific culture whether that's young scientists people been in the field forever Just getting to reach them and share. These new ideas start different discussions and kind of just You know one thing would be encouraging failure and making it less taboo to talk about it. So i'm excited about those things in the future.

"Researchers useful and relevant information that does not pay into formal content limited space of scientific publications. And here's your host researcher and entrepreneur. Taken it well come everyone. We have an interesting episode as we to hear a story from other sports science podcast hosts so in this episode we have to these students from stanford university menacing boss will and hannah o'day in their broadcasts called bio mechanics of our minds. They talked researchers around the world about the exciting field of bio mechanics. We get to hear other got started. What kind of challenges they have faced. What do they like most in podcasting. And what would be their advice. The researchers who are considering starting broadcast ladies and gentlemen least welcome. Melissa bhosle an hana-hoe day. welcome son hannah. Thanks for having us or super excited to be here. Yeah great to have you so so you have a also podcast called boom bio mechanics on our minds. Could you tell more about your podcast. Yeah of course. We're happy to talk about the canucks on our minds Which we refer to as boom and so on boom we talked to researchers all around the world out by mechanics and we talk about their research and but we also talk about overcoming failures and collaborations and open science and a lot of other topics that might be interest To the scientific community or just the general population so he tried to cover a span of different of different topics. That's good and i was looking through your your episodes and you have punished. Bonus episodes you have student voices you have excellent episodes. So could you tell more about these formats. What what are they and along. They are in so different formats. Were really an innovation as we were going along we started with sort of our base episode which includes different segments where we talk about failure. We talk about little bits of we liked to call them at the beginning of the episode where we have different updates from research groups and talk about different research. Findings am entered. The main meat of the episode is our interview with our buy. We can't expert or or someone interesting Related to the field and then So that's sort of our main episodes As you mentioned we have these other bonus episodes that we release At other times that might be shorter or highlight different. Initiatives like we highlighted. Paul vitas national mechanics. Day one of those bonus episodes. Then we have the student voices segment which is really exciting. And gets students involved in interviewing other students or researchers or people in the field and has been really awesome to to see the community involved and so the student voices and of those basic episodes that i our main episodes. I mentioned earlier. Those are released every month. And then The bonus episodes are exactly what they are. Bonus they're released at various times. Then you said that you came along when he started podcasting. How did you. How did you end up doing for example student voices. Who where did the idea for these. These come from yeah. We started talking with at least mcfadden from stanford health and she is really excited about the podcast and wanted to think of a way that we could get other students involved and so this kind of came about through a brainstorm with her and thinking we should just let other students Take over the podcast and be able to really shine a spotlight on other students and the interest of other students working known in around the world on different researchers starting other initiatives. And so you know. Hannah and i spend a lot of time working on the main Episodes and so for us. It's also great to be able to showcase additional initiatives where other people can do that in and sort of Take on take on those episodes themselves and it's been really fun. Sounds slick idea. I also planning some some other formats and and let's see when when i get them out. So so why did you start. Podcast in in the very beginning. Yeah that's a great question. So we started the podcast as an initiative through the international society of bio mechanics so at the time i was the student representative and thinking of ways to sort of bring the international community together more and improve accessibility to the amazing research. That's going on in by mechanics around the world So i was just getting into podcast at that time and i thought maybe that could be a great route to do that. And so i remember sitting in lab and thinking that idea coming to mind. And then i saw hannah and i was like okay. This is has the perfect person to ask to join. Because i usually passionate about science communication and a really creative in fun person to be around and she was basically. Just like yeah. Let's do it. That sounds great But maybe hannah can give some more insight as to why she said yes. I love talking about this moment. Because i truly can like picture the day like it was yesterday just sitting most nice it pretty close to each other. Maybe like what like six feet apart which we could probably still be sitting next to each other in these times because we'd be socially distance but melissa just walked over to my desk and asked me if i would ever be interested in starting a podcast in i had. I am not a podcast. Listener are wasn't a podcast listener at the time and But i was really really excited to work on this amazing project and i am passionate about science communication and i thought wow what better way than to do this with a really fun person like melissa. Really knowledgeable about the field and And just someone who. I think you know we might talk about this a little bit later on but like who just shares the same sort of energy and like passion for Generation and what. Melissa has that. I think sometimes i lack is just a. She takes the initiative. Did she just goes with it. Gets right down to actionable steps and so that was really exciting to me. Because sometimes i get stuck in like thinking space or something and don't actually ever get to doing anything so the whole whole thing. I'm so excited. That i said yes and it's been so awesome to do and Yeah and just be able to..

Steelers’ Perfect Season Comes to an End With Loss to Washington

"Or game tonight. The undefeated steelers hosting the washington. Football team ben. Roethlisberger and alex smith go and head to head. Second quarter all steelers early. James washington to catch the steelers while received some of the best in the business with run out the catch all been has to get the ball in their hands. They know exactly what to do with it. Fourteen nothing pittsburgh. Meanwhile from the comeback player of the year alex smith. That's the last thing we want to see bleeding profusely after being cleared. It's the other leg to quick nap. Critical moment final seconds of the first half of the clock. Ticking down. Alex smith getting sacked on a third-down play. No timeouts left the trying to run the field goal team out but the clock is going to be stopped by the officials and this may have been sneaky from alex smith. this sneaky. good better and move by. Alex realized that he doesn't have any time outs left and if they used the ball in play to probably not going to be able to get the feel law so retards off with the football. They got to stop the clock in the points. Before the you take a look. Ron rivera's yelling everybody's yelling but we're going to show it to you here. Watch alex smith again. Sneaky veteran move the official saying. Give me the ball. Alex smith is saying. I got other ideas. He takes that one himself. They have to look. He's laughing he knows. Exactly what is doing common knows what he's doing and in the end it results in three medical points. Dustin hopkins forty nine yards. It's up it's good. Fourteen three at the have a little momentum shift now oakland drive of the third smith. Watch cam simms. This might have been the biggest play for the washington football team in this game. And don't just take my word for mike. Tomlin talked about this after the game. Felt like he was a real turning point thirty yards on the catch and run a big first down in that would lead to this. How about logan thomas to the one converted quarterback out of college logan thomas with some great hands being able to get down to the one he's really turned into a professional title. They were punching in premier. So fourteen steelers fourth quarter at seventeen ten at smith. It's thomas wide open worldwide. That's a busted covers right there but don't fault the waas to football team alex smith to taking advantage of the miscues by the steelers. So we're all even now the steelers of a fourth and one on the twenty eighth. They're kick chris. Boswell is out the rookie. Matt right is there. And so mike tomlin elects to go for it a throw was to anthony mcfarland his miscue there and the washington football team takes over on downs and that leads to. This happened this catch. This is a big time catch right here by camps and being able to survive the ground one handed grab pressure situation. Can't do it any better than that. That's a big first down later in the drive. Dustin hopkins from forty five away at the first looks. It's going to hook but then it hangs and it's good to washington up twenty two seventeen but mike tomlin had used his timeouts. Well they will going to have plenty of time. But there's no time when this happens a no deflections your the game washington. Football team's defensive line. Being able to get their hands in passing lanes four passes from that group to reaper. For montesquieu it'll be no perfect season. Washington wins

Voter Suppression On This Year's Highly Contested Presidential Election

"Want to turn to Ah, question received on Twitter from Nancy Boswell. She talked about good expression and some of the court cases some of the lines so Gatto Overseeing Are you seeing? What is the fascination water to expect us to do that? I think we certainly has some concerns about some of the things that we see in some of the rhetoric around, especially having people at polling places trying to either block access to or just do things that are intimidating to voters. I think that you know, Taylor mentioned kind of taking a look at Lessons learned this election on. I think that on the on the front of voter intimidation and some of these other issues, I think you know the need to revisit some of the federal legislation that provides protections in the election process and prohibit some of the practices that we've seen. This election will be helpful as we come out of this, but I think by and large election officials are prepared to handle these situations. They Been working to stay local and federal level on this, making sure there's appropriate coordination with law enforcement, Teo, you know, to deal with any issues that come off. I want to stress that if folks see something they should report it. Ah, absolutely. But they should not be afraid to go to the polls and exercise their right to vote, either now during early vote for those states that are still in the early vote period, or on Tuesday for the election. And a person. I want to ask you the same question in many different way. We've seen some very long lines in places across the country. It's been during early voting, but what we know about the impact of long lines on suppressing the vote. Well, I mean, you know, long lines always mean that some people might get out of line and, you know, not participate in the process. But we also know that people are willing to stand in line of very long time. People have been standing in line for hours. On and this is why early voting has been so important this year. You know, we've extended early voting people have been taking advantage of all of the early voting. Because they're concerned about Election Day and waiting till Election Day again. Iowa this morning, you know, collapsing there. Ah, their precincts closing many of them, you know, with with Cove it No one knows A lot of people are very uncertain about what's going on and you know, really changed People's behavior. The Presidential Commission that President Obama started was all about moving people to early voting and You know, that has been a really success this year. And I think that that success is going to play out on election Day. Mostly positively. And though they're certainly you know, instances, voter intimidation. It is not widespread. And you know, most people are going to experience Ah, you know, have a good election experience.

Powerful derecho flattens corn fields weeks before harvest

"The devastation that ripped through the corn belt about a couple of weeks ago. They call it the ratio winds over 100 Mile an hour, taking out millions of acres of corn and soybeans. Billions and billions of bushels of the grain across Iowa and Illinois as well. Sometimes pictures don't do justice to what you can see in person. That's why on the line, Ryan Boswell joins us. He's a general adjuster. Commercial property claims an agribusiness division with nationwide and Ryan. You're right there on the ground, taking a look at all the damage. Can you describe what you're seeing? And and just how widespread it is? Yes, Hi. It's expensive and devastating. There's structure and corrupt and tree damage. It really looks like a like a freight train route through and just wiped everything out. You know, it covers a swat probably across 100 miles north to south, and I think it traveled damage over 200 biology's the West with the worst part in central Iowa. What's a large grain bins and large strange structures scrunched in like soda can building destroyed during equipment down and it's a bit overwhelming gravity to some of those towns. As you assess the damage of the corn fields. Will any of it be salvageable? And what does harvest look like A This point son of the corn will be Selvi someone some of that's just laid over, some of the farmers will be able to pick it up with their with their corners. But that boy is going to take a lot longer than normal to go one way in the field. No, some of that corn that's completely flat on the ground. Unfortunately, that's not going to be salvageable. So and I think the years they're going to be down here in central Iowa. As a result of that there is still some good crops in the area that'll be able to be harvested. But if we're going to take a toll and look a little different for harvest, so you mentioned a lot of those storage facilities were crushed like 10 cans. How much of a concern his storage going, Toby. A Renewed Focus on Women Over 40

"I am all about this like renewed focus on women over forty. Okay this is a nice list. Is it nice. Oh Yes oh my what I think is nice is that we're finally putting the final Gaz on women over forty and I say that as somebody obviously not over over from not over forty but like I see you know. I'm knocking at his door. And I really has for the past few years having been a million in meetings focus groups Press events where it's all about this we've completely thrown our brand in the trash to appeal to the millennial customer her. That did not your street. Yes everything is about millennial customer I think technically I am a millennium. Older millennial That's that's for sure but it's like guys I understand you have to be relevant. I understand you cannot ignore this. Tremendous Group of people. millennials are going to the biggest group like second to boomers something. Consumers are dying off Lovey boomers but it feels almost like slavish devotion to people who don't necessarily early give them back. You know a return on their investment. So where are you seeing. This renewed focus on women's forty in the beauty. Remember we went to that Lori. Alvin a few a few weeks ago. We sat this law relevant and they talked about how women over forty are basically underserved all your they say that we learned that seventy percent of women over fifty feel forgotten by the beauty and the ad sixty percent of them use makeup every day. Hey and I can attest to that. Having known knowing a lot of women over fifteen. Yeah like my mom wasn't getting out of the car without lipstick. No so so. The Nice thing is focusing on these and and it's like hello. Thank you coming out with a whole line devoted to this. We're all GONNA get older. I've been very reflective the past year. We're all getting older and the idea Zia of like you're no longer relevant. You're no longer visible I think you know we talk so much about inclusivity in this country right now but ageism is like like something that we're not comfortable talking about this year you started to see a twist inclusive Izzo Solorio is coming out with. I don't you can I other products. Okay they're coming out with products that are targeted for lipstick. That isn't you know it's called a perfect. Yeah perfect Foundation that covers without looking like a mask. I'm sorry we don't WanNa look like get the coverage but like highly Jenner. Instead of anti-aging he bought a brand. That's it's not necessarily skin care. I think it's supplements and I think vaginal dryness stuff. But that's taking it to another level but my point is it's normalizing the conversation conversation about aging. It's not ignoring women who honestly like some of my biggest hate. This Term Lake Ella. Crashes are women who are over forty over fifty and it just seems so crazy that we can talk about. You know inclusivity and we're still kind of like oh he's old Going Naughty starting out nice. We were positive it was nice. It's a nice. It's a nice reaction to I think and not a culture that you're looking audie in two thousand nine hundred you're starting to like together beauty industry exactly so we. Yeah we need to. Remaining College Football Bowl Games with the Most Entertainment Value

"We're gonna talk about the college bowl games because there were some this weekend. Yeah. You and the other five people that watched the ball games. I'd like to talk about what you saw. So what was your best and worst from the bowl games? We can and who won the Louisiana New Orleans. Jumble. Aia bowl. Wait. What Louisiana's you said? A lot of words Louisiana New Orleans jambalaya bowl. Well in the cure bowl. I think is what you're trying to inform. Tulane beat Louisiana forty-one twenty four, but they were a lot of turnovers caused by Louisiana fumbles. And they thought they were gonna come back. It was actually pretty close game. But to kind of spread kind of got away from them and they play excellent on the offense deciding came back from those turnovers. So they took that game. That was my only in my bowl picks. That was my only loss. I got each other, right? Like, I said I picked Utah state to beaten North Texas. A just man had on them fifty to thirteen at half. It was thirty eight to seven like this game was over by that point. And I pick Fresno state to go over Arizona state in Francis did win they were the ranked team going to that thirty one twenty. They played really well themselves state did not have their best wide receiver who declared for the draft. So we wasn't not playing this game. His his agent actually paid for him to fly to the bowl game. So he wants them play which was kinda cool Georgia Southern parallelly beat eastern Michigan twenty three twenty one. They play. It was twenty one to twenty. And then it was a going into like two minutes of the game. It was a two minute drill. Basically. They drove down the field. All right down the middle. Just getting twenty twenty art play. And they go to win the game. So that was fun to watch. I picked to win that too. And then Appalachian state against. Middle Tennessee State. But it was apple has been ranked in the AP poll knows them as the team that beat Michigan. But they were ranked this you're actually at twenty five and I picked him to win and they won against forty five thirteen. So I am five in one at the moment. Oh, well, that's so good doing great. But don't. So what's next on tap the next? Are we going to watch the tomorrow, we have a Alabama Birmingham against northern Illinois in the that? I think I'm gonna say here Bundy, Boca Raton bowl. Yes. It is the book Raton bowl. My god. These names I love him. I love these bowl games. Who'd you pick for that one? Let me check like oh picks. Actually, I will check. I have a live idea. Really? No, no, no. I I always saved. My so Frisco bowl. I oh. Well, since Birmingham, Alabama ram wasn't a school wasn't a football program. One point and then won their conference this year. I picked on to go over northern Illinois to to win the Booker Raton. Yes. And then I think Wednesday also there is a big state versus Ohio in the Frisco bowl, which I pick Senegal state to win. But Thursday's the real bowl game that everybody's excited about the band Marshall and self mowers gasp. Up south Florida versus Marshall hell is a Gasparilla bowl. Sounds like something from the eighteen hundreds. But I picked south Florida to win that one I had to pick an underdog in. Anyways fridays. Also, Toledo versus Florida international. We'll talk and. Gotta talk about Chris Boswell on this thirteen misfield goals. Searcy lucky to not be fired today. I think he's lucky that so many other kickers are so bad that he's still like stands above the rest though, like in terms of being bed. I Mason Crosby look like Robbie gold. You know, the thing with that. Is there are so many acres who have been playing absolutely terrible that he's just lucky if they were there weren't so many other terrible terrible kickers. He would not be in

Raiders craft a day to remember in a season to forget

"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Raiders crafted data remember in a season to forget by an Killian, call it. The revenge of the Coliseum every raiders game in Oakland. Feels like a week these days one final farewell to the memories in the moments that have filled Oakland Raiders history with most of the recent ones being largely forgettable for much of Sunday. It looked like game thirteen of the woeful twenty eighteen season was going to be just another whole home losing affair until the Coliseum rose up and said it shall not be. So that this was raiders versus Steelers, dammit for probably the very last time in Oakland, and it was going to be memorable. So after the raiders took the lead with twenty one seconds to play on a touchdown pass from Derek Carr, Derek carrier. And after the Steelers got into position to tie the game. Thanks to a forty three yard, hook and lateral. The old building. And it seeping innards went to work. Sunday's game took place in a chilling December ground fog that cast the Coliseum in gloom slicked the cracked concrete and suck moisture to the surface of the field. It was slippery out there Oakland running back. Jalen, Richard said, I was slipping it's always slippery. Here said tight end Jared cook, Pittsburgh kicker Chris Boswell trotted onto the field for the game tying field goal. Try planted his left leg and as he swung back. His right to kick his plant leg gave out from under him leaving dark Divet in the grass and the raiders filled with joy the raiders had won. They beat their historic rival, Pittsburgh twenty four twenty one for just their second win at home this year and third overall in the midst of the uproarious celebration on the field head coach Jon Gruden ran down to the black hole to high five the fans, it was the type of image that all the citizens of raider nation had in there. Minds when they got the news in January the Gruden was returning to Oakland. But there's been precious little to celebrate. I went to see my old friends all grownup Gruden said we're to in ten actually three in ten after the win. I wanted to thank them. It was an awesome seen today. I appreciate their support. They've been with us. No matter what it wasn't awesome seen black and silver mixed with black and gold. There might never have been so many opposing fans in the Coliseum for raiders game. Every play resulted in a roar from about half the crowd. I was surprised raiders receiver. Seth Roberts said I didn't know they traveled like that. Oh, they do the forty Niners can vouch for that. The Pittsburgh fans whose EM was dampened when quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went out with a rib injury and the offense stalled he came back in the game to orchestrate one. Go ahead. Touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter. And then got the team into field goal position with. That remarkable lateral play. But then the Coliseum rose up and did its work and rothlisburger exited without having one in Oakland leaving with an Owen four record. So Big Ben what were the field conditions like out there? Terrible. He said, but we knew that coming in. I shouldn't say terrible. I'm sorry. That's the wrong word the conditions weren't ideal. But our offensive coordinator Randy Fitch ner had addressed it all week and preached it every day to the offense. He said to make sure you have the right shoes. You saw how many times guys slipped out there? I think they might have slipped even more than we did Boswell said he's been using the same cleats since he'd been in Pittsburgh with seems a little crazy given the different conditions. Every NFL field offers, you can't blame anything Boswell said. It's his bad as it is for me as it is for anyone else. The kicker slippage is not going to go down in history with the immaculate reception or other great. Moments in the history of the two teams, but it gave fans a fun outcome in a woeful season. And the woes have continued the raiders are in position for the number three draft choice who will be making the decision. There was a story Sunday morning that general manager Reggie McKenzie would be departing the team after the season all the principles MacKenzie Gruden and owner Mark Davis, no commented on the story, which wasn't exactly groundbreaking. The assumption has been from the moment Gruden arrived and only reinforced as the season has unschooled that McKenzie would be on his way out sooner or later the players who MacKenzie drafted and that Gruden traded also were in the New Sunday receiver Amari Cooper had three touchdowns for Dallas including the game winner in overtime and two hundred seventeen yards on ten catches. The Cowboys are ready to put him in their ring of honor right now and Khalil Mack helped the bears beat the Rams on Sunday night football. A spot the Steelers raiders matchup got flexed out of partially because of max increased starpower. Meanwhile, the raiders sit tied for the worst record in the league with one game left in Oakland this season and ten thousand question marks about their status next season. The building is falling down around them on Sunday night, a janitor discovered to dead mice in the soda machine. In the press box, the one that dozens of people had been using to pour their drinks all day truth what a place, but on Sunday, it gave raiders fans at least one more memorable moment. A win courtesy of the dank damp Coliseum.

Steelers fall to Raiders as Chris Boswell falls on game-tying field-goal attempt

"Go to Oakland and lose yesterday. Unbelievable. Twenty four to twenty one Chris Boswell missed an extra point. But the story of this game for a while was Ben Rothlisberger getting hurts volume. He stayed out until they started to lose. And then he goes back in. Yeah. We'll ribbon DRAM in the fact that he was back on the sidelines. Sounds like he was cleared to come in. Mike Tomlin said later that. It was the game flow that the game at the time did not allow for him to return. You know, what our interpreted the bottom line? He went into the locker room to get X. Rayed checked out comes back. He's okay. Yeah. Not a great game for an Tonio Brown. Five for thirty five. Jersey was unbelievable though. Eight thirty three touchdowns thirty three points for juju. But the real story was how would this backfield shake out yesterday? Jalen Samuels, Stephen really, the answer was an overwhelming. Jalen Samuels is the guy Stephen really found the end zone, but he had five carries for four yards. One. Touchdown. Jalen Samuels, by the way, seven catches on seven targets of sixteen point two. If James Connor MRs next week and Adam Schefter reported it's possible play. But we'll find out later on. Then you have to figure. Jalen Sanyo's is an Rb to again this weekend's the

The Dolphins' Hook and Lateral: Is it the future of football?

"Dolphins. Six ninety nine touchdown was the longest touchdown with no time left to win a game in the Super Bowl era. That's good. Okay. Is the hook and lateral. The future of football Robert Mays show twice today. Man, more teams should do it. It won one game and had the opportunity to win another. But the Steelers when forget your Chris Boswell compensate went full Steelers. Yeah. I kind of think that one of the things I've talked about when when people have asked you what the next step in football is I actually think it's kind of it's not hooking laterals. It's sort of multiple people having the ball in the backfield. And then one of them throwing almost sort of like what the saints are doing a little bit with three quarterbacks. I if you have a crappy quarterback, it's better to have three of them and just have a little Mr. action there. Princeton does that with on those option plays, and they'll actually hand it to the guy that's the option runner, and he's also a quarterback's throw it, right? But apparently when I tweeted about the hook 'em out bit. Some people say the guy coach calorie the guy who doesn't punt who's famous for not punting. His thing is hook him are actually the next step in football. And actually, I had a role a thing as far as you're going to say, it's the same thing. Yeah. I've never I've never used that phrase hook and lateral before the Wikipedia says hook and lateral sometimes referred to as hook and ladder. But it's called hook and lateral. The Wikipedia I've never said hook and lateral in my life. It's a regional thing. It's like pop verse coke there you go. I just said, you you say, and you firmly believe that was the that was the term. I was like, okay. Well. I wasn't going to come in on shore. Good for you, buddy. I do any research. I appreciate that. I've always had hooking ladder. Maybe that's just the varsity blues influencing the way, I talk about football. Well, it's all. It was it was nuts. I mean, the play was insane. It was absolutely crazy. I even watch in real time. It was too hard to process. I mean, you have gronkowski back there. I guess to prevent a hill. Mary. And then the last thing you want with the guy who can't move that. Well, being your last line of defense happens. Right. So rob gronkowski is not the guy who went back there. That's so he's not Earl Thomas, I think we learned that today or. Or like Julio's defended those plays pretty pretty well in the past. Knocking those Johnson Calvin John yet. Yeah. Calvin Johnson has been a great great last play guy. But they knew they knew it was going to be a hook out excuse me, hook him out. All they said that the I mean you had to it would've been a seventy seventy yards in the air is capable for half the quarterback. Just not Ryan tannehill. Heff the quarterbacks might be strong. But yeah, I mean, I bet I bet a lot of them could throw seventy yards in the air.
